Rotary Club of Shrewsbury GUEST SPEAKERS – Hilary Knight & Ruth Brown
Hilary Knight (left) with President Pat McLaughlin and Ruth Brown At the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury luncheon on 6 July 2016, our first meeting of President Pat's year, we heard two ladies speak from Age UK Shrewsbury Telford and Wrekin which is one of Pat’s chosen charities for the year. They explained that it is a local charity funded locally and although it has the largest group of volunteers in the area it has very few paid staff. They aim to keep old people in their own homes for as long as possible by providing regular help and giving advice. They have 40 Day Centres and often this is the only social contact many old people have once per week. Activities are varied and efforts are made to keep them interested. Age UK's normal activities cover so many different aspects of life that it would be difficult to list them here. Recently they have started to open Dementia centres to help the afflicted and their carers and a new Friendship & Wellbeing Service which speaks for itself. All this is free and aimed at those over 60 years of age. It sounded so attractive. Please can I put the clock back - I seem to have been missing out on lots of things!
