It is not dark yet.

Alan Rankle betont in dieser Serie von Drucken das Licht und die Bedeutung der Dunkelheit und reflektiert gleichzeitig die hochglanzpolierten, stromlinienförmigen Deko-Interieurs des Le Méridien Grand Hotel Nürnberg. Dort, wo die Moderne mit edlen Metallen zusammentrifft und künstliche Formen sich um natürliche ranken. Rankles idyllische Szenen würdigen die ländliche Geschichte des Hotels. Einst ein Bauernhaus mit Hopfenspeicher, wurde es 1895 zu einem Hotel mit 80 Zimmern umgebaut.

Rankles zeitgenössische Botschaft wird d e u t l i c h , we n n w i r d u rc h d i e G ä n g e gehen, die Drucke betrachten und uns mit seinen Vorahnungen beschäftigen. Heutige Vorzeichen, seien es Naturkatastrophen, politische Zersplitterung, das Spiel mit dem Feuer mit atomaren Waffen und große Flüchtlingskrisen – sind nicht weit von den Katastrophenängsten von 1498 entfernt: Kometen, Sonnenfinsternisse, Überschwemmungen und Seuchen, auf die der große Künstler und Sohn Nürnbergs Albrecht Dürer in seiner Apokalypse-Serie anspielte.

Für Rankle war es naheliegend, einige von Dürers mächtigen Untergangsthemen zu untersuchen und sie im Lichte der heutigen Grundstimmung neu zu beleuchten. Wenn das heutige Denken auch nicht mehr so abergläubisch wie das der Menschen im 15.

Jahrhundert ist, so sind doch unsere Ängste um den Planeten Erde und das Schicksal der Menschheit genauso real.

“Das Landschaftselement ist von höchster Bedeutung”, sagt Rankle, “Die Natur wird traditionell als Metapher der Besinnung verstanden.”

D i e D r u cke d ie s e r Se rie basieren auf Au s s c h n i t te n aus R ankles Archiv von Landschaftsgemälden, die in Zusammenarbeit m i t d e n H o t e l a rc h i t e k t e n i m e r s t e n Schritt neu gestaltet wurden. Zunächst als Holzkohlezeichnungen mit silbernen Akzenten, im zweiten Schritt wurden die Farben Gelb und Ocker hinzugefügt, um mit der Erinnerung an patiniertes Messing zu spielen. Dabei klingen auch die Farben des Herbstes und des nahenden Winters an, wenn das Licht allmählich verschwindet. Bald.

Through this series of prints, Alan Rankle sees light and meaning within the darkness while reflecting the highly polished, streamlined deco interiors of Le Méridien Grand Hotel Nuremberg where manmade modernity convenes with precious metals, and machine bevelled shapes wrap themselves around natural curvatures.

Rankle’s pastoral scenes celebrate the hotel’s original place in rural history. The building itself began life as a farmhouse with a hop store and was developed in 1895 as a hotel with 80 rooms.

Rankle’s contemporary message is clear as we pass through his portals of understanding and engage with his premonitions. Today’s omens; devastating weather events, political fragmentation, nuclear brinkmanship, great movements of peoples are perhaps not so far removed from the catastrophic fears of 1498; comets, eclipses, floods and plagues to which the great artist and son of Nuremberg, Albrecht Dürer alluded in his Apocalypse series.

It was natural for Rankle to investigate some of Dürer’s powerful themes of doom and revisit them in the light of today’s prevailing mood. We might not be as superstitious as 15th Century folk, but our fears for planet earth and the destiny of humankind are just as real.

“The landscape element in the theme is paramount,” states Rankle, “and it lies within the tradition of using nature as a metaphor for reflection.”

The prints in this series are based on details from Rankle’s archive of landscape paintings and they are remixed in consultation with the hotel architects, firstly as near monochrome images in charcoal and silver, and then with an added fillip of lemon and ochre to recall the patinations of brass; colours of autumn and the coming winter when the light fades.
