What Our Students Say Amna Ali
A-level Grades: Math A* Biology A Chemistry A
“As someone who previously had only attended state schools,
Albemarle made it very clear the advantages of a college with a solid support system. The small teaching groups allowed a more personalised experience. Regular tutor meetings and exams ensured your progress was frequently monitored. Albemarle provides a plethora of guidance beyond your time there and, with the assistance of the teachers, I managed to secure a place at a top institute. Amna is currently in her third year at Kings College, London Medical School.
”
Karishma Patel
A-level Grades: Biology A, Chemistry A, English Literature A
“When I joined Albemarle I was initially apprehensive as I didn’t know if I
could achieve the grades and university place that I wanted. Through dedicated teaching, encouragement and guidance from my Personal Tutor I started to believe it was possible. The friendly atmosphere and helpful staff and teachers made learning easy and enjoyable. I achieved the grades I needed but without the guidance and advice on study technique I wouldn’t have been successful in the BMAT exam nor gained my place at Imperial. Karishma studied medicine at Imperial College and completed her post graduate studies at the University of London.
”
Dmitry Chernov
A-level Grades: Biology A*, Physics A*, Chemistry A, Maths A, French A
“What amazed me at Albemarle was how good the teaching was across
all of my subjects and how approachable the teachers were - always at hand to give help and support, particularly outside of lessons. During my first year, the Life Skills programme really helped to boost my confidence and develop skills. My Personal Tutor, James really supported me and helped me to secure a place at one of the world’s top universities. I would certainly recommend Albemarle as a great place to study A-levels. Dmitry completed his medical degree Imperial College, London and is now in post graduate training.
”
Niamh Doherty
A-level Grades: Chemistry A, Maths A, Biology A
“Before coming to Albemarle I was on the verge of giving up on my
dream of become a dentist. The tutors at Albemarle were great and as I knew nothing about aptitude tests before attending this course, they helped me to feel much more confident and to put my mind at ease. Niamh completed her degree in Dentistry at the University of Bristol and is now a fully qualified dentist.

The Medical Sciences Programme The Medical Sciences Programme at Albemarle is a unique programme designed for students wishing to pursue Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry and other medical science courses at university. The key feature of this extracurricular programme is a series of sessions (mainly in the autumn term of the second year) in which students are introduced to and discuss hot topics of current medical interest. Professionals from the medical and biosciences fields are also invited to give talks to students and provide mentoring for those wishing to enter the medical professions, work in the pharmaceutical industry, other areas of applied Bioscience or academic research. We also forge links with university admissions officers to get the clearest insight into what they look for in applications. Work experience is also a key feature of this programme, and through our network of professional contacts we help to secure work experience placements for students in a variety of institutions, both in the UK and abroad.
Other features of the programme:
● Special courses are run to provide tutoring on the BMAT and UCAT tests for students wishing to apply for medicine and dentistry courses; ● One-to-one tutorials to support and advise on writing personal statements for the UCAS form. ● Considerations and preparation for interview (including practice – either simulating the multiple mini-interview or traditional panel interview format) ● Advice on applying for courses outside the UK (e.g. American universities or medical schools in Europe).

BMAT Preparation Course
In early September before A-level teaching commences those students applying to one or more of the above medical schools, usually in addition to preparing for UCAT, participate in a BMAT preparation course. The course covers the full range of aptitudes and skills required to take the test, as well as the Key Stage 4 Core Science and Higher Mathematics needed for the scientific knowledge and applications part of the test. Through syllabus revision and intensive question practice, students build confidence and learn valuable test-taking skills. Students are also given revision packs to take home for further practice. There are usually two exam sittings of BMAT for entrance to UK universities. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BMAT – September will not go ahead in 2021. This leaves 3rd November as the only date that the test can be taken.

The BMAT Test
The BMAT is a two hour, pen-and-paper test divided into three sections. It does not require a lot of extra study as it is a test of skills and knowledge that learners are expected to have already. The BMAT is divided into three sections:
Section 1: Thinking Skills
What does it test? Questions Timing
Generic skills in problem-solving and critical thinking. 32 multiple choice. 60 minutes.
Section 2: Scientific Knowledge and Applications
What does it test? Questions Timing
The ability to apply scientific knowledge from school science and maths up to and including the level of National Curriculum Key Stage 4. 27 questions, multiple choice or short answer. 30 minutes.
Section 3: Writing Task
What does it test? Questions Timing
The ability to select, develop and organise ideas, and to communicate them in writing, concisely and effectively. One essay question from a choice of three questions. 30 minutes.
7
How do universities use BMAT results? University of Cambridge
some who graded fantastically on their GCSEs since this can counterbalance a subpar BMAT score. Oxford University places a higher weight on Section 1 & 2, 40% each, and 20% on Section 3; the tougher essay section.
Cambridge generally interview roughly 90% of candidates, so the BMAT score isn’t necessarily a deciding factor of getting to the interview stage. The BMAT score is, however, taken into consideration for final acceptance, along with other factors such as GCSE attainment and interview performance. The weight of each factor varies for each college so asking the admissions office or contacts at the university is advisable.
Imperial College London
Imperial College differs from other universities in that it requires a candidate to hit a minimum score on every section. If a minimum threshold is not hit in Section 1, 2 or 3, then you will not secure an interview. This means consistency and ability across every section is equally important. The cut-off scores differ each year, but 2017 saw 4.5, 4.6 and 2.5 for Section 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
University of Oxford
Oxford differs greatly from Cambridge. Oxford University tend to interview just 30% of candidates and place a 50/50 weight on GCSEs and BMAT. This can be a relief for
8
University College London
those in the bottom 20% receiving the lowest mark available. Overall BMAT weighting is equivalent to 50% of the personal statement weighting and 15% of the academic scoring weighting.
UCL is similar to Cambridge in its usage of the BMAT score. UCL place a fair weight on each part of the application process e.g. personal statement, GCSE grades and predicted A-level grades. UCL have stated that “Candidates with scores that are below the average for their cohort are less likely to be successful”, meaning if you don’t do so well on your BMAT test then you are not necessarily out of the running, provided the rest of your application was stellar.
Lancaster University
The overall BMAT score for each applicant is calculated by adding the total score for sections 1, 2 and 3 (Maximum Score – 23). The Section 3 Quality of English score is not taken into consideration when assessing applicants.
Keele University
Only international students hoping to study Medicine at Keele University are required to take the BMAT examination, and the results are used alongside one’s academic performance, personal statement and references in assessing candidates’ suitability. UK Medicine applicants are required to take the UCAT examination.
Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS)
BSMS operates a strict cut-off point in considering an applicant’s suitability for interview. Applicants can score a maximum of 28 points, with Section 3 being allocated slightly more weighting than Sections 1 and 2.
University of Leeds
University of Manchester
The University of Leeds does not operate a strict BMAT cut-off. They use a total score calculated from the sum of the scores in Sections 1, 2 and 3, with Section 3 given half the weighting of the first two sections. The Section 3 score is also taken into consideration during the interview stage of the selection process. Those in the top 20% of scores will receive the full mark available for this part of the application process, with
Applicants may offer BMAT in lieu of Manchester’s standard entry requirements if they are classed as “Overseas” for tuition fees purposes, and have both studied and have, or will achieve, a U.S. High School Diploma (but do not have Scholastic Aptitude Test II or Advanced Placement qualifications which would satisfy their standard entry requirements).

UCAT Preparation Course
In early September, before A-level teaching commences, Albemarle students applying for medicine and dentistry participate in a course to help them prepare for the UCAT test. Most students taking the UCAT course will be new to aptitude tests and so they are taught strategies to help them tackle the test, as well as given a thorough explanation as to the structure and content of each test. They then focus on practising questions, identifying weaknesses and study techniques. Students are also given revision packs to take home for further practice. Students may sit the UCAT at a Pearson VUE Test Centre. Students will know their results immediately after the test. (See UCAT website for full details: https://www.ucat.ac.uk/ucat/ucat-2020)

Admission to Medicine and Dentistry in the UK Training doctors and dentists is costly for universities so the number of places on courses are limited. Couple that with the perennial popularity of these career paths, these degree courses are amongst the most competitive and oversubscribed. For this reason, and to ensure that each candidate is seriously committed and has the correct aptitude for what is ultimately a highly stressful training course and career, medical degree programmes have more stringent application requirements than other degree courses. These include top predicted or achieved A-level grades, interviews, aptitude tests and the completion of appropriate work experience.
Admission Tests
Schools of Medicine and Dentistry typically require UCAT, and cut offs (if used) are around 2400-2600 with some not interviewing those with situational judgement scores of 4. The few universities not requiring UCAT require BMAT (Only Leeds for Dentistry – see pages 6-7 for full BMAT usage). At present only the University of Central Lancashire and the University of Buckingham (private) require neither UCAT nor BMAT for admission for medicine.
12
Qualifications
Many medical and dentistry schools have a GCSE requirement; typically requiring 6-7 in English and/or Maths. Offers to A-level students from most universities typically stipulate a minimum AAA, with some of the most prestigious requiring an A* in one or more subjects. For medical degrees, a growing number of universities have initiatives to promote wider participation by offering places to students attaining lower A-level grades that come from disadvantaged backgrounds. This is typically referred to as Gateway to Medicine and usually involves an additional initial year of study equivalent to a foundation year. University of Central Lancashire offers a similar 6 year course with a foundation year, but this is only open to international students.
Interviews
All medical and dentistry schools conduct interviews. These are used mainly to assess students’ non-academic skills, often with a focus on communication skills and exploring candidates’ facility for empathy and their ability to correctly apply the principles of medical ethics. Most universities have moved away from the traditional panel interview, favouring a format where students move between stations to undertake a broader range of tasks and are assessed by more interviewers. This is commonly referred to as Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI). It is seen as fairer and less stressful for students and an ever-increasing number of universities are adopting it.
Work Experience
Medical and dentistry schools expect to see evidence in personal statements that students have used their initiative to seek out appropriate work experience opportunities. This does not necessarily have to be in a clinical setting, but the student should demonstrate an appreciation for skills they may acquire that would be relevant and useful, such as teamwork or leadership. When writing about work experience it can often be a good opportunity to demonstrate reflectiveness – thinking about what you have learned and how the experience may have contributed to your personal development.

Admission to Veterinary Medicine in the UK Competition for places to study Veterinary medicine is high for similar reasons outlined for medicine and dentistry, but further compounded by the limited number of universities that offer the course; currently only 9. Therefore, the entry requirements are also quite stringent and numerous. Generally, the requirements are similar; requirement for interview, minimum GCSE and high A-level grades (A*AA -AAB). The main difference being that veterinary medicine does not require the UCAT or BMAT. However, there is generally an increased focus on expecting applicants to demonstrate the extent and variety of work experience completed. In many cases this involves submitting a detailed account in addition to the personal statement.

Studying Medicine & Dentistry in Europe Albemarle has a longstanding relationship with a number of prestigious Medical and Dental Schools throughout Europe and we have several alumni who have opted to pursue these professional degree courses at European universities – including Charles University in Prague, Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia, Spain, Iuliu Hatieganu University in Cluj, Romania amongst others. Albemarle does not act as an agent for any of these universities so all of our students can rest assured that they will receive free and impartial advice from us as to the benefits, costs and difficulties of studying in Europe. Having seen alumni graduate and return to the UK to practice Medicine and Dentistry we definitely believe that this is a viable alternative for certain students.

Other Clinical and Non-Clinical Medical Careers Other Clinical Careers
Of course, the delivery of medical care involves an interdisciplinary team of other medically trained professions, including; nurses (of many types), midwives, physiotherapists, paramedics, occupational health therapists and so on. These days, most of these career paths also require a specialised first degree and sometimes a postgraduate degree too. For example, to become a clinical psychologist requires a BSc in psychology and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. For more details see the relevant job profiles at the Prospects website: https://www.prospects.ac.uk
Optometry
In the UK there are around 15 universities currently running approved degree courses in optometry which would qualify you to work as an optician/optometrist. Entry requirements vary between universities, but you'll typically need a minimum of AAB at A-level with at least two science subjects. Locally, City, University of London offers ABB and Hertfordshire AABAAA. There is no requirement for UCAT or BMAT Degree courses usually last three years full time (four years in Scotland), although some providers offer an integrated four-year Master of Optometry, which incorporates the preregistration period. Students who successfully complete this course are fully qualified and able to register as Optometrists with the General Optical Council.
Pharmacy
A familiar and popular career path students choose to follow is to become a Community Pharmacist, which harnesses interests students may have in Chemistry, Biology and medicine, but also business and the possibility of a career in the pharmaceutical industry. To work as a Pharmacist in the UK you need to complete an MPharm degree. MPharm degrees take four years to complete. Some universities, however, offer a five-year integrated MPharm degree, which incorporates the year of pre-registration training. There are more than 30 universities in the UK that offer MPharm courses. See the full list on UCAS or at the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) website: https://www.pharmacyregulation.org
Universities offering MPharm courses in and around London include;
● University College London
● University of Hertfordshire (Hatfield)
● King's College, University of London
● Kingston University London
● University of Reading
● University of Sussex
● Medway School of Pharmacy, Universities of Greenwich and Kent
24
A-level grade requirements for Pharmacy range from AAB, for Kings and UCL to ABB for Reading /BBB for Hertfordshire. Typically, this must include Chemistry and at least one subject from Biology, Mathematics or Physics. Note: Three-year bachelor degrees in Pharmacology or Pharmaceutical science, will allow you to follow a research career but not qualify you to work as a Pharmacist.
Biomedical Science
Students that are passionate about medicine but unsure whether they want to pursue a clinical career often chose to do a BSc in Biomedical Science. This allows them to keep their options open. The degree can allow students to enter one of the professions below or apply for graduate entry into medical school. This may seem like a long route to becoming a doctor but has often proven to be more appropriate for students who develop the confidence and other qualities medicine demands at a slightly later stage. There are currently over 90 universities offering over 300 biomedical sciences courses. The top universities will require A-level Biology and Chemistry and make offers conditional of AAA – AAB.
Main Careers open to graduates of Biomedical Science:
Biomedical or Clinical Scientist
Based within a lab typically, clinical scientists have the option of working in 4 different fields: biochemistry, genomics, haematology and immunology. For each department, the job role varies, but in general you’ll examine patient samples relative to your field to uncover any abnormalities, traces of disease or viruses, or other health disorders. You’ll also work closely with other healthcare professionals, to provide knowledge to patients regarding the diagnosis and treatment of their illnesses.
Forensic Scientist
Forensic scientists examine a crime scene, and collect any corresponding evidence. This includes: Blood and other bodily fluids. A lot of the examination and testing of samples is biology-based, including DNA analysis and toxicology testing for substances in blood and urine etc. After testing, you may be called to present your evidence in a court of law, in order help prosecute or defend the accused.
25
Medicinal Chemist
A medicinal chemist is an R&D (Research and Development) role, working daily on the discovery of new drugs that can be used to treat patients of illnesses ranging from hay fever to cancer.
Microbiologist
Microbiologists study the biology of microorganisms. They work mainly in their laboratories and offices, testing and analysing samples and writing reports on their findings. Their work can cover specialisms such as healthcare and pharmaceutical, agriculture and food safety, manufacturing, and environmental industries.
Toxicologist
Toxicologists work to identify and assess the impact of toxins on human and animal health, and the wider environment. From exposing dangerous substances in our food and water systems and testing that new medicines are safe for human consumption, to analysing the long-term effects of radiation.
