A white-tailed eagle in flight on its broad wings is a mighty sight that you can experience on this year’s Åland Europa stamp on the theme national birds. The date of issue is 9 May.
WITH A WINGSPAN OF up to 2.5 meters, the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is an impressively large bird of prey.
An adult white-tailed eagle has midbrown body plumage with the head a buffy hue and a white tail. The bird often builds its nest in tall old pines and, using the nest for many years, it can attain an enormous size, weighing up to almost a ton.
Both adults take part in incubation of the 2-3 eggs laid in early April. The pair also cares jointly for the nestlings that are fully-fledged after 70-77 days. Favoured food is fish, but also waterfowl and small mammals will be devoured.
BREEDING IN ALL PARTS of Åland, the densest population of whitetailed eagles is found in Föglö. As an endangered species in Åland, neither the eagles nor their habitats may be harmed or
infringed upon without special permission of the provincial government. The whitetailed eagle was close to extinction in the 1970s due to environmental toxins but, today, the population has recovered well in Åland, conservation officer Hanna Kondelin informs. The latest stocktake in 2018 found 123 eyries and 95 fledglings. The fact that 5 white-tailed eagles with avian flu were spotted in 2017 should not influence the general population in the province, Hanna expects. A few lead poisoned birds are found every year but, in general, the whitetailed eagle is a fine symbol of successful nature conservation.
ARTIST Lars Sjööblom has made the design. You may recognize his style from the 2018 Nordic stamp featuring Atlantic salmon. The design is based on a photo by Anders Blomdahl.

Old residential buildings are in focus on the 2019 Sepac stamp series issued by the small posts of Europe. Åland Post highlights a type of carpenter’s houses, common in Åland around the turn of the century 1900. Artist Kjell Ekström designed the issue appearing on 9 May.
IN ÅLAND, most houses are built from wood. The dominating technique was the X-joint log house. The development of the sawing and timber industry in the 1800s increased the availability of industrially produced planed timber. Houses with a loft with planed panelling, a material that was also used for the porch, became popular. The wooden panelling was painted in oil paint, while red ochre was used for the carpentered and unplaned house body. Believed to have been introduced in Åland by Ostrobothnian craftsmen, this style stayed in fashion until World War I. Only some ten houses of this type are preserved in the Åland countryside today.
ONE OF THEM is the manor house of the Jonesas farm in Önningeby, Jomala. The last resident of the house died in 1980 and,
today, the house is owned by Önningeby folklore society. A museum for the Önninge by artists’ colony lodges in the stone barn of the farm. One of its driving forces is stamp artist Kjell Ekström who informs us that the body of the manor house probably dates back to the mid-1800s. The loft was added during the first decade of the 1900s. The floor plan suggests a well-situated home; the reception room and an oblong hallway are flanked by two bed chambers on the left and the kitchen, on the right. The drawing-room and kitchen were most com monly placed on either side of the hallway. Kjell also reveals plans of the folklore society to open the farmhouse for guided tours in 2019. The drawing-room has recently been renovated, revealing the wooden ceiling and restoring the window frames.

This year, the Åland crayfish season starts early; 9 May sees four colourful postal stationery cards by visual artist Carolina Sundelin.
Celebrated since the 1800s, crayfish parties are arranged in the late summer, a tradition as well established as the Christmas and Midsummer celebrations. Paper lanterns light up the darkness as cooked crayfish are served, often with a buffet-style serving of pies, cheeses and bread. Acquavit and
drinking songs are other popular accesso ries. Probably implanted by Swedish kings in the 1500s, river crayfish can be caught in most Åland lakes, swamps and ponds.

Åland Post is proud to present a new issue in the celebrity series My Åland on 7 June. Swedish music and Eurovision song veteran Lasse Holm has had close ties with Åland since childhood and now pictures part of his history with Åland.
LASSE HOLM has been in the music industry since the 1960s and his many popular hit songs are well known to most people. He has won the Swedish Eurovision song contest 5 times. Participating in the My Åland stamp series, Lasse comments:
“It’s a great honour to be documented on a stamp, not the least since I keep Åland in my heart, having spent long periods of my life on this beautiful island, privately as well as professionally.”
LASSE FIRST VISITED Åland in the 1950s, when he and his parents spent their holidays in guest house Gripen just outside Mariehamn. Since then, Lasse has stayed in close contact with Åland, largely because his sister married an Ålander. Consequently, he has been able to follow the development of the province up close.
ÅLAND IS LARGELY linked with re laxation, and Lasse’s stamp focuses on the sails to Åland and the family get-togethers during his children’s summer holidays. The tiny island of Gripen, the location of the for mer guest house on the stamp, is still today summer residence of Lasse’s sister Gunvor Wiljanen’s family. Built in the late 1930s, the grand red house has 22 rooms and a dining room for 70 guests. Bengt Wiljanen and two of his siblings purchased the guest house in 1959 and ran it until 1972.
Soon to be 75, Lasse is currently involved in the planning of the 17th season of the Diggiloo show, the largest Swedish summer tour that has visited Åland on a number of occasions. Lasse reveals that he is currently also working on a musical project expected to premiere in 2020, an event worth looking out for!

Also appearing on 7 June is a much longed-for stamp from Åland Post focusing on Postcrossing, the international postcard movement that has adopted Åland.
A CHEERFUL postcard in the letter box from somewhere in the world can brighten an otherwise grey day for anyone. The post crossing movement has undeniably boosted the writing of postcards since the start in Portugal in 2005. With some 21 000 postcrossers, Finland is one of the countries with the most active postcrossers, albeit the number of postcrossers in Åland remains modest. The world’s first association for the hobby was established in Tampere in 2015. Since then, the Finnish Postcrossing Friends Association has arranged a number of popu lar postcrossing meet-ups in Åland, and the next meet-up on 7 June will be the largest event so far. Stamp artist Cecilia Mattsson will also be present to sign the issue.
CECILIA MATTSSON, Brand manager of Åland Post, is an experienced stamp designer, who designed the award-winning 2015 joint issue with Switzerland featuring
folk dress brooches. Cecilia enjoyed creating a design for such a positive theme: “Sketching for the stamp, I assumed that what people love about postcrossing is the exchange between people in the entire world and the joy of finding new friends. The heart-shaped perforation, the colour scale and the world map are meant to con vey these sensations. I also looked at other postcrossing stamps to ensure that this stamp would be unique and not resemble any of the previously issued stamps.”
A NEW TYPE OF stamp sheet now makes its debut. The gutter pairs have only one decorated space instead of two as in other Åland full sheets. For more information about postcrossing, please visit www.postcrossing.com.
