You have reached your RENDEZVOUS!!! But, what is this monstrosity? In order to fully understand how this STAR WARS-looking spaceship has landed in the middle of the small town of San Luis Obispo, where the tallest

buildings usually only reach about five stories, a little bit of analyzing needs to be taken place. First, we must define what RENDEZVOUS is.

SITE PLAN: HIGHWAY 101 & MADONNA ROAD INTERCHANGE One of the more interesting observation about San Luis We are tasked to create a megastructure and commercial Obipso is how culturally centered it is between what complex that at the very least will be ten stories tall. And it is defined as “Northern California” and “Southern will be located right across from the famous Madonna Inn California”. San Luis Obispo can be demographically and Madonna Mountain. With the creation of something described, for the most part, as a hybrid between The Bay that will probably be an icon due to the shear scope of Area and the LA-San Diego Area. the project, how can we take advantage of SLO’s Central Location? How can SLO be a transition point between Northern and Southern California? How can we use architecture to enhance SLO as a rendezvous point for the people passing by everything from northern to southern CA, and vice versa?

The site of the hotel mega-structure is located at the interchange between Madonna Road and highway 101.

The hotel serves as a southern entrance for San Luis Obispo, indicating to motorists traveling from southern to northern California that they are entering the central coast. The main tower of the hotel mega-structure rises on the south side of the Madonna road, and a bridge complex extends out of the tower and spans over the road to the north side of the road.

The bridge complex serves as an elevated public walkway, offering green-spaces, small shops, and small food amenities. The hotel provides vast, elevated views of San Luis Obispo with rooms facing Madonna Mountain. The facade folds, warps, and breaks as it wraps around the tower and fans out around the bridge.

CINEMA CENTER One of the most prominent aspects of the OVERPASS is its cinema center. The cinema center contains a “CINEMA CLOUD” that suspends eight cinema movie theaters. The circulation of the theater is organized as one, elongated corridor that serves as a mezzanine for the floor below it.

Cross-Bridges serve to connect the staircase over the “opento-below” area, and into the theaters.

The site of Litauens Plads is located in the center of Vesterbro, surrounded by housing, a school, and a church with a tower, which is the most significant landmark of the area. During most times of the year, the park is lively, specifically during the summer time. However, the area is zoned into specific sections: (1) children’s play area for the school, (2) outdoor court, and (3) a green park. The strict division causes most of the public to only participate in social interaction in the green park while the children stay on their half of the area. How can architecture to be used

to increase social activity of a space? How can a culinary school be integrated into a social framework that is set up by architecture? The project seeks to increase social activity by creating opportunities for situations rather than functions.

By allowing spaces to be flexible, multiple opportunities for various kinds of social interaction can occur compared to designating zones for certain functions. The tower becomes the main hub for social interaction, containing an indoor urban garden, a stairway to the rooftop terrace, and a rock-climbing wall on the north facade.

The scope of the project entails creating an art object gallery located under the open arch of the S-Train Bridge that currently exists as an entrance and exit for the residents of the apartment complex on the site. In addition to the object gallery, the park also needs to be redesigned in conjunction with the object gallery in order to create a successful public space for the people on the border between NØRREBRO and NORDVEST. Based on the observations and the scope of the project, the following questions are raised which will be crucial to the design of the project:

1. How can architecture be used to create a symbiotic relationship between the programs of an object gallery and public park in order to create a virbant area of human activity?

2. How should the proposed object gallery respond to the grungy, industrial atmosphere of the park?

3. How can the park take advange of the constant circulation throughout the area in order to increase optional activites rather than just necessary activities?

SITE PLAN + ANALYSIS Glentenparken is not really a “park.” The area is clearly run-down with all the graffiti, oddlyconstructed dirty modular wooden seating, randomly-placed rocks that serve the boarder of the “park,” and dilapidated vegetation. Most of the people circulate around the park, and the people that do go through the park are the residents that live in the apartment complex on the other side of the S-Tog bridge. A lot of vehicular and bicycle movement occurs around the area due to the major

roads near the site as well as the presence of the S-Tog. The atmosphere of the site is very grungy and industrial, which is heightened by the hard, rough materiality of the concrete and wood in the area, the steel gates under the bridge, and the metal cladding used on the facade of the factory across Nordre Fasanvej [see the Site Plan for more detail on “Atmosphere”]. Taking all these observations into account, the site has potential to become a lively, communal space.

Kitbashing saves time that would be spent scratch building an entire model. Hobbyists may kitbash to create a model of a subject for which there is not a commercial kit. kitbashing came to the attention of a wider public via the fine modelwork seen in TV series such as Thunderbirds and the films 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Many of the spaceship models created for these programs incorporated details from tank, speedboat and car kits.

ANALOG SKETCH MODELS Kitbashing [or model bashing] is an art practice whereby a new scale model is created by taking pieces out of commercial kits. These pieces may be added to a custom project or to another kit. For professional modelmakers, kitbashing is popular to create concept models for detailing movie special effects. Commercial model kits are a ready source of “detailing�, providing any number of identical, mass-produced components that can be used to add fine detail to an existing model.

The design of the facade of the object gallery is made to feel like a KITBASH [more simply described as a threedimensional collage], as if one found random parts around the city to create an object that somehow feels cohesive. The object gallery itself becomes an object for the park, and the KITBASH style of the facade helps to create intrigue and curiosity for the people circulation by the area. It is meant to be fun and whimiscal, a place to remember. Coversely, the interior of the gallery is much more simple in order to frame the exhibition. Just like how the object gallery is an object for the park, the objects in the gallery take centerstage inside the object gallery rather than the architecture of the structure.

The layout of the park is linear and grided in order to contrast the angular nature of the gallery. The park proves a variety of microclimates, such as open grass area to play or rest on, shaded and open seating, assembly spaces, intimate spaces, and loud and quiet spaces. At night, the facade of the S-Tog bridge becomes a surface for which digital media con be projected on, such as digital exhibitions and movie nights. In summary, KITBASH seeks to embrace the grungy, industrial atmosphere of the site by creating a memorable experience through the whimsical architecture and create a social relationship between art gallery and public park.

The art museum in an urban context presents an inherent conflict. It increasingly plays the role of cultural icon within the city but simultaneously is obliged to neutrality on behalf of its collections. In other words the museum is required to be both foreground within its urban context and background for the objects it houses. The project explores this internal/external opposition. Externally, the focus of the museum is on building posture and its role in civic identity and engagement. Internally, the focus of museum is on the art, how it is viewed, archived, transferred and received.

The project explores how a museum can act as a catalyst for urban life, an object that cultivates cultural and civic connectedness. The project investigates the role of a museum’s form in civic identity. The project looks at various positions on what makes a building- especially a museum- culturally significant.

The proposal for the SLOMA utilizes a horizontal language as its primary envelope system. This horizontal language creates a dynamic environment that reinforces the constant circulation throughout a museum. A plaza is raised from the street level while the main lobby is sunken below. These elevation changes create unique micro-environments, ones that blur the distinction between exterior and interior spaces. And through this, the site becomes an energized space that links the museum with the civic core.

The New SLOMA sits CONFIDENTLY within its property line. Using a mass-base system, the main public mass of the museum is contained within a tower that rests upon a podium. The people circulate up the tower through the gallery spaces. Within this circulation pattern, a celebrated staircase and observation deck provide views to the surrounding environment, including the nearby creek, Mission Plaza, and Mission San Luis Obispo itself.

2. Pockets and extrude up

The new San Francisco Civic Plaza serves to connect the people of the communities that surround the Civic Center.

The project was conceived to be a free-circulating space that provides choices of conditions for people to inhabit: shaded vs. sun spaces, open vs. enclosed spaces, energetic vs. calm spaces, passive vs. active spaces.

3. Soften edges and slope down towards central axis

The project contains two main programmatic spaces: the above-ground condition of the urban plaza and the belowground condition of the recreational center. The division between these two programmatic spaces is a thickened surface that acts as a ground plane for the urban plaza and as a roof and ceiling for the rec center.

4. Uplift and striate for shading and circulation

Subtle uplifts within the ground plane become entrances that connect the above and below spaces. Stripular design elements circumnavigate the site, becoming amphitheaters along the underground entrances and shading devices on the south, east, and west facades.

The site of the project, located in the Civic Center of San Francisco, is a plaza that serves as the open public area between major public/civic buildings, most notably the San Francisco City Hall and Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

The “entrance” to the plaza is a pedestrian thoroughfare that branches off from Market Street, a major road that terminates at the Ferry Building. The thoroughfare is on an axis that cuts directly to the center of city hall and divides the side into a south half and a north half.

The Civic Center itself is organized using a Beaux-Arts plan, highlighted by a strong use of symmetry to arrange the buildings. As a result, the current plaza itself is symmetrical with each half almost a perfect mirror of one another.

San Francisco itself is in a cool, humid climate, indicated by the Psychrometric Chart. The prevailing winds primarily come from the southwest, as indicated by the wind rose. There are a couple of warm/overheating periods in San Francisco, so some shading will need to be employed. But, for the most part, it seems passive cooling strategies will play a bigger role.
