2025 IMPACT REPORT

FROM THE CEO

“ We are constantly monitoring legislative and regulatory actions at the state and local level.”

While 2024 was a challenging year for our industry, 2025 was even more so. Announcements of temporary curtailments of production to permanent shutdowns rippled across the state and region having a significant impact on the entire wood supply chain.

Although there is little that we can do in the short term to influence market conditions, there are things that we can do to promote the use of forest products and improve markets over the long term…in fact, we are already actively engaged in this effort.

For more than 50 years, we have partnered with the Auburn University (AU) College of Architecture, Design and Construction to provide students with instruction and firsthand learning experience in sustainable forestry and forest products manufacturing to encourage them to design and build with wood.

In 2017 we received a USFS Wood Innovation Grant to form the Alabama Wood Innovation team to educate building professionals about mass timber and evaluate barriers to mass timber construction. And for the last 5 years, we have worked with the Alabama Legislature to secure research funding for AU to study mass timber construction and forest-based biomaterials.

We are constantly monitoring legislative and regulatory actions at the state and local level that might affect the use of forest products in construction, intervening where needed. And we continue to work closely with the Alabama Department of Commerce to provide information required by companies considering building or expanding forest

products manufacturing in the state.

In the following pages you will see a snapshot of the programs, activities, and accomplishments of AFA and our affiliated organizations. Some are focused on addressing immediate needs and challenges of our members while others are focused on ensuring that we maintain a favorable operating environment for landowners, loggers, and forest products manufacturers over the long term.

Our advocacy efforts resulted in several big wins: legislation that minimizes the delays from roadside weight enforcement and streamlined the appeals process, saving loggers time and lost production; funding for replacement of rural weightposted bridges, eliminating costly detours and reducing transportation cost; funding for CLT and mass timber research.

During 2025, we continued to promote mass timber construction to increase lumber demand and forestry careers to ensure a reliable long-term supply of workers for forestry and forest products companies.

As we move into 2026, we want to express our sincere gratitude for your generous support and pledge that we will continue to work tirelessly to address those challenges facing Alabama’s forestry community.

OUR STRATEGY

The Alabama Forestry Association, along with the Alabama Forestry Foundation, works with state and national partners on issues that impact forestland ownership and management by conducting the following activities:

• Conduct research and develop forest policy that promotes healthy forests and robust markets.

• Providing forest policy education for legal professionals and elected leaders.

• Monitor judicial and regulatory activity to identify opportunities that strengthen private property rights.

• Take legal action when needed to defend private property rights.

2025 Legislator of the Year SENATOR JACK WILLIAMS

“The Legislator of the Year award is without a doubt one of the most meaningful honors I’ve ever received. As a timber owner, I know how important the timber industry is to our state, the jobs it creates, and the families it supports. In the Senate, I’ve worked to stand up for our foresters and producers who were hit hard by unnecessary regulations that drove up costs. I’ll keep fighting to cut the ridiculous red tape and get government out of the way so Alabama’s timber industry can keep growing strong.” -Senator Jack Williams

Celebrations included mill tours, log site visits, school readings, book donations and other educational events to highlight the industry’s environmental, community and economic impact.

PLANNED EVENTS

“Getting the younger generation in the field is a crucial part in the future of our industry because they are the future. The kids absolutely love coming out to my job during Woods to Goods Week. Their attitudes completely change from the time of arrival to the time they leave. When I see students out in public that have been to a Forestry Field Day in the past, they always ask, “when can I come back”. If we have changed one student's attitude about the industry that makes it all worth it.”

It's about getting to know new people and making stronger connections with the ones you already know. Later, when you see someone at the store, you spend 30 minutes catching up! Relationships are the reason we attend the AFA Annual Meeting.”
