Delivering the welcome address, His Excellency Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and chairman of Masdar, said, “For over 75 years our region has been the leader of the oil and gas industry. Today we are extending our reach to become the centre of gravity for all forms of energy. While oil and gas will remain critical drivers of the global economy for decades to come, we see an even greater opportunity in leveraging the benefits of both new and traditional forms of energy by integrating them into a more creative and productive commercial proposition.

“Today, deploying renewables saves money, liberates hydrocarbons and generates greater value,” Dr Sultan added. “Where solar excels at peak hours, natural gas provides a necessary lowemission, low-cost base load power foundation.

Combining both is a winning partnership, especially in this sun-rich part of the world. The more solar we deploy, the more available hydrocarbons we will have to drive higher value products and help meet global energy demand.”

HE Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, congratulated the organisers of WFES on its 10th anniversary, adding, “We have an acute need to secure safe energy and ecological conditions for the planet.

The 21st century should be the epoch for breakthrough decisions and solutions in energy, and an epoch that will define not only the future direction of the energy industry, but the fate of the planet for 1,000 years to come.”

“The majority of the global community understand the seriousness of the issue,” President Nazarbayev continued. “The proof is the obligations undertaken by countries within the sustainable development goals of the United

Nations by 2030. However, the energy policy of the world is still not fully aligned. I believe that ADSW will help facilitate the implementation of national clean energy targets. Renewable energy sources are today more affordable than they were before. We must take advantage.”

Attracting more than 38,000 attendees representing 175 countries, including more than 80 government ministers, ADSW is the Middle East’s largest gathering focused on addressing the interconnected challenges of energy and water security, climate change and sustainable development. Taking place during the week are the 10th edition of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), the fifth International Water Summit; the fourth EcoWASTE exhibition; the ninth Zayed Future Energy Prize Awards Ceremony, and the second UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science Awards ceremony.

ZAYED FUTURE ENERGY PRIZE WINNERS ANNOUNCED His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, presented the Zayed Future Energy Prize to nine winners during the 2017 awards ceremony at ADSW on 16 January, in the presence of six heads of state.

Established by the UAE leadership in 2008, the Zayed Future Energy Prize represents the vision of sustainability advocated by the nation's founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Now in its ninth cycle, the Prize continues to empower winners that are delivering significant impact across the world.

The 2017 winners are as follows: Li Junfeng Winner Lifetime Achievement Award Li Junfeng, director general of China’s National Center of Climate Change Strategy Research, has been instrumental in advancing the country’s renewable energy policies, spurring record levels of clean energy investment in China, and was one of the chief authors of China’s renewable energy law.

General Electric (GE) Winner Large Corporation category GE won the award for leadership in the wind and solar energy markets. GE’s wind business alone has commissioned 41.3 GW of total generating capacity and installed more than 30,000 wind turbines to date. GE also runs an ‘Ecomagination’

programme to tackle energy efficiency and sustainability in its products and services.

Sonnen, Germany Winner Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) category The Bavaria based smart energy home and commercial energy storage system manufacturer integrates rooftop solar and small-scale wind with home storage batteries and energy management systems.

Practical Action, United Kingdom Winner Non-Profit Organisation category (NPO) A non-profit with over 40 years’ experience, Practical Action works to alleviate poverty in Africa, Latin America and Southern Asia through the deployment of relevant technologies and building local capabilities to manage these systems.

Global High Schools category winners Starehe Girls' Center (Kenya) Winner Africa region Through the school’s planned off-grid PV rooftop system, operational cost savings in electricity and water will enable the school, which educates girls from underprivileged families, to enroll an additional 10 girls in the upcoming school year.

Green School Bali (Indonesia) Winner Asia region The private international school proposes the installation of a 10kW solar PV system and a

battery bank from used mobile phone and notebook batteries with a capacity of 32kWh. This would lower the school’s carbon emissions by 22 tonnes per year, and lower its utilities costs.

Unidad Educativa Sagrado Corazón 4 (Bolivia) – Winner the Americas region Funding from Zayed Future Energy Prize will enable the co-educational school to self-supply its electricity with 100 PV panels of 25kW (at peak demand). Savings on electricity will help strengthen a proposed educational programme on renewable energy.

Belvedere College (Ireland) Winner Europe region The Dublin school’s proposed project is a ‘grow lab’ which produces food in an urban setting using an aquaponics system that is watered with harvested rainwater, powered by an off-grid 6.24kW (peak) PV system, illuminated with highefficiency horticultural-grade LED lighting, and pollinated by bees in on-site hives.

Huonville High School (Australia) Winner Oceania region Funding from the Zayed Future Energy Prize will be used to raise the renewable energy capacity of the Tasmania school to 60 per cent, up from its current levels of 2.5 per cent. The school also plans to develop the Zayed Energy Hub, which will function as a laboratory, run on 100 per cent renewable energy.

FRENCH COMPANIES CLUB TOGETHER FOR CLEAN ENERGY ADVANCEMENT French commitment to clean energy advancement in the Middle East was further enhanced on the opening day of WFES 2017 with the official launch of the French Efficiency – Clean Energy Regional Club for the Middle East.

The initiative, which will promote technology and solutions from both public and private French entities, with the support of the French Renewable Energy Industry Association (Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables), launched with 18 participating companies.

These include Akuo Energy, ENGIE, EDF Energies, Schneider Electric, Total, Veolia and Suez as well as a number of innovation-led SMEs, and is set to expand in the coming months, according to HE Michel Miraillet, Ambassador of France in the United Arab Emirates. “[The club] will be a tool to facilitate the enhancement and interaction with all concerned aspects of the clean energy sector in the Middle East, and will develop active co-operation with the similar French Club for Eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean, set up last May 2016 in Nairobi,” said the ambassador.

technologies and solutions offered by its companies, to foster partnerships and to support the deployment of renewable and clean energies.

The agreement was formally signed by HE Michel Miraillet, Jean Ballandras, National Coordinator for Renewable Energy and Antoine Cahuzac, CEO, EDF Energies Nouvelles & Vice President, Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables (SER) in the presence of Gérard Mestrallet, Chairman, ENGIE; Brigitte Collet, Ambassador for Renewable Energy & Prevention of Climate Risk; and the official French delegation to the IRENA Assembly and ADSW.

DEWA SHOWCASE FOR STUDENT INNOVATION Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is reiterating the importance of engaging next generation innovators to create sustainable energy solutions with the Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) competition a key highlight of its presence at WFES 2017.

SDME, which was launched in 2015 in partnership with the Supreme Council of Energy, DEWA and the US Department of Energy, offers a total prize fund of US$2.72 million and is part of an international competition that invites university students from around the world to design, build and operate solar powered houses.

According to a DEWA spokesperson, participating teams will work not only to develop and build their houses, but also to enhance the systems’ integration and generation of knowledge on sustainable construction with innovation the fundamental requirement at every step.

A total of 22 international teams representing 16

countries and 37 universities have confirmed their participation, including multinational collaborations between the UAE and educational institutes from Italy, Australia, Romania, France and Palestine.

“SDME offers students a unique opportunity for learning, taking theory and putting it into practice, and doing so through a case study. Students working on the project will be challenged to use their innovation capacity, and their ability to design and build an energy self-sufficient solar house,” said the company.

Dubai will host the first round of the regional event in 2018, with the emirate’s hosting of Expo 2020 a platform for round two.

The 10-discipline competition includes contests covering architecture, energy management and efficiency, house functionality, innovation and communication, and a special technology award of US$54,451 will also be awarded for the most innovative idea.

LOCALISATION KEY TO SAUDI RENEWABLES DEVELOPMENT Supply chain localisation will be a prerequisite for companies bidding on phase one of Saudi Arabia’s upcoming renewables programme, according to HE Khaled Al-Falih, Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources.

In a one-on-one session as part of WFES 2017’s Global Action Day, he revealed that the first bid round for an initial 10 GW of capacity will be announced within weeks.

“Within Vision 2030 we’re driving a 15-year plan for energy diversification, so we’re bringing in renewables in a big way,” he said.

Phase one of the Kingdom’s renewables programme will also see a move away from liquids. Utilities, which are primed to reach 100 GW in the near future, will also be 70 per cent gas-fuelled.

The initial phase will be primarily solar and wind, with some geothermal and waste components, and will be developed at a cost of US$30-50 billion with a targeted operational date of 2023.

Al-Falih added: “We are investing in sophisticated technologies to improve efficiency. We are also investing heavily into carbon capture, and will be one of the largest convertors of carbon value.

“Saudi Aramco has acquired a company and technology that will convert CO2 to polyurethanes and SABIC has multiple industrial-scale plants that are converting carbon into CO2.”

He says this will all come together to make Saudi Arabia one of the leaders in sustainability while maintaining its position as a leading global energy provider.

HE Al-Falih also confirmed the country’s civilian nuclear ambition, noting that early feasibility and design studies are being conducted for two 2.8-GW reactors, with site selection and technology development also underway.

DNV GL PUSHES AHEAD RENEWABLES ENERGY GOALS IN THE MIDDLE EAST Bringing a strong sense of belonging to the Middle East and a stronger sense of commitment to sustainable projects – both in solar and wind – DNV GL has contributed immensely to renewable energy research and innovation in the region.

Speaking at WFES 2017, Mohammed Atif, general manager, Energy Advisory Middle East, says, “We collaborate and work with governments and companies in countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia to support energy efficiency projects and initiatives.” He adds that DNV GL is also working with Masdar to recruit young talent from Masdar Institute to support localisation.

An expert on Saudi Arabia’s energy market, Atif also gives his views on Saudi Vision 2030 and how close the Kingdom is to fulfilling its renewables targets. “Saudi Arabia relaunched its vision announcing a 9.5 GW renewable energy programme with a plan to have it fulfilled by 2023, extending up to 2030. There are many companies in the Kingdom that have invested in the technology as well as developers and manufacturers who have been developing their supply lines in anticipation of the renewables programme taking off. At the moment, the large utility scale projects are run by the Saudi Electric Company (SEC) but we do expect this year to see further tenders and opportunities in terms of public private agreements (PPAs). However, it is important for the country to get its first large scale

utility project successful and then expand it on an IPP basis.”

DNV GL is currently the official technical advisor to the SEC’s first utility scale PV project of approximately 100MW in Rafa and Jouf. The company is also highly integrated in the Saudi Arabia government’s efficiency programmes, working alongside SEC, National Water Company and regulators in numerous initiatives to improve planning and promote sustainability.

With regards to WFES 2017, Atif says that he expects the show will increase hope that renewable energy future in the Middle East will change for the better. “What the UAE has clearly shown is leadership and its commitment to investments and collaborations in renewable projects globally. There are the large scale utility programmes that we are seeing across that UAE. Therefore, WFES is a renewed ray of hope for the world to see what potential the region holds.”

When asked if he believes that complete independence from fossil fuels was possible in future, Atif says that from a DNV GL perspective, it is believed that 100 per cent reliance on renewables can be achieved. “The facilitator of that is dispatchable solar PV, which is solar PV technology combined with energy storage. We believe the combination in which the consumption is changing, and on a large scale if made advanced enough, could potentially replace fossil fuel generation plants over time.”

Lastly, Atif reiterates that as much as the governments are working to fulfil renewable energy targets, they should also rework their regulatory framework to include private sector players in order to speed up the delivery as well as understanding new technologies better and faster.

All that said, Atif reveals that DNV GL is also launching its Technology Outlook 2025 report in Arabic at the Summit, which is DNV GL’s vision for future energy system. This is essentially looking at the solar and storage technology to be able to replace fossil fuel power generation and also provide a huge focus on energy efficiency and consumption pattern.

“Why is the Middle East important for that?

Because we believe the Middle East is fundamental for future growth in economic activity in energy consumption and also fundamental for innovations and creativity going forward.”

IWS 2017 PUTS FOCUS ON CLEAN ENERGY DESALINATION The IWS 2017 Market Report, compiled by Frost and Sullivan, revealed that the UAE uses thermal processes for around 88 per cent of its desalination needs, based on figures from Global Water Intelligence.

According to the report, the GCC states are global leaders in desalination, and have proved the value of the technology in underpinning water security worldwide. Historically, the region has used thermal processes using waste heat from electricity generation.

Now, the UAE’s Masdar is leading efforts to link desalination to renewable energy, investing in technologies such as reverse and forward osmosis, which use a high-tech membrane to filter seawater, and integrating this with solar power generation.

The aim is to find the best, most advanced solution, tailored to the region’s environment.

potential to make a significant contribution to the energy goals of the MENA region,” said Mohamed Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar. “This region has led the way in proving desalination as a viable and secure source of fresh water, and we are now at the forefront of researching new solutions which are both sustainable and commercially viable.”

partnership with Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), IWS is dedicated to closing the sustainability gap in the region’s water supply.

Clean energy desalination will be a key topic on the IWS conference agenda, including discussion of progress from Masdar’s Renewable Energy Desalination Pilot Programme. As part of the pilot programme, Masdar has been operating four small-scale desalination plants since 2015, with each plant testing a different desalination process.

“The region is seeing heavy investment in solar energy, and there will be less use of fossil fuels in future expansion of the electricity supply across the region,” said Abdullah Musleh Al Ahbabi, Chairman of ADWEA. “That will make new desalination technology absolutely essential to maintaining future water supplies, and we need to make decisions based on information that is reliable and based on local conditions.”

PWC OIL & GAS REVIEW: TIME FOR AFRICA TO CONSIDER CHANGE

FIRST SOLAR 52.5MW PROJECT IN JORDAN First Solar has commissioned the 52.5MW Shams Ma’an project in Jordan in October 2016. The plant is owned by a consortium of investors consisting of Diamond Generating Europe Ltd., Nebras Power Q.S.C. and the Kawar Group. Shams Ma’an has a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), the country’s power generation and distribution authority.

“First Solar has delivered a highperformance solar energy asset on schedule and with an excellent safety record. There is no doubt that this power plant will deliver on its promises, reliably generating energy over its lifetime and forming the cornerstone of Jordan’s energy security strategy,” said Karim Kawar, chairman of Kawar Energy.

The decline in the global oil price has led to a reduced level of activity across the African continent.

It has also had an impact on countries that traditionally depend on oil and gas revenue. Despite this backdrop, the African continent still offers significant opportunities in the oil and gas sector. “It is an opportune time for local governments that want to attract oil & gas investors to reform their regulatory, fiscal and licensing systems,” says Chris Bredenhann, PwC Africa Oil & Gas Advisory Leader.

Bredenhann says it is also important for the industry to look beyond the challenges caused by depressed prices and consider other forces that are shaping the industry. PwC’s ‘Africa Oil & Gas Review,

2016’ suggests that with the ongoing focus on cost reduction and efficiency in the industry, the demand for innovation in technology will grow.

PwC also argue that this could be the ideal time for decision makers to consider introducing greater training programmes and increase the upskill levels of its employees. This will give local players a chance to enter the sector when activity increases to previous levels.

As at the end of 2015, Africa has a proven natural gas base of 496.7 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), down marginally from 2014, with 90 per cent of the continent’s natural gas production still coming from Nigeria, Libya, Algeria and Egypt.

GEZE LAUNCHES RETROFITTING PROGRAMME IN MIDDLE EAST GEZE Middle East has launched a retrofitting application programme that they termed R3 Programme. This stands for Refurbishment, Remodelling and Replacement. The idea for this programme was conceived in 2014 and since then has been developed with the GEZE Middle East vision and strategy to retrofit automation solutions into existing structures with a process that is noninvasive and hassle free.

GEZE, a global leading player in building technology provides building automation systems for doors and windows that monitor and regulate tasks such as heating, air conditioning, lighting, environmental variables, security and appliances.

When integrated in a building, these solutions can contribute to lower operational costs and a

smaller carbon footprint in the long run.

“From a general perspective, the expected lifetime and service life of building technology is far shorter than that of the building itself.

Engineered systems such as those designed and installed by GEZE need to be serviced from time to time and updated based on ever shifting upgrades made available in the market. In the event that the technology becomes obsolete or cannot be upgraded, the system will need to be completely replaced or overhauled. In addition, safety technology systems will also need to be updated, upgraded or replaced and reintegrated in the event that a new law or new standards has been signed off.” Charles Constantin, managing director of GEZE Middle East said.

The plant, which accounts for approximately one per cent of Jordan’s total energy generation capacity, produces clean electricity using more than 600,000 First Solar Series 4 thin film modules.

This technology is able to deliver up to five per cent more specific energy in Ma’an than conventional crystalline silicon panels. The modules are mounted on single-axis trackers that allow the facility to generate up to 20 per cent more energy.

“Shams Ma’an has been engineered for performance and is further evidence of the fact that First Solar’s high-performance modules can deliver more energy than conventional photovoltaic technologies in Jordan and across the Middle East,” said Ahmed S. Nada, vice-president and region executive for First Solar in the Middle East.

The project takes First Solar’s installed capacity in the Middle East to more than 70MW AC with a further 200MW AC to be added when the second phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is completed in 2017.

FUNDING FOR JORDAN WIND FARM PROJECT

MASDAR FINDS INDIAN YOUTH SOLAR-POSITIVE

The Masdar Gen Z Global Sustainability Survey has found that two-thirds of young Indian adults believe solar power should be the priority future energy source for their country.

Masdar surveyed 5,000 people aged 18 to 25 across 20 countries. The survey was commissioned to mark Masdar’s 10th anniversary in 2017.

As well as being positive about a solar future for India, only 17 per cent of Indian youth surveyed said that coal should be a priority energy source.

This reflects India’s ambitious plans to quadruple its installed renewable energy capacity from 42 gigawatts currently to 175 gigawatts by 2022.

These plans are on the agenda at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

Masdar’s survey findings point to growing awareness among young people across the world of the potential of renewable energy and the importance of public-private partnerships to

facilitate its widespread adoption. Around 92 per cent of those surveyed in India said that businesses and government should share equal responsibility for developing clean energy technologies, second only to the Chinese survey respondents at 95 per cent.

Overall, 91 per cent of survey respondents thought their national government should spend more on renewable energy. For South Korea, the figure was 86 per cent. In Russia, it was at 82 per cent and 58 per cent in Japan.

India will have a significant presence at World Future Energy Summit 2017 with a national pavilion in the exhibition for the first time. At the afternoon session on the conference programme for 18 January, the renewables landscape in India will be examined, with discussions to address the government’s strategic plans, major projects and important technologies.

The Fujeij wind farm project successfully reached financial close on 16 December 2016 as announced by Ashurst when it advised the project lenders, the Export Bank of of Korea (K-EXIM) and the commercial funders, Mizuho Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Europe Limited of this milestone.

The 89.1 megawatt plant, located at Fujeij in Jordan, will now be developed by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) as the sole sponsor.

It will be constructed by Vestas under a turnkey EPC contract, deploying 27 Vestas V126 3.3 megawatt models, IEC S class wind turbine generators, and be maintained under a long-term service and availability agreement with Vestas.

Commercial operation of the plant is slated to commence in October 2018 and the facility’s entire output will be sold to KEPCO under a 20year power purchase agreement.

The funding comprises a K-EXIM direct loan of US$64 million, with a US$52 million K-EXIM covered facility being provided by Mizuho and SMBC. There are also equity bridge facilities totalling US$81 million, which are being funded by the commercial banks. Arab Bank is acting as an onshore account bank and onshore security agent for the project.

Jordan has set a target of renewables to constitute 20 per cent of its energy mix by 2020, largely via solar and wind projects.

IRANIAN UTILITY-SCALE RENEWABLE ENERGY TENDERS IN THE PIPELINE Iran has planned its first tender for utility-scale renewable-energy projects so it can draw US$12bn investment by the time it is complete, reports suggest.

The country will witness five gigawatts of renewable energy in the next five years and an additional 2.5 gigawatts by 2030, Iran’s energy minister Hamid Chitchian told Bloomberg.

“We are not going to use the money from oil in that sector at all,” Chitchian said. “All the investment will be done by the private sector, including local and foreign companies.”

“Foreign direct investment dried up during the sanctions but it is already starting to flow,” said Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh, Iran’s chargé d’affaires in the UK. “Many companies have signed agreements during the last few months. Electricity is considered to be one of the most important sectors,” he added.

Most of Iran’s power plants are more than 40 years old and need to be renovated, he said.

The government is planning to invest US$50 billion in its electricity system in the next seven years.

Iran currently supplies 80 per cent of its power from natural gas and wants to raise that figure to 90 per cent by the end of next year.

‘THE GCC HAS SHOWN REAL COMMITMENT IN ADOPTING FUTURE ENERGY SOLUTIONS’ What can you tell us about your participation at this year’s summit?

We are delighted to participate in the World Future Energy Summit (WFES). I have been attending this conference since its launch 10 years ago, when Masdar City was first announced. With the support and leadership of the government of Abu Dhabi and Masdar, the event has grown and become an important international platform for the industry. It is an event to look forward to and gives Abdul Latif Jameel Energy the opportunity to assess new and emerging technologies in the sector, and meet with government officials, regulators, partners and customers from different markets to identify opportunities for business. WFES is a good platform for us to explain what we are doing in the renewables and water solution space.

How do you rate the GCC in terms of adoption of future energy technologies and research?

The GCC has great potential in renewable energy and countries have shown a real ambition and commitment to adopting future energy solutions.

Masdar and now the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park are good examples of the emirates’ progress and growth. Renewables and sustainability have been put high on the agenda in energy and development strategies across the GCC, such as Vision 2030 in Saudi Arabia, and these are beginning to take off in terms of tenders and construction. This forward thinking is helping drive GCC-based renewable companies to become world leaders. In under five years, Abdul Latif Jameel Energy has become the largest GCC-based and one of the leading solar PV developers in the world through its subsidiary Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV).

Countries may have significant oil and gas resources, but renewables can help them realise the value of their reserves by dedicating more of their natural resources to export rather than consuming them at home.

Can you talk about the sustainability projects that Abdul Latif Jameel is a part of in the region and across the globe?

As an international company, we have projects in

Our home turf is the Middle East where some of our notable projects are currently in Jordan. We are working on two projects that have recently witnessed financial closure, with construction beginning in February 2017 for a total of 130MW. We have signed a power purchase agreement with state-owned NEPCO and are looking at additional projects in Jordan. In the UAE, we are part of the Masdar-led consortium developing the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park 800MW plant in Dubai. There are also significant opportunities coming up in Saudi Arabia as the country plans to generate 9.5 GW of electricity from renewable energy by 2023 and our team is busy working on the initial proposals.

More broadly, the Abdul Latif Jameel World Water and Food Security Lab (J-WAFS) was created in 2014 to coordinate and promote water and food research at MIT. The project aims to develop solutions to alleviate climate change impact, food scarcity and water shortages around the world.

What are your views on water infrastructure development in the GCC and how will Almar Water Solutions tackle related challenges?

The GCC has around 70 per cent of the world’s desalination capacity so the knowledge and experience you find in the region is unparalleled.

Do you think that there is a controlled spending on renewable projects currently?

I do not think so. In the past, such projects in the GCC were funded mostly from oil incomes of the countries. Now the models are changing – renewable energy has become very competitive to the point of not needing any financial support to compete against other forms of power generation.

There is also an increased drive for public private partnerships with a different financial structure. The need for infrastructure remains the same. It is just the funding structure and the competitive nature of renewable energy that have changed.

What are your renewable predictions for 2017?

The renewable energy programme in Saudi Arabia will be a major regional event for the industry in 2017. Also, developments and regulations on battery storage for renewable energy sources will mean they can provide power for a greater portion of the day, making them an increasingly attractive part of the energy mix, particularly as prices continue to fall and technologies improve.

KEPCO NUCLEAR ENERGY SOLUTION

EnergyNest provides ’smart concrete modules’ for renewable energies and energy intensive industries. The technology firm has recently developed a new Thermal Energy Storage (TES) solution. Using technology that has a LEGO-like modular design, allows full scalability and lengthens storage duration as well as offering easy integration and installation and globally available components and materials. It provides flexibility with regards to heat transfer fluid, and high durability with a longevity of 50+ years.

Working alongside its global partners EnergyNest, it will deliver tailored TES solutions for various power and energy applications including Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), Waste Heat to Power (WHP), Power to Heat (P2H), and electric-thermal energy storage for wind energy and other variable renewables.

Tata Steel has various production facilities in IJmuiden/The Netherlands. According to the company, it plans to reduce its carbon footprint within its focus on sustainability. To ensure its energy is used in the most environmentally friendly way, one IJmuiden facility now plans to utilise its exhaust gas energy from production to meet some of the own energy demand of the facility. It also includes the creation of an energy storage for internal batch production.

Established in 1975, Kepco E&C is at the forefront of power plant engineering technology. The firm has developed the A/E (Architect Engineering) and NSSS (Nuclear Steam Supply System) design technology and has launched Korean standard nuclear power plant OPR1000 (Optimized Power Reactor 1000) and APR1400 (Advanced Power Reactor 1400) nuclear power plant. According to the company, it has engineered design technology of 500MW class, 800MW class, and 1000MW class coal-fired thermal power plants to meet the demands for power plants of different sizes and purposes.

Furthermore, by establishing environment-friendly facilities such as desulfurisation and denitrification, Kepco has prevented pollutant emissions to lead the design technology of clean coal-fired thermal power plants.

Furthermore, Kepco, has had to adapt over the years to the fast-paced energy industry. It now has an environment and renewable energy business, transmission & distribution/substation business, and PM/CM business. The company is participating in the engineering of a smart nuclear power plant, which is a small to mid-sized nuclear power plant, to export to Saudi Arabia. It has successfully completed the Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire Power Plant EPC Project in the African region.

Its novel TES allows to select current waste heat and to make it offering an economic benefit. This economic benefit relates mainly to savings in natural gas consumption, and consequently to CO2 emission reduction. THE MIDDLE EAST GEARS UP FOR A GREEN REVOLUTION Interest in renewable energy and clean technologies is set to grow, heralding a green industrial revolution, says an industry white paper. Martin Clark reports.

The demand and use of renewable and energy efficiency technologies across the Middle East is expected to increase, in part because of a struggling oil and gas sector. It is an irony in what remains the world’s greatest oil and gas producing region. A new white paper shows that squeezed budgets from lower oil prices since mid2014, as well as fast rising energy demand in the Gulf, will “significantly” boost usage and demand for cleaner energy sources.

The report, ‘Low Carbon and Politics: the Merging of Two Worlds’, states that renewable and energy efficient technologies are becoming more affordable and accessible, fuelling demand. Simple economics have triggered an “unprecedented step-change in the world’s ethos of low carbon”.

On a grander scale, it claims the growth of renewable energy technologies – from solar, wind, hydro and nuclear – “heralds the birth of the world’s fourth industrial revolution”, and bodes well for climate change targets. The uptake has galvanised the political and industrial appetite required to establish the Paris Agreement.

It is a movement that is, ultimately, being supported by the oil and gas sector. Ten of the world’s biggest oil companies established a US$1 billion fund in November 2016 to ease the climate change impact of oil and gas.

Low carbon futures The white paper – the output from an executive briefing in Abu Dhabi hosted by Lloyds Register – provides insight as to how and why companies are exploring renewable and efficient technologies.

The industry roundtable included a cross-section of stakeholders from national and international oil firms, environmental companies, financial consultancies, academia and research.

Participants debated the challenge that Middle Eastern economies face in establishing a costefficient low carbon future without jeopardising their energy economics or security. Most were of the view that the growth of the low carbon market is not a threat to hydrocarbons, which will remain the dominant source of energy for at least five

decades. Instead, renewables open a pathway for oil producers, and wider industry, to expand the scope of their research and development (R&D) activities to trim costs and enhance efficiency.

“This is a timely issue, considering the International Energy Agency (IEA) recorded a 25 per cent reduction in [oil] field investments in 2015 to US$583 billion and said in September 2016 that oil prices could stay within today’s US$50 a barrel range until mid-2017,” says Lloyd’s Register’s energy director, Alasdair Buchanan.

He argues the unnerving outlook for oil-driven economies in the Gulf, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE, can be offset increasingly by low carbon solutions. At a time when demand for energy in the region is on the up, it could likewise be deemed a blessing in disguise.

The growth of renewables becomes integral to meeting the 48 per cent increase in global energy consumption that has been forecast by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) between 2012 and 2040, with the world’s population expected to swell by 31 per cent from today’s 7.4 billion to 9.7 billion by 2050.

in the historically fragmented narrative of international climate policy. The success is best illustrated by the US and China’s decision in September to formally ratify the agreement – it means the world’s two largest economies that are responsible for 40 per cent of global carbon emissions between them are now on board.

“The environmental incentives underpinning political appetite for renewable energy policies and technologies are stronger than ever,” says Buchanan. In the Middle East, that now needs to be worked into a regional blueprint to move forward with some degree of coordination.

“The Middle East would benefit from an integrated energy policy, which would provide signposts to guide all the stakeholders towards a low carbon future,” he adds. “There is a considerable level of multilateral cooperation and collaboration already happening here – this has created a strong and united movement to see positive change. The adoption of new technologies to help define a low carbon future with widespread and cost effective implementation is the next step in helping the region realise this vision.”

That means governments and financial institutions in the area enhancing existing frameworks that encourage exploratory projects.

energy technologies rely on a well-measured trial and error approach, the white paper shows.

“All energy stakeholders need easy access to funding for R&D, which includes laboratories, testing sites and specialist human resources, as well as the means to share intellectual property (IP) and register patents that reach international standards.

Siloed efforts are unlikely to succeed,” says Buchanan.

According to the white paper, oil companies also see that putting a price on carbon – be it through trading, a tax, or carbon capture and storage (CCS) regulation – is somewhat inevitable.

However, this has the potential to unlock funding for renewable R&D technologies. Currently, only 40 countries and approximately 20 cities, states and regions have put a price on carbon so far, according to 2016 data from the World Bank.

Nuclear energy But it is not just innovative, clean and renewable technologies emerging, with nuclear power set to help meet IEA demand projections. This applies in the Middle East Gulf too.

In 2015, the UAE became the first country in nearly three decades to break ground on its first nuclear energy facility. Construction on the US$24.4 billion Barakah One plant started in 2012 and is scheduled for completion in 2020, when it will deliver up to 25 per cent of the country’s electricity demand and save up to 12 million tonnes of emissions per year.

The nuclear market is rapidly growing, the white paper states, following investor reflection after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan.

The global use of nuclear energy is expected to increase between 23 per cent and 100 per cent by 2030, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s 2016 report. There are currently 473 reactors in operation worldwide, with 67 reactors under construction.

Moreover, innovations that promote the flexibility of nuclear power are emerging. Small reactors that can be mobilised quickly with the option to add modular sections are gaining traction in commercial markets, along with floating nuclear reactors that can be moved to locations to meet heightened demand.

That flexibility may also be relevant to other renewable energy technologies, to provide solutions to different terrains and climates and socio-economic demographics. As the Japan case illustrates, that may include a degree of portability, in part, to relocate facilities in the case of natural disasters or other emergencies.

Energy efficiency The other half of the equation is curbing soaring demand for energy from high-use customers and industry, a crucial step especially in the energyintensive Gulf markets.

Again, in Abu Dhabi, the world’s first commercial steel CCS project has been developed for Emirates Steel by Al Reyadah, which is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Masdar.

The emissions savings generated by the two projects are equivalent to taking 63,000 cars and 170,000 cars, respectively, off the road.

BP anticipates that energy consumption in the Middle East will climb by 60 per cent by 2035, which means the region will stand to benefit immensely from exploring renewable and energy efficiency technologies further.

Innovative uses of existing technologies are being developed in the hope of raising awareness of efficient energy use among consumers, along with subsidy cuts that have started being implemented in the Gulf in the last couple of years.

For example, Dubai’s Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) is using radio frequency identification (RFID) at its retail stations to help motorists manage their fuel budgets.

The shift toward more cost-reflective tariffs in the power sector is another huge leap forward in reining in the Gulf’s insatiable demand for energy.

Although long overdue, and still far off genuine commercial pricing, it nonetheless represents a significant step, not just in terms of economics and energy management, but also politically.

The pressure to raise prices for fuel and electricity in a region so abundant in oil and gas has long posed a unique challenge for the Gulf’s rulers.

Oil industry The implications for the oil industry are, of course, equally immense – though not necessarily negative.

The timetable for the industry to shift towards low carbon operations is tight, but viable, the white paper states. Shell, for instance, has steered its portfolio from a focus on oil-to-gas operations over the last decade to a much broader energy mix.

Likewise, BP illustrated the value of a rigorous emissions reduction scheme when the company announced in 1998 that it would lower emissions from its operations by 10 per cent on 1990 levels by 2010. Savings through energy efficiency meant the oil giant incurred no net costs and met the target in 2001 – nine years early. And there are no shortage of examples, especially in the Gulf, of the shift to renewable energy holding complementary benefits for oil and gas projects in the field.

Economic diversification Long-term, this green shift could herald tremendous opportunity in the development of new industries in the Gulf, an integral part of the region’s ongoing economic diversification strategy to move away from hydrocarbons.

With such a high population growth rate, that also means generating more and more jobs for young people. As a result, companies focusing on research must keep in mind the commercial viability of renewable and energy efficiency technologies. If a product cannot be sold, then it will have no real impact on industry or the government’s low carbon goals and the related R&D funding feed may dry up.

This is particularly important to support the growth of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) sector in the Gulf, which typically have smaller budgets but are a vital portion of a countries’ workforce. SMEs account for up to 94 per cent of businesses in the UAE, for example.

There are already many success stories in the Gulf, such as Abu Dhabi’s Masdar. The company was established in 2006 at a time when the riskreward ratio of low carbon R&D appeared unbalanced, particularly as renewable technologies were not as high on the region’s agenda.

But over the last decade, Masdar has emerged as a hub of knowledge and testing for the Middle East with its projects including fuel efficiency, water conservation, electric cars and a power-generating wind tower that is a modern interpretation of ancient Arab technology. Further down the line, the are implications for the training and education sector too, in preparing the region’s youth to meet the challenge of this “fourth industrial revolution”.

If high quality education and an ability to think outside of the box lie at the heart of successful low carbon R&D, governments and academia in the Middle East must continually bolster students’ learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the white paper states.

“This would nurture the talent of the world’s future thermodynamic specialists, electrical engineers and low carbon economists, for example,” it says. “Such skills, along with an equally vital capacity to think critically and creatively, will create a holistic R&D workforce to spearhead the much-needed innovation that is vital for the next generation.”

EMIRATES INSOLAIRE DELIVERS COLOURED SOLAR GLASS PANELS

UAE-based Emirates Insolaire LLC, a pioneer in the development of new solar technologies and a joint venture of Dubai Investments PJSC and Swiss INSO Holding Inc., has produced first-of-a-kind coloured solar glass panels with its Kromatix patented technology.

Suitable for façades, rooftops and carports, Kromatix patented technology provides coloured solar glass for both photovoltaic and thermal solar panels. It has been developed in close collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology [EPFL] and offers an attractive alternative to the black and dark blue panels, without compromising on performance, efficiency or architectural designs, the company says.

Emirates Insolaire installed the world’s first coloured solar panels on a building façade in

Lausanne, Switzerland. Two other projects in Basel, Switzerland, and Austria have also been completed and the company is receiving enquiries from around the globe.

Rafic Hanbali, managing partner of Emirates Insolaire, said, “There is a strong latent demand for building integrated photovoltaic solar glass, which is far more beautiful than the traditional one, as easy and straight to install, produces energy instead of absorbing it, and has the same cost range, which results in a very rapid return on investment.”

The coloured solar panels from Emirates Insolaire offer high efficiency, with each PV module capable of generating 170 to 190 watts per square metre for roofs or 110 to 130 watts per square metre for façades.

ALEO TO PRODUCE PERC SOLAR CELLS IN GERMANY Aleo Solar GmbH, which is based in Prenzlau, Germany and exhibiting at WFES for the first time, has recently opened a new solar cells plant in Germany. This follows several months of collaborative work between the company’s teams and those of its mother company SinoAmerican Silicon Products Ltd. (SAS).

“This is a great achievement for us,” says the company.

“We will be producing polycrystalline solar cells as well as one of the most efficient solar cells ever produced in Europe, based on the market leading high efficiency Celco technology of SAS, whose mass production efficiency exceeds 21 per cent. This is the first time in Aleo’s history that we will be producing solar cells.”

The plant will produce up to 120,000 solar cells a day when running at full capacity.

While solar cells production is new to Aleo, the company is relying upon the several decades of experience of SAS in this field.

SAS has been a first mover in the Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) area and, with its Celco technology, boasts a leading position in the market, says Aleo.

DEVELOPING THE CONCEPT OF GRAVITY STORAGE Stuttgart-based engineering company Heindl Energy GmbH, an engineering company, is developing the concept of Gravity Storage with the goal of building a pilot project.

The worldwide rapid construction of fluctuating renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar energy, has created an increasing demand for storing large quantities of energy. In order to sustain an uninterrupted supply of energy in a grid system dominated by renewable energy sources, there must be substantially larger storage capabilities than available today to cover long periods of little or no wind, alongside reduced periods of sunshine.

The concept of Gravity Storage (also known as hydraulic rock storage) offers an innovative

solution because it can store large amounts of energy for a long time.

The fundamental idea is based on the hydraulic lifting of a very large rock mass using water pumps. The rock mass acquires potential energy, and can release this energy when the water that is under pressure is discharged back through a turbine.

The decisive variable with such energy storage lies in the storage capacity. At a diameter of 250m, the capacity will reach 8GWh. The Gravity Storage should be operated in regions with a large production of fluctuating renewables.

“With efficiency exceeding 21 per cent, record LID level for p-type cells, improved low light behaviour and up to five bus bars, we will be producing state-of-the-art high efficiency technology that is unprecedented in Germany.

And we are already eyeing the production of 60 cells modules in the range of 310W320W,” adds Aleo.

“These cells will be used to equip Aleo’s solar modules and will also be sold on the open market. Thanks to a European-made production, we will be able to export them into markets that have been applying fees on imports from Asia. So we are looking forward to the new product developments and market expansion the opening of our cell lines enables.”

The main advantage of the PERC structure is that it enables manufacturers to achieve higher efficiencies than with standard solar cells, says Aleo.

Waste is the eternal burden of civilisation. The earliest known urban garbage dumps are found in Crete, made over 5,000 years ago. Not long after that experiments with recycling began: Chinese societies reused bronze and the Aztecs routinely rescued usable materials from their garbage piles.

Even regulation is not new: Athenian Greeks decided over 2,500 years ago that a dump should be located more than a kilometer away from settlements.

Targeting disposal Growing urban populations are placing heavy demands on modern waste disposal. There simply is no space to breathe, even in smaller municipal areas. This is made more acute by growing demand for responsible waste handling, driven by new environmental regulations. Even though such regulations are sound and broadly supported by nations, across Africa, implementation is very hard when it needs to be pinned on a running target: explosive population growth.

According to research conducted by United Nations Economics for Africa in 2012, effective and modern waste management practices are still lacking on the continent. An unrelated 2014 study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information's journal found that nearly no households in Ghana's capital Accra recycled any waste and more than a third of the city's garbage was being disposed of through illegal and unregulated dumping. Services are also lacking, as over 60 per cent of people paying for proper waste removal by private contractors were not happy with what they got.

Yet users of those services are by no means ignorant of the need for urban sanitation, firmly agreeing on the connection between disease and garbage. Instead the major paradigm shift needs to come from policies and systems at national and regional level. It's a picture that can be drawn for many of the continent's nations. Improvements in infrastructure are urgently needed to combat the high cost of health services and thereby alleviate poverty and reduce the pressures of rural-urban migration.

If only the solution was as easy to make as that statement. Waste collection has to operate like clockwork or risk cascading into a series of massive disruptions. For example, the breakdown of a single truck can delay collection by a day, not only leading to upset citizens but a ripple effect across the entire management ecosystem. At the same time waste management outfits are under pressure to cut operational costs, so there may simply not be another truck to deploy.

Yet even if there was an available vehicle, how can operations identify the problem in an actionable time frame, all while managing the disruption over other areas? In some scenarios, such as a worker strike, the delays can become catastrophic, requiring weeks - even months - to recover all the overflow waste and align schedules back to normal.

Scenarios and solutions There are three core problems that affect waste management systems: no end-to-end control, processes and information trapped in silos, and an inability to respond and plan in real-time to scenarios. In recent years a lot of noise has been made around the concept of Smart Cities. Waste management groups cannot be blamed for rolling their eyes when hearing about yet another futuristic 'solution' to a complicated set of challenges. Yet in some cases hype and reality do meet up. By integrating tried-and-tested waste management solutions with an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) culture, the ambition of a real-time, end-to-end approach to reducing garbage is very attainable.

Enterprise application software specialist SAP has partnered with waste management expert PROLOGA to address many of the challenges around this industry: from route planning, real-time equipment oversight, staff management and citizen services to meeting regulatory benchmarks and forward-planning through data collection and predictive analytics. The SAP Waste and Recycling application melds seamlessly with an SAP ERP (enterprise resource planning) system, implemented by experienced partners such as Yash

Technologies. Through this solution managers can control equipment age, track disposal bins, align pickup schedules to refuse levels in bins, plan routes with on-the-ground feedback, comply with environmental laws, facilitate recycling economies and more.

SAP waste management technology solutions have many possibilities that are developing from day to day. Amongst others, they are currently also playing a role in helping manage issues related to infectious disease outbreaks in Africa, such as cholera and Ebola. In another example, the central African nation of Gabon is growing its appeal as a tourism destination by tackling the waste problems of its capital Libreville. The city's inhabitants also quickly cottoned onto the benefits of a cleaner environment, resulting in less littering and proactive beautification of the area.

These are not concepts of tomorrow. Smart technologies are slowly expanding into modern urban environments, fueled by the growth of high speed fibre and mobile networks. Seoul in South Korea is one of several cities trialing smart garbage bins: these will send notifications when they need to be emptied, thus saving unnecessary trips and enabling a proactive approach to waste disposal.

The project projects a 20 per cent reduction in waste removal trips.

Alternatively, waste can simply be shoved into walls, as the Romans did by breaking down pots that imported olive oil from Spain and insulating their homes with the shards. Whatever was left formed massive garbage piles that today are the happy playgrounds of archeologists. Sadly (or perhaps fortunately) the nature and scale of today's waste makes that idea impractical. Besides, who wants today's legacy for the future to be giant rubbish dumps that future Phds trawl in hope of a good grade?

PAVILION FOCUS: KOREA MAJOR INVESTMENT PLANS By 2020, Korea aims to dramatically increase its use of solar and wind power, phasing out the use of coal-fired power plants and creating new jobs.

In May 2016, the Korean government released a plan to invest US$36.6 million in developing renewable energy industries.

This plan includes solar and wind power investments and environmentally power plants by 2020. New renewable power stations have been slated to be built to produce 12 million kilowatts of electricity each year, the equivalent of 26 coal-fired electricity power stations. The government has raised the required ratio of renewable energy generation to five per cent by 2018 and seven per cent by 2020.

It is expected that the new programme will create an estimated 30,000 new energy sector jobs by 2020. As of 2015, 33 per cent of Korea’s total electricity production came from liquefied natural gas plants, followed by coal plants at 28 per cent and nuclear power at 22 per cent. Earlier in 2016, the government announced that the country was looking into closing ageing coal-fired power stations to curb fine dust emissions and reduce air pollution. It is expected that at least 10 Korean coal-fired power plants will be closed by 2025.

A change to the regulations governing the selling of electricity generated by solar power was also revealed by the government. Under new regulations, individuals generating solar energy will be able to sell 100 per cent of the electricity produced where previously it was 50 per cent.

Businesses generating electricity from PV systems will be able to sell the electricity for profit.

Korea has set a target of reducing its carbon emissions by 37 per cent by 2030.

Doosan Heavy Industries The green energy component of Doosan Heavy Industry’s business is significant. The company owns core technologies for power generation, such as boilers, turbines and generators, as well as making substantial inroads into the sector of ecofriendly power generation, including wind power, energy storage systems (ESS) and microgrids.

Additionally, Doosan is involved with technologies that remove harmful substances from exhaust gases, such as post carbon capture and pure

oxygen combustion, and nuclear power plants.

Doosan has been developing technologies that maximise power-generating efficiency, such as superconductor-based generators. Doosan built two units for the Hadong thermal power plant, Korea’s first engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project. www.doosanheavy.com

Hanguk Airro Airro is a predominantly an air compressor company. The company was established in 1987 as Seyang Trading Company and established as the Hanguk Airro corporation in 1994.

PAVILION FOCUS: CHINA MEETING GROWING DEMAND With a growing middle class and multiple industries hungry for energy, China is seeking to meet its needs with a constantly diversifying energy mix.

China, the world’s largest energy user, has become the world’s leading investor in renewable energy. In 2014, US$89.5 billion was ploughed into the clean energy sector, a 32 per cent increase on 2013, and nearly 73 per cent more than the USA, the next biggest investor. 2014 saw China install 19.81 gigawatts worth of wind power infrastructure and 10.6 gigawatts of solar infrastructure. By 2020, China plans to have 100 gigawatts of solar and 200 gigawatts of wind installed. Biomass is also used as an alternative energy source to fossil fuels.

In 2005, the Renewable Energy Law was passed, and was amended in 2009. This provides an umbrella framework for the regulation of renewables in China. The laws are aimed at encouraging energy efficiency and the deployment of renewable energy for domestic use.

While the focus of renewable energy investment in China has been primarily on large-scale utility projects, central government is also keen to stimulate businesses, the major end-users of energy, and has introduced incentive schemes for renewable energy investment. There are also cities and regions in China that are pioneering new purchasing contracts which let companies source clean energy directly from the grid.

The country aims to source 15 per cent of its primary energy from renewable sources by 2020.
