QUINLAN’S REACH FOR THE STARS WITH WIN OVER SATELLITE! 2019 Sports Gear Direct Mooney Cup Final Quinlan’s Bar 0 Satellite Taxis 0 aet. (Quinlan’s won 7-6 on pens.) QUINLAN’S BAR won the 65TH Mooney Cup Final for the first time following a nail-biting win over holders Satellite Taxis at Turner’s Cross (writes Finbarr Buckley). Quinlan’s started brightly with early chances for captain Danny O’Donoghue and the lively Damien O’Mahony. Satellite were without a number of key players but gradually got a grip in the middle and were beginning to thread passes in behind their opponent’s rearguard. At the other end, Quinlan’s threatened in attack but as in previous deciders, the final pass was proving once again to be the team’s Achilles heel. The stroke of half-time saw the game’s best chance when Irwin made progress to find Mark Maher with a sight of goal. Maher elected to lift his shot over Aaron Spriggs who was wrong footed for a fraction of a second but was
relieved to see the ball rebound off the crossbar. Neither team could break the deadlock in normal time and, as the match moved into extra-time, both teams began to stretch their respective defences with crosses eluding the final touch as the sizable attendance awaited the game’s first goal that ultimately never arrived. Respective keepers, Spriggs and Hammond saved one each in the resultant shoot-out which took the tie to sudden death. Sub Robert O’Rourke stepped up to make it 7-6 and keep the tie alive before the unfortunate Alex Coughlan shot over to bring an end to a pulsating encounter. Quinlan’s Bar : Aaron Spriggs: Diarmuid Kenneally, Sean O’Donovan (Ciarán McCarthy),; Kevin Murphy, Gary Gould; Kyle Hosford, Graham Hosford, Cullan Kirwan (Robert O’Rourke); Danny O’Donoghue (capt.) SEMI FINAL SQUADS SCS Crookstown United vs Jay Bazz
FOOTBALL MAKES A WELCOME RETURN AFTER two enforced postponements due to the Covid pandemic outbreak, the beginning of the 2021/22 season couldn’t come fast enough as the season got underway earlier than ever, writes Finbarr Buckley. Who better to get the ball rolling in the CBL Shield than holders Doolan’s Cow. The reigning Premier Division champs had played the postponed 2020/21 final on Sunday, June 28th, defeating Martin Harvey Solicitors one-nil at Turner’s Cross. Their defence began with a 4-2 win over Marlboro Trust while in the same group Cork Hospitals had too much for debutants Lion’s Den, running out 4-1 winners at the Farm. Other notable results on the opening weekend included impressive wins for Co. Council, UCC Utd. and Harp Celtic. The shield culminated in Doolan’s defeating District 11 in one semi-final while a month later Jay Bazz eventually got to play their last four tie against Satellite Taxi which they narrowly last 3-2. The final took place at Turner’s Cross on Sunday, November 7th and once again featured a

victory for holders Doolan’s Cow who despite going behind early, rallied to wrap up a fourth triumph in six seasons. League action began in early September with wins in the Premier Division for Martin Harvey Solicitors over Jason O’Neill Electrical (4-1) and Healy O’Connor Solicitors who won their best of five encounter with today’s finalists SCC Crookstown Utd. at Garryduff. Lion’s Den, who would go on to lead the division for most of the season, saw off Derrow Rovs. 2-1 in the first division, The season moved into the New Year on track with the Mick Mooney Cup competition reaching its climax with the first final meeting between Doolan’s and SCS Crookstown Utd. Behind the scenes the team of Peter Travers, Ashley Todd, Ray Anthony, Joe Murphy and Anto Golden have worked to make sure the season progresses smoothly. The novel use of St. Colman’s Pk. to host the two divisional finals on Sunday, May 15th is certain to bring the curtain down on one of the most significant season in the league’s history before preparation can begin in earnest to celebrate the league’s 70th anniversary.
