STEPPING UP SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS The Paris Agreement to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change brought together 195 governments agreeing to ambitious targets over the coming decade. Leaders at WFES 2017 provided insights on the steps taken to mitigate the risks.

Discussion underway on effective business strategies for better renewable targets.

At the 10th edition of WFES, leaders and decision makers from the UAE and across the world came together to discuss government and business strategies in order to effectively implement the Paris Climate Agreement.

Speaking at a panel discussion that included Masdar, IRENA, WWF and countries including India and Peru, the two key elements that all agreed upon was that innovation is key, and people are the most important assets.

In the opening speech, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO, Masdar, said that economics and

innovation have played a tremendous role in making renewable energy a reality, adding that this was demonstrated by DEWA, which has completed 80 per cent of the largest single-site solar park in the world – the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. He also announced that Masdar is developing the first floating wind farm, another example of how the industry is moving forward.

Following Masdar’s lead, Felipe Calderón, chairman, Global Commission on the Economy & Climate, noted that even if all the conditions to

fulfill renewable energy targets were met, it was important to provide investors with the right market for good returns. “Planning is important but so is implementation, and beyond that, choosing the right financial institution.”

However, the most vital aspect of any good project is the people. “Invest in people; create thinkers with the technical skills and financial capabilities to make effective decisions about financing projects, which will be good for the environment and also for companies.”

With that, it is possible to get real business and profits while saving the environment. “It is not just in the human interest to prevent and mitigate climate change, it is also in their economic selfinterest to join the fight. It is not only about reducing the threats, it is about being the stronger

economy. We need to create the right economic incentives for a viable future.”

From the Indian perspective, Piyush Goyal, Minister of State with Independent Charge for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, spoke about how the subcontinent is taking “big” renewable steps with four Ps – public, private, policymakers and professors (academia).

According to the Minister, “It is important that public and private parties run programmes together to implement them effectively and close the gap between capital and technology.

Policymakers have to play the role of facilitators and academia can be the thinking cap behind bringing in viable projects. I believe that in the current economic scenario, it is time we started challenging the targets and try to exceed them.”

However, Calderón challenged this view, saying that if projects are implemented too fast, it may

increase the likelihood of costs being overrun. He advised investors to think logically and go ahead.

Talking from a private investor perspective, Masdar’s CEO commented, “Policy is important, the appetite for investors like us is crucial but finance is very important. These three ingredients are critical. Lastly, we will not be here without the brainpower of the scientists who developed these technologies.”

As noted by Eithne Treanor, international energy commentator, the renewables industry was built on hope and sheer determination for building a cleaner and sustainable future.

This year’s WFES welcomed around 880 exhibiting companies and 38,000 attendees from 175-plus countries. That is three times the attendance in the first year, as announced by the Masdar CEO. “An incredible milestone to mark the event’s 10th anniversary,” he asserted.

TOYOTA TO EXPLORE POTENTIAL OF HYDROGEN ENERGY USE IN THE UAE Toyota Motor Corporation has agreed to collaborate with Masdar, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Air Liquide, and Toyota distributor Al-Futtaim Motors in a joint research programme to explore the potential of hydrogen energy use in the UAE for the creation of a sustainable, low-carbon society. As part of the programme, Toyota will begin driving and refuelling demonstration tests of the Mirai fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in the UAE from May 2017.

The agreement was announced on 16 January at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW). The programme partners will jointly research on key issues involving the establishment of a hydrogenbased society, including hydrogen production, logistics, scalability, and business feasibility. The research is expected to take place in part at Masdar Institute.

Utilising a hydrogen station that is to be built in May 2017, Toyota will conduct a complete range of driving and refuelling tests under extreme heat, dust, and other conditions unique to the local environment.

Toyota will also provide short-term leases to UAE government institutions and opinion leaders to promote better understanding of FCVs and hydrogen-based societies.

“The UAE has vast potential for the expansion of hydrogen production. The country has excess capacity at hydrogen production facilities located at oil refineries, and the ability to produce hydrogen as a byproduct at caustic soda and other factories, not to mention the production potential from mega solar power stations,” said Takeshi Uchiyamada, chairman of the Toyota Motor Corporation Board of Directors, who gave a speech at the Abu Dhabi Global Action Day at ADSW. Toyota is currently selling the hydrogen-fuelled zero emissions Mirai FCV, that only emits water in Japan, the USA and Europe.

Masdar Institute signs MoU with Thales and MINES ParisTech for innovative airship Masdar Institute of Science and Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 17 January with French company Thales/Thales Alenia Space and French engineering university MINES ParisTech to develop applications for the Stratobus™ drone-satellite hybrid airship.

The agreement was signed at WFES in the presence of the French ambassador to the UAE, His Excellency Michel Miraillet. The signatories were Dr. Behjat Al Yousuf, interim provost of Masdar Institute; Cathy Noguez, director International Affairs, Thales Alenia Space; Olivier Cousergue, key account manager, Air Force/ Air Defence, Thales; and Prof. Thierry Ranchin, director of the Center Observation, Impacts, and Energy, MINES ParisTech.

Stratobus™ is currently being developed by Thales Alenia Space together with French and European partners, and functions effectively as a hybrid between a drone and a satellite. With its involvement in the Stratobus project, Masdar Institute will advance its role in driving cutting-

The airship will carry technical equipment that allows it to perform surveillance and environmental monitoring, and provide telecommunications services. To be fully autonomous, Stratobus will incorporate innovative technologies such as high efficiency flexible solar cells supplying electrical power. Thales Alenia Space and partners plan to launch the first qualification and certification flight in 2020.

PROMOTING LOW CARBON DEVELOPMENT Dubai Carbon, a locally developed think tank for environmental economics, is playing a key role in promoting sustainable development in Dubai and the wider region.

“Dubai Carbon was created in 2009 alongside the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy as a knowledge repository to bring regional specific initiatives in low carbon development,” says Ivano Iannelli, CEO of Dubai Carbon.

“We’ve grown quite a bit since then, and have a heritage of very big names as our shareholders, such as DUBAL, DEWA, Empower and ENOC. Starting from their own projects, we were able to consolidate in a very short time a lot of experience which is unique to the region.

“Our focus is to identify commercially viable green economy initiatives to pilot, implement and replicate. We find ways to improve the business processes of our stakeholders and help them to reduce their emissions. One of our successes is the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy, which is an aggregation of all the strategies of key stakeholders in the Dubai economy; it was approved at Supreme Council and Executive Council level.“ “We also have a number of success stories that we showcase on behalf of our partners,” Iannelli continues. “One is global activities for distributed solar with the Shams Dubai rooftop scheme already up and running. We obtained an overall umbrella agreement under the UN to register all these projects at once. In the case of Empower, we got the first methodology in the world on district cooling; under the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy, the penetration of district cooling is planned to increase to 40 per cent. A programme of activities under the UN will facilitate the efforts of district cooling companies and entities, not only in Dubai but across the GCC.” Iannelli also highlights Dubai Carbon’s collaboration with Etihad Solar to retrofit schools with distributed solar, designed to showcase how easy and effective it is to install solar rooftops.

SIEMENS’ OPEN DOOR APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY Siemens is using its own business as a live model for positive change with a grassroots approach to decarbonisation.

According to Dietmar Siersdorfer, CEO, Siemens Middle East & Siemens LLC UAE, the company is walking the talk as it moves towards achieving its own ambitious CO2 emissions reduction targets.

“We made a commitment at COP21 and 22 to halve our CO2 emissions by 2020, and to be carbon neutral by 2030. Between 2014-16 we already reached the 20 per cent mark and this started with enhancing the performance of our own buildings,” he said.

The company’s landmark headquarters building at Masdar City and its Munich base are both LEED Platinum certified, and a showcase for Siemens technology and innovation.

Its ‘open door’ approach is also supporting its long-term sustainability commitment, with the ability to demonstrate technology in action a vital educational tool.

Siersdorfer said, “We try to foster and enable change, and by having visitors come through our buildings they can see our technologies in action, which in turn gives them confidence to commit to make changes in their own businesses.”

Siersdorfer remarked, “Though digitalisation we can put a more adaptable power generation model in place, to manage demand more effectively.

“Change in the region is being spearheaded by governments, and with a cost starting to be attached to electricity they are creating awareness that energy has to be used sustainably.”

The company’s proven technology H-Class gas turbines will transform power capacity in Egypt as part of the development of its three combined cycle power plant project. This will see 24 units deliver almost 50 per cent of the country’s generation capacity with the first tranche of units in open cycle operation, and a full operational date of 2018.

ROOFTOP SOLAR TO DRIVE UAE RENEWABLES INDUSTRY Photovoltaic (PV) panel initiatives such as Dubai Electricity & Water’s (DEWA) Shams Dubai programme have potential to drive renewables in the Middle East and South Asia, according to industry leaders attending WFES 2017 and Solar Expo.

The region is already setting the agenda for utility scale projects, with bids for projects in the UAE lowering costs to below US$0.03 p/kWh in 2016.

Shams Dubai’s collaboration with DP World will see the installation of 88,000 solar panels on the port operator’s buildings produce enough energy to power around 3,000 homes. This is one example of how DEWA is encouraging the introduction of PV systems.

Speaking at this week’s solar energy showcase, Sami Khoreibi, CEO, Environmena, said, “Official targets are being set for installing rooftop solar panels, and policies allowing customers to sell electricity back into the network are in place.”

According to Khoreibi, rooftop and other small, localised solar projects allow property owners investing in solar panels to spread the cost of expanding electricity supply, while colocating generation and consumption reduces the burden on distribution infrastructure.

Enviromena has delivered 42 regional solar projects in nine countries, including installations at Yas Marina and Masdar City.

DOW RESHAPES WATER MODEL The shift from a linear ‘take, treat and dispose’ model to a circular ‘reduce, re-use, refresh and renew’ model is imperative if industries are to monetise their approach to water management.

This was the message from Dow Chemical’s regional commercial manager, Zakia Bahjou, to delegates at International Water Summit 2017.

“Unfortunately, water is still undervalued and viewed as a cost centre when it can actually be profit if managed properly,” she said.

According to Bahjou, companies need to invest in available technologies to implement sustainable long-term solutions that can add financial value, as she explained, “Dow has membrane systems that help desalinate or demineralise water so it can be used for other applications. Waste water is also important as the more we treat and recycle onsite, the more sustainable the operation.”

She cited the example of Al Ain Dairy and Park Hyatt, both of which recycle onsite and re-use the water for irrigation, cooling and heating systems.

The least favoured and energy intensive option of desalination also shouldn't be ruled out, especially if re-use isn’t possible, with efficient energy-saving technologies on the market.

Bahjou noted: “All the innovation that Dow has developed for decades has been about reducing energy consumption of our membranes with products like Seamaxx and FILMTEC delivering savings of 20 per cent or more.”

She believes that dialogue between all stakeholders is essential to accelerate the sustainability agenda. “We have to move from talking technologies to talking CAPEX and OPEX savings so that people start looking at water as a profit centre.

On the margins of the 22nd Conference of the Parties climate change conference (COP22), which took place in Marrakech, Morocco, in November 2016, the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit (ICIEC) organised a panel discussion under the theme “ECA Risk Mitigation in Renewable Energy Investments”.

This event offered an opportunity for ICIEC to showcase the benefits in cooperation with its partners to host countries, investors, lenders and contractors involved in renewable energy projects.

“Facilitating the financing of renewable energy projects in our member countries will play an important role in mainstreaming climate investments by developing innovative and

scalable pilot projects, and investing in renewable energy projects,” said Oussama A. Kaissi, chief executive officer of ICIEC. ICIEC boosts the flow of sustainable investments in the member countries by offering foreign investors coverage against the political risks. This coverage is an essential tool of risk mitigation, encouraging equities holders and lenders to participate in the renewable energy projects.

The speakers talked about long-term investments in what are perceived to be volatile, yet profitable markets. They agreed that making long-term commitments was not only based upon financial viability, but also the availability of political risk guarantees to safeguard financial returns.

MENA SOLAR BOAT PROJECT RECEIVES UN ENERGY GRANT A partnership to promote solar-powered electric vessels in Tunisia and in the Middle East and North Africa was awarded the US$1 million 2016 Energy Grant from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA).

The Solar Fuelled Electric Maritime Mobility project by SINTEF, an independent non-profit research institute based in Norway, seeks to demonstrate the feasibility and the social, economic and environmental benefits of solarfuelled electric boat transport in Tunisia and the wider region. It is implementing this demonstration project with the National Agency for Energy Conservation of Tunisia.

"Our vision is 'technology for a better society', and it is essential to develop new and innovative

energy solutions to succeed,” said Alexandra Bech Gjorv, CEO of SINTEF. She added that the project in Tunisia combines many of SINTEF's research areas, such as marine technology, solar energy, power systems and future transport systems.

The grant will help develop technology for a vessel with a plug-in hybrid electric powertrain, and to construct an electric charging point. It will help also support data collection and analysis. The first phase of the project is to select a vessel in Tunisia which will be used for the demonstration.

The project aims to use data to demonstrate the benefits of low cost electric vessels for transport between coastal cities in the region, with a view to encouraging other stakeholders to implement such transport on a larger scale.

GREEN ENERGY FOR LANDLOCKED COUNTRIES Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Her Excellency Dr Mwaba Kasese-Bota, who chairs the United Nations’ Landlocked Developing Countries group (LLDC), addressed a seminar in Vienna, Austria on “Accelerating Sustainable Energy for all in Landlocked Developing Countries through Innovative Partnerships” in November 2016.

Dr Kasese-Bota said the 15-nation LLDC group holds great potential for the production of renewable energy, and called for more investment in the sector.

“The energy access for LLDCs remains very low. The average population access to electricity of 44 per cent lags way behind the average for all developing countries which stands at 81 per cent. We have been undertaking efforts to improve access to clean fuel and energy technologies,” Dr KaseseBota said. “Yet, the share of population in our countries with access to these is only around 25 per cent, less than half of the world average. Our energy efficiency is also much lower than in developing countries as a whole.

Our countries hold great potential for the production of renewable energy, in particular that derived from hydropower, wind, sun and geothermal sources, yet energy investment in our countries continues to be low.”

She said LLDCs had long been dependent on raw material exports, such as minerals and oil, adding that mono-commodity dependence perpetuates high poverty levels.

The Zambian envoy said governments in LLDCs have embraced diversification, which leads to high energy demand.

The Ambassador said there was need for Governments to work with all stakeholders to create an enabling environment that promotes investment in renewable energies to meet the demand and drive the economic agenda towards the 2030 aspirations.

The average costs for electricity produced using solar and wind technologies could fall by between 26 and 59 per cent by 2025 globally, according to a recent report published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The report titled ‘The Power to Change: Solar and Wind Cost Reduction Potential to 2025’, identified that solar and wind technologies can continue to see falls in costs until 2025 and beyond.

By 2025, average electricity costs could decrease 59 per cent for solar photovoltaics (PV), 35 per cent for offshore wind, and 26 per cent for onshore wind compared to 2015, according to the report. Electricity prices for concentrated solar power could also see a drop of as much as 43 per cent, it noted .By 2025, the global average cost of electricity from solar PV and onshore wind has been predicted be roughly US$0.05-0.06 per kilowatt hour.

IRENA director-general Adnan Z. Amin stated, “We have already seen dramatic cost decreases in solar and wind in recent years and this report shows that prices will continue to drop, thanks to different technology and market drivers.

“Given that solar and wind are already the cheapest source of new generation capacity in many markets around the world, this further cost reduction will broaden that trend and strengthen the compelling business case to switch from fossil fuels to renewables,” he added.

KENYA’S RENEWABLE ENERGY DRIVE The British High Commission, together with Barclays Bank of Kenya, recently held a conference in Nairobi bringing together key players in the local renewable energy sector with investors from the United Kingdom.

The UK-Kenya Renewable Energy Conference (REC 100) aimed to promote investment in Kenya’s expanding renewable energy sector, while also addressing the need for affordable electrification in the country.

The Conference welcomed 100 representatives from Kenyan and British firms across various low carbon solutions. ‘QATAR NV 2030 FOCUSED ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ENERGY DIVERSIFICATION’ What are your views on this year’s WFES and what can you tell us about your participation at this year's Summit?

During times of lowered oil prices, and hence controlled spending, do you think the adoption of sustainable solutions is easier, and why?

First of all, it is an honour to participate in this important energy event. This summit is the most influential event dedicated to advancing the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable technology. This year is special as the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), will celebrate its 10-year anniversary.

We consider the WFES as a great opportunity to discover the latest developments in the energy field, explore the latest technologies and exchange views with other stakeholders and relevant parties in the energy sector from the region and around the world.

I believe that economic principles will be the key determinant – it is always wise at times of lower oil prices to stick to the most economic and efficient available options. It is natural for new sources of energy to look less competitive at times of low oil prices. Renewable technologies and sustainable solutions are getting more efficient over time, and thus, one must consider this when setting future plans.

How do you view the Middle East’s position in the global innovation platform for sustainable development?

Middle East countries have worked hard and persevered to achieve development in the global innovation platform for sustainable development, and we can say that what has been seen and achieved, especially in the field of renewable energy in recent years, some of these countries have promising ideas and technologies.

How would you rate Qatar in terms of adoption of future energy technologies and research?

Qatar was the leader in investing in liquefied natural gas (LNG) of what was considered then a new energy technology three decades ago, and today Qatar is the world’s largest LNG exporter with the export of 77mn tonne per annum. Leading the LNG revolution then, today Qatar looks forward to be a leader in future energy sources.

Qatar believes that all sources of energy will be important in the future and from that perspective, Qatar National Vision 2030 is focused on sustainable development and economic diversification. One practical way of achieving this is by diversifying energy sources and increasing the share of renewable sources in energy.

Recently, many renewable initiatives have been announced including the establishment of a renewable energy company – Siraj Energy.

In terms of the research environment focusing on sustainable development technology, we are proud of the efforts invested by Qatar Foundation and Qatar Science & Technology Park and other relevant parties.

One thing that is important for Qatar is efficiency; the diversification of the energy mix and the adoption of new energy technologies must be

There are many ambitious projects in the region that support sustainable development. This is evident in the way that Middle East countries have developed awareness toward the importance of supporting the efforts in renewable energy projects. We are proud that the GCC countries are leading sustainability initiatives. For instance, Masdar in Abu Dhabi is one of the global leaders in renewable energy that we are proud of.

According to the plans announced in recent years and serious efforts exerted by many countries in the Middle East towards sustainable development and economic diversification, we are optimistic about the future of those countries that are determined to achieve sustainable development goals.

With roots stretching back to 1864, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) was founded as a membership organisation in Olso, Norway. Since then, the shipbuilders have endured a number of challenges throughout the centuries and has entered 2017 with a plan for the next decades.

THE PRIVATE SECTOR INVESTMENT POTENTIAL Financing requirements for Africa's power sector are far beyond the scope of most of the continent's countries, but the funding gap can be addressed by bilateral and multilateral donors and small-scale investment.

Among the numerous developmental challenges facing Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is the need for huge investments in power generation capacity, especially in view of strong economic and demographic growth on the continent over the last decade. The financing requirements of the power sector are far beyond the scope of most countries – hence leaving large funding gap, which can only be filled by bilateral and multilateral donors and private investment.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects electricity demand in SSA rising at a compound average annual growth rate of 4.6 per cent and by 2035 will be more than double its current electricity consumption. The World Bank estimated that SSA in last 10 years added only 1-2 GW of new generation capacity each year through 2015, against annual requirement of 8GW. Of capital expenditure, about US$14.4bn/year is needed for new power generation and the remainder for refurbishments and networks. Existing investment by state-owned utilities falls well short of their power needs. Thus, private participation in infrastructure is pivotal.

Independent power projects (IPPs) constitute the primary vehicle for privately developed, constructed, operated, and owned generation plants that sell electricity to public utilities, end-consumers, or wholesale power traders; and as non-utility generators have longterm power purchase agreements (PPAs) with off-takers (including parastatals). IPPs are structured on build own operate (BOO) model, which is popular in ArabianGulf countries.

Since their inception in mid-1990s, IPPs have spread across 18 sub-Saharan countries, all with varying degrees of sector reform and private participation.

Currently, 126 projects greater than five megawatts (MW), totalling US$25.6bn in investments, with an overall installed capacity of 11GW, account for over 13 per cent of subcontinent’s total installed generation capacity. Though comprising a minority of total generation capacity, IPPs provide an important source of new investment in some African countries, thus complementing state-owned utilities. For example, in Togo, Centrale Thermique de Lomé (CTL), the country’s first IPP, boosted installed capacity from 149-249MW; Bujagali hydro project raised Uganda’s installed capacity by about one-third (250MW) when it came online in 2012. Excluding South Africa, total IPP investment that reached ‘financial close’ between 1990 and 2014 stood at US$11bn, based on megawatts installed.

Financing Structures Most IPPs are developed within special purpose vehicles (SPVs) that rely on nonrecourse, project funding. A few are financed off the balance sheets of large corporations. Debt and equity structures differ. There are few international project developers and sponsors, including Aldwych International, Amaya Capital, Globeleq, and Wartsila, as well as private African partners.

Most IPPs are wholly privately owned, though several involve public financing, where state institutions hold some portion of equity and/or debt,

bringing IPPs closer to a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Examples of ‘co-funded’ projects include the Itezhi-Tezhi hydropower plant in Zambia, 50 per cent of which is owned by the state-owned utility, ZESCO and the second wave of IPPs in Nigeria, in which the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) holds a 60 per cent stake.

Ending energy poverty In summary, the power sectors across Africa face two stiff challenges. Firstly, scale up generation capacity, thereby expanding and improving electricity supply - prerequisite for economic development. Second, improve the financial capacity of state-owned utilities so that they are creditworthy purchasers of power from IPPs and can also deliver electricity services on a sustainable basis. In response to these challenges, the World Bank advises: “focus on planning, procurement, and contracting practices for new generation investment must be renewed and, simultaneously, improvements need to be made to the performance of distribution utilities.”

Going forward, many more African countries could and should benefit from IPPs, providing they offer enabling legal-regulatory framework. The overriding priority is fostering the conditions to attract more and better IPPs, thus helping overcome the continent’s power deficit - a hurdle to achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

HITACHI’S ADVANCED BOILING WATER REACTOR

LOCKHEED MARTIN INSTALLS GRIDSTAR IN SYRACUSE FACILITY Lockheed Martin has installed its GridStar lithium energy storage system at the company's Syracuse, New York, facility. The one megawatt system will reduce electricity bills and emissions and provide services to the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), the state's competitive wholesale electricity operator. ENGIE, a global independent power producer and energy services provider which is also exhibiting at the World Future Energy Summit, will operate the system and dispatch the power.

Hitachi, a long-time leader in energy technology, including innovations for safe and efficient nuclear operations, has developed the advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR).

It is the only generation 3+ reactor in operation today and it already has a reputation for enhanced safety performance and cost-efficiency.

Boiling water reactors are among the world’s most common nuclear power generation options and this Hitachi product takes the concept to the next level. This type of reactor is characterised by a system wherein steam generated inside the reactor is directly passed to the turbine to simplify the process, minimising excessive equipment.

This technology was pioneered by General Electric

( known today as GE) in the 1960s and Hitachi has advanced it even further with this product.

At full power, a single ABWR reactor produces around 1350MWe of electricity, which is enough to power more than two million homes.

Since the 1960s, Hitachi has participated in the design, development and construction of more than 20 nuclear power plants within Japan. The ABWR is operational at four sites in the country – two at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa; one at Hamaoka and one at Shika. There are a further four in construction, two at Lungmen in Taiwan, and one at both Shimane and Ohma in Japan.

RENEWABLE AMBITIONS The MENA region continues to pursue promising sustainable energy projects, a major driver being falling technology costs.

2015 marked a turning point for renewables, according to the IEA’s recently issued Medium Term Renewable Market Report. Over the next five years renewables will be the fastest growing source of electricity generation, with their share slated to grow to 28 per cent in 2021 from 23 per cent in 2015, thanks to strong policy support, technology developments and sharp cost reductions. Over this period, costs are expected to drop by a quarter in solar PV and 15 per cent for offshore wind. Further ahead, the IEA forecasts that renewables are set to account for 60 per cent of all new power generation capacity to 2040.

Positive picture Developments in the MENA region reflect this positivity. The GCC countries alone are expected to invest more than US$300 billionn into some 20 renewable energy projects by 2020, according to the Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting.

High levels of solar irradiance, and the falling cost of solar technologies, particularly PV modules, are spurring the development of solar PV in particular.

Other factors driving the growth of renewable energy are the growing demand for power, the drive to diversify the energy mix, and the need to promote local industrial development and create employment, as well as meet emissions targets.

The gradual reduction of subsidies for fossil fuels in the GCC countries is also contributing to an enabling environment. Many countries in the region now have ambitious clean energy action plans and renewable energy targets.

The UAE, which plans to generate 30 per cent of power from clean energy by 2030 and create 70,000 jobs in the renewable energy sector by 2020, continues to play a leading role in the region.

Record low solar tariff levels below three cents per kilowatt hour have been achieved in recent tenders, reflecting the drop in price in solar PV technology and reduced costs for borrowing.

The role of Abu Dhabi’s Masdar in advancing the development of clean energy in the Middle East and internationally, and promoting technology innovation is well-known. Examples of recent innovations include a low-cost solar device that can convert sunlight to steam, developed by the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Not to be outdone, Dubai is progressing a number of initiatives as part of its Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to transform the emirate into a global hub for clean energy and green economy, with the aim of providing 75 per cent of Dubai’s energy through clean sources by 2050. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is progressing the 800MW third phase of its Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park, to be constructed by a Masdar-led consortium on the independent power producer (IPP) model, which will have a capacity of 5,000MW by 2030. And Shams Dubai, DEWA’s initiative to encourage domestic and industrial users to install solar PV panels to generate power, has met with considerable success.

Saudi Arabia plans to generate 9.5 GW/hour of electricity from renewable energy by 2030, and the creation of 7,700 jobs in this sector by 2020, while Oman is now looking at large-scale solar plants on the IPP model.

Pressing need For countries lacking fossil fuels, the need to develop renewable energy resources is particularly compelling. In October 2016, Masdar signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Jordan’s National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) for a

200MW solar plant, which will be the largest solar installation in Jordan once complete. This follows the inauguration of the 117MW Tafila wind farm in December 2015, the first utility–scale wind project in the MENA region.

While Morocco, which imports over 90 per cent of its energy requirements, is targeting the generation of 42 per cent of the energy mix from renewables by 2020 and has a relatively mature regulatory and institutional framework. Noor 1, the first phase of the US$3.9 billion Noor CSP solar power plant at Ouarzazate, commenced operations in early 2016. Once completed in 2018, the complex, which is being developed on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis by a consortium of ACWA Power, the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN), Aries and TSK, will be the largest CSP power plant in the world, with a capacity of over 500MW, producing enough energy to power over one million homes.

Despite these positive developments, the share of renewables in electricity generation in the MENA region lags behind other regions of the world. Further measures to improve regulatory frameworks, strengthen institutional capacity, incentivise private investment, promote R&D and encourage local industry will help MENA to fully capitalise on its renewable energy potential.

PAVILION FOCUS: SWITZERLAND Switzerland is a long-term pioneer in the field of renewable energy and it continues to innovate with technology and economic policy.

Switzerland has a long history of using hydropower as a source of renewable energy - its first hydropower pipeline commenced operations in 1961. Since then, other renewables, such as solar, wood, biomass, wind, geothermal and ambient heat, have also played a growing and important role in the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s energy mix.

The Swiss government developed feed-in tariff at cost to promote the production of energy from renewables. The tariff covers the difference between the production cost and the market price, guaranteeing to renewable energy producers a price that corresponds to production costs. The tariff will be available for hydropower of installed capacity up to 10 megawatts, photovoltaics for installed capacity from 10 kilowatts, wind power, geothermal energy, biomass and biological waste. All electricity consumers contribute to the associated fund via a fee per consumed kilowatt hour.

Since 2014, one-off investments grants have been available. These have been developed by the Confederation for encouraging electricity production using small photovoltaic systems. These grants cover a maximum of 30 per cent of the investment costs. Photovoltaic systems with an output of less than 10 kilowatts are eligible for the one-off grant rather than receiving feed-in remuneration at costs. For operators with systems between 10 kilowatts and less than 30 kilowatts, the choice of either feed-in remuneration or a oneoff grant is on offer.

Swisscleantech Association Set up as the voice of a sustainable and liberal economy for Switzerland, the association pools the strengths of companies that advance clean technology. It advocates the ideal of this technology in resource-efficient, low-emission economies and its relevance to all sectors.

Swisscleantech Association aims to position Switzerland as a cleantech pioneer and contribute to sustainable development internationally. In addition to lobbying, the association offers members services such as a database, events, focus groups and reference projects.

The association has a policy advisory board and a science advisory board. Additionally, there is a parliamentary group which is working to ensure that clean technology gains a strong foothold in the Swiss economy. To this end, the Cleantech Association parliamentary group promotes communication between the political decisionmakers and the cleantech economy. The group holds quarterly meetings during the session, to which speakers from business and science are invited.

The party-grouping Cleantech parliamentary group was launched in 2009. It was chaired by Erika Forster-Vannini, and is now chaired by a co-presiding committee with members from various parties. www.swisscleantech.ch

PAVILION FOCUS: DENMARK AND SOUTH AFRICA These two countries are finding new ways to diversify their respective energy mixes with policies and actions that are all about green innovation.

Denmark Denmark has multiple support schemes in place for renewable energy and other environmentally friendly forms of energy in the form of price supplements, fixed settlement prices, contract for difference, basic amount or plant support. Wind power, biogas, biomass, hydropower and solar installations are all covered by the Danish support schemes.

In November 2016, the Danish Energy Agency announced that Vattenfall Vindkraft offered the lowest price per kilowatt hour for the Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm. With Vattenfall Vindkraft able to provide wind-generated electricity at such an historically low price, 600,000 households are set to benefit as part of Denmark’s target to be fossil fuel-independent by 2050. Additionally, Denmark is developing synergy effects with offshore wind farms.

In regard to solar energy development, submissions for a pilot tender closed in December 2016. Like the wind power tender, the aim is to provide low-cost solar energy. Thirty-six tenders were submitted with nine winners.

Wave power plants, meanwhile, are in their infancy in Denmark but, according to the Danish Energy Agency, the future is promising.

The country is hosting four sea-based demonstration plants, each based on a different concept. This work is focused on the development of technology concepts and conducting sea tests of large scale models.

In its most recent sustainability report the company outlined its plans to contribute to nine of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with a target of 2030 to meet them. These include driving a zero accident culture with a 10 per cent reduction in lost time injuries per year and zero fatalities per year. By 2022, Rockwool aims to reduce CO2 emissions from factories by 10 per cent and then by 20 per cent by 2030. The same reductions have also been set as targets for cutting waste water consumption in factories. www.rockwool.co.uk

South Africa South Africa is part of the growing trend towards renewable energy prevalent across multiple African countries. The African continent has, on average, more than 3,000 sunny hours on a year-based average, making it a very attractive for solar investment. Falling solar equipment costs are expected to boost the number of solar installations in Africa. South Africa has now connected more than half a gigawatt of utility-scale power.

The country is already Africa’s largest producer of renewable energy and is seeking to cut down its dependence on fossil fuels by expanding private sector investments in solar and wind installations, and adding biofuels to the energy mix.

Currently, renewables make up five per cent of South Africa’s installed capacity, from a baseline of zero renewable use in 2010.

As a result of this rapid progress, South Africa is now the continent’s largest wind power producer and is among the top 10 countries worldwide for installed, utility-scale solar capacity.

In 2011, the Renewable Energy Power Producers Programme was launched. Under this scheme, the contribution of independent power producers (IPPs) has reached approximately 7 gigawatts. A

further 1.8 gigawatts of renewable projects are under evaluation. Since 2011, private investments

by IPPs in renewables have exceeded US$12.3 billion. This is expected to expand.

Department of Trade and Industry The DTI has the following vision: "A dynamic industrial, globally competitive South African economy, characterised by inclusive growth and development, decent employment and equity, built on the full potential of all citizens".

The four-part mission of the department is to promote structural transformation, towards a dynamic industrial and globally competitive economy; provide a predictable, competitive, equitable and socially responsible environment, conducive to investment, trade and enterprise development; Broaden participation in the economy to strengthen economic development; and to continually improve the skills and capabilities of the DTI to effectively deliver on its mandate and respond to the needs of South Africa's economic citizens.

Additionally, the DTI has five strategic objectives.

These are to: facilitate transformation of the economy to promote industrial development, investment, competitiveness and employment creation; build mutually beneficial regional and global relations to advance South Africa’s trade, industrial policy and economic development objectives; facilitate broad-based economic participation through targeted interventions to achieve more inclusive growth; create a fair regulatory environment that enables investment, trade and enterprise development in an equitable and socially responsible manner; and promote a professional, ethical, dynamic, competitive and customer-focused working environment that ensures effective and efficient service delivery.

While South Africa is working towards meeting ambitious renewable energy targets, gas, which is the cleanest-burning of the fossil fuels, will be used as a bridging fuel. As such the DTI has introduced a gas-based industrialisation programme to leverage natural gas in the medium term to help drive industrial diversification. www.dti.gov.za

REDEFINING THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE, AUTONOMOUS TRAVEL Colin Rhys, creative director, Hyperloop One Dubai, describes a new form of highspeed transport that could dramatically transform the way people travel.

A hyperloop link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is being explored.

Hyperloop One’s announcement on 8 November 2016 at Burj Khalifa in Dubai was the biggest step yet towards the most dramatic transformation in the way people travel in the 21st century. We revealed that, together, RTA Dubai and Hyperloop One are actively exploring a link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai – taking the hyperloop from a pipe dream to a commercial reality.

That reality will redefine the future of mobility. A system of autonomous vehicles, capable of taking people hundreds of kilometres in a matter of minutes in a living room environment. Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 12 minutes; Dubai to Riyadh in 48 minutes. That reality will redefine the way we live, work and connect.

Hyperloop can be explained as a low-pressure tube through which levitating pods containing both passengers and goods can travel at up to 1,200 km/h – and it has recently gained attention around the world. Benefits include higher standards of safety than a passenger jet, lower build and maintenance costs than high-speed rail, and energy usage, per person, that is similar to a bicycle.

In less than two years, Hyperloop One has raised more than US$160 million, assembled a team of more than 200 world-class experts, built a campus in Downtown Los Angeles, a test and safety site in the Nevada desert, and a 10,000-sq m machine and tooling shop north of Las Vegas. In September, we were honoured to be invited to participate in Dubai Future Accelerators, a unique programme which seeks to change the world by connecting people and making their lives easier.

This programme culminated in Hyperloop One signing a Memorandum of Understanding with RTA Dubai to evaluate the high-level feasibility of a passenger hyperloop connecting Dubai and Abu

Dhabi. In the months following the announcement, we have worked with McKinsey and the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in a 12-week engagement sponsored and paid for by RTA Dubai.

With this landmark agreement, RTA Dubai has become Hyperloop One’s first customer and likely makes the UAE the first location globally for a Hyperloop system, signifying the UAE’s transformation from a technology consumer to a technology creator, whilst simultaneously positioning the country at the forefront of transportation technology and innovation.

As Rob Lloyd, CEO of Hyperloop One, said, “Having signed an agreement with DP World in August to pursue a cargo-based Hyperloop One system at Jebel Ali port, our focus has now expanded to include connecting the Emirates. As the central global transport hub, pursuing the implementation of a Hyperloop in the UAE makes sense. The leaders of the UAE understand that transportation is the new broadband, with the power to transform life throughout the GCC.” He continued, “We are now at a stage where, from a technological point of view, we could have a Hyperloop One system built in the UAE in the next five years. Our agreement with the RTA is the biggest step yet towards achieving this goal.”

Alongside the signing of the RTA Dubai agreement, Hyperloop One has now also introduced, for the first time ever, a vision that represents a complete transformation in the way people travel in the 21st century as the engineers, architects and designers from Hyperloop One and BIG have collaborated intensively for six months to produce a wholly original system design for hyperloop travel.

Going one step further to showcase the Hyperloop One customer experience, we

additionally revealed the first-ever physical route from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, several hyperports (the equivalent of a station or airport) throughout Dubai, and the conceptual interiors and exteriors of the individual passenger pods. The work was based on a detailed study of how an urban and inter-city transport network should integrate with the existing infrastructure. It is autonomous, point-to-point and vastly simplifies the experience of getting from your front door to your destination.

Finally, in the words of our president of Engineering, Josh Giegel, “By making autonomous vehicles an integral part of the development of the Hyperloop One system, we have introduced the idea of seamless, uninterrupted end-to-end mobility. Imagine stepping out of your villa in Dubai, into a self-driving vehicle that resembles your living room, and arriving just 48 minutes later at your office in Riyadh. That is what Hyperloop One can deliver. Collective commuting with individual freedom at near supersonic speed: we are heading for a future where our mental map of the city is completely reconfigured, as our habitual understanding of distance and proximity – time and space – is warped by this new form of travel.”

We, at Hyperloop One, are participating at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week because we are creating a new way to move people and things at airline speeds for the price of a bus ticket. It's on-demand, energy-efficient and safe. This year we will test the full system and aim to be moving cargo by 2020 and passengers by 2021.

We are passionate about producing a new form of high-speed transport that will ultimately be sustainable, redefining transport that can be anywhere, move everything and connect everyone.
