ÅLAND POST 25 YEARS

25 years ago, we broke away from Finnish Posti to become an independent postal administration. Our first own stamps had been issued already nine years earlier but, as of 1993, we took charge of both the issuing of Åland stamps and the distribution of mail in Åland. It has been 25 successful years and, despite external conditions dramatically changing with digitalization and Internet, we still see a vital 25-year old operating the postal service in Åland. On 18 September, we present two crackling stamps, celebrating the achievements of Åland pyrotechnicians JoHo Pyro in the art of pyrotechnics. This August, the team engages in competition with the very best at the International Fireworks Festival in Cannes.

WORLD CLASS FIREWORKS

JOHAN HOLLÄNDER has been involved with fireworks for as long as he remembers. Prior to starting his own busi ness JoHo Pyro in Mariehamn in 2004, he freelanced for many years as a pyrotech nician for various Swedish companies. A firefighter by profession, Johan still works as such between his fireworks commissions.

SPECIALIZING in pyro-musical shows, JoHo Pyro’s breakthrough came in 2006 when they won the Finnish Fireworks Championship. Subsequently, Johan and

his team have lined up fine results in a number of international competitions, e.g. in Berlin and Warsaw. Invited to participate in the 2016 International Fireworks Festival in Cannes, JoHo Pyro made a grand slam winning both the Silver Vestal and the Public Prize. No Nordic team has previously participated in this prestigious competition arranged since 1967.

BOTH STAMP MOTIFS show images from the Cannes show, Johan’s greatest achievement so far. But new successes may

follow. Every fourth year, the Silver Vestal winners compete for the Gold Vestal in Cannes. Thus, JoHo Pyro gets to compete against six other winners to designate the very best of the best.

SHOWTIME IS on 15 August, and Johan’s objective is to win, obviously: “Cannes is impressive, incredibly impres sive, so, winning would be awesome. But, knowing that we’re competing against teams with mind-blowing resources and fantas tic designers, we’re in for a tough battle. I keep my feet firmly on the ground. We’ll do everything in our power to display Åland and Finland in our show. Still, it is a competition and the only way to approach it is with a winner’s attitude; we hope and believe that we’ll place among the top three.”

A PYRO-MUSICAL show requires a great deal of preparations, particularly in connection with competitions that present 15-30 minute-long shows. The fireworks must fit the music and all pyrotechnical pieces must interact.

“I listen to the music over and over again, keeping it on my mobile phone, in the car, yes, everywhere. I listen to simply get a sense of the mood, to find suitable effects to match the music with the fireworks, sort of

like a marriage,” Johan explains.

IN PRINCIPLE, preparations for Cannes have been ongoing since the 2016 win and, today, Johan and his crew feel ready to take on the world’s leading pyrotechnical firms. His team counts 15 persons; during competitions, however, between 4 and 10 staffers participate depending on the assistance supplied by the organizer.

JOHO PYRO’S most recent commis sion was to round off the Finland 100 years celebrations in Helsinki on New Year’s Eve 2017, a show that included music by Jean Sibelius and from the movie about the crofter’s wife Stormskärs Maja. Johan finds choosing a favourite fireworks show difficult:

“The win when we first entered the Finn ish competition scene was a magnificent feeling seeing that we were the dark horse. Still, the silver prize at our first world fire works championship was equally awesome since our team was entirely unexpected on the winners’ stand.”

A SPARKLING CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS are featured on this year’s Åland Christmas stamps. The Christmas tree is the best known Christmas decoration of today, so even in Åland. Serving as protection against malevolence and evil spirits, decorating your home with live spruce has been a tradition for hundreds of years. With roots in Germany, the custom of erecting a decor ated tree did not become common in Åland until the second half of the 1800s.

THE EARLIEST Christmas decorations were candles and edible figures made from bread, apples and sweets. During the latter half of the 1800s, decorations made from paper, wood and other types of material in the form of stars, garlands and other figures began appearing. In the 1900s, the range of Christmas decorations increased, Germany being the prime exporter; glass baubles in particular were highly valued.

Tinsel stars quickly became popular when they first appeared on the market, and a large star is often placed in the top of the tree. Today, the heart is another common type of Christmas decoration but, previously, it mainly appeared as pleated wicker baskets. Candles were otherwise the most important type of Christmas decoration. Prior to the introduction of electrical Christmas lights, the tree was illuminated by candles. The 1920s saw the introduction of light strands, the design of which has basically remained unchanged.

EMELIE BANG (previously E. Hage), resident of Stockholm since many years, has designed several Åland stamps, the most recent being the 2014 Christmas stamp. She also created this year’s colourful Christmas seals presented in the next magazine.

Worlds of music and philately meet

Well-known to many collectors, artist Martin Mörck’s stamp motifs are now successful also in China. On 1 November, we welcome his latest miniature sheet featuring cute Åland forest pigs.

MEET MARTIN’S ADORABLE PIGS

THE YEAR OF THE PIG is in turn to be depicted in the series of stamps illustrating the Chinese zodiac signs. Once again, Åland Post has involved expert Swedish stamp artist Martin Mörck in the production of an appealing miniature sheet.

TO MOST COLLECTORS , Martin is a well-known stamp artist and engraver. In recent years, he has attracted attention also among Chinese collectors, initially because he worked as engraving instructor at the Chinese stamp printing house PSPB. Åland Post’s first Zodiac issue in 2014 featur ing Åland sheep was, in fact, his students’ graduation project.

SINCE THEN, Martin has created some 17 Chinese stamps. “The series of portraits

of European composers was particularly interesting to create”, Martin relates. “I now also have non-stamp commissions, work ing for manufacturers of traditional Chinese medicine with projects such as bottle etiquettes and porcelain.”

THE 2018 MINIATURE SHEET is Martin’s third design for the Åland zodiac series and his style seems familiar.

“My years in China have given me greater understanding for the taste of collectors, and I’ve tried to interlink these preferences with an Åland perspective and my own style. I chose to create the pigs as communicating and cute, a style that is popular there. I also found inspiration from the photos I received from the Åland pig safari; they focus on the intelligence and curiosity of the pigs”, Martin explains.

THE FOREST PIGS of Nygård’s pig farm in the village of Mångstekta served as models. The owners, Andreas Nordlund and Ronja Brenner, raise outdoor pigs for meat production and also offer pig safaris in the summer when the pigs are treated to apples among other foods. On a daily basis, their food mostly consists of grain and stale bread, but their favourite meal is boiled potatoes.

IN THE DESIGN, Martin has included pleasant little details for you to discover;

the number eight used to illustrate the curly tails symbolizes happiness and prosperity in traditional Chinese culture, whereas the character for “fu” on the barn door symbol izes blessings, happiness and good fortune.

THE CHINESE SIGNS for the Year of the Pig reappearing on the miniature sheet and maximum cards were formed by Zhen Jia Hong, a skilful Chinese calligrapher and popular stamp artist.

Åland Post celebrates 25 years of independence

With a special cancel, Åland Post celebrates its 25th anniversary as an independent postal administration in connection with the local customer event on 7 November. With the revised Åland Autonomy Act of 1 January 1993, Åland obtained the right to establish an inde pendent postal administration with the Åland Parliament as sole owner. Åland Post took over the entire planning and edition of Åland stamps as well as the adhering service to collectors from the Finnish postal administration. Today, Åland Post is a limited company with close to 240 staffers.

PAYMENT

Orders are delivered together with an invoice. The amount due appears from the invoice. If your balance does not cover the full amount of your delivery, your order will still be executed; however, we reserve the right to demand pre-payment.

Make payments to your account at any time and keep a balance to pay for future deliveries. Stating your Åland customer number, please direct your payment to one of the bank accounts mentioned below.
