1 February sees a new motif series for Åland Post’s franking labels when four common woodpeckers succeed the orchid series. Skilled animal and nature artist Bo Lundwall was the obvious choice of artist to capture the specific characters of the birds.
ADORNING THE 2019 FRANK ING labels are the great spotted wood pecker (Dendrocopos major), lesser spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor), greyheaded woodpecker (Picus canus) and black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius). Bo Lundwall chose to illustrate male birds because they are slightly more colourful with their red crowns and forehead patches. For variation, he illustrated the birds in dif ferent seasons. Woodpeckers are primarily resident birds.
THE GREAT SPOTTED woodpecker is the most common Åland species of wood peckers, breeding in all types of woodlands. It chisels into leafy trees to excavate nest holes. It has black and white plumage with
a bright red patch on the lower belly. Its diet consists mainly of insects and larvae, in the winter also seeds from coniferous cones.
THE LESSER SPOTTED wood pecker is our smallest woodpecker. The back is barred in black and white and only the male has a red crown. It chips away at rotten wood to find wood-boring larvae and it thrives in old leafy woodlands as does the grey-headed woodpecker. The latter is green and may easily be mistaken for the Euro pean green woodpecker, which is larger and does not appear in Åland. The grey-headed woodpecker chisels its nesting holes in old aspen at the forest edge.
POSTCARD, GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER €1.30 CODE: 352-201904
THE BLACK WOODPECKER is a species that has increased in numbers of late. In the motif it sits in a pine tree, together with aspen its preferred species of nesting tree. It digs out its favourite food, carpenter ants, of dead trees. The black woodpecker is a rowdy type of bird, and its drummings may be heard at long distances, lasting considerably longer than those of the grey-headed woodpecker. The great spotted woodpecker has the shortest drum roll.
THE NEW TYPE of self-adhesive frank ing labels was launched in 2018. A series consists of four labels of identical value but of four different motifs.
Sailing ships remained popular in Åland between the wars. Two of them, the schooner Vineta and 4-masted barque Parma, are brought back to life by artist Allan Palmer’s stamps issued on 1 February.
AFTER WORLD WAR I, seaborne trade enjoyed a boom that provided an opportunity for a short-lived renaissance of the building of sailing vessels in Åland.
THE LARGEST ÅLAND peasant shipping company of the inter-war period was Varvs- & Rederi Ab Viking founded in Saltvik in 1917. Viking purchased several Baltic sailing ships and planned to build two new ships, but only realized 3-masted schooner Vineta. Built in the Bay of Kvarnbo and launched in November 1919, she sailed the Baltic and North Seas for eight years. The ship ran aground in a winter storm and wrecked on Gotland. In the same year 1927, the Viking company was dissolved when the board deemed the era of smaller sailing ships over. The artist’s illustration of Vineta, with rain-soaked sails in a dead calm, being overhauled by a fully loaded steamship, is a reminder of the new times.
ONE OF THE LAST co-ownerships of Åland vessels emerged in 1931, when Åland captain Ruben de Cloux acquired the four-masted barque Parma from shipowner F. Laeisz of Hamburg. She was built in Glasgow in 1902 as Arrow. During her time under Åland flag, Parma was the world’s largest sailing cargo ship with a tonnage of over 5200 tons. The barque is famous for having made the fastest ever voyage in the 1900s’ wheat trade; in 1933, the passage to England took only 83 days with Captain de Cloux at the rudder, already then renowned for his fast sails. On the stamp, Allan has illus trated Parma on her record passage, sails unfurled and making 12-15 knots heading for the Cape Horn. The sailing era of the ship ended abruptly following an accident in Glasgow in 1936.

ON 8 MARCH, Åland Post focuses on Nordic skating, an increasingly popular rec reational winter activity. The winter season in Åland normally lasts from November until March or April. Skaters often follow shallow lakes on their first tours of the season. As the ice grows thicker around the coasts, skaters take trips on the estuaries and, in fine ice-winters, even out to sea.
LASSE KÄRKKÄINEN, the photog rapher behind the motif, is an ardent skater. He explains the attraction of Nordic skating: “It is multi-faceted and unpredictable. At times, it is an athletic feat, sometimes a journey of discovery, sometimes a spiritual experience. It’s the social encounter with
other skaters, nature, the winter light, the frictionless encounter of ice and blades.”
WITH A GRAPHICALLY streamlined image, Lasse wished to create a sense of open space in a setting of wide stretches and granite bedrock. He shot the photo of his two skating chums on an early day in April some years ago. In the photo we see Sven M Pettersson gliding ahead of Rickard Svanström during a 106 km long day trip on the ice off northern Geta, cruising between the islets on their way to the sea edge. Safety is crucial when tour skating. The first day cancel shows two vital items of safety equipment: ice picks and ice claws.

AURORA 8 March 2019 Ingmar Eriksson 100 000 €1.70
YOUR CHANCE OF experiencing the aurora borealis in Åland is pretty good from mid-August to April when nights are dark. This fascinating luminous phenomenon is featured on a stamp appearing on 8 March.
PHOTOGRAPHER Ingmar Eriksson is often out at night, up to 40 times in a year, to catch the northern lights. The stamp motif was shot on a late December night with the Notvik Tower, located in Sund near the Bomarsund fortress, appearing in the foreground. An excellent location to catch the luminous phenomenon, Ingmar reveals, explaining that heights with a clear view towards the north offers the best chance to see the lights.
ALBEIT AN EXPERIENCED photographer with photography as a hobby for more than 40 years, this is Ingmar’s first stamp. He chairs the Åland photo club Obscura and has taken many photos of nature, fishing and bicycling over the years, while freelancing as an Åland fishing guide. By profession, Ingmar is a masseur with his own praxis.
AURORAS APPEAR when sun par ticles collide with the earth’s atmosphere, resulting in the emission of light of varying colour and appearing in many forms such as arcs, rippling curtains or rays as featured in the first day cancel.

In 2019, 80 years have passed since Ålander Uno Ekblom set off on the voyage of his life, an extraordinary adventure. On 8 March, Åland Post commemorates his implausible achievement as the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean to the USA in a small rustic style boat.
UNO EKBLOM is the epitome of Åland enterprise. Born in 1905 in the village of Torp, Eckerö, he went to sea as a teen. Returning to his native village after a few years, one of his enterprises was operating a water taxi, transporting tourists by motor boat between the guesthouses in Eckerö and Mariehamn and, also, across the Sea of Åland to Sweden. At the same time, he nurtured a dream of America. Aiming to visit the New York World’s Fair, he planned to carry out the voyage by his own boat. His motor boat was built in Swedish Östham mar in 1936. Naming it Eckerö, he was, at the time, already planning for future long voyages and bad weather. Measuring 9.7 meter, the double-ended wooden boat was equipped with a hot-bulb engine that barely reached 10 horsepower. It had no spare engine and the technical equipment was modest.
ON 3 MAY 1939, he set off on his Atlantic crossing from Åland via Stockholm and Gothenburg, where his Swedish crew of two came on board. The two proved to be an encumbrance more than a help; one of them was continually seasick and the other was a heavy smoker, using up all the matches meant to light the engine. Two months after departure, Uno reached New York, creating quite a stir on both sides of the Atlantic. Some of the newspaper articles adorn the centre of the stamp sheet.
BECAUSE OF THE WAR, Uno remained in New York until 1950, when he settled in the state of Oregon. In 1955, he was found drowned on the coast together with his wrecked boat. The stamp shows a collage of photos from the photo album Uno left behind.
