‫مفه���وم اإلس���تدامة أصبح الي���وم مفهوم���ًا عالميًا‬ ‫معت���رف ب���ه وبض���رورة تطبيق���ه ف���ي كاف���ة مناحي‬ ‫الحياة وليس فقط في البناء ‪ .‬في منطقتنا العربية‬ ‫ه���ذا المفهوم مع األس���ف غي���ر مفه���وم ‪ ،‬إن أصل‬ ‫كلم���ة إس���تدامة العربي���ة يرج���ع إلى ترجم���ة معنى‬ ‫«‪ »sustainability‬إلى العربية وهي كلمة إس���تدامة‬ ‫ومع األس����ف فه����ذه الكلمة للذين ل����م يبحثوا جيدًا‬ ‫في األصل اإلنجليزي يرون أان اإلس����تدامة تعني في‬ ‫البن����اء قوة البناء ومتانته التي تضمن له البقاء إلى‬ ‫األبد فلقد س����معت هذا المعنى يتردد على لس����ان‬ ‫متخصصي����ن ولي����س أن����اس عاديي����ن ‪ ،‬أو قد تعني‬ ‫في حالة توس����عة المبنى اإلس����تمرار في إس����تعمال‬ ‫نف����س الم����واد وقد س����معت ذلك من مهندس����ين‬ ‫كذل����ك ‪ .‬وم����ع األس����ف إن دل ذلك على ش����يء فهو‬ ‫ي����دل على قلة إطالع هؤالء بل وعدم معرفتهم بما‬ ‫ي����دور م����ن تطور ف����ي مجاالته����م‪ .‬وإذا كان هذا هو‬ ‫ح����ال المتخصصي����ن فكي����ف يمكن أن نتص����ور حال‬ ‫المجتمع تجاه اإلستدامة وضروراتها ‪ .‬ومن الضروري‬ ‫إذن أن نح����اول هن����ا إعطاء معن����ى صحيح لمفهوم‬ ‫اإلس����تدامة ‪ .‬اإلس����تدامة قبل كل ش����يء تهدف إلى‬ ‫إس����تدامة الحي����اة ولي����س األش����ياء الت����ي نصنعها‪،‬‬ ‫فف����ي مج����ال البن����اء مث��ل� ً‬ ‫ا هناك ح����االت ال تدف����ع إلى‬ ‫خاصي����ة المتان����ة والبقاء عم����ر طويل مث����ل المباني‬ ‫الخفيف����ة الت����ي يج����ب أن تس����مح بعد اإلنته����اء من‬ ‫الحاج����ة لها في موقع ما فكها وتركيبها في موقع‬ ‫أخر وإس����تدامتها هنا تكمن في إعادة إستعمالها‪.‬‬ ‫كم����ا أن المتان����ة قد تك����ون عائقًا في بع����ض المواد‬ ‫القابل����ة إلعادة التدوير‪ ،‬فكل م����ا كانت المواد صلبة‬ ‫ومتماسكة بين بعضها البعض يكون من الصعب‬

‫فصله����ا وإع����ادة تدويره����ا ‪ ،‬فتدوي����ر الم����واد وإعادة‬ ‫إس����تعمالها في إط����ار ما يعرف باإلقتص����ادي الدائري‬ ‫ويعني ف����ي قطاع البناء إدخ����ال معايير في صناعة‬ ‫البناء تس����اعد على إعادة إس����تعمال المواد الناتجة‬ ‫ع����ن هدم المباني أو الحفري����ات وتصنيعها بطريقة‬ ‫وأش����كال تس����اعد على إعادة إس����تعمالها ‪ .‬كما أن‬ ‫لإلس����تدامة تأثي����ر هام عل����ى البناء يتع����دى النطاق‬ ‫المح����دد لعملي����ات البناء مث����ل التوفير ف����ي الطاقة‬ ‫أو ف����ي الم����اء أو النفاي����ات وهن����ا اإلس����تدامة تعن����ي‬ ‫بكل وض����وح حماية البش����رية من إس����تنزاف الموارد‬ ‫والحياة الطبيعية والتي تس����هم في بقاء اإلنس����ان‬ ‫بهدف إس����تدامة الحياة البش����رية‪ .‬في المدن تعني‬ ‫اإلستدامة إس����تدامة الحياة اإلقتصادية واإلجتماعية‬ ‫والثقافي����ة وذلك يعني إعادة النظ����ر في التخطيط‬ ‫القدي����م وتطويره من حيث زيادة كثافة البناء داخل‬ ‫الم����دن الت����ي تس����اعد على تقري����ب المس����افات بين‬ ‫الخدمات والمس����اكن وتفتح المج����ال لكافة طبقات‬ ‫المجتم����ع من اإلس����تفادة منها فالمدين����ة التقليدية‬ ‫كان����ت تؤدي إل����ى جعل األكث����ر حظًا األكث����ر قربًا من‬ ‫الخدم����ات بينم����ا األقل حظًا يعيش����ون على األطراف‬ ‫بعي����دًا عنه����ا وه����ذا جانب م����ن ما يمك����ن أن نطلق‬ ‫عليه اإلس����تدامة اإلجتماعي����ة واإلقتصادية والثقافية‬ ‫في المدن‪ ،‬التى تعطي لكل ساكن حقه من الحياة‬ ‫الكريمة‪ .‬اإلس����تدامة له����ا أهداف كثيرة ومتش����عبة‬ ‫منها ما يؤثر مباش����رة عل����ى المباني ومنها ما يأتي‬ ‫تأثي����ره نتيج����ة للمباني أو ألس����باب قد تب����دو بعيدة‬ ‫عن البناء وربما هذا أمر طبيعي فالبناء يؤثر ويتأثر‬ ‫بكافة نواحي الحياة ‪ ،‬وعلى أية حال فإن اإلس����تدامة‬ ‫ليست مجرد متانة مباني‪.‬‬ ‫الناشر ورئيس التحرير‬

These organisations have pledged to take urgent action to ensure their own portfolios of buildings operate at net zero carbon by 2030 and, for some cities, states and regions to enact regulations to ensure all new buildings operate at net zero carbon from 2030, and all buildings, including existing, operate at net zero carbon by 2050. ‫شراكة بين تويوتا وبناسونيك إلنشاء مدن ذكية‬

Toyota & Panasonic to Merge Housing Units and Team Up on ‘Smart Town’ Toyota and Panasonic to merge housing units and team up on <smart town> busines Toyota Motor Corp. and Panasonic Corp. said Thursday they will integrate their housing businesses in an expansion of an existing tieup, as they seek to collaborate on “town development” for next-generation lifestyles where homes and vehicles are connected to the internet.

The companies plan to set up a joint venture on Jan. 7, 2020. Toyota will focus on new mobility services using self-driving technology, while Panasonic brings strengths in developing smart homes equipped with appliances supported by internet and other digital technologies.

The venture, Prime Life Technologies Corp., will bring housing units of both companies under its wing, including Toyota Housing Corp., Misawa Homes Co. and Panasonic Homes Co. The move by the leading carmaker and electronics manufacturer comes amid shrinking demand in the domestic housing market due to Japan’s declining population.

Toyota has been stepping up efforts to develop autonomous cars and offer various services, especially for elderly people living in rural areas, including transportation, food and package delivery and ride-hailing.

It is planning to conduct testing for potential market feasibility in various regions in the early 2020s using the e-Palette concept vehicle — a box-shaped, battery-powered vehicle with no driver’s seat that was unveiled by Toyota last year.

Panasonic has been developing homes equipped

After printing, the bathroom is furnished with toilet fittings to become a pre-fabricated unit, ready for use in construction projects. Its interior includes a sink, mirror, shower, toilet bowl, ceramic tiled walls and flooring, complete with concealed drains and piping. This could potentially help firms build prefabricated bathroom units (PBU) about 30 per cent more quickly and 30 per cent lighter than current PBUs. In the past four years, the research team focused on

developing a special concrete mix which is fluid enough to flow through the hoses and print nozzle, yet can harden fast enough so that the next layer is able to be printed on it. On top of ensuring a consistent print quality, the final product also has to be as strong as conventional concrete.

The printing process takes half the time needed in the construction of a conventional bathroom unit that uses concrete casting. The fittings, tiling and finishing will typically take another five days.

This innovation was developed by a joint research team led by Assoc Prof Tan Ming Jen from NTU’s Singapore

Centre for 3D Printing, in partnership with Sembcorp Design and Construction, and Sembcorp Architects & Engineers.

The Singapore Centre for 3D Printing was set up by National Research Foundation (NRF) Singapore, to conduct research and development on 3D printing technology, and accelerate the adoption of the technology by companies.

This Proof-of-Concept aims to improve productivity for Singapore’s building and construction industry through the use of digital and robotic fabrication methods to reduce skilled labour and manpower requirements.

‫لقطات مختلفة لبناء اجلسر‬ Since the 2015 Paris Agreement, 195 countries have committed to accelerate and intensify actions and investments for a sustainable low carbon future and the optimisation of raw material.

In this context, a consortium made of local contractors and precast concrete manufacturer Spanbeton, a subsidiary of Consolis Group, have been partnering to design and build a circular

viaduct in Kampen, The Netherlands. A first in The Netherlands – supported

by Dutch government which launched a wide Circular Economy programme in 2016. The viaduct has a span of 20 meters and consists of 40 concrete elements, all manufactured at Spanbeton’s factory in Koudekerk aan den Rijn. To reach the goal of circular building, Spanbeton and its partners invented new

solutions such as the joints between the elements. The working methods have been really different, really open, bringing together people from different expertise and skills.

Meeting circular construction challenges Precast concrete makes it possible to meet circular construction challenges: modularity, traceability and reuse.

Skyports and Volocopter Join Forces on UAM Infrastructure

Skyports and Volocopter announced a cooperation to build the first mobile Volo-Port for air taxis. UKbased global vertiport owner and operator Skyports and air taxi pioneer Volocopter unveiled plans for the VoloPort – the physical landing pads for so-called eVTOL (electric take-off and landing) – through stunning designs produced by internationally renowned agency Brandlab.

Ground-based vertiport infrastructure is critical to the success of future urban air mobility (UAM), including air taxi operations in congested cities. Construction of the first Volo-Port will be completed later this year.

The partners plan to build it in Singapore for the scheduled public flight trials

in the second half of 2019. A full-scale Volocopter vehicle is on display at the GreenTech Festival. The Volo-Port prototype will: Enable real-life testing of the full customer journey to perfect the passenger experience; Showcase planned customer services, including pre-flight checks, passenger lounges and boarding procedures; Allow practical testing of ground operations and services, including battery swaps and charging, maintenance, safety and security; Provide the opportunity for authorities and industry regulators to interact with the infrastructure and provide feedback before they are asked to approve the final design. Vertiports are the only physical infrastructure

required for air taxis to commence operations in cities in the near future. Volo-Ports are designed to provide passengers with a seamless air taxi experience that is safe, secure, and relaxing.

Black Box is a small first floor rear extension to a mid terrace Victorian era house in Islington. The client, a professional couple, wanted a space that could function both as a home office and occasional guest bedroom with en suite bathroom.

The extension is conceived as a ‘reconfigurable box’ in dark stained Siberian Larch.

Two bespoke counterbalanced shutters are manually operated internally using winches.

These allow for multiple configurations of the ‘box; from fully open with window overhang to counter summer

solar gain, to shut tight.

The dynamic nature of the façade encourages the user to interact with the architecture and adapt their environment for comfort.

The drawings show an extension at ground floor that was designed together with ‘black box’ at first floor (and approved under the same planning application).

The client chose to phase the implementation of this scheme with the first-floor element being delivered first and the ground floor component to follow at a later date.

‫دور المخططين ‪ :‬يعتمد التخطيط الحديث للمشاريع‬ ‫التجارية على معايير جديدة تشارك في صنع مدن‬ ‫حديثة قابلة لسهولة الحياة فيها ومنها مراعاة البيئة‬ ‫المبنية والمحافظة عليها باإلضافة إلى التنوع الوظيفي‬ ‫والتنوع في طبيعة اإلستعماالت ‪ .‬اليوم وبعد أن كانت‬ ‫المراكز التجارية تبنى بعيدًا أو على أطراف المدن مما‬ ‫كان يزيد من الراحالت اليومية التي تعتمد على السيارة‬ ‫أصبح اليوم من الضروي أن تكون المحالت التجارية‬ ‫قريبة من الناس بحيث يمكن الوصول إليها مشيًا‬ ‫وبحيث تكون في مواقع تضمن حيوية األحياء السكنية‬ ‫التي تخدمها وبالتالي هناك دور جديد وهام يجب‬ ‫أن يلعبه المخطط إلنجاح وتحول في تحديد المواقع‬ ‫المالئمة للمراكز التجارية ‪.‬‬ ‫دور المصمم المعماري ‪ :‬في هذا العدد نستعرض عدد‬ ‫من المشاريع التجارية من جهات مختلفة من العالم‬ ‫ويهدف إستعرضها إلى التعرف على دور التصميم‬ ‫المعماري في تحقيق النجاح لهذه المشاريع ‪.‬‬ ‫المشروع األول هو مركز تجاري ملحق بمبني مركز‬ ‫التجارة العالمي في أبوظبي وهو مجمع متعدد‬ ‫اإلستعماالت من تصميم مكتب ‪Foster & Partners‬‬ ‫ويمثل المركز قاعدة يرتفع فوقها برجين مكتبيين ‪.‬‬ ‫هناك إختالف في المواد المستعملة فالقاعدة تبدو‬ ‫وكأنها سوق تقليدي شيد بمواد طبيعية بينما األبراج‬ ‫هي من الزجاج ‪ .‬يرجع اإلختالف إلى رغبة المصمم‬ ‫في إعادة الطابع التاريخي لألسواق في أبوظبي إلى‬ ‫الحاضر يتميز السوق من الداخل بعدد من المعايير‬ ‫اإلستدامية مثل إنفتاحه على الخارج وإستخدام‬ ‫التهوية الطبيعية لمعظم أوقات السنة بينما يمكن‬ ‫إغالقه وإستعمال التكييف الميكني إذا لزم ‪ .‬كما‬ ‫يتميز بتوفير اإلضاء الطبيعية من خالل سقفه الذي‬ ‫غطي سطحه بحديقة معلقة تطل عليها األبراج ‪.‬‬ ‫المشروع يتعامل ببساطة فائقة مع المناخ الخاص‬ ‫بمدينة أبوظبي لكي يصبح السوق مكانًا جاذبًا للتنزه‬ ‫والتسوق فى إطار مناخ طبيعي ‪.‬‬ ‫المشروع الثاني هو محل تجاري كبير هو جاليري الفايت‬ ‫الذائع الصيت في فرنسا من تصميم مكتب ‪. ‫المتكاملة والمتوازنة التى إستعرضناها في مجلة‬ ‫البناء ‪ .‬وربما يكون ذلك نتيجة لسهولة تصميم هذا‬ ‫النوع من المشاريع فهو مشروع يجب أن يكون مفتوح‬ ‫للخارج لتوفير أكبر قدر من التهوية ‪ ،‬كما أن موقعه‬ ‫يتميز بعالقته المباشرة مع وظيفته فسوق السمك‬ ‫يطل مباشرة على البحر ‪ .‬التصميم مبسط وهو‬ ‫يفصل بين عمليات سوق الجملة وآلياتها وسوق البيع‬ ‫للجمهور بوضعهما في مستويات مختلفة ‪ ،‬من جهة‬ ‫أخرى فإن التصميم لم يدخر وسعًا في تحقيق أكبر‬ ‫قدر من معايير اإلستدامة من توفير في الطاقة والمياه‬ ‫واإلستفادة من الحرارة الناتجة عن تشغيل اآلالت إلعادة‬ ‫إستعمالها في التبريد ‪ .‬كما اهتم التصميم بمشكلة‬ ‫النفايات الناتجة عن السوق من خالل إعادة تدويرها‪،‬‬ ‫بحيث إستطاع التصميم توفير نصف كمية الطاقة‬ ‫والمياه والنفايات الناتجة من إستهالك المبنى لها ‪.‬‬ ‫المشروع الرابع هو مشروع لمحل تجاري في مدينة‬ ‫الكويت من تصميم مكتب ‪ . OMA‬المشروع مقدم‬ ‫على هيئة دراسات ولكن أهميته ترجع إلى خبرة‬ ‫المكتب المصمم في تصميم المباني التجارية للماركات‬ ‫العالمية ونتيجة ألبحاثه المتعمقة في هذا المجال ‪.‬‬ ‫يركز التصميم هنا على معالجة قصور تجاري كبير‬ ‫في المراكز التجارية نتيجة لتجاور محالت العالمات‬ ‫التجارية الشهيرة جنبًا إلى جنب بطريقة يصعب على‬ ‫المتسوقين التمييز بينها ولذلك لجأ المصمم إلى‬ ‫إقتراح إضافة إستعماالت متنوعة ثقافية وفنية تتخلل‬ ‫بين محالت الماركات العالمية وتجعل هناك مجال‬ ‫للتعرف عليها جيدًا تحتوي اإلستعماالت على مساحات‬ ‫لعروض األزياء وأخرى لتقديم عروض ثقافية ومقاهى‪.‬‬ ‫وإلستغالل أقصى قدر من المساحات للفعاليات‬ ‫المختلفة تقسم حوائط عريضة المحل إلى أقسام‬ ‫تفصل بين اإلستعماالت المختلفة وتحتوي على خزائن‬ ‫للبضائع وغرف لتغيير المالبس كما تضم مسارات‬ ‫الشبكات الميكانيكية المختلفة والهيكل اإلنشائي ‪.‬‬ ‫المشروع الخامس هو مشروع سوق تجاري في مدينة‬ ‫لينجانج التابعة لشنغهاي في الصين من تصميم‬ ‫مكتب ‪ . Shanghai ZF Architectural Design‬المشروع‬ ‫يحاول أن يدخل مقياس إنساني إلى عمارة السوق‬ ‫يذكر باألسواق التاريخية كما يستخدم وسائل زخرفية‬ ‫متعددة إلضفاء جو من التنوع في التشكيل منها‬ ‫األلوان والمفردات المعمارية المختلفة ‪.‬‬

‫واجهات السوق اخلارجية‬ From the Architect Report: Abu Dhabi’s Central Market is one of the oldest sites in the city. Inspired by the traditional architecture of the Gulf this scheme aims to reinvent the market place, giving the city a new civic heart. By offering an alternative to the globalised one-size-fits-all shopping mall it offers a distinctive modern interpretation of the regional vernacular. As a shopping experience it combines luxury goods boutiques with food markets and craft-based trades. Like the traditional souk, these different experiences are brought together in an interior architecture of dappled sunlight, bright colours and fountains, with a changing rhythm of squares, courtyards and alley ways.

For up to six months of the year the climate here is very pleasant – comfortable enough to stroll and sit outside. That has inspired a sequence of public routes and squares in which the barriers between inside and outside are dissolved. Open at night as well as during the day, these new spaces provide an important central venue in the city during festivals and 31 Albenaa

celebrations and are cooled naturally when conditions allow.

For the remainder of the year, the spaces can be enclosed by roof panels that slide into place to enable the internal environment to be controlled more closely. The perforations in the roof and interior panels – a pattern developed with a scholar of Islamic arts – continue outside, wrapping the podium building in a textured facade. The design of the panels is based on octagonal forms, which reference both traditional zellij tilework and more recent research into mathematical geometry. Continuing the greenery of Abu Dhabi, the site is generously landscaped, the roofs of the podium buildings forming a series of terraced gardens. Rising above this dense, close-grained ‘mat’ are two towers, of different heights and massing, containing offices, apartments and a combination of a hotel and serviced apartments. Their façades are smooth, reflective surfaces that need little maintenance in this dusty desert environment, with layers of internal shading that control glare & solar gain.

‫في السنة يشجع السكان على اإلستمتاع بالخروج‬ ‫والتنزه ‪ ،‬فالسوق مفتوح على الخارج وترتبط فضاءاته‬ ‫من ممرات وأفنية بالفضاء العام للمدينة ‪ .‬وهو مفتوح‬ ‫في النهار وفي الليل بحيث توفر فضاءاته الداخلية مكانًا‬ ‫مناسبًا ومريحًا يجذب السكان للتنزه فيه في المناسبات‬ ‫واإلحتفاالت ‪ .‬توفر عمارة السوق طرق تهوية طبيعية‬ ‫تساعد على تلطيف الجو في فضاءاته الداخلية في بعض‬ ‫أوقات أشهر الصيف الغير مرتفعة الحرارة أما في أشهر‬ ‫الصيف الشديدة الحرارة فيتم إقفال أسقفه بتغطيات‬ ‫منزلقة داخل السقف مما يسمح بإستعمال التكييف‬ ‫الميكني ‪ .‬قسم السوق من الداخل بقواطع على شكل‬ ‫مشربيات تم تصميمها من قبل حرفيوا فنون إسالمية‬ ‫تمتد هذه المشربيات لتغطي واجهات السوق بينما تحول‬ ‫سطحه إلى حديقة غناء متعددة المستويات‪.‬‬

‫في باريس إفتتح مؤخرًا محل تجاري كبير جديد لمحالت جاليري‬ ‫الفايت لألزياء المشهورة في فرنسا وعالميًا إحتل المحل مبنى‬ ‫قديم يرجع إلى الثالثينات من القرن العشرين وكان يأوي بنكًا ثم‬ ‫تعاقب عليه مؤسسات تجارية مختلفة يقع المحل على أشهر‬ ‫شارع في العالم وهو شارع الشانز إيليزيه ويعرض األزياء والمأكوالت‬ ‫واألغذية والمنتجات والسلع الحياتية المختلفة ‪ .‬تبلغ مساحة المحل‬ ‫‪ ٦،٨٠٠‬م‪ ٢‬موزعة على ‪ ٤‬أدوار وهو بذلك يعتبر أكبر محل تجاري في‬ ‫الشانزإيليزيه‪ .‬وكان مكتب ‪ BIG‬قد فاز بمسابقة تصميم المشروع‬ ‫في عام ‪٢٠١٦‬م‪ .‬يحافظ التصميم علـى العمارة األصلية للمبنى‬ ‫وتفاصيلها من طراز أرديكو األوروبي المنشأ ‪ ،‬مع إعادة صياغة‬ ‫حديثة لها‪ ،‬ومع توجه المحافظة وإبراز العمارة األصلية للمبنى يركز‬ ‫التصميم على التأثيث الداخلي لتحقيق أهدافه المعمارية ‪ .‬يقع‬ ‫المدخل على الشانزإيليزيه ويتميز بعمارته على هيئة نفق منحدر‬ ‫ينقل الزوار من أجواء الشانزإيلزيه إلى أجو اء جليري الفايت يفتح‬ ‫النفق داخل المحل على قاعة إستقبال دائرية كبرى بإرتفاع ‪ ٤‬أدوار‬ ‫يمكن منها النزول أو الصعود إلى أقسام المحل المختلفة ‪ ،‬وتغطي‬ ‫القاعة قبة زجاجية كبيرة تم إعادة تصميمها لكي توفر أكبر قدر من‬ ‫اإلضاءة الطبيعية ‪ .‬للصعود إلى األدوار العليا هناك سلم إحتفالي‬ ‫كبير يمكن إستعماله كمدرجات للمتفرجين للعروض المختلفة‬ ‫داخل المحل ‪ .‬يؤدي السلم إلى الدور األول ‪ ،‬حيث تعرض أحدث‬ ‫منتجات متنوعة األزياء والموضات والحلي والمنتجات اإللكترونية‬ ‫واألحذية الرياضية تتميز وسائل العرض في هذا الدور بأرفف عرض‬ ‫على شكل سوار دائري معدني يلتف حول أعمدة الحاملة ألسقف‬ ‫القاعة الوسطية ‪ .‬وبدون المساس بمكونات المنشأ القديم ركز‬ ‫التصميم المعماري على إبتكار قطع أثاث في إطار فراغات مرنة يمكن‬ ‫تغيرها حسب الحاجة من هذه القطع تلك التي تضم جلسات وسجاد‬ ‫أرضي صممت ألمكان عرض األحذية وهي تؤدي ثالث وظائف في آن‬ ‫واحد عرض األحذية عليها أو الجلوس أو المشي عليها لتجربة الحذاء‪.‬‬ ‫في الدور األخير هناك فترينات عرض معلقة يمكن اإلطاللة منها على‬ ‫أنحاء كبيرة من المحل ‪ .‬ساهم التصميم في إعادة معالم المبنى‬ ‫إلى حاالتها األصلية بعد أن كانت قد طمست تحت تغطيات مختلفة‬ ‫على مر السنين‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 37‬البناء‬

From the Architect Report: Located on Paris’s iconic Avenue des Champs-Élysées, the historic Art Deco bank building from 1932 is uncovered by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group to create a carefully curated retail laboratory for the world’s leading fashion, food and lifestyle brands — merging a new hybrid retail model that bonds with the surrounding city.

The 6,800m2 Galeries Lafayette concept store officially opened its doors to the public this spring, welcoming local and global shoppers into the restored Art Deco gem. The generous four-story environment is the largest store on the famed Parisian boulevard, and combines old world elegance with modern chic for hosting established and emerging brands, experiences and events.

The 120-year old heritage brand Galeries Lafayette Group brought BIG on board following an international architectural competition in 2016.BIG’s design pays tribute to the tactility and texture of the historical building. Throughout the store, visitors encounter precious materials and refined details from the past that are reinterpreted and deployed in a contemporary way. Walking around the lofty gallery-like space is an experience in moving through a composition of architectural elements that operate at the scale of furniture and defined in experiential shopping zones.

Shoppers are invited into the building through an inverse canopy on the street level. A glowing bridge ushers life into the heart of the building: a dramatic circular atrium covered by a monumental glass cupola that has been restored and uncovered for maximum daylight.

The entire store unfolds on the ground floor and creates a bright new urban living room for brand activations, fashion shows and other special events.

A grand staircase, which doubles as an auditorium during events, takes visitors to the mixed-use space on the first floor occupied by creative and emerging brands, as well as a denim lab, jewelry display, limited edition sneakers and tech products. A continuous golden ring of perforated metal wraps around the columns and creates a series of rooms and alcoves facing the atrium.

From the ground floor, visitors are immediately able to see the upper levels, enticing them to explore the different destinations and activities. The escalators are finished in warm metal and a ribbon of glass from the same material palette as the central atrium. Exploring the store and its different levels is a discovery of carefully curated environments where furniture is never only storage: interweaving carpets become dressing rooms, countertops are a sculptural stack of elements, and magic carpets for the shoe display double as furniture for shoppers to sit and try the footwear.

The upper levels of the store are further refined and continue the idea of furniture as artifact. The top floor features a series of suspended glass vitrines that resemble independent objects and can host a variety of experiences and activities visible from the lower levels.

Visitors can take a break from shopping and in the Oursin restaurant while enjoying views to the city or relax at the Citron coffee lounge, both designed by French fashion designer Simon Porte Jacquemus and operated by Caviar Kaspia. Meanwhile, a Parisian food court in the entire lower level, where groceries and eateries are divided into sweet and savory sections and where massive counters are arranged around welcoming shared tables

From the Architect Report: The new Sydney Fish Market is on a 3.6-hectare site at the head of Blackwattle Bay. The design capitalises on the opportunity to link the bay with the significant green space of Wentworth Park to the south, and the entire Sydney community. Preserving the authentic market feel is a key objective of this new building. The design focuses on maintaining a human scale with a true market atmosphere.

The new fish market preserves the intimacy and flexibility of open-air stalls united under a single sweeping canopy that characterises its iconic form. In other cities around the world, wholesale fish markets are closed to the public because of the risks posed by industrial machinery and processes. Maintaining the visual connection between the public areas and wholesale or wharf operations was a key strategy posed by 3XN. In the new building, the ground floor hosts all the functions traditionally associated with fish markets – the landing and loading of fish, the wholesale market, and the auction hall. All while amphitheatre staircases and the foreshore promenade wrap over the operational wharf, offering interwoven visual connections so visitors can understand what is going on inside, while still keeping them safe and separate. The amphitheatre staircases that lead from the plazas to the public market are a continuation of the surrounding landscape, establishing a foreshore promenade around Blackwattle Bay and opening a new public route along the water’s edge that connects the local neighbourhood to the CBD and Woolloomooloo beyond. The stairs also double as places to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

So rather than serving only a functional purpose, the stairs are converted into public spaces where people can enjoy their food and the view over the bay to the Anzac Bridge. The plazas at each ends of the fish market allow for informal gatherings and contemplative recreation – to create more connections between the public and the water - and house wetland flora to filter both stormwater and grey water from the building. These bio-filtration systems filter water and can provide a protective habitat for local birds while filtering the immediate site water run-off. The upper ground houses fresh seafood retailers, restaurants and cafés.

The design focuses on maintaining a human scale and creating a true market atmosphere – just like historic marketplaces or bazaars with a series of small stalls that are connected. The aim is to create an intimate market atmosphere. The building’s roof is an integral aspect of the fish market’s iconic design but also its overall sustainability strategy. Shaped to respond to the spatial demands of the program below, it also harvests rainwater for reuse, protects the retail spaces from the sun, and filters daylight for operations below. The unique form uses prevailing winds to extract hot air and protects the sellers from southerly winds.

The canopy, made from timber and aluminium is designed to be as permeable as possible, minimising the need for conditioned air, while also deflecting the direct sun. The new fish market maximises its water recycling potential by a combination of rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling, bio-filtration, and mechanical filtration and sterilisation for the use in daily operations like washdown. Biological and mechanical water quality systems are an integral part of the design of the new fish market, focused on conserving the valuable resource.

The waste systems employed in the new fish market aim to recycle industrial food waste. A comprehensive strategy for recyclables will be instituted and managed to optimise consumables and the fish market will reprocess materials used in packaging and operations.

From the Architect Report: In the last decades, the increasing presence of brands within department stores has eroded the store’s capacity to define its own identity. Department stores have become characterless landlords of a chaotic rabble of brands, canceling each other out through their constant declarations of uniqueness.

The Exhibition Hall, a new development within Kuwait City’s 360Mall, tries to create a new paradigm that will redefine the relation between department stores and brands by letting them participate in an explicit cultural concept.

OMA’s design for the Exhibition Hall alternates spaces assigned to brands with spaces curated by the department store hosting cultural exhibitions and events. The ambition is to promote emerging Arab talents in the field of fashion, art, and design. The department store will launch a curatorial strategy for a high turnover of commercial and cultural exhibitions and events, working as a social condenser as well as a place for bespoke fashion and design. The Exhibition Hall will be the first department store to be a public forum for the local and the Middle Eastern community, as well as a laboratory to experiment in cross contaminations between fashion brands and regional art and culture.

Developed within the existing premises of the 360Mall, located at the intersection of King Faisal Highway and the 6th Ring Road in Kuwait City, the Exhibition Hall will be developed on three floors with a total area of 9,400m2. A series of multifunctional partition walls divide each floor in linear galleries that will host exhibitions and events, multibrand open spaces, and mono-brand boutiques.

The exhibition/event spaces will be curated, in terms of architectural concept and curatorial strategy, by OMA for The Exhibition Hall in collaboration with the hosted brands and artists. In the multi-brand open spaces, all the brands will collectively participate to homogeneous architectural concepts, designed according to the curatorial strategy of the Exhibition Hall. In the galleries allocating mono-brand boutiques, the occupants will be free to develop their own retail concepts as a tailored contribution to the overall concept of the department store.

Like a traditional souk, the Exhibition Hall will generate a variety of public areas and intimate spaces; some galleries will have a more permanent character while others will be more temporary and could be periodically renovated according to the curatorial strategy.

The deep partition walls, integrating the existing vertical supporting structure, will become a multifunctional tool allocating product display, product storage, fitting rooms and MEP services. Visitors and costumers can meander through the galleries, experiencing a sequence of different conditions, thanks to a large number of openings in the partitions and also to the main walkway loops, directly connected to the existing 360Mall circulation. A new transparent façade will inundate interior spaces of the Exhibition Hall with natural light and at the same time will give brands valuable exterior exposure, quite unique in the Gulf region.

‫يقع هذا المركز التجاري في إحدى المدن الجديدة التابعة‬ ‫لشنجهاي الصين ‪ .‬حيث تم بناء مجموعة من األحياء في‬ ‫المنطقة تتكون من ‪ 3‬أجزاء ‪ :‬مركز حي وتجاري ‪ ،‬شارع‬ ‫تجاري وشقق فندقية ‪ ،‬يعتمد تصميمها على فكرة‬ ‫السوق التقليدي ذات المقياس اإلنساني بهدف جذب‬ ‫المتسوقين على ضفتي النهر وتوفير تجربة تسوق‬ ‫قريبة من البيئة الطبيعية الخضراء فالسوق ينقسم‬ ‫إلى قسمين يمر عبرهما النهر بينما قسم كل قسم‬ ‫إلى مباني صغيرة تتكون من دورين أو ثالث ‪ .‬يربط بين‬ ‫القسمين جسر يمر فوق النهر ويعتبر الجسر وسط‬ ‫المشروع السوق تعتمد على حركة المشاة مما إستدعى‬ ‫التصميم إلى اإلهتمام بأعمال تنسيق الموقع وتناغمه‬ ‫مع فكرة السوق التقليدية ذات الطرق المتعرجة ‪ .‬تؤي‬ ‫المباني الصغيرة على محالت تجارية موزعة على أدوار وتم‬ ‫إستخدام األلوان ومواد التغطية المتنوعة من الطوب‬ ‫أو الدهانات وألواح األلومنيوم وتم إستعمال مفردات‬ ‫وتفاصيل معمارية ‪ ،‬تميز المباني عن بعضها وتوفر لكل‬ ‫مبنى إستقاللية شخصية كما تساعد على إستمرارية‬ ‫التوسع المستقبلي حيث يسمح التنوع المعماري هذا في‬ ‫إعطاء حرية في إختيار التصميم في المستقبل بدون‬ ‫التقييد بالشكل الحالي ‪.‬‬

From the Architect Report: The project is located in Lingang New City, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. Seven residential neighborhoods have been built in the periphery successively, which are divided into three blocks, i.e., community commercial center, commercial street and serviced apartment. Designed based on the concept of “Market”, a series of space close to human scale are created to attract and gather traffic to both banks of the river, providing a unique shopping experience that is close to nature.

Market - We position the project as a modern community living center (CLC) with traditional market commercial space, expect to fully exploit the potential of the land and use the clustering of small commercial buildings to create a series of free spaces close to human scale, to perfectly reflect the unique ambience of “Market” and attract people from residential area to commercial area.

We have designed two “small markets” along the river. Starting from the two-bank-waterfront public life center, the commercial center with large volume is arranged on the northwest side, with high and low staggered stairs, green leisure plaza and river landscape, just like a “hill” of the market, serving as a friendly scale transition between the river and commercial center.

Eight stand-alone 1-3 storey shops are scattered on the northeast side. The 12-storey serviced apartment in an L shape is located at the northeast corner and encloses two winding commercial streets, three plazas and corners with freely arranged small commercial buildings, creating a free, changeable and friendly space experience.

Green Core - The two “small markets” along the river, combined by the landscape, are also special features of the project. The two triangular landscape plazas, connected by a bridge, become the spatial core of the whole plot. In the project, waterfront space is highly precious and active public activity space. Hence, we use the building waterfront as the main commercial showcase face.

The landscape system, centered on the pedestrian plazas on both banks enclosed by three plots, is the core node to create a “capillary green network” with the scattered space around the buildings according to local conditions. The walkway is also intentionally designed into irregular fold lines, for every step with a change of scene in the commercial retail space, green everywhere.

Ambience - The design of commercial flow fully reflects the core idea of “Market” in the project. What seem to be disorganized and irregular are carefully planned and designed. Every shop in the market enjoys excellent traffic flow and external image so that people can fully experience the nice spatial scale and commercial atmosphere rambling.

The market is made up of multiple small houses. Every house, every shop and every corner are different, including the height, shape, color and slope of the houses. Such primitive houses are randomly placed in groups by the riverside to create rich interior spaces, thus forming a variety of free streets, corners and small squares inside the market.

The exterior design features modern sloping roof that highlights stand-alone, small buildings to create a small-scale, natural and spontaneous feeling. The wall color is based on warm tone, and a variety of façade materials such as paint, brick, aluminum board, etc. are applied to form a wealth of material and texture changes, creating a sense of architectural combination from different ages for natural growth.

From the Architect Report: Investors wanted a simple, sunny and relaxing home, somehow reacting to the movement of the sun. They also valued our moving buildings and their changeability.

The starting point was a regular shape unbuilt site, located in the suburbs among the average single-family housing.

We placed a rectangular solid on it, and then turned the part belonging to the ground floor to get as much privacy as possible from the side of the road. In the ‘cut’ space was located a living room, roofed floor and in the perpendicular shape we located the SPA zone. Both spaces close the private part of the garden. The investors’ wish was a simple house with a flat roof, but the local plan imposed sloping roofs. Therefore, from the street side, the house has a gable roof, and from the garden side a flat roof, which ultimately created a non-standard, characteristic house shape.

Investors wanted a house reacting to the sun, which is why we used the motif of the quadrant - an old device used to determine the position of the stars. We have designed a terrace that reacts to the sun and follows it, thus residents sit in its shade and pleasant airing and - depending on the season - it regulates the amount of sunlight in the spaces it adjoins - gives the desired shadow in the summer and in winter allows for more sunlight inside. Furthermore, in good weather and also in the evening, when the house is open, it can be an extension of the daytime area or SPA. The drive system is fully automated, but manual control is also possible, depending on the needs. Movement of the terrace has been programmed to be in constant motion during the day, so that natural grass grows underneath.

Technical solutions and materials: The construction of the walls and ceilings was made in monolithic technology, additionally, the roof truss was built in wooden construction. As a wall finish, Sto plaster was used - the Milano acrylic filler in white and the roof cover is a white TPO Firestone membrane. The white color also dominates in the interior - white epoxy resin was used on the floors.

Windows in the living room area: While working on the detailed design, we have established cooperation with Skyframe, specializing in frameless sliding window systems. At that time, Skyframe did not have such a wide glazing set - the living room had two sets consisting of six sliding windows that parked in the wall niches and allow the living room to be opened completely from two sides.

However, they liked our project very much and treated it as a design challenge. After six months, they created a completely new prototype motorized sliding system, which they personally commissioned and programmed on site.

Moving terrace: Mechanisms by which the terrace of the building moves are designed and made by Comstal. This company collaborated us in the construction of Safe House, Konieczny’s Ark and National Museum in Szczecin Dialogue Centre „Przelomy”, which are also equipped with a various kind of a large scale, moving elements. The movement of the terrace and its speed is adapted to the sun’s wandering. The drive system is fully automated and has advanced safety sensors - if it encounters an obstacle, the terrace stops, making it completely safe to use. However, for funcional reasons, manual control is also possible. The terrace has been programmed to be in constant motion during the day, thanks to which natural grass grows underneath.

‫بإبراز البيئة الصحراوية بنطاقيها العالمي والمحلي من‬ ‫خالل زراعة ‪ 33‬نوعا من النباتات الصحراوية‪ ،‬منها ماهو‬ ‫مهدد باإلنقراض حيث تم إنقاذها من مواقع قابلة للتدمير‬ ‫كان من بينها نباتات يتراوح عمرها مابين ‪ 220‬و ‪ 300‬سنة‪.‬‬ ‫تعزز الحدائق النمط المعماري للمركز فهي تربط الفن‬ ‫بالمناظر الطبيعيةفيما بينها ‪ .‬تضم الحدائق مجموعة من‬ ‫النباتات األصلية من مختلف صحاري العالم حيث تكسب‬ ‫كل حديقة طبيعة مختلفة‪ .‬كمايتميز المركز بأروقة‬ ‫تستخدم كمساحات إجتماعية تحيط بالحدائق‪ ،‬وتربط‬ ‫صاالت العرض الفنية والمساحات العامة وتسمح بالتنقل‬ ‫بمرونة بين أجزاء المبنى ‪.‬‬

From the Architect Report: Designed as a 10,000-squaremetre, three-storey, multi-disciplinary space by UK-based Serie Architects, Jameel Arts Centre is the first non-governmental contemporary arts institution of its kind in the Gulf.

The kunsthalle-inspired complex includes more than 1,000 square metres of dedicated gallery space, plus a 300-squaremetre open-access research centre; events and screening spaces; a roof terrace; a restaurant; and a book and design shop. The Centre’s adaptable spaces reflect Art Jameel’s commitment to diverse programming across mediums and nurturing artist careers, as the galleries are deliberately designed in a variety of sizes and volumetric proportions to allow a flexible range of settings for exhibitions, site-specific installations and new commissions.

Awarded to Serie Architects in 2014 through an international invitational competition, the design of Jameel Arts Centre was initially conceived of as a family of forms bounded by a low colonnade. Inspiration for the building’s massing and spatiality draws from two regional architectural traditions on both intimate

and community-wide scales: the early Emirati Sha’abi houses that featured a series of rooms circling a courtyard, and the Madinat style of city planning characterised by an accumulation of houses with courtyards. Through a repeated juxtaposition of geometric forms and gardens, the Centre’s design fragments and tessellates the courtyard, continually layering a relationship between inside and outside, art & nature.

Expanding beyond the static white cube experience, the Centre’s design emphasises a connection with the surroundings, a perspective lived out in Art Jameel’s programming. Set on a sliver of land that reaches out into Dubai Creek, Jameel Arts Centre is at once connected to and separated from the iconic skyscraper-filled skyline of Dubai. Colonnades create a porous interface between intimate gallery spaces and the social life of the public waterfront promenade, inviting visitors to navigate through and along the space. The building’s surfaces incorporate an interplay between raw concrete and semireflective aluminium cladding, creating a subtle shimmer in response to the surrounding water and atmospheric changes, while its clustered form creates self-shading courtyards and allows for cross ventilation.

The series of courtyard desert gardens that punctuate the architecture ensure that alternating encounters of art and landscape remain integral to the experience of the building, encouraging moments of repose. Designed by renowned landscape architect Anouk Vogel, Jameel Arts Centre’s seven garden installations reflect specific local and global desert biomes, with 33 species represented. The gardens feature a collection of sculptural plants native to the world’s deserts, while striking vegetal textures, subtle mineral hues and unusual paving provide each garden with a unique character.

The distinct vegetation includes several endangered plants facing loss of habitat that have been individually saved from sites marked for destruction; the rare transplants include

a Sesame Bush that is between 220 and 300 years old.

The gardens also provide inspiration to a range of commissions and interventions debuting at the opening. On the roof terrace is the winning Art Jameel Commissions: Sculpture installation

by Kuwaiti artists Alia Farid and Aseel AlYaqoub, entitled Contrary Life: A Botanical Light Garden Devoted to Trees.

Shaikha Al Mazrou presents the first in an annual series of commissioned projects for the Artist’s Garden, and a sculptural work by Vikram Divecha will be installed within the garden spaces in the coming months.

The colonnade is an active social space, framing gardens and enlivening the waterfront promenade. The combination of garden and art continues outside to Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park, the first open-air art park located in the heart of the city, and a collaboration between Art Jameel and Dubai Holding, the master-developer of the wider Jaddaf Waterfront area.

Created by the award-winning, UAE based architecture studio ibda design, the park serves as a bridge between the public corniche circling Jaddaf Waterfront and Jameel Arts Centre.
