Many wanted the signatures of artists Lars Sjööblom and Christoffer Relander on their stamp products.

It felt like a world premiere when Åland got its own stamps in 1984. The stamps are a fundamental pillar of the Post’s operations and continue to be important ambassadors for Åland and its autonomy. The ideas bank is inexhaustible. As long as we have stories to tell and people’s joy of discovery, curiosity, and passion for collecting persist, stamps will have a role in the future as well. Turning 40 is a milestone worth celebrating, and I’m delighted to present our anniversary issue in this edition. I wish you a happy new year in the company of Åland’s stamps!

1 February sees the start of a new three-year stamp series featuring boathouses, a unique type of building that is commonly found in the Åland coastal environment. Kjell Söderlund has photographed the first two stamps of the series.
Discover Åland boat houses Boathouses have been part of the inhabited coastal landscape since the Iron Age and serve as shelter and storage for boats. They should not be confused with boat sheds on land. A boathouse stands in the water with the opening facing the water for the boat. In Åland, boathouses usually stand on stilts, but are also built on stone boxes. To protect against the strong rays of the sun, the house often has few or no windows.
There are no statistics on the number of boathouses on Åland, but the building tradition is very much alive, and thousands are scattered around the landscape, in boathouse villages or at summer cottages and permanent homes along the coast. Officially, you cannot live in a boathouse, but otherwise its use is free. The first two stamps in the new series show two boathouses with a traditional appearance dating back to the 1800s. 4 • ÅLAND POST FRIMÄRKEN
In Finnö on Kökar, you will find the red boat house that is reflected in the shiny surface of the lake. Greggkil’s boathouse, as it is called, was built in the late 1950s by fisherman and farmer Albin Andersson. Albin was also a skilled boat builder whose own clinker-built boat had its place in the boat house. He liked to go netfishing with his motorboat, singing hymns during his fishing trips, says his granddaughter Anne Lindholm, who owns the boathouse today. Hibernating boathouses can be seen on the other definitive stamp, which shows a row of boathouses by Västerängaviken bay in Lemland. The boathouse in the foreground was built in the 1960s by Ole Andersson, whose widow Hedvig owns it today. On 1 February, it is time for a new series of franking labels. Finnish illustrator Sofia Pusa has captured four colourful butterflies and their life cycle on the labels.
The amazing transformation Åland has a rich butterfly life, and the new franking labels present small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae), large white (Pieris brassicae), green hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) and silver-washed fritillary (Argynnis paphia). Life as a butterfly is marked by the complex biological process called metamorphosis, the transformation from egg to larvae, pupa, and fully developed butterfly, a process which can take weeks or years to complete. The small tortoiseshell is one of our most common butterflies thriving on beaches and in meadows, gardens, and cities. It is a medium-sized butterfly species belonging to the Nymphalidae family. It flies from July to September and again 6 • ÅLAND POST FRIMÄRKEN
after hibernation as an adult butterfly when the spring sun peeks out in April. The large white is also medium-sized and has white wings with black tips. In Finland, it overwinters in the pupal stage and flies from May to September with a break in July. It likes open landscapes and gardens. The caterpillars love cabbage and will happily eat the entire host plant until only the stem remains, making them less popular in the garden.
Also common is the green hairstreak which flies in spring and early summer. No bigger than a thumb nail, it can be recognized by the green undersides of its wings. This butterfly prefers to live in pine and mixed forests and overwinters as a pupa. Heather plants such as blueberries and lingonberries are the caterpillar’s main host plants.
The edition includes a maximum card with butterflies fluttering in a sea of flowers. The special cancel shows three butterflies. On the first day cover, a large white has settled on a Wood Cranesbill, while the first day cancel captures the metamorphosis. With its 53–66 mm, the silver-washed fritillary is the largest of the butterflies found especially on Åland. It thrives in areas dominated by forest and in flowerrich meadows. It flies from July to September and hibernates as a caterpillar, which feeds on violets.

Sofia Pusa made her debut as a stamp artist with this year’s peace stamp and took on the new stamp assignment enthusiastically: “My aim and greatest challenge in the illustration process was to strike a balance. I wanted the butterflies to remain recognizable, grounded in reality while also infusing elements of magic capturing the miracle of metamorphosis. I enjoyed exploring the intricate colour palette and nuanced details in these butterflies.” Source: luontoportti.com

On 1 March, Åland Post highlights maritime education in Åland, which celebrates several anniversaries in 2024. Swedish illustrator Rebecca Elfast’s stamp issue is a tribute to the people of the sea.
Åland maritime education celebrates jubilees Maritime education in Åland dates back to the 19th century. When peasant seafaring began in the 1830s, the need for qualified and professional seamen increased. In 2024, it will be 170 years since the first navigational training started in Godby. After a long and persistent struggle, Åland public educator and vicar of Finström Frans Petter von Knorring, was able to introduce navigational education into the elementary school curriculum in 1854. It took until 1874 before the first proper nautical school that trained merchant skippers, helmsmen, and sea captains opened in Mariehamn, and which will therefore celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2024. The education was considered very attractive, and among the graduates you will find shipowners Mathias Lundquist Jr, Robert Mattsson, August Troberg, and Gustaf Eriksson. Today, seamen and sea captains are trained in maritime programs at the Åland Vocational School and the Åland University of Applied Sciences. 12 • Å L A N D P O S T F R I M Ä R K E N
The stamp issue captures traditional nautical and new technical skills needed for work at sea. Illustrator Rebecca Elfast talks about the assignment: “The stamp depicts an anchor wrapped in a rope that curls into the shape of a heart - it encapsulates the pride of and love for maritime education and the sea. Reappearing as a supporting structure on the first day cover, the rope undulates like waves among navigational instruments and maritime elements. The rope is a fine symbol of education; knowledge is built strand by strand to become a robust and strong rope, and all the parts are woven together to form a whole. In the middle of the sheet, you can see islands, routes, and elements from nautical charts, inspired by older drawings showing a simplified coastal outline with important land features highlighted. Come 1 March, 40 years will have passed since the first Åland stamps saw the light of day. The anniversary is celebrated with the release of an exuberantly playful miniature sheet designed by stamp debuting illustrator Tzenko Stoyanov.
Åland stamps turn 40 When the first Åland stamps were issued on 1 March 1984, it was the result of a longterm process that started already in the 1950s when Åland got its own flag in 1954. Attempts intensified in the 1970s when the Faroe Islands got their own stamps, but all applications to the postal authorities in Helsinki were rejected. The turning point came in 1979 when the Ålanders turned to the Ministry of Justice, justifying the request for their own stamps by saying they would be an important symbol of the autonomy. Finnish Minister of Justice at the time, Christoffer Taxell, took the issue further and, in 1982, President Mauno Koivisto approved the Åland Stamp Ordinance. The stamps were issued by the Posts and Telecommunications of Finland and were only valid for mail posted in Åland. It was not until 1984, after two years of preparation, that the first stamps with the country designation “Åland” were ready for issue.

The premiere series consisted of seven stamps and five motifs: a definitive stamp series showing a fishing boat in three different colours, a commemorative stamp illustrating Åland shipping and three definitive stamps featuring a map of Åland, the Åland flag and the provincial seal. From 1984 to 1992, the Posts and Tele communications of Finland was responsible for the stamp production, while the motifs were produced in collaboration with the Åland provincial government and its stamp delegation. Great emphasis was placed on the connection of the motifs to Åland autonomy and history. On 1 January 1993, a new Autonomy Act came into force, giving Åland the right to establish its own postal administration. A debutante in the context of stamps, Swedish-Bulgarian illustrator Tzenko Stoyanov took on the challenge of capturing the essence of Åland stamps and stamp collecting. Images that stand out Tzenko Stoyanov was familiar with neither stamps nor Åland when he was asked to create the Åland Post anniversary edition. “The theme was completely new to me, both when it came to the production of stamps in general, Åland stamps and Åland as a province. The idea was to start from the first fishing boat stamp and, in consultation with Åland Post, I chose the following elements to be included in the concept: history and tradition versus future, innovation and evolution mixed with images of Åland and postal elements.” “I wanted to give the miniature sheet a timeless, fairy-tale feel through a slightly surreal story where the sea becomes space, the boats spaceships, and the birds letters. With the motif, I want to show that there are no limits to communication and that Åland, through the Post, extends a 16 • Å L A N D P O S T F R I M Ä R K E N
hand to send love and peace to the world and the universe. I drew everything by hand before processing it digitally, all in a more or less traditional style with a contemporary flavour,” explains Tzenko.
He has worked as an illustrator since 2001. Having studied visual communication in the Netherlands, Tzenko also lived and worked in Amsterdam for a few years. Today, he is based in Stockholm. His many illustration assignments include commissions for publishers, advertising agencies and authorities around Europe, but he describes his main occupation as conceptual editorial illustration for various daily newspapers mainly in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Sweden. He explains his interest in illustrations and the work of visualizing texts like this:

“When I can “crack the code”, that is, come up with a concept for an illustration that works well while, at the same time, applying my aesthetic vision, then I am satisfied, and the illustration achieves its purpose.”
He says that he finds much inspiration in American illustrations from the 1930s to 1960s, but the children’s books in his home in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he was born and raised, and in Havana, Cuba, where he lived during part of his youth, are also a great source of inspiration. Alongside his illustration assignments, he works on his own ideas and projects and has participated in numerous exhibitions. His work has been exhibited at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art,
and at the Spring Salon and the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, among others. “When I work on my own projects, it’s often about a theme and an issue that I find engaging, such as social problems, human dilemmas, and the questioning of norms. For a few years now, in my free time, I’ve also been practicing the art of tattooing which fascinates me,” says Tzenko.
