It comes to something when artists have to provide their own hand-held lighting… At least, it looks that way as Suzie Zamit experiments with how best to illuminate a portrait head which takes on a sketchy look from being unfired, but painted, clay. That’s consistent with the aesthetic of Alan Rankle’s show ‘The Mystery of the Unfinished’ at the Rogue Gallery in St Leonards. The other examples here are by Charlotte Snook (‘Woman in the Studio with a Cloud’ - she told me that her clouds are male, but controlled by women); Matthew Radford (‘Riot 3, 2022); and Rankle himself (‘Study for Wilderness Approaching’ 2022, painted on a card advertising one of his own previous shows).
