Albemarle Independent College is an award-winning privately owned sixth-form college, offering a broad A-Level and GCSE curriculum for students from public, state and private school backgrounds.
Why choose Ablemarle? The majority of students who come to Albemarle do so because of our reputation for excellent A-Level and GCSE results. This is true of students both on our full two-year programme, as well as those on the one-year intensive programme. Most students will progress on to a Russell Group (UK) or Ivy League (US) university, and all students benefit from our advice on choice of degree course and career path. Students are taught in small groups, concentrating on the skills needed to pass examinations and to be successful at university. All teachers at Albemarle are subject specialists and most have experience as examiners.

They are particularly successful with young people: they are able to motivate and communicate with them in ways which they understand. Barriers are quickly broken down, enhancing the learning process.
How do we get the best out of our students? Students benefit from individual tutorials outside of classes - a key element of our successful A-Level and GCSE programmes, and at Albemarle each student has a Curriculum Manager who provides advice on study skills, subject choices and careers, and who also monitors the progress of their students.
We expect full commitment from our students and as such we have strict rules on attendance and timely submission of assignments. Parents are able to monitor progress through monthly reports, easily accessible using our online Parent’s Portal. Parents’ Evenings are held during the Autumn and Spring terms. We encourage our students every step of the way and we help them to build confidence through examination success. We see the learning process as a successful partnership between students, teachers and parents.
“At Albemarle the well-being of our students is just as important as their academic progress”. Ainsley Macphee Admissions Manager

Teaching, Assessment and Reporting Students at Albemarle benefit from the small class sizes, on average five students in each class. Tuition is very much centred on the students who are encouraged to participate fully and, most importantly, to think for themselves.

Our teachers are all highly qualified specialists in their subject area. They use a mixture of motivation, encouragement and confidence building to get the best out of students. Teachers focus on examination techniques and make extensive use of past examination questions. Lessons are timetabled in 50 minute sessions between 9.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. The college remains open daily until 6.30pm on weekdays and is also open on Saturdays, for private study and individual tutorials. Students are provided with a full set of notes in each subject, with homework being assigned at the end of each lesson. Students must complete all assignments on time and we monitor all coursework carefully to ensure that students meet their deadlines.
Mock examinations are held once a month in each subject, and the results are viewable along with other performance related data in monthly reports in the Parents’ Portal. Students who underperform in mocks are timetabled into supervised study sessions and given additional help outside of classes by their teachers. They are also coached in study skills and exam techniques, and given advice by their Personal Tutor as to how best improve their performance. Personal Tutors maintain regular contact with parents and guardians, throughout the year on an informal basis.
Chris Mason Finance & Office Manager
Parents’ Evenings are held in the Autumn and Spring terms, giving parents and guardians the opportunity to meet with teachers and the Principals. During half-term weeks students are provided with revision packs, but they can also come into the college for extra help if needed. The college also provides dedicated courses to help students with essaywriting and numeracy.

Albemarle A-level Prog ramme
The Two-year A-level Programme Students on this programme generally take 3 or 4 AS-level courses in their first year with the option to complete an EPQ, followed by 3 A-level subjects in their second year.
Progress is closely monitored by Personal Tutors and Curriculum Managers
All students in their first year (AS-level) have 5 lessons per week per subject and additional weekly University & Life Skills (ULS) sessions. Students also have the option to complete the Extended Project Qualification which is taught in separate sessions. In the second year of A-levels, students have 6 lessons per week for each subject.
During the Spring half-term all Lower Sixth students are invited to take part in the college cultural trip to a European city of interest. This is an immensely popular and enjoyable experience for students. Recent destinations have included Florence & Venice, Athens, Seville & Granada, Rome, Istanbul and Lisbon.
Progress is closely monitored by Personal Tutors and Curriculum Managers, and students greatly benefit from individually tailored help outside of lessons when needed.
Teachers make the most of the college’s fantastic location in the heart of London and frequently arrange visits for students to nearby places such as the Wallace Collection, V&A, Natural History and Science Museums, Institut Français, as well as open lectures at Imperial, UCL, LSE and the Royal Society of Science.
A wide range of weekly sporting activities is provided by the college as well as enrichment activities. Popular sports played include football, basketball, netball, badminton and tennis; provision is also made for students who wish to do yoga, aerobics, martial arts and gym sessions.

ULS & EPQ Programmes
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Designed to develop skills in decision making, problem solving, planning, research and evaluation, the EPQ prepares students for both university and employment. It also provides a competitive edge with UCAS applications and helps to build confidence and improve time management skills.
Our unique University & Life Skills (ULS) programme consists of weekly lessons helping students to develop soft skills and build confidence, and also includes seminars led by visiting professionals. Students have the opportunity to complete an EPQ, taught in separate sessions.
All students in their AS-level year have weekly ULS lessons which hone their skills in several areas including presentations, teamworking and project management. We also provide help in planning work experience placements and taster courses at universities. Guest speakers from a wide range of professions and university programmes are invited to the college to speak to students.
A key part of the ULS programme focuses on preparation for university, including advice on choice of degree course and university, and compiling the personal statement. Students also have the opportunity to take part in the college’s university tour at the end of the lower sixth year.
The EPQ is graded A* - E, with an A* grade equating to 28 UCAS points.

– Writing a dissertation, investigation or report – Creating an artefact or design – Organising an event – Staging a performance of some kind. Students are assessed by their EPQ teachers across a range of skills which are the same regardless of the type of project undertaken.
“My EPQ led to a lower offer from AAB to ABB from Southampton and Sheffield universities.” Matthew Collins, Student
We welcome the introduction of EPQ and would encourage students to take one as it helps them to develop independent study and research skills and ease the transition from school/college to higher education. Cambridge University Admissions

Albemarle One-year A-level Prog ramme
Strategic planning is crucial
The One-year A-level Programme Most students joining us for the one-year A-level programme will have completed their AS-level year at another school or college. However, it is possible in some subjects for students to opt for the intensive one-year A-level programme, having not previously studied the subject before.
“Students joining us for the Upper Sixth are given additional individual help outside of lessons to address any shortcomings they may have from their previous school learning.” James Meadows Lead Teacher, History
Some students will have completed the full A-level programme and are seeking to resit one or more A-levels to improve their grades. These resit students benefit greatly from the individually tailored help they receive outside of the classroom from teachers, including direction on improving exam technique and study skills.
Students also receive help from their Personal Tutors with work experience placements and participating in university taster courses. Through our extensive alumni network they are also able to connect with ex-students who may be on the same degree course they wish to pursue, thereby gaining an invaluable insight into that course.
Their Personal Tutor will monitor their progress and help them to achieve their academic goals. Curriculum Managers meet with students on an individual basis to offer advice on all aspects of the UCAS admissions process, including writing their personal statement and preparing for interviews. UCAS applications are finalised as soon as possible in the Autumn term, giving students the best possible chance of receiving offers from their first choice university.
In the past academic year, students on our one-year programme have achieved places at many of the top UK universities including Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Warwick, Edinburgh, Bristol and Durham.

The GCSE Programme The GCSE programme at Albemarle is a one-year intensive programme covering Key Stage 4 of the national curriculum and most students will take 6 to 8 subjects in the year.
Our GCSE students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, attracted by our reputation for achieving excellent examination results and the very individual support and attention they will receive at Albemarle.
‘‘GCSE students benefit from individually tailored programmes with support from teachers outside of classes.’’ Olivia Mariner Head of GCSE
Small classes... focusing on the individual
Our GCSE programme is highly structured and for most students lessons take place between 9.00am and 4.00pm every day. There are 3 lessons per subject per week and supervised study sessions are also timetabled during which students are able to complete homework or coursework. The core subjects for most GCSE students include English, Mathematics and Science subjects. Other popular subjects are Foreign languages, Art, Photography, History and Geography. A full list of GCSE subjects on offer at Albemarle can be found on page 36. The Head of GCSE acts as Personal Tutor to all GCSE students, closely monitoring their progress and maintaining regular contact with parents or guardians. Towards the end of the academic year GCSE students may begin to consider A-level choices and they are given advice and guidance throughout the decision-making
process. They also have the opportunity to take part in A-level taster sessions to explore their choices. Trips and visits to galleries, museums and places of interest are an integral part of the GCSE programme. Our excellent central London location offers us the opportunity to make the most of the fantastic places available to young people. Often these visits are subject related, such as visits to the Globe theatre for English Literature GCSE. GCSE students are also encouraged to take part in the college’s wideranging extra-curricular and sports programmes, although sport is not compulsory. Our main objectives are to empower students to obtain the best possible GCSE grades through expert tuition in an environment that encourages hard work, independence of thought and examination success, and to build the right foundation for students to progress on to A-level study.

Albemarle Careers Guidance
Preparing for Life At Albemarle our two primary objectives are to empower students to achieve exam success by encouraging hard work and independence of thought, and to provide students with a foundation on which to build; encompassing careers guidance, work experience and life-skills coaching.
Preparation for the Next Step
Uni tour Leeds University
Careers Guidance Each student joining the college has an initial consultation with their Curriculum Manager to establish goals and objectives, explore career options and to ensure that the correct selection of A-levels and/or GCSEs is made. This is the first stage in a careers guidance programme tailored to suit the individual student.
All our A-level students leave Albemarle to go on to study at a reputable university, generally in the UK and sometimes in the USA. We have a range of specialist programmes including work experience, which help to prepare students for university and beyond. Many students find choosing the right degree course a daunting task so we equip them with the tools they need to make the right choice. We arrange university tours accompanied by Albemarle teachers and through our extensive alumni network, students are
able to gain a real insight into many different degree courses at a wide range of universities. All of our senior teachers have close connections with top universities and are available to give advice to students and provide mentoring. The Principals themselves take an active role in career planning and arranging work experience, essential to setting students on the right path to success. When students leave Albemarle, they remain very much a part of our extended family and can call on us at any time for advice and support.
Personal Tutors All students are assigned a Personal Tutor to monitor their progress and provide help and advice on academic and pastoral matters. Albemarle’s careers guidance programme has been strengthened through partnership with a number of visiting professionals and our network of university contacts from a variety of fields.

They are positively encouraged to develop the interpersonal skills so crucial in today’s working environment, often lost on those young people who interact almost solely through social media.
For some degree courses such as Medicine, Law, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine, work experience is essential. However, we believe that work experience helps all students to develop valuable skills, as well as providing an insight into their chosen career path.
Students are also able to benefit from advice given to them by their Curriculum Manager.
Students are taught how to compile a CV, write a covering letter and how to prepare for job interviews.

Our Economics & Management Programme is designed for students wishing to study Business, Economics, Management, PPE or related degree courses
Students studying A-level Art & Design and/or Photography benefit from the help and support from teachers to build excellent portfolios essential to gain entry to degree courses including Architecture, Fine Art, Fashion and Graphic design. All A-level Art and Photography students have to produce a Personal Study, the subject of which is geared towards their chosen degree course area. Teachers also have a great deal of input in helping students to build and develop their individual portfolios, both in-book and digital versions. These portfolios are crucial for admission to most art-related degree courses.

Sport & Leisure Activities Students benefit from a wide range of sports and leisure activities ranging from football to rock-climbing, most of which take place at a local sports centre close to the college in Marylebone. Popular sporting activities include football, tennis, volleyball, basketball, netball, badminton, as well as martial arts, dance aerobics and yoga. The college’s student council is instrumental in providing suggestions for sporting activities; these are arranged outside of the weekly main sporting afternoon and include horse-riding, golf and athletics. “Albemarle has been the best experience in my life so far. The teaching staff were the key to my successful university placement at LSE. I will never forget my time at Albemarle. It combines a great location, the most talented staff and a great atmosphere which I will miss a lot. You can trust that at Albemarle the teachers focus on your success and sacrifice their time to help you master your subjects. And you will also have lots of fun as the team is just amazing! ”
“I completed my GCSEs at Albemarle before starting on my A-levels there. Firstly what amazed me was how good the teaching was across all of my subjects - the Sciences, Maths and French, and how approachable teachers were - always at hand to give me help and support, particularly outside of lessons. During my first year, the Life Skills programme really helped to boost my confidence and develop skills. My Personal Tutor James really supported me and helped me to secure a place at one of the world’s top universities. I would certainly recommend Albemarle as a great place to study A-levels.”
“Having studied abroad and in London before joining Albemarle I can honestly say the teaching at Albemarle is the best I have ever had. I believe that the teachers really care about students and help them constantly. I also liked the fact that the college had a nice mixture of local and international students so that I was able to learn more about British culture before heading off to university. I do miss Albemarle very much, even though I enjoy studying at King’s.”
“My two years at Albemarle went so quickly but they were probably the best years of my school life. The advice and support I got from my teachers and my Curriculum Manager, James, helped me to great success in A-levels and my ultimate goal - a place at Oxford University.”
“Having joined Albemarle partway through my AS year I was concerned that I would not be able to catch up with my peers. However, the teachers were amazing in helping me get up to speed and I achieved top grades in my AS-levels in my first year. The guidance and help I got were essential in helping me to secure a place at my first choice university and I am very glad that I studied at Albemarle.”
“An amazing school. Lessons here feel more like an indulgence in enjoyable discussions, making your path to university a lot easier than you might have expected. Albemarle has all the stuff that could make you say ‘that was one of the best experiences of my life’! I’ve achieved the grades I wanted and will now be going to university in London, which means that I’ll still be close to the place that I’m sure I will miss for a long time.”

Julian Worricker
Charles has held many senior posts in schools and colleges over the course of his career, including the Headship of Cranbrook College where he was also Chair of the London division of the Independent Schools Association and Deputy Head of Ibstock Place School. For a period Charles was also Head of the Royal Ballet School in Roehampton, and to this day he is an avid supporter of the performing arts. He is also a keen golfer and cricketer, and now a marathon runner in support of children’s charities such as Whizz-Kidz. For ten years Charles also served as a magistrate in Feltham and Highbury. His wealth of experience makes him ideally suited to his current position as our Chair of Governors.
Hina is a senior employment lawyer, author and trainer with over 20 years’ experience. She has headed up employment teams at a number of City firms, including DLA Piper, Dentons and Pinsent Mason, and was managing partner of her own City of London law firm – Partners Employment Lawyers for 11 years – now part of Excello Law.
Julian is an award-winning journalist and broadcaster with nearly thirty years’ on-air experience, both in radio and television. He currently presents ‘Weekend’ on the BBC World Service, appears regularly on the BBC News Channel, and on BBC Radio programmes including ‘Any Answers’, ‘Last Word’ and ‘Pick of the Week’. Away from the microphone he does regular training work within the BBC, focusing on presentation and interviewing. Amidst all this apparently frantic activity he never loses sight of the fact that one of the best things he did during his adult life was to jack in work for six months to go travelling round the world.
