BACK TO THE WORLD OF STAMPS
I’m Eivor Granberg, born and raised in Ostrobothnia. Settling in Åland 30 years ago, my first job was a two-year employment at the Post in connection with the launch of the Åland stamps. Returning to the Post in 1995, I work as Director of Postal Services since 2009. Stamps and Postal Services have always worked closely together, seeing that postal requirements guide our issuing policy. Representing Åland Post at international conferences, I’m pleased to learn that our stamps are known for beauty and character. I look forward to working with them, once again!

A Midsummer greeting
On 28 May, this year’s fun postal stationery cards appear, illustrating Åland Midsummer celebrations. Ammi Krogius is the artist.

The observant collector will recognize Am mi’s shrewd animals, previously appearing on the 2013 postal stationery and a 2014 stamp. They now have a go at the Midsum mer celebrations, one of Åland’s most popu lar festivals. Decorated with greens and col ourful Midsummer crowns, poles measuring 10 to 25 metres are raised all over Åland on

Midsummer Eve. Some villages organise a Midsummer dance. A typical meal includes pickled herring, new potatoes with dill and the first fresh strawberries of the season.

9 May sees a new issue in the Sepac stamp series, the joint theme being Spectacular views. With the sea as next-door neighbour, Åland Post decided to feature the breathtaking scenery of waves breaking against the cliffs.
NATURAL DRAMA CAPTURED ON STAMP
LOCATED some 9 kilometres west of Mariehamn, Hammarudda is a lovely spot in Åland to experience the transformation of the sea into foaming fountains as the waves beat against the cliffs. This is where, on a December afternoon, Niclas Nordlund shot the spectacular photo for the 2018 Sepac stamp. Niclas was also the photographer behind last year’s Europa stamp featuring the Kastelholm castle, a motif that won an honourable silver prize in the jury competition for the most beautiful 2017 Europa stamp.

NICLAS focuses on nature motifs with seabirds as his favourite choice of motif. He happily remains in the Mariehamn sur roundings. Hammarudda is a favourite spot, Geta in northern Åland another, a location where the unremitting forces of the sea may also be experienced. Nature photography
demands a great deal of patience and care ful planning of the area chosen, seeing that light and background play a major role for a top-notch photo.
THE ÅLAND LANDSCAPE diplays a great diversity ranging from barren skerries to forests and fertile cultivated land on the main island. With a patchwork archipelago of more than 6500 islands and skerries, water forms almost 90 % of the total area. Covering slightly more than 1500 km² today, the land area, however, increases by 4-5 mm every year due to the ongoing isostasy following the latest Ice Age some 10 000 years ago.
ALL THE 2018 Sepac stamps issued by the small European posts will be available in a practical and stylish pack this autumn.

The 2018 Europa theme is Bridges. 9 May sees Åland Post’s issue featuring the interesting 1950s arch bridge connecting the ruins of the Bomarsund fortress with the island of Prästö.
WELL-KEPT ARCH BRIDGE HONOURED

MEASURING 61 METRES, the Bomarsund Bridge is part of country road 2 passing through the ruins of Bomarsund fortress to Prästö and further on to the archipelago municipality of Vårdö. Commonly known as the Prästö Bridge, it is neither the longest nor the tallest of the 53 bridges in Åland, but it is one of only two arch bridges, the other being the Färjsund Bridge, featured on a stamp in 1987.
THE POSTAL ROUTE was the main route from Eckerö in the west to the landingstage at Bomarsund in Sund for a long time. But travelling was slow with many bent roads and crossings by boat. A major expansion of the road network came about in the 1950s. By then, passenger cars were commonly used and people wanted to travel with speed and in comfort. New roads,
bridges and embankments were built at a rapid pace. Completed in concrete in 1958, the lifespan of the narrow one-lane Bomarsund Bridge is, however, coming to an end. Due to a substantial increase of traffic and heavier vehicles, weight restric tions apply since many years. The Åland Provincial Government has it listed as one of a number of bridges that need to be reconstructed by 2023.
FROM THE START, Sandra Henriks son knew exactly how to create the stamp: “For a more dramatic and interesting image and not just a profile image of the bridge, I decided to create a rectangular stamp motif to capture the bridge in perspective.”
A web designer in everyday life, she otherwise enjoys creating Indian ink and watercolour drawings of animals and nature.

On 28 May, Åland Post focuses on beekeeping in Åland. Designed by Swedish artist Torbjörn Östman, we find this honey bee among the apple blossoms, seeing that bees are invaluable to fruit and berry growers in the islands.

ÅLAND BEES STAND OUT
BEEKEEPING was introduced in Åland in the late 1800s and, today, we find some 80 beekeepers on the islands, most of whom keep bees as a hobby. Relying on bees for pollination, the majority of approx. 950 bee colonies are located close to orchards.
UNUSUALLY HEALTHY, Åland bees are much sought-after. Åland beekeepers have succeeded in keeping their bees free of varroa, a dreaded type of mites that destroy entire bee colonies and has become a plague to beekeepers worldwide. In the autumn of 2013, following assiduous efforts by the Åland Beekeepers Association, the EU commission granted Åland the status of a varroa-free region, entirely prohibiting importation of bees to Åland. Only Åland, Isle of Man, Australia and Iceland are considered to be completely free of the pest.
But did you know that all bee colonies in Iceland come from Åland? Some 100 Åland bee colonies are exported every summer, mostly to Sweden and Finland.
THE NORDIC SUB-SPECIES of the honey bee (Apis mellifera) with elements of the yellowish brown Italian bee forms the base of Åland beekeeping. A cross of many strains of bees, the manmade bee race Buckfast illustrated on the stamp is very popular today. Weather and wind conditions influence the quantity of honey produced per hive. Bees reluctantly fly in the rain and preferably not further than 6 kilometres. Consequently, the demand for Åland honey is often greater than the supply. Local brewery Stallhagen buys 3-4 tons of honey every year.

Hold onto your hat!
On 28 May, this year’s stamp booklet takes you for a ride through the history of motor cycles, documented by Åland photographer Daniel Eriksson.
BIKES FROM PAST AND PRESENT
AN ULTIMATE sense of freedom, that’s the magic of bikes, says Martin CromwellMorgan, owner of the Indian Chief adorning a stamp. He confirms that the interest in motor cycles among Ålanders has increased greatly:
“In the mid-1980s, we were only a few but, now, we can be any number of bikers.”
MARTIN CAME ACROSS his Indian Chief in Galong, Australia, when he was travelling around the world in 1991-92. First sold to the Australian Army in 1944, it was utilized as a police motorcycle after the war. Martin goes on motorcycle tours in Europe every year.
THE OLDEST motorcycle portrayed is a 1919 Harley-Davidson 1000cc. Knut Kronström purchased it in Sweden in 2008. Stored in a basement in dismantled condi tion since the early 1970s, Knut has now restored the mechanical parts, aiming at

preserving its original overall appearance. He won second prize in the Classics class at the Norrtälje 2016 Custom Bike Show.
THE THIRD stamp features a HD Chopper bought in Sweden by Micko Koski nen from Mariehamn in 1989. This classic chopper is a hotchpotch of parts from vari ous vintages. A modern 2011 Victory Cross Country finishes our time travel. Krister Ljungdahl, who runs a motor repair shop in Mariehamn, covers hundreds of kilometres with his bike across Europe every year.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, we have featured the Swedish Svalan MC 75 on the booklet cover. Purchased by postman Algot Mattsson in 1957, he used it in the winter for carrying the mail across the ice to the islands of northern Vårdö.

In the original set, the uncirculated coins are accompanied by an Åland stamp that also serves as inspiration for the design of the cover. This year’s stamp features Beekeeping in Åland.
The limited edition of the euro coin set is only 1300. Ensure your own set by placing an order on page 13.

Follow Åland Post’s fine series of five groovy nostalgia model cars. As model for the coming car in the strictly limited series of nostalgia cars we chose a classic light beige luxury 1968 Mercedes-Benz. The number of classic cars in Åland is steadily increasing and importing cars from the 1960s has been particularly popular. Among the most popular car brands Mercedes places fifth. This nostalgia car is inspired by a similar Mercedes that was imported to Åland in the 1960s and is still rolling on the Åland roads today.

the turn of the year. Nostalgia car no. 2 is scheduled to be issued this summer. The scale of the entire model car series is 1:43 and the limited edition is only 2500/model. The metal cast car is deliv ered mounted on a plinth in a specially designed box together with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Please note that Premium & Collectibles Trading Co. Ltd is the manufacturer of both nostalgia cars, not Corgi as previously informed.
Ensure your collector’s car today by starting a subscription on page 15.
