Residente’s last video clip, “This Is not America,” begins with a shot to the air by activist Lolita Lebron. With an excellent film production, Residente charged back to vindicate the wounds, oblivion and injustice suffered throughout Latin America. After the shot by the actress playing the Puertorrican militant, who in 1954 challenged the House of Representatives of the United States to demand the independence of her country, Rene Perez (Residente) reminds the world: “we are here, hey, we are here.”
The popular Puertorrican rapper that became popular as the lead singer of Calle 13, is not in the headlines for announcing his retirement, or his dialectical confrontation with J Balvin. With his impactful “This is not America,” Residente lets out a cry for Latin American unity. The musical bed featuring drum percussion brings a rhythm of suspense with lyrics that strike a sensible cord of Colombians, Brazilians and Venezuelans. A whole continent that has suffered hardship and struggle, with a lot of parallels between its nations.
ANECDOTES FROM HISTORY
Combining his blunt most aggressive rapping style with the great musical richness of Latin America, he says honoring these rythms: “If you don’t understand the note, I’ll give it to you in cumbia, bossa nova, tango or vallenato”. El popular rapero puertoriqueño, que se popularizó durante su anterior etapa como líder de Calle 13, no ocupa titulares por su anuncio de retirada, ni por su reciente combate dialéctico con J Balvin. Con su impactante “This is not América”, Residente lanza un clamor por la unidad latinoamericana. La base musical, basada en la percusión de los tambores, aporta un ritmo de suspense, para unas letras que pretenden tocar las fibras sensibles de colombianos, brasileños o venezolanos. Todo un continente que sufrió penurias y luchas, con evidentes paralelismos entre ellas.

clip, Residente visually references hard episodes in history: Lolita Lebron’s fi ght, the Aztec’s sacrifi ce, Mexican children caged at the U.S. border; the boot polishers’ revolution in Bolivia; the 43 students assassinated and disappeared in Ayotzniapa; Bolsonaro and deforestation of the Amazone together with the disappearance of indigenous tribes …
“America is not only the U.S. man, this goes from Tierra del Fuego to Canada. You got to be so stupid, so dumb. It’s like saying Africa is only Morocco”, cries Residente. It’s a rejection of paramilitaries, guerrillas, gangs, black lists, disappeared people, narco-states or assassinated journalists. Bankruptcy, drugdealing, or undocumented immigrants. The lyrics avoid euphemisms or metaphors: they go straight to the point.
The song’s video clip, in collaboration with Ibeyi, was directed by Greg Ohrel. Hay que ser bien bruto, bien hueco. Es como decir que África es sólo Marruecos”, clama presidente. Es un rechazo a los paramilitares, las guerrillas, las pandillas, las listas negras, los desaparecidos, los narcos gobiernos o los periodistas asesinados. Las quiebras, el tráfi co de drogas, o los inmigrantes sin papeles. Una letra que evita los eufemismos o las metáforas: va directo al grano. El videoclip de la canción, que cuenta con la colaboración de Ibeyi, fue dirigido por Greg Ohrel. En la revista Rolling Stone, donde Residente apareció con el torso desnudo y el título de su último hit pintado en la piel, recuerdan que el rapero apuesta en los días fi nales de su carrera por el arte por encima del negocio.
THE VOICE OF A GENERATION
“He reclaims with force and genius, his throne as the most important rapper in the history of music in Spanish. It is not only the result of the power of his verses, he is also the voice of a generation that has found in his music and activism the support and the inspiration to protest for its rights, ” wrote Diego Ortiz.
After announcing it in his social media, the video was reproduced more than 2 million times in 12 hours. “Starting today, the word America will start to have the meaning it is supposed to have,” exclaimed the rapper. Known for his opposition to the colonization of the continent, imperialism and supremacy of the U.S., the artist, winner of 31 Grammy awards (in his time as a solo singer and with Calle 13), is preparing his farewell album. If he keeps the style in “This Is not America,” it will probably get people talking. z
LA VOZ DE UNA GENERACIÓN
“Reclama, con ímpetu y genialidad, su trono como el MC más importante en la historia de la música en español. Y no es resultado sólo de la contundencia de sus versos, también es la voz de una generación que ha encontrado en su música y su activismo el apoyo y la inspiración para manifestarse por sus derechos”, escribió Diego Ortiz.
Tras difundir el clip en sus redes sociales, logró más de 2 millones de reproducciones en apenas 12 horas. “Desde hoy la palabra América va a empezar a signifi car lo que se supone que signifi que. Vamos a devolverle el nombre a nuestro continente”, exclamó el rapero. Conocido por sus proclamas contra la colonización del continente, el imperialismo y la hegemonía de EE.UU., el artista, ganador de 31 premios Grammy (juntando su etapa en solitario con Calle 13) está preparando su disco de despedida. Si sigue la línea de “This is not América”, probablemente dará mucho que hablar. z
