HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR 2017 EVENT With solid progress made since the Paris agreement, the focus is on maintaining green energy momentum.

The World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2016 was held in Abu Dhabi with the Paris climate change agreement creating a sense of urgency about action on sustainability.

The Paris Agreement was signed at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) in 2015 and the mood of last year’s event was optimistic. In 2016, WFES attracted 600 companies from 32 countries, and more than 30,000 attendees from 150 countries.

WFES is part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and the week will also incorporate Solar Expo, the International Water Summit, the Eco Waste exhibition and the Energy Efficiency Expo. At last year’s opening ceremony, Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Chairman of Masdar, commented: “Never

before has the political will to address climate change and achieve sustainable development been so resolute … and never before have market forces aligned so closely with political choices.”

Dr Ahmad Belhoul, then CEO of Masdar, gave an upbeat welcome address on the financial benefits of green energy last year: “The economic case for renewables is clear. Let’s all use this global platform to take action.”

He cited Jordan’s first wind power project, Morocco’s ambitious target of more than 50 per cent renewables in its energy mix by 2030 and the UAE’s target of 24 per cent renewables by 2021 as examples of the commitment to sustainable energy in the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region.

and it is expected that these will be widely discussed at this year’s WFES. Saudi Arabia, for example, has launched its first wind turbine, supplied by GE. It is located at the Saudi Aramco facility in Turaif in the country’s north-west. Jordan has also made further advances in the renewable energy sector by inviting expressions of interest in two wind and four solar power plants, each one of 50 megawatts.

Meanwhile, in the UAE Dubai Electricity and Water Authority signed a power purchase agreement with Masdar for 800 megwatts in the third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

Masdar has also made further inroads internationally with a special project in Mauritania.

It completed its second power project in the north-west African country, meaning that up to 30 per cent of demand from rural communities is now met thorugh eight solar photovoltaic plants.

WFES 2016 was a year of firsts for the event, with the debut of the solar expo. It comprised a dedicated area of the show displaying the latest innovations in solar technology, as well as offering networking opportunities for experts, innovators, suppliers and buyers. The Sustainable Transport Zone, a forum for regional and international manufacturers, also debuted at last year’s WFES.

NEW SOLAR PROJECT FOR NIGERIA With an estimated investment of US$150 million, 200,000 MWh of electricity produced per year and 120,000 tons of CO2 emissions avoided annually, the Nova Scotia solar plant will help Nigeria rapidly increase its generation capacity.

Scatec Solar signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Africa50, an African Infrastructure Fund sponsored by the African Development Bank and more than 20 African States and Norfund (the Norwegian Investment Fund for Development Countries), to secure investment into the 100 megawatt Nova Scotia Power plant. It is located in Dutse in the Northern Nigerian state of Jigawa.

The project has the potential to significantly contribute to the State of Jigawa’s plan to attract US$2 billion of investment into Jigawa and implement Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s plans to provide economic opportunities especially for the nation’s youth.

It was a positive event for women in the region keen to advance their careers in the field of renewable energy. GE and Masdar announced the launch of a co-leadership training programme for women to drive innovation and talent development in the renewable energy sector.

The agreement to initiate the programme was signed by Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, director of sustainability at Masdar, and Deb Frodl, GE’s global executive director of Ecomagination.

The selection of candidates for training will be through an online competition for women from across the MENA region.

Last year’s Eco Waste event was highlighted by an important announcement from Tadweer in regard to waste management in Abu Dhabi.

Tadweer, an Abu Dhabi-based integrated waste management company, has set regional standards for construction and demolition waste reduction, as part of the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Master Plan. With Abu Dhabi in an exciting phase of development, an effective waste management strategy is essential. The Waste Management Master Plan includes studies about the best practices related to waste management and costefficient processing solutions.

IRENA AND ABU DHABI TO FUND RENEWABLES The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has opened a new round of funding for renewable energy projects in developing countries. The round, worth US$50 million is part of ADFD’s US$350 million commitment offering concessional loans.

Since 2012, IRENA and ADFD have enabled US$144 million in loans to 15 renewable energy projects in 14 developing countries. These include off-grid, mini-grid and on-grid projects using wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and biomass. Grants from the first three rounds will bring more than 68 megawatts of renewable energy capacity online, helping 760,000 people.

“Many developing countries are blessed with abundant renewable energy resources, yet access to financing can still hinder development,” said IRENA Director-General Adnan Z. Amin. “IRENA’s partnership with ADFD helps overcome this challenge by offering concessional loans to quality renewable energy projects in developing countries, which then leverage additional investment. Funding from the Facility helps boost renewable energy deployment and trigger economic growth,

offering sustainable and affordable energy to people with limited or no access to electricity.”

His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD added, “The IRENA/ADFD Project Facility is a pioneering partnership that supports the developing world’s energy needs by tapping into their abundant renewable energy sources. Selected projects have the potential to improve the livelihoods of millions of people by facilitating sustainable economic growth, bolstering energy security and expanding energy access.

GSO HOSTS FIRST MEETING IN DOHA Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) hosted, in partnership with GSO, the inaugural meeting of the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) Technical Committee for Renewable Energy and Power Storage Technologies (GSO-TC13) in Doha, Qatar. The two-day event took place at the Movenpick Hotel, between 27-28 November, 2016 and opened its doors to members from a number of GCC countries.

Saudi Arabia set an initial renewable target of 9.5 GW of renewable energy by 2023.

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral resources, H.E. Khalid A. Al-Falih, will lead the Kingdom’s largest-ever presence at the 10th World Future Energy Summit (WFES) this week.

Saudi Arabia set an initial renewable target of 9.5 GW of renewable energy by 2023 as as part of the Vision 2030. The target is a huge increase on the nation’s 25 MW of installed renewable capacity at the latter part of 2015.

“Saudi Arabia has a long and successful history of fuelling global growth and prosperity by sustainably and reliably exporting energy to the world," said H.E. Khalid A. Al-Falih.

"As we redefine our energy leadership in the context of our commitments to climate change

mitigation and long term economic prosperity, we continue to develop and nurture meaninful engagement with public and private partners," added Al-Falih.

Saudi’s renewable energy goals will see the use of both wind and solar technologies, and industry analysis for WFES Solar Expo ranks Saudi Arabia highly for solar energy’s potential demand and opportunities for investment.

The Solar Expo ‘Advancing Solar Energy Solutions: Market Outlook’ report stated that the Kingdom, in a bid to move away from dependence on hydrocarbons, opened the market to greater private-sector and foreign investment, while increasing competition.

CLEAN TECH COMEPTITION RETURNS TO IWS The ‘Clean Technology’ competition will make its return to The International Water Summit (IWS) and will aim to find the best clean tech solutions for water sustainability.

The event will see three days of pitches in categories for Innovate@IWS, which include Municipal Water, Industrial Water and Commercial Real Estate. It will be held in partnership with Isle Utilities, a global consultancy that aims to accelerate the market uptake of innovative solutions. According to event organisers, 10 finalists have been selected with the event being supported technology talks and a showcase in the Innovation Pavilion.

“We want to help bring the next-generation of technologies in water sustainability into the

market, and connect innovators, investors, partners and end-users to achieve that,” said Piers Clark, chairman of Isle Utilities.

“The finalists will appear in front of a distinguished panel of judges from across the Middle East and North Africa to determine the most promising new solutions,” added Clark.

IWS 2017 will be co-located with the World Future Energy Summit and EcoWASTE exhibitions at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from 16-19 January.

Live pitches for Innovate@IWS will take place on 16 January for Municipal Water, 17 January for Industrial Water; and 18 January for Commercial Real Estate, with winners being named after the final session.

The inaugural meeting of the GSO took place in Doha

The meeting begun with the welcome by Dr Yousef Alhorr, founding chairman of GORD who welcomed all members and appreciated their efforts of mutual cooperation and coordination. In Alhorr’s speech he noted,"Organising such committees between the GCC states is beyond doubt very beneficial as it will facilitate in improving the codes and specifications of materials and systems related to renewable energy and hence, its performance in our region's climate."

Dr. Yousef Alhorr praised the achievements and contributions from the GCC states that were discussed during the meeting and shared the recent research projects in the field of dual solar thermal and solar panels carried out by GORD representing the state of Qatar in the committee.

He went on to explain how vital it was to deliver effective and continuous communication between those involved in the committee, in order to prevent difficulties in achieving the optimal performance level for the committee to work towards the goals set out by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

At the end, GSO-TC13 members praised the initiatives carried out by key research institutes in Qatar as well praising GORD for organising the first meeting of the GSO.

MONSSON ENTER QATARI WATER DESALINATION MARKET WITH PILOT PROJECT

ITALY HOST 43 STATES FOR MEDITERRANEAN CONFERENCE ON ENERGY IN ROME After COP22 in Marrakech, Rome hosted the Minsterial Conference on Energy of the Union for the Mediterranean on 1 December 2016.

The meeting, co-chaired by the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, and Jordan’s Energy Minister, Ibrahim Saif, engaged ministers and diplomats in a discussion on revamping energy cooperation as a source of wellbeing for the whole Region.

Monsson Group launched into the Qatari market at a conference held in Doha in March 2016. At the event, a pilot project was announced, the first of its kind in Qatar. It is a Reverse Osmosis Water Desalination Plant powered by renewable energy.

UK LIGHTING THE WAY IN SIERRA LEONE Sierra Leone's Rural Renewable Energy Project, funded by UK Aid, will benefit almost 400,000 by using solar energy to tackle energy poverty.

In Sierra Leone, 90 per cent of households do not have electricity. This limits opportunities for rural people to use modern technology to access information; to light their homes without polluting the air and harming their health, and their ability to use electric motors to pump clean drinking water from source.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Energy, the Department for International Development and UNOPS gathered in December at the first steering committee meeting to launch the Rural Renewable Energy Project. Over the next four years half a million people will benefit from at least

90 mini-grids powered with renewable energy.

Initially 50 communities, including their health centers, will be electrified in 2017 using mini-grids that will be operated by local entrepreneurs.

“Off-grid renewable energy is the future for countries like Sierra Leone,” said Henry Macauley, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Energy.

“Our country suffered greatly during the Ebola crisis,” Macauley continued. “This project will increase accessibility to renewable electricity services and enhance economic growth in underserved rural communities. It will also allow us to better respond to future health emergencies by providing much needed electricity to community health centers, paving the way to universal access to basic services.”

A MILESTONE YEAR FOR THE ZAYED FUTURE ENERGY PRIZE The prize plays a major role in driving sustainable development and ensuring energy access for all through the significant impact it is has across the globe.

The UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was a passionate advocate for conserving natural resources and preserving the environment. Through the Zayed Future Energy Prize, his legacy continues to inspire and empower pioneers in renewable energy and sustainability, shaping communities across the world.

In less than 10 years, the contributions and actions of the prize-winners have enhanced more than 289 million lives, improving conditions for communities across the world and facilitating partnerships and innovations that will capitalise on global energy and sustainability opportunities.

The winners’ diverse achievements range from displacing one billion tonnes of carbon emissions and generating one billion mega-watt hours of renewable energy, to unlocking clean energy access for just shy of 25 million people across Africa and Asia and inspiring 20,000 women and young minds to pursue ‘green’ careers. With five categories – Large Corporations, Small and Medium Enterprises, Non-Profit Organisations, Lifetime Achievement and Global High Schools – the prize acts as a springboard for everyone, from youth to big corporates.

In the same year that the Paris Climate Agreement entered into force, the prize received a record 1,678 entries to its ninth cycle, an increase of 12 per cent on 2015 and exceeding 10,000 submissions and nominations garnered over its lifetime. This extraordinary growth, year-after-year, is a testament to the length and breadth of the prize’s reach and influence.

At the same time, the quality of entries continues to increase, presenting a greater challenge for the evaluation committees to identify the outstanding candidates. But this is a challenge that demonstrates the attraction, relevance and strength of the prize.

Selected from 30 finalists across the five categories, the winners of the ninth Zayed Future Energy Prize will be among the most innovative yet. This is especially true of the project proposals in the Global High Schools category, the establishment of which was a significant moment for the Zayed Future Energy Prize in 2012.

Not only does the Global High Schools category underline the prize’s commitment to the UN’s

Sustainable Energy for All agenda, it also provides a platform to encourage young people to become leaders for the future of sustainable development.

There is local element to this particular mission and it is one way in which the prize contributes to the achievement of the UAE Vision 2021, through the objectives that seek to ensure sustainable development while preserving the environment.

To date, the winning high school projects combined have resulted in a reduction of more than 1,600 tonnes of carbon emissions and the generation of more than two million kilo-watt hours of clean electricity, benefitting 339,000 people in surrounding communities.

One year on from the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Zayed Future Energy Prize winners are already contributing to the achievement of five of the 17 aspirational targets for the year 2030, namely: ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all; take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy; make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

While global in reach, the Zayed Future Energy Prize has a role to play at home.

Launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the UAE Vision 2021 is a roadmap for national success that calls for greater innovation and sustainability from all sectors of the economy. By advocating for renewable energy and sustainable development in the UAE, the prize indirectly contributes to the achievement of this Vision, a part of which seeks to ensure sustainable development while preserving the environment.

With its demonstrable leadership in achieving ambitious global goals for renewable energy generation and sustainable development, the UAE has issued a call to action. In their entries to the Zayed Future Energy Prize, that call has been answered by true industry pioneers, innovators and young people that are forging a path to sustainable prosperity. The next Zayed Future Energy Prize winners will, therefore, be important for the part they play in achieving global goals for renewable energy generation and sustainable development and will continue to be necessary to incentivise action taken in these fields by businesses, organisations, schools and individuals.

Renewables steam ahead The International Energy Agency forecasts that Africa’s electricity demand is set to triple by 2040. Meeting that demand is a heady task, but a number of East African countries are rising to the challenge Utilising natural gas as a feed stock for generating electricity remains the number one focus as a power generation source – for example, South Africa has selected the ports of Richards Bay and Coega to build infrastructure for a US$3.7 billion 2,000MW gas-to-power programme to reduce its reliance on coal-fired generation.

However, renewable energy will continue to grow strongly, with its share in electricity generation projected by the International Energy Agency (IEA) to almost overtake natural gas as the main source of electricity. Power sector trends in Africa differ significantly by country, and indeed by region, reflecting different stages of economic development, natural resource endowments, institutional frameworks, demographic trends and prospects for economic growth. The geothermal capacity across Africa has been calculated at about 15GW of potential. The Great Rift Valley, running north from Mozambique to the Red Sea and beyond, offers a huge opportunity to tap geothermal energy.

In September this year, at a meeting of African heads of state on the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative, Ségolène Royal, the COP21 president, presented specific renewable energy projects for Africa without delay. On the basis of her visit to 17 African countries, and discussions with African leaders and analysis by groups of experts, a list of 240 projects accounting for more than 45GW of renewable capacity was drawn up. This includes 13 geothermal energy projects in Africa totalling 7,000MW.

Ethiopia Toshiba has entered into a partnership with the Ethiopian power utility, the Ethiopian Electric Power Company (EEP). This follows similar partnership arrangements with Uganda, Tanzania and Djibouti. The company signed a comprehensive agreement with EEP to collaborate on geothermal power generation projects and personnel development. Through the partnership with EEP, Toshiba will draw on its longstanding experience and expertise in geothermal systems to contribute to projects in Ethiopia, developing and manufacturing major equipment, creating operation and management guidelines.

by 2037, and develop geothermal power that will drive economic growth – currently, increasing at about 10 per cent per year.

Kenya Kenya’s Geothermal Development Company (GDC) announced a milestone. For the first time, it posted a US$15.5 million net profit in the full year ending June 2015, after signing a deal to sell steam from its Olkaria wells to the government. GDC sold steam equivalent to 320MW, helping tilt Kenya’s energy mix in favour of geothermal power that is greener and cheaper compared to thermal power.

With African Development Bank (AfDB) support, Kenya has received approval from the Climate Investment Fund’s Clean Technology Fund (CIFCTF) for a near US$30 million concessional loan to co-finance additional geothermal projects drawing on untapped geothermal resources in the Rift Valley. The programme will build on the energy advancements already underway in the successful development of the country’s showcase Menengai Geothermal Field.

In Kenya, geothermal represents 51 per cent of intra-country power supply, and is credited with reducing consumer bills by around one third. Kenya is building a 140MW geothermal power plant with US$408 million of funding from Japan. Transformation of the geothermal energy sector is a core part of Kenya’s economic growth plan for its expanding and increasingly urbanised population. In its “Vision 2030” the country identified energy and electricity as a key element of its economic transformation,

with geothermal as the lead technology. It is estimated that by 2020 the country’s projected installed energy capacity will triple from 2,177MW to 6,766 MW, with geothermal contributing around 2,000MW. Earlier this year, in May, Baringo in Western Kenya granted GDC access to its land, paving the way for the commencement of the first phase of the Baringo-Silali project, which seeks to generate The project will supply power to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.

Tanzania Geothermal Power Tanzania Limited plans to invest as much as US$350 million to drill steam fields in the south of Tanzania and build its first geothermal plants with the capacity to generate up to 140MW by 2018. After some preliminary exploration, Geothermal Power Tanzania Limited identified three potential geothermal fields. Two are found in the Mbeya region and one is southeast of Dar es Salaam. Furthermore, Tanzania introduced new policies, creating a highly attractive climate for foreign investment. This has spurred major interest in Tanzania’s energy sector from companies around the world. The government strongly encourages foreign investment, and the latest reports say Japanese and Icelandic companies are involved in developing geothermal prospects in Tanzania.

LEADING THE WAY IN SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, shares his views on the future for renewable energy and Masdar’s role in sustainable energy development.

What is your view on the global outlook for renewable energy?

Firstly, I would like to emphasise that we are proud that Masdar has been a first mover in the adoption of renewable energy and clean technologies, particularly in the Arab world, over the last 10 years. In the next 10 years, we aim to reinforce our position as a market leader.

The business case for renewable energy and clean technologies is stronger than ever. More than US$200 billion per year has been invested over the last three years in the renewables sector – and this investment took place at a time of low oil prices.

Emerging markets will be a key driver of the sector’s continued expansion, because they are where energy demand is growing the fastest.

Research indicates that solar power is becoming the cheapest form of new electricity, especially in those emerging markets that aren’t competing with existing large-scale conventional power plants. Today, the world is adding more capacity for clean energy each year than coal and natural gas combined.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are expected to increase their installed solar capacity 50-fold between 2015 and 2025. The UAE raised its clean energy target to 50 per cent by 2050 on the eve of this year’s Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Saudi Arabia alone has announced plans for an additional 9.5 GW of renewable energy by 2030. Outside the GCC, India is targeting 175 GW by 2022, including 100 GW of solar. And Morocco is targeting 42 per cent clean energy by 2020 and 52 per cent by 2030.

The fact that these goals are so ambitious illustrates the growth potential of the renewable energy sector.

What will be Masdar’s focus in 2017?

deployment of renewable energy projects in our home market, the wider MENA region and strategic international markets – with a focus on solar and wind energy. A Masdar-led consortium is developing Phase 3 of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, which will break ground this year. At 800 MW, this will be the largest single-site solar park in the world. Our second large-scale offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom, Dudgeon, will also come on stream this year. In November, we unveiled a landmark carbon capture utilisation & storage (CCUS) project in partnership with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Al Reyadah, which will mitigate an estimated 800,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. So our operations are well-diversified, geographically and technologically speaking, and this is obviously a strength as we pursue future

commercial opportunities.

Aside from expanding our clean energy portfolio, we will continue to ramp up development of Masdar City, Abu Dhabi’s flagship sustainable urban development, with the construction of new residential property, office space, hospitality and commercial real estate. Agreements for 400,000 sqm of new sustainable real estate development were either signed or approved last year, evidence of the impressive progress Masdar City is making.

What are the key factors needed to create an enabling environment for the development of renewable energy?

There are a number of basic questions that any renewable energy developer or investor would normally ask. Is the technology proven? Is the project bankable? And are the necessary regulatory safeguards in place now and throughout the life of the project?

Over the last decade, Masdar has advanced clean-tech innovation through the early adoption of new technologies at scale. Shams 1 in Abu Dhabi was the largest concentrated solar power plant in the world at the time of its inauguration in 2013. The Gemasolar thermal power plant in

southern Spain was the first plant to generate electricity 24 hours a day using molten salt storage.

Masdar is participating in a pilot project with international partners to study more energyefficient seawater desalination technologies as alternatives to thermal desalination techniques widely used in the Arabian Gulf.

Investment in technical innovation is, therefore, a key component of accelerating the adoption of renewable energy. That is why our relationship with the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, our core tenant of Masdar City and the first graduate-level university in the world specialising in advanced energy and sustainable technologies, is so important. Since its inception, the Masdar Institute has obtained 14 full US patents, published 1,500 articles in peer-reviewed journals, made more than 140 invention disclosures, and facilitated a number of technology-based startups. We partner with the Masdar Institute in around a dozen demonstration projects at Masdar City. Such collaboration is contributing towards the long-term development of commercially viable clean technologies.

In the UAE, and other parts of the Middle East, public-private partnerships – where the independent developer and the government are both shareholders in the project – have helped to attract investment and enable the development of large-scale clean energy plants.

In the case of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, having a reliable electricity customer in place – state-backed offtaker and co-investor Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) – has allowed the project’s bidders to propose extremely competitive tariffs.

A transparent tendering process has also given investors greater confidence to accept risk.

In terms of the UAE’s performance, the country has long been recognised as a hub for business and investment and it has been extremely vocal and proactive in its support of renewable energy development. It was one of the first countries in the Middle East & North Africa to announce a formal clean energy target, which it increased to 27 per cent by 2021 during COP22.

Investment conditions in other countries are not necessarily as stable due to a range of factors.

These include regulatory changes, currency fluctuations, lack of transparency, limitations to the scope of the off-take agreements, or the complexity of the asset under development, such as the need to fund publicly owned infrastructure besides the power plant itself.

The track record of companies including Masdar in renewable energy investment over the last ten years has demonstrated the importance of scale and operational experience. The combined value of renewable energy projects around the world in which Masdar is an investor is US$8.5 billion; Masdar’s share is US$2.7 billion. The gross capacity

of these projects is 2.7 gigawatts (GW).

How can government and business work together to implement the Paris climate agreement?

As we all know, 195 countries adopted the first potentially legally binding climate agreement at COP21 in Paris, the aim of which is to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius. The UAE was the first Gulf country to ratify the agreement.

At Masdar, we are fully committed to strengthening the role renewable energy plays in the energy mix in the UAE and around the world.

In order to deliver on the Paris Agreement, we need to scale up renewable energy financing significantly. Much of that investment will go to developing countries where the demand for energy is growing the fastest. The willingness of countries in the Middle East & North Africa to drive large-scale renewable energy investment is a positive sign.

There are a number of areas in which government and business can work more closely. As explained, the public-private partnership model has incentivised major clean energy projects in the UAE at increasingly competitive prices. The Masdar-led consortium appointed to develop Phase 3 of the Dubai solar park quoted a record-low tariff for solar power generation of 2.99 US cents per kilowatthour. That was a game-changing moment for both Masdar and the wider renewable energy sector – and was a byproduct of effective governmentbusiness partnership.

Local and international banks need to show commitment to the renewable energy sector as lenders, and developers like Masdar need to encourage such lending by delivering projects on time and to budget. Governments also need to ensure there is a level playing field for the renewable energy sector. Historically, in the Gulf region, energy and water subsidies have been as much as 10 per cent of GDP. In recent years, these subsidies have been rolled back. This trend must continue.

Today, there is widespread acceptance that government and business need to be doing more to mitigate climate change and advance renewable energy development. Interestingly, a global survey of youth attitudes towards renewable energy, sustainable development and climate change, which Masdar commissioned last year to mark its

10th anniversary, found that 81 per cent of 18-25 year-olds – the demographic cohort known as Generation Z – believe that government and the private sector share an equal responsibility to combat climate change.

What is the role of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in promoting sustainable energy development?

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is one of the first global platforms to address the outcomes of COP22 in Marrakech. ADSW is not only the largest sustainability gathering in the MENA region, it is a global platform to realise concrete action on the adoption of viable solutions in sustainable energy, water and waste, and the promotion of sustainable development as a whole.

The commercial opportunities, in particular, are considerable – and I’m confident that this year’s ADSW will bring about even more collaboration than in previous years among the business, government, academia and non-profit communities to seize them.

ADSW 2017 is particularly significant because it marks the 10th anniversary of the World Future Energy Summit, ADSW’s anchor event. The fact that around 38,000 attendees representing 175 countries are expected at ADSW this year shows how much the event has grown in terms of scale, profile and significance over the last decade.

Among the many countries represented at ADSW, Saudi Arabia and India will have a particularly large presence this year – in terms of both the exhibition and conference programmes.

Both countries are eager to deliver on their ambitious clean energy targets.

ADSW 2017 will be extremely varied, with a programme embracing policy, leadership, business and awareness. The awareness platform is assuming ever more significance now that renewable energy and sustainability have entered the mainstream.

I’m delighted that ADSW will be staging The Student Exclusive for the second year running, a highly interactive youth-focused event. I’m also looking forward to welcoming everyone to Masdar City for The Festival on January 20-21 – to enjoy a fun weekend of sustainability-themed community activities.

ENERGY MIX TO ENHANCE POWER GENERATION IN GCC As the region diversifies its energy production and moves towards the further utilisation of solar power, there is an increasing need for GCC governments to be robust in their spending over the next couple of years – be it in conventional or renewable power – in order to become self-sufficient.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reports that electricity consumption in the region is expected to reach 856 terawatt-hours by 2020, requiring 100GW of additional power over the next 10 years to meet the increasing electricity demand.

The total value of GCC power projects is currently estimated at US$247 billion, Apicorp reveals. Saudi Arabia has, until now, registered the highest project value worth US$118 billion and has plans to invest US$133bn in the next 10 years to cope with the Kingdom’s rising power demands.

Sait added that Saudi Arabia will almost double its capacity from 50GW to 90GW by 2020. The UAE and Kuwait have made investments worth US$54.1 billion and US$39 billion respectively until now.

Iraq and Iran will also aim to catch up and are showing determination to push their ambitious oil and gas plans forward.

Analysts say that strong economic and demographic growth, driven in part by the GCC economies’ highly energy-intensive industrialisation programmes, is leading to a dramatic surge in power consumption in the region.

While nuclear power and renewable energy are set to become part of the GCC’s energy mix, natural gas will continue to play an important role over the next 20 years.

Sunny days ahead for renewables Renewable energy – primarily solar and wind – seems to have become an unstoppable power in the GCC. The region plans to pump up to US$100bn into renewable energy projects over the next two decades, Apicorp suggests. Latest reports state that the solar equipment market in the GCC is expected to grow to US$8.85bn in

2022, according to an analysis by 6Wresearch.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia are and will remain the main revenue generating countries, the market research and consulting firm says. The main factors contributing to the increasing demand for solar equipment in the region include rising energy requirements, infrastructure development, declining oil prices and a greater focus on sustainability and renewables. Solar adoption in the region is projected to grow with as much as 4,000MW of new projects lined up for tendering in 2016, according to Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA). “Claims that the growth of solar energy will slow down in 2016 because of low oil prices appear to be unfounded,” says Raed Bkayrat, director of research at MESIA. “On the contrary, as countries in the region start to adjust their hydrocarbon subsidies, correct their electricity pricing strategies and seek to reduce domestic consumption of oil and gas, we expect solar to stand out as the single most attractive option for power generation,” he adds.

The UAE – According to IRENA, renewable energy has become economically attractive in the UAE, the leader of solar power projects in the GCC. “Increasing renewable energy to 10 per cent of the

country’s total energy mix, and 25 per cent of total power generation, could generate annual savings of US$1.9bn by 2030 by reducing fossil-fuel consumption,” IRENA reveals.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is building the world’s largest concentrated solar power project (CSP), which will generate 200MW next year and will reach 1,000MW by 2030. DEWA said that the project, which is the phase two of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, will be operational in April 2017. The 13MW Phase 1 has already been operational since 2013. It will provide for seven per cent of Dubai’s total output from clean energy sources by 2020, 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050.

Shams 1 CSP plant in Abu Dhabi is another epitome of clean energy. Since its inception in 2013, the 100MW generates enough electricity to power 20,000 homes and saves around 175,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia announced its plan to develop 3.5GW of renewable energy by 2020, as part of its Vision 2030. It aims to roll out 9.5GW of renewables schemes to assist with meeting future energy demand, with no timelines set for achieving this target.

Ibrahim Babelli, deputy minister at the Ministry of Economy and Planning, said that the Kingdom can meet its growing power needs only through the deployment of solar projects. He added that the rising need for baseload power to fuel industrial growth should be met by the targeted deployment of PV power and CSP. Kuwait – Kuwait plans to reach its target of generating 15 per cent of its energy from solar power by 2030. The government has earmarked US$9.9bn for infrastructure projects, including power, and progress is being made on greenfield thermal and renewable projects. Kuwaiti authorities are eyeing 9,000MW in additional new capacity by 2020 to meet power demand. The Ministry of Electricity and Water is seeking to generate a total of 2,000MW of renewable energy by 2030 by launching three projects. Construction is also underway at the US$399mn Al-Shagaya renewable energy park. Managed by Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), the 100 sq km complex, with a compound capacity of 200GW, is expected to be completed by 2017.

Qatar – Two national companies – Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) and Qatar Petroleum (QP) – are planning to join forces to set up a US$500mn joint venture company with the purpose of investing in renewable energy projects within the country. Qatar has also announced plans to set up 1,800MW solar power capacity by 2020, which is expected to contribute up to 16 per cent of total power generation. Qatar also plans to set up 10GW of solar power capacity by 2030. While Qatar has exceptional solar energy potential, price competitiveness and lack of a renewable energy policy framework pose challenges to the growth of the sector in the country.

Increased support for nuclear power Nuclear power would ‘free up’ more oil and gas for export in the GCC region, according to Apicorp.

In the face of rising electricity demand, the research agency says nuclear power should enable GCC states to ‘diversify their sources of energy and reduce their carbon footprint’. Apicorp reveals, “But the outlook is mixed. While six countries have nuclear projects under way, planned or proposed, raising power generation capacity by 39 GW, three Gulf countries have cancelled proposed nuclear projects in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.

“Fiscal constraints are one of the major barriers to progress, and the expectation is that nuclear power will account for only three per cent of the region’s electricity generating capacity by 2040.”

Factors that make the nuclear option attractive include: Nuclear plants emit considerably fewer greenhouse gases compared with fossil fuel-fired capacity; cost competitiveness has improved in recent decades, allowing nuclear technology to become a serious component of energy diversification strategies; and nuclear also attracts

human capital in the new energy sector. Nuclear projects exhibit lower operational and fuel costs over their lifetime – typically 50 years.

The UAE – The UAE’s first nuclear plant in Barakah, about 53 km from Ruwais in the Western Region, is due to come online in 2017 and by 2020. The nuclear power plant will supply around a quarter of the country’s electricity needs. The UAE started construction on four units of 1,400MW each to generate 5,600MW in April 2010.

Saudi Arabia – The OPEC heavyweight announced a three-year feasibility study in February 2016 to construct nuclear reactors at a cost of US$7.5bn in partnership with South Korea. This was initiated after the country’s nuclear plant was back in focus after the COP21 agreement in Paris to produce clean energy. The Kingdom plans to construct 16 nuclear power reactors over the next 20 years at a cost of more than US$80bn, with the first reactor online in 2022.

Fossil fuels here to stay, for now Traditional sources of electricity, fossil fuels like coal and natural gas, are still a large part of the energy mix in the Middle East region and account for more than 80 per cent of electricity generation. Even with lower oil prices, but renewables still being competent, the region is not letting go of its traditional sources of power generation in coal and natural gas.

The UAE – This year, DEWA announced a US$1.8bn project to meet the emirate’s growing power demands. Over the next three years, 64 more power stations will be built and connected to Dubai’s electrical grid. Each of the 132/11kV substations will have a capacity of 150 megavolt amperes (MVA). DEWA currently has 48 132kV substations under construction, in addition to ongoing work to upgrade existing substations.

DEWA is also looking to expand the existing K Station power plant at Jebel Ali to increase capacity by about 500MW. Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia, in June 2016, announced that it is planning to scale back solar projects and double its natural gas production.

Energy minister Khaled Al-Falih said, “Gas makes up 50 per cent of our energy mix now and we aspire to raise this to 70 per cent from all sources.”

The Kingdom is already eyeing Iranian gas field Farzan-B and has drilled wells on the area falling in its territory, which it has named Hasbah field, to begin production. The Saudi Arabian side of the field contains around three trillion cubic feet of gas.

Production of dry gas or fuel for use in power plants will rise to 17.8bn cubic feet per day from 12bn cubic feet, according to the plan.

Kuwait – Kuwait’s first gas-fired combined cycle power and water desalination plant — Azzour North One — is due for completion by Q4 2016.

Once completed, the plant will boast a capacity of more than 1,500MW of electricity, which represents 10 per cent of the country’s power capacity.

Qatar – The Apicorp report outlines, “Our estimates suggest that Qatar will need to invest around US$9bn to add 5.2GW to meet rising demand in the medium term – US$6bn in generation and US$3bn in transmission and distribution (T&D).” State-owned Kahramaa has recently launched a mega project to monitor its electricity distribution network in a bid to prevent outages. The monitoring for asset management of 11kV Electricity Distribution Network, which serves households, would have the capability to sense the conditions that could cause large-scale power supply disruptions. The scale of the above project is being considered as first-of-its-kind in the GCC region, according to Kahramaa.

Securing the future Solar power can drive the future of GCC countries, as the region’s 60 per cent surface area has excellent suitability for solar-photovoltaic deployment. But the lack of a clear policy framework is one of the main reasons for limited solar activity in the GCC. Therefore, re-energising the renewable energy programmes will give a boost to the solar power sector in the GCC. However, countries like Saudi Arabia still depend on crude oil for power, a trend that is to continue in the absence of alternatives.

The key is for the GCC to monetise its natural gas reserves to displace crude oil for domestic power consumption. While nuclear power and renewable energy are set to become a part of the GCC’s energy mix, fossil fuels will continue to play an important role, at least over the next 20 years.

SA industry has saved approximately US$440,000 in resources, including 133,000 kilolitres of water, after 16 manufacturing facilities nationwide each hosted a DTI-funded intern to conduct onsite resource efficiency assessments over a 12-month period. Water savings accounted for 48 per cent of overall savings, with energy savings accounting for 43 per cent. An additional US$2.6 million in resource savings has been identified at the plants in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

At a cost of just US$290,000 to implement, the economic and environmental benefits of the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) Internship Programme are immense.

It is a programme in the skills development activities of the DTI’s National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa (NCPC-SA).

Science and engineering graduates interned for 12 months in late 2015, and were equipped with skills through the NCPC-SA training programme in early 2016, then placed in host plants under the guidance of expert mentors appointed by the NCPC-SA. The interns were taught ISO 50 0001 energy management plans, how to conduct an RECP assessment, and identifying water saving opportunities, while working at the host plant.

“The programme is designed to not only teach interns the skills to do a plant assessment and identify savings opportunities at their host plants, but to also assist the company with implementation to realise actual resource and financial savings,” says Wynand van der Merwe, NCPC-SA Skills Development Manager.

“These graduates represent a fairly new career path, but one that has already proven invaluable to South African industry,” said Ndivhuho Raphulu, NCPC-SA Director. “We’ve seen again and again that resource management cuts millions in operating costs, making South African factories more productive, and ultimately more competitive.”

Of the 16 interns, nine women participated in the programme. Their work included staff energy programmes, waste segregation, gas usage monitoring, waste separation and water use, installing water guns, power factor corrections, and improving assembly line bottlenecks. One intern’s process flow was used by major clients of host plants. Another ensured that approval and budget allocation was finalised for all identified savings projects. The interns were also tasked with ensuring that their projects could outlast them and be implemented even if they left the plant.

Food Group); Evile Viteka (GlaxoSmithKline). Three graduates have been offered permanent positions within the programme, and another has been employed by a host company. The 2017 NCPC-SA Internship Programme will kick off early in the new year and interns have already been recruited countrywide.

About the NCPC-SA and RECP The National Cleaner Production Centre is a programme of the DTI hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The NCPC-SA assists industry to implement RECP through programmes, including the internship, and it implements the South African Industrial Energy Efficiency Project, which has saved industry US$123.6 million in energy costs in five years. This was largely achieved through a skills development approach, as industrial energy efficiency experts were trained through practical implementation in industry plants. The internship programme was run in three previous years as a six-month programme, but the new 12-month model has allowed for a more in-depth training and greater host plant implementation. DEWA AT THE FOREFRONT OF RENEWABLES INITIATIVES

ENEC PUSHES UAE NUCLEAR GOALS FORWARD

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched several projects and initiatives to achieve the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who launched the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, with the ambitious of transforming Dubai into the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050, and achieve the Carbon Abatement Strategy which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 16 per cent by 2021. The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy target is for clean energy sources as seven per cent of Dubai’s total power output by 2020, 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050. One of the big projects to support the strategy, is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is the largest single-site solar park in the world. It has a planned capacity of 5,000MW by 2030, and will help reduce 6.5mn tonnes of carbon emissions by 2030, supporting the green initiatives and programmes carried out by the government to reduce carbon emissions.

Meanwhile, DEWA’s new headquarters named Al-Sheraa, which is Arabic for sail, will be the tallest, largest net Zero Energy Building (ZEB) in the world, and it will incorporate multiple smart technologies. The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) is responsible for implementing the UAE’s peaceful civil nuclear energy programme to deliver safe, clean, reliable and efficient nuclear energy to help power the growth of the nation.

The UAE government aims to develop and implementa world-class nuclear energy programme; incorporating high standards of safety, security, transparency and non-proliferation, a policy that has secured the support of the international community. Since its inception in December 2009, ENEC has worked diligently to meet these high standards across its business and operations. Following the receipt of the Construction License for Units 1 and 2 in July 2012, construction is now underway at Barakah in Abu Dhabi.

Now, ENEC has announced a new phase in the construction of Units 3 and 4 at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, with completion of these units now more than 50 per cent complete.

The construction achievements include the successful setting in place of Unit 3’s Reactor Containment Building (RCB) Liner Dome section, effectively installing the roof of the structure which now houses the Reactor Vessel (RV). Further, the completion of Unit 4’s Turbine Generator Operating Deck and the setting of the last Reactor Containment Liner Plate Rings mark important progress for the units.

The building will use the latest technologies including Internet of Things (IoT), Big and Open Data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The total energy used in the building during a year is equal to or less than the energy produced on site during that year. DEWA’s new headquarters is targeted to receive platinum rating by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), where platinum is the highest certification. The building is targeted to use 50 per cent less water than regular buildings. The green spaces will be almost 50 per cent of the building’s area. To be Zero Energy Building (ZEB), employees will manage their energy consumption using a smart app that informs them of the amount of energy they use to assist them in improving energy budget management. Al-Sheraa will use state-of-the-art building management tools and feature a control centre that will allow essential systems to operate and will shut down non-essential systems, including air conditioning and lighting.

PAVILION FOCUS: GERMANY LEADING WITH WIND AND SUN In its quest to eliminate fossil fuel use, wind and solar power are leading the charge with growth slated for hydropower and biomass.

Germany’s electricity generated from renewable sources has tripled in the past 10 years. By 2025, the share of energy from renewable sources is expected to increase from 40 per cent to 45 per cent by 2025 and to more than 80 per cent by 2050.

Solar and wind power are the two main sources of renewable energy in Germany, providing 20 per cent of the country’s total electricity. Hydropower and other renewables, such as biomass and waste, accounted for 11 per cent of Germany’s total electricity supply in 2015.

Germany’s Energiewende (energy transition) policy goals include eliminating non-renewable sources from the country’s energy mix, phasing out nuclear power generation, reducing energy imports and decreasing carbon emissions.

Reducing coal reliance is a major goal – in 2015, 44 per cent of Germany’s electricity production came from coal. Eleven per cent came from other fossil fuels and 15 per cent from nuclear energy.

The German government has supported renewable power generation by promising a fixed, above-market price for every kilowatt hour of energy generated by solar or wind and delivered to the grid. Under German law, these renewable sources has priority over traditional sources, so other forms of generation need to be curtailed to accommodate fluctuations in renewable electricity production. In the past five years, this policy has helped double the electricity generated from wind.

The core competence comprises the complete process chain for solar modules, from the development stage through to quality assurance, sales and service. In 2016, photovoltaic battery storage systems were added to the portfolio.

The company formed partnerships with manufacturers of wafers, cells and batteries to ensure it uses the latest technology in its production of solar modules and battery systems.

Renewables Academy The Renewables Academy (RENAC) provides training in green energy, and business services so that companies and individuals can develop capacities for sustainable energy supply. Since RENAC was founded in 2008, more than 7,500 participants from 145 countries have been involved in training programmes.

RENAC’s training programmes can be tailored to suit the individual needs of clients and there is a strong focus on hands-on learning.

PAVILION FOCUS: FRANCE AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR 2030 France has committed to meeting European Union energy strategy which aims to significantly increase renewables in the coming decades.

In August 2015, France adopted an energy transition programme that outlines targets which aim to gradually decarbonise the energy mix. The programme has been designed to be aligned with the European Union’s energy strategy, increasing the proportion of renewables in the energy mix.

For France, the objectives are to reduce energy consumption by 50 per cent by 2050, based on 2012 energy consumption levels. The intermediate target for 2030 is an overall reduction in consumption of 20 per cent. By 2030, there is an additional target of reducing fossil fuel consumption by 2030 on 2012 levels. France is also aiming to reduce its production of nuclear energy by one-third. Currently it makes up 75 per cent of the energy mix, the highest level globally.

In November 2016, the French government announced new targets for renewable energy capacity up until 2023. The objectives have been published in a PPE/ The PPE targets are based on total renewable energy capacity of 69,980 MW in the low scenario and 76,743 in the high scenario by 2023. At the end of 2015, strong renewables growth was reported in comparison to 2014 with new wind power installations increasing by 23.3 per cent and solar PV capacity up by 25 per cent.

Enekio Enekio, founded in 2011 in Cap Alpha of Montpellier Agglomeration in France, develops and deploys solutions for remotely managing environmental energy problems. The company services industrial infrastructure and communities.

During its first year of operation, Enekio was active in the electric engineering market. In 2012, the company built strategic partnerships with technical partners and suppliers, and focused on business development and commercial deployment. By 2013, Enekio focused on the implementation of its research and development programme for remote management solutions.

COLDINNOV A start-up company, COLDINNOV develops refrigeration technology based on solid/gas thermochemical reaction. This creates a natural refrigerant fluid and it recovers wasted or sustainable heat. It is a green alternative to conventional refrigeration, which is provided mostly by compression systems. These systems are characterised by high energy consumption, representing 15 per cent of global electricity production; and the use of refrigerant fluids, most of which are fluorine-based, harmful to the ozone layer and contribute to global warming.

COLDINNOV’s technology means no compressor is used, making the products more energyefficient. There are no moving parts and it operates silently. The company’s technology is adaptable to several power levels and several energy vectors as the primary heat source. In August 2016, an industrial pilot using COLDINNOV technology was launched. It uses cogeneration via a power generator with reactors. The company makes static and mobile refrigeration units, as well as photovoltaic powered refrigerators and air conditioning units. Another innovation is COLDINNOV’s solar-powered coolroom. For the dairy sector, COLDINNOV has developed solarpowered, refrigerated milk tanks and cheese ageing cabinets. www.coldinnov.com
