Bell makes final U18 roster After months of waiting and training camps, Fort St. John native Cassidy Bell found out Sunday she would play for Team BC at the 2015 National Women’s U18 Championship

Cassidy Bell sat in a room with 27 potential teammates last Sunday, unsure if there would be a trip to the 2015 National Women’s U18 Championship in her future.

She said it felt like a lifetime before the coaches came in and told the group they had made Team BC roster and Bell couldn’t believe it.

“Shock, that’s for sure, it was a pretty stressful last day,” the 17-year-old Fort St. John native said with a chuckle. “It was a long wait. It felt so long.”

Her worry was probably compounded by sitting out the third game of three that the team played over the weekend selection camp, especially considering the group she was sitting with in the stands that game were mostly players who got cut.

“I spent the last day sitting in the stands, wondering what the heck was going to happen,” she said.

“Actually all the girls that were sitting out where the ones that got caught, besides me and one that got hurt.”

And when the weekend started off on the wrong foot in her first game against UBC Thunderbirds, Bell knew she had some making up to do in her second appearance.

“My first game I didn’t play that good,” she said.

“After that game I was a wreck. I was completely nervous and I didn’t know how the rest of the weekend would go. The second was better, I felt like I

played the way I could.”

Bell will now have the opportunity of a lifetime and one she has always dreamed of on Nov. 4 when she will suit up for Team BC in Huntsville, Ont. and that fact still hasn’t quite sunk in yet.

“It’s going to be amazing, it’s going to be so cool and the environment is going to be,” she said on Thursday before pausing. “I can’t even put it into words.”

The defenseman doesn’t yet know how she’ll be deployed in the tournament and is willing to play anywhere but said on special teams she prefers the penalty kill.

“That’s kind of what the last two camps were about, drilling the systems into our heads,” she said.

“In practices I was put on the penalty kill and then they had the two power play units and so for the first game [at UBC] I was strictly penalty kill and then in the second game I ended up moving on to the power play unit. So I don’t know exactly what will happen. I prefer penalty kill, because I feel more relaxed on it.”

For the time being Bell will return to her Pacific Steelers’ team of the Junior Women’s Hockey League before rejoining her Team BC group for an Oct. 30 trip to Huntsville for a few practices before submitted photo taking on Manitoba in an exhibition game.

The team took part in two exhibition games this past weekend.

On the road in Valleyview Saturday, they fell 4-3 against Valleyview, but rebounded at home the next day with a 1-0 win over Dawson Creek.

In Saturday’s game against Valleyview, the Flyers got out to a 2-1 lead following the first period. Valleyview tied the game in the second, and came away with the victory after a late goal in the third.

Scoring for the Flyers were Jesse McArthur, Daniel Forrest, and Cooper Willms.

Their Sunday home opener was low scoring as the Flyers took the 1-0 victory in the third period with 8 seconds remaining.

Tim Rice got the goal.

This coming up weekend the team travels to Beaverlodge for a Friday night exhibition game, followed by a home game Saturday at noon against Dawson Creek.

FSJ Library starts new peer group for LGBTQ youth

The Fort St. John Public Library is kickstarting a new group to provide a safe spot for gay and lesbian youth in the city.

The group was set to hold its first meeting Thursday evening, for gay, lesbian, bisexual transgender, and queer teens in Grades 7 through 12 to meet and hang out.

Library director Kerry France said her organization is looking for gaps in service, and this “really stood out for us.”

“We know that the support in high school only reaches those in high schools,” she said.

“There are youth who are perhaps home

schooled, rural children, youths who are no longer in school. We do know that bullying is a big problem, and we have been approached by several parents who have become frustrated with not being able to find support for their children.”

The group will meet the first Thursday of every month, or more if the interest is there, France said.

“We provide a safe place... a place for these kids to gather and be surrounded by others who have similar life experiences,” said France. reporter@ahnfsj.ca

Compression stockings Compression stockings are used to relieve symptoms of venous insufficiency and to help prevent related complications. It is important, first and foremost, to understand the difference between compression stockings and support stockings. Support stockings are only used as a preventive measure when one’s legs feel heavy or tired, whereas compression stockings have a therapeutic effect. They exert pressure on the leg veins and help blood flow back towards the heart. They reduce pain, slow disease progression and delay the onset of complications.

Compression stockings are divided into 4 different categories, based on the level of compression they exert: • Class 1 - 20 to 30 mmHg • Class 2 - 30 to 40 mmHg • Class 3 - 40 to 50 mmHg • Class 4 - 50 to 60 mmHg Support stockings usually exert about 15 to 20 mmHg of pressure.

Class 3 and 4 stockings are mainly reserved for more severe cases of venous insufficiency.

When to wear them Unless told otherwise, it is not recommended to wear these stockings continuously.

Furthermore, it is pointless to wear them when exercising or lying down, since venous return is usually not an issue in these situations.

Wearing them when sitting or standing for prolonged periods is what is most important.

They are particularly beneficial for people with occupations that require them to stand in one position (hairdresser, sales associate, nurse), or who travel long distances by car, train or plane, for example.

Choosing the right stocking The following measurements should be taken by a specialist before you purchase your stockings: the circumference of the foot at its thickest point, the circumference of the heel, of the thigh and of the knee, as well as the distance between the crotch and the ground.

The discomfort associated with wearing

compression stockings is most often the result of ill-fitting or ill-adjusted stockings. Although you may be somewhat bothered when you first start wearing your stockings, they will soon bring you some relief and begin to feel more comfortable.

The level of compression best suited for your needs should be determined by your doctor, and will be based on your medical condition.

How to put them on To make putting on your stockings as easy as possible and to maximize their effectiveness, it is recommended that you put them on as soon as you get up in the morning. You may find it easier to wear rubber gloves when putting them on as they will give you more gripping power. Be careful not to damage your stockings with jewellery, watches and long nails.

Here are some step by step tips on how to put on your compression stockings: 1. Lie down and lift your leg 2. Fold the top half of the sock down to the heel 3. Slide your foot into the sock to the heel 4. Roll the folded top half back up towards the ankle, then up the rest of the leg without pulling 5. Adjust the sock with the palm of your hand, without pulling 6. Make sure there are no folds If you find it difficult to unroll the stocking, put some talcum powder on your foot and leg before putting on the stocking. Special accessories are also available to help you put on your compression stockings.

Care Instructions Hand wash your stockings with a mild soap and hang them to dry. Machine washing and drying is not recommended.

A Year in Review Hey everyone! Guess what? The new 4-H year starts next month! However, this year was pretty busy, so here are the highlights in case you missed anything: November 27th – Annual General Meeting where everyone who wanted to be a part of the club came and elected leadership.

December 21st – Christmas party with snack board games and fun with friends!

February 21st – Club communications where everyone brought in their educational display or speech or demo.

March 21st – Fun Night and Auction put on with Green Valley 4-H, who provided the beef on a bun supper.

April 18th – Regional Communications where the top competitors from clubs around the region competed.

May 23rd – Club Judging Rally with a potluck supper and playing in the dugout.

Needing a victory to avoid playoff elimination, defending Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick came through with a dominating performance Sunday at Dover International Speedway.

Harvick cruised to victory, leading 355 of a possible 400 laps, to win the AAA 400. It was the Round 1 elimination race for the Chase for the Cup playoffs. Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jamie McMurray and Aric Almirola completed the top-five finishers. “We were on the verge of being down and out for this one and to be able to pull this off is just one of those moments that you enjoy,” Harvick said. “I told people before this, this is a lot of fun to be in these situations and succeed. When you don’t succeed it’s not near as much fun, but winning makes everything extra special.”

It seems like the shot is either a flub shot or we will send the chip screaming past the hole. With the proper setup and technique, you should be able to master a shot that is quite difficult to accomplish. The first step in a proper chip shot is to open you stance up at your feet and your shoulders. Place the ball back a bit in your stance, because you are going to go from a high backswing down to the ball in a quick amount of time, resulting in a descending blow. One of the last keys to remember is that you do not want to have a huge followthrough once you make contact with the ball. Having a short and low followthrough will provide the right amount of contact to make a good shot more times than not.
