2012 Chairman While the Albany Area is a great place to live, work, and do business, like all other communities, our area has its challenges. If you are even remotely plugged in to this great community, you know that a high poverty rate is a major challenge that we face. However, where there are challenges, there are opportunities to overcome them. The Chamber believes that Strive2Thrive is a piece to the puzzle in minimizing poverty in the Albany Area.

Although fighting poverty is not directly associated with the Chamber’s mission to promote and stimulate the economic well-being of our membership and to represent the commercial, industrial, and professional interests in major issues of economic and public policy, our Chamber, through strategic planning, recognized that our high poverty rate hinders the economic well-being of our membership and the business community at-large. As a result, the Chamber developed the Strive2Thrive program through the leadership of John Culbreath and Cynthia George and contributions by countless others along the way.

Miles Espy Since its beginning in 2010, Strive2Thrive has battled poverty by bringing Draffin & Tucker, LLP community support and resources to people who desire to get out of poverty.

Partner The Program strives to develop self-sufficiency in participating families through incentives, coaching, training, and technical assistance. In its short history, Strive2Thrive has become an award winning program that is being studied by other communities as they consider adding similar programs in their areas. Our Chamber is proud to be the first business advocacy organization to develop such a plan of action to move families into self-sufficiency.

As this program has grown beyond the scope of the Chamber’s mission, the Chamber has spun-off Strive2Thrive into its own organization, which has its own focused mission and leadership team. The Chamber is pleased to continue to support and partner with this organization in combating poverty for the enhancement of the economic well-being of our membership.

Just as strategic planning led to an effective poverty-fighting program, the Chamber is pleased with recent strategic planning meetings with the City of Albany and Dougherty County through the Economic Development Commission. This planning has led to the development of new initiatives associated with the three R’s, Recruitment, Retention, and Renewal. When called upon, please be prepared to make investments of your time and talents in these economic development activities, as it is expected to yield dividends for generations to come. Additionally, if your business has not already made financial contributions to the EDC’s efforts for 2012, please join the financial commitment and resolve of your neighbors in the business community, when called upon. Extensive enhancement in economic development becomes more of a reality as we all work together.

Strive2Thrive helps families create new and better lives Jeanetta Miles very easily could have become a statistic. She'd lived a life, after all, that had broken many of her peers, swallowed them whole and spit them out as victims. But unlike those around her on some of Albany's meaner streets who wound up in prison, hustling drugs or dead, Miles found salvation of the sweetest kind. That she found it essentially by accident makes her story all the more compelling.

Miles said she drew strength from volunteers like John Culbreath, who said, "We've seen a lot of ships set sail in Albany. Some of them have sunk to the bottom of the Flint River, and some of them are just drifting along, floundering.

"But this ship has set on a course of eliminating poverty, and by God, that's what we're going to do."

Trusting, however, was not something Miles did easily.

"Yeah, I was a little stubborn at first," she said. "People had let me down so much in my life, I was not ready to open myself up to the possibility that someone actually cared about me, wanted to help me. And it was so hard for me to talk about the life I'd always been ashamed of."

But Griffin and other Strive2Thrive volunteers persisted. And little by little they wore Miles' protective veneer down. And slowly her life started to turn around.

"I changed my mindset," Miles said.

"I put all the stuff in my past behind me; I let it be my past."

The former gang member, long abused by society and — even more hurtful — by the ones she loved, suddenly saw some light at the end of

the tunnel. She got her GED. She enrolled in Albany Technical College's Architectural Drafting and Design program. She found a new place for her and her two children to live.

She's working at Albany Tech now and is four classes away from graduation. She's paid off half the debt she built ("I'm so proud of myself!") and she's working to get a vehicle that will allow her the freedom that has so long eluded her.

"God has helped me," Miles said.

"Strive2Thrive has helped me. I'm ready to graduate from Albany Tech and start my own architectural firm. I want to be one of the people who helps others like Strive2Thrive helped me. I believe there is hope for our community because I have experienced it. I've seen what can

happen."

That, S2T organizer Cynthia George said, is what makes volunteers' efforts so rewarding "These wonderful people, their mental fortitude, they continue to inspire all of us," she said. "We realize that whatever effort we put into this, our community — Albany — will reap the harvest."

Miles, meanwhile, is now the face of Strive2Thrive's efforts, the embodiment of what can be accomplished with the help of dedicated volunteers. She says, though, that more work needs to be done.

"I speak for everyone who's been helped by Strive2Thrive when I say we appreciate the community's support," she said. "But there's more that can be done. We need more allies; we need more volunteers. I'm proof of what can happen; I'm proof of what it means to reach out to another person.

"If someone had given me the help I've gotten from Strive2Thrive when I was growing up, I'd be much farther along than I am now. But I thank God for the struggles I've been through.

Now I know I can use those struggles to help others."

Natasha Bridges, a 2010 Strive2Thrive enrollee, was awarded the 2012 Helpful Hands Award. This award honors the Circle Leader who dedicates the most time “paying it forward� by giving back to the community through volunteerism. Natasha has perfect attendance to Strive2Thrive weekly meetings and trainings and is always the first to ask how can she get involved in the community. This single mother of three is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program at Albany Technical College and is also working to obtain her GED. Her ally, Dr. Lou Ann Best, and Mrs. Dawn Clack, a fellow classmate’s ally, have been tutoring Natasha in math, the only subject she has left to pass. In addition to obtaining her GED, Natasha’s goal is to learn how to drive and obtain her driver’s license.

The 2012 Most Improved award was given to Ishmachelle Starling, a 2010 Strive2Thrive enrollee, for her commitment to Strive2Thrive and consistent desire for self-improvement.

Ishmachelle has maintained perfect attendance while in Strive2Thrive and has shown continuous improvement since her enrollment. This single mother of three is currently enrolled at Everest College and is pursing a diploma in Business Administration. Her ally, Mrs. Wanda Mallard, continues to assist her in her educational, personal, and professional goals.

COUNTRY, CORPS, COMMUNITY A message from MCLB Albany Public service is not a paycheck. It's a mentality focused on creating a greater quality of life for Americans who live and work in our communities, encouraging them to reach for something greater than themselves and placing others before self. The base's "fence line" is not the finish line where our service ends; it's the starting point where it begins. This is why Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany's leadership fosters the concept of "Country, Corps and Community" among its Marines and Civilian-Marines. As the local area's No. 1 civilian employer, this means much of the installation's workforce will give back to the community that made them who they are.

Service to country not only requires wearing the uniform, but realizing that this country is not a single race or creed, but a continuous effort. Our forefathers started this effort when they laid the first foundations for this country, whether it was the foundations of our first meeting halls or the ideological foundations of our way of life. Citizenship is a choice, not just something that is acquired at birth, and every choice Americans make afterward will either serve to weaken or strengthen this effort. MCLB Albany's leadership mentors its young service members and civilians to strengthen this country on and off duty.

Service to Corps means "Committed to having the Courage to practice Honor." Base leadership works to maintain the Marine Corps' values of Honor, Courage and Commitment, and how this relates to public service. Although these values are the core values of the Corps, they also serve as a guiding light for selfless service. This often means stepping out of one's comfort zone to teach a class (Courage) to young people, continuing this service (Commitment) and setting a moral example for others (Honor).

Service to community means volunteerism. MCLB Albany's nearly $707 million dollar contribution to the local economy is not enough. The installation's influence should stretch beyond a dollar amount. This means partnering with community groups, hosting public events on base and providing more mentors to the Greater Albany Area. Marines have these skills as they have applied them in improving the quality of life for others overseas. It is said that every Marine is a rifleman, but every Marine is also a servant. We teach in the Marine Corps that every Marine should leave an area better than he or she found it and this includes our communities.

We, at MCLB Albany, look forward to partnering with community organizations and key leaders as we realize our service to the public. It is said "to whom much is given, much is required" and as the largest contributor to the local economy, we have much to give.

Albany Area Chamber Well Represented at ACCE National Convention The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce came out a big winner at the 2012 American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) National Convention Ausha Jackson in Louisville, Strive2Thrive Kentucky.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO Over the last five months I have talked with many people that share different attitudes and beliefs on why our Chamber is important and what we can do to improve. The key issues that keep resurfacing are: reinforcing the importance of our Chamber and sharing our story with the community.

When I ask people why they are members of our Chamber I receive numerous reasons that vary from personal marketing opportunities to the role we play in public policy and advocacy.

When I speak to area businesses that are not members of our Chamber there are two commonly asked questions: “Why is the Chamber of Commerce important and what can the Chamber do for me?”

Having considered these questions for nearly 12 years, either working or volunteering in the Chamber industry, I would like to submit to our members and the business community my belief on why our Chamber is important.

If you are a business owner, the answer is simple. The Chamber of Commerce is the only organization in our region that advocates for business before legislative and regulatory bodies. We work diligently 365 days a year supporting, promoting and protecting our business community’s interests.

If, however, you are not a business owner, the answer does not appear as straightforward, but the benefits to you are just as important. When small businesses succeed, jobs are created, the tax base increases and new revenue is created for the region.

The Chamber and the Economic Development Commission stand for the private sector – as the champions of job creation, we desperately need the business community’s backing. Ninety percent of our total membership base is small business; they risk their money and time hoping to build a successful business using their skills and hard work. The next time you walk into one of our small businesses, please tip your hat to the individuals you encounter and remember their courage in running that business benefits all of us.

The Chamber’s goals are to assist these businesses and to make sure that good jobs are created, and preserved in Dougherty County and our surrounding area. We are currently working to enhance our annual programming to bring additional value and visibility to our community and provide more opportunities for our members.

It is a privilege to be the President & CEO of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce. We have a dedicated staff that believes in what our Chamber is doing and what we will accomplish in the future. There is no limit to what our Chamber can do and how effective we can be in our program of work. We are here for the long term, please join us and enjoy the ride!!

• Flint Fest vendor applications have gone out, the CVB will be assisting with the international entertainment.

• CVB has assisted with getting the overflow hotel bids for the Georgia Throwdown Music Festival. We will also assist with distributing information to prospective visitors.

• Albany Marathon and Half Marathon registration launched July 17 and we have 25 registered.

• Janice Marshall from Marshall Travel Consulting came to make a presentation on “How to Ensure the Success of the Albany CVB”, she shared best practices of successful CVB’s

and Chamber’s throughout the southeast and how we might model their success.

• CVB hosted travel writer Eleanor McDaniel August 9-12.

• We hosted a site visit for the Regional GA Municipal Clerks Conference August 17.

• CVB attended the Georgia Firefighters Conference in Dalton August 23-25 to share information on Albany and what they can look forward to as their next host city in 2013.

• Assisted 30 events with CVB services.

How We Promoted Albany • Participated in the joint press conference with Recreation & Parks, Thronateeska, and Flint RiverQuarium.

• WWOW vacation package promoted through facebook, twitter, newsletter, email blast, and lead requests. Resulted in 8 packages sold, last year none were sold.
