IN LAST YEAR’S Annual Construction Review, we reported that despite uncertainties arising out of the regional political malaise, the outlook for the Gulf’s construction sector was much improved since the 2008 credit crunch days took their toll on builders and suppliers. This year, despite an uncertain global economy, we can safely say that the regional building sector is continuing to prosper. It’s true that these may not be the boom years of the last decade, and that quite a few investors may have had their fingers burnt in the recent past - the ripples of debt are still making their way through some of the large corporates in the region. But there’s no denying that numerous opportunities remain in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) states, from major oil, gas and power projects, to transport, infrastructure and especially social spending, a central theme following the tumult of the Arab Spring. According to some estimates, longer term infrastructure investment plans for the entire Middle East region may be worth in excess of US$1 trillion.

We report from the Intermat event in Paris which attracted more than 200,000 visitors. A Middle East version will be held in October.

BRIEFLY ■ INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES WORTH more than US$500 billion in energy, transportation, education, health care and other critical sectors of economic development continue to beckon for contractors in the Gulf, industry experts said. "GCC countries have significant trade surpluses which they are planning to invest in order to diversify their economies' dependence on oil revenues and also to develop their countries and satisfy the demands of their people following the Arab Spring. The region certainly is expected to continue to offer a lot of opportunity for contractors," said Rizwan Shah, managing director, Corporate Finance, and leader of Deloitte's Capital Projects Advisory services practice for the Middle East. Despite grappling with challenges and delivery issues related to current projects, major opportunities remain prevalent in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Iraq this year.

Success cemented

Jotun seeks a stronger presence

CEMENT COMPANIES IN the Gulf witnessed a 24.3 per cent increase in revenues in the first quarter, touching US$1.26 billion as construction picked up in certain parts of the region. The industry's profits rose to US$435.6mn, compared to US$359.54mn in the first quarter of last year, a growth of 21.2 per cent. However, according to Global Investment House's report, net margins suffered a fall of 90.4 basis points during the period. Gross margins witnessed a 233.6 basis point increase in Q1 to 43.7 per cent compared to 41.4 per cent, which was due to an increase in selling prices accompanied by a drop in prices of fuel.

THE UAE IS seeing more growth in the country’s decorative paint segment with the introduction of key initiatives and programs. In line with this growth, Jotun Paints has revealed a new strategic initiative, ‘Closer to the Consumer,’ which is focused on consolidating the company’s market presence in the Emirates. The announcement was accompanied with the launch of ‘Fenomastic Stain Erik Aaberg, Group Executive Vice Resistant’ and ‘Fenomastic President, Jotun Hygiene.’ In addition, the company also revealed a new design packaging for the ‘Jotashield’ line of paints. The launch of the new products and the newly packaged ‘Jotashield’ complements the company’s move towards consolidating its UAE market leadership while at the same time reinforcing customer ties. Industry reports have revealed that the increasing number of construction projects across the UAE have become one of the key factors attributed to the continuous growth of the country’s paint market. “Our aim is to be able to come up with an innovative line of products that our customers can widely depend on,” said Erik Aaberg, Group Executive Vice President, Jotun.

Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure plans boost demand for cement CEMENT DEMAND IN Saudi Arabia is to continue strongly, led by government expenditure. Recent government intervention in reducing the price cap and fuelling new expansion has aided supply and reduced prices. However, over the long run, it is believed that supply constraints remain the key concern. These assessments are recorded in a new report issued by Riyadh-based NCB Capital. The report indicates that the government plans to spend more than US$216 billion on infrastructure and transportation projects during the next year. Railways, airports and major infrastructure projects are being constructed throughout the Kingdom with demand for cement boosted by these projects. Government spending will continue to be the main driver for the sector in the medium term, the report says. The report refers to strong demand in the Western Region which has increased significantly this year, due to the size and urgency of the projects in this region. The new Jeddah airport, Haramain Railway and other major infrastructure projects such as Rabigh Port are examples of the mega projects taking place in the region. As a result, cement companies throughout the Kingdom have increased their sales in the Western Region, either directly or indirectly, by selling cement or clinker. This also means that cement companies with a focus on the Western Region are best exposed to the demand momentum of the sector.

Iraq needs to build infrastructure IRAQ IS LOOKING for investors in housing and infrastructure projects, Mohammad Al Daraji, its Minister of Construction and Housing, told a conference in Abu Dhabi recently. Al Daraji extended an invitation to delegates at the Arabian World Construction Summit 2012 in Abu Dhabi to look at potential opportunities for projects and investments in Iraq. "Now is the time for the big names to come either in private public partnerships or to invest in Iraq," Al Daraji said. He added that investment is needed in housing, roads and infrastructure. Iraq needs to build 2.5mn housing units and 7,000-km of new roads by 2016, he said. "We're going to spend US$2 billion over the next two years on social housing projects and another US$2 billion on low-cost housing, he said. That's in addition to US$5.8 billion for roads."

Bahrain sees signs of recovery THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY in Bahrain is improving after a period of unrest that also affected the real estate sector, said top officials from a major construction company in the kingdom. Concrete efforts from the government addressing affordable housing and the push towards building social infrastructure amenities such as healthcare and educational facilities sees the construction sector pull back onto the recovery track, www.nassgroup.com according to officials from the Nass Group. Nass International Trading (NIT), a division of Nass Group and the authorised dealer for Hyundai elevators, has announced plans to capitalise on the improving construction sector through a range of products and services that will assist in the enhancement of several projects. 'In the first quarter of 2012 alone, we have been successful in acquiring a considerable number of contracts for 37 elevators that have been customised to suit specialised needs,' said NIT executive manager Mohamed Hasona.

BRIEFLY ■A NUMBER OF Chinese contracting companies have pulled out of the Saudi construction market and quit government and private construction projects they had taken up due to high local specifications and standards, a local daily reported. The Dammam-based Al-Yaum paper said a number of Chinese contractors faced difficulties executing construction projects in accordance with the Kingdom’s rules and regulations. “These (Chinese) companies were not used to implementing projects with high specifications and standards,” an industry source said. ■ WORK ON THE US$100mn East-West Highway Algeria project is progressing well and is due to be completed by 2014, according to senior government officials. The project, which involves 1,300-km cross-desert road; and a 700-km side highway in the upper hills, is being developed under Algeria's nationwide development scheme.

Lebanon’s private sector seeks a greater role in infrastructure development THE LEBANESE ECONOMIC Organizations (LEO) grouping has urged the government in a proposal to allow the private sector to be more involved in infrastructure projects in order to ease the financial pressure on the Treasury. The LEO, which groups all the leading banks and companies in Lebanon, said the plan was an attempt to find a solution to the country’s various political, social and economic problems. The LEO added that the proposal had been put together by a group of think

tanks at the request of the organization. It touched on political reforms, administrative modernization, economic development, private sector enhancement, social advancement, civic awareness and strategic positioning. The government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, a prominent businessman himself, also highlighted the importance of the private sector’s role in stimulating the economy as well as allowing the sector to take part in all major projects, such as those to do with electricity and water.

The private sector and Lebanese commercial banks have expressed an interest in funding major government projects but have fallen short of calling for the privatization of state-owned assets. The Private-Public-Partnership slogan has become a common topic in the government’s speeches and statements. However, neither the government nor the Finance Ministry have made significant steps to translate these promises to action.

Building sector continues to prosper An uncertain global economy, including a eurozone in crisis, and now even mixed growth signals from China, have failed to put the dampeners on the Gulf ’s construction market.

T’S TRUE THAT these may not be the boom years of the last decade, and that quite a few investors may have had their fingers burnt in the recent past - the ripples of debt are still making their way through some of the large corporates in the region. But there’s no denying that opportunities still abound in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, from major oil, gas and power projects, to transport, infrastructure and especially social spending, a central theme following the tumult of the Arab Spring. According to some estimates, longer term infrastructure investment plans for the entire Middle East region may be worth in excess of US$1 trillion. And it’s a figure that could rise yet more as governments assess the impact of the Arab Spring on their priority investments. With social unrest still evident in places such as Bahrain, and Syria at crisis point, the full effects of this messy upheaval remain hard to predict. Yet the uprisings have been credited with positively influencing infrastructure investment, forcing governments to accelerate spending plans in order to meet higher public expectations, and to keep track with rising populations. This is reflected in the make-up of planned state spending and those projects in the pipeline with social investment expected to gulp around a third of all spending. Social outlay is closely followed by massive sustained investment in the power sector, then transport and, of

There are still plenty of opportunities in the regional construction sector

course, the oil and gas sector, which underpins the regional economy. High oil prices in the past year or so have topped up state coffers to bankroll the next wave of this investment, both in the social sector and beyond, at the same time, softening the impact of the global financial crisis on the GCC construction market. In fact, it is the oil-rich economies of the Gulf that will account for the bulk of the spending in the years ahead. This means opportunities in the construction sector remain prevalent in the likes of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, as well as a fast-emerging Iraq.

One of the most attractive features of Saudi Arabia’s construction boom is its broad scope According to Deloitte Middle East’s annual report on the sector, ‘GCC Power of Construction: Five Lessons to Learn From’, large infrastructure projects, particularly around social and transport infrastructure, will offer tremendous potential for contractors, as will continuing upstream and downstream oil and gas developments. Construction contracts alone, worth US$40 billion were awarded to contractors in the first quarter of 2011, the report says, 47 per cent of which were in the energy sector.

Of the biggest investments currently underway is Qatar’s plan to spend US$100 billion in preparation for hosting the 2022 World Cup and in achieving its 2030 vision. Qatar has for some years been one of the world’s fastest growing economies, underpinned by the phenomenal growth of its gas sector. Meanwhile, in the region’s biggest economy, Saudi Arabia, the state’s capital spend programme is expected to be worth around US$400 billion over the next 10 years. On the social side, the government’s 2012 budget includes plans to construct 742 new schools and the renovation of 2,000 schools along with the construction of numerous new hospitals, social and welfare centres. Not all budgeted projects will go ahead: a Royal Court report presented to the Council of Ministers in June found that roughly 20 per cent of government projects in Saudi have not been implemented during the past six years. Without doubt, though, the conditions for construction sector growth remain bullish. Backed by vast oil-based reserves and government stimulus packages, the economic prospects of the GCC region have remained positive despite ongoing political unrest in the wider Middle East region. As such, efforts to maintain a balanced and diversified economic base have remained the primary focus of most regional governments as evidenced by a

steady stream of investments into construction and infrastructure projects. But it is not all plain sailing. The Deloitte report indicates that although there are massive opportunities associated with this huge construction spend, many project sponsors still have to deal with illiquid projects and debt.

Most buoyant Despite such grand investments, governments are still trying to recuperate from the impact of the global financial crisis. “What primarily differentiates participants in the GCC’s construction industry from their western counterparts is that grand opportunities continue to be capitalised upon across the region, despite being forced to deal with continuing negative financial circumstances,” says Rizwan Shah, managing director, corporate finance, and leader of Deloitte’s capital projects advisory services practice in the Middle East. Given it’s size, Saudi Arabia is expected to be the most buoyant construction market in the region and, quite possibly, globally, according to the Deloitte report, which shows that local construction activity is poised for imminent growth. The budgeted value of contacts to be awarded in Saudi Arabia in 2011 onwards is set to increase to US$35 billion, as compared to US$25 billion in 2006. And Riyadh officials are scheduling further grand investments, with plans nearing US$400 billion in five years, demonstrating an increasing trend of projects that will need to be awarded in the coming years. The make-up of projects will include

Planned projects in Saudi Arabia include the Kingdom Tower which, when built, will be the tallest building in the world

building schools, hospitals, universities, houses, airport expansions, and new railway infrastructure and road improvements. Business intelligence provider BMI estimates the Saudi construction sector will grow 5.4 per cent this year, led by the ongoing development of the power sector. It is little wonder given that projects reached an all time high in 2011, according to the Gulf kingdom’s largest bank, National Commercial Bank (NCB). It reported earlier this year that the surge in public spending boosted the total value of awarded contracts by 155 per cent to US$72 billion during 2011, surpassing the previous record value of US$207 billion in 2009.

Despite the regional unrest and the public slowdown of projects in Abu Dhabi last year, the UAE has overall demonstrated some key elements of stability Significant One of the most attractive features of Saudi Arabia’s construction boom is its broad scope, reckons Saleh Muradweij, executive director of Drake and Scull Construction, a leading regional player. “Projects are emerging for all sectors, from government and healthcare to education and hospitality,” he told the Saudi Gazette recently. “Given the market dynamics we expect sustained demand for our mechanical, electrical and plumbing, civil contracting and water and power expertise.” The company currently has an order backlog in the kingdom worth over US$853mn. High-growth Qatar is another market where there is likely to be plenty going on, both now and in the future. The tiny Gulf state has spent US$8 billion on construction projects in the 2011 financial year, rising significantly in the years ahead. Projects planned in the future are valued at approximately US$230 billion; with the hosting of the 2022 World Cup set to be a truly major enabling event for the future development of the country in achieving its 2030 vision.

Sport will therefore be a key element of the local construction boom, with plenty of investment allocated to hotel, leisure, tourism, recreational and infrastructure projects. And that is just in the non-oil and gas sector. As the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a pioneer in other gas technologies, Qatar is also expected to continue sinking money into new energy developments, that will filter through to the construction sector. The launch of the US$18 billion Pearl gas-to-liquids (GTL) project this year - the country’s single largest foreign investment project led by Shell and Qatar Petroleum highlights the scale of ambition. In the UAE, it is Abu Dhabi that is likely to have the edge on rival emirate Dubai, once renowned for its frenetic pace of development Overall, the UAE is the Gulf’s second largest market with investments worth US$9 billion allocated to buildings, infrastructure and energy sectors in the first quarter of 2011, according to Deloitte’s figures. Despite the regional unrest and the public slowdown of projects in Abu Dhabi last year, the UAE has overall demonstrated some key elements of stability. Abu Dhabi, in particular, accounted for 70 per cent of the total US$20 billion of contracts awarded between the first and third quarters during 2011. Again, driving this growth, with over USD$12 billion in awarded contracts, the emirate is placing particular attention on transport, utilities and social infrastructure commitments. Approximately US$2 billion has also been allocated towards an integrated housing project on the outskirts of the capital to boost the residential market. In addition, according to the Deloitte report, the Abu Dhabi government has a long term investment programme to upgrade its airports, sea ports and public transport system to cater for a growing population. Among the more recent notable projects to be awarded, Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) awarded a US$2.9 billion contract to a joint venture between TAV, CCC, and Arabtec for the construction of the Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) at Abu Dhabi International Airport. General infrastructure spending remains high priority across the region, of course. As well as transportation, this includes a major focus on the power sector, from building new generation plants, through to the strengthening of the transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Saudi Electricity Company is already one of the largest utility companies in the world in terms of its installed power generation capacity, but it will grow significantly in the coming decades. As well as tapping into the region’s hydrocarbon resources, it also means rolling out new technologies, including renewables and nuclear power.

Diversify The kingdom plans to invest some US$112 billion during the next 20 years to build 16 nuclear power units to offset rising domestic energy demand and retain its position as a leading hydrocarbons exporter. Riyadh has been criticised in the past for consuming too much of its own oil to run its power stations. Reducing this consumption would free up more oil for export.

Despite such grand investments, governments are still trying to recuperate from the impact of the global financial crisis There is also a plan to spend a similar amount in developing the nation’s enormous solar energy potential too. Saudi Arabia, like the Gulf’s other main oil and gas exporting countries, has an

Dubai bouncing back DUBAI’S RESIDENTIAL REAL-ESTATE developers are a more pragmatic bunch these days. Although the debt clouds are starting to disperse, paving the way for this former go getting construction power house to get building again, it is not out of the woods yet. While immediate concerns about Dubai's debt burden have lessened after the recent settlement of two of the most challenging bond maturities at government-related entities, the emirate remains a highly-leveraged state. The emirate’s real estate sector is seeing a sustained recovery, with a new focus on tourism, trade and transportation, although 2014 will bring a new raft of government-related maturities. It means this time there is a greater degree of caution on display among those that survived the bust. One of the most prolific real estate developers, Nakheel - which wrote off US$21 billion after property values in the emirate fell by more than half - is now tentatively starting work on its first new projects since the crash. It is still completing restructuring in the run-up to a decisive next year, with most of its properties currently under construction expected to be handed over to customers between now and the first few months of 2013.

additional objective in the need to diversify away from the traditional petrochemical and hydrocarbon industries. This is driving infrastructure and other spending in these countries, in areas such as downstream activity. Saudi’s Eastern Province gulped nearly 20 per cent of the total awarded contracts last year following the award of numerous large projects in the petrochemical and industrial sectors. The country’s NCB reckons the heavy capital spending in sectors such as power, petrochemicals and oil and gas will continue to anchor the construction sector throughout 2012. But the shift away from hydrocarbons remains a priority, as evidenced by the trend towards nuclear power both in Saudi Arabia and in some other Gulf states. ■

Kingdom Tower A MEASURE OF the new confidence sweeping the region is Saudi’s decision to go ahead with what will become the world’s tallest tower. The US$1.2 billion Kingdom Tower, on the outskirts of Jeddah, will stand 1,000 meters tall, or two-thirds of a mile, when it is finished, not just breaking the current record, but shattering it. When the Kingdom Tower is built on the outskirts of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia it will not only become the tallest building in the world, it will shatter the old record. The current record-holder, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa stands at 828 metres, while the tallest building in the US, Chicago’s Willis Tower, is a mere 442 metres, or 527 metres if you count the antenna. The One World Trade Center tower currently being built in New York will climb, including antenna, to 541 metres. The Kingdom Tower is being designed by Chicago firm Adrian Smith and constructed by the local Bin Ladin Group. Inside the tower, there will be a hotel, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums, top class office space and the world’s highest observatory.

HALID AL KHATIB believes that fire safety has a vital role to play in the construction industry as it helps prevents fire accidents and in turn protects lives and properties. The UAE-based manufacturer of fire fighting equipment, fire protection systems and safety engineering has a wide range of products that cover and caters for all types of industries, including the construction. Al Khatib added that there is a “need for total fire-protection solutions under a single roof.” Naffco has faced a number of challenges trying to bring its fire safety solutions to the construction industry. “During the early years, the challenge we faced was in making the industry accept the design and then implement fire safety solutions based on NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) codes and buy products which passed international quality standards,” noted Al Khatib. The situation has improved with the support of the local authorities who have started implementing proper fire safety codes, but Al Khatib argued that it is “a reality that there are some countries in the region which still need to double their efforts in developing and implementing more stringent Fire Safety Regulations.”

Fire safety critical to construction industry The critical role that fire safety plays in the construction industry was highlighted by Naffco’s chief executive officer when he spoke to Technical Review about the challenges and opportunities for fire safety products in the industry One factor in helping fire solutions in the construction industry become more prominent in the region has been the lessons learnt from the several fire incidents in the past which were caused or exacerbated by poorly designed systems and low quality products. According to Al Khatib: “Consumers started to become aware that they needed to go for the right design and implementation programme and choose the highest product quality.” The need for a proper regulated fire system was tragically highlighted when a fire broke out recently at the Villaggio Mall in Doha and ended up killing a few people. Al Khatib said it was hard to give a proper comment on the incident since the investigation was still on-going, but he did provide a general observation. “As long as the building is designed and built with the proper system in accordance to internationally accepted Fire Safety Codes and the products installed passed international quality standard, there is a very low risk of fire incidents. Above all, it is very important to have an AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) from internationally certified Fire Experts like our own company,” he stated.

A rigorous training programme is an important element in helping to educate the wider public on the importance of proper fire safety solutions in the construction industry. Al Khatib explained that Naffco has always had regular technical training sessions for both its own staff and the wider public. “Just this year alone, we have had monthly technical training sessions. We have also collaborated with NFPA to conduct several training exercises in the local market,” he noted. Al Khatib provided an insight in the outlook for the UAE construction market and how the downturn in the market over the last few affected Naffco. He believes that the construction market is picking up again, and notes that because the firm never relied solely the UAE construction market, it was never adversely affected by the downturn. Al Khatib said that Naffco, which is present in over 100 countries, was growing internationally and its export team was tapping more international markets each year. The UAE-based firm has tripled its investments in international operations. Al Khatib added: “We have a good market share within the region.” Ongoing research and development (R&D) is a prominent feature of the company and Naffco invests heavily in R&D. According to Al Khatib, “this is to be sure that our products and services are of the highest quality. We have a yearly quality audit from different International Certifying bodies “UL, FM, LPCB, BSI (Kite Mark & CE).and SABS” Al Khatib is sure that the present Fire Safety Industry boom will continue, mainly because of his belief that there will be more stringent fire preventive programmes initiated by local authorities in cooperation with international fire experts within the region. ■

Annual Construction Review 2012

Machinery sector springs into life in Paris The global construction machinery industry descended on Paris for six days of trade talks, new launches and networking at Intermat 2012.

The show attracted more than 200,000 visitors

NTERMAT RETURNED IN April following a three-year break and proved that it was not all economic doom and gloom in the international market for construction machinery. The show dominated the Paris-Nord Villepinte exhibition centre and attracted more than 200,000 visitors during its sixday run in the French capital. Mario Gasparri, chairman of CNH Construction, described Intermat as an “excellent opportunity to take the pulse of our sector”. “It was a chance for us to demonstrate to our customers how pioneering we are in terms of low-emission engines, in both road and construction applications,” he remarked. CNH was among a host of big names that took full advantage of the opportunity to demonstrate their engineering prowess. Doosan was among those names, filling its exhibition stand with a host of brand new models that it hoped would take the market by storm. Doosan used the show to launch a new range of crawler excavators intended for the Middle East and African markets, including the DX225LCA model, and the larger DX300LCA and DX340LCA models.

The new excavators offer new design features suited to the needs of the African market, including a powerful Doosan Tier 2 compliant engine, fewer electronics on board and a new ergonomically-designed cab. The company has also recently launched new wheel loaders for markets in Africa and the Middle East, and exhibited the Doosan Tier 1 diesel engine-powered DL250A wheel loader at the event. Scott Nelson, president of Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment in Europe, Middle East and Africa, remarked, "We showed our new Doosan Stage IIIB compliant excavators and wheel loaders for the first time as well as our new excavator and wheel loader ranges specifically designed for the Middle East and African markets. “These new products were complemented by a strong display of Bobcat compact equipment and telescopic handlers including the unveiling of the new Limited Edition E16 model to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Bobcat compact excavator range. “Also on display were examples of products that have migrated to the

Doosan brand, such as the new DA40 articulated dump truck and the Portable Power range of air compressors and generators,” he added. Atlas Copco, which recently received a US$35.3mn order in South Africa to deliver Pit Viper 351 blasthole drilling rigs to Anglo American subsidiary Kumba Iron Ore, used Intermat to launch the Edge Drill Monitor, which measures shock waves from down-the-hole drilling. Edge, which has been developed jointly by Atlas Copco and SPC Technology, is a continuous monitoring system that can be fitted to all types of deep-hole drill rigs that use Secoroc DTH hammers. SPC Technology chief technology officer Ivo Henriksson said, “By isolating the hammer vibrations from all the other noise and analysing the frequency and amplitude of the drillbit hitting the rock thousands of feet below ground, we are able to provide the drillers with userfriendly real time information to optimise their drilling parameters. “In a recent customer evaluation programme, we reduced fuel cost per drilled footage by 10 per cent and increased rate of penetration (ROP) by 11 per cent using the Edge,” he added.

JCB, whose famous dancing diggers were joined by a group of Parisian street dancers at Intermat, highlighted many of its 2012 launches at the show including the restyled JCB 457 wheeled loader, which features the biggest engine currently used within the company's construction equipment range. “This restyling certainly differentiates the 457 from the previous generation of JCB wheeled loaders and sets a new design direction,” said JCB chief innovation and growth officer Tim Burnhope. “The JCB 457 is a bigger, better and frankly, unbeatable new wheeled loader from JCB,” he remarked. JCB also announced record financial results for 2011 during the show, boasting turnover of US$4.4 billion for the year – 37 per cent higher than the US$3.2 billion posted in 2010. John Deere Power Systems unveiled its solution for the EU Stage IV emissions regulations at Intermat and introduced an SCR catalyst and diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit to its Stage IIIb engine platforms from 56-560kW. “SCR was not our preferred technology path, but it has proved to be the best way for us to maintain particulate levels, while reducing NOx to meet EU Stage IV emissions regulations,” explained Xavier Adam, market planning manager for John Deere Power Systems. Caterpillar brought a whole host of machines to the exhibition, proving as popular with industry visitors as with construction machinery enthusiasts. More than 60 products were exhibited across its three booths at the show, which included a host of new rolling equipment such as the multiple application Cat BSeries Tandem Vibratory Roller series and the Cat CW34 Pneumatic Roller, while the new Cat 307.D and 302.D mini-excavators were also unveiled.

The Chinese are coming - LiuGong exhibited a range of excavators

Intermat 2012 exhibition manager Maryvonne Lanoë surmised, “The ninth Intermat confirmed the recovery of the construction equipment sector, with a clear upturn in business worldwide and turnover of more than US$100 billion in 2011. So Intermat in fact heralded the 2012 recovery.” Intermat 2012 also provided plenty of opportunities for companies, investors and professionals from the Middle East to mingle, meet and talk shop with a host of leading industry names from across the global construction machinery equipment sector. “The level of opportunity in the Middle East with regards to construction, infrastructure and manufacturing are greatly acknowledged and appreciated by French and European investors,” remarked Lanoë. Among the highlights at the exhibition was Middle East Day, which brought a host of big names to Europe to promote upcoming projects and developments taking place across the GCC. Yousuf Barzak, contractors classification specialist at Abu Dhabi’s Department of Economic Development (DED), noted, “The Middle East Day at Intermat Paris provided the DED with a great opportunity to attract business into Abu Dhabi. “We see abundant potential, as there are various largescale construction projects yet to be developed across Abu Dhabi, which makes up 87 per cent of the UAE. “Furthermore many investors have expressed significant interest in bidding for

major projects in Abu Dhabi and the Middle East region,” he added. The region-specific day was also used to promote Intermat Middle East, which will be held for the second time in Abu Dhabi this October.

John Deere - meeting emission regulations

The Middle East version of Intermat will look to make the most of European curiosity in the Gulf region, as well as build on the strength of the Paris trade show, with interest from France particularly strong in a region where more than 200 French firms currently operate. Lanoë added, “Middle East Day at Intermat Paris attracted purchasing advisors, decision makers, dealers, manufacturers and opinion leaders from both the Middle East and Europe.” With another three years to go before the show returns to its traditional Paris home, those that need their next fix of the Intermat brand sooner rather than later will be able to rest assured that the show’s next stop will be the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre this October. ■

Volvo CE feels this should be no different in the construction industry – evidenced by the Volvo Reman program, arguably one of the company’s most resource friendly initiatives. The Reman program takes machine components that have reached the end of their ‘first’ useful lives and remanufactures them using high quality genuine Volvo parts, resulting in a good-as-new component that gives the customer all the reassurance of knowing it is guaranteed by Volvo – and all the machine up time, long service life and lower owning and operating costs that go with it. The potential savings are incredible. IT for construction: maximise the return on your investment CONSTRUCTION COMPUTER SOFTWARE (CCS), developers of the construction software applications Candy - for estimating and project control and BuildSmart - the web based, construction accounting and costing ERP solution – held complimentary seminars for their current and prospective users, with the aim of encouraging them to use these powerful software solutions to their full potential. “So many of our users fail to realise the full potential of our products, which if used correctly and to full capacity, could bring massive improvements in productivity, automation and efficiency, directly contributing to better control and inevitably better returns on a project” commented CCS Gulf general manager Ian Hauptfleisch. “In the challenging industry of construction, cost control is essential and if the pertinent variables of time, cost and budget are managed properly, revenue and profit targets simply become bi-products,” added Hauptfleisch. However this is easier said than done

as most professionals in the construction sector will attest to but this is exactly where software can play a huge part in minimising the most common obstacles of control such as multiple-entry of data, inconsistency of presentation and calculation, un-auditable figures and values, to name a few. Candy and BuildSmart, together include modules for project estimating, planning, valuations, forecasting, cash flow, procurement, accounting, wages, plant, yard and stock management and document control. When utilised properly and to their fullest intended extent, they can help attain complete control by eradicating the aforementioned obstacles of control and putting the users in a better position to proactively manage and control the numerous variables associated with a construction project. This was the underlying theme of the seminars held in the UAE, Oman and Qatar where the audience was led through a detailed presentation of how the entire life cycle of a construction project, from estimation through to

final account, can be effortlessly and comprehensively monitored and managed by utilising the various interconnected software modules of Candy and BuildSmart, saving time, resource and ultimately money. Ben Swart, Commercial Manager of ALEMCO, the MEP business unit within Al Jaber L.E.G.T. Engineering & Contracting (ALEC), explained the benefits to a contractor of using the CCS Candy and BuildSmart solutions to the maximum effect: “We found it difficult to cost and deliver a project within the allowable issued at tender stage due to external influences and the mismanagement of the procurement process. What we do control, we can change, and by implementing a system that can communicate on a live real time basis with our current estimation, engineering, commercial, procurement, logistics and accounts systems has an immediate effect on our project deliverables. We have found that by implementing and utilising both Buildsmart & Candy we now have a system that can control all of the above processes from the estimation sheet to the final deliverable.”

Tough assignment on CMA Tower The 76-storey CMA Tower in Saudi Arabia will be the tallest building in the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh when it tops out at 400 meters

T

HE CMA TOWER is being built by SBG, a firm with a huge amount of experience in highrise construction. The tower stands out for its large nine-sided CIP concrete core, whose 40 meters cross-section makes it big enough to be a skyscraper in its own right. A unique formwork solution from Doka is in use for the 100 casting sections At present, SBG has an uncommonly tough challenge to deal with: incorporating a three-storey-high steel construction into the CIP concrete core. Work on the up to 2.50 meters thick reinforced concrete wall of the structure core has reached the 29th floor, in some cases progressing in a four-day-cycle. The colossal structure core serves as the bearing element for a gigantic steel construction to which the exterior facade and floor-slabs are to be attached. This steel construction will take several weeks to install, a procedure which will have to be repeated at the 51st floor. The complex fitting operations had to be carried out from the 26th to the 29th floors. In these three storeys, the steel construction was embedded in the CIP concrete core as this was poured, to assure a tension-proof connection between the core and the exterior facade. For this, 10 cm thick steel plates

The shaft core of the CMA Tower is now at 29th floor-level and has already climbed above the 150 m mark

of up to 14 meters in height were erected ahead of the casting operations, ready to be diagonally embedded. In addition, 12 meters high reinforcement rods were also emplaced. Placement of the horizontal rebar proved particularly laborious, as every single rebar item had to be bolted onto the steel construction by way of welded couplers. The result, in the so-called ‘outrigger levels’, is a reinforcement ratio averaging 1500 kg per m³ of concrete. With so much steel in the concrete, tying the two formwork-halves and preparing the suspension points for the self-climbing system was quite a challenge.

Doka will use a unique formwork solution for the 100 casting sections on the CMA Tower

A three-storey-high steel construction has been incorporated into the core as a tension-proof link between the core and the exterior facade.

Another big challenge is a wall-return from 2.50 meters to 1.80 meters, which has to be hydraulically overclimbed by the platform levels. For this 70 cm set-back, the climbing scaffold is pushed away from the finished casting section, causing the scaffold to slant inwards in the next casting section. For this reason, Doka used extension shoes in the casting section for the set-back, enabling the climbing scaffold to be pushed upwards and slanted inward by 20 cm in this casting section. Doka’s vast experience and wide-ranging project management are making it possible to solve the highly demanding requirements directly on the site, in teamwork with all the professionals involved. In consequence, the complex worksteps are proceeding as planned. Due to the decreasing rebar quantities, once the steel construction has been installed the site team are aiming at a three-day cycle. ■

LL THE WORLD loves an international exhibition, and the contractors plant and building materials machinery industries put on some of the biggest and best. We itemise the cream of the coming crop; opening times etc can be found with a search engine by combining the names

given with the specific exhibition organiser, listed here in the cases of the events that are perhaps not so well known in the Gulf. First, the huge international get-togethers which no manufacturer can afford to miss – and that goes for most contractors, building-related officials/professionals and other customers, too. Over the next 12 months undoubtedly the biggest construction trade event anywhere will be Messe München’s Bauma in Munich, southern Germany, which opens its doors from 15-21 April 2013. Not far behind this huge event is the equally three-yearly Samoter which is always held by Verona Fiere in the visitor-friendly northern Italian city; next year’s dates are 27 February to 2 March. And just as significant as these but for a much smaller target audience is AEM’s road- and pavement-

orientated World of Asphalt show in San Antonio, Texas which runs from 19-21 March. The really big European federationsupported event in April 2014 will be SMOPYC in Zaragoza, Spain, but we don’t have the finalised opening dates for this CECE exhibition as yet.

Key events Many Gulf officials, building professionals and buyers are not able or willing to travel this sort of distance to see the latest in construction equipment and building materials machinery/supplies – and these days they hardly need to either because the galaxy of local events has grown so fast in both scope and reputation in recent years. Key events like Buildex, gulfBID, The Big 5, Middle East Concrete, Project Qatar, Saudi Build, and Intermat Middle East are

all well known here, so Technical Review concentrates in this special Construction Supplement on other exhibitions that can be profitably visited without leaving the Gulf or hereabouts region. Comparable North African events in both 2012 and 2013 are covered below this core section. First to come up is Inter-Build Jordan which is being staged by Jordan Fairs in Amman from 10-13 September, well ahead of this year’s cooler weather when most of the other trade shows start to be appear. This will be swiftly followed by IFP Iraq’s multi-sector and annual Project Iraq exhibition and conference, held in association with Riyadh Exhibitions Co in Erbil from the 17th to the 20th of that same month.

The Big 5 in Dubai is a well-established event

Opportunity Within a week this comprehensive event will be matched by Basrah Building 2012 (27-30 September, organised from the Egyptian capital by Pyramids International), the two exhibitions providing a good opportunity for international promoters to cover most corners of what is still regarded as a huge but ‘difficult’ market - especially at a time when a quiet period in oil prices seems to have set in.

All corners except the busy Iraqi capital, that is of course, so it’s the turn of the annual Baghdad International Development & Housing Exhibition, another Pyramids event, to open its doors from 2-5 December. This will be quickly matched across the Kuwaiti border by KIF Safat’s Mishref

Building & Construction Exhibition (18-24 December). Moving ahead to 2013 the first significant local event outside the limits outlined above will be Dhahran International Exhibitions’ Buildex Dhahran in March, followed a few weeks later by

Jeddah IE’s Saudi Building Industries Exhibition (22-25 April).

More distant Significant events being held across the Gulf and Iran over the next 12 months include the Tehran Confair (10-13 July 2013, IIEC in association with the national trade promotion organisation), followed by Palar Samaneh’s German-supported Iranconmin, also in Tehran, from 28-31 October. And from North Africa the following late2012 events have come to our attention. First will be SHM’s Oran Build on 2 October, followed by the near-simultaneous SITP Algiers (organised by Safex from 20-24 November) and Semaine du Bâtiment in Casablanca (21-25 November; Proxedil). Then it’s back to Algiers for Bâtimatec Expo’s SETIFBAT (26-29 November) Finally, what about the more distant construction exhibitions which fail to make it onto the top-events agenda above but which still offer a range of alternative venues and specialisations that really deserve a look? Trade exhibitions held in India, now a major source of both equipment and materials for Gulf and NA projects, include ITE’s Delhi Build 2012 (27-30 September), the India Technical Foundation’s Constru India (6-8 November) and BAI’s BC India (5-8

February 2013, Mumbai, described as a “Bauma-Conexpo show” in one source we found). Near and not so far will be YAPEX’s Baucon in Antalya, Turkey (18-21 October next). But definitely a long way off in distance – but not far ahead in time, will be this year’s Bauma China event to be held in Shanghai from 27-30 November. Finally an exhibition we haven’t covered before but like the look of will be Canada’s all-purpose National Heavy Equipment Show, to be held in Toronto on 18-19 April next year. ■

Another concrete expo coming THE NEXT INTERNATIONAL World of Concrete exhibition will be held in Las Vegas from 4-8 February 2013. Combined with the World of Masonry and Technology for Construction events this annual exhibition and conference is the largest global gathering of commercial concrete specialists, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. In 2013 it will once again be providing an unrivalled series of training seminars coordinated by Conference Manager Bonnie King (tel +1 972 536 6416).

This year’s seminars included Repair, Business & Project Management, Risk Management and Finance; new to the programme was a special training session on Placement & Consolidation. Full details of the industry’s foremost international networking event where trend-setting Gulf developments in issues such as ultra-high rise concrete pumping are always widely discussed can be found at www.worldofconcrete.com or by calling the WOC Exhibition Director on 972 536 6371.

Hire or acquire? FAST CHANGING CONDITIONS in the plant hire business were discussed at the European Rental Association’s convention held in Oslo in the middle of May ( www.erarental.org or +32 2761 1604). The trade association’s Equipment Technology Committee produces an invaluable series of position papers and guidance documents, amongst which we recently came across a very useful summary, produced earlier this year and now viewable on the website, on ‘Total cost of ownership of construction

equipment’ – most of the principles of which of course apply wherever the rental business is alive and well. This particular document covers the three main phases of an item’s lifecycle – acquisition, operation and maintenance, and ultimate selling-on or other disposal. First and second ‘Priority’ issues are neatly summarised on a neat single page of guidance for analysing these three stages, under the headings of Direct product costs, Indirect process costs,

Indirect opportunity costs, Related activities and what it calls Cost drivers. In order these include equipment and spare parts costs, purchasing and handling costs, costs of financing and rental, administration throughout the lifespan of the machine, and more than 20 individual ‘drivers’ for all these. It all makes a useful cellphone-handy summary, easy to carry and check over before making the decision about whether to buy or hire a specific item of contractors’ plant.

Compressors

Reducing costs brings energy benefits Here are some top tips to help you cut costs and save energy when using a compressor.

A

IR PRESSURE, FLOW, treatment, energy consumption, fixed or regulated speed‌ Selecting the most cost-efficient compressor installation can sometimes feel like a minefield, with so many options to consider. Here, Gardner Denver FZE’s managing director, Colin Fountain outlines his top ten tips to enable compressed air users to achieve optimum cost and energy savings.

1. Carry out an air audit When considering purchasing a new compressor or looking to upgrade an existing installation, we would always advise that you carry out an air audit. An air audit is a quick and simple process where a data-logging unit is attached to each compressor in the network. The results will show the exact pressure and flow demands of the complete system and will allow simulated selection of compressors to ensure that correct sized units are installed to optimise the system efficiency. This helps to reduce energy consumption and increase overall reliability. Modern on board compressor controllers also allow continuous data logging so if the system profile changes, the compressors can also be switched to ensure the highest levels of efficiency are continually achieved.

www.gardnerdenver.com

Industry averages suggest that energy costs account for more than 80 per cent of the total cost of ownership of a compressor

2. Specify the correct receiver size Always ensure that air receivers are correctly sized for the application. Incorrect receiver sizes can lead to excessive compressor cycling, which wastes energy and can place undue stress on critical components, therefore reducing the machine’s overall reliability.

3. Be aware of network pressure Be aware of your equipment or process air pressure requirements. Often compressors are set to produce air at a higher pressure than is actually required by the application, thereby consuming more energy than is necessary.

For every one bar of over-pressure, energy costs increase by seven percent. So by controlling the compressor to achieve the correct air pressure output, operators can make significant cost savings.

4. Size downstream equipment correctly Always make sure that any downstream equipment, such as dryers and filters, are sized correctly for the application. Undersized equipment will cause excessive pressure drops, and will compromise the desired air quality as well as consuming excess energy. Poor air quality can lead to reliability problems within the plant and process equipment.

5. Regular maintenance Ongoing maintenance of the compressed air system is integral to its reliability and energy efficiency. We would always advise taking out a full support contract,

to include regular performance and safety checks, to cover any emergency repairs alongside preventative maintenance, together with the supply of genuine spare parts.

6. Weekly checks on downstream filters Regularly changing filter elements can help reduce pressure drops. When a filter becomes blocked the compressor has to consume more energy to provide enough pressure to overcome the problem. Weekly checks on downstream filters will allow you to identify potential issues before they occur.

7. Use the right technology Carefully consider your system requirements and specify the correct compressor technology to suit. For example, if your application demands the highest quality air, you should specify an oil-free compressor, to eliminate the risk of contamination. If your compressed air system has a changing air demand and or shift patterns, you should consider a combination of fixed and regulated-

speed compressors, to handle any peaks and troughs in demand.

8. Don’t buy on price Industry averages suggest that energy costs account for more than 80 per cent of the total cost of ownership of a compressor over its lifetime. Installing a new energy-efficient model can soon reap rewards and Gardner Denver has worked with numerous customers that have enjoyed excellent payback results.

output. In addition, the compressor will be forced to stop and start, putting additional wear on components and increasing costs through increased maintenance and energy consumption. Correct sizing of equipment, or adding an intelligent compressor control system to select the most appropriate configuration of compressors to meet the system demand will ensure the most efficient and reliable operation.

10. Leak reduction

Ongoing maintenance of the compressed air system is integral to its reliability and energy efficiency 9. Eliminate off-load running Off-load running is of particular concern as the compressor continues to operate, thereby consuming energy, with no

Because air is non-hazardous, leaks in pipework can go undetected or are considered too expensive or time consuming to rectify. However, any leak in the network means that energy is being wasted, sometimes by as much as 25 per cent. A simple leak detection survey by the compressor manufacturer or service agent can identify any problems quickly and highlight the leakage rate and energy costs. Recommendations can then be made to help minimise leaks with remedial action undertaken at little cost. â–
