Summer Camps

Refer a Family! Any family whose child attended a summer program in 2018 and refers a new family that registers for camp will be credited $25 per registered referral toward their 2019 summer program registration fee. New families will be prompted during online registration to list one family who referred them. Pass the word to your neighbors and friends about our summer programs. Director of Summer Programs: Karin Epstein

Mrs. Epstein was appointed to the full time position as Director of Summer Programs in 2012. In this role she also supports outreach initiatives for the Office of Admissions and Marketing. Prior to being named Director, Mrs. Epstein taught a variety of grade levels at The Albany Academy Lower School for 18 years and was the Director of the LEAP program for nine years. Mrs. Epstein holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Cortland and a Masterâ€™s Degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Oneonta.

Little LEAP & Jr. LEAP Little LEAP

Jr. LEAP

Little LEAP provides a creative, nurturing and enriching environment. Campers will enjoy their summer while reinforcing and building a foundation of social and academic skills. Weekly activities are theme based and will include literature, math, science, art, world language and music. Although the summer is more relaxed, students will be challenged and the skills that have been introduced during their school year will be reinforced in many fun ways.

Jr. LEAP, our program for grades one and two, is modeled after our popular LEAP camp. Campers will enjoy their summer while reinforcing and building social and academic skills. Weekly activities will be theme based and will include language arts, math, science, music and art. Campers will spend the day with the classroom teacher rotating through a variety of activities. During the weeks of July 1-August 9, Jr. LEAP will have a special area teacher daily for world language and sports.

Entering Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten

Entering Grades 1 & 2

Campers must be four years old prior to attending the program and have had previous child care experience. Campers are required to be fully toilet trained and capable of caring for bathroom and dressing needs independently.

Little LEAP & Jr. LEAP

Daily swim instruction ( July 1-August 9) provided by an experienced aquatics director and certified lifeguards will take place in our indoor swimming pool. Students will participate in free swim during the non-instruction weeks. Swimmer to lifeguard ratios will be consistent at all times as mandated by the Department of Health guidelines. There will not be swimming the week of August 12. Special outdoor water activities will be planned for campers to enjoy that week. The Little LEAP & Jr. LEAP programs and Extended Day will be located on the Albany Academy for Girls campus. Campers will be escorted across the street to The Albany Academy for swimming and lunch.

Join us for a week or the entire summer! Children are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and the weeks fill up quickly.

Directors: Kathy Polubinski and Laura Stevens

Kathy Polubinski recently retired as the Preschool teacher at The Albany Academies where she taught since its inception in 1998. Prior to this position, she worked at The Albany Academy as the Assistant Director of the Extended Day Program and First Grade teacher. Mrs. Polubinski holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from Rhode Island College. Laura Stevens has been teaching at The Albany Academies since 1998 where she currently teaches Pre-Kindergarten. She has also taught in the Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms. She has worked in our Extended Day Program and as a teacher in our LEAP program. Mrs. Stevens graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She then attended SUNY Albany and obtained her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Literacy.

LEAP LEAP (Learning Enrichment Activities Program) Entering Grades 3-8

This unique and very popular camp is a *two week, full-day program. Students design their own daily schedule and participate in five classes of their interest. Choices include areas of academics, world language, visual arts, performing arts, sports, technology and adventure. Courses are taught by classroom teachers with that particular expertise and are assisted by enthusiastic summer counselors. To create your child’s schedule, the class charts and descriptions are available on The Albany Academies website. During online registration, you will select the five classes to create the campers’ individualized schedule. Should a class reach capacity, during online registration you may choose to be placed on a waitlist. Director: Ann DiBiase Ann DiBiase has been affiliated with LEAP since 1985. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from The College of Saint Rose. She taught in The Albany Academy Lower School for five years and after receiving her Master’s Degree in Reading from SUNY Albany, she returned to The Academy as a teacher in the LEAP program. Mrs. DiBiase became the Assistant Director in 2009 and Director in 2012. Musical Theater Musical Theater: Seussical Jr. Entering Grades 4-9

Welcome to The Albany Academies Musical Theater Camp! Staffed with experienced actors, directors and technicians, this fastpaced rehearsal process will culminate on the last day of camp with a matinée dress rehearsal for the other camps and a Friday evening performance of Seussical Jr. Along the way, students will participate in several workshops that address both performance and technical aspects of theater. In addition to being cast in the show, each student will have the opportunity to create an audition binder complete with a resume, sheet music and an 8 X 10 headshot to prepare them for future auditions. Matthew Streifert has been teaching at The Albany Academies since 2005. He teaches theater, general music and chorus in the Lower, Middle & Upper School divisions. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with a concentration in Vocal Performance from SUNY Albany and an M.M. in Music Education from Boston University. When he’s not at work, Mr. Streifert can often be found on stage performing in musicals with local theater companies. Two Week Session:

NEW! Adventures in Art NEW! Adventures in Art Entering Grades 4-5 & 6-8

Join us on an art adventure! Campers will spend the week exploring a variety of art materials, projects and techniques. Campers will create, celebrate, learn and thrive using their artistic creativity. This camp will introduce campers to familiar materials which will be used in a whole new way! We will mix it up using paint, markers, pastels, tissue paper, cardboard, Model Magic and fibers. Projects will include bookmaking, mixed media, painting, drawing, sewing, paper weaving and mask making just to name a few! Join us and spend the week exploring your inner artist! Angela Cuozzo has over 25 years of corporate graphic design experience, creating marketing materials in media, manufacturing, higher ed and nonprofits. In 2017 she launched her own art and design business to pursue projects that would allow more creative expression and the opportunity to once again work with more traditional art materials she loved so much as an art student pursuing her B.S. in Visual Arts from SUNY New Paltz. Recently, Mrs. Cuozzo taught art at The Albany Academies as a long term substitute and found a new passion in working with children, encouraging them to express their creativity in visual arts. She continues to work as a substitute teacher at The Albany Academies while maintaining a steady client-base with her design business. Leave your artistic mark at The Albany Academies during our newly created Mural Masterpiece program! Murals are colorful, dramatic and attention grabbing works of art that allow for a rewarding team project experience. The Leading Edge The Leading Edge Entering Grades 9 & 10

What does it take to prepare for college and for a job? Are you resilient enough to handle what life throws at you? Join us for two weeks of leadership training, service and fun as campers explore the connections between psychology, sociology, social action and community. Each day campers will challenge themselves to become more effective leaders through team building games, problem solving and by practicing professional skills (resume writing, building a strong college application, etc.). At the core of leadership is our daily experience serving the local community - including Ronald McDonald House, Beth Emeth Albany, and The Albany Academies. Hone your skills, connect to community and change the world! Director: Matthew Essery Matthew Essery has been teaching middle and high school science for almost twenty years. He currently teaches biology and anatomy and has been teaching middle and high school science for almost twenty years. He currently teaches AP biology and Anatomy & Physiology at The Albany Academies. In addition, Mr. Essery has developed leadership programs for teens and run counselor training programs in several camps throughout the Northeast. He received a Bachelorâ€™s Degree in Biology with a concentration in secondary education from Houghton College and a Master of Science in Secondary Education from Mount Saint Mary College. When he is not teaching, he can often be found hiking the Adirondacks, the Catskills, or going for a run along the Hudson River.

Science Academy Robotics & 3D Printing Science Academy-Robotics/3D Printing Entering Grades 6-8

Located in our Borisenok Family Science Center at Albany Academy for Girls, this co-ed, all-day program will teach you the basics of design through the constuction and programming of VEX-style robots to complete a series of challenges. We will take advantage of 3D modeling to design custom robot parts and accessories. We will then print your designs on our large 3D printer. Expect to be challenged and to have fun as we explore these exciting fields! Parents will be invited to our Robotics Challenge the last Thursday of the session. Instructors:Walter Keeley & Bo Buran Walter Keeley has taught physics at the high school level since 2004. He has been at The Albany Academies since 2009 and involved with the Upper Schoolâ€™s FTC Robotics teams for the past eight seasons. Mr. Keeley received his AB in physics from Wabash College and his MAT from Earlham College. Bo Buranhas been the Science Department Chair at The Albany Academies since 2006. Over the last 30 years he has taught chemistry, biology, physics, computers and math at the high school level. With a Biochemistry degree from Bowdoin College Mr. Buran is currently teaching Chemistry and AP Chemistry at The Academies. Rocketry Camp Rocketry Camp Entering Grades 5-9

We are excited to continue launching a co-ed Rocketry Camp to be held in our Borisenok Family Science Center at Albany Academy for Girls. Join us for a week or two! Each week will consist of two small launches testing specific variables. Each Friday parents will be invited to watch the rockets we build launch into the sky. These programs are designed to grab the interest of campers new to rocketry as well as challenge those with prior experience including campers who attended last summer! Week One-How it all Started Week One will take an exciting in depth look at rockets. We will study the modern history of rocketry and the Science behind rockets. We will work on individual and group projects. One project will entail designing and making a rocket to carry a raw egg with the goal of it returning in one piece! Week Two-Planet Discoveries Join us for another exciting week of rocketry. We will research the discoveries made from satellites on the planets, dwarf planets and so much more. We will work on both individual and group rockets with emphasis in designing finless rockets from scratch. Director: Bob Neudel Mr. Neudel has been teaching middle school science at the Academy since 1987. He has conducted several workshops for teachers at both STANYS and NSTA including bringing Rocketry into the classroom. LEAPS & Bounds Adventure Camp LEAPS & Bounds Adventure Camp Entering Grades 7-8 & 9-10

LEAPS & Bounds continues challenging campers with outdoor adventures in the surrounding areas of the capital region. This co-ed adventure camp encourages advanced thinking, problem-solving and a life-long love of learning and adventure seeking in the great outdoors. Join us for a week and get ready for more adventure than you thought was possible! The first week of Adventure Camp for grades 7-8 will challenge campers at Adirondack Extreme Adventure Course in Bolton Landing. We will also drift down the lazy river tubing with Beaver Brook Outfitters. The second week of Adventure Camp for grades 9-10 will test camper’s courage on Class III+ white water rapids. Our rafting adventure down the Hudson River will be complete with picnic lunch and dinner through Beaver Brook Outfitters. Both weeks will test camper’s endurance with day-long hiking. Our trips will be complete with the reward of stunning panoramic views of the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. These trips will include moderate difficulty level hiking which will require appropriate mountain hiking footwear, hydration, backpack and attire. No matter rain or shine, each day’s adventure will bring a new challenge to employ outdoor skills in a fresh, fun and imaginative way! *Please Note: It is imperative that students are able to understand and follow all safety instructions. This camp requires students to have swimming skills and the ability to participate in physically demanding outdoor activities. There will be a mandatory swim test administered to all campers at the start of each week. Director: Caroline DuVernoy-Tobler Caroline Tobler is currently the Lower School Science teacher at The Albany Academies where she has taught since 2011. Mrs. Tobler has a love of nature and all that the outdoors has to offer! Her love for hiking stems from her family vacation spot in the Adirondacks. Every summer she hikes around the Schroon Lake area. She has now extended this tradition and enjoys hiking new mountains in her spare time. Mrs. Tobler has hiked many mountains throughout the Adirondack and Catskill region. She looks forward to sharing her appreciation for the outdoors with our Leaps & Bounds campers for the third year! Classic Day & Adventures in Sports Classic Day Camp Entering Grades 3-8

Classic Day Camp offers a variety of educational and recreational activities in a safe and caring environment. Campers will have the opportunity to rotate throughout a variety of structured activities during the day. Activities will include arts & crafts, sports, team building, science experiments, theme days and much more. There will also be free play outdoors each day. All campers will cool off daily with free swim in our indoor pool that will be supervised by an experienced, certified aquatics director as well as certified lifeguards. (Please note-there will not be swimming the week of August 12) Director: Zach Nelson A graduate of The Albany Academy, Zach Nelson has been a high school math teacher at The Albany Academy since 2014. Mr. Nelson is a graduate of St. Lawrence University with a Masterâ€™s Degree from The University of Massachusetts at Lowell. This will be his 9th year working for The Albany Academies Summer Program. Mr. Nelson will also direct the Extended Day program throughout a majority of the summer.

Adventures in Sports Entering Grades 4-8

If you are all about sports ALL day then this co-ed camp is for you! We will run the gamut from classic games like basketball, tennis, soccer and volleyball to team games like flag football, kickball and tennis baseball. You will also learn some backyard games like Bocce, Horseshoes, Corn Hole and Ladder Ball. All campers will cool off daily with free swim in our indoor pool that will be supervised by an experienced, certified aquatics director as well as certified lifeguards. Sprint, jump, hop, leap and kick your way into registering for these weeks of SPORTS fun! Summer Camps 2019 Registration: Register online at www.albanyacademies.org . Visa, Discover, Amex, MC and pay by check are accepted. Half the cost of camp is due upon registration. Payment in full is due May 1, 2019. Cancellation Policy: If you choose to cancel registration prior to June 1, 2019, please submit request in writing. You will receive the full refund of the tuition minus a $50 cancellation fee. If registration is cancelled after June 1, 2019, you will forfeit 50% of the program tuition. Children absent from camp will not be entitled to refund or exchange of dates. Discounts: A discount will be given to individual campers who attend a total of four or more weeks as follows: 4 weeks $25, 5 weeks $50, 6 weeks $80, 7 weeks $110, 8 weeks $140 & 9 weeks $170. Health Forms: Health history will be filled out during online registration. New campers, 2018 campers entering grade seven or eight, and any campers with updated immunizations must submit their current immunization record. Students who currently attend The Albany Academies and campers who attended camp in 2018 do not need to submit records. Lunch: Lunch and a healthy morning snack of fruit are provided. Little LEAP/Jr. LEAP and students attending Extended Day will also have an afternoon snack. Our camp is nut sensitive. Products containing nuts will not be served on campus. The lunch menu is available on our website. Discipline Policy: The Albany Academies reserve the right to dismiss any camper whose behavior interferes with the rights or safety of others or functioning of the group or activity.
