Hi! I’m Earth! Sometimes, I block the sun’s light from reaching the surface of the moon.

A blood moon happens when just the right amount of light passes through my atmosphere during a lunar eclipse.

What is a blood moon? It sounds a little spooky! But it’s really nothing to worry about.

Dust particles in the air can make the moon appear reddish brownish in color.

How to Watch the Eclipse

The blood moon will be visible in most of North America on Thursday, March 13 and Friday, March 14. Here are the times to watch for it. With a family member, circle your time zone.

NOTICE

Gunnison County, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) have temporarily closed several roads to all motor vehicles to protect Gunnison Sage-Grouse during their mating season and to prevent road damage during wet spring conditions.

These roads are closed by March 14 and will reopen on May 15, 2025. Roads may be closed earlier than March 14 if they are excessively muddy. The cooperation of the public is required to successfully implement these road closures, which help support conservation efforts for Gunnison Sage-Grouse.

New in 2025, the BLM has area closures to all human use from March 14 to May 15 in the Chance Gulch and Sapinero Mesa Areas of Critical Environmental Concern.

The U.S. Forest Service closures in the Flat Top Mountain area north of Gunnison extends through July 15 to protect nesting Gunnison Sage-Grouse.

These include Henkel Road and Smokey Bear access roads.

BLM roads across the basin are subject to the motorized closures except for Hartman Rocks north of the Powerline Road.

Roads and trails in the north end of Hartman Rocks are subject to closure based on winter and mud conditions but those will open when roads and trails dry out.

Signal Peak roads and trails on BLM lands remain closed to motorized use from January 1 to May 15 to protect wintering wildlife. Mechanized use on Signal Peak is allowed east of the Signal Peak Road beginning May 1 after 10 am. There is a human use closure on Signal Peak from March 17 to May 15; affected trails include The Ridge, Rasta Gulch, and Chicken Wing.

Copies of the closure list and maps are available at Gunnison County Public

Works, 195 Basin Park Drive; Gunnison County Administration Office, 200 E. Virginia Ave.; Colorado Parks and Wildlife Office, 300 W. New York Ave.; the BLM office at 2500 E. New York Ave.; and the U.S. Forest Service Office, 216 N. Colorado Street; Gunnison, Colorado.

These closures apply to all motorized vehicles. Do not park at the closures in a manner that blocks access through the closure gates. All non-motorized trail users are also requested to use Gunnison Basin roads/trails only after 9 a.m. during this period to help reduce disturbance to sage-grouse.

For additional information call Gunnison County Public Works at 641-0044; BLM at 642-4940; or the U.S. Forest Service at 641-0471.

PET ADOPTION

Our sweet Perla has recently turned 16! We would love to give her the opportunity to live out her last years in a cozy home being smothered with affection. Don’t let her age fool you, this girl hardly acts 16. Perla is still fast as lightning, alert, and loving. Perla loves to nuzzle into a pile of blankets after a nice long walk. When given the opportunity she loves to show off her strong long legs! If the sun is shining that’s about the only thing she cares about. Perla would need to be the only pet in the her home. She is not a fan of other animals but she LOVES people. If you have space in your heart to bring Perla into your home please reach out to us to set up an appointment ohbedogfulrescue@ gmail.com 970-349-5047

Hey Mickey you so fine, you so fine you blow my mind Hey Mickey! Looking for a loyal and athletic companion? Look no further than Mickey, an affectionate and playful 2 years old male. He’s a friendly fellow who would love to be your new best friend and explore the great outdoors together. Mickey needs to stay active and would be a great running/hiking partner! He likes most dogs and would require a proper introduction to his new friends. If you’re interested in adopting sweet Mickey, please come and meet him - he can’t wait to show you how fun he can be! Mickey is great with children and curious but not aggressive towards cats. And his adoption is free!

Gracie (aka The Queen) is a Colorado native, born and partially raised. During her first life in The Miley came to me on September 25, 2010 all the way from Lawrence, KS. Her dad was a Red Heeler and her mother was a prize English Pointer. Miley grew quickly as all puppies do but she had some unusual tendencies and uncanny flexibility and coordination. She sometimes moved more like a cat than a dog.

Miley’s had a good life, all in Gunnison County, living on the river in Gunnison, as well as Crested Butte, and now living out her days on the West Branch of the Gunnison. She is a strong, healthy 14 1/2 year-old with some senior leniencies. Miley has always been a high octane breed with lots of energy. Her favorite toy was a plastic bottle with little pebbles in it to make lots of noise with its rattles and pops. In Miley’s senior years, she lacks very little for all of the home comforts, with her favorite pillow, sofa, blanket and TV shows. Miley is multi-talented but her favorite times are when she is out in nature. She has no strangers in her life and makes friends with everyone, as she is a highly social canine. Everyone loves Miley!
