Introduction From the earliest periods of recorded history until today, translation has played a crucial role in disseminating scientific knowledge. The translation movement has been one of the most important and powerful tools in the exchange of knowledge and in the development of science.

During the medieval period, as a result of the famous Graeco-Arabic translation movement, Arabic emerged as a ‘lingua franca’ of scientific exchange. For most of the medieval and early modern periods, Latin was the ‘lingua franca’ of scientific exchange. Then, we started to see the reverse translation movement from different European languages into Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman.

In order to shed light into this important aspect of the scientific exchange and cultural fusion between East and West; Taking into consideration that during this year we are celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Al-Furqan (1988-2023), an occasion that we are aiming to highlight with particular Projects, Events and Publications; and, In order to highlight this auspicious occasion (i.e. the 35th Anniversary Date of Al-Furqan) with a significant event and important topic which relates to our late Chairman’s (HE Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani’s, may he rest in peace) idea about bridging cultures (especially East and West), one of the aims that Al-Furqan stands for, and, one of the reasons why Al-Furqan was established in London; We are organising this one-day symposium, which aims to shed light into: ‘The First Translation Movement’, i.e., from Greek to Arabic; ‘The Second Translation Movement’, i.e., from Arabic to Latin; and, ‘The Third Translation Movement’, i.e., from Latin / European Languages to Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman.

Prof. Charles Burnett (UK) Charles Burnett (BA, PhD Cambridge), is Professor of Arabic/Islamic Influences in Europe at the Warburg Institute, University of London and Fellow of the British Academy. His research has concentrated on the translations of Arabic texts into Latin in the Middle Ages, in the fields of philosophy, science, religion and magic. This Arabic learning became a major part of the curriculum in the early European Universities. Among his publications are The Introduction of Arabic Learning into England (1997); Arabic into Latin in the Middle Ages: The Translators and their Intellectual and Social Context (2009), Numerals and Arithmetic in the Middle Ages (2010), and The Great Introduction to Astrology by Abū Maʿšar (with Keiji Yamamoto, 2019).

“The Transmission of Learning from East to West through the triple agency of Arabic, Hebrew and Latin”, by Prof. Charles Burnett A large quantity of science and philosophy was transmitted via Arabic to Hebrew and Latin in the Middle Ages. We know the source texts (often Greek works translated into Arabic) and we know the Latin translations, but what is less known are the means by which a text was transmitted from one language to another. Often this involved cooperation: an Arabic teacher and his Latin counterpart, either as a student or an amanuensis; a Jew, as a linguistic mediator between the Arabic and Latin texts; pupils of the translator, who learnt Arabic and often started to translate themselves; hives of translators, either working together on astronomical texts and instruments, or trying out medical recipes, and including scholars of different religions.

Prof. Ahmed Chahlane (Morocco) Ahmed Chahlane is Professor Emeritus at Mohammed V University. He is a Corresponding Member of Majma‘ al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah, Cairo (2018); Member of Scientific Council of the Union of Arab Scientific Language Academies (2018); and Supervisor of the section on “Peace in Religions & Civilisation”, the Encyclopaedia of Peace in Islam, United Arab Emirates. He has Third Cycle Doctorate, Islamic Studies (Grammatical Studies in the Islamic West in the Al-Mohad Period) (linguistics), Sorbonne University, Paris École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE) 1975; and Doctorat d’Etat in Islamic Philosophy, Faculty of Letters and Humanities - Rabat, Mohammed V University, June 1991. He taught at a number of institutions, including: the Faculty of Letters and Humanities – Rabat (Hebrew language, comparative linguistics, history of religions, and Hebrew thought in al-Andalus); Dār al-Ḥadīth alḤasaniyyah (2008 onwards); Mohammed VI Institute for Training of Imams, Rabat (2017). His teaching fields include: comparative religion, ancient history, and scientific research methodologies. He was a Visiting Scholar at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE), Sorbonne, Paris, 2004; and Director of the Coordination Office for Arabisation in the Arab World, affiliated to the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), 19911995; Manager and Editor-in-Chief for al-Lisān al-‘Arabī journal, affiliated to the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), 1991-1995; and General Secretary (and Founder) of the Moroccan Association of Oriental Studies. “Translation of the Rushdian (Averroesian) philosophical text to Hebrew between the Arabic language’s richness, Hebrew’s limitation, and the translator’s weakness”, by Prof. Ahmed Chahlane Jews in the Middle Ages translated most, if not all, of Ibn Rushd’s (Averroes’) works. Ibn Rushd authored works beyond count, most prominent is the Aristotelian corpus on: logic, nature, divinity, and ethics, in addition to ancient Greek medical, astronomical, and political traditions. This aside from his own jurisprudential, and philosophical works. One of his most important personal works is his trilogy: “Faṣl al-maqāl fī mā bayn al-ḥikmah wa al-sharī‘ah min al-itiṣāl”, “al-Kashf ‘an manāhij al-adillah fī ‘aqā’id al-ummah”, and “Tahāfut al-tahāfut”.

These works are considered the quintessence of Averroesian thinking in Arab-Islamic heritage, which brought together the cumulative body of Islamic theology (‘ilm al-kalām), jurisprudence (fiqh), and legal theory (uṣūl), his personal understanding of the Prophetic and Qur’ānic text, and indeed, the medical experience that formed important part of these works.

Therefore, the nature of authorship of these works differs greatly from his abridgements, summaries, and explications of the Greek Aristotelian corpus, in terms of language, concepts, and evidencing. As such, these texts are quite profound Arabic writings, with a creed character peculiar to Islam; i.e. it is of a special language style, treating topics relating to Islam in its complete sense. So how did the Jewish translator deal with these texts in the highly limited Hebrew language? How did he deal with the Islamic texts: Qur’ān, Prophetic tradition (ḥadīth), and heritage, as he prepared these texts for his co-religionists, who do not believe in these texts?

Prof. Dimitri Gutas (US) Dimitri Gutas is Professor Emeritus of Arabic at Yale University. He has published on the mediaeval Graeco-Arabic translation movement and its lexicography (GALex), on the transmission of Greek philosophical texts into Arabic (most recently Aristotle’s Poetics, Brill, 2012), and on philosophy in the Islamic world and particularly Avicenna (Avicenna and the Aristotelian Tradition, 2nd ed., Brill, 2014, most recently reprised in U. Rudolph, ed., Philosophie in der islamischen Welt, Band 2/1, Basel 2021).

“The two translation periods under review: one in late antiquity and early Islam from Greek into Syriac and Arabic, and the second in the 12th to 14th centuries from Arabic into Latin and Hebrew”, by Prof. Dimitri Gutas From late antiquity to the Renaissance, Hellenic science and philosophy, no longer done in Greek, were translated, studied, and advanced in relay by the peoples in the historical West (Bactria to the Atlantic). This process took place during the two translation periods under review: one in late antiquity and early Islam from Greek into Syriac and Arabic, and the second in the 12th to 14th centuries from Arabic into Latin and Hebrew.

What was achieved during these translation periods, rather than who achieved what, is presented and explained in philological and analytical detail through the case study of Aristotle’s Poetics, which was translated and commented upon, in sequence, in Syriac and then in Arabic, and from Arabic into Persian, Latin, and Hebrew. The achievement of the translations was the spread and further development of ideas about the subject in the various linguistic communities in which the translations were made; they enabled thinkers to engage with science and philosophy in these languages, advancing them beyond the stage in which they were received, and to engender a sense of participating in a common endeavour.

Prof. Tofigh Heiderzadeh (US) With a background in physics, Tofigh Heidarzadeh earned his MA in history of science from the University of Istanbul (1997), working on the astronomical work of Ali Qushji, under the supervision of Prof.

Dr. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu. He received his PhD from the University of Oklahoma in 2004. His research was about the theory comets until Laplace (supervised by Prof. Peter Barker). An expanded version of this study was published as A Physical Theory of Comets from Aristotle to Whipple (Springer, 2008). His field of study is the history of physical sciences, especially astronomy and cosmology, cultural exchanges between East and West, and the introduction of modern science and technology to the Islamic world. Before moving to the US, he was the editor and founder of Nojum Magazine, the first monthly journal of astronomy in Iran (and the region). Nojum, which established in 1991, still is in publication and is the oldest privet sector popular science magazine in Iran. Heidarzadeh is an adjunct professor at the University of California, Riverside since 2006. He also teaches physics and astronomy at Riverside Community College since 2012.

“The Two Phases of the Translation Movement in Persia in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries”, by Prof. Tofigh Heiderzadeh The translation movement in Persia / Iran (similar to the Ottoman Empire / Turkey) had two phases: First phase started with scholars originally educated in old schools, using Arabic as the common language to express technical terminology. The second phase developed when the country entered the stage of nation-building and nationalism. This paper analyzes the gradual transformation of the technical terminology in the translation of modern scientific texts to Persian during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The study mainly focuses on physics and geology, and at the beginning, examines the scientific terminology of the “first” Persian books in those fields. Then, the same terminology is compared with texts produced after about half a century.

The first modern geological book in Persian, entitled Tabakat al-Arz, was a translation of the same name book from Turkish, which was initially a French textbook, translated to Arabic, then to Turkish. After transformation through three translations, the only untransformed element of the book was its Arabic scientific terminology, which remained identical in all three translations.

The second book (published in 1858) was a translation of the lecture notes of an Austrian professor of physics in Tehran. It was the first text in Newtonian physics in Persia and the entire technical terminology of this book was also Arabic, mainly originated from Medieval natural philosophy concepts or coined using Arabic stems and terms.

During the Constitution Revolution of Iran (1905-1911) and mainly after the establishment of the Pahlavi Dynasty (1925), a massive effort started to reconstruct Iran’s pre-modern identity. In language, refining Persian from foreign terms was the characteristic feature of the second phase of the translation movement. This article statically analyzes sample terminologies in physics and geology and their transformation during the first and second phases of translation movement in Iran.

Prof. Brahim Ben Mrad (Tunisia) Ibrahim Ben Mrad Ben Ammar, a higher education lecturer at the Faculty of Literature, Arts & Humanities, Manouba University (Tunisia) until September 2017; since February 2019, a distinguished Professor.

He is specialised in linguistic sciences, especially lexicology, terminology, and translation with sub-specialisation in history of the sciences, especially the history of medicine and pharmacy. He has sixteen published books, literary, and scientific, some personally authored, while others are critical editions, the most prominent of which are in the area of scientific research. He is founding member of the Jamʿīyyat alMuʿjamīyyah al-ʿArabīyyah in Tunisia, and its President since 1993; manager of “Majallat al-Mu‘jamiyyah” published by the latter society; he is a member of the Iraqi Science Academy since 1988; member of the Arabic Language Academy in Damascus since August 1993; Member and Vice President of the Board of Trustees of King ‘Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz International Centre for the Arabic Language in Saudi Arabia from January 2010 to December 2013; member and Vice President since January 2013 of the Science Council of the Doha Historical Dictionary of Arabic Language; a corresponding member of the Literature Section of the Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Literature & Arts Bayt al-Ḥikmah in Tunisia since 2019.

“The transfer of Arabic sciences to Europe in the Middle Ages, and the issue of sources”, by Prof. Brahim Ben Mrad From the 11th Century CE onwards, Europe witnessed a vigorous translation movement of Arabic heritage texts into Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. However, this movement has not received its share of objective, in-depth study, in the same way that the first Arabic translation movement was examined. In this paper, we wish to study the issue of the sources adopted by this European movement. We shall focus on two questions; first, the issue of the texts, in that we analyse and discuss the nature of the texts that were translated. Indeed, the texts that were translated are purely Greek texts, such as the works of Hippocrates and Galen in medicine, which were transferred into Latin from their Arabic translations, in addition to purely Arabic texts, such as works by Abū Bakr al-Rāzī, Ibn al-Jazzār, and Ibn Rushd (Averroes). However, who among European scholars since the 19th Century CE considers that the Arabic texts that were translated are themselves based on Greek sources, and as such do not provide anything new to European culture.

This position is oblivious to the fact that in reality Arab and Muslim scholars had sifted through the texts coming to them from Greek thought, scrutinising and criticising these, and adding their own opinions and experiences. The second issue is that of Arab influence on European culture in the Middle ages. We shall analyse three manifestations based on example Latin translations of Arabic texts, namely (1) influence on methodology, whether related to authorship or thinking; (2) influence on content, by espousing Arab ideas in European works, whether in scientific or philosophical texts; (3) influence on terminology, whereby Arabic terms were adopted in European texts in Latin to fill existing lexical gaps, of which we shall present examples of these dictionary ‘loan’ words in Middle Ages Latin extracted from these works.

Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu (Turkey) Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu is a Turkish scholar and diplomat and a pioneer of studies of Ottoman Science and the history of institutions of learning. He was the founder and chair of the first Department of the History of Science in Turkey at the University of Istanbul, the IRCICA, the Turkish Society for the History of Science, and president of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science from 2001 to 2005. Editor and co-author of many volumes, including 18 volumes of History of Ottoman Science Literature, laureate of Alexandre Koyré Medal and also Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science’s prestigious award in the field Arabic and Islamic Scientific Heritage.

“Translation Efforts from European Languages in the Ottoman Era”, by Prof.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu The Ottomans during their six-century history experienced two movements of translation. Ottoman scholars who were well versed in what they used to call Elsine-i Selase, i.e.

Turkish, Arabic, Persian, had an easy excess to scholarly and literary literature in these languages produced through centuries of Islamic history up to their time. Meanwhile, there was an active movement of translation from Arabic and Persian to Turkish since early days (14th -15th centuries). This translation movement was motivated by Turkish Beys who did not know Arabic well; as well as to help beginners in their madrasa educations and some of these translated books were meant to address wide readership.

This early translation movement was accelerated after the conquest of Istanbul in 1453.

Mehmed II was personally interested in scholarship and in patronage for scholars from East and West. In the first instance, Mehmed II attempted to transform Istanbul into the center of science, scholarship and culture in the Islamic world.

Translation movement from Latin and European languages to Arabic and Turkish under discussion must considered within the wide framework of the Ottomans relations with European countries and where the balance of power rests. The close interaction, geographical proximity and active relationship ranging from peaceful coexistence to engaging in warfare made the Ottomans aware of novelties and discoveries developed by Europeans. Naturally they were interested in scientific and technical development as much as they felt the need and were convinced to transfer knowledge and known-how1.

Thus the second movement of translation was versatile.

In this paper, different aspects of this movement will be discussed in analytical way.

Prof. Efthymmios Nicolaidis (Greece) Efthymios Nicolaidis is Emeritus director of research at the Institute of Historical Research, the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Greece. His PhD is on the history of science from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in France. He was President of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology / Division of History of Science and Technology (2013-2017); Permanent secretary of the International Academy of History of Science (2017-2020); and Laureate 2013 of a Chaire Internationale Blaise Pascal, ENS, France. He was Editor of the series ‘Orthodox Christianity and science’, )Brepols publishers(; Co-Editor of Almagest, International Journal for the history of scientific ideas (Brepols publishers); and a member of a number of editorial committees. He was Visiting Professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (2011); Université de Nantes (2012 and 2015); and Ecole doctorale d’astronomie-astrophysique de l’Ile-de-France, (2014-2018). He is author and editor of 19 books, and of 91 articles and book chapters. His main publications are on the history of the relations between science and religion, on the history of science policy, on scientific cultural identity, on the history of astronomy, on the spreading of the classical science (17th-19th c.) and on science in Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire.

“The transmission of Islamic astronomy in the Byzantine Empire: Authorities and texts”, by Prof. Efthymmios Nicolaidis Since the publication of the corpus of Byzantine astronomers by Anne Tihon, some specialists have worked on the reception by the Byzantines of Arabic and later of Persian astronomy. Two periods seem seminal for this reception, the first during the 12th century and the second during the 14th and 15th centuries. But there is some evidence that the first Arabic influences on Byzantine astronomers happened earlier, during the eighth century. During this first period, Byzantine astronomers installed themselves in territories controlled by the Arabs mainly to offer their astrological skills, and some of them returned to Constantinople in order to restore astrology, which was condemned by the Orthodox Church.

During the 12th century, we witness the first translations and adaptations of Arabic astronomical texts written during the previous centuries. Arab terms were then introduced into the Byzantine astronomical language. But the more important encounter between the astronomy of Byzantium and Islam happened during the 14th century, when important Persian astronomical texts were translated and adapted in Constantinople and other parts of the Byzantine Empire. At the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century Persian astronomy and especially the Person astronomical tables were even taught at the school of the patriarchate in Constantinople, together with Ptolemy’s astronomical tables.

In this paper, we will try an overview of the above mentioned Islamic astronomical influences in the Byzantine Empire.

Maryam Patton (US) Maryam Patton is a PhD candidate in the joint History and Middle Eastern Studies program at Harvard University. Her research centres on the early modern period and she is especially interested in crosscultural transmission across the Mediterranean, especially in the fields of book history and the history of science. Her dissertation, which she will be defending soon, examines the historical understanding of time, calendars, and the quotidian experience of time in the Ottoman Empire during the late medieval and early modern period. She received her MPhil in European History in 2016 from the University of Oxford, where she was an Ertegun Scholar. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University, where she studied History.

“Ottoman Chronology, Western Readers: The Italian Translation of Kātip Çelebi’s Taḳ�vīm ül-Tevārīḫ”, by Maryam Patton

Kātip Çelebi is often regarded as one of the first Ottoman scholars to successfully combine both ‘eastern’ and ‘western’ scholarly traditions. The 1697 French translation of his immense bibliographical tome Kashf al-Żunūn by Barthélemy d’Herbelot and Antoine Galland, entitled Bibliothèque Orientale, irreversibly altered Enlightenment attitudes toward not only the Ottomans but Muslim lands more generally. But Kātip Çelebi’s Kashf al-Zunun was not his only work to appear in a European language in 1697. Only weeks prior to the publication of the Bibliothèque Orientale, the notable Italian dragoman Giovanni Rinaldo Carli (d. ca. 1719) published his translation of Kātip Çelebi’s historical almanac Taḳvīm ül-Tevārīḫ, a universal history from the time of Adam to 1648. In his introduction, Carli was explicit that his goals were to divulge Turkish culture and “disenchant” the Western public from the erroneous opinion that “no seed of erudition [was] preserved” among the Turks. But given that Kātip Çelebi’s history was largely a collection of chronological tables, with little of his own analysis of the type found in his other works, it is curious that Carli chose this work to exemplify Turkish learning. In this paper, I hope to posit some theories as to why Carli chose this text by Kātip Çelebi. I explore its value as a source of chronology for European scholars, compare the Italian and Turkish translations, and address their broad appeal as handy reference works for Ottoman history.

Prof. Peter Pormann (UK) Peter E. Pormann, MA (Leiden); DLitt, MA, DPhil, MPhil (Oxon); FRAS; MAE, is Professor of Classics and Graeco-Arabic Studies at the University of Manchester. He focuses on the reception of Greek thought in the medieval and modern Arab world, as well as Greek-Syriac-Arabic translations. “The Role of Syriac in the So-called ‘First Translation Movement’ from Greek into Arabic: the Case of Medicine”, by Prof. Peter Pormann Over the last two centuries, scholars have endeavoured to elucidate the mechanics of how philosophical, medical, scientific and literary texts were rendered from Greek into Arabic. In the course of this research, a vast amount of Arabic translations of Greek texts have been edited and studied; in particular, editors have often compiled Greek-Arabic glossaries, and these are at the heart of one of the two Graeco-Arabic lexicographical projects, the Greek Arabic Lexicon (‘GALex’).

It is also a well-known fact that in general, Syriac translators and Syriac intermediary translations played a massive role in the transmission of knowledge ‘from Alexandria to Baghdad’: most translators in the Kindī circle were Syriac-speaking Christians and presumably used the Syriac translations of Aristotle and other philosophers that were available to them, as they produced their Arabic renderings. Likewise, Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq and his ‘School’ or ‘Workshop’ played a pivotal role in rendering Greek medical texts into Arabic, and they did so largely with the help of Syriac translations, as we know from Ḥunayn’s famous Epistle (Risāla).

In the area of medicine, however, the vast majority of these Syriac renderings have been lost, and this loss prevented scholars to study the role of Syriac in these Graeco-Arabic translations. Yet, recent scholarship has brought three important Syriac sources into scholarly discussions: 1) the Syriac translation of the Hippocratic Aphorisms, originally edited by Pognon; 2) the Syriac translation of Galen’s Simple Drugs by Sergius of Rēš ʿAynā (for which the Syriac Galen Palimpsest is an important source); and Bar Bahlūl’s Lexicon, originally edited by Duval.

The present talk will offer vignettes on the developments in Greek-Syriac-Arabic translation technique, drawing on the most recent scholarship relating to these three texts.
