Welcome Message
His Excellency Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa Minister of Oil Chairman, National Oil & Gas Authority (NOGA) Kingdom of Bahrain On behalf of the Government of Bahrain and the National Oil & Gas Authority (NOGA), I would like to extend a warm welcome to all guests, delegates and exhibitors who have joined us for the 13th Middle East Geosciences Conference and Exhibition (GEO 2018) which is held under the patronage of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa. Oil and gas has played an important role in the Bahrain economy since the first discovery of oil in 1932. Today, events such as GEO bring a welcome level of expertise as the Kingdom continues towards the advancement of our industry, aiding our goal to meet energy demand efficiently, responsibly and with maximum value. NOGA is also proud to support GEO 2018 as part of Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, in which the exhibition industry and business tourism play an important role in economic development. Since its inception in 1994, GEO has established itself as the premier forum for the regional and international petroleum geoscience community to share views on current industry topics and trends, exchange expertise, present state-of-theart technology and innovation, and stimulate further research of technical and business activities in the Middle East region. Under the theme “Pushing the Technical Limits: Shaping the Energy Landscape” the packed conference programme at GEO 2018 incorporates over 200 technical papers across 51 technical sessions, over 260 e-poster presentations and 3 executive plenary sessions with influential panel members from IOCs, NOCs and service company executives discussing invigorating topics relevant to today’s industry landscape. The parallel exhibition features more than 100 exhibitors from 20 countries worldwide. It serves as an important showcase for the latest technologies whilst acting as a conduit for the strategic collaborations and healthy competition that helps drive us forward. Out of the many participants, we are honoured to receive GCC NOCs, service industry giants, national groups and numerous other specialists from across the globe at this exceptional event. I would like to congratulate and thank the conference committee chaired by Ahmad Al Eidan of Kuwait Oil Company, the supporting professional associations, and the exhibition organisers for all their hard work and enthusiasm in producing such a comprehensive event. I am confident that the exchange of experience and technology at GEO 2018 will greatly enhance our knowledge of this vital industry and will further contribute towards its advancement. I wish all participants and the organisers every success, and those friends who have come from other countries a very pleasant stay in Bahrain.
Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa

Welcome Message
Ahmad Al Eidan Deputy CEO - Drilling & Technology Directorate, Kuwait Oil Company GEO 2018 Conference Chairman On behalf of the GEO 2018 Executive Committee, I would like to welcome you to the 13th Middle East Geosciences Conference and Exhibition in Bahrain. The growth and success of this conference over the last decade has been remarkable and it is now a recognised and well established part of the annual cycle of leading geoscience events attracting major oil and service companies as well as technical experts from around the world to the Gulf. As we are all aware, the oil industry is still going through challenging times and despite a number of attempts to call the bottom of this current cycle there are no clear signs yet when conditions will significantly improve. The impact of unconventional reservoirs on oil and gas production has changed the dynamics of the market and as a result, technological advancements are key in finding and producing hydrocarbon reservoirs in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Examples of opportunities are in areas of improving recovery factors beyond the current levels, increasing fracturing efficiency in unconventional reservoirs, and introducing drilling automation, which altogether should lead to a future of sustainable energy under the current market environment. Under the theme of “Pushing the Technical Limits: Shaping the Energy Landscape, the 2018 GEO Conference offers an extensive technical programme of oral and poster presentations, field trips and short courses as well as activities for young professionals and students and provides an ideal platform to exchange ideas and share valuable knowledge with fellow professionals in an interesting and stimulating environment. During this annual gathering at GEO 2018, you will hear from all across sections of energy industry experts on current challenges, business opportunities and unconventional resources shaping the future of the oil and gas landscape in the Middle East and elsewhere. I look forward to meeting you in Bahrain during GEO 2018 and wish you all a successful, interesting and fruitful conference.
Ahmad Al Eidan

Michael Collins, Vice President Wells Non-Operated Ventures, Shell Mohammad AbdAlWahab Al-Qenaei Manager, Research & Development Group, Kuwait Oil Company Hisham Al Siyabi, GeoSolutions Manager and Corporate Technology, Petroleum Development Oman The oil industry is going through challenging times under the current global market conditions. The export of oil and gas from traditionally consuming countries has changed the landscape. It is expected that oil prices will remain close to an average of $53/bbl throughout 2017 and 2018. The number of operating rigs has significantly increased since a year ago, especially in North America in an effort to make up for the decline in the producing assets, however commitment to capital expenditure remains conservative. Technological breakthroughs are required to unlock hydrocarbons in an efficient and cost effective manner. The required step change should aim at improving recovery factor beyond the current 55%, achieve 100% fracturing efficiency in unconventional reservoirs, drilling automation through robotic applications, superior seismic resolution in acquisition and imaging technologies, and optimization of reservoir production and management which will lead to sustainable future energy under the current market environment. Tremendous amounts of data have been collected in the oil industry by operators and service companies in the upstream operations. Exploring and exploiting this huge data will play a key role in the way we work going forward and enable new ways to think and act differently and effectively. Big data analytics will provide new approaches to address inefficiencies and will improve our performance in operations and potentially reduce cost of production. The new advances in technology have been incremental in nature as seen in recent years. The industry is a slow adopter to change which is hindering our efforts for improved efficiencies and effectiveness. The industry needs to change the way we do things and start to think more creatively on how to develop technology. We need to look outside our industry and bring technology successes and adopt them to our operational procedures. The challenges we face in the oilfield such as stuck pipe, loss circulation, wellbore stability, and water management are still to be addressed. The industry keeps doing the same as before which gives them less uncertainties. Predictive algorithms, system diagnostics, early warning of deterioration and failure can be achieved if we use not only historical data but also current and future data in a full stream analytics. Data scientists are critical to our future energy and we hope to transform our industry into a true digital era where inefficiencies are reduced, cost is optimized, new discoveries are made and recovery is maximized. The invited panelists will share their vision and view forward looking at how we will think and change.

Unconventional resources are targeted for exploration and development around the globe, including the Middle East. With a relatively short cycle time and quick payout, the exploitation of these resources in mature markets like North America has revealed its commerciality. As a result of active exploration and appraisal campaigns over the last several years, a number of Middle East basins have been identified as potential emerging unconventional plays. These basins host the world’s largest conventional hydrocarbon resource and may have an order of magnitude higher of hydrocarbons in unconventional reservoirs waiting to be developed. However, in today’s market conditions, the global energy landscape outlines some key challenges for unconventional gas development. Building on the successful unconventional experience from North America, the panel session will share proven industry examples of best practices and strategies for unconventional gas development in today’s challenging market. With focus on resilience, agility and adaptability, the challenges facing these emerging plays can be transformed into opportunities. In addition, data gathering strategies during the initial exploration phase will be discussed to provide insights on the economic benchmarks used to assess and rank such emerging plays. Ultimately, this information will provide national oil companies, international oil companies, and services companies with the knowledge needed to evaluate, exploit and accelerate the development of such resource plays.
In the last two decades, the world has witnessed how efficient data flow among devices connected to the internet and machines has transformed and enhanced human lives and fundamentally altered every industry in what is known as the 4th industrial revolution. In the oil and gas industry, enormous volumes of data collected through sensors such as microseismic, fiberoptics, and logging have brought new challenges and unexpected opportunities. Similar to other industries, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will help combine data collected from geology, geophysics, petrophysics, lithology, mineralogy with data from drilling, completions, production, and economics to generate actionable insights that will help us find and produce more hydrocarbon in faster, cheaper, and safer ways. In this session, we explore these challenges and opportunities citing real life, value-added AI and IoT applications in the Oil & Gas industry.

Short Courses for Young Professionals and Students The Art of Science Date: Time: Instrcutor: Venue:
5 March 2018 08:00 – 12:00 hrs Dr. Roel Snieder Room 3
Who Should Attend This lecture is aimed at junior researchers and their mentors in all fields of science and engineering. Depending on the venue of the class and the duration of the lecture we will determine which topics to cover. Course Description The training of young researchers often takes place in a way that is reminiscent of becoming a professional in the middle ages. In those times, a pupil would work together with a master and while working along with the master the pupil acquires the necessary skills. Most graduate students (the pupil) receive their research training this way; by working with an academic advisor (the master), the skills necessary for being an effective researcher are assumed to diffuse to the student. This happens to a certain extent, but the process is often inefficient and incomplete. The lecture “The Art of Science” aims to fill this gap by specifically addressing issues that are needed to be effective in research. The lecture offers a selection of topics that include the following: • What is science? (What is it that makes science move forward, and how can we tap most effectively into our creativity?) • Choosing a research topic. (What considerations should be taken into account in creating a research portfolio?) • Questions drive research. (How can one find answers if one doesn’t know what the questions are? How to turn questions into a work plan?) • Goal setting. (Without setting goals we are adrift, yet goals are not everything; being in the process and giving meaning is part of our work as well.) • Turning challenges into opportunities. (What are common challenges and opportunities in research, and how can we use these to move forward?) • Ethics of research. (How do we connect our values to our work as a researcher, both in the content of our work and in the way we carry out our work?) • Using the scientific literature. However, while fundamental pore, grain and mineralogical structures can be understood at this scale, it is at the expense of a representation of real geological heterogeneity. ZEISS’ portfolio of light, X-ray, electron and ion microscopes is uniquely capable of solving these multiscale challenges, fusing, integrating and correlating data, and even observing reservoir processes directly in situ. This enables, for the first time, all pore scale information to be acquired based on macroscopic heterogeneity, with the resulting insights directly and quantitatively upscaled to the core plug and whole core scales.
