Brits should ensure that their travel insurance is up to date post-Brexit, to avoid disasters while abroad.
A NATIONWIDE study conducted by Holiday Extras found that cancellation of flights, ferries and trains to the continent is a real concern for travellers ahead of Britain’s proposed exit from the European Union, pending a further extension. Holidaymakers have already started taking matters into their own hands, with more than a quarter (27%) of Brits saying they had postponed or cancelled a trip because of the impact Brexit might have – almost twice the previous record of 15% set last December, and far more than the 2%-4% who said Brexit had prompted them to postpone travel plans over the summer.
The nation is becoming increasingly concerned that the usually swift process from a UK airport to a holiday destination in Europe might be a thing of the past, with 29% of Brits fearing hectic passport queues. Other travel worries include healthcare (18%), local attitudes towards British travellers (15%) and increased mobile phone roaming charges (11%). Howard Dove, managing director of insurance, Holiday Extras, commented: “Brexit is clearly causing uncertainty amongst travellers. Having run our survey for more than a year and asked 13,000 travellers how Brexit was affecting their travel plans, we
discovered in September that almost three quarters of Brits are unsure if their travel insurance covers them for Brexit disruptions, and that the percentage of travellers postponing or cancelling plans had shot up to 27%.” According to the UK government website, to prepare for Brexit, travellers are urged to check that their passports do not need renewing before travelling, and ensure that their travel insurance, which covers healthcare, is up to date. If Brits are planning to drive abroad, they should have the most up-to-date driving documents including an international driving permit, as requirements will change after Brexit.

I READ an article the other day which could so easily be me. A couple going to New York were stopped in their tracks when airport security in the Isle of Man realised that their cat had climbed into their hand luggage. As they passed through security, the pair were ushered into a side room and quizzed about the feline discovery. The couple said that Candy the cat is always looking for bags and other tight spaces to hide inside. Airport security staff were puzzled, and repeatedly asked if the bag was theirs after it had been through the scanner. Once the staff realised it was a genuine mistake, they all had a good laugh before Candy was picked up by two friends and taken back home. Often times I have had my suitcase left open on my bed and gone to get something from a different room, and when I come back, Garfield is asleep among my clothes. He is terrible for getting into what he thinks are comfy places. When I was trying to bring Tiger into the UK from Crete, I remember the guy in customs asking if I would put my hand in the container just to show that he wasn’t concealting any contraband, such as drugs. He decided Tiger wasn’t hiding anything and let him through to be put on the plane and come back to Manchester. These kind of incidents do make you wonder how good airports are in responding to security alerts. The Isle of Man airport staff were brilliant, as the situation could have ended in the couple missing their flight. So all you cat and dog people, always check your cases! Insurance is another way to ensure a hassle-free holiday. When I occasionally help out at Idle Travel, I’m always pleased when customers listen if you are trying to get them to buy insurance for their trip. I have to point out that anything could happen, and you could hurt yourself. It’s a small price to pay to be safe, and they usually listen!

Titan to honour Thomas Cook trade bookings ESCORTED TOUR operator Titan Travel has announced that it will honour trade bookings which have been affected by the collapse of Thomas Cook. Following the agreements outlined by a number of travel consortiums accepting former Freedom, Future Travel members and homeworkers, Titan has confirmed that bookings will remain with the trade, subject to terms and conditions. To help protect the relationship between the trade and clients, Titan will transfer bookings back to agents and their new consortia to ensure that they continue to be the clients’ point of contact regarding their holidays. Titan’s agency sales team will contact all affected agents directly over the coming weeks to discuss the transfer of their bookings. Agents will be required to confirm their new ABTA number to reclaim the booking. Edwina Coppock, head of trade sales, for Titan, commented: “We greatly appreciate all the hard work independent agents do and wish to honour those affected by the collapse of the Thomas Cook Group as fairly as possible. We look forward to continue trading with all exThomas Cook Group members and homeworkers under their new consortiums.” Titan Travel is aiming to maintain good relations between the trade and its customers post-Thomas Cook.

Bees, bears and barrows, oh my! Get a taste for Slovenia SLOVENIA HAS been named European Region of Gastronomy 2021 and so will be gearing up for this by focusing heavily on culinary adventures in 2020. This year’s WTM offers a great opportunity for agents to come along to the Slovenian Tourist Board’s stand and find exactly out why the destination has been crowned Europe’s new food capital; from world-class chefs, farm-to-table freshness to unique culinary experiences. The 2017–2021 ‘Strategy for the Sustainable Growth of Slovenian Tourism’ defines gastronomy as one of its ten leading tourist products, thanks to its ability to feed into so many different aspects of Slovenia, the development of excellent visitor experiences and how it contributes to the dispersion of tourist flows and outside of peak seasonal periods. As an example this year, Slovenia unveiled a new 280km hiking trail through the Julian Alps. This circular

route leads walkers from the state border between Italy and Slovenia via several natural wonders including the Kranjska Gora region, the Sava River and the Soca Valley and encompasses the shores of Lake Bled before a challenging ascent into the Triglav National Park, under the shadow of Mt Triglav. However, while enjoying this adventurous path, clients can also sample a taste of Slovenia; when passing through the Bohinj region and
‘Slovenia’s sweetest town’, Radovljica, here they can try the country’s famous Lectar (decorated gingerbread). GOING LOCAL SAINT LUCIA is well-known for its natural beauty, golden beaches and honeymoon havens but new research from the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority has revealed that the priorities for British holidaymakers are shifting and that ‘going local’ comes top of the list. The results show that the majority like to get out and about to experience the destination first-hand; once on a trip, 74% of holidaymakers first opt to try the local cuisine, and 59% head out to get to know the history and culture of the area. This research of 2,000 Brits comes as Saint Lucia continues its island-wide Village Tourism Programme (first introduced by the ministry of tourism in 2018) which aims to create community tourism
destinations in eight villages: Gros-Islet, Anse La Raye, Canaries, Soufriere, Choiseul, Vieux Fort, Micoud and Dennery. 2020 will see further development of this, aiming to draw visitors to experience each village’s unique culture, heritage and history. Dominic Fedee, the minister for tourism, said: “We know that many of our visitors (72%) choose a holiday for the good weather and 64% for the beautiful scenery. Of course, we have both in abundance in Saint Lucia. But the experience here goes much deeper. This is why we introduced the Village Tourism Programme to encourage holidaymakers to get out into our local communities and also to create sustainable tourism that benefits all. As a small and welcoming island, we
can offer so many authentic experiences from a dip in the volcanic mud baths in Soufriere; fresh fish and music at the local ‘Fish Fry’ in Anse La Raye or the island’s biggest street party every Friday in Gros Islet.” Funds have been allocated to village owners to upgrade homes to create home stay accommodation, train villagers in tourism practices and develop the tourism infrastructure and attractions, with Soufriere already offering a new beach park, new look town square, bus terminal and market, and Anse La Raye set to offer a new waterfront for 2020, with an upgraded jetty, new look ‘Fish Fry’ stalls and several new local seafood restaurants, bars and a café on the waterfront. Help the Bahamas bounce back IN THE wake of Hurricane Dorian, the Bahamas at WTM will be a sharing a message that one of the best ways the trade can show their support for the islands which were devastated is to continue to encourage travel to those that remain open. This, in turn, ensures that the tourism economy continues to thrive and livelihoods are supported. For example, Nassau Paradise Island, with its big brand hotels such as Atlantis Paradise Island, Baha Mar Resort featuring Grand Hyatt, Rosewood and SLS, Sandals Royal Bahamian, Melia Nassau Beach and the British Colonial Hilton was not directly impacted by Dorian and remained open for business throughout. Douglas Trueblood, the senior VP of marketing of the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board will be at WTM to help convey this message to the trade. Show your support at stand CA150.

NICARAGUA IS OPEN
AS NICARAGUA welcomes increasing numbers of tourists to the country – with operators and agencies selling the destination again following the change in the FCO Travel Advice in February earlier this year – the country’s minister of tourism, Anasha Campbell, will be making an official visit for World Travel Market to promote the country’s new ‘Nicaragua Is Open’ campaign. Undertaken with the support of the Latin American Travel Association (LATA) the campaign will see minister Campbell present the latest news from this beautiful and incredibly diverse nation, showcasing to trade that the country is set to return to pre-2017 growth figures which made it one of the world's fastest-growing destinations and a hotspot for all kinds of traveller, from backpackers to Princess Eugenie. Among some of the main points, the destination will be emphasising to the trade at WTM include: safety; the Nicaraguan tourism industry is growing and ready for the increase
in UK arrivals; that it’s also a Caribbean destination and that connectivity to the Caribbean coast is improving; the diversity of its landscapes and micro-climates in a relatively small area offer an enormous array of experiences to visitors. Other major selling points include the fact that Nicaragua is home to the third largest tropical forest reserve in the Americas (after the Amazon and Congo), as well as the largest lake in the Americas after Titicaca; more than 96% of the tourism sector is boutique, family and locally owned; and that the country produces some of the world's finest products, including chocolate, coffee, rum, cigars, seafood, fruits, honey and more. Sustainability, co-operatives, ethical consumption and ‘zero kilometre’ produce are also a great selling point here. Agents with questions or wishing to arrange a meeting at WTM can contact communications.embanic@outlook.com Nicaragua can be found at Stand LA145.
Tampa with a twist VISIT TAMPA Bay will be launching its new cocktail book, ‘Tampa with a Twist’ at WTM. From the first brewery in Florida to Prohibition-era rum runners, Tampa has become a dynamic metropolis boasting a hip cocktail scene. Adventures on St Helena WITH THE news that SA Airlink is to operate a second-weekly flight from Cape Town to St Helena for its summer season (from December through to March 2020) agents can discover all that this destination can offer with a visit to St Helena Tourism’s stand.
With beautiful natural scenery and biodiversity, the small South Atlantic Island plays host to one of the world’s biggest wildlife experiences – the annual arrival of whale sharks – and further offers a variety of diving excursions. This is an island that has been shaped by its isolation and is perhaps most famous as the final chapter to Napoleon’s life. With 2021 marking the 200th anniversary of Napoleon’s death, agents can pop over to the stand to learn of its historic sites and where best to suggest to clients looking to experience the real St Helena for themselves. Bringing a taste of the island to WTM, there will be a St Helena Distillery on stand which will feature a selection of home– distilled drinks such as Jamestown Gin and Tungi prickly pear liquor. Go to Stand AF363 to find out more.

BEYOND PETRA Discover all that Jordan has to offer your clients… FOLLOWING A steady and growing trend in British travellers making their way to Jordan, the destination has welcomed even more in 2019 with numbers increasing by 28% from January – June when compared to the same period of last year. Increased air routes, new hotel openings and a focus on promoting the destination’s cultural and sustainable experiences beyond Petra, have all contributed to the growth in UK visitor interest and the Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) is continuing to invest in its tour operator and travel agent partners by broadening further
awareness of what the destination has to offer. The tourism board will be hosting a dedicated adventure themed training day in London on November 7 for all agents keen to learn more about the destination’s offering and will be running a fam trip to Jordan in late November. This fam will focus on Aqaba as a winter sun destination and runs in parallel to the doubling of easyJet’s direct routes into the city. These flights will begin on October 29 and operate on a winter seasonal schedule twice a week from Gatwick until March 28, 2020. Two new resorts – Ayla and Saraya Aqaba – opened their doors in Aqaba
welcoming holidaymakers with new four- and five-star hotel options, activities, a marina, restaurants and beach clubs. On average, temperatures reach above 20 degrees during the winter months, and additional developments such as Jordan’s first 18-hole championship golf course, wake-boarding park, the region’s first water park, and the world's first underwater military museum for divers, all feed into the transformation of this southern city into a standout destination for winter fun in the sun. Visit stand numbers ME140 and ME150 to find out more.
Take pole position & win a trip to Bahrain THIS YEAR, the Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority is offering WTM attendees the chance to race their way to a trip of a lifetime. Arguably set on one of the most advanced circuits in the world and a highly anticipated event in the sporting calendar, Bahrain hosts the F1 each year, and so WTM is inviting agents to race like Bahrain Grand Prix current title holder, Lewis Hamilton, and take on the track simulator to see whether they’ve got the skills behind the wheels. In a specially adapted Formula One car, contestants will be able to virtually follow the twists and turns of Bahrain International Circuit. The contestant with the fastest lap each day will win a trip to Bahrain for two people, including flights and accommodation, plus tickets to see the pros in action at the Bahrain Grand Prix in March 2020. Race on over to Stand ME550
Dive deep & CLYMB high in Abu Dhabi VISITOR STATISTICS place the UK as the leading European source market for Abu Dhabi − January to August 2019 figures are up on the same period last year as too is the average length of stay – as more arrive to explore the destination’s impressive cultural highlights, architecture, theme parks and desert landscapes. This roster of attractions is only going to increase in 2020, with the opening of the Al Qana National Aquarium. Set on the waterfront of Al Qana, near the Grand Canal, it will be largest aquarium in the Middle East and home to more than 33,000 marine creatures spread across ten aquatic zones. There is also the anticipated opening of CLYMB, which will
bring the world’s widest flight chamber and tallest indoor climbing wall to Yas Island. Visitors to the flight chamber will be able to mimic the experience of skydiving or scale climbing walls accessible to beginners, intermediate and expert climbers (up to a maximum height of 43m). The attraction will also be linked to the nearby Yas Mall, connecting CLYMB with more of Yas Island’s entertainment and leisure offerings. Travel agents keen to find out more about Yas Island might like to check out the newly launched ‘Yas Expert,’ a new destination training and certification programme at: www.yasexpert.com Go to Stand ME200
