The Phoenix Rises in Dale Urnos Artospective I - an artist’s love stories of personal talent and achievement. But add to that a story of survival and overcoming struggles, I am overwhelmed. Such is the story of Dale James Urnos, chef, and most importantly, a fruit and vegetable carver, in Edmonton.

Married to wife Geraldine and blessed with 3 children, Dale has been a chef for 12 years. His early working years though did not foretell a career in the culinary industry. His career pathway was directed by the money trail. Dale was studying electrical engineering but had to quit due to financial reasons.

As a then working student, he was the caregiver and financial provider for his father’s dialysis treatment until his death. He worked in construction, at fast food outlets for McDonald’s and Domino’s and as a jeepney driver. Later he ventured to look for employment in Dubai, and worked in a restaurant, which started his journey as chef. Rising through the kitchen hierarchy, this later lead to contracts as a chef to the Bermuda Islands in 2007 and finally, in an effort to bring his family together, to Canada in 2010.

had always the challenge of overcoming the obstacle of a lack of formal education and certification for his jobs. He compensated through hands-on training, personal research and development, perseverance and the humility to work in lesser than ideal situations in order to be able to prove himself and eventually work himself up the ranks.

Good things happen to good people. Despite all his hardships, there are pockets of good fortune and memorable moments in his life which cement the belief that a higher hand is at play with his life.

These circumstances would include: being in the right place at the right time for higher employment; training the children of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones the art of pizza-making; a co-worker

surprising him by paying for his airfare to the Philippines; and an employer delaying downsizing business until he and his family received their permanent residency.

In the same pattern as most of the pivotal moments in his life happened by chance, his venture in fruit and vegetable carving was born out of a sense of isolation. Arriving in Canada in the height of winter, unprepared for the cold, and alone, Dale hunkered down and whiled away his time carving fruits and vegetables. Recalling how a previous Thai co-worker would do his centrepieces and watching Youtube tutorial videos, his single carrot roses garnered so much attention from co-workers, customers and friends, that these became regular table centre pieces and gradually grew in magnitude and complexity. Due to word of mouth and Facebook posts, he receives requests for personalized centrepieces and giveaways for special occasions, i.e. a wedding cake made of fruit for a bride unable to eat cake. All of these he does gratis and views as his way of paying forward. He donates his works to fundraisers and silent auctions. Check out his Facebook page to see just how amazing his creations are. He constantly pushes himself by working on different designs and experimenting with different mediums. When he is produce shopping, he not only thinks of flavors and recipes but shapes and textures, and potential art creation. His favorite symbol is the eagle which is obviously a symbol for his soaring dreams.

Dale now works as Head Chef at the Pineridge Golf Resort.

He is part of the Canadian Culinary Federation of Chefs and Cooks (CCFCC), and is one of the board members of the Philippine Culinary Federation of Canada (PCFC). The PCFC is

an association of Filipino chefs geared towards establishing camaraderie amongst Filipino chefs, assisting in fundraisers and providing hands-on training, mentoring, workshops and uniforms for aspiring chefs, and providing scholarships in the Philippines. This advocacy stems from the intention of making the path easier for aspiring chefs and sharing the lessons from his hardships try and try until you succeed; practice until you master it; the true test of the chef is the love and passion for cooking; there is always room for improvement and never be afraid to take new challenges; always take a step forward but keep your feet on the ground; learn to accept advice and ideas from fellow chefs and even critics because you cannot please everybody; and most of all, work hard in silence and let your success be your noise.

Dale’s life story, many aspects of which I have not even touched on, is as melodramatic as a soap opera. Life can indeed be stranger than fiction, as they say. However, it reflects a person who has a strong sense of responsibility and loyalty, perseverance, humility, and generosity. He is the kind of person who readily switched his own salary with another Filipino entry level co-worker to help him settle in Edmonton.

It seems too good to be true.

But skepticism aside, the world is a lot better with people like him. More importantly, this is a story of redemption, where “our passions are the true phoenixes; when the old one is burnt out, a new one rises from the ashes” (Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe).

FROM A TEENAGE EYES KRISTIAN CERENO Kristian Cereno is a Grade 8 Student of St. Mark’s Catholic School in Edmonton. His hobbies include writing poem, composing songs, playing volleyball and in the long run, hoping to learn hockey the Canadian way….

A Superhero Superman, Batman, Wolverine, The Flash, Captain America and The Hulk; they are a few of the fictional superheroes we usually see from the movies – but I only have one real life superhero, he is my father and your fathers too. We call them “The Pillar of the Homes.” His love is harder than any other rocks. He will

do everything just to guarantee our safety. He may not have the power to hover around the clouds, but his sacrifice is more way up above than the skies. He may not have the power of an idiosyncratic speed, but he will run into your presence as fast as he can, especially when you are in sorrow and need a lullaby. He may not have a shield that is indestructible, but he will always protect you forevermore.

Our Dads are better than the fictional superheroes even though they do not have superpowers, yet, they are our 911 all times.

A father has relinquished a lot of things for his family’s welfare. He will give everything up, even to the extent of offering his own life, just to ensure that all his kids and the entire family are safe. He gambles for love and always fights for our sake. He is selfless at all times – he does not mind himself. He will not mind the odds, as long as they are seeing us being delighted of what we are joyfully doing. In short, no matter what happens, our father will always sacrifice until their last breath, because that is how much a father loves his family.

Papa, Father, Dad, Daddy and other names; these are some examples on how we call our fathers.

They are sometimes the “jokers” of the family. He helps us accomplishing our school assignments; teaches us how to cook food. Lastly, he gives us the best pieces of advice on how to get a girlfriend. We call our fathers the “breadwinners of the family” because they work hard and sacrifice for us.

That is why, we should value our time with them before it is too late.

Philippines Appoints a New Senior Trade Commissioner in Canada

T

he Philippine Department of Trade and Industry is pleased to announce the assignment of Ms. Maria Roseni M. Alvero as Senior Trade Commissioner to Canada.

Ms. Alvero brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and integrity to this position. She has more than thirty years in the service of the Philippine Government, serving in various capacities in the Department of Trade and Industry in the fields of economic research, industry and trade policy, export marketing and investment promotion, and bilateral and multilateral government to government relations.

In pursuance to the commitment of the Philippines to deepen its economic relations with Canada, Senior Trade Commissioner Alvero is spearheading the reopening of the Philippine Trade and Investment Centre (PTIC) – Toronto.

The Office, in close collaboration with the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa and all other Consulates or Foreign Service Posts in Canada, will promote and implement the initiatives of the DTI, specifically on trade and investment promotions as well as actively participate in trade policy and gathering of market and commercial intelligence.

As part of the DTI’s Trade and

Investment Promotion Group (IPG), the PTIC- Toronto will work closely with Canadian trade associations, special interest councils, business organizations and relevant agencies to connect Philippine companies with their counterparts in Canada.

The Office shall also provide assistance to FilipinoCanadian businesspersons and entrepreneurs interested in investing in the Philippines.

Ms. Alvero was previously assigned in Toronto, Ontario Canada in 1992-1996. Her other previous international assignments includes two postings in Washington DC, U.S.A. (2000-2002 and 20112015); in Shanghai, China ( 20092011); in San Francisco /Silicon Valley, U.S.A (2004 -2008); in Los Angeles, U.S.A, (1996- 1999) and in Paris, France (1987 – 1991).

Changes to Canada's Caregiver Program-Work Permit Extension

I

received several inquiries regarding changes to Canada's Caregiver Program particularly for work permit extension applications.

Although, changes to the Caregiver Program were issued on November 30, 2014, there are still confusion particularly in the requirements when applying for work permit extension.

LMIA applications received on or before November 30, 2014 Work permit applications that are supported by a positive LMIA, where the LMIA application was received at the ESDC on or before November 30, 2014 will be processed

by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) under the requirements of the Live In Caregiver Program (LCP), allowing for eventual application for permanent residence under section R113 of the Immigration, Refugee and Protection Regulation (IRPR).

LMIA applications received after November 30, 2014 Employers applying for LMIA for caregiving occupations will be processed under the streams for low and high wage positions. As such, Employers must meet the requirements set by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and IRCC, including meeting the prevailing wage for the position to the provincial or territorial median hourly wage. Regular stream specific program requirements apply namely airfare, health coverage, workplace safety insurance, employment contract, etc.

CAREGIVERS NOT PART OF THE LCP (regular temporary foreign worker stream)

Foreign workers who obtained job offers and LMIA's for in-home care-giving occupations (live in and liveout) but are not part of the LCP, will be processed by IRCC and assessed under the general foreign worker stream, since the specific requirements for live-in caregivers under section R112 have been waived under public policy.

APPLICATION FOR WORK PERMIT EXTENSION INSIDE CANADA Certain applications are not affected by the changes: - Applications for extension to LCP work permits made inside Canada by those who have already been accepted into the LCP, who have met the eligibility requirements for permanent residence and complied the requirement to live in the home of the employer; -Applications for open work permits from those whose applications for permanent residence under the LCP class have been submitted.

As of November 30, 2014 caregivers in the LCP now have the option to live in or live out, subject to the contracts with their employer.

Caregivers who live out are not considered part of the LCP, regardless of whether their previous work permit was issued in the LCP, and therefore not considered part of the LCP, and are not ELIGIBLE to apply for permanent residence under the LCP. However, caregivers who entered Canada under the LCP class, and subsequently choose to live out, and then re-enter back to the LCP class by living in again, may qualify for permanent residence provided they submit the application within their qualifying period for permanent residence application process.

It is critical for Caregivers to be aware that moving from live-in to live-out and vice versa will require a new LMIA and a new work permit to reflect the conditions of employment or changes in the employment contract.

Crosstown Auto beats Lakays, 80-77 in 9th ERBC basketball finals

Crosstown Auto Centre beat The Lakays, 80-77 in the master's division finals of the 9th "The Gathering at ERBC" Friendly Basketball League, May 28, at the ERBC gym in Edmonton.

Mark Dorado, the final's most valuable player, topscored for the Joe Medina-managed Crosstown Auto with 25 points while Richard Eje led the losing Lakays with 14 baskets.

"Lamang kami sa umpisa and our players delivered and kept our rivals at bay," said Crosstown Auto coach Chester Tiongson.

In the open division, PSA defeated Eswar of Alwyn and Dawn, 93-90 with MVP RJ Librea drilling in 15 of his 20 points in the final half to lead the victory with Josh Santua who canned in 25 points.

Bryant San Felipe and Paul Marqueses tried to rally Eswar but could only produce 18 and 14 points, respectively.

Members of the organizing committe, Pastor Johnston Pablo, tournament commissioner Elijah "Jem" Principio, Abel Licup, Lowell Ferrer, Dexter Torres, Mike Rolle, Juffrey Sampaga, Seng Santiago, Alex Buluran and Lito Banzil thanked the 16 teams that participated this season.

"We started with just six teams with the purpose of sharing the word of God, which is the identity of the league,"

he Congress of the Philippine Associations of Alberta's gala evening attracted a full capacity gathering of Filipinos and Canadians honoring and remembering Filipino heroes who fought and sacrificed their lives to gain independence against the Spanish emancipators . The

proclamation of the Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898 at Kawit, Cavite heralded a significant date that is encrypted in the history and hearts of the Filipinos. On June 3, 2017 at Four Points Hotel by Sheraton a full capacity crowd of over 250 Filipinos and Canadians gathered

to commemorate this important date. The celebration was also held in conjunction with the 150 years of Confederation of Canada.

delivered the tribute to Tessie P. Oliva who passed away April 12, 2017 and Lulu Bernal. Secretary of COPAA delivered a tribute in honor of Wilfredo Ladores who died December 19, 2016. Both served for over forty years for the good of the Filipino community. Considered as pioneers and pillars of the community these multiawarded individuals paved way to what we are enjoying today.

The guests who attended the Gala were welcomed by the Saranay Rondalla playing Filipino music. The program went well with audience being treated to a cultural presentation by the internationally awarded Karilagan Dance Society and the Saranay Folk Dancers. Rod Simon of Bacolod City, Joanne Aguilar, Julius Galve and Gemmalyn Daculan entertained the crowd with inspiring patriotic and upbeat songs. The evening was emceed by Bethany Briones , a recipient of the prestigious Edwin Parr Teacher Award.

Moses Billacura was a sports correspondent for national newspapers in the Philippines since 1992 and served as sports editor and columnist for a community paper before moving to Canada in 2010. He is an Edmonton Oilers fan.

awrence Macaraeg topped the First PWAS Inter-Club Tournament, May 27, at the Yellowhead Inn. Matthew Caindec placed second while Neil Justin Papa took the third spot.

The tournament was organized by masters Herald Casana and Oliver Salvador.

The "Kali" is a traditonal Filipino Martial Arts that is now being propagated by both masters in Alberta Province. *** Congratulations to the Crosstown Auto Centre for winning the first Corpus Christi Parish Charity Golf Tournament, June 19, at the Mill Woods Club.

Crosstown Auto shot a sixunder par 72 and beat by two strokes the team of tournament co-chairman Manuel Ibasco and team Joel Gonzales.

Crosstown's win was aided with an eagle at the 8th along with four birdies, three of which coming from the backnine on 11th, 12th and 15th after their first birdie at the 4th.

“We are friends and it’s really great to play the sport we love in the company of friends,” said Holganza.

Holganza was proud of what their MVP did in the final game.

“He just delivered when we need him the most”.

Samson drilled in six three-point shots to keep the Knights at bay. Their biggest lead was at 20 points and was down to just five, then Samson delivered the goods with the help, of course of his teammates like Guillen, Eyao and Branzuela who scored the needed points too in the dying minutes.

He got caught! How does he know who caught him while he was staring at the imperceivable?

I

n this world, there are so many things that can be known. Knowing, specifically and especially for the genius, is limitless. Of course, in different categories. For the ordinary minds, the leading questions are: “Can everything knowable tangible? Is knowledge and knowing one and the same?

Can everybody step into someone’s life? Can anybody be engaged to somebody and live a life happily ever after? Can a child have the option to choose his parents and vice versa? Is homosexuality a preference?

Can a poor and a destitute enjoy the Right to acquire a good education—Is Education per se a Right or a Privilege? Is it really true that poverty and indolence a CHOICE? Can one set up a business without consumers?

Can there be plebeian and serfs without the bourgeois landlords and capitalists? Can war be stopped by never-ending killing?

Can we control criticism or what other people think about us?

Can everyone have good answers to these questions? If you do, feel free to explain them to yourself for your personal

gratification. Or maybe, you may have the tendency to be creating more questions rather than opting to contribute some feasible solutions. Anyway, there’s nothing that cannot be contested and questioned. Try to pick up one or more from the given words below and try to reflect upon their Similarities and Differences: 1. Seeking and Seeing 2. Seeming and Being 3. Feeling and Knowing 4. Freedom and Serfdom 5. Independence and Interdependence 6. Rights and Privileges 7. Electing and Selecting 8. International and Transnational 9. Educating and Indoctrinating 10. Ideals and Ideologies 11. Confidence and Competence 12. Fluent and Eloquent 13. Proving and Probing 14. Idealism and Pragmatism 15. Governing and Coordinating After having known about their simple similarities and distinctions, then, you can probably or confidently proceed with equipping yourself with the necessary knowledge in order to accept the what contradicts to your conviction.

For instance, the Theory of Functionalism adheres upon Evolution. It firmly believes that the problems can be solved by accepting the problems. On the contrary, the Conflict Theory, instead promotes Revolution in order the check and balance the reigning power of the blue blooded class.

Look at that photo. Do you think, that guy was thinking and knowledgeable? Do you have the idea where he was and who took picture on him? Of course, your immediate response is: “I don’t know!” The worst is: “I don’t care…Who is he, by the way!”

As your editor, I like the way you reacted on this quite perplexing editorial.

Why? At least, you learned and recognized a lesson from this exposition, by refusing to own problems that are not basically yours.

Leaving the Philippines behind is one of the vivid proofs of our sound judgement.

Migrating to other countries from the Philippines is not an escape or the expression of non-patriotism but a simple dichotomy from the roots of the problem. Such gesture may always be interpreted as

cowardice or betrayal. Well, that should not be the case. I would rather call it as the recognition that the problem truly exists.

And, if we don’t get out where the problem is, then, we will possibly become the parts of the problems rather than of the solutions. It is a sound realization too that, solving our Country’s problems is beyond our capacity. Yes, we know what’s going on, but we don’t really understand why there’s such societal turmoil. Thereby, we just ended up knowing without understanding. We will surely die before our natural death occurs.

Now, what’s the point?

From that point on, his connection to fashion and the arts began. Edge continued to pursue modelling even as he entered university. While studying in the University of the East, he was named Mr. University of the East whilst competing in national-level modelling competitions. His vast repertoire included modelling in Philippine fashion runways, being the face of one of San MigLite’s campaigns, Judge chewing gums and Rebisco Biscuits.

to take a career change and travel abroad. In Saudi Arabia, as an interior designer, Edge met a fellow foreign worker who had similar interests in the art of style and who had a talent for fashion.

This man, unbeknownst to him at that time, would take his experience as a foreign worker and become one of Philippines’ biggest fashion designers, clothing Ms. Universe 2016, who is none other than Cherry Veric.

However, his life took yet another turn in 2004, as he decided to follow his family who relocated to Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada. And in Edmonton, Edge made a name for himself working as an interior designer. Still, having the passion for fashion, Edge has been involved in the fashion community in Edmonton. He has starred as a TV Guest as a fashion guru in CTV and Global Edmonton. Additionally, he has modelled for clothing brands, including a print ad for Simons.

One of his largest roles for the past 3 years has been to assist in organizing one of the largest fashion events in Western Canada, the Western Canada Fashion Week.

Working in this industry, Edge realized that while other cultures were showcasing their creations, the Filipinos were underrepresented.

To remedy this situation, he called on a friend who had since gained fame and reknown for dressing the likes of Miss International, Kylie Verzosa, Miss Univserse, Pia Wurtzback and Miss Universe contestant Maxine Medina. Edge invited Cherry Veric to attend the Western Canada Fashion Week that happened in early April of this year. Through Edge’s dedication, working to collaborate with WCFW organizers and Cherry Veric, the Fashion Week was a success, with Cherry Veric’s set, the last but definitely not the least, having been attended by a full crowd and with standing ovation.

Today, Edge focuses on being an interior designer, a marketing director for Show Homes and in studying real estate. His dream is to start a real estate company where he can

stage and sell homes. Modelling for him has now become a pasttime hobby, even though he still gets calls for fashion shoots, the most recent being in the “Pinoy Weave: Philippine Designers”

fashion show in New York happening in July.

What does he attribute his success? For him, it is to be patient, to never stop dreaming nor believing in yourself, and,

most importantly, to not be afraid to commit mistakes. Ultimately for Edge, it was his passion that brought him to his dreams. And, he is still dreaming.

Faith Shared Is Fate Paired In 1636, Lorenzo was accused of murder. Allegedly he killed a Spaniard. However, to protect his safety at the time, he fled home and found refuge on board a ship with three Dominican priests and a leper.

The First Filipino Saint

Now Lorenzo was arrested by Japanese officials for the crime of being a Christian and ordered to recant his faith. When he refused he was imprisoned for two years. On September 27, 1637, Lorenzo and his companions were taken to Nagasaki to be tortured and killed if they would not recant their faith.

Katrina Cereno is a junior high student. She spent her efforts in writing and interested to drawings and photography. She's looking forward to be a future architect. She lives in Edmonton, Alberta with her family.

Lorenzo and his companions were tortured by water, which was forced into their mouths and down their throats and out their noses and ears. Despite the painful torture, the men refused to do so.

Following this, Lorenzo was hanged upside down, with a rope around his ankles. This method of torture was known as tsurushi, or "gallows and pit." The torture forces a person to be hanged upside down with a gash cut in their forehead to prevent too much blood from gathering in the head. The gash also causes the victim to bleed to death over an extended period of time.

Those who have survived the torture have said it is unbearable.

One hand is left free so the victim can offer an agreed symbol that will represent their desire to recant their faith. Those few who recant are spared and allowed to live. But few people ever recanted, choosing instead to die for their faith.

Lorenzo refused to recant. According to the record of his death, his last words were, "I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for God. Had I a thousand lives, all these to Him I shall offer. Do with me as you please."

His traveling companions were all killed, steadfast until the end.

Lorenzo was beatified by Pope John Paul II on February 18, 1981. The beatification ceremony was held in the Philippines making it the first beatification ceremony ever held outside the Vatican.

A miracle attributed to his intercession occurred in 1983. A twoyear-old girl, Alegria Policarpio, suffering from hydrocephaly, a condition she had since birth, was miraculously cured.

His canonization took place at the Vatican on October 18, 1987.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz is the patron saint of Filipino youth, the Philippines, people working overseas, and altar servers.

There are no details of this alleged crime other than a journal entry by two Dominican priests, that he joined their group to escape possible arrest.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz was born around the year 1600 in Binondo, Manila in the Philippines.

He was the son of a Chinese father and a Filipino mother. Both were Christians and took care to raise Lorenzo as a Catholic. He served happily in his parish church as an altar boy and calligrapher.

As a young man, Lorenzo joined the Dominican Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary.

Later, he married a woman named Rosario.

The happy couple had three children, two sons and one daughter. By all accounts, the family was ordinary and happy.

The ship departed the Philippines on June 10, 1636, bound for Okinawa.

A shock awaited the holy passengers when they arrived in Japan. At the time of their arrival, the rulers of Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate, were persecuting Christians. Prior to this persecution, the Christian population of Japan was thought to number 50,000 souls.

Tessie Oliva, A Tribute

he Filipino Community in Edmonton mourned the loss of a pioneer and a dedicated leader . She arrived in Edmonton armed with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila.

For almost half a century, she started her volunteer work right after she set foot in Edmonton. She was voted to become one of the Presidents of the Philippine Bayanihan Association of Alberta (PBAA), the first and oldest Filipino organization in Edmonton. Josie Pallard, a Pioneer and contemporary of Tessie in servicing the community , mentioned on her tribute the following: "My tribute on her leadership is based on Brian Downnard's words of wisdom: " Being a leader is one of the most difficult and rewarding position in the world." " Tessie was highly motivated with a desire to achieve beyond expectations. This comes from her passion, pride and desire to lead, and her motivation to do things better than anyone else. She was Confident, which came hand in hand with Trust. She was accountable and courageous leader. Tessie has proven her courage with her long battle with cancer. Tessie had a unique persona that made her one of a kind , a loving, caring person, full of compassion and not afraid to stand alone and be different. She had a strong and ethical and moral values, a very important quality of a leader."

Josette Salgado, a nurse and a close friend of Tessie, in her tribute mentioned her as a born leader, outspoken and confident., fearless to a cause, a fighter and perfectionist.

She founded the Filipino Nurses Association in Alberta (FNAA) in 1976. In celebration of the achievements of registered nurses over the past 100 years, the College and Association of Registered Nurses in Alberta (CARNA)

launched the Centennial Award in search of 100 exceptional Alberta Registered Nurses . Tessie was included in those 100 recipients.

summed up her achievements: In her vision to support newly arrived nurses, she founded the FNAA. In 1988 She was involved in forming the Council of Edmonton Filipinos Associations. She is a recipient of CARNA Centennial Award, 2009 Stars Award in recognition of extraordinary efforts and contributions to the well being of the community. In 2006 through her leadership and initiative , the FNAA made partnership with Capital Health in Alberta towards a successful recruitment and integration of Filipino nurses to the workforce and community.

In May 2003 she founded of the Multicultural Coalition. a group of emerging ethno-cultural communities. . In June 2008, she took part in revitalization of the Filipino Retirees Association in Alberta (FRAA) and was responsible in getting grant casino licencing through Alberta Gaming Licensing Commission (AGLC). A recipient of Karilagan Hiyas GEM Awards for community Service and Excellence in he Profession.

In June 2016 The Congress of the Philippine Associations of Alberta (COPAA) recognized her over 40 years outstanding service to Edmonton communities and bestowed her the Lifetime Achievement Award. for Community Service.

We could have overlooked other achievements, but Tessie ,you are not forgotten and the Filipino community will be forever grateful to your endless humanitarian contributions.

In quoting from St. Paul Letter to the Corinthians , Tessie P. Oliva, "You have fight a good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith."

Is Philippines truly Independent?

or the Filipino diaspora, June 12, the Philippine Independence day is a big day. It is a day where Filipino communities prepare months before. It is a day commemorated with the raising of the Philippine flags in the provincial or municipal government building in different cities in Canada.

June 12 is also a celebration where big dinner galas happen.

Filipinos-Canadians, immigrants and migrant workers donned their best Barong Tagalog and dresses.

But for most Filipinos abroad, when asked, have a different interpretation of the Philippine Independence Day. There was one older Filipino man who’s response was thought-provoking.

Asked about it, his response with assertiveness was that “Filipinos should be celebrating July 4 as our independence day, not June 12”. His argument was, after the declaration of independence from Spain by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo June 12, 1898, the Treaty of Paris invalidated the proclamation, wherein Spain “sold” the country to the United States for $20 million. Therefore The Philippines became a property of the United States from Dec. 1898 up to July 4, 1946. That would mean that the United States “gave” us the independence. That makes some sense, right? However it still begs the question: Is Philippines really independent?

To contextualize it, we need to understand the history of the Philippine revolution of 1896-1898. These years were the height of armed revolution against over 200 years of Spanish colonization. KKK or the Kataa-taasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan or simply the Katipunan led the revolution.

The first documented battle of the revolution took place on August 30, 1896. This is where the leader of the Katipunan, Andres Bonifacio along with his 800 men attacked a Spanish arsenal in San Juan Del Monte, which is now the municipality of San Juan in Metro Manila. The revolutionary movement quickly spread in Manila, Southern Tagalog and Central Luzon forcing the Governor General to declare martial law. The revolution was gaining momentum and well on

its way in quickly spreading all over the country when it hit a major bump. There was infighting within the revolution. Particularly in Cavite, rebels were looking into the establishment of a new leadership. Rivalry between the two biggest factions, The Magdiwang and the Magdalo, become intense that the Magdalo faction, who control over a larger number of towns and municipalities, wished to replace the Katipunan with an insurgent government. At the Tejeros Convention, both factions were combined into one government body under Emilio Aguinaldo who has been elected as the president.

Emilio Aguinaldo ordered the assassination of Andres Bonifacio taking on sole leadership of the Katipunan. The Katipunan under Aguinaldo still aims for the independence of the Philippines and urged Filipinos to fight for freedom, he also proclaimed “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity” and to follow the examples of the European and American Nations. This is the shift from Bonifacio’s National Democratic revolution.

The governor General at that time knew that they would not be able to silence the revolution. They offered to have peace negotiations with the rebels. An agreement was signed that provided for an end to the revolution by the laying down of arms of the revolutionary forces of Aguinaldo. They would then be granted amnesty and allowed to return to their homes. On the other hand, Aguinaldo and the other leaders would go on voluntary exile to Hong Kong along with the P800,000 that would be given by the Spanish government to the rebels.

Meanwhile the SpanishAmerican war has began. The Spanish-American war was mostly focused on Cuba, the United States Navy commanded

by Commodore George Dewey, sailed the Philippines and engage to destroy the Spanish fleet thus the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1st. It was said to be a “mock battle” as Spain is already negotiating the Philippines to the United States that was rubber stamped in the Treaty of Paris on December 1898. With the help of the United States Aguinaldo was able to come back and resumed command of revolutionary forces.

On May 24, 1898 in Cavite, Aguinaldo issued a proclamation in which he assumed command of all Philippine forces and established a temporary dictatorial government with himself as dictator. On June 5, 1898, Aguinaldo issued a decree setting aside June 12, 1898 as the day of the proclamation of independence. The event was held in his home in Cavite unfurling the Philippine flag for the first time and the 21page declaration of Philippine independence signed by people appointed by Aguinaldo.

Many details of history happened after and in between.

It is the Treaty of Paris, where Philippines was sold for $20 million,that the legal powers of the nation were transferred from the Spanish colonization to the United States. Since then, Philippines have been struggling to become independent sovereign nation.

The

relationship between these two nations is strategic, economic and cultural domination of the United States and dependence of the Philippines. Philippines gained its formal independence from United States in July 4, 1946.

Many literatures argue that the U.S. continues to wield its influence on all aspects of Philippine economic, cultural, and especially political life.

There are several aspects of neocolonial relationship between the US and the Philippines.

Economically, the US attribute international financial institutions and multi-national corporations in order to exploit the economic resources of ex-colonies like the Philippines. For example it encourages the development of the agricultural exports but discourages the development of the Philippines’ domestic industries. Like the enormous Dole plantation in Mindanao that produces agricultural products principally for the needs of the US market. Another example would be the Bell Trade Act of 1946. It is essentially a “free trade” act where the Philippine Government was not allowed to impose tariff against imported American goods. This destroys

the growth of the domestic industry. And many more.

The Philippine have always been imprisoned in the neocolonial mentality keeping the ties to the US. There is always an influence of the US government in any issues like the South China Sea dispute and the more recent imposition of Martial Law in Mindanao. The Philippines have not been able to catch up with its South East Asian neighbours in achieving fundamental economic growth and a reasonable distribution of wealth. History has shown us that blindly following other nation have not helped the Philippines prosper. As a result more and more Filipinos are leaving for other countries like Canada to be able to have a better life.

It’s ironic that as we celebrate “independence day” in Canada, neo-colonial rule in the Philippines continue to exist. It’s important that as we celebrate this day 119th anniversary of the proclamation of the Philippine independence in our communities, let’s continue to be reminded of the struggle for freedom of our ancestors and continue the unfinished revolution until we can truly be free.

Killing Satan If God is All-Powerful, Why Does He Not Just Kill Satan?

ne of the mysteries of the Christian life is why God didn’t destroy Satan immediately after Satan sinned.

We know that God will one day defeat Satan by throwing him into the Lake of Fire where he will be tortured day and night forever (Revelation 20:10), but sometimes we wonder why God has not destroyed Satan already.

Perhaps we will never know God’s exact reasoning, but we do know certain things about His nature.

First, we know God is absolutely sovereign over all creation, and this includes Satan. Certainly, Satan and his demons wreak havoc in the world, but they are only allowed a certain amount of freedom. We also know that God has planned

everything from the beginning of time to the end. Nothing can thwart God's plans, and things are proceeding exactly on schedule. "The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying: 'Surely, as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.'"

Isaiah 14:24 KJV Second, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28 KJV).

Whatever God has planned for Satan, that plan will be the best one possible.

God’s perfect wrath and justice will be satisfied, and His perfect righteousness will be glorified. Those who love

Him and who wait for His plan to be fulfilled will be thrilled to be part of that plan and will praise and glorify Him as they see it unfold.

Third, we know that to question God’s plan and its timing is to question God Himself, His judgment, His character,and His very nature. It is not wise to question His right to do exactly as He pleases. The psalmist tells us, "As for God, His way is perfect: the Word of the Lord is tried: He is a Buckler to all those that trust in Him" (Psalm 18:30KJV).

CONCLUSION Whatever plan comes from the Mind of the Almighty Father is the best plan possible. It is true that we can't expect to understand that mind perfectly, as He reminds us, "'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,' says the LORD. 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.'"

Isaiah 55:8-9 KJV Nevertheless, our responsibility to God is to obey Him, to trust Him, and to submit to His will, whether we understand it or not. In the case of His timing for Satan’s demise, it has to be the best possible plan because it is God’s plan. Amen.

ANCOP-CANADA: Putting Faith Into Action

ANCOP International (Canada) Inc., is a duly registered Canadian charity dedicated to uplift the lives of poor families in developing countries through shelter, child education and humanitarian relief.

ANCOP, an acronym for “Answering the Cry of the Poor” is a non-profit organization established in 2001 by Couples for Christ, a global lay organization of the faithful recognized by Vatican. We in ANCOP aim to restore the poor’s hope and dignity, organizing them into sustainable and self-reliant communities through livelihood assistance, values formation and community empowerment.

Currently, we operate in the Philippines, India and several countries in Africa including Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania.

We are primarily supported by donations from individuals, groups and corporate partners and sponsors.

Child Sponsorship Program Through our Child Sponsorship Program (CSP) the under privileged children and their families are given hope for the future. Children’s education along with needed school materials, uniform and medical check-up are provided

for through the generosity of our donors. Cost to sponsor a child in elementary and high school is Cdn $38 per month or Cdn $456 per year and Cdn $76 per month for college and vocational or Cdn $912 per year.

Community Development Program We develop communities by building homes and providing sustainable livelihood programs that help families break out from the cycle of poverty. Cost to build a house is Cdn$3,500 and Cdn$35,000 for a village of at least 10 houses.

Humanitarian Relief Program We provide shelter and other basic needs to those who have lost their homes because of natural disasters. On April 16, 2016, ANCOP Canada awarded 400 new concrete and resilient homes to the survivors of the Typhoon Yolanda at the Pope Francis CFC ANCOP Canada Community-SM Cares Village at Brgy. NewKawayan, Tacloban, Leyte.

Individuals and groups participate in the Walk, generously giving donations or helping solicit funds for ANCOP Canada. Kids, youth, adults and seniors join together to walk for the poor and rally the public to support the cause.

In Canada, the ANCOP Walk is conducted simultaneously in various locations around the country. For 2017, eighteen (18) cities and towns across Canada will join in the annual event in August 2017.

We are glad to report that CFC ANCOP Edmonton, Alberta will conduct its ANCOP Walk on August 19, 2017, Saturday, at the Millwoods Park, 66 Street cor. 23 Avenue, from 8 AM to 12 Noon.

The Walk is open to everyone and the participant must be up for the challenge of walking a distance of 4 kilometers or so, and willing to help generate funds by soliciting donations from various donors for ANCOP. Those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

THE FILIPINO FIESTA IN EDMONTON: Linking the Branches to their Roots

side from birthdays, election days, Christmas Seasons, and other civic holidays; Fiesta is one of the most visited occasions in the Philippines. It is the time to commemorate and celebrate either the memorial or birthdate of a particular patron or patroness. This Filipinos’ custom and belief was partly inherited from the Spanish colonizers 400 years ago.

From then on, even the name of our Country, the Philippines, was derived from King Philip the Second of Spain. Fiesta became the Filipino’s Best celebration ever. Until now, they believe that the saint’s divine intervention truly plays the great role in order to be showered by the blessings from Above; it is through fervent prayers that they abundantly harvest from the seeds they’ve planted—from the fruits of their labours. That is why, the Filipinos, in return, are evidently spending much time, effort, money, talents, and other resources to make sure that the Fiesta celebration would become a real gesture of thanksgiving. Not only that, they take this opportunity to give the tribute back to the Creator, by sharing whatever they have.

Almost all the families ensure that there is food on the table so that when the visitors come by; then, there’s something to offer.

Here in Edmonton, Fiesta, as we conspicuously observed, is not merely celebrated as the manifestation of faith and thanksgiving; but the exercise of freedom and simplicity. The organizers took the initiative to bring the spirit of camaraderie and external expression of Arts and Culture so that the main celebration would become the

core of festivities where in the variety of the Filipino-produced talents, customs and traditions can be showcased into one occasion.

This Fiesta celebration last 9th to 11th of June at Winston Churchill Square in Edmonton, Alberta was participated by various sectors, political affiliations, socio-civic-religious organizations, and nationalities. The programs were coloured by Filipino Folk singing and dancing, inspirational messages, parade, Filipino Foods and Pastries, martial arts’ exhibitions, and Filipino-owned businesses. These were all tremendously applauded by the entire society.

History Unfolded: The Traditional Flores De Mayo (May Flower Festival)

he Filipino Retirees in Alberta (FRAA) had meritoriously celebrated the traditional “Santakrusan or Flores De Mayo”held at the Korean Hall in Edmonton last June 4, 2017.

This was highlighted by the procession while the Novena prayers in honour of St. Helena the Empress was being recited. This has long been practised by the Filipinos in remembrance of the Saint’s mythical finding of the Cross.

une 17, 2017. Both 119th Philippine Independence Day and Canada’s 150th Birthdaywere successfully celebrated at Peace Hill Park in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

Every good cause has a good effect – Any dream without action is like a boat on a dry land. This time, we can proudly say that the Philippine Consul General’s aspiration to initially gather the Filipinos in one place has taken into effect. He proposed, we imposed!

Through the concerted effort not only of our fellow Filipinos, but of all concerned Canadians, the Wetaskiwin Filipino Community Foundation, headed by its very energetic president Noli Calina, was able to host this historic event.
