The sailing ship event The Tall Ships Races returns to Åland this summer. Many will still remember the 1988 festival when Mariehamn last hosted the race that celebrates its 65th anniversary this year. Who could have known in 2018, when the town applied to host the race, that the world would be in the middle of a pandemic as the event approaches. At the time of writing, however, the organizers are hoping that the event can go ahead as planned and in accordance with current restrictions.

On 23 July, Åland Post takes part in this year’s sailing ship event The Tall Ships Races in Mariehamn. The two stamp issues pay homage to sailing ship traditions and invite you into the fellowship of the festival. Juha Pykäläinen created the classic postage stamp art.

Juha took the adventure, fellowship and friendship as starting point for the stamp:

From last time, stamp artist Juha Pykäläinen also had many fine memories to take inspiration from for this year’s stamp issues.“Iremember sitting in a tiny boat at sea, painting as much as I possible could during the race. When asked to illustrate The Tall Ships Races, I was delighted, as I recog

nized the feeling of joy and delight and, from that moment, I knew that I wished to convey those emotions in the new stamps.”

The Tall Ships Races is a race for wind jammers and large sailboats. It is arranged in the Baltic Sea about every four years. Organisers of the Races are Sail Training International with a mission to, above all, encourage young people to learn to sail and, at the same time, embrace international friendships. Consequently, at least 50% of the crews must be young people aged 15 to 25.

The sailing ships arrive at Mariehamn from Tallinn on 22 July and depart for their third and last race leg to Szczecin on 25 July. For two days in between, the Western Harbour and large parts of the Esplanade, the lime tree avenue in Mariehamn, will be turned into a festival area with maritime activities, musical performances, and sale of merchandise. Sightseers may admire all the sailing ships in the harbour, from large square-rigged ships to single-masted sail boats. More than 60 sailing ships and boats in four different size classes from several countries have already signed up.

A port area teeming with visiting sailing ships was also the natural choice of motif for the miniature sheet, which includes museum ship Pommern, reminiscent of Åland sailing ship traditions. Juha explains:

“All ships featured are modeled after photos. I’ve concentrated more on the feeling of each vessel than on details. Over the years, I’ve used various techniques to illustrate my stamp designs. In this case, I decided on a traditional oil painting. In my experience, it’s a good technique to create that genuine and vivid impression.”

For you, who enjoy sailing ships, we also offer a maximum card and a postcard

The maximum card shows the sailing ships reaching their goal in Mariehamn. The pilot station Kobba klintar appears in the background, while the rocks in the fore ground are part of the islet of Hertronklubb. A memorial stands on the islet reminiscent of twelve men who drowned in the sinking of iron barque Plus, which was heading home to Mariehamn for Christmas on 14 December 1933. The 70-meter-long ship still lies at a depth of 20–30 meters next to the islet and is, today, an excursion destina tion for scuba divers.

The postcard shows sailing ship Albanus having just passed lighthouse Marhällan on its way to Mariehamn. Albanus was launched on 24 July 1988 during the Tall Ships festivities attracting a crowd that had never been seen in Åland before. She was built on the model of a galleass of the same name from Äppelö, Åland. The launch of a new reconstruction of an older Åland vessel is scheduled for this year’s event; the clinker-built yacht Alanta is being built in the traditional Åland way, entirely in pine, on a model from the early 1800s.

On 20 October, we start gearing up for Christmas. This year’s Christmas stamps will help you to get in the mood. Stamp debuting illustrator Rebecca Elfast has designed the charming stamps.

How do you get into the Christmas mood? Artist Rebecca Elfast pondered on this question as she set out to design this year’s Christmas stamps. She chose some of the things that she herself appreciates about Christmas:

With the 2020 Christmas stamps, Rebecca makes her debut as a stamp artist.

“The Christmas stamps are about things that contribute to a cosy Christmas spirit; carols, togetherness, a decorated tree with nice presents underneath, and tangled strings of lights.”

Christmas is gift-giving and caroling

“I always start with handmade sketches but complete the motifs digitally. This way I have greater flexibility and can test various alternatives and compare them. I wanted the stamps and seals to be playful, in strong and merry colours that may not be entirely the traditional Christmas colours.”

“Designing stamps has always been a dream assignment to me. I’ve not collected stamps, but I always keep track of the Swedish collections and am particularly de lighted when I get pretty stamps on my mail.”

Designing stamps does not otherwise differ from other assignments. Rebecca describes her design process:

Rebecca’s Christmas seals illustrating winter games will be issued on the same day as the Christmas stamps. Read more on the following page.

“I enjoy all the preparations for Christ mas, the music, the ornaments and the food. With a three-year-old at home, Christmas crafts have become a key activity. Of course, I want her early memories of Christmas to be just as lovely and magical as mine! Otherwise, family is most import ant, getting together, socializing and sharing a good time.”

The members of the ÅGBR cooperate with researchers in Finland, Sweden and other EU countries and work entirely for free in their spare time. Their research concen trates on tick-borne infectious diseases such as Lyme borreliosis and TBE (tick-borne encephalitis), also known as “Kumlinge disease”, named after the location, where it was first detected. Their research has con tributed to the development of diagnostics and treatment methods that have gained international recognition. The ÅGBR plans to use the Christmas seal grant for studies of the immune system reactions following a tick-bite.

Play and seriousness combined

When you buy the 2021 Christmas seals, you also support Lyme research. The 2021 grantee is the Åland Group for Borrelia Research (ÅGBR), a network of medical researchers who study tick-borne infectious diseases in Åland.

As previously mentioned, Rebecca Elfast has illustrated this year’s Christmas seals and stamps. The Christmas seals are full of verve, showing all the fun you can have in the snow; go sledding, make snow-angles, build a snowman or, why not, taste the snowflakes. The Christmas seals perfectly match the Christmas stamps, and you can use the self-adhesive seals as decoration on your presents or as letter closers.

Åland equals that of Old Lyme, Connecticut, where the disease was once detected. In Åland, 200–250 persons are infected with Lyme borreliosis each year. Still, less than 10 percent of ticks carry the borrelia bacterium and an infection is not always developed.

With this year’s Christmas seals, Åland Post wishes to elicit your childlike heart as well as contribute to a charitable cause. The grantee of this year’s Christmas seal grant is the Åland Group for Borrelia Research. The issue date is 20 October.

The number of cases of tick-borne diseases is increasing in the world, seeing that ticks spread to new regions. The incidence in

Since the issue of the first Åland Christmas seals in 1993, Åland Post has supported Åland organizations and development pro jects with over €200 000. For the alloca tion of the 2020 Christmas seal grant, we tried a different approach. The public was given the opportunity to nominate an Åland organization worth a financial contribution for its activities. Among the nominees, the Stamp Committee of Åland Post chose Åland Fountainhouse r.f. – Clubhouse Pelaren as receiver of the €1500 grant in support of their important work for people with mental illness. Established in Åland in 2010, Pelaren is a clubhouse for per sons who have or have had mental illness. Pelaren is part of the worldwide organization Clubhouse International.

in the 1800s. Margit Holmberg, who in herited the two-storey house with the porch in 1975, shares the history of the house:

Artist Martin Mörck is closely linked with the Åland zodiac series. The design process is both demanding and stimulating, Martin says, describing the challenge of creating this year’s miniature sheet:

Cozy day on the porch with beloved “house-tigers”

“I wanted a composition that was both indoors and outdoors and chose a sun room with playing cats. The tranquil Åland scenery appears in the windows and the summer light shines in through the halfopen door. I drew the porch and the cats separately because I wanted to be sure to retain the cats’ soft fur. In the sheet, a cat peeks in, hoping to join the playing lords of the house, the “tigers”. On the wall hangs a Chinese poem about tigers, that roughly translates into “terrifying and proud, power and strength”.

“The house at Västergård’s dates back to 1786, and the porch was added in the late 1800s. My grandfather Torvald Sundblom bought the house in 1921 and let it to his sister, who ran a boarding house until the Second World War.”

The porch is a favourite spot, Margit confirms:“Inthe late 1980s, I ran a summer café here, and the porch was frequently used for birthdays, crayfish parties and wed dings. Nowadays, we use it as dining room throughout the summer. At the far end hangs a hammock for rest and the children have a play area, so that everyone finds room. House cats have lived here, too, but none since the children moved out.”

The original porch is located in the Västernäs district of southern Mariehamn. The rich filigree of the windows is character istic of Åland porches that became popular

“I greatly enjoyed designing this delightful series. I’m very pleased that it was so well received”, says a delighted Allan Palmer.

Allan Palmer, one of the most prolific Åland stamp artists, designed his first stamps al ready in 1988. In addition to motifs related to shipping, he has created stamps featuring lighthouses, flowers, and folk costumes. Allan Palmer is the artist behind the six-year series Sailing ships that has won the vote for the most beautiful Åland stamp not only once but no less than three times. Already in 2015, the first two stamps in the series, sailing ships Leo and Lemland, gained the collectors’ favour. The following title was taken by ships Albania and Atlas in 2018, while sailing ships Viking and Mozart com pleted the winning streak in 2020. A win well worth celebrating, so, business area manager Eivor Granberg surprized the artist with a diploma and a flower bouquet.
