Saint Valentine's day is 14th February.

T

he celebrations of St. Valentine's Day are steeped in legend and mystery; indeed the motives behind the day's creation and even St. Valentine himself have been shrouded in controversy and doubt because there are 3 St. Valentine written in History.

Nevertheless, Saint Valentine's Day embraces a time of year that is historically associated with love and fertility.

Saint Valentine was a bishop who lived in the third century in Rome who fight against Emperor Claudius II who ban marriage between two young lovers.

In those years, Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. This made Claudius furious. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages.

Even with Claudius order not to performed marriage to couples, Valentine continue to marry couples. He kept on performing marriage ceremonies – secretly. Valentine perform the ceremony in a small candle lit room with only the bride and groom and him.

Katrina Cereno is a junior high student. She spent her efforts in writing and interested to drawings and photography.

She's looking forward to be a future architect. She lives in Edmonton, Alberta with her family.

Saint Valentine held the law of the church and helped lovers who came to him, uniting them in a holy matrimony, but it was only a matter of time before the Emperor heard about this and had him arrested. Valentine was imprisoned.

The ban on marriage was a great shock for the Romans. But they dared not voice their protest against the mighty emperor.

The kindly bishop Valentine also realized the injustice of the decree. He saw the trauma of young lovers who gave up all hopes of being united in marriage. He planned to counter the monarch's orders in secrecy. Whenever lovers thought of marrying, they went to Valentine who met them afterwards in a secret place, and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. And thus he secretly performed many marriages for young lovers.

MISS UNIVERSE 2016: The Majestic Entrance of Miss France!

Iris Mittenaere from France is Miss Universe 2016! Iris was born in Lille in the Nord Pas de Calais region in northern France.

Iris is in her fifth year of pursuing a degree in Dental Surgery. Besides dental school, she has always been fond of extreme sports, including skydiving, bungee bumping and hang gliding. She also enjoys cooking French food and traveling.

As Miss Universe, she wants to continue her awareness campaign for dental and oral care, taking her campaign all around the world. She also hopes to advocate for access to education and children's rights.

When asked what quality makes someone confidently beautiful, Iris told us, "Beauty shines from the inside out.

Be kindhearted, believe in moral values, have confidence in myself, but also admit my flaws, that is the way to work on myself and become confidently beautiful." www.missuniverse.com

Valentine tried to stay cheerful even inside the prison cell. Many young people came to the jail to visit him.

They threw flowers and notes up to his window. They wanted Valentine to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard, Asterius. Her father allowed her to visit Valentine in the cell. She agreed that he did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages.

While waiting for his sentence, his jailor Asterius approached him to use his saintly power, and heal his blind daughter.

Valentine succeeded and her sight was restored -- they became close and fell in love.

When Claudius II met Valentine, he was said to have been impressed by the dignity and conviction of the latter. However, Valentine refused to agree with the emperor regarding the ban on marriage. It is also said that the emperor tried to convert Valentine to the Roman gods but was unsuccessful in his efforts. Valentine refused to recognize Roman Gods and even attempted to convert the emperor, knowing the consequences fully. This angered Claudius II who gave the order of execution of Valentine. Meanwhile, a deep friendship had been formed between Valentine and Asterius' daughter. It caused great grief to the young girl to hear of his friend's imminent death. It is said that just before his execution, Valentine asked for a pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to her "From Your Valentine," a phrase that lived ever after. As per another legend, Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his jailer during his imprisonment. The most plausible story surrounding St. Valentine is one not centered on Eros (passionate love) but on agape (Christian love): he was martyred for refusing to renounce his religion. Valentine is believed to have been executed on February 14, 270 AD.

Love That Is Worth Fighting For

F

ighting for love: up until the end; striving hard till eternity; giving not up despite painful experiences and difficulties alike; and standing firmly for the love of others, family, and most especially, my heart’s one and only.

Are those reasons enough to say that someone is love’s defender? That at some point one can sail across the stormy oceans and the seas just to find the beloved thereafter; who can set the search and reach through thick-and-thin and forest’s tremendous rain just to find the love of his life out there. Tantamount to a Hide and Seek game of lovers. That, after counting from one up to ten; he will still find and catch her so she can never go any further.

Should you truly put your life in peril in order to be considered a lover and prove that your love is worth fighting for?

These gestures though simply mean that the one who is truly loving is capable of believing and persevering in his ability to make the beloved feel valued and important. Thus, that kind of love therefore, is worth fighting for, regardless of

flaws and imperfections.

However, there’s a love that is defending your rights and feelings. Is this the kind of love that is worth fighting for?

Is protecting a beloved from all the untoward incidents that may come up her way; securing that not even a single fly can come close unto her; protecting her from the bullets of a gun just to be saved from a certain danger.

Are all these considerations valid in order to be loving beyond compare and worth fighting for?

That, after the long and tedious fight, the lover would not be loved in return.

Love begets love. This simply means that love must be reciprocated at all times. It is not

one-way. All feeling at all kinds of relationships: Successes and even failures must be shared by the partners. Joint ventures must always be observed so that whatever challenge that come along would be addressed squarely. When you’re together, everything can be managed.

Nothing will stop you from loving each other because both of you are defended and protected by your love.

Therefore, your love is strong and cannot easily be broken down by the people around you.

Your genuine feelings are the foundation of Love and Romance. Offering your shoulder to cry on is another bonus point.

pillar of strength and courage that persistently gives you a reason to fight. That is why, everyone must be encouraged to build a strong foundation of a benevolent and courageous love. So, if you think that you are succumb by cowardice, then, I suggest you go back to the times that stood up, moved

forward, and struggled for your love. hy do people judge others without the facts, with gossip, spread lies, and then not talk straight to our face? A word out of our mouths may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything—or destroy it! The tongue can be very destructive through gossiping!

We don’t take gossiping seriously enough...

What exactly is gossip?

Webster defines gossip in two ways, both as a noun and as a verb: * As a noun, a gossip is a person who habitually reveals personal or sensational facts about others. * As a verb, gossip is a rumor or a report of an intimate nature.

My dear friends, it only takes a spark to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of our mouths can do that. By our speech, we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell!

For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame

the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.

But the tongue can be the instrument by which words of love can be spoken to the lonely ... It can be an instrument by which words of comfort can be spoken to the brokenhearted. It can be an instrument by which words of encouragement can be spoken to the discouraged. It’s the instrument by which words of direction can be given to the confused ... Think of the many people who have been saved because of the words someone shared with them.

My dear friends, do you want harmony in your family, with your friends, in your workplace, and in your community? My advice to all of you is this--tame your tongues! Don't let it go out of control. Before you speak make sure your brain is engaged properly and considerately.

ost landed immigrant in Canada who gained Engineering education from their home countries have misconstrued the basic difference between “Evaluation” and “Recognition.” In a nutshell, the latter is a more complex process and unfortunately the main ingredients in the achievement of the Engineering Professional License.

As a skilled immigrant, education is one of the requirements in order to gain points for the new Express Entry program being catered by the Canadian government. For those who have landed in Canada and used the old Federal Skilled Worker Program, education was also one of the requirements.

One of the processes is for the applicant to prove his education through an academic credential evaluation. Hence, Academic Credential Evaluation summarizes its definition and purpose as follows: 1. To prove that you have that education, and that education is gained by you.

2. To prove that the total time you spent in school is equivalent to that of Canadian education system.

3. To prove that English, Math and Science courses you took from home country have the equivalent content and number of credit hours in Canada.

4. To prove that the educational institution you attended exist and recognize by the governing body of your home country.

Credential evaluation lies on the objective of establishing

that the individual has truly gained the basic education necessary to compete with the Canadian society’s working conditions and eventually, contribute to Canadian workforce.

On the other hand, Academic Credential Recognition is governed by the different Provincial Regulatory bodies which are somewhat similar in different provinces but have their own and specific

The vast majority of migrants in Canada are on precarious and temporary immigration permits.

Many are restricted to a single workplace, and therefore unable to assert their rights. Tapping into this under-utilized economic potential and ensuring that Canada meets its human rights obligations requires opening up work permits, and granting

permanent residence both on arrival to incoming migrant workers and to undocumented immigrants and other precarious status migrants already in the country.

Due to ineffective immigration and employment law, all low-wage Temporary Foreign Workers in Canada are stuck working for a single employer. It is difficult, if not impossible, for workers to change jobs even if the job is dangerous, making them sick, or if they are facing abuse.

“Looking into ways to get

Undocumented and temporary status immigrants in Canada who have proven work experiences and community ties in the country, many of whom do not have access to permanent residency, will be forced to eventually leave Canada. This is a massive drain on Canada’s economy as trained and experienced immigrants are pushed out in a revolving door immigration system.

“Permanent status for immigrants already in the country would immediately boost the economy, integrating skilled and established individuals and families who already work to take care of our communities,” added Josie Baker from Cooper Institute in Prince Edward Island. “Permanent status for undocumented and temporary status immigrants is the smart and effective move.”

In summary, a credential recognition to work as an Engineer in Canada is a complex process and entails a lot of patience, diligence, and perseverance. For Filipino Engineers, to be recognized as Engineer is never too late to acquire this recognition, after all, working hard is never be a challenge but working hard is our daily grind.

A Child’s Heart is Most Divine

Edmonton. January 13-14, 2017 – Saint Joseph Basilica and Maharaja Banquet Hall were both jam-packed by more or less a thousand devotees and attendees of the traditional Sinulog Festival being spearheaded by the VIZMIN (Visayas-Mindanao) Associations in Edmonton.

Indeed, without Divine Intervention, we can do nothing.

This cannot be renounced, not even by the famous agnostic as well as atheist in the world. It can

be testified by fact that “prior to the act of rejection, there must be something to be rejected.

Thereby, if we reject the existence of Divine or Divinity; therefore, that Divine or Divinity exists.

Can Divinity be fully grasped and understood by the human mind? Definitely not! This is the reason why the Word was made Flesh: Born, Died, yet Resurrected. These Revelations were good enough to prove that there is a Divine Power that holds

us all. The Power that saves us from the fires of hell, heals our illnesses, sustains our lives, and continuously forgives our sinfulness.

For the catholic believers, the Child Jesus or Sto. Nino, is one of the Most Titular Images that can tactually be approached in times of need.

Brief History of Sinulog Festival in Edmonton

The concept of celebrating the Sto. Nino Sinulog Festival was conceived way back in January 1994 by Mrs. Eustaquia Eschavez Armas, an ardent devotee of Sr Sto Nino De Cebu.

VISMIN Association , through their officers Lito Tan, Linda Armas, Merlyn Gonzales and Danny Gutang supported the idea.

Thus, the first Holy Mass for Sto. Nino in Edmonton was held at St. Clare's Church on Saturday, January 14, 1994.

The first Sinulog Festival was held in the evening of the same day at the Aldegrove Hall in Edmonton.

By the grace of God, the Sto. Nino Sinulog has been going on for the last 23 years and the attendees of the annual celebration continue to grow!

For this year's celebration, January 13, 2017, four priests : Reverend Fatgers Nilo Macapinlac, Rudy Ibale (who came all the way from Cebu), Matthew Hysell had concelebrated the Holy Mass at St Joseph's Basilica. The church was full of devotees.

On the following day, January 14, 2017, an estimated 1,000 devotees attended the Sinulog Festival at the Maharaja Hall. The devotees enjoyed glorifying and praising Baby Jesus through their Sinulog dances . They were so ecstatic .

The Sto. Nino devotees who came exclaimed, what a joyful and amazing occasion to celebrate our faith, tradition and culture, even in a foreign land!"

A Far-Reaching Journey into a Meaningful Coupleship Get envious of what is exemplary rather than of what is practiced irrationally.

For a heart to be called cordial, that must be pre-conditioned--similar to a machine which only works well when clean and pre-conditioned before the trip is on.

Lover’s Testimonies:"The greatest measure of love is to love without measure," St. Francis de Sales said. A heart filled with love is loving immeasurably. Prior to getting into a mutual partnership and in the short or long run, both should be tightly bound by their "I WILL and DO" proclamation of commitment by which all other couples have to admire of. St. Augustine of Hippo had also emphatically exclaimed: "My heart is restless until it rests in you." This is quite conjugal. Staying on the track; surpassing all the trials along the journey, especially when the rides and roads were so unfair is completely exemplary.

I saw a several couples here in Edmonton whose overwhelming love reign in their hearts. I have not known them for quite a while yet I can tell that their commitments are strong--strengthened by reconcilable differences. Arguing but not harming and hurting. Husbands act as lions while wives play as trainers. Thereby husbands most of the times are tamed. There is no violence because the latter have cups-filled with love and patience.

The reciprocity of love and submissiveness. One of the living examples I honestly get envious with is the Alberta Filipino Journal’s head publisher Jun and his wife Hermie Angeles, as I've personally observed how they respect each other. Kuya Jun has an awesome demonstration of love while ate Hermie is showing submissiveness; vice versa.

Despite the rough roads, they still keep on travailing towards the direction they aimed to reach; progressively moving forward for the dreams they've once ardently planned and designed. This is testified by their friends, relatives, and offspring. Their benevolent love for each other became the replica of Romeo and Juliet's "Through thick and thin" phenomenon. Forty one years has gone by, the recognition of one's incompleteness is the perfect reason why they have been intact and stuck in their marriage vows. Jun as the head and Hermie as the neck. They've also made sure that every time is a Valentine.

AWESOME.... Woman, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Friend and Community Leader!

Marilda Francisco Kane lives a colourful life. She grew up in Pakistan, joining the expatriate community there of Filipino diplomats, engineers, or hospital and school professionals. She then received a scholarship at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, California where she studied Pre - School Education. Immersing herself in more academics, she then completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the East, Philippines, majoring in English.

She is not only brains, but her talent includes modeling, where in the Philippines she joined several beauty pageants and modeling stints for FINA Magazine, Avon, Philippines Airlines, Rough Rider and Wrangler Jeans. Returning to her trade with Mrs. Sonia Roco, as

the Directress, she joined one of the first Pre - schools established in the Philippines.

Her career took a turn when she entered Miriam College as a Language and Reading Teacher at Miriam College. Still, she aspired to do more with her degree. She went on to author a series of book for the National Book Store where to this day she still receives royalties. Not only did she have a passion for the arts, Marilda also has a business mindset. Having parents in the real estate business in the Philippines, she succeeded them and became a Property Manager for their assets.

However, Marilda was bound for international aspirations. Just before coming to Canada, she lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she taught at the International School.

When she came to Canada, Marilda was pregnant and had no connections or friends. According to Marilda, "It is very difficult to arrive in a new country and not know anyone. Ties are an important factor to settling." Still, she drew on her past international experience where she learned to interpersonal skills dealing with people of various backgrounds. Restless and unwilling to settle, Marilda volunteered herself to her children's school, hence landing her first volunteer experience in Canada. From then on, her career in Canada took off. Working as a Liaison Worker for the ESL Centre, in Edmonton Catholic Schools, she helped gauge English capabilities of students, especially those with

Reflections of my grandmother

My grandmother was many things. Bold, quick-witted and tenacious. Charming, thoughtful and compassionate. She was a woman with deep conviction, one who possessed an unabashed intelligence and an elegance that carried her through her 97 years on earth.

Some knew her as Manang Ching, a trusted friend and confidant. Others knew her not personally but through the associations she helped found within the local Filipino diaspora.

To me and my family she was known as Mommy, Grandma and GG. My grandma was always present, and more than in a physical sense. She had keen sense and awareness of her family and friends, and was inquisitive in a way that was neither disingenuous nor overzealous. She understood the practicalities of life but also rooted her understanding of people and the universe in a hearty benevolence that helped guide and support her community and family.

It was this gumption and generosity that would remain a constant throughout her life.

Grandma was born in Jaro, Leyte in 1919, the eldest of 13 children to Sabino and Maria Quezon. In 1938 she graduated from the Cebu Normal School, and later went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Santo Tomas, and a Master of Arts in Education from Adamson University. She would later spend over 30 years working in the Philippine civil service as a teacher, school administrator and educational supervisor with Manila City Schools.

In 1971, my grandparents immigrated to Canada, reuniting a growing family that now included their first grandchild, and continuing work as a public servant with Alberta Health Care

Insurance. It was during this time that she began involving herself in the local Filipino community, gracing the wider Edmonton community with her passion and the belief in the sharing of cultures, which included helping to steer the first-ever Heritage Day Festival in 1975.

After retirement in 1984, she continued her pursuits in the community, volunteering countless hours to supporting local initiatives and organizations, and elevating the Filipino community in Edmonton. Alongside my grandfather Marcial, she founded the Philippine Cultural Society of Edmonton, and served as president of both the Filipino Senior Citizens Association and Concerned Canadian Filipinos for International Development Foundation.

She continued to give back well into her 90s, making a twice-aweek trek to the Edmonton General Hospital to help those in need, sometimes to the chagrin of her children and grandchildren.

The legacy that she has left on this community is immeasurable—the foundation of the Filipino community in Edmonton is very much grounded in her and always will be. And while she did not have want or desire of recognition, it is important to acknowledge the roots she and her peers began to sow for our generation in Canada over forty years ago.

More so, the impact that she has had on my family is profound and immense. She always spoke fondly of her family, sharing even the minutest aspects of our lives with her friends and acquaintances. What she never knew was how proud and grateful we were (and are) to have had her as our matriarch. She helped shape my own identity as a second generation Canadian and inform what that means for me: that love for community, an appreciation and respect for heritage and culture, and acceptance of oneself are always intertwined.

ynthia Hicks is one of those people who one can say was born to be in the theatre. She jokes about starting her dance career while still in her mother’s womb. Mom is Maria “Nanette” Hicks, who was the cofounder of Philippine Barangay

Performing Arts Society, and Dad is Graham Hicks, writer and former columnist at Edmonton Sun. Cynthia’s childhood was steeped into dance - Philippine folk dance, highlands, ballet, jazz and tap. She then discovered

drama classes via the Citadel Theatre School, eventually taking over her older sister’s role in the Christmas Carol at age 8, and then moving to the Edmonton Opera’s production of South Pacific. She remembers having so much fun at the theatre and being treated so well by other actors that she naturally kept on performing - in dance and musical theatre all the way to junior high, an opera production in the summer for the Fringe festival, and eventually challenging family tradition with her desire to study high school at the Victoria School for Performing Arts.

It was during this time, her

Grade 10 year, that my husband Jojo and I worked with Cynthia.

She joined our dance company, the Chameleon Dance Edmonton, in our performances at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland. At this time, aside from Chameleon, which had already a rather rigorous training and rehearsal schedule, Cynthia was also committed to Philippine Barangay, mostly as leader and choreographer, and the St. Albert Musical Theatre. I remember her rushing from one rehearsal to another. No matter how much I wanted to shake my head with what I then regarded as her “suicidal and masochistic”

artistic tendencies, I couldn’t help but commend her for her dedication, enthusiasm and persistence. Cynthia as a dancer was like a sponge and clay having the capacity to absorb corrections, and the malleability for our coaching. As one who has grown in the theatre, her approach to her art was and is intelligent and respectful.

At Grade 11, she joined the Citadel Theatre Young Musical Company. It was at this point, constantly surrounded by likeminded individuals, and having acting, directing & dancing

hile it is true that there is always be a Most Valuable Player award in Group Sports; but it is also true that the MVP just receives the prestigious awards in behalf of the Team. It means that no success is solely owned by an individual player. Everyone, from the organizers, families and friends, supporters and sponsors, have contributed to a success. In fact, the winners have to also recognize the losers for making them great.

Hence, the glorious award or awards have always been given to the entire Team.

The Proof The recently culminated National Soccer Championships being won by the Alberta (Inter U18 Girls) has entitled them as the undefeated Team by beating Ontario during the finals, scoring 1-0. They’d also defeated the Edmonton Strikers by the score of 4-0 during the provincials.

Kindness from a stranger to a stranger Let me start the year with a feel-good article.

It’s my first winter in Vancouver.

Different from Alberta winter as snow here is wet. They call it slush. The second snow storm created more havoc than the first. There was chaos on the road. Hundreds of passengers were stranded,myself included. Wet snow makes driving really dangerous.

Bus drivers would pull over at the side of the road especially they don’t use winter tires. Passengers either wait for hours inside the bus until road condition improves or, hitch-hike.

I understand the anger and despair for to be stranded at the middle of the road and walk in wet snow, is just frustrating to say the least. Not to mention the cold although for an Albertan like me, Vancouver winter is relatively warm.

But I wrote this not to highlight the anger, sometimes we have to pat our own back and look at the glass halffull.

Monday morning I was inside the bus going to the sky train station.

Rain was pouring. It snowed whole day the day before so imagine how bad the road condition was at a time when people were commuting to work. The stretch of 41st Avenue is a hilly road, it is up and down every few blocks. Bus drivers decided not to proceed to the sky train for fear of accident, they pulled over at the side.

The road became a bus parking lot.

People got off and walked on the messy sidewalk not knowing where to catch a ride. I decided to remain inside the bus.

I have never hitch-hiked in Canada but I was persuaded.

We stood at the road and immediately, a young lady pulled over. We said we’re going to the sky train. She willingly opened the car to let us in. The road was covered with thick ice, two busses were slanting at the middle, so our driver decided

I was very late to work but I was willing to come with her if only for her safety.

In an interview, Marilda emphasized the value of volunteering.

"Always remember those who have helped you along the way and be open and willing to give back to the community by volunteering your time.

It doesn't have to be immediately but sometime down the road. It can be in many roles, the school where your children are going to, the church, an organization, a hospital, even a function at your work. Volunteering is an opportunity to connect with your community to create a positive impact. I believe volunteerism is crucial for creating healthy, vibrant, and connected Alberta communities.

Through volunteering, you can create a positive impact and help shape the future for your community. It feels awesome when you can say, "I MADE A DIFFERENCE!" During her 5 years break from Immigration and Settlement Services, Marilda still volunteered her time with the Community and helped in many projects. She is presently the President of the Filipino Support Services Society and

the Vice-President of the Association of Batanguenos in Alberta, an honorary member in several Filipino Associations. She has served on several Boards. She was the first Filipino to serve on the Board of EISA (Edmonton Immigrant Services Association), was the Treasurer for one year and volunteers at their Casino fundraiser to this day. Her break took her to Westlawn Courts, a Senior’s Complex of 199 suites, where she worked as the CAO (Chief Administrative Officer). She also worked at ASSIST Community Services Centre SW Office, which opened its doors officially to newcomers on March 28, 2013.

She considers herself a “Social Entrepreneur” and is involved with many projects.

For her dedication in helping the Filipino community, she has earned various awards such as the HIYAS Award of Excellence, for Community Service, RISE (Recognizing Immigrant Success and Endeavours) Awards for Health, Human Services and Education, Rhoda Abada Award for Outstanding Leadership and Community Service and, the Alberta Centennial Medal, paying tribute

to individuals for achievements that have benefited fellow citizens, the community and the province.

In addition to this impressive resume, she recently received the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers, which recognizes her significant contribution to the community. This award stems from the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award which was established by former Governor General Romeo LeBlanc, to recognize individuals who volunteer their time to help others and to build a smart and caring nation.

And finally, to top it off, she was surprised to receive an invitation by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnson, Governor General of Canada, to a presentation ceremony of Canadian honours on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 10 am at the Shaw Conference Centre, 9797 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton.

However, the awards did not come without the sacrifice. How did she face the challenges she encountered in Canada? Marilda believed because of her background and growing up with different cultures, she learned to adapt. In her opinion, adjusting to Canada

native Filipino tongue, helping them transition to the Canadian system.

Here in Canada, she found her calling in helping her kababayans.

Her next position was Catholic Social Services, at the Millwoods Welcome Centre for Immigrants site, where she worked as a Settlement Counsellor for Immigration and Settlement Service, where she was in charge of Filipino Drop-In and Information Centre. Together with fellow Filipino volunteers, they helped welcome kababayans in need, even after office hours.

Before coming to Canada she taught at the International School in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her other educational attainments include being “Grandfathered” into the Alberta College of Social Workers, certificate in Emergency Paramedics and becoming a Doula.

In Canada, Marilda first worked as a Liaison Worker for the ESL Centre, Edmonton Catholic Schools.

I arrived the office at 10:30 a.m. I felt good despite the chaos on the road. Believe me I felt good.

We were helped by a stranger, I helped a stranger, another stranger seated next to me helped a stranger.

The world is beautiful after all. The inconvenience on the road, my soaked boots and frozen feet - I forgot all about them.

It’s true that sometimes we have to pay attention to the neglected stuff and notice the unnoticed. When they say we have to stop and smell the flowers, it could mean literally or figuratively. Flowers could be good deeds or good souls. Sometimes the kindest souls don’t have names yet they are the ones who leave lasting imprints in our hearts.

Marilda's advice to fellow immigrants, "As an immigrant you can be successful in Canada or any foreign country by learning about the country before you immigrate.

Find settlement agencies in the area where you are going to settle. Let them help you and guide you. A good job is important but you need to also enjoy yourself and have your family enjoy the community where you live.

Be open minded by learning about the different cultures in your community.

Give back to your community when you can by volunteering. Be positive.

Always remember your roots and those who have helped you in your journey to success. Follow the laws, they are there for your protection.

Be happy. Follow your dreams. Your success as an immigrant will reflect on you, your family, your community, and your other future successes!

Meet Canada's New Immigration Minister...

The Honourable Ahmed D. Hussen MP

MARJORIE CARMONA NEWMAN mcnimmigration@live.ca Marjorie Carmona Newman is a REGULATED CANADIAN IMMIGRATION CONSULTANT based in Edmonton, Alberta. She currently serves as Prairie Chapter representative for Canadian Association of Professional Immigration Consultants (CAPIC) in the Governance and Nomination Committee and Education Director for CAPIC Prairie last year.

The new Minister of Immigration is an immigrant himself and a lawyer by profession. He successfully won as a Liberal candidate in the Ontario riding of York SouthWeston in the 2015 election.

Although Hussen identifies his nationality as primarily Canadian, he indicated in a recent interview that, “It is quite an honour and a privilege to be put in charge of the very department that I was a client of many, many years ago.”

Hussen’s career is a compelling journey. At age 16, he immigrated from Mogadishu, Somalia, to Ontario, Canada.

After high school, Hussen obtained employment pumping gas at a station in Mississauga

until the day he noticed a flyer of a public barbeque event hosted by George Smitherman, a provincial politician of what was then the Ontario Liberal Party.

This barbeque incited Hussen’s involvement with politics. At the event, Hussen made an impression on Smitherman, and by so doing, obtained a recommendation for a job at the Ontario Liberal Party. Hussen was committed to this role until November 2003 where he was then promoted to Special Assistant upon the victory of the Ontario Liberal Party in the election of that year.

After 2 years of this role, Hussen assisted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Youth Engaged

After high school, she spent a year at the University of Alberta, applied for six theatre schools across Canada, and got accepted in all six. No mean feat. She elected to go to the National Theatre School in Montreal, which was such a pipe dream in the first place, and graduated in 2015. In between all these, she underwent training at the Performing Arts Project at North Carolina, the Banff Centre Musical Theatre Intensive, and the Broadway Theatre Project in Florida.

Based now in Toronto, Cynthia’s life consists of the

valleys and peaks of an actor’s life - endless auditions, back to back bookings, indeterminate lulls. It is exciting in that it is unpredictable, varied, nomadic and competitive - the exact same traits that one may hate about it. She has done commercials, workshopped plays, performed in a pantomime musical, works in a restaurant and babysits during lean months, and is the General Manager of Hataw, a Philippine fusion dance company in Toronto.

In the immediate future, a web series and a tour production are lined up.

Cynthia has a very strong sense of community and civic commitment, which she says is her Mom’s big influence. Since her 16th birthday, she has been doing personal fundraisers to benefit orphanages in the Philippines, requesting for

Hussen’s significant community involvement is paralleled by his academic background. In 2002, he earned a BA in History at York University, then pursued law at the University of Ottawa, completing his bar exam in 2012.

embodies the very best of Canada. He has a global outlook, an altruistic nature, and a clear ‘can-do’ attitude that has allowed him to succeed in academia and public service. He has also proven to be a bridge builder between the various communities that make up the country[.]”

I like keeping tabs on all our dancers. I hope that they live their dreams and especially for those who are still into the arts or theatre, I worry when or if they live a precarious and “starving” artist’s life. I reflect on what I know about Cynthia and I see images of someone finding a calling at a young age, propped up by a supportive family; a determined and hardworking

girl who will stop at nothing to achieve her goal - availing of every possible grant, bursary, scholarship, training program, working odd jobs to save money; smart and introspective using her art experiences and work to unravel her layers as a person; and courageous in following her bliss.

Cynthia has dedicated her life to her art and lives her life through her art. It is one roller coaster ride where she revels in all it has to offer. Oh yes, Cynthia Hicks knows how to live her life and at the very least, she will just be alright. To quote John Wooden, “ Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.”

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship

he Nazareno Council No. 12904, in association with Holy Trinity Council No. 12353, Father Bonner Council No. 7599, Monsignor Joseph Malone Council No. 13312, Queen of Poland Council No. 14490 and St. Joseph’s College Council No. 10060 of District No. 13 of the Alberta-NWT State Council, has just concluded the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, council and district levels on Saturday, January 28, 2017. This event is sponsored annually since 1972, with winners progressing through local councils, district, and regional and state levels competition.

International champions are announced by the K of C International headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions.

The purpose of this program is to promote to the youth the spirit of unity, togetherness and sportsmanship and to foster the spirit of sharing and caring for our school children to make

them role models in our society through sportsmanship.

The committee composed of: Chairman – Bro. Alex Ibasco, Ex-Officio - DD Manuel Ibasco, Ex-Officio - GK Rolly T. Marcos, ExOfficio - DGK Armand Bernabe, of the Nazareno Council No. 12904; and members are Grand Knights of District No. 13 that include GK Leonardo Sosa - Council 7599, GK Richard Iwuc - Council 10060, GK Per Jorgensen - Council 12353, GK Edward Hill - Council 13312 and GK Jan Chowela - Council 14490.

H

aving recently travelled during one of the most busiest times of the year – the winter Holiday season – I have come to the conclusion that the airport, as crazy and chaotic as it seems, doesn’t have to be a difficult experience.

Missing a flight or forgetting passports and other essential items, are a traveller’s worst nightmare – the last thing you want to do before embarking on a trip is to be stressed over the little things. So here are a few simple tips to ensure you will have a swift and smooth experience at your local airport.

Check-in Online When possible, always check-in much in advance.

This will help in avoiding any potential long lines, confusion, and delays that may occur.

Pack Lower Than the Maximum Weight Limit To be safe, it is always good to pack around 3 to 5 pounds lower than the maximum allowed luggage weight. This is important for a few main reasons. First, you always want to be a little less, in case your scale at home may be calibrated a bit different than the one at the airport – chances are this probably won’t be a problem, but it’s always good to be safe.

As well, you might buy a souvenir or two, or perhaps even treat yourself to something nice while on your trip, so always leave room for the items and

treats you may bring home. It would be heartbreaking to leave some things behind, or spend unnecessary money on a few extra pounds of luggage.

However, if you do know you will be coming home with extra weight, be proactive and bring an extra suitcase or bag to accommodate the items you buy.

Ease of Access Going through security is hardly an enjoyable time for anyone, especially when it’s the busy season; you’re waiting in anticipation, the person behind you continuously pushes their carry-on bag up against your back, all the while you’re thinking of when you should take your shoes off, empty all your pockets, pull out your liquids – the list goes on.

So here is a clever tip to follow.

When you prepack your carry-on bag, ensure to pack all your liquids last, and don’t forgot to have them all in a Ziploc bag. Having them packed all together near the opening of your bag will make them easy and quick to access, and most of all, it ensures you’re not frantically digging around for them. Overall, when packing your carry-on bag, make sure to group together the items you may have to pull out, it avoids the hassle of searching through your bag. With this in mind, you’ll be speeding through the security line.

Buy Survival Snacks Before Boarding Whether your flight is two hours or eight, it is always smart to have a little snack and beverage with you before you board. Sometimes when I land, I find myself a little hungry – and I know I’m not the only one.

Depending on the time of day you fly, you may be landing near or around the time of an important

meal of the day – but of course this varies and fluctuates per traveller. Ultimately, you never know when you’re going to be hungry or what kind of situation you’re going to be in when you land. Having a snack with you, avoids the hassle of trying to read foreign signs to direct you to nearby food, ATM machines, or where to go for your luggage; at least with a snack you can

ensure you still will be fed – one less essential thing to worry about.

So pick up some food at the convenience store before you board – my personal favourite is trail mix or a small sandwich with a bottle of my favorite juice.

Plus, we all think and function much better when we all got a little food in our stomachs.
