COMMENTS FROM THE 2016 CHAIRMAN The 10th Annual Snickers Marathon and Half Marathon was the best yet -- a great new logo, perfect weather, almost 1,600 runners, and most of all tons of enthusiastic volunteers who we can’t thank enough. First I’d like to give a huge thank you to Rashelle Beasley and her staff at the Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau. They outdid themselves. The CVB staff started working on the 2016 marathon the minute the 2015 marathon finished. They put in countless hours to make this event possible for the runners and the community.

More work goes into the marathon than any of us can imagine, and as I mentioned, volunteers are a crucial part of making this massive event a success. More than 1,700 volunteers worked as road marshals, manned water stations and the finish line, as well as numerous other positions before, during and after the run. Their smiling faces and enthusiasm were the talk of the runners and gave numerous participants the capacity to make it to the finish line. I would be remiss not to mention the Mardi Gras which drew a crowd of almost 35,000 people. This event gave Southwest Georgia residents, as well as the runners and their families and friends, the opportunity to enjoy music, food and just good old fashion fun in Downtown Albany.
The Snickers Marathon and the Mardi Gras not only gave the runners and their families an opportunity to see our great community and enjoy our talented performers, it put dollars back into our businesses. Our hotels were booked, our restaurants were filled, and our retail shops were busy. All this translates to millions of dollars being spent at our local businesses and more tax dollars going back into Albany and Dougherty County. Congratulations to Rashelle again for her appointment as vice president of the Georgia Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors. She will serve a two-year term and become the board’s president in 2019. Rashelle will have a greater impact in developing and promoting tourism initiatives statewide. Her appointment will also mean good things for Albany and for the Plantation Trace region as a whole. 10th Annual
Snickers Marathon and Half Marathon
There was a been-there, done-that spirit in the air as the hundreds and hundreds of volunteers prepared for the 10th running of the Snickers® Marathon and Half Marathon on March 5. Moments after the gun sounded, sending almost 1,600 runners on their way over the 13.1-mile and 26.2-mile courses, a group was seen casually setting things up at the race finish line in Riverfront Park, a couple of hundred yards away from the starting line adjacent to the Albany Civic Center. There was no sense of urgency, no rush to get things in place. An observer would have to make a couple of assumptions: 1) That these folks knew what they were doing, and 2) they’d done it before. Race Director Rashelle Beasley with the Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau admitted as much as she ladled out praise for the volunteers two days after the race. Still barely able to speak above a hoarse croak, Beasley offered the ultimate praise for the more than 1,700 registered volunteers who lent a hand during the preparations for and running of the race.

“The Snickers Marathon and Half Marathon would not happen without these volunteers,” Beasley said. “They’re vital, they’re irreplaceable. But it’s more than the work they do. It’s the way they go out of their way to be hospitable, welcoming. “The main thing I hear from runners every year, especially the ones who come from other states, is that the people here do everything they can to make them feel welcome. They’re amazed at the volunteers they encounter along the race course — the people in various neighborhoods who shout encouragement, the ones who set up the water stations, the ones lined up near the finish line, and the ones who congratulate them and take care of their needs at the end of the race.” Beasley pauses for a brief moment. “Those volunteers are the best of Albany,” she says. Those volunteers are a microcosm of the community: high school club members, Turner Job Corps students, ROTC and JROTC cadets from local high schools and Albany State University, Procter & Gamble employees, dozens of Marines from the Albany-based Logistics Base, city of Albany and Dougherty County employees, civic organization members, groups of friends who want to help shine a positive light on the community.

“You guys here in Albany know how to make folks feel welcome,” 61-yearold half-marathon runner Rebecca Lear Williams of Napa, California said after completing the race. “We have family here in Albany, so when we found out about the marathon my son and I decided to fly in. I got him into running, so we decided to have a little
“You guys here in Albany know how to make folks feel welcome.” Rebecca Lear Williams Napa, California mini-family reunion around the race.” Williams’ son, 45-year-old William Lear, who lives at Bethel Island, California, a short distance from mom Rebecca and step-dad Lee Williams, said highlights of the Snickers experience had been equal parts athletic accomplishment, family reunification and good ole Southern hospitality. “A lot of us hadn’t seen each other in 15, 20 years,” Lear said as a gaggle of cousins came by to congratulate him and Williams for completing the halfmarathon. “The course here is fast; trust me, training for the San Francisco
Marathon — which goes over the Golden Gate Bridge — is all about the hills. It’s flat here and fast. I ran my best time. “And as great as that felt, what felt better was reconnecting with family and having all these people in Albany make everyone feel so welcome. This has been a great experience for all of us.” Thirty-one-year-old stay-at-home mom Emily Portnoy of Atlanta offered a similar assessment after finishing the race. Portnoy had run the Boston Marathon while she was five months pregnant with now-18-month-old son Preston, and she ran the famed Boston race again eight month after giving birth to the toddler. She and hubby Josh Portnoy, an attorney, came to Albany for the first time after learning of its reputation as one of the 10 top qualifiers for the Boston Marathon. “We came for the race’s reputation, but what we discovered after we got here is that this is just a great community,” Emily Portnoy said. “We arrived in Albany on Thursday, and our hotel here (the downtown Hilton Garden Inn) is just wonderful. We went out and had a nice dinner Thursday evening, and everything was excellent. “The weather’s perfect, the people here are amazing and everything is just so well-organized. This whole experience … it couldn’t have been better.”

The race was also memorable for medical student Chris Zablocki, who is attending the American University of the Caribbean, but for a different reason. In his third run in Albany, Zablocki won the marathon with a blistering time of 2:18.50. Even emcee Jaxon Riley, who’s become the unofficial spokesperson for the marathon, was in rare form for the 10th anniversary of the Snickers event. He rattled off his usual race patter, including calling out the names and hometowns of runners as they crossed the finish line, while decked out in a black tux, complete with red bow tie. “This has just become a magical event over the years,” Riley (whose non-working name is Rodney Rouse) said. “The negative people who say only bad things about Albany need to come out to the marathon. When they see all

these volunteers making the runners feel welcome, they’d come to know that, yes, people in Albany do love their community.” Riley said he’s happy to add even a sidenote to runners’ experiences in Albany. “If I can be a part of saying or doing anything to help make this memorable for these runners, I’m all for it,” the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame nominee said. “Of course, over the years it’s been pretty memorable in its own right. There are all of those people who come here to qualify for the Boston Marathon, putting us on a pretty cool national stage. “And there was the time that these guys ran while under a tornado warning and watch. What great bragging rights: ‘Yeah, I got to run a marathon in a tornado.’ And it happened right here in our community.”

Mardi Gras Brings 35,000 People to Downtown Albany
As vendors put the finishing touches on their booths and the smoke from a half-dozen grills filled the air in anticipation of the March 5 Mardi Gras celebration in downtown Albany, event organizer Tommy Gregors offered a little history lesson. “Yes, things have changed with Mardi Gras,” Gregors, who is head man of both the Thronateeska Heritage Center and the Flint RiverQuarium, said. “We have a different crowd now than we had 15 years ago when we started. Back then, we had Harvest Moon and another couple of places downtown that kept many in the crowd there well past midnight. “Now, as downtown has changed, so has the crowd that comes out for Mardi Gras. We made a decision to have the last musical act finish up at 8:30, and I think the people are OK with that. People who want to party on into the night can enjoy the music and the activities downtown, then head over to west Albany or east Albany after things are over. It’s just a different event now.” Revelers may have had to adapt to the “new” Mardi Gras celebration as it transitioned from its location on the 200 block of West Broad Avenue to the 100 and 200 blocks of Pine Avenue — and to the emphasis on more family fun than the rowdy debauchery typically associated with the New Orleans-inspired festival — but one thing has remained constant about Albany’s Mardi Gras. It’s still one of the city’s most anticipated and enjoyed events. “We come for Mardi Gras every year,” Milton Reese of

Dawson said as he watched his 4-year-old nephew, Bralen Pickett, take on the water ride challenge adjacent to the RiverQuarium. “We come for the food — love the food — but there are so many fun things here for the kids. “I think it’s good that the city of Albany puts on such a positive event.” A crowd estimated at 35,000 crammed its way onto Pine Avenue on a glorious Saturday afternoon and evening, dancing to and enjoying music by the likes of the Evergreen Family Band, the Bo Henry Band, Southern Arts Musical Ensemble, Trae Pierce & the T Stone Band, Unbreakable Bloodline and Relapse. Everyone munched down on fried Oreos, sausage dogs, funnel cakes and other gastronomical favorites, and pet owners showed off their best friends during the annual Pet Parade. “This is her first year coming to Mardi Gras, but she hasn’t worked up the courage to get on the jumpy houses yet,” Eric Grigg of Albany said as he walked hand-in-hand with 2year-old daughter Emmaree Grigg. “But she loves seeing all the dogs walking around and she’s crazy about music. We’re working our way up to the stage so she can get a closer look.” One and 1/2-year-old Dalyn Turner was also taking in his first Mardi Gras celebration with mom Tiarrah Turner. “This is great for him; it definitely gave us something different to do this weekend,” Tiarrah Turner said. “The weather is nice, and there are all kinds of things to keep his attention. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.” Not a bad way, indeed.

“There’s Only One Albany” Book Launch Party

The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce unveiled its 2016 quality of life book, “There's Only One Albany,” at a launch party that celebrated the publication, which tells the story of the Albany area through amazing pictures and compelling stories that highlight what makes the region unique. “ 'There's Only One Albany' is a theme that's been running throughout our community and it's been a powerful motivator, really a catalyst for change in Albany,” said Bàrbara Rivera Holmes, president and CEO of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce. “Through this book, we continue to promote that message, which is about unity, about rediscovering what makes Albany special and about embracing the community.” Each guest received a book to take home. The publication's cover story features musician Phillip Phillips and his wife, Hannah, who, in a first-person account, share with readers the reasons they love Albany and why they've made their hometown their permanent home base. Partygoers were treated to a 'Taste of Albany,' with local fare from Austins Firegrill & Oyster Bar; Blackbeards; Carter's Grill & Restaurant; Cookie Shoppe; Harvest Moon; and Pearly's Famous Country Cooking. Albany Delegation Travels to Washington D.C.
A delegation of Albany area civic and business leaders traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit with federal officials and share some of the community’s recent successes and to further strengthen relationships with those on Capitol Hill and at the Pentagon. The Washington, D.C., Fly In, a yearly event, is organized by the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, and gives local leadership an opportunity to meet with federal policy makers and gives local leaders the opportunity to talk about

issues that have an impact both nationally and locally. The trip also gave the delegation a chance to meet with leaders at the Pentagon and discuss the relationship Albany and Dougherty County has with Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) Albany and the other base tenants. ‘Let’s Put Albany On the Map With Google’ Lunch and Learn The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce offered a free lunch and learn to members entitled “Let’s Put Albany On the Map With Google.” Heather Sharpe, a business consultant for the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center in Albany, facilitated the infomative, sold out event. “Let’s Put Albany on the Map” is part of Google’s Get Your Business Online program and aims to bring community members, business owners, and civic leaders together to help small businesses succeed on the web. Google’s Get Your Business Online program helps businesses control the details displayed in Google searches such as hours, location, review and images.

Ambassador Luncheon
Ambassadors serve as the welcome arm of the Chamber, welcoming new members and promoting member involvement. Ambassadors represent the chamber at ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, Star Business of the Week and networking events such as Business After Hours and Rise N Shine Breakfasts. Ambassadors help the chamber build powerful relationships within the business community as well as building valuable relationships for their own businesses. The community will no longer see the green jackets as the Albany Area Chamber ambassadors are now dawning navy blue blazers. Ambassadors now receive points for the activities in which they participate. Each quarter, ambassadors will be honored with a luncheon and the “Ambassador of the Quarter” will be announced. Blackbeards hosted the first luncheon during which Joanne Jasper was named the “Ambassador of the Quarter” for the first quarter of 2016. Adele Brown, Karen Luthman and Jimmy West also received accolades for their service. The finale of the luncheon was a drawing for the centerpieces donated by Way’s House of Flowers. Albany State University Breaks Ground on New Fine Arts Building
Albany State University held a formal groundbreaking ceremony for a new Fine Arts Center on April 12. University administrators, local officials and state officials shoveled dirt to signify the start of construction for the 80,000 square-foot Fine Arts Center. The facility will be located on the upper campus, between the Billy C. Black Building and Residence Hall 5. The $25.1 million structure is expected to open fall 2017.

CVB UPDATE Snickers® Marathon & Half Marathon – March 5 – 1575 Registered; 1270 Finished; 23% Qualified for Boston Marathon Albany ranked number one. See story on page 8. The Albany CVB hosted the City of Albany Downtown Bike Race April 23-24. There were more than 200 registrations for the full weekend.
Hosted the inagual Flint River Roll in partnership with Downtown Albany and the Pecan City Pedalers. CVB hosted the family reunion workshop with over 80 in attendance April 30, 2016 Katie Corley finished her first year of Marketing College and Teresa Smith finished her third year and will graduate in the Spring of 2017 with her Travel Marketing Professional (TMP) certification. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO I’ll never forget how inspired I felt the first time I volunteered at the finish line of what is now the SNICKERS® Marathon and Half Marathon in Albany. I placed race medals around athletes of all capabilities and ages, and thought, “I can do this.” And I did, numerous times. These days, the joy of the event for me isn’t in crossing the finish line; it’s in seeing how our community comes together to support residents and visitors alike, and how much people who are meeting Albany for the first time enjoy their time in our city. The first weekend in March is a powerful testimony to who we are as a community, and who we can be when we allow ourselves to open up. But it’s not all about feelings. The SNICKERS® Marathon and Half Marathon, which this year celebrated its 10th anniversary, has an economic impact of $600,000. It draws thousands of runners and their supporters from near and far (42 states and 5 countries, to be specific) to Albany, where they purchase hotel stays, dine in our restaurants, fill up at the gas stations, shop our small and large businesses and visit our quality attractions. Through the power of social media, the impact of the Snickers race extends well beyond Bàrbara Rivera Holmes those who are in town to experience it. True story: The Friday of the marathon I saw a post President and CEO from a high school friend who was praising Albany for its beauty, its friendliness and its sense of community. This is someone I haven’t seen since high school, and who I had no idea until that moment was running the race. I saw him at the finish line that Saturday. Two days later, he and his running club were back in Florida and celebrating – with their medals and Snickers Marathon running shirts – the incredible experience they had in Albany. And again, it was on social media for all the world to see. The Snickers Marathon is the largest and most complex event that the Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau organizes each year. The CVB team, led by Rashelle Beasley, puts the same effort into all its initiatives, and in 2014 facilitated $221 million in tourism-related economic impact for Albany. As a community, we don’t have to wait until the first weekend in March to take pride in our home, to experience all it offers and to make good and lasting impressions on our visitors; that opportunity is afforded to us daily.
