Sheena Whittle, head of The Personal Travel Agents at Cooperative Travel, said “We’re extremely heartened by the results of our 2018 survey. Over the past six years, we have been striving to create a supportive and nurturing working environment for our Personal Travel Agents and have continued to use our survey results to direct our focus and investment. This research really demonstrates our success in achieving that goal. “The statistic that makes me most proud is that, in the 2018 survey, 97% of our Personal Travel Agents say that when they sit at their desk in the morning, ready to start work, they feel either happy or very happy. I’d like to see that reach 100 % in 2019!”

Wendy Wu Tours has the advantage on new China visa legislation WENDY WU Tours has been granted special exemption from China’s new visa legislation which states all British passport holders have to submit fingerprints at the time of submitting a visa application. The China and Asia travel specialist is allowed to continue processing visas without fingerprints until December 3, valid for UK holidaymakers planning to take a trip to China before 2020. However, the operator will require all visa applications by November 26 to ensure they are processed without the need for fingerprints. Wendy Wu, founder of the company, said: “We know this is going to have an impact and so we strongly advise agents to contact any customers who have made a booking to China or any potential customers looking to travel to China to move quickly and get their visas with us now before the new legislation takes effect. New brochure makes cruise planning Crystal-clear for agents

HAD an interesting chat with Emma Lelliott, Belleair Holiday’s head of trade sales, when we attended an event, and I was surprised when she said Belleair had teamed up with Edge Global to provide luxury Formula 1 experiences. With the trips to Formula 1’s most iconic location lined up for 2019, Belleair’ Monaco Grand Prix package ensures customers will be at the heart of the action with some amazing views of the track. For race enthusiasts, the Monaco race is an enthralling spectacle – everyone wants to be there for the race weekend, including me! Belleair’s package includes return UK flights, four nights at a four-star Nice hotel on a bed-andbreakfast basis, private transfers and return train tickets from Nice to Monaco on Saturday and Sunday. Belleair and Edge Global have many Formula 1 package options available – other 2019 season dates are yet to be confirmed but if you get on their mailing list now, you will be ready when they are released. Email sales@belleair.co.uk − if you’re lucky, they might even still have availability for their 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix trips, with the race and associated events being held from November 22-27. At another event, I was pleased to hear Tim Beek from Thai Airways say that Thailand is starting to look after its elephants. Quite a few places are stopping elephant-riding excursions and changing them to excursions where visitors can feed and wash an elephant, which is much more fun. Let’s hope everyone else follows − well done Thailand. ‘If you don’t ask, the answer is always no’ and ‘If you feel like you are losing everything, remember trees lose their leaves every year and they still stand tall and wait for better days to come’.

ABTA urges travel agents to write to MPs about air passenger duty ABTA IS encouraging its members and the wider industry, including staff working in the travel sector, to write to their MPs about the need to cut Air Passenger Duty (APD) in the upcoming autumn budget, which Chancellor Philip Hammond will be delivering on October 29. The high rate of APD in Britain – double that of Germany – was widely dicussed by speakers at the ABTA conference, held earlier this month in Seville. ABTA is a founding member of the ‘A Fair Tax on Flying’ campaign and has been working with campaign partners to lobby the government and parliamentarians to cut APD by 50%. ABTA is encouraging its Members to write to their local MP to highlight the negative impact APD has on travel routes and costs. A template email is available from www.afairtaxonflying.org/find-your-mp/. The email asks MPs to write to the Chancellor urging him to cut APD in the forthcoming budget and register to support the campaign.

Will Brexit mean a slippery slope for European ski holidays? CLUB MED Ski has released a report, “The Changing Landscape of the Ski Market”. It found that 26% of Brits say they are more likely to take a skiing or snowboarding holiday outside the EU because of a perceived increase in expense and potential visa issues. Researchers interviewed 1,000 people, 700 of whom had been skiing in the past year. Ski resorts in the Americas could benefit with researchers finding an increase from 8% to 16% from British skiers and snowboarders to this region in the 2017/18 season, compared to the 2015/16 season. Within Europe, Club Med saw an increase of 10% in bookings to its French and Italian resorts in the past year, and Eastern European destinations, such as Croatia, Slovenia and Bulgaria growing in popularity. In terms of perceived value for money, respondents named Andorra, Bulgaria, Austria and Italy as good value, while Korea, Japan, China and Switzerland ranked the lowest, with the far-eastern destination ranking lower because of more expensive flights. The study revealed the top five reasons for choosing a country for a skiing holiday were amount of snowfall; easy to travel to; travel time; currency and exchange rates; and the ability to experience a new country. All change? Small change? Tipping culture confuses British holidaymakers AGENTS CAN help their clients overcome confusion in regard to tipping while on holiday by researching the customs of popular destinations. A study of 500 British holidaymakers, commissioned by the DCC Forum, found that 58% of respondents do not research local tipping customs before going on holiday, 51% tip in the same way they do at home regardless of their holiday destination, and 48% only tip so they do not cause offence. In line with the global rise in card transactions, 49% said they are tending to tip less during their holidays because they are using credit and debit cards more, and 37% of UK holidaymakers don’t tip on an all-inclusive holiday. Gino Ravaioli, chairman of the DCC Forum, commented: “Evidently, holidaymakers are anxious when it comes to tipping abroad and some are keen to avoid the issue altogether. While it can seem confusing to apply another country’s customs, the value of doing research beforehand is priceless. To avoid unnecessary confusion or embarrassment, holidaymakers should take positive steps to understand their payment options abroad, something that will improve their purchasing experience while away.”

WTMnews WTM taps into rapidly expanding tours & activities sector
Instagram, overtourism, wellbeing & tech take centre stage RUNNING FROM November 5 – 7, World Travel Market (WTM) London’s Global Stage will play host to a busy three-day programme and annual Ministers’ Summit. Monday starts with a look at ‘Instagram’s impact on travel’; reaching its billion-user threshold, the photo-sharing app’s influence continues to grow and this session will look to how to get involved, followed by a talk entitled ‘How to Get Billions of Video Views’. Monday lunchtime’s session tackles the problem of overtourism in ‘Coping with Success in Major Cities’ followed by a talk from G Adventures founder Bruce Poon Tip and the results of the first global State of Purpose in the Travel Industry survey. The day concludes with ‘Nation Branding in a Digital Economy’, with speakers including Lina Annab, Jordan’s minister of tourism and antiquities, discussing how the sharing economy, viral newsfeeds and connected economies are shaping tourism. Tuesday on the WTM Global Stage starts with the UNWTO and WTM Ministers’ Summit, which this year takes the theme of ‘Investment in Tourism Technology’. The afternoon then switches to the subject of Wellbeing, in which the 2018 Global Wellness Tourism Economy Report will be presented. Tuesday’s final session, ‘Creating a Killer Content Brand Strategy’, will tackle trends, data transparency and how to engage with digital consumers. Insightful trends from the ‘Out Now LGBT Masterclass’ ATTENDEES OF the ‘Out Now LGBT Masterclass’ can expect to leave this workshop with valuable trend information and actionable take-outs, to help them see clearly how their own business is able to better connect with LGBT customers. Hosted by Out Now chief executive officer Ian Johnson, the one hour workshop will reveal the latest LGBT2030 market research, how the market continues to evolve and key drivers in 2019 including: training, destination, leisure preferences, travel agents, OTAs, cruises and more. The session will consider how Generation Z is already starting to redefine ways the travel industry needs to approach LGBT travel as well as what ‘LGBT+’ means and how understanding gender identity and sexual orientation issues are increasingly likely to impact on the travel industry. Johnson said: “Each year Out Now challenges us to look at what’s next, by

presenting the information the travel industry needs to know to take advantage of opportunities through better understanding the LGBT travel market needs of next year – and beyond. We bring a consistent focus on presenting ‘what’s next’ in the industry and we are delighted this year to highlight best practice from two outstanding case study examples showing how to ‘do better’ in LGBT travel development. Switzerland Tourism and Emerald Waterways join us this year and they each bring compelling insights that will inform and benefit those attending the Masterclass. We are delighted to be able to bring travel businesses of all shapes and sizes valuable information and practical tools which they can take away to increase their own sales from the valuable LGBT tourism market.” The educational event will run on Tuesday November 6, 12:15 – 13:15 in Platinum Suite 3.
A NEW area dedicated to exhibitors in the tours and activities sector has been created at this year’s show. A study by travel industry research specialist Phocuswright found that the tours and activities sector reached $135billion globally in 2016, accounting for 10% of global travel revenue – more than rail, car rental or cruise. Start-ups and major brands – including Expedia, Airbnb and TripAdvisor – have moved into the sector to fuel “astonishing” growth, said Phocuswright, which forecasts the market will reach $183 billion by 2020. Simon Press, WTM London’s senior director, said: “The tours and activities sector is growing faster than other parts of the travel industry as more firms realise its potential. There’s so much diversity on offer but that means it can be a fragmented market – so it’s important for WTM London to create this new zone to highlight the sector’s range and help develop the technology and networks to overcome these hurdles.” Major names in the sector such as Merlin Entertainments, Big Bus Tours, City Sightseeing, Cirque du Soleil and Leisure Pass Group have signed up for the new zone, along with regional specialists.

OTTAWA TOURISM has announced that it will be returning to WTM for 2018. The tourism board made its WTM debut in 2016 ahead of a bumper tourism year in 2017, buoyed by the Canada 150 official celebrations. After a break from the show last year, the capital city is set to make a comeback with a significant presence on the Destination Canada stand; the latest in a series of initiatives designed to highlight the destination’s leisure and business travel offerings to the UK trade. Last year Ottawa saw an 8.8% increase in visitor numbers, which contributed to a record-breaking tourism year for Canada, with 20.8 million people visiting the country - including more than 800,000 Brits, making the UK the largest overseas source market. Looking to further build on this growth in travel to the city and wider region, Ottawa is undergoing a series of major infrastructure developments. This includes a new multi-billion-dollar light rail transit system, a renovation programme to all three of the city’s iconic Parliament Buildings, the construction of a new Hard Rock Resort. Go to www.ottawatourism.ca or visit stand NA400.

Get social on South Africa Tourism’s stand with Facebook Live sessions & mind reading tech SOUTH AFRICAN Tourism (SAT) launched a new social media initiative this year to help agents effectively sell South Africa and for WTM is set to broadcast agent Facebook Live sessions daily from 10:00 - 11:00. Originally running from June to October, the series of five Facebook Live videos were hosted by representatives from SAT and broadcast via the tourism organisation’s UK & Ireland Travel Trade Facebook page. Each video focused on one region of the country with a special guest offering top tips on the best experiences for holidaymakers and providing travel agents with insightful advice on the area. This initiative is planned to continue onstand at WTM each morning, so that travel agents can hear insider tips from stand members and participate in a live Q&A via SAT’s Facebook group. The tourism board will also be bringing elements of its immersive ‘Discover YOUR South Africa’ experience to the stand. Previously visiting and inspiring holidaymakers in major UK cities, the experience uses EEG-brain-reading technology to measure a participant’s reactions as they walk through a series of rooms showcasing the destination’s scenery, food & wine, culture, city life and wildlife highlights. This data is then collated to create a truly personalised South Africa itinerary, unique to each user’s travelling style. Swiftly following WTM, South African Tourism will be travelling to five cities across the UK and Ireland to connect with travel agents as part of its ‘SATSchool’ roadshow, on which attending agents will have the chance to win a fam trip space in 2019. Pop on by stand AF500 to find out more.
