Data Science: Virtual Camp!

AGES 11-15

How do you make the correct decisions based on data? Data Science is the art of understanding how to interpret large data sets and make the right inferences. With this camp, you will learn to interpret data using Panda, MatPlotLib and Seaborn libraries in Python, as well as learn to visualize data using bar charts, heatmaps, and scatter plots to make inferences. You will then learn how to curate your data set to amplify your understanding of the data. You will be using numerous useful datasets, like FIFA rankings and Spotify Daily Streams to find global leaders, Computer Game Ratings to decide the next game design, and specific diseases to understand how classification and AI can help find a cure.

Minecraft Coding and Design Studio

AGES 6-12

Minecraft isn't just the world's most popular game; it's also an excellent tool for teaching a wide array of subjects. At Athena, we've developed a project-based approach to a variety of important topics using Minecraft Educational; our course will cover personalized game design, animation, and storytelling, programming in Python and Javascript, architecture and design, the fundamentals of electrical circuitry using Minecraft's patented Redstone circuit system, logic gates, multi-system mechanisms, modding and more!

Mobile App Development: Virtual Camp!

AGES 9-13

Want to learn how to create your own mobile apps from the comfort of your home? Learn the basics of programming through mobile app development with Code for Fun using the MIT App Inventor! Have fun creating and sharing apps with your friends. During this course you will learn how to create user interfaces, develop simple games for android devices, utilize device sensors, and create your own virtual assistant like Siri or Alexa. Run the apps you create on your Android tablet/phone or iPad/iPhone. (A physical device is strongly preferred as many of the sensors we will be using are not present in the emulator).

Bring your game ideas to life in Roblox! We'll guide you through the lifecycle of game development; you'll sketch out an idea, design your game, and complete a finished product! You'll use the Lua programming language to create in Roblox's 3D design studio while mastering realworld programming concepts. Whether you're completely new to coding or a master, Roblox's game design engine offers some incredibly fun challenges. We offer a unique and collaborative approach to programming and game design that will allow kids to develop their creativity while fostering an interest in practical skills.

Begin your day by exploring gentle, therapeutic, and graceful movements. Staying connected to our breath, we become present with every moment and every sensation in the body. In this class, we will learn the traditional Yogic asanas (postures) in the style of Hatha Yoga to increase the flexibility and endurance of the body

The class starts with exercises lying on the floor called “floor barre” for core strengthening, flexibility, extension and to warm up the body in preparation for basic ballet exercises at the barre to classical music. Read & Write

Memoir Writing

AGES 50–OLDER

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a low-pressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed.

Annual Compost Giveaway

May 6, 2023

Each spring, the City’s Waste Hauler, Waste Management of Alameda County (WMAC), sponsors a Compost Giveaway event in the City of Albany.

During the event, Albany residents can pick up free, bagged compost that is locally made using yard trimmings and food scraps picked up from residential curbside green carts.

Citywide Garage Sale

May 13, 2023

The Citywide Garage Sale is a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials. Items bought and sold at garage sales help reduce the amount of items that may otherwise be sent to the landfill.

People from across the City host garage sales in front of their homes as a way to reduce the community’s environmental impact by giving otherwise thrown away items a second life (and make a little extra cash!). The City of Albany partners with the City of El Cerrito to advertise for the Citywide Garage Sale.
