On 1 January 2023, a new Postal Act comes into force, and this means that Åland, like neighbouring countries, is switching to delivering some mail items every other day. The basic reason for the change is the decreasing amount of mail - by almost 50% in the last 10 years.
By changing the way we distribute mail, we ensure efficient and environmentally friendly distribution.
Will physical mail delivery disappear? No, and we will continue to issue stamps, an important symbol and mirror for Åland to the world. Each stamp is a work of art in miniature.
I wish you great collecting ex periences, even in the future!

The 3-year stamp series featuring veteran tractors photographed by David Lundberg ends with an issue on 4 January. Last in the series are a 1955 Ferguson and a 1960 Fordson Super Major that continue to roll to the delight of young and old.
Irishman Harry Ferguson developed the small, grey-painted tractor, commonly known as Little Grey Fergie. The handy tractor was perfect for the small farm and revolutionized agriculture when launched in 1946. Ferguson’s amazing invention was the hydraulics. Still today, the technology is called “The Ferguson System” and is used in modern tractors. The hydraulic system means that, when the tractor with plough goes heavy, the weight of the implement is transferred to the tractor, which lifts the plough and maintains the same depth.
The Ferguson tractor on the stamp came to Åland in 1956 in connection with an Åland exhibition, finding a new home on Valter Jansson’s farm in Svinö, Lumparland. “The tractor was used for everything that must be done on the farm until the engine quit. It was stashed away on the farm for many years, until my brother Lars-Erik and I decided that we would renovate it.
Around 2005, I started looking for a new engine and was lucky enough to find one in excellent condition in Sweden. So, now it’s painted and runs like clockwork,” Valter Jansson’s son Sven-Åke explains.
Sven-Åke keeps the tractor on the premises of the veteran tractor club at the Åland rural centre in Jomala. But it doesn’t gather dust, Sven-Åke explains:
“During May and June, I use the tractor to drive around with the children who par ticipate in the 4-H activities at the former agricultural school. They ride in a crate pulled by the tractor.”
On the second stamp you see a 1960 Fordson Super Major. Ford Motor Company used the Fordson name for its tractors manufactured in Great Britain for the European market until 1964. At the time, the company was one of the largest tractor manufacturers. This model turned

out to be the final version of Ford’s Major models, and it was equipped with a weight transfer system and differential lock.
Gösta Johansson bought the new trac tor for his farm Västra Hinders, located in Önningeby, Jomala. The tractor is still preserved on the farm, driven by Daniel Högman, who bought it from his motherin-law.
“I painted and fixed up the tractor in the early 2000s. It’s intact with original parts. The fenders have been replaced but, as you can see, it has original side plates, which is rather unusual. I haven’t added anything extra to the tractor and the ex haust system is original”, Daniel explains.
Even this Fordson tractor is still rolling. “I use it when cutting the roadsides,
and it has also become a tradition to drive it attached to a trailer to the erection of the village midsummer pole. Usually, people cheer up when seeing it, chugging along with its load”, Daniel laughs.
The vintage tractor stamp series started in 2020. Åland photographer David Lund berg has been bouncing about in fields and crawling in barns all over Åland to photo graph tractors for the six stamps of the series, including illustrations for first day covers and maximum cards. Åland Post thanks members of the Åland Veteran Trac tor Club, who assisted with detailed knowl edge and located all the vintage tractors.

In addition to the tractor series, David has photographed the Postal Boat Race for the 2020 Europa stamp themed old postal routes.
Retain the tastes of summer with the 2023 franking labels issued on 4 January. Finnish artist
illustrates her first postal labels showing delicate and whimsical garden berries.
On the upcoming franking labels you will find four berry varieties grown in Åland gardens: black currants (Ribes nigrum), raspberries (Rubus idaeus), gooseberries (Ribes uva-crispa) and strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa). Although, from a scientific point of view, the strawberry is not a berry but a false fruit. What you eat is the red, swollen flower base of the straw berry, which has been cultivated in the Nordics since the end of the 18th century. As a hybrid species grown from a cross of beach strawberry and wild strawberry, the first strawberries can be harvested in June.
Black currant is a fragrant shrub of 1-2 metres with large palmate leaves. The gooseberry bush with its soft-hairy curly leaves with a shiny upper surface is a rela tive. Both shrubs flower in May. The sweet
black currants and the tart yellow-green gooseberries are ready to be picked in late summer.
Raspberry, on the other hand, is a semishrub whose shoots develop from buds on the root system. The woody rhizome of the shrub is lightly covered with thorns, and it needs more pruning and watering to pro duce a good harvest. The red berries come off easily and can be harvested from June to September, depending on the variety.
Mari immediately fell for the illustration assignment:
“I really enjoy working with flora and fauna related objects and design organic forms, so the garden berries were well within my comfort zone. The idea of giving the berries different moods and personalities came to
The first day cover is overflowing with lush greenery. On the front of the cover, you see a classic watering can. The first day cancel features the sweet strawberry.
me almost immediately, and I appreciated being encouraged to create playful and colourful labels rather than realistic images. The black currants look a bit mischievous and secretive, the raspberries are wild ras cals, while the gooseberries are the gentle sweethearts among thorns. The strawberry is the juicy one, basking in sunlight.”
The issue marks Mari’s debut as a stamp artist, giving her new experiences.
“Creating something for the small space was a challenge; to make the motifs appear rich in detail yet simple enough to strike the viewer’s eye. I drew by hand and edited the drawings in Photoshop. For the final sketches, I used a ballpoint pen to create the delicate lines and added the final colours and textures on the computer”, Mari explains.
Mari Oksanen is an artist, illustrator, and designer. She loves colour and nature, both of which she uses to communicate stories with playful surrealism. She dreams of illustrating a book with watercolours and doing a mural. She lives in Somero in southern Finland.

On 15 February, 150 years have passed since the birth of Carl Björkman. One of the leading figures of the Åland movement advocating a reunification with Sweden, he can also be attributed the title “architect of the autonomy”. Åland Post celebrates the anniversary with a portrait stamp.
Born in Turku in 1873, Carl Björkman trained as a lawyer in Helsinki. In 1903, he settled on Åland when he got the position as police chief on Föglö. His scepticism of Russian supremacy in Finland contributed to his resignation from the post in 1912. His political commitment to Åland began in 1905 during the Finnish general strike, when he was elected vice-chairman of the Åland general strike committee. From having no ties to Åland, he soon became one of the leaders of the Åland society together with Julius Sundblom.
Carl Björkman played a significant role in the Åland Movement. Among other things, he organized the petitions for a reunifi cation with Sweden and convinced the Swedish king to send protective troops to Åland during the Finnish Civil War. All this lobbying led to him, and Julius Sundblom, being convicted of high trea son, but they were later pardoned by the Finnish president.
In 1922, following the decision on auton omy for Åland by the League of Nations,
Björkman was elected to the first Åland parliament and appointed Premier. As Head of the new provincial government, which consisted of five members, he had to tackle the mammoth task of establishing the administration and legislative processes for the autonomy.
Not only did he lay the foundations for the forms of autonomy with regard to the relationship between the provincial government and the parliament of Finland, but also for the relationship between Åland and the Finnish authorities.
Björkman had strong opinions and was unafraid of conflict. He was twice reelected as Premier, but the collaboration began to crack in the 1930s. In 1938, he had to resign after a vote of no confidence due to a dissenting opinion regarding the protection and defence of Åland neutrality. Carl Björkman died on 5 September, 1948.

On the first day cover, you see Carl Björkman in his office. His lamp of diligence is said to have shone well into the night. You see an extract from the shorthand minutes confirming the election of Carl Björkman for Premier in 1922 on the back.
The first day cancel depicts his signature, as written on a telegram to the Swedish king.
The 2023 bird motif challenged artist Bo Lundwall’s bird detective skills, but he managed to capture the elusive parrot crossbill, most likely now depicted on a postage stamp for the first time. The day of issue is 15 March.
Artist Bo Lundwall had to resort to dif ferent tricks to successfully paint the par rot crossbill (Loxia pytyopsittacus):
“It was an extra challenge to obtain ref erence material for this bird species. When I was bird watching, I sometimes saw the common crossbill but more rarely the par rot crossbill. One trick was to check the species observation system of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, where I could follow whether the bird was visible in my immediate area every day. In the end, I got hold of sketching material. I also met conservator/sculptor Lennart Petters son, who lent me a mounted specimen of a female so that I could study details more closely. It’s my first time painting parrot crossbills, so it was extra fun to paint this particular bird for a stamp.”
Both parrot and common crossbill breed in Åland, and they can be difficult to tell apart in the forest. Crossbills are characterized by the crossed tip of the beak, which is adapted to snap up the pineal scales. The parrot crossbill’s beak is both wider and longer than that of other crossbills. The bird mainly eats pine seeds,
so, if you spot a crossbill in a pine tree, it is probably the parrot crossbill, because the common crossbill prefers spruce seeds.
The stamp shows a pair of birds. Bo explains his choice: “The reason I sketched both male and female on the stamp was that I find it important to show how much the colours of the plumage differ.”
The crossbill has a large head, long wings, and a forked tail. The female is greyish green or greyish brown while the male plumage varies from brick red to magnifi cent red. Up close you see similarities with parrots, the precise meaning of the Greek word psittakos in the species name.
Parrot crossbill is endemic to Åland and Scandinavia. This may be the first time that parrot crossbills appear on a stamp. Åland Post thanks members of Birdpex, a stamp exhibition specializing in birds, for the tip.

Have
visited a printing house? In May, Åland Post visited stamp printing house Cartor to check out what happens behind the scenes and learn more about the craft of printing.
Since 1999, Cartor in France has printed Åland stamps. Here, we find Sales Director Karine Zaworski, who generously guides us through the printing process.
In La Loupe, mostly postage stamps in smaller editions are printed. Karine explains that they often try to print stamps of the same size at the same time, which is advantageous for the postal services. We see the offset printing machine, which has printed many Åland stamps, and machines for all types of finishing, from perforation, die-cutting, foiling to packing. It turns out
that not all is done by machine. The tools for creating stamp perforations especially catch our interest, a real handicraft.
Karine has worked for Cartor for 25 years and experienced the development of stamp production up close:
“I enjoy helping the posts find printing methods that suit their needs. It can be a challenge, but we always try to find a solu tion and, most of the time, we are success ful. Some of the most common effects are embossing and foiling, but we have printed stamps in most materials. Not long ago,
you everSales Director Karine and the Post’s writer Gunilla outside Cartor in La Loupe, beautifully situated on a country road some 2 hours west of Paris, overlooking green fields.
It all starts in the pre-press room where the graphic staff transfer the stamp original from the computer to thin aluminium plates by UV laser, one plate per colour. The engraved parts of the plates show where the colour will be applied.
we printed our first LED-stamps. I also like the Åland stamps. The colourful sheets with gutters are unusual.”
In Wolverhampton, we find an even larger fleet of machinery. Here, Cartor prints stamps for fewer but larger postal services, Royal Mail for instance. The 3-storey high and 140 m. long Cerutti gravure machine is in full swing during our visit. We also get a chance to observe the mounting of year sets and see how stamps are affixed to our FDCs and cancelled. With new insights, we look forward to receiving our next shipment from Cartor.
In 2003, Walsall Security Printers bought French Cartor, stamp printers since 1975. Founded already in 1892, Walsall produced the very first self-adhesive stamps for Sierra Leone in 1963. Cartor specializes in the printing of stamps and other types of security documents but offers also warehousing and fulfilment. Ian Brigham is managing director and owner of Cartor.
Refilling of ink into the offset printing machine. The print operator plays an important role in the printing process, determining the amount and speed of water through the machine. It is important to find a balance between ink and the water, that pushes the colour onto the plates. In the offset machine, the printed sheets are still wet, and a thin layer of powder is therefore applied. As the drying time of colours varies, the printer’s know-how is crucial for the end results, ensuring that the colours are not too weak.
Cartor uses this tool for perforating the stamps. The pins are placed by hand in the required forma tion on the metal board, which is inserted into the perforating machine.
Cartor has two machines for perforating gummed sheets and another two machines capable of perforating gummed sheets as well as self-adhesive sheets and other materials such as wood or cotton. Cartor uses 110 grams water activated FSC-certified paper from Europe.
At Cartor in Wolverhampton, we are joined by Commercial Director Andrew Brigham, who walks us through the facility, illustrating the structure of a security printing house.
Not only does Cartor have offset and gravure printing machines, but also this Domino digital printer on which the Åland franking labels are printed. It prints up to six colours.
The facility in Wolverhampton of approx. 7000 m² holds 4 units: one for printing, two units for finishing, and one for warehousing, picking, and packing of philatelic products.
