“I’m always equally proud to be commis sioned to make a stamp. Getting everything right is the challenge. The position of every little berry matters because of the small format. Anything can happen during the course of the work. A special memory is when my husband and I carried a rowing boat through a forest to reach the swamp to photograph a blooming yellow water lily for a 2013 stamp issue. The boat was both unstable and leaking, but I got my pictures!”

The small European postal administrations chose locally produced beverages as theme for the 2022 series of Sepac stamps. Sea-buckthorn being Åland’s own super berry, the Åland contribution gives you a real vitamin kick. The day of issue is 6 September and photographer is Tiina Tahvanainen.

Åland is one of a few areas in Finland where sea-buckthorn grows in the wild. The wild shrubs grow in dense stands and thrive best on stone and gravel beaches. The thorny branches make the berries dif ficult to pick. The small orange, juicy and sour berries of the sea-buckthorn ripen in the autumn and contain high amounts of beneficial vitamins, antioxidants, and fats. Squeezed from the berries, the raw juice is used as such, but also as the base of jams, marmalades, syrups, and ice cream. The fruit pomace is also used in various products. Sea-buckthorn beverages are a common sight in Åland, sold on markets in the autumn and in most supermarkets.

Illustrator Peter Bergström thought long and hard prior to accepting the challenge of illustrating the blood-sucking arachnid:
On a background of elongated spirochetes of the bacterium borrelia, the stamp shows an adult female tick and a schematic picture of antibodies, which laboratory technicians try to detect when analysing blood samples. The spirochetes are also reminiscent of the swaying grass in which ticks often sit, waiting for people and animals to pass.

On 6 September, Åland Post spotlights the research into tick-borne diseases that are increasing worldwide. Åland has one of the highest incidences of infections. Åland researchers have made important contributions to this field of research and developed much of the diagnostics used today.

Åland is a high-risk area for tick-borne diseases, which occur in large parts of the world and have become a public health problem in both the USA and Europe. Lyme disease is the world’s most common tickrelated disease. Just under 2% of the Åland population are infected every year. Another pest that ticks can carry is the TBE virus, known since the 1950s and, in Finland, also called the Kumlinge disease after the island on which it was first detected. Research in Åland started in 1984 and has been dominated by finding a reliable method for detecting active Lyme disease.

Borrelia burgdorferi is the name of the bacterium that ticks can carry and transmit through bites. The common tick Ixodes ricinus thrives in moist and shady places with dense undergrowth. The best way to protect yourself from ticks is to wear light clothing when in damp terrain and to keep the grass short. Still, less than 10% of ticks carry bacteria and the infection is not

Adorning the first day cover is a map of the tick’s distribution by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Populations of ticks have been found in the pink areas, while the yellow parts show new areas of spread. Milder winters are believed to be a cause.

The odyssey of the Chinese horoscope animals in Åland continues. On this year’s miniature sheet interpreting the Year of the Hare, artist Martin Mörck has illustrated hares in their winter-attire. The day of issue is 20 October.

white snow was the challenge. I thought of Bruno Liljefors and got to work. One of the modern cliff houses was to appear in the background, so, I used the reflections of the sea in the windows. I laid out a horizontal line and drew the water a little bluer than it might be at this time of year and a faint winter sun. It worked well as a contrast, and I could also use the blue tone for shadows in the snow. I gathered the hares in a small-talking group down by the reeds. The reeds became the warm element, along with the calligraphy. This time, there were no hidden details to discover, but I am very pleased with the result!”
For over 30 years, we also find, as far north as possible on mainland Åland, the Havsvidden hotel establishment with a guest harbour, hotel, and restaurant. In the 2000s, the resort was expanded with mod ern cliff villas designed by architect Thomas Sandell. Blending into the landscape among the red granite cliffs, the 40 cliff houses are equipped with 1–3 bedrooms, sauna, large terraces, and panoramic windows with sweeping views of the North Sea, which is part of the Åland Archipelago Sea. Deer and hares looking for food often roam around.

“I started by researching which visual elements would be suitable for traditional stamps. I made several sketches, but those with small gnomes quickly became favour ites, so, they became my focus point for the stamp motifs. Pondering on different settings for the gnomes, I liked the Finström church and Sälskär lighthouse. I made 3D models of the church and lighthouse on my computer to better understand their forms.”
The Nordic gnome has some features of the garden gnome. The Swedish word “tomte” derives from “tomt”, i.e., a plot you own. In Nordic folklore, the garden gnome is a small grumpy humanoid creature who protects your plot and livestock. Based on the canonized bishop of St. Nicholas, Santa Claus did not appear in the Nordic countries until the late 1800s.
Christmas starts early with the release of Christmas seals and stamps on 20 October. Finnish illustrator Sami Saramäki has created a retroinspired and poetic Christmas series.
For the 2022 Christmas stamps, illustra tor Sami Saramäki created a modern version of the classic gnomes. On one stamp, the gnomes are on their way to Åland with the Christmas mail, guided by the lighthouse on the island Sälskär, located northwest of main Åland. On the other stamp, they have taken a break from their delivery round at the 13th century Finström church, dedi cated to St. Michael.

Associated with many traditions, Christmas is also the holiday when we send most greetings by post. Christmas cards are known since the 1800s. Scandinavians’ image of Christmas celebrations has been influenced by the card motifs. Many Christ mas symbols have been around since the first cards were imported from England and Germany, introducing foreign traditions such as gnomes, Christmas tree, and presents to the Nordic peoples. Swedish illustrator Jenny Nyström’s illustrations of gnomes and Åland descendant Haddon Sundblom’s drawings of Santa Claus in the 1930s have also contributed to our image of Santa and his little helpers.

The beneficiary of the 2022 Christmas seal grant is “Fältarna”, a team of commu nity-based street workers working with and for teenagers aged 13–17. The youth work ers strive to create safe connections and be a continuous support on the youth’s terms, and also serve as a link between parents, school, social services, and police. Visiting schools, youth centres and parent meet ings and organizing youth groups, they offer teenagers an opportunity to discuss subjects such as domestic violence, drugs, alcohol, bullying, love worries, and loneliness. The grant will be used for study materials and activities for the teens.

“For some reason, I’m often asked to illustrate winterscapes, but I don’t mind. I like winter, so, this assignment suited me perfectly,” Sami says.
As in previous years, the Christmas seals are sold in sheets of 20 self-adhesive seals that you can use to decorate Christmas cards and parcels. Buying Christmas seals, you also support socially beneficial activi ties in Åland. Over the years, the sale of Christmas seals has financially contributed to the Åland Children’s Fund, the voluntary fire brigade, defibrillators in Åland, and the food service Matbanken. The sale in 2021 generated a grant of €2500, awarded to the Åland Group for Borrelia Research. With several research projects underway, the grant will be used in the work to understand Lyme disease and TBE and find methods for diagnostics and treatment.
This year’s funds will be granted to youth work. The 2021 survey “Health at school” reveals that an increasing number of young people aged 14 and older are experiencing a deterioration of their mental and physical state of health. The results also show that young people in Åland feel significantly worse than those in Finland.

We are looking for three summer cottages for three stamps. The photo competition runs from 1 July till 31 July 2022.
There are about 9,000 Åland holiday homes, privately owned or part of holiday villages and campsites. Owners of and tour ists to holiday homes are among the most important tourist groups in Åland, and their contribution to the Åland economy is of great importance.

Your Åland summer cottage – our next stamp?
The love of cottages and holiday homes is widespread among Ålanders‘ and Nordic peoples. Your cottage may be the link to your countryside roots or your oasis away from the bustle of city life.
Upload a photo of your summer nest at www.alandstamps.com. Fill in your details and briefly motivate why your proposal should be portrayed on a stamp.
Åland Post plans to issue a stamp booklet featuring summer cottages in June 2023. You now have the chance to see your Åland summer paradise depicted on a stamp. Submit your photo by 31 July.
How do we select the winners?

5 stamp booklets with the new motifs. The three winning cottages will be portrayed by artist Lars Sjööblom, an experienced stamp artist from Sweden. His illustrations will be printed on the Åland stamps to be issued in the form of a stamp booklet on 9 June 2023.

Known for his engraved stamps, Swedish artist Lars Sjööblom is also a skilled illustrator and graphic designer. He has designed several Åland stamps. His latest work for the 2019 Europa theme National birds showed a white-tailed eagle.

The beloved summer cottage - How does your Åland summer paradise look?
Small or large, old or new, borrowed or rented - all cottages are welcome to take part in the competition. You will find the competition form and rules at www.alandstamps.com
The competition is organized in collabora tion with local newspaper Nya Åland and tourist organization Visit Åland which are also represented on the jury that selects the three winning cottages. The jury assesses what makes a particular cottage special and suitable as a stamp motif. Therefore, it is im portant that you, in your motivation, describe what the cottage means to you. The final choice of winners is made by Åland Post’s Stamp Committee.
