Spring Is In The Air Welcome to our 2011 stallion portfolio.

The 2011 Alabar stallions – quite possibly the greatest field ever assembled – are at the gate and ready.

The addition of Mach Three, Mister Big, Art Official, Courage Under Fire, Major In Art and Safari compliment our existing stallions to form what must be the strongest line up of stallions in the world.

With strength comes responsibility – and this is something we take very seriously.

We have adjusted many of our service fees and all the stallions are now fully in the Alabar discount scheme. Having all these stallions under the one umbrella very much works to the advantage of you the breeder – multiple mare and loyalty discounts are now more accessible, across more stallions, to more broodmare owners.

The Absolute Thrill Of Breeding A Group One Winner THERE’S NO SECRET ABOUT JACK’S DESIRE For Jack (christened John) and Nola Munnerley, the dreams of forty plus years involvement in the horse industry came to fruition on 8th July 2011 when their two home bred fillies Secret Desire and La Machane fought tooth and nail to quinella the $100,000 VicBred Final for Two Year Old Fillies.

It was one of those memorable races when the two combatants raced first and second for the whole trip with just a half head separating them at the end of 2,240 metres.

The Munnerley’s have been breeding their own standardbreds for the past twenty years, but the success of the fillies Secret Desire and La Machane can be traced back to the purchase of a yearling filly by Armbro Aussie from Racist at the 1994 Victorian yearling sales. That filly to be named Forest Glory commenced a very fruitful partnership of the Munnerley’s with the highly successful breeder Kevin Newbound.

Forest Glory won seven of her eight starts before being pulled up amiss in her Three Year Old Fillies Final of the 1996 VicBred.

Then retired to the Munnerley broodmare band (based at Kevin Newbound’s Shepparton property), Forest Glory produced first up a filly by Panorama named Nolarama.

No doubt named after Jack’s wife, Nolarama did her proud with 21 wins and $221,500 in prize money.

Buoyed on by the immense talent of Forest Glory, Jack returned to breeder Kevin Newbound to purchase her full sister in 1998. This filly named Gloriette did not see a racetrack, but her first foal Schonbrunn won 11 races and just shy of $80,000 for the Munnerleys.

2007 AND DECISION TIME FOR GLORIETTE

By September 2007, Gloriette had produced five foals, four fillies including the two winners Schonbrunn and Wheelers Hill (both by sons of Abercrombie).

Over the years Jack, with advice from Kevin Newbound, had developed his own breeding theories which included certain “nicks” and so after watching DVD’s of Real Desire’s racing style and action, this stallion became the choice for Gloriette.

On the 30th September 2008, a filly described by Kevin as truly magnificent arrived at the Shepparton property.

Twenty two days later another filly arrived for the Munnerleys, this time a Bettor’s Delight from the mare Machane. Once again a filly that Kevin described as magnificent. Now Machane’s dam Forest Flame is a Smooth Fella half sister to Gloriette and Forest

Glory and so started that 8th July dream for Jack and Nola, as these two fillies were named Secret Desire and La Machane.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT FOR AMY Once these two fillies grew into yearlings, Jack decided that the Tubbs family would train Secret Desire and Ross and Greg Sugars would take on La Machane.

It was Amy Tubbs that picked up the Real Desire filly. As Amy recalled recently, “I couldn’t wait to get home and show Dad (Alan) this filly. She was so pretty and had perfect conformation”.

Amy then proceeded to break in Secret Desire, which proved no problem whatsoever as Amy described her, “She is so willing to do what you want and just wants to please you”.

La Machane was broken in by Rita Burnett at Kilmore before transferring to the Sugars base at Bacchus Marsh.

When the 2010/11 season came around La Machane was off and running immediately, impressively winning her first start at Shepparton in December.

Secret Desire was a little slower in making her race debut, but not for any problem with her training. “She is so easy to train, really enjoys her work and has such a great disposition” added Amy. Her debut race start came on 1st June at Kilmore, when she was beaten a half neck by a filly driven by Greg Sugars. Her next three runs however all resulted in victories – a heat, semi final and then the final of the VicBred Series.

Although this is not Amy’s first Group One victory as a driver (Melpark Major gave her the honour when winning the 2008 VicBred Final) it will remain a cherished one as it involved the caring and great owners in Jack and Nola Munnerley and of course her darling filly “Gloria”.

A SWEET RESULT FOR JESS TUBBS

The result of that $100,000 final was of course a fantastic result for the Munnerleys, but another person who received such an adrenalin rush and a thrill from the quinellaed result was Jess Tubbs.

Racing Victoria, is the younger sister of Amy and the partner of Greg Sugars, who trained and drove La Machane.

For the Munnerleys, the Tubbs and the Sugars, they will all be hoping for another quinella on August 21st – Breeders Crown Finals day.
