2013 Chairman The year 2013 is going to be an amazing year in Albany and at the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce! We have so much to celebrate this past year, but our continued success depends on our plans for the future and our ability to carry them out.

As a small business owner, I have experienced first-hand what Chamber membership can do for business. I’ve learned the hard way, you get out of life what you put into life…and it’s been a valuable lesson.

This year, as the Chamber leadership begins our plan of work, we will be striving hard to deliver even more value to our members…new benefits, new opportunities to be involved, new ideas and recruiting new members.

The year 2012 brought national recognition, change and innovation to the Chamber. In the first quarter of 2012, a 5 kW solar panel system was installed atop the chamber building through a partnership with the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission, reducing the amount of energy the building pulls from the local energy grid. By mid-year, the Chamber had won two national honors from the American Chamber of Commerce Executives and the Alliance for Regional Stewardship for its ground-breaking workforce development program, Strive2Thrive.

In April, the Chamber welcomed in new leadership with the hiring of Chris Hardy, IOM, as president and CEO. Hardy came to Albany from Clemson, South Carolina, where he was president and CEO of the Clemson Area Chamber. The Chamber also welcomed Mary Bickerstaff as our new membership director. Bickerstaff came to the Chamber with 23 years of sales experience at The Albany Herald.

Our New Board Members for 2013 Mike Cooper, is Senior Vice President at Merrill Lynch where he has worked for the past 31 years. Mike is an Albany native and attended the Albany public schools where he graduated from Westover High School. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia. Mike has three daughters, Caitlyn, Kellen and Kathleen.

David Durland is Executive Vice President and Chief Banking Officer for HeritageBank Of The South. Prior to moving to Albany in 2011, David worked with several community and regional banks over his 30 year banking career. He currently serves on the board of United Way of SWGA and the VSU Real Estate Foundation. David and his wife Cathy have two daughters, Caroline and Kate.

Brenda Holloway is President/CEO at FOX31 WFXL-TV in Albany. Her responsibility is to oversee all aspects of the television station. During her tenure, she has partnered with Strive2Thrive and The Albany Herald. While in Southwest Georgia, she wants to coordinate with people and businesses to help the community grow and become stronger. Throughout her career, Brenda has been extensively involved with various non-profit organizations. She has devoted her time and money to organizations such as United Way.

Patricia Rivers King is Vice President/Branch Manager SunTrust Bank downtown location. Patricia has been in banking since 1982. She is a member of Women In Network and a board member of Albany Civil Rights Institute. Patricia is a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she holds the following duties: Praise and Worship leader, treasurer, family group ministry leader, youth choir directress and deaconess ministry. She is married to Dr. Charles C. King, Sr. and together they have six children.

Cal McMillan Is the Market President of the Albany region for Ameris Bank of Albany.

He has a BS Degree in Finance from Troy State University and holds a graduate degree in banking from the University of Georgia and a series 6 & 63 Security License from the Investment Training Institute in Atlanta. He currently is the Chairman of Moultrie Technical College Board of Directors, and Trustee of Darton College Foundation. Cal, a native of Monroeville, Ala., is married to the former Doris Stanley and has two sons, Ryan and Jordan.

Jim Moore received his undergraduate degree in Ag Economics and his law degree from the University of Georgia. He is President and Managing Partner of the law firm of Moore, Clarke, DuVall & Rodgers, PC. Jim is a long time member of the Board of the Albany YMCA. He presently serves as President of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Southwest Georgia and is a member of numerous non profit organizations. Jim and his wife, Martha, are active members of Porterfield and have three children, Allison, Anna, and Jake.

Victor L. Powell serves as Presiding Bishop of Rhema Word Cathedral. The Chicago, Illinois native served nine years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Bishop Powell earned a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in theology from Moriah Institute of Biblical Studies and also received an honorary doctorate in biblical studies from Midwest Theological Institute of Indiana. Powell is the founder of Covenant Network Ministries. In 2003, Bishop Powell released his first book entitled, Closet Ministry: The Power of Prayer and the Release of Destiny. Recently, Powell released a new offering, The Awakening: The Discovery of You.

Chandu Kuntawala is the Deputy Program Manager for Exelis, Inc. He has a BS in Aeronautical Engineering from EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University and a Masters in Business/Finance. Chandu attended Leadership Albany and was a founding member of Generation Success, Youth Leadership program. He is Green Belt Certified in Lean Six Sigma and was selected by the Georgia Governor to serve as a Graduation Coach for Communities in Schools. Chandu and his wife Madhu have two daughters Meera and Geeta.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO Adaptation or Change? Actually It’s Both As with any organization that experiences a transition in leadership, change of some type is usually a foregone conclusion. The only question is to what degree? Albert Einstein once said “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking”.

There are so many truths to that statement I honestly don’t know where to begin. The one thing I am sure of is that we, as an organization, must change our method of thinking and adapt to the makeup of our community if we are to continue to be relevant to our membership and area businesses. It is important for us to celebrate our successes but it is vital that we address those areas where we have not been as successful.

The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce has a proud history of successes, more than I can mention with the limited amount of space that I have. With that being said, I must say there have also been failures that we cannot ignore any longer. One of those we must begin addressing now is how we have failed to adapt to a changing business community. Businesses large and small have been forced by the economy to change how they operate, as well as how they interact with their customers. This is where I believe we as a Chamber of Commerce have fallen short.

We have not addressed incorporating our own changes in how we operate, specifically in how we address the concerns and issues within our own membership. I don’t believe we have necessarily turned the other cheek as much as we have been hesitant to address what our core values are. We have not adapted well at addressing the single most important word that you will find in our mission statement: membership.

We must adapt to the changing scope of our membership which has been in a steady decline recently, largely due to the economy. There are numerous ways we will adapt and change in 2013, but the most important is placing a greater emphasis on our membership. We invite you to help us grow, adapt and change so we are better equipped to be what I believe we can be; the best service providing organization in Southwest Georgia.

A MESSAGE FROM MCLB ALBANY To Whom Much Is Given It is often said, “To whom much is given, much is required,” and we at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany require much from our Marines, Civilian-Marines and Sailors. Many members of our workforce are surpassing many of my expectations as they involve themselves in mentorship programs with other schools such as the International Studies Elementary Charter School and Dougherty Comprehensive High School. Such programs include the MISTA program (Motivating, Inspiring, Students, To, Achieve) which introduces role models to at-risk high school students. Other members of our workforce are also involved in M.I.A. (Mentors, In, Action), which focuses primarily on the growth of all students academically, physically and emotionally by motivating students to strive for excellence.

Although these young men and women have proven their enthusiasm by volunteering for these programs, the following year will provide new and exciting opportunities as we Col. Embodying the concept of Country, Corps and Community, their influence not only spreads the ideas of selfless service, education and good citizenship, but also spreads hope in the face of economic hardship.

It’s also no secret our uniformed members never stay at a base or station for very long. For this reason we challenge Marines and Sailors to leave a piece of themselves here before they leave, whether it’s their knowledge or experience or the lasting relationships they build while serving the public.

This is not a recruiting tool for the Marine Corps, but a recruiting tool for good citizens. We share the tools of our trade in regard to initiative, integrity, and having a concept beyond oneself. More importantly, we share a determination to always strive and never give-up in the face of adversity. Not only have we taken it upon ourselves to do this we ask for those who are able in this community to help us with these efforts. Many of you already have thorough programs sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and I applaud your continued success in doing so.

ECONOMIC AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany: Support the sustainability, viability and daily operations of MCLB-Albany as a driving force in the Greater Albany economy and urge federal intervention to prevent catastrophic downsizing of military installations in SW Georgia.

Transportation: Support a dedicated, sustainable alternative source of state funding that will allow SW Georgia to four lane Highway 133 from Albany to Valdosta, a major artery for MCLB-Albany to move equipment to and from the ports, and urges state officials to identify and advance dedicated funding for the completion of key corridors to include US Highway 27 in South and Southwest Georgia.

ASU Language, Performing and Visual Arts Center: Support $28.8 million in state funding for the construction of the Albany State University Language, Performing and Visual Arts Center to provide specialized-need and additional classrooms, teaching labs, a lecture and performance hall, computer labs, offices, art studios, music practice rooms and studio space for radio and television broadcasting. The estimated economic impact to the region of this project is $58 million dollars.

Our Program • In 1999, Forbes Magazine identified Albany, Georgia as the nation’s “fourth poorest metro in America.”

• As the years progressed, the statistics worsened: Albany, Ga., now shows 25.2% of individuals and 39% of families living in poverty; 73% of those families have five or more children; 59% are unemployed; 39% of County School System students did not finish high school; and, 80% of children qualify for free/reduced lunches.

• With dismal reports about the local workforce and worsening reports about diminished capacity and waning industry, the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce stepped up in 2010 to launch a community-based, regional effort to ensure all people in the Albany area were provided opportunities to fully engage in regional prosperity and governance over their own futures.

Our Progress Since 2010, 58 low-income families (including a total of more than 150 men, women, and children) enrolled in Strive2Thrive with a desire to overcome poverty and become self-sufficient. Out of the 58 families who have enrolled in Strive2Thrive to date, 50 families have successfully completed Getting Ahead and graduated into “Circles” where they have been or are waiting to be matched with Allies who have committed to offer ongoing support to the Circle leaders as they continue their education, training, and professional goals. That’s an 88% success rate!

Our Services Getting Ahead During a 16-week course, entitled “Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World,” participants discuss the issues surrounding poverty and develop a personal plan for moving out of poverty.

Circles™ Upon graduating from Getting Ahead, participants have the option to become Circle Leaders and be matched with 2-4 Allies, or volunteers, who have committed to offering on-going support as the Circle Leader begins achieving his or her goals.

Intensive Services Intensive Service Coordination involves case management for children and adults with complex special needs. Participants with complex special needs will receive specialized case management that involves multiple service providers collaborating to develop, coordinate, and manage the implementation of an integrated plan to meet the identified needs of the family to support goal achievement. Other programs include: Health and Wellness, Parenting Classes, and Disability Support Services.

Annual Report Personal Development Strive2Thrive’s Personal Development series includes activities that Circle Leaders improve their awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.

Professional Development Based upon feedback from local business leaders and professionals, S2T offers a 16-week training to develop the core competencies necessary for success in both education and work.

Financial Literacy Strive2Thrive offers an 8-week financial literacy series covering basic financial topics developed by the Federal Deposit Insurance (FDIC) MoneySmart curriculum. Topics of discussion also include predatory practices including how credit scoring determines interest rate, subprime lending, payday lending, title loan programs and mortgage flipping to name a few. This will help consumers avoid entering into credit transactions that are priced beyond their capacity to repay.

The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce and Strive2Thrive took home big honors at the 2012 American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) National Convention.

The Chamber’s unique workforce development program, which seeks to partner working professionals with Albany-area families living in poverty, won the Gold Communications in Excellence Award by the ACCE, before being

named Best of Show in its category. Albany beat out the Prince William Chamber of Commerce in Virginia for the top honor.

S2T was also named a finalist in the Alliance for Regional Stewardship (ARS) Organizational Champion Award. Only three chambers nationwide were named ARS finalists a nod to the Albany’s success in demonstrating the principles of regional stewardship including innovation, creating livable communities, social inclusion and collaborative governance.
