PRODUCING A STAMP BOOK
Publishing a book demands time as well as diligent planning. Choosing an author and translators, deciding on the number of chapters, themes, pictorial material and design are only some of the aspects to be considered when producing an interesting and relevant book.
We wish to treat you to diverse and varied experi ences, which generate new knowledge as well as insight into life in Åland. I’m pleased to present the new biennial stamp book “A story through Åland stamps 2018-2019” in this brochure.
HEIDEMARIE ERIKSSON STAMPS MANAGER ÅLAND

The stamp book is for you who, in addition to the stamps, wish to get better acquainted with your area of collection. In this edition, you glide across the vastness of ice, hear the roar of the sea, delight in the activities of enthusiastic house-builders and veteran motorcycle devotees and meet venturesome Atlantic Ocean travellers and passionate postcrossers.
The layout of this 102 pages hardcover coffee table book has been renewed in cooperation with Åland bureau of communication Strax. Graphic artist Sandra Henriksson, the artist

behind the 2018 Europa stamp, is responsi ble for the new design. As usual, all the 2018 and 2019 stamps, miniature sheets, booklets and franking labels are included in the book, mounted in plastic mounts. Each chapter is concluded with a comprehensive summary in English, German and Finnish. The edition is limited. Thus, you would be wise to pre-order your copy of this year’s magnificent book. Or, why not, check out the offer on page 18.

Uncover island province behind the stamps November sees a much-anticipated book release when Åland stamps tell new stories from your area of collection.
With a stamp booklet issued on 20 September, Åland Post focuses on one of the largest events in Åland, the Harvest Festival. Photographer Therese Andersson has captured the delightful moments from the festival.
HARVEST FESTIVAL

- THE PEAK OF AUTUMN
THE ÅLAND HARVEST FESTI

VAL has been a recurrent event since 1998. Arranged in the third weekend of September, it has grown to become one of the largest and most popular Åland events, attracting Ålanders as well as tourists. A record 16000 visitors were registered in 2018.

THE HARVEST FESTIVAL aims at demonstrating life in the countryside and enhancing confidence in Åland produce. Some 50 farms, food producers, proces sors and local artisans take part every year, offering local craft and delicacies as well as activities for the entire family. Jump ing in the haystacks, as Li Weckman and Emma Styrström do in one of the stamps and mingling with farm animals are popular activities. One stamp shows Clara the cow who likes apples.
THERESE ANDERSSON , from Åland but with maternal roots in North Karelia, makes her debut as a stamp photographer with the 2019 booklet. She reveals: “I’ve shot photos at the Harvest Festival for many years. Making the most of the wonderful light and September colours, I aim at catch ing the joy, encounters and happenings, the love of a living countryside.”
FIVE YEARS AGO, Therese switched from systems development to freelancing photography, a decision she has not regret ted: “My work is my passion, I’m privileged to say, and I get to meet many fantastic people and companies through my work.”
NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY is an interest, but Therese prefers to photograph people and is currently working on a project portraying people in Åland folk dresses.

This year’s two sparkling Christmas stamps appear on 24 October. Through the versa tile use of watercolour, Swedish artist and summer Ålander Anette Gustafsson has explored the magic of snow crystals.
CAPTURING THE FROSEN BEAUTY OF SNOW CRYSTALS

SWEDISH ARTIST Anette Gustafsson was pleased and exited to receive the com mission to illustrate this year’s Christmas stamps on a snow crystal theme. However, the mission proved to be more tricky than expected: “I worked with the illustrations for many weeks and experienced a great challenge as I had to adapt my style to the expectations on the illustrations. I usually seek out my paintings, scrubbing for light and expression but, now, more contrast, colour, detail and an entirely different com position were required. In the end, I was very satisfied with my paintings!”
ANETTE TAKES inspiration for her paintings mainly from nature and, in the summer time, you find her on the island of Rödhamn just outside of Mariehamn, where she paints as she and her family run the

guest harbour. Winter, she confides, is mostly a period of waiting for spring and the open sea: “I enjoy the sparkling white and the snow, but I long for the return of the light.”
THE CHRISTMAS STAMPS are Anette’s third stamp commission for Åland Post. Her previous designs issued in 2009 and 2011 were also watercolour illustrations. She describes her preference for water-col our as a way of expression: “Watercolour is a divine musical material allowing playfulness in the process with a dash of surprise and spontaneity that I find enticing. I find myself in a nearly meditative state when I paint. I’m not tempted by the more exact or detailed painting, but I’m challenged by capturing the ambiance and light.”

On 24 October, the Year of the Rat is in line to ap pear in the zodiac stamp series from Åland Post. Martin Mörck’s charming little mice invite you to visit magical Åland.
ARCHIPELAGO MICE ILLUSTRATE YEAR OF THE RAT
THE SIXTH animal to be portrayed in the series of Chinese zodiac signs is the rat. Artist Martin Mörck has created an illustra tion of Åland that is straight out of a fairy tale. The cute mice wallow in the vegeta tion, contently snacking on blackberries.

MARTIN CHOSE TO base his il lustration on the yellow-necked mouse and the harvest mouse. Easily recognizable is the harvest mouse’s round breeding nest, which is composed of grass and more resembles a bird’s nest. The existence of the harvest mouse in Åland was discovered as recently as in 2015, when a dead young mouse was found on the beach of the archipelago island of Enklinge in Kumlinge.
THE HARVEST MOUSE is one of the smallest rodents in the world, weighing
as little as 7 grams. Adult mice are reddish brown with a lighter underpart. Its prehen sile tail is longer than the body. Typically found in crop fields and meadows, it also thrives in the humidity of reed grass and sea banks.
THE YELLOW-NECKED MOUSE is the most common mouse in Åland. The fur is yellow-brown with a white underpart. It is nocturnal and an excellent climber. It often lives near the forest verge, but it will enter summer cottages in the winter.
THE UNIQUE Åland archipelago nature forms the setting of the miniature sheet. We see a fishing hamlet with simple cottages used in the old days by archipelago dwellers when fishing herring during the summer.
