FROM THE DIRECTOR Life is an endless series of transitions. Most are seamless, but some are immediately impactful.

They bring an entirely new path, and require you to take a deep breath, rethink and commit.

That 2017 storm also gave us an opportunity to rethink the future of the Albany Museum of Art. The Board of Trustees has decided that moving the AMA to the downtown district, which is undergoing a renaissance, is the best avenue for growth. That project, unfortunately, has had many starts and stops. I am still hopeful that this bold move will happen, enabling the AMA to reach more of the community and the region.

That is this transition I am experiencing as I leave the Albany Museum of Art.

Of course, our presence downtown already is being felt with the creation of AMA ChalkFest, joining our February Art Ball and Supper Series as our major fundraisers. AMA ChalkFest last September brought an estimated 3,000 people to the 100 block of Pine Avenue, where we had nearly a dozen professional chalk artists, many amateur chalk artists, 15 craft beer tents, children’s chalk art activities, live music, food trucks and specialty vendors.

This year it is set for Oct 5, and it will be even bigger with double the number of professional chalk artists.

You often hear people say that leaving a business or organization is not an easy decision to make. It’s not. Still, you get a sense of when the time is right. Over the past five years, we’ve righted the ship. We’re in a good position fiscally, our membership base is strong, and we have exhibitions, fundraisers and programming planned for the next two years. The Trustees have a direction planned for the museum that will enable it to thrive.

It’s remarkable that we, as an organization, have been able to accomplish all this during a period that included three unprecedented natural disasters. I never imagined when I began my second tenure as executive director that our museum would sustain catastrophic damage from the Jan 2, 2017 storm. Just as our community and region was pulling itself up from the rubble of those hurricane-speed winds, a powerful tornado carved a 70mile path three weeks later.

Yet, these worst of times brought out the best in us. Not one precious piece of art was lost to the storms. All of our lives were disrupted, but we rallied in so many ways, not the least of which was reopening our museum in less than nine months to a full schedule of exhibitions and programming. I wish our town and region could have been spared the devastation, but I take pride in how we reacted. I’m especially thankful to staff, Trustees and volunteers who got behind the AMA. Fortunately when Hurricane Michael swept through last October and plunged the region into darkness, the AMA sustained minimal damage.

Reaching out to the community also is something we are doing through exhibitions and programming. We have provided a safe space where open discussions about society can take place in a non-confrontational manner. This year we welcomed more than 15 visiting artists who have helped us take a closer look at their work and perhaps see things in a different way.

We are creating conversation with art as the catalyst. I believe that is what museums should do. I also believe we are doing it well. I feel honored to have played a role in what has been a transitional period for the Albany Museum of Art. The confidence that the Board has shown and the support of the Trustees, my staff, our members and the community have been gratifying.

While I am sad to leave the museum and a job I love, there also is anticipation and excitment about what adventures are ahead for my husband, Tim, and me.

When I place that fresh canvas on the easel on July 1, I’ll look often at the one that we all painstakingly painted these past five years. With bold strokes of beautiful colors that overwhelm the few shadows, we, in so many ways, created a masterpiece together. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.

EDUCATORS AS ARTISTS: JURIED COLLEGE FACULTY EXHIBITION The Albany Museum of Art will open Educators as Artists: Juried College Faculty Exhibition on June 27 in the East Gallery. The exhibition will continue through Oct 12, 2019.

Faculty at Albany State University, Albany Technical College, Georgia Southwestern State University, Valdosta State University, Florida State University, Florida A&M University, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Andrew College, Thomas College and Tallahassee Community College were invited to enter.

The all-media exhibition is to be juried by Hannah Israel, professor of art and the gallery director at Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga. Israel received her Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Her work encompasses various interests, including sculpture, installation, video and mark-making.

She has exhibited her work at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta; the Zuckerman Museum of Art in Kennesaw, Ga.; The Vargas Museum of Art in the Philippines; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Honolulu; I-Space in Chicago, and the Krannert Art Museum in Champaign, Ill. Israel has received the Daedalus Art Grant (New York City), the Creative and Performance Art Fellowship at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, Ill., and the Artist Fellowship at Cornell University, N.Y., and the Banff Center scholarship, Canada. She has also curated numerous solo and group exhibitions.

Hannah Israel, professor of art and the gallery director at Columbus State University in Columbus, is jurying Educators as Artists, which opens June 27 in the AMA East Gallery.

This year, Israel’s work will be featured in a group exhibition, Highlighting Contemporary Art in Georgia: Cut & Paste, Works of Paper, which will travel to venues including the Museum of Papermaking in Atlanta, the Lyndon Art Center in Athens, and the Telfair Museum in Savannah. She completed a residency program at the Banff Creativity and Innovation Center for the Arts in Canada. Israel was awarded the 2019 Blue Heron Nature Preserve Artist in Residence in Atlanta.

FIGURE FORWARD Jill Frank, Jaime Bull, William Downs

Figure Forward offers a sharp departure from the way the female figure traditionally has been depicted in art. The exhibition in the Haley Gallery from June 27 until Oct 12, 2019 features works by Atlanta artists Jill Frank, Jaime Bull and William Downs.

“As the guest curator at the Albany Museum of Art, I get to investigate, view and explore art around the state of Georgia,” AMA Curator Didi Dunphy said. “One of my visits led me to the Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University, where I got to know a colleague, Sarah Higgins, former curator at the ZMA.” The AMA exhibition is Dunphy’s interpretation of the ZMA exhibition Hobbs originally curated.

“I admire Sarah's rigorous inquiry into contemporary art, particularly the way we look at the body in the case of this exhibition, Figure Forward,” Dunphy said.

She said Higgins’ curatorial vision for Figure Forward “is sensitive, smart and, at times, whimsical. For the AMA, I am delighted to be interpreting and hosting this iteration of this show.”

JILL FRANK Frank’s photography explores relationships between individuals and their social groups, between subject and camera, and the intricate layers of authenticity and performance that shift, dissolve and reemerge in such interactions.

Her work often operates as portraiture, but the focus of the portrait is prone to extend beyond the body to its immediate context. The subject is frequently shown caught up in a moment of negotiation between

internal self-awareness and external presentation.

Frank also focuses on youth and adolescence as a time when tensions between internal and external self, performance and verity are fluid, yet fiercely negotiated.

The series on view, titled The Creek, was produced in the spring of 2018 for Figure Forward. Frank photographed her subjects swimming in a creek in the Hudson Valley of New York. The photos are printed on silk, allowing gentle disturbances in the air made by visitors to create movement.

WILLIAM DOWNS Downs brings extensive experience drawing the figure from life together with references to art history to create drawings that feel dreamlike and outside of time.

The figures in his work defy straightforward interpretation. They are in motion, yet they are suspended in precise compositions reminiscent of art historical heavyweights such as Hironymous Bosch, Philip Guston and Paul Cézanne. Androgynous, sensual and elusive, the characters that populate Downs’ work balance on a fine line that intersects figure study and psychological allegory. In his work, energy and adversity coexist alongside jubilation and libido.

Jaime Bull, Beach Party, 2018, bathing suits, plastic bags, printed terrycloth

JAIME BULL Bull’s artwork approaches bodies—specificially, women’s bodies—with affectionate humor and a celebratory, feminist perspective. In her sculpture, she utilizes materials such as bright spandex, second-hand one-piece bathing suits, and workout attire, often stuffed with plastic shopping bags to create lumpy, curvaceous, slouching figures. Other sculptures, such as Daphne and Alanis, use an expanded palette of thrift-store bought items and found objects.

Bull’s recurring use of the one-piece bathing suit calls attention to that garment’s association with modesty and the aging, or otherwise de-eroticized, beach body. Her loving treatment of one-pieces and the bodies that fill them redeems those associations, asserting these bodies as unencumbered—freer somehow than their immobility would suggest.

Poignance and pathos are present beneath the absurdity and humor of Bull’s work. Her titles emphasize the personification of the materials, suggesting that the self can be contained and represented by these partial bodies and their

flamboyant wrappers. Headless and limbless, the swimsuits, workout-wear and sequined gowns must do the work of communicating the figures’ personalities. Truncated as they are, and therefore unable to swim or jog, they can only lounge—leaning on one another. Their absurd, entangled predicament emphasizes and questions the relationships between them.

SARAH HIGGINS Higgins, editor and art director of Art Papers, has curated more than 40 exhibitions featuring a diverse range of emerging, established and international artists for institutions such as the Hessel Museum of Art, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, and Atlantic Center for the Arts. She holds a BFA in printmaking and sculpture from the Atlanta College of Art and a M.A. in curatorial studies from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.

Michael Oliveri creates art with science, using powerful microscopes to create images that remind viewers of art that dates back centuries. His exhibition, Fragments of a Violent World, will be in the West Gallery from June 27 – Oct 12, 2019.

using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) which trigger our visual memory in unexpected ways through a calculated use of composition, scale and concept. Many of these works trigger the memories of 17th century Flemish Breakfast Paintings.”

“My microscopy images are an amalgam of photography and science,” the Los Angeles native says.

“My intent is to fuse two very distinct aspects of society and culture / science and art, and connect them by way of aesthetics. Finding the apex at which science, art, and technology converge on a profound level is what I am truly passionate about.

Oliveri received his MFA in New Genres from UCLA, a BFA in Sculpture at the San Francisco Art Institute. He is the chair and creator of the ArtX department at the University of Georgia. His work is conceptually based, utilizing a media ranging from large photographic prints to multi media installations and performances.

Live animals, immigrant workers, hydroponics, radio signal technology, effects processors, video and photography are examples of his unlimited palette.

INSPIRING WELLNESS THROUGH THE ARTS Jose Tongol | Hodges Regional Gallery

Artwork by Dr. Jose Tongol will be on display throughout June 2019 in the Haley Regional Sales Gallery.

“We’re going to exhibit some of my artwork, basically pencil drawings,” said Tongol, a physician at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital who is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine.

While Tongol practices the medical arts, he engages the cultural arts as well. He was inspired to take up drawing after taking a drawing workshop at the AMA. In addition to his artwork, the doctor is well known for his musical performances locally with his band, the Yo-Yos. He said his exhibition at the AMA will include some books he has compiled of his drawings and poetry.

Noting his brother is a photographer, the doctor said a love for the arts runs deep in his family. “I mix well— not with the medical people, to tell you the truth, but with the artists more than anybody else,” he said.

Tongol’s exhibition comes at an especially appropriate time. June is National Cancer Survivors Month. Sales of his artwork will benefit the Gloria Tongol Cancer Wellness Foundation, with a portion going to the Albany Museum of Art. Tongol, whose wife is a cancer survivor, named the foundation for his mother, who died from lung cancer. The foundation teaches cancer survivors “how to take care of themselves,” including reducing stress through activities like artwork, yoga and meditation, he said.

Abstaining from tobacco and limiting alcohol consumption are critical, but there are other important ways to reduce your risk of cancer, Tongol said. “The best things you can do are maintain your weight, exercise, eat properly and, most importantly, control stress,” he said. “Stress causes everything. Your immunity is messed up when you’re not taking care of yourself. When you’re stressed out, your immunity falls down and then a lot of things happen with your body.”

AMA HELPS STUDENT ARTIST WITH D.C. VISIT Phillip Walker, a sophomore at Columbus High School, will have his oil painting Mood Marsh on display in Washington, D.C., after winning the top prize in the 2nd Congressional District in the 38th annual Congressional Art Competition.

Each district winner’s artwork will be on display for a year in the heavily traveled Cannon Tunnel, a pedestrian corridor that connects the House offices with the Capitol. A national reception for the winners will be conducted in late June.

Walker and a parent will receive airfare to Washington to attend the national reception with Congressman Sanford Bishop, D-Albany, who represents the 2nd District. The Albany Museum of Art, in addition to hosting the announcement in April, is providing two nights at a Washington hotel for Walker and a parent.

The AMA also offered a purchase award of $250 for the painting, which Walker accepted.

SUPPER SERIES: A Midsummer Night’s Dinner July 18 | 6:30 pm

The fourth season of the AMA’s Fine Art of Dining Culinary Series will come to a satisfying conclusion on at 6 pm, Thursday, July 18, 2019 with A Midsummer Night’s Supper. Three talented chefs will create a fantastic dinner that will be enjoyed at two Frank McCall designed homes.

Chefs Terry Koval and Hudson Rouse, of Atlanta, and Todd White, of Albany, will be featured at the dinner, which will be conducted at the homes of Alex and Staci Willson, and Dr. Joseph and Annabelle Stubbs.

Koval has enjoyed stints in some of Atlanta’s most recognized kitchens, including Canoe, Buckhead Diner, Lobby at TWELVE, Room at TWELVE and Farm Burger and Wrecking Bar Brewpub. He and his wife recently opened the Deer and the Dove near Decatur Square.

Rouse, owner of Rising Son, was raised in Albany in a family of chefs sharing a passion for food. In 2016, he and his wife, Kathryn Fitzgerald Rouse, also a powerhouse in the culinary field, opened their restaurant in Avondale Estates.

White, who is starting a new catering business after serving several years as department chair of the

Culinary Arts Program at Albany Technical College, was a senior chef for 15 years for Marriott. He is a member of Georgia Grown’s Executive Chef Team.

McCall was a noted architect who practiced in the classical tradition and briefly lived in Albany before establishing offices in Moultrie and Macon. He was known for his unerring sense of proportion, scale and detailing, and enjoyed a large following from the Sea Island colony.

Built in 1980, the Willson home was custom designed

by McCall (1916-91) and built by Lamar Reese for Dr. and Mrs. Tom Myers. It features heart pine and brick floors, three fireplaces and a library. The Stubbs home, custom designed by McCall, was built in 1966 for Albany pediatrician Dr. Prentiss Findlay III and his wife, Elaine.

AMA CHALKFEST SET FOR OCT 5 AMA ChalkFest is returning to the 100 block of Pine Avenue on Saturday, Oct 5, 2019, with more chalk artists, more craft beer, more music, more food trucks, more vendors and a new theme—Pop Art & Pop Tops.

Mallory Black, who chairs the Albany Museum of Art’s ChalkFest Committee, said organizers will build on the outstanding success of the inaugural chalk art and craft beer festival, which will be conducted annually on the first Saturday of October.

“I think there’s a lot more excitement in the community about ChalkFest,” Black said. “The ones who attended saw how much fun it was last year, and how engaged the community was. We have a lot of people ready to attend this year and also to get involved.”

AMA ChalkFest is a major fundraiser for the Albany Museum of Art. Revenues generated by the event will be used to help the museum in its mission to build a stronger community through art with world-class exhibitions, free admission and important educational programming.

This year, 24 professional chalk artists will participate, more than double the number who were featured in 2018. “We had several who heard what a good event it was who want to participate this year,” Black said. “That

word’s spread throughout the chalk artist community.”

The street art festival opens at 10 am with a focus on children and school-related activities.

“The kids’ area and the kids’ art contest were huge hits last year,” Black said. “We’re looking to expand that area and give them more room so they can show off their artistic abilities, as well as bring their parents, sisters, brothers and friends to enjoy the festivities.”

The craft beer portion of the festival and the live music will get started at noon and continue until the gates close at 5 pm. With 15 craft breweries participating, it “was a real success last year,” Black said.

“Pretoria Fields really helped us get that off the ground,” she said. “This year, we hope to incorporate even more craft breweries from within the state. We also are exploring the possibility of adding some local and state wineries.

“The idea is to add more dimension every year. We’re looking to bring on more art, more craft beer, more food vendors, more professional artists. The entertainment was a huge draw last year. We had some great local bands we were proud to have. We’re looking to do the same again.”

As the event grows, the need for volunteers grows with it. “It’s a real fun event to get involved with,” she said. “If you have interest in volunteering, we have many areas where you can volunteer. We’ll find a place where you can volunteer and have a good time.”

The world will come to Albany for young campers in the Albany Museum of Art’s Art Adventures Around the World. With seven Summer Art Camps, there is something for every child.

“We think that parents and kids will be extremely happy with our camp themes this summer,” Annie Vanoteghem, director of Education and Public Programming for the AMA, said. “It’s an exciting lineup, from classic art to culinary arts to animation and even fashion design.

“There’s a world of choices for campers this summer with our Art Adventures Around the World.”

Camps are age-appropriate for children, with dual camps being conducted some weeks to accommodate both younger campers in rising grades K-2nd and older campers in grades 3-5.

“We wanted to try something new with the split camps so that our young campers get the most out of their week,” Vanoteghem said. “We think these age groupings will enhance our campers’ experiences.”

Free early drop-off at 8 am and late pick-up at 5 pm are available for all 9 am-4 pm camps.

AMA CONTEMPORARIES SET FOR NEW SEASON

AMA Contemporaries events allows young professionals to combine a love for art with entertaining evenings.

Get ready for “Round 2” of the AMA Contemporaries.

The second season of Contemporaries events gets underway Thursday, Aug 1, 2019 with bar master Joel White defending his title at the second Bar Fight: An Evening of Masterfully Mixed Cocktails Inspired by Famous Works of Art. The event is 7-9 pm at the Albany Museum of Art. Bar Fight II will again feature bartenders who are inspired by works of art as they vie to create Albany’s signature cocktail of the summer. In addition to the judges’ decision, those attending will be able to vote for the People’s Choice winner. White swept both categories at the inaugural event in 2018. Those attending will enjoy the AMA galleries, delicious hors d’oeuvres, tastings of the contending cocktails, great live music and a cash bar.

K.K. Snyder, editor of Southwest Georgia Living magazine, will lead the evening’s discussion on Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. In the novel, Chevalier imagines a fictional account of 17th century painter Johannes Vermeer, the model and the painting.

TRUSTEE SPOTLIGHT: JIM WOMACK Jim Womack channels William Faulkner in discussing the Albany Museum of Art. In his 1950 speech accepting the Nobel Prize, Faulkner said mankind, facing war and nuclear weapons, “will not merely endure: he will prevail.”

Womack, owner of Tri-State Florist Supply, sees the AMA’s future as one in which the museum thrives. Art has always been dear to him and his late wife, Libby Womack, who passed in 2012. A longtime educator and AMA supporter, she believed art plays a critical role in education. A member of the AMA Board of Trustees, her name graces the museum’s annual Christmas break art camp and the Art Ball Paddle Raise that generates funds for museum educational programming, internships and art camp scholarships.

“When she passed away, I was asked to join the Board of Trustees,” said Womack, who joined the board in 2015 and now serves on the Executive Committee. “I saw it as an opportunity to work for the community good in a productive way.”

Some of that work came under crisis conditions when the January 2017 storms devastated the area. The AMA building was severely damaged, forcing its collection to be taken to safe locations for conservation and storage. “Those storms were major setbacks for the community, and for the Art Museum,” Womack said, adding, “Board members, staff and community volunteers worked generously during the crisis.”

The AMA reopened in August 2017. “Staff got organic programs going with families and kids that were so dynamic,” Womack said. “They’re effective in developing and offering programs that include every part of our community. That’s art. That’s what we ought to be doing.”

Womack noted as examples Courageous Conversations, which brought students from public and private high schools to the AMA to discuss race relations, and The Color of Justice, a panel discussion in which artist Masud Olufani and Jimmie Gardner, who was wrongfully imprisoned for 27 years, discussed race and the justice system. Olufani’s Memory and Meaning exhibition explores social justice.

“It’s a powerful exhibit,” Womack said. “Being a South Georgia boy, that spoke to me. From a philosophical, human standpoint, it brought me to an interactive level with the community, with my past and with the current things that are still going on. The Color of Justice was really quite poignant in bringing this full circle.

“I think that’s what art is. It wasn’t confrontational. It was feeling, sharing and examining. It elevated the conversation.”

“The AMA must continue to do that to thrive,” he said, even as the Board searches to replace retiring Executive Director Paula Williams, who Womack said made a “foundational contribution.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: JO ELLIOTT JONES For more than seven decades, Jo Elliott Jones has been active in the arts in Albany. One of three people who have been Albany Museum of Art members since 1971, she has been involved with the museum since its earliest days.

“We started out in a rental unit that was owned by Banks Haley on Oglethorpe,” Mrs. Jones recalled during a recent interview, adding that she, Bee McCormack and Eloise Haley would volunteer at what was then known as the Southwest Georgia Art Association.

“It was all volunteers at first,” she said. “All of us avid volunteers would each take an afternoon.”

When Mrs. Jones moved to Albany in 1947 with her husband, Charles Marks Jones, Jr., they immediately immersed themselves in the arts, including the Albany Concert Association and Theatre Albany.

“We got involved in the arts right away,” she said. “We were active in the arts from then on. I do it and I’ve always done it (support the arts).”

It is a love that has been instilled in her family, especially her daughter, Nancy Presley, a member since 1985. “She’s the artist,” Mrs. Jones said. “She taught art.”

Mrs. Jones has her own talents. She penned a theater column in The Albany Herald for about 20 years. She also sings, which she does nearly every Sunday morning in the choir at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Albany. “I try to keep going,” she said. ”I’ve got a fellowship up there in the choir loft.”

She also has seen all the advancements of the AMA. Through the generosity of W. Banks Haley, Jr., the art association moved into a gallery constructed on North Slappey Boulevard in 1969. The association changed its name to the Albany Museum of Art in 1980 and began the capital campaign that enabled it to move into the present site at 311 Meadowlark Drive.

“Just think of the size of the one on Slappey compared to the one now on Meadowlark,” Mrs. Jones said.

But she has fond memories of the Haley Gallery on Slappey. “We used to have dinner theater (with Theatre Albany) and we had them at the museum,” Mrs. Jones recalled, adding that wait staff would have to scurry up and down the stairs. “It was a fun thing to do.”

Her husband, who passed in 2001, “was very active in those days. I can’t remember what year it was, but a sinkhole just appeared there one day. It was filled in pretty quickly. But Charles had just met a college student who was in town studying sinkholes. Charles rooted him out of bed to go see it.”

Asked why art is important to the Albany community, Mrs. Jones was succinct. “I think it’s the heartbeat,” she said.

The Albany Museum of Art is undergoing several personnel changes, with two new staff members and one staff member leaving.

Windsor School who studied art history at the College of Charleston. She joined the AMA staff shortly after she moved back to Albany from Macon in 2015.

Chloe Hinton, director of Education and Public Programming since 2016, is the AMA’s new director of Development and Membership.

Vanoteghem, a Philadelphia, Pa., native, is a graduate of Georgia College and State University with a B.A. in Art History and Museum Studies. She began an internship in the AMA Education Department in July 2018. That internship gave her the experience that landed her the job with the museum.

Annie Moreschi Vanoteghem, who joined the AMA staff full-time on April 15, is the new director of Education and Public Programming.

Todd Deariso, who came on board May 28, is new Special Events manager.

Randi Hooks, the Facilities and Special Events manager, is returning to college as a full-time student at Valdosta State University. Her last day with the museum was May 31.

Intern Camille Floyd is traveling to the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens this summer for registrar training.

A volunteer at numerous AMA events, he has a Ed.D. in Educational Administration from University of Phoenix and Master’s Degrees in Early Childhood Education and Educational Leadership, as well as a Specialist Degree in Educational leadership, all from Valdosta State.

Floyd, who has a B.A. from Albany State University, has been an intern at the AMA for nearly three years.
