More tourists would like hotels to cut back on the amount of plastic used in hotel rooms.

INTERESTED IN the hospitality and leisure sector’s eco-intentions, Taxi2Airport.com surveyed 1,528 Brits to discover the commonly used plastic items in hotels they would most like to see fully replaced with environmentally friendly options.

Taxi2Airport found that Brits would most like hotels to replace plastic carrier bags/plastic bin bags with compostable bags/reusable carrier bags (e.g. cotton/linen etc.)/paper bags (85%).

Thereafter, 79% would appreciate hotels taking the initiative to stop using plastic water bottles and instead provide water in refillable glass/aluminium bottles.

Interestingly, worn for the

purpose of establishing full or half board status – 68% support the idea of a woven rather than plastic wristband.

Additionally, half of Brits (50%) believe plastic door hangers (e.g. please do not disturb/please clean my room sign) should be substituted for wooden/bamboo made door hangers. 66% would opt for hotels that use and provide wooden/bamboo pens over plastic pens.

Yoon Sterkenburg, cofounder of Taxi2Airport.com, commented: “Hotels can be the key drivers within the hospitality and leisure sector to adopt and promote ecofriendly initiatives. With plastic being heavily relied upon for numerous aspects

within hotels, its use can be significantly cut down.

Especially considering the detrimental impact plastic is having on the environment.”

“This research certainly shows the frequently used plastic items in hotels that Brits would most like to see substituted for a sustainable/environmentally friendly version. The findings are encouraging for hotels with serious intentions to decrease their plastic consumption but worried about the impact it will have on the level of service they provide, as well as overall customer satisfaction, by doing so.

The key takeaway for hotels is that reducing plastic use is a valuable practice.”

Gallivanting in The Gambia THE GAMBIA Experience has secured three extra flights to The Gambia this winter, adding a Gatwick departure and new Manchester and Birmingham flights with morning departure slots.

The tour operator has increased its Gatwick flying with the addition of a Monday flight and now offers three weekly charters between London and Banjul.

The Monday service is on sale for travel from November 11 to April 20, 2020, using the company's partner airline Titan Airways.

The operator has also added direct Manchester and Birmingham flights chartering Boeing 737 aircraft with its summer carrier, Enter Air. Monday Manchester departures will operate from December 16 to April 27 and Wednesday Birmingham

Shearings gets revved up for Vietnam Grand Prix SHEARINGS HOLIDAYS has launched a seven-day tour that offers the chance to experience all three days of the inaugural Vietnam Grand Prix, including race day itself.

The capacity increase means as many as three extra flights a day will be running between the Finnish capital of Helsinki and top resorts in Lapland, such as Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo, surrounded by crisp winter snow and beautiful fir trees. This capacity boost will help more families get to Lapland this Christmas for the ever-popular Santathemed festive breaks.

THE DEFINITION of luxury within the travel sector has never been truly defined. It certainly means different things to different consumers. Understanding your individual customer ’s definition is the top priority, understanding their needs and aspirations − and delivering a luxury experience beyond their expectations is the key to success.

Starting with a conversation, should it be face-to-face or over the phone, I believe this personal contact is the start of understanding your client. This personal touch is what makes the difference between a luxury bespoke service or just booking online. You need to win that client over.

Remember that old saying, “first impressions count” – and they do. Make sure you are smiling down that phone – you are selling yourself as well as the product.

Luxury clients buy into the personal approach, and that means buying into your service, confidence and developing trust.

Luxury is personal and bespoke.

Luxury clients generally like to have outof-office-hours contact (within reason), be ready to answer WhatsApp messages, texts or emails. The client generally prefers to deal with the same person from start to finish and does not wish to be passed from pillar to post.

You have to constantly go beyond the standard, whether that’s with your documentation, presentation, ticket wallets and those little finishing touches.

Remember you are just not the travel agent in the luxury sector, you are the PA, the concierge and friend.

Keeping in contact is paramount – the predeparture calls, checking the client in, arranging dinner reservations, spa appointments, golf tee-off times, the babysitter for the kids, the list is endless.

Always be one step ahead of the client.

The all-important return call is so important.

A welcome home card or bunch of flowers makes you stand out. As a well-informed travel consultant, you are a luxury.

Make the most of your talents, be adaptable in your approach and you can retain your luxury client for life.

Tourism Australia tests out a new phil-AUS-ophy TOURISM AUSTRALIA has launched a global campaign under the theme of “Come live our philausophy”.

The three-year campaign was launched in Sydney with global ambassador and Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth on hand to promote his home country, as well as writer Kathy Lette and wildlife expert, Terri Irwin.

The play on words, “philausophy” aims to capture the philosophy of taking an informal approach to living, which research shows is highly appealing among visitors to Australia.

Federal tourism minister Simon Birmingham said the strategy is part of a $38 million investment that will be rolled out in our 15 major tourism markets.

“In order to grow the industry further and create more tourism jobs, we need to find new ways to sell Australia and differentiate ourselves,” Minister Birmingham said.

Andy Stark, managing director of Global Travel Group, says that even with the travel industry’s ups and downs, the passion of the people who work in it remains strong I FEEL very grateful to work in the travel industry.

It can be so rewarding, seeing the joy on people’s faces when they discover a new destination and create new experiences, or hear them retelling a story from a trip of a lifetime.

Travel changes the way we think and act, it opens our minds to new experiences and these new experiences can change our perspectives. Travel is almost always a positive, life enhancing adventure.

It conjures happy images

But to every yin there is a yang. Over the course of 2019, there have been a few devastating hits on the travel industry.

Getting ready to sell the Caribbean? Then the devastating hurricane arrived to flatten large parts of the Bahamas. Travel agents undergoing a high street revival? Then, along came the end of Thomas Cook. It’s incredibly difficult to know what to say in the aftermath of life-changing

“Day to day, we’re an incredibly lucky bunch, working in travel” of people frolicking on a beach, sipping a cocktail by the pool or exploring a local market and learning about new cultures.

It’s no coincidence that people build long and successful careers in this business, since it is an industry that is very hard to

Natural disasters cause people to lose friends, family members and their livelihoods. Big company collapses have enormous knock-on effects for workers and their communities.

But then what happens?

Often and in the case of the travel industry in particular, it has been heartening to see

an outpouring of goodwill and camaraderie.

In all the fall-out from Thomas Cook – despite the anger and the despair – nothing has come close to overshadow the great news that many of its stores are opening again under the Hays Travel banner.

John and Irene Hays are savvy business owners, and while their operation competes with our Global Travel Group members, we can’t help but wish them well as undoubtedly it is good news for the travel industry as a whole.

Elsewhere, tourism representatives in the Bahamas will be keen to

remind people that the worst damage was confined to its northern islands, and that this great destination is still open for business.

It is our responsibility to ensure holidaymakers are well-informed – and therefore well-equipped – to continue to travel to destinations that might otherwise see tourism dwindle away.

What’s clear is that travel is packed with brilliant agents, independent agencies and suppliers who want to make a difference.

We’re resilient, funny, industrious and dedicated to the good that our industry stands for.

BLISSFUL BLACKPOOL From Pleasure Beach to ballroom dancing, the Tourism Symposium brought to light all that Blackpool has on offer.

THIS YEAR'S Tourism Symposium saw the industry flock to the seaside town of Blackpool for an actionpacked two-day event, which covered topical tourism trends and disrupters. This included the increasing use of social media platforms, the issue of sustainable travel as well as new trends, such as the demand for increasingly personalised, cultural experiences when travelling.

A particular highlight from this year's symposium was the ongoing effort to reintroduce Blackpool as a tourist destination, and how recent investments into the town are hoping to kickstart this endeavour.

Keith Brown, CEO of the Tourism Society, said: “It’s a

great honour to host the event here in the newly refurbished Winter Gardens exhibition centre. It really brings to light that there is a lot of improvements happening. The hope is that people will be able to see all that is going on here, it gives out the positive message that Blackpool is improving.”

Boasting the Pleasure Beach, Madame Tussauds, and the Opera House as just some of its attractions, Blackpool has seen more than £500 million of investment in its infrastructure. There has been more than £10 million going into The Tower, a 4D cinema showroom is set to replace the observation platform, and the town will be seeing its first five-star

hotel. The plan is to transform the face of Blackpool, and breathe new life into the seaside resort over the coming years.

Speaking of the revamp, Philip Welsh, head of tourism and communications at Visit Blackpool, said: “We have millions of pounds of investments going into Blackpool and Pleasure Beach. Within a space of six miles we have so many attractions, and recently, Stanley Park was voted the best park in the whole of the UK. Not to mention, Blackpool is the home of ballroom dancing and the popular Strictly Come Dancing. There is now even a spin-off dance festival in Shanghai called the Blackpool Dance Festival!”

Foodie fun in Bristol AGENTS CAN recommend Bristol as a domestic destination for food lovers, as the city has been named as one of the best food destinations in the world, making it the only city in the UK to be shortlisted for the ‘World Food Travel Association's Food Trekking Awards’ in 2019.

Bristol’s tourism board – Destination Bristol – was named in the ‘Best Food or Beverage Destination of the Year’ category for its work in promoting the city as a foodie destination.

Speaking at this year’s Tourism Symposium in Blackpool, Kathryn Davis, head of tourism for Destination Bristol, said: “Our job was to create a framework and a narrative around food in Bristol to help put it on the international stage. We started working with a number of journalists and food writers who we were able to talk to about Bristol’s locally and sustainably sourced produced, breweries, vineyards, and the many vegan and vegetarian options.”

Last year, Bristol was named ‘vegan capital of the world’, beating out Portland in the US.

Galway’s year of culture 2020 GALWAY IS gearing up for even more visitors than usual when it becomes the European Capital of Culture 2020.

Long a favourite tourist destination for its stunning mountain scenery, unspoiled coastline, lakes, hidden bays and islands, this part of the west coast has everything people want when they think of the Emerald Isle.

Galway city itself is alive with history, hurling, horse racing, pubs, live music and restaurants serving up oysters and Guinness. Now a whole range of specially commissioned cultural events add to the mix for 2020.

It sparks to life on February 1 with a free week-long festival of fire that moves through six towns and villages, culminating in an impressive Opening Ceremony in Galway City on Saturday February 8.

It’s an Irish tradition to mark each new season with fire, and so different artists have been engaged to create four such fiery celebrations throughout

the year of culture.

On St Patrick’s day (March 17) the Mountains of Connemara will be even greener than usual, and maybe a few other colours too, thanks to Finnish light artist Kari Kola.

The landscape is centre stage in another work by Irish artist John Gerrard, whose installation Giant Mirror Pavilion will reflect its surroundings.

The region’s beautiful beaches get in on the act, providing the setting for a presentation of Homer’s Odyssey.

Other highlights include a dramatic interpretation of literary epic Gilgamesh

by Galway master storytellers Macnas, written by Marina Carr and designed by Julian Crouch. Booker Prize winner Margaret Atwood will be visiting in March to take part in International Women’s Day celebrations.

Over the course of the year, the programme ranges across music, theatre, literature, visual arts, dance, film, architecture, heritage, sport and

food. And most of the events are free.

Galway 2020 creative director Helen Marriage said: “Galway, with its ancient landscapes and histories, its different peoples and its many languages is an extraordinary place, where artists have always led the way. In these challenging times, when Ireland has been thrust centre-stage into the debate about what it means to be European, Galway 2020 invites a community of artists – those prophets of the future – to hold up a mirror and help us make sense of our world.”

Anantara rebrands Dublin’s Marker Hotel ONE OF Dublin’s most glamorous hotels is being rebranded by Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas.
