COMMENTS FROM THE 2013 CHAIRMAN At the September Rise n Shine Chamber Breakfast we celebrated a year of success and accomplishments of Strive2Thrive, Albany’s anti-poverty initiative. This annual update is given to Chamber and community leaders to celebrate the great work of the organization the Albany Area Chamber started four years ago. The Chamber took on a role that was unique to any Chamber of Commerce in the country. Your chamber made a decision to be the catalyst to help rid Albany and Dougherty County of the generational poverty that had grown to national ranking.

Cynthia George Artesian Consulting

While a chamber is in the business of promoting business, it is a logical step for a chamber to want to improve the life of a large part of its citizens. The chamber also realized that when we rid ourselves of poverty, we all celebrate in the benefits. Self sustaining families that can raise children to never have to experience poverty, provide us with a better workforce, and help our children get a better education. Plus, with the reduction of poverty comes the reduction of crime and government subsidies.

But with that all aside, the real reason we, as businesses, should and do support this local community initiative, is because it is the right thing to do. You see, Strive2Thrive teaches families how to set goals, manage money, parenting skills, and the list goes on and on. For the first time in their lives, many of our families have a future that is bright and full of hope. Strive2Thrive doesn’t provide shelter, clothing, or other handouts. What we do provide is a circle of friends and allies with the training and encouragement to do it on their own. And, it’s working. Thank you to all the Chamber members who have supported us and continue to do so. We celebrate you along with our families as we make strides each and every day.

Let’s Grow Together

Business Expo What a great event! More than 400 people filled the halls at the Hilton Garden Inn to see what the 48 vendors had to offer. Upon arrival each person was given a card that they had to have signed by 12 vendors and our five sponsors -- A. West Enterprise, Central Monitoring, CTSI, Southern Point Staffing and WSWG-TV -- to be eligible for the grand prize drawing of an iPad. There also were drawings throughout the evening with items donated by many of the vendors, and of course lots of lucky winners. The Chamber could not have been more pleased with 2013 Business Expo, as were our vendors... The Business Expo is truly a BRIGHT SIDE event for the city. The energy in the room indicates great things are happening. With every new business opening and every candidate finding a new job, we become stronger. -- Ken Boler, General Manager, The Albany Herald, www.albanyherald.com The Business expo held at the Hilton Garden Inn was an excitng event that showcased a great fellowship of the business and religious world..."both are important. Our Church Christian Life Ministries Baptist Church witnessed an event that afforded us an opportunity to share christian views as well as learn more about the business world and the many services they provide. This indeed was an evening that we will forever remember. Looking forward to next year. -Dr. Raymond Polite Sr. Pastor, Christian Life Missionary Baptist Church, 3980 Gillionville Rd., 229 405-1424 The recent Business Expo was a great opportunity to introduce our custom home business in more detail to the local business community. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO Earlier this year our Chamber adopted the “Growing Together” philosophy that has stuck with each of our staff in everything we have done since. Earlier this year we conducted a volunteer based membership drive with the “Growing Together” platform. Just last month we held our traditional Business Expo with the same “Growing Together” theme. This is not necessarily a new theme for the Chamber, nor are we attempting to re-brand ourselves with this theory. It is more about a message that we want to send to not only ourselves and our dedicated volunteers, but also the rest of the community.

Chris Hardy, IOM, CCE President/CEO

Since I arrived in May of 2012, I have seen so many different examples of how this community wants to thrive again and how we want to work together for the common good. I have seen it in how the Chamber is re-building our relationship with Public Education, I have seen it in how we are placing a greater focus on small business, and I have also seen it in various community efforts that the Chamber is not directly or even indirectly involved in. When the Chamber is neither directly nor indirectly involved in a project or effort that benefits this community, we certainly do not take offense as it is a realization that this community is making great strides to come together even if it appears slow at times or baby step like.

Your Chamber and our volunteer leadership have begun searching for ways to embrace and build on the strengths of diversity though the task is not easy. Stereotypes and past experiences often inhibit the kinds of interaction essential to building a better community. The answer to this challenge often comes when citizens, businesses and education have the opportunity to work together on real issues. Developing leaders and creating action broadens the concept of leadership – making it more inclusive and recognizing our accomplishments and understanding our responsibilities. For our community to realize its potential, we must all assume the role in solving the problems and meeting the opportunities of the present. James Joseph once said that “Although the present leadership climate may appear at first glance to be a leadership vacuum, it is more likely that we are simply looking in the wrong place for visionary leaders. If we have learned anything, it should be that the next generation of leaders is not likely to fit the traditional mold, nor are those leaders likely to be found in traditional places. If anyone is left out or ignored in our community, we are likely to further hinder our chances or realizing our potential to lead Southwest GA, as not only the retail hub but also the Economic Development leader we once were and can be once again. I ask each of you to see what you can do to make our potential a reality regardless the scale of the effort.

STRIVE2THRIVE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2013 Strive2Thrive reached a major milestone as it graduated its first class of families who successfully completed the 2 ½ year program. Seven families (including 20 men, women, and children) shared their journey through Strive2Thrive to more than 150 guests, many of whom fought back tears as they watched the heart-tugging documentaries reflecting the trials and triumphs of the graduates. Pastor Charlene Glover of Trumpet of God Ministries and Training Center served as the keynote speaker for the event.

RISE N SHINE SHOWCASES STRIVE2THRIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Ausha Jackson, Executive Director Strive2Thrive, presents Sharon Davis the 2013 Jane Willson Family of the Year Award.

The September Rise N Shine sponsored by Albany State University and SB&T, gave Strive2Thrive an opportunity to showcase their accomplishments. Sharon Davis, a S2T Circle Leader, received the Jane Willson Family of the

Year Award. As you read her story you will see why Sharon was so deserving of this acolade. I am Sharon Davis, a 49 year-old widowed mother of two adult children. I worked for a local company for 19 years, but due to a downsizing in 2010, I was laid off my job and it became difficult to support my then minor children. In 2011, an unexpected tragedy occured when my son died unexpectedly. His sudden death left me in a state of depression and withdrawal. In 2012, I heard about Strive2Thrive through local news reports and decided to seek assistance. When I entered Strive2Thrive, I had a fear of driving at night and would never travel alone after dark. One day during a counseling session, Ms. Alvita Swain, Strive2Thrive Intensive Services Coach, told me that if I wanted to continue my participation in Strive2Thrive, I would have to overcome my fear and begin driving to the Strive2Thrive weekly

meetings. Working with Alvita and participating in therapeutic writing with Dr. Shayla Williams has helped me face my fears and process my grief. Today, not only do I drive alone, but I also drive at night, and I am able to now go into my deceased son’s room for the first time in two years. Upon entering Strive2Thrive, I was a diabetic taking four shots of insulin per day and pain medications for fibromyalgia. Through Strive2Thrive’s partnership with the Albany Area YMCA, I was able to enroll in the YMCA Team Lean Challenge and lost 25 pounds. I am proud to say that I am no longer on insulin and have been taken off pain medications. In addition, as a result of networking and building new relationships while exercising at the YMCA, I received a recommendation for employment, and I now work at the YMCA part-time as a Women’s Health Center Attendant. It is an honor to have been selected as the 2013 Jane Willson Family of the Year recipient.
