The franking labels are based on the graphic profile of the Åland anniversary year created by Annika Zetterqvist, graphic designer at Åland advertising agency April Kommunikation. She won a contest an nounced by the Åland Government to design a logo for the anniversary and was commis sioned to also create the graphic profile.

“When my colleague Anna Karlsson thought of using the word willfulness as a heading to describe Åland and Åland temperament, it was easy for me to start looking for symbols that could serve as a kind of summary. Some symbols were obvious, while others were potentially

Åland’s 100th anniversary marks 2022, and we present the first issue, new franking labels, on 1 February. The powerful slogan of the anniversary year is also the name of the series, designed by Annika Zetterqvist who also created the logo and visual profile of the anniversary.

On the labels, Annika presents a selection:

“The biggest challenge was the limited space and the request that the motifs would fit together like a puzzle. Of course, I wanted to include the Åland colours that are visible in the hearts. Here, you find the important maritime history with both Pommern and the Lågskär lighthouse, but also the midsummer crown as a familiar symbol of Åland’s cultural history. The deer represents public Åland,

provocative and norm-breaking. I wanted to arouse curiosity, to surprise and engage. There is no main symbol except possibly the sea, which of course cannot be ignored since we live on an island”, Annika explains.

while the swan is a flirt with Finland. The berry with leaves underneath is the logo of Åland’s development and sustainability agenda, which I’ve worked with. As I was creating the graphic profile, Åland network Bärkraft (sustainability) had just won EU’s sustainability award for having defined its own local agenda based on the UN’s global sustainability objectives. It suited the topic willfulness well, the courage to go your own way and create something of your own. The peace sign, of course, alludes to the demilitarization. The Åland creativity and nature interact in the dragonfly created from cutlery spoons by scrap artist Johan Karlsson”.

The FDC shows a flowing watercolor wave that forms an and-sign that stands for “and so much more”. The labels illustrate a few symbols that represent Åland and the Ålanders but, of course, there are so many more, Annika explains.

The other stamp shows a red 1956 Valmet 20. Born in Finland in 1951, the legendary Old-Reliable Valmet tractor was of great importance to the small farms.

On 1 February, it’s time for the second part of the veteran tractor stamp series. David Lundberg has photographed a homemade tractor from the 1940s and a FinnishfromOld-Reliablethe1950s.

The rear axle is probably from a Ford truck, while the front axle is from a Ford A but forged to obtain higher ground clearance. The tractor has two gearboxes, one of which acts as a high/low gear; grandpa took out a hole and mounted a pulley to obtain two different speeds.”

“The motor came off a Ford model A and the tractor was initially operated on wood gas. It was later retrofitted when gasoline became available. The frame is made from

More tractors from the past

The car-tractor was built by Runar Karls son on his home farm in Ringsböle, Jomala, in the early 1940s. His grandson Kristoffer Karlsson renovated it around 2000. Today, Kristoffer lives on the farm where the tractor still resides. He gives a detailed description of the construction of the tractor:

This tractor is located on the archipelago island of Sottunga. The owner, Raul Petrell, received it as a gift from his mother when he was 10 years old.

6 • ÅLAND POST FRIMÄRKEN

“It was the first tractor on the farm when I received it as brand new from the factory on October 14, 1956; it cost 384,500 old

The 3-year stamp series featuring veteran tractors in Åland set off in February present ing two treasures from the early 20th cen tury. The following two tractor stamps jump forward a few decades. Tractors became increasingly predominant in farming during the 1930s and, when demand was greater than supply, the idea of converting cars into tractors was conceived. Such a tractor is exactly what you see on the first stamp.

Since then, Raul has refurbished the tractor, which is in good company of seven other veteran tractors on the farm. His collection focuses on the first tractors that arrived on Sottunga around the mid-1950s. challenges:“Thetractors could not be moved very far, especially as some of them lacked working engines. So, I had a limited choice of background and only a few different types of compositions to work with. Still, I wished to obtain variety and a mix of colours, but at the same time show that they belong together. Obtaining a clear contrasting colour for each tractor was important because of the small format. The photos had to be relatively simple and graphic, something I often strive for in my photography”.

On 25 March, Åland Post pays tribute to the ÅSS pavilion, a popular and acclaimed architectural gem in Mariehamn. Artist Carolina Sundelin took on the challenge to capture the special design of the house.

Price: €3.10 Code: 416-000425

Artist Carolina Sundelin took inspiration from photographs of the pavilion from

12 • ÅLAND POST FRIMÄRKEN

“I’d never really noticed the house before. It’s an interesting building and I studied it at close range, taking photos from the pier at a certain angle before I started making sketches. The architecture is reminiscent of an Asian building, an entertaining fact to discover. Since focus was to be on the house, I removed advertising images, flagpole and terrace. The many tiny windows on the building and the dragon details proved to be a challenge. Also, the house stands beneath the cliffs with a great number of pine trees in the background, so, the house doesn’t emerge very well. Of the two designs I made, I preferred the one without the cliffs and trees, which also became the one used for the stamp”.

the 1920s when she designed the stamp original in watercolour. She also devoted time to personally investigate the nooks and crannies of the building:

The log house in gingerbread style was built 1895–99 on a cliff above the harbour as summer villa for Karl Hällberg, a doctor at the spa resort in Mariehamn. After his death, the eagle’s nest, as the house was nicknamed, was bought by the Åland Yacht Club (ÅSS) headed by then commodore Carl Björkman to be used as clubhouse. In 1922, the building was moved to its current location on the shoreline in the Western harbour, where it serves as a popular summer restaurant today.

Tavern and clubhouse for a century

The ÅSS pavilion designed by Lars Sonck (1870–1956) is an example of his National Romantic style with influences from Karelia. Lars Sonck was one of Finland’s most highprofile architects in the early 1900s, and no other town has as many villas designed by the young Sonck as Mariehamn.

FDC ÅSS pavilion

The flag of the Åland Yacht Club (ÅSS) flies on the first day cover. It came into being when the club was founded in 1897 but became official only in 1906. It is thus older than the Finnish national flag. On the back of the cover, Carolina has painted a dramatic

sunset over the landing stage by the pavilion, which, as she noticed, featured Asiatic influences. The first day cancel shows architect Lars Sonck. The carved dragon head ornaments of the house can be studied on the stamp sheet.

“At the onset of the pandemic, I was charged with developing new concepts that would encourage “staycation” and give new holidaymakers reasons to visit Åland as tourists. On 25 July 2020, we inaugurated

“I was reminiscing my wonderful child hood summers in Åland when I drew the stamp. I hope it will inspire you to go out for a round of disc golf!”

Today, we find 14 courses of 9 to 18 holes on mainland Åland and in the archipelago. So far, the Åland Disc Golf Association owns the equipment, whereas most disc golf courses are built on privately owned land. All kinds of courses are avail able, located on knolls, in the forest, in open fields and in urban areas. The architect behind the majority of courses is Pasi Koivu, Finnish disc golf champion.

11 courses in 7 hours. Since last year, over 120 000 rounds of disc golf with some 6 million throws have been played in Åland”.

Illustrator Sanna Mander explains her thoughts about the design of the motif:

With a stamp designed by Finnish illustrator Sanna Mander, Åland Post takes aim at the growing sport disc golf on 25 March. Today, Åland has the highest density of disc golf courses in the world and an ambition of turning the island realm into the world’s largest disc golf park.

Disc golf attracts visitorsto Åland

In the summer of 1982, a frisbee-golf course was established in the Badhuspark en in Mariehamn on the initiative of Ålander Lasse Hellsten, who brought home the new sport following a year as exchange student in the USA. In 2022, the updated 9-hole course, one of the oldest active courses in Europe, celebrates its 40th anniversary. The stamp is a tribute to the happy 1980s and the anniversary of the course, showing the fifth disc golf basket on the Badhusberget in Mariehamn, overlooking the entrance to the western harbour.

Disc golf is the fastest growing sport in Finland, and the commitment to turn Åland into the world’s greatest disc golf park was initiated by Mats Adamczak, Chair of Åland Business Association:

Congratulate, cheer up or surprise with a card

Created by Åland illustrator Amanda Valkonen, four colourful postal stationery cards that will make your receivers feel good are issued on 25 March.

“I landed in a maritime theme because I wished to create something that felt “Ålandic”. My expression is rather playful, and I like to use bright colours. It was important to me that the cards appeal to a wide public but also feel invigorating,

Amanda Valkonen makes her debut as illustrator for Åland Post with a playful series of cards suitable for congratulations, party invitations, friendly greetings or personal love notes. The coastal characters are a common denominator. Amanda explains her choice of theme and concept:

happy and make you feel good. I think we need that, considering the worldwide situation in the recent years. So, I let playful characters convey and act out the message of the cards”.

“I’m curious about the world around me and it affects my work. All my life, I’ve loved to express myself creatively”, Amanda tells.

Pirkko Vahtero has designed over 140 Finnish stamps and is the artist behind the fishing boat motif. She is best known for the series of Åland churches and the anniver sary stamp Åland Autonomy 75 years from 1997. Her stamps have been chosen as the most beautiful of the year several times. This Fishing boat motif was issued on 2 January 1986.

Eeva Oivo has engraved and designed a large number of Finnish banknotes and stamps. Issued in September 1985, Outer archipelago was one in a series of nature scenery from Åland. The illustration shows the barren archipelago island Kökar. The stamp featuring Tufted duck is from the last series she created for Åland, including waterfowl Common eider and Velvet scoter, issued on 2 January 1987.
