The vision for the new wellness and vocational center for young women is to establish a care centre that encourages social relations and a sense of community to empower these adolescents ages 1217 to speak up about their abuse. Through healing spaces that encourage expression, meditation, and communication, users will feel best suppor ted and more motivated to create futures for themselves – making the vocational aspect of the facility more effective in providing livelihood and education to eager l earners.

WhyThis Approach?

Fear, Shame, Pain, and Cultural and Religious reasons all contribute to the common reasons for not disclosing sexual assault.

The vulnerability of children can be explained by different factors such as pover ty, the influence of alcohol or drugs, genderbased inequalities, the way parents consider their children as proper ty, not free, and cannot have opinions or rights, and the lack of sex education.

Key Concept: ‘Children Dimension’.

The children dimension is created using various physical shapes, colors and symbols materialized from delicately curved lines and deliberately avoids the perfect geometric forms. This brings a sense of freedom to the young users’ experience of the space. These curvilinear lines are calculated to correspond with children’s body proportion, creating a built environment that truly accommodates children’s behaviors and preferences.

Maslow’s Theory: Through careful consideration of the degrees of enclosure, the clear separation between public and private through curved walls are fulfilling the second level of Maslow’s 5-tier pyramid -- safety.

Acoustics is addressed by utilizing buffer spaces, such as closets and corridors, between noisy spaces and by minimizing furniture placement on shared walls.

Hospital can be accessed from 3 entry points: 2 public, 1 service entrance. A fun and engaging access to the hospital is created through the use of a swirly slide. The waiting area of each clinic is designed into a playground. Minimal use of furniture also compels children to play and run around the waiting areas of the hospital simulating a real ‘play’ environment.

Ceiling articulation through circular shaped lighting adds visual interest and serves as wayfinding. The use of indirect light with all the hallways of the hospital ensures that the young patients won’t be disturbed by the discomfort of excessive brightness.

Key Concept: ‘Form of Care’.

Nexus8 is a traumatology and physiotherapy clinic that user’s fully experience from the atmospheric design, questioning “The form of care”, in order to seek new unexplored paths of healthcare architecture. The strategy of this atmospheric architecture proposes a multi-sensory and highly wrap-around clinic. This design enables metabolic architectures that rely on rehabilitation techniques based on the hormonal response of the human being. Rooms are characterized by the intensity, direction, and saturation of the light that users perceive depending on the space they are located in.

Maslow’s Theory: 80% of the space is open which means that people who are in the space are compelled to engage with the interior environment. There are places of social rest situated next to big public areas, to provide a feeling of security. Cellular polycarbonate walls are used. Due to its high light transmission up to 95%, this transparent sound barrier can substantially abate noise pollution while preserving visual views along the soundproofing barriers.

The clinic can be accessed from 2 entry points: 1 public, 1 secret entrance for doctors and patients. The clinic’s main access is located in the center of the premises. Making the waiting room and the reception operate as the main distributor. The secret entrance is concealed by string fringe to add variety in texture and is used for patients who feel uncomfortable entering the main entrance.

Ceilings are lower in order to heat and ventilate rooms efficiently since the patient will be naked in this space and that climatic attention is a much-needed requirement. These custom ceilings are irregularly shaped to match the dynamic composition and layout of the space. The ceilings are also backlighted with regulated light.

Child and Adolescent Mental Heal th Services Unit H O S P I TA L , H E A LT H C A R E I N T E R I O R S

Key Concept: ‘Coastal Environment’.

Interior design of a new Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services unit for 5-18 year olds at Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Children and Young People pushes expectations of healthcare environments. Directly informed by workshops with end-users, the scheme is a colourful, light-filled “third space”: neither hospital nor home, but a healing space with its own identity. This new architectural language promotes good mental health, establishing interior environments as a critical part of the healing toolkit.

Maslow’s Theory: A spectrum of levels of privacy and togetherness is utilised to create zones that range from communal activity and convivial conversation. Big sections of public spaces are broken up by semi-private spaces through nooks and corners that offer the opportunity for private conversation and to retreat without feeling isolated from others. Partitions are full height to maximize acoustical privacy.

Creating opportunities for privacy while ensuring staff can see patients at all times was an important part of the user-defined brief. Glass doors between the TV room allows people to look out into a courtyard and have quick access to nature.

The ceiling is pushed to create a ‘skylight’, adding light and height to the inpatient’s day room. Access to daylight through courtyards dispersed in the unit create multiple opportunities to be exposed to sunlight. Design Philosophy: Continuous Learning Landscape” The Längenfeldgasse Primary and Vocational School project, contains a novel combination of a 17-class Primary school (for children aged 6 to 10) and a vocational school, consisting of 23 classes (for students aged 15 to 19). The primary school meets all requirements of contemporary teaching thanks to its spatialpedagogical concept. It consists of four clusters, each with four to five educational rooms that are grouped around a learning landscape.

Maslow’s Theory: The use of doors and partitions allows educators to act as companions of small groups of children of various ages, from different classes. The building serves the purpose of acquiring knowledge and practices in many different ways -- each educational room has an appendix that can be used as a nest or an oasis of quietude. The large terrace is an important connective element, that serves as an emergency exit, and are designed in a way that will be fun for children to use, but also suitable for teaching outside.

Inner courtyards and cleverly placed floor-to-ceiling windows ensure a large amount of daylight and direct views to the outside, without feeling exposed. Inside, mirrors enhance the light and the outside views, creating a “continuous learning landscape” and a new spatial sensation. Using the exterior walls, the furniture doesn’t obstruct the incidence of daylight. A specially developed wall system provides an additional skylight with a light deflector above the shelves, flooding the inner space with daylight.

Maslow’s Theory: The vocational center is situated right across the medical rehabilitation block with the hostel and dining block serving as a transition space from the healing space and work space. The U-shape plan is designed to allow all the workshop space be semi-public while the central part is an open courtyard for activities and gathering. The U-Shape symbolises the turning point at the end of rehab journey for a new hope and a better future. The workshop spaces are compounded into one area that break into smaller spaces to create focus on a particular skill.

PROTECT AND RESTORE HABITAT

The project must preserve and protect at least 40% of the greenfield (undeveloped) area on the project site, if such an area exists. In addition, the project must restore 30% of the site to natural habitat using native and adapted plant species.

The project provides open space more than 30% of the total site area. And at least 25% of that open space is vegetated or have overhead vegetation.

RAINWATER MANAGEMENT

Mangrove roots collect the silt and sediment that tides carry in and rivers carry out towards the sea. By holding the soil in place, the trees stabilize shorelines against erosion. Seedlings that take root on sandbars help stabilize the sandbars over time

HEAT ISLAND REDUCTION

Parking lots and sidewalks next to site hold heat and reflect it back, raising the temperature of the surrounding environment. Which is why the site is protected with mangroves and trees to shade project areas.

Placing the facility close to the communities is important because locals do not have the means to commute very far. Site is located in close proximity to mangroves because local communities view living next to mangroves as desirable because of its ability to provide resources and livelihood.

94% are employed in Puerto Princesa but 22% are under employed because the majority’s highest level of educational attainment is elementary which causes the dependency ratio to increase up to 73.6% and causes the fertility rate to be 4.41.

SKITTISH. TIMID. BRAVE. CURIOUS It’s a common misperception that chameleons use their ability to instantly change color to camouflage themselves against a background. But chameleons will use bold color changes to communicate and depict their moods.

This concept envisions upholding the dignity and courage of young adolescents and removing the stigma of sexual abuse and the culture of silence.

Concept Narrative

The stigma of sexual assault is so ingrained in society that the culture of silence prolongs the healing. A chameleon challenges this culture of silence.

The term chameleon means on the ground lion. Its character manifests an adolescents character — skittish and timid, sneaky and curious, adventurous and brave. It’s in their nature to express their emotions through their colors and movement. These creatures move slowly, using one limb at a time mimicking the process a sur vivor takes when reentering and reintegrating back into society. Like any reptile, chameleon’s shed their scaly skin, signaling a second chance, renewal, and transformation.

This will be done through the use of bold and vibrant colors and cur ved lines and will then be transformed into shapes and forms that mimic a chameleon’s sly movement and cur vy figure. Varied textures from materiality create rhythm, much like their scales that create a cohesive and unique composition. The organic and fluid-like movement express the transformative and healing process. Concept Narrative

The emotional and mental healing process after sexual assault often goes unnoticed, and what is often given more attention is the end result. Inspired from the Philippines’ sobriquet as the Pearl of the Orient, a pearl is well-known for its natural beauty.

Pearls are given to a woman when she comes of age. It symbolizes a precious, dear-child. But beneath the sur face, it symbolizes much more. A pearl is resilient, adaptable, and headstrong. It forces itself to strive under adverse environments.

It is made by an irritant but not defined by it. Just like there are several layers to ever y stor y and layers to acceptance and healing, the formation of a pearl goes through a painful process involving many layers. A beautiful thing must go through grit. It symbolizes change, oftentimes this comes with setbacks creating a moldable and impressionable journey. Making each pearl unique in its luster and shape.

Lobby Lounge

Users are welcomed into the facility with a clean and crisp view of the lounge in the corridor that is defined by daylight and with view of the landscape outside as well as the view of the beach. Shades of yellows and greens contrast the ocean’s blues and add warmth into the space signalling a welcoming and friendly environment. The corridor also provides direct line of sight to the bistro and is also the bridge that connects the wellness and vocational wing in the facility. This transitional and reciving space is important to establish the transformative and healing process.

Bistro

The self-serve bistro serves as an ice breaker space and helps integrate the user into the community. The goal of the bistro is to make the user feel more comfortable and more open to receiving treatment. This space encourages autonomy as it urges the adolescent to mingle and take action for herself and meet new people. The seating in the center with an inner seating and outer seating gives users the option for intimate conversations, or more engaging ones. The central seat with the tree organizes the circulation of the space and serves as an identifiable landmark to help in wayfinding. Staff is easily accesbile with breakroom located at the back with a tinted window that overlooks entire bistro.

Art Corridor

The art corridor is the space that celebrates the works and craftsmanship of the users or adolescents. The space cannot be missed as it is adjacent to the bistro which allows them to reflect and contemplate on the artworks. The space is left simple to let the art speak for themselves. Vinyl wood flooring add warmth and the half-round wood panels wrapped in the curved walls add rhythm to the A nook is provided for rest and conversation.
