Åland laid waste by war

Sources: ”Ofärdsår på Åland”, The Åland Islands Emigrant Institute, 2020; ”Ett svunnet Åland” by Håkan Skogsjö, 2010
With Finland already conquered in the summer of 1714, Russia attacked Åland in August. Villages were burned down and looted and several hundred Ålanders, mostly women and children who did not escape in time, were captured and sold as slaves. The attack was not unexpected. Sweden had been at war against Denmark-Norway, Poland-Saxony and Russia since 1700. Consequently, Åland was already on a war footing, and Åland boatmen were commis sioned into the Swedish archipelago fleet. Still, most Ålanders had stayed at home to salvage the harvest, but they now fled by the skin of their teeth across the sea. Stories told by refugees from Finland, passing on their flight to Sweden, created great fear of the enemy. Everyone who could afford to flee did so, especially officials and priests, but also peasants, except for the islanders on Kökar. The island being of no strategic importance to the occupying Russian regime, they were left in peace.
Price: €2.80 Code: 416-000414

Peace was finally made in 1721, and most islanders returned in the following spring. Heavy work lay ahead; overgrown fields and meadows, stolen or feral cattle, houses burnt to the ground, demolished or in ruins. Only towards the end of the 1700s did Åland again have the same population as before the Great Northern War.
Most refugees ended up in the Stockholm and Lake Malar archipelagos. Little aid was given to refugees who largely depended on the generosity of local residents. Those set tling by the coast could make a living from fishing and seal hunting, but many suffered great hardship during their stay in Sweden.
FDC Great Northern War 300 years
On 7 May, we commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Great Northern War, one of the worst disasters to strike Åland. For eight years, Åland lay desolate. Designed by Carl-Johan Listherby, the stamp visualises the mass exodus and the homecoming after the peace in 1721.

Carl-Johan loves creative challenges
6 • ÅLAND POST FRIMÄRKEN
Working on the design of the 2021 stamp theme The Great Northern War 300 years resulted in several drafts, some of which you can view on the next page. He recounts:
“The creative challenge was to produce a story in multiple steps, but all in one illustra tion. I made different attempts involving mirroring and rotations before I thought of

As director and commercial designer, he takes on projects that include everything from film to illustration. Not only has he directed many commercials for brands such as IKEA, Lindex and Spotify, but also music videos for artists like Benjamin Ingrosso and Kampferdrops. He has also been involved in the graphic and visual work for various television and film productions such as the TV-series The Bridge.
Since a few years back, Carl-Johan lives in Mariehamn again. Since 2014, he is also a member of Åland Post’s Stamp Advisory Board where he, given his expertise in storytelling and background in art direction, contributes with ideas and suggestions for stamp motifs. In 2016, he designed his first Åland stamp on the “Think Green” Europatheme, a literal interpretation of the theme.
“This way of working – first coming up with a creative idea and then choosing the technique that best moves it forward – is exactly how I prefer to work. If it means working in a technique I’ve never tested before, it only makes the process more fun and exciting.”
Working with paper as material, cutting out paper silhouettes, which he would edit on the computer, was a new approach, but he gladly accepted the challenge:

letting layers of depth move the story within the image. Once I’d thought of it, I relatively quickly realized that paper, and the natural thickness of various types of paper, was a suitable technique for this particular idea.”
Here are some early sketches for the stamp issue. Below you see a symbolic image that may be rotated 180 degrees. On one half is an island with a budding tree illustrating hope. The other half shows a boat with refugees.

Swedish nature and animal artist Bo Lundwall’s detailed stamp shows the moor frog in its shimmering colour splendour. Åland Post’s contribution to the 2021 Europa stamp theme Endangered wildlife will be issued on 7 May.

Five species of amphibians live in Åland. An inventory last year found that the moor frog was the least observed amphibian, but it was seen all over mainland Åland, researcher at Nåtö Biological Station Tom Hoogesteger tells us. The protected moor frog (Rana arvalis) thrives in humid areas and breeds between March and June.
He painted the moor frog in profile to illus trate its characteristics, a pointed nose and dark face. The blue tone of the male during breeding varies greatly, so, Bo chose the loveliest turquoise blue. He is pleased with how the colours on the stamp turned out.
Bo Lundwall always starts by studying the animal in question, and he has the selected stamp format in mind even before sketching.
Bo’s friend, zoologist Torkel Hagström, who luckily proved to be an expert on frogs, helped him to ensure that the details were correct. He made sure that Bo’s design for the first day cancel appears correct; com pared to the common frog, the moor frog’s forearm has larger and harder nuptial pads.
“I spent two spring days by a lake in Tin nerö oak forest near Linköping and studied the frogs during mating season, making many sketches to have as reference. There were probably over 100 frogs and they sounded like a chorus. But they were also incredibly shy; the slightest movement from me, and they hid under the water,” Bo says.

The Parliament installs the Government, which prepares and executes business that falls within the domains of the autonomy. The Speaker proposes a Premier, as a rule from the party with most votes in the elec tion. The Government has 5-8 members including the Premier.

In the most recent legislative election in 2019, the Åland Centre became the largest party. Party chair Veronica Thörnroos (born 1962 in Brändö) got the majority of votes and today heads the Government of Åland.
“When shooting portraits, you must cre ate a relationship with whomever you’re por traying, make the person feel at ease and, of course, think of the light. It was important to me to do the ladies and the office justice through dignified and powerful portraits. Luckily, all four Premiers were as motivated as I to create fine portraits!”

Choosing a few key events from the his tory of autonomy wasn’t easy, artist Jonas Wilén

The celebration of the centenary of Åland autonomy begins on 9 June. Åland Post joins in the festivities, and this year’s stamp illustrates the path to autonomy, interpreted by artist Jonas Wilén’s eye and unique style.

16 • ÅLAND POST FRIMÄRKEN
The same year, the Åland question was put up for arbitration by the newly formed League of Nations. A Commission of Rap porteurs was appointed, and its recommen dation was largely adopted in the League’s resolution of June 1921. Finland retained sovereignty of Åland, that was granted politi cal autonomy and a guarantee to retain its Swedish language, local culture and tradi tions. Greatly disappointed, the Ålanders reluctantly accepted the situation. The first general election was held in May 1922, and the first Parliamentary Assembly convened on 9 June. Developing the self-government was now at the top of the agenda.
Sources: Det åländska samhället, Kurt Lindh 1998, www.julius.ax
The stamp shows the hero’s welcome with flowers and cheers they were given when returning to Åland in July 1920.
When the Tsardom of Russia fell apart, Åland representatives began working for reunion with the old mother country of Swe den. The first petition in 1917 confirmed that a majority of the population supported the idea. The Åland Movement was born. Supported by Sweden, the Åland demands were denied by Finland that, in 1920, put forward a suggestion of self-government. Still, the Ålanders wished to decide their nationality. Julius Sundblom and Carl Björkman, leading figures of the Åland Movement, were accused and convicted of treason but pardoned by the President.
“Thisreveals.honorary commission required a great deal of thought and research. It all came together when I decided to use the flag to illustrate the historic events. I painted the motif in watercolour and gouache.”

The official logo of the anniversary year adorns the FDC and sheet that also shows two mountain pines. The tree symbolizes Åland self-will and stubbornness, so typical to the islanders, Jonas Wilén explains. The first day cancel depicts a peace gull, a paraphrase of the proverbial peace dove. Holding an “olive branch” in the form of a cowslip, the provincial flower of Åland, it represents the Islands of Peace, another name for Åland because of the demilitarized status of the islands.

New design manager at Stamps
Stamps and collecting bring many people a great deal of joy and at a reasonable cost. The philatelic world is knowledge-intensive. Here, I see an opportunity to spread the joy
of stamps by clearly communicating con tent, inspiration, creativity and storytelling.
In times when we prioritize other values and new ways of communicating, we must be allowed to enrich our lives and embrace the sensual and tactile. The desire to collect, write, post and create are all part of a mate rial culture where tangible objects are some thing significant and meaningful. My hope is that stamps to a higher extent be seen as artwork and receive greater exposure in the media.
What do you do at Stamps?
Why are stamps important?
