Úvod Vladimír Papoušek

Těžko lze myslet reprezentaci bez člověka. Reprezentuje vždy, jak nás poučuje W. J. T. Mitchell, někdo­‑něco­‑někomu. Jde tedy zjevně o sociální proces komunikace identifikovatelný v mnoha úrovních – od situace gorilího samce cenícího zuby na vůdce cizí tlupy opičích vetřelců až po komplikované reprezentace v rámci rozvinuté kultury, kde i jednoduché gesto může vstupovat do mnoha odlišných významových komplexů. A tak se palec dolů může vztahovat k zápasu v antické aréně, kde je poražený gladiátor odsuzován k smrti, stejně jako může být gestem burziána, kterému se nepovedl obchod, může být i kritickou ikonou pro označení špatné knihy či filmu v tištěném médiu či znakem negace na internetu. Navíc všechna tato gesta nemusí být vůbec spojena s reálnou skutečností, ale mohou se odehrávat jako součást nějaké fikční konstrukce v divadle, ve filmu či v románu. Jedno gesto tedy „dělá různé věci“ v antické aréně a jiné v divadle či filmu nebo na obraze, který visí v galerii. Člověk ovšem na rozdíl od jiných živočišných druhů je navíc schopen re­‑prezentace, tedy evokace čehosi minulého, co podržel v paměti a chce pomocí řeči, gesta, symbolu, ikony nebo indexu přeložit pro někoho do přítomnosti. Jak uvádí Stanislav Komárek, lze si představit, že letící holub signalizuje druhému „pozor nebezpečí – jestřáb“, ale těžko si lze představit, že první z páru našich holubů bude sdělovat druhému, že ho včera ohrožoval dravec. Zdá se, že tato holubova potíž staví lidskou bytost do jakési výhodnější pozice, ale ono tomu tak zcela není.

Lidský jedinec trpící metafyzickou úzkostí a možná v zoufalství nad množstvím objektů a znaků ve svém světě totiž v průběhu dějin oddělil to, co se původně vázalo ke konkrétní akci, gestu a situaci, od sebe sama a vytvořil strašidelný vesmír objektů a znaků, který jako by žil jen sám sebou. Znak se připínal k objektům světa jako přírodní zákonitost, jako boží imperativ, a tak znaky a objekty nasedaly na sebe jako morfologicky zvláštní monument, jakýsi nezměřitelný „korálový útes“, jenž v každém jednotlivci vyvolává úzkost a bázeň, protože se skládá z nespočitatelných významových struktur, které se navíc permanentně přesouvají a mění. zorovatel tohoto útvaru vidí něco jiného vždy, když jen na okamžik odvrátí zrak. To činí tento útvar ještě děsivějším.

Literatura, film, výtvarné umění, řeč historiků, politiků či ideologů je plna takových struktur, které volně proplouvají mezi skutečností a fikcí, aniž je přes veškerou lidskou snahu možné stanovit pevnou hranici těchto dvou světů. I to vyvolává v člověku zoufalství. Cožpak je možné prostřednictvím co nejpřesnějšího popisu včerejšího dne jednoho jedince tento včerejší den stvořit? Člověk produkuje řeč a gesta, nikoliv skutečnost – řeč všední, řeč obřadu, řeč soudce, učitele, řeč politickou, gesta lásky, nenávisti, vyzývající ke klidu nebo ke vzpouře. Všechny tyto produkované reprezentace se nepřipínají k objektům a situacím vnějšího světa, ale také nikam nemizí.

Permanentně se přesouvají, proměňují v různých situacích, v různých dobách – ve světě reálném, kde odkazují k aktuální skutečnosti přímo či prostřednictvím fikce. Tento permanentní pohyb probíhá v čase a prostoru, mezi realitou a fikcí. Deníkový záznam re­‑prezentuje autorův den, aniž ho je schopen zopakovat, jen ho nově stvoří a tato reprezentace pak v aktu čtení autora či čtení čtenáře čtoucího autora vytváří onen nekonečný pohyb a proměnu – která je ovšem na hony vzdálena původní lidské touze po metafyzickém uchopení a po ustálení a projasnění vztahu mezi znakem a skutečností. Nemáme tedy k dispozici slovníky odhalující objektivitu světa, ale slovníky, které produkují další slovníky. V tomto kontingentním prostředí, kde stará metafyzika zklamala, lze buď rezignovat, anebo přemýšlet o produktivitě nalezeného. Pokud pojem reprezentace či re­‑prezentace nebude pro člověka jen marným nástrojem k popisu objektivního světa ani k zoufalým pokusům po oddělení fiktivního a skutečného, ale naopak nástrojem analýzy lidské řeči, gesta a jejich kulturní a dějinné proměnlivosti, zdá se, že není potřeba rezignovat ani zoufat. Zájem autorů v této knize o zkoumání reprezentace a re­‑prezentace jako především historicky určených aktů lidské činnosti, jako řeči, která má cosi vykonat, se pokouší vzdorovat chaosu a zoufalství návratem k původnímu – k řeči, která není produktem vesmírných sil, ale konkrétního člověka v konkrétní době.

Languages of Representations: Theoretical Approaches and Practical Considerations of the Concept of Representation(s) within the Czech Contemporary Context Petr A. Bílek Like in many other cultural and linguistic contexts, the term “representation(s)” had been, until a few years ago, loaded with a rather vague content, sometimes referring to the Aristotelian idea of mimesis in Czech literary and cultural theory. With the new impulses, produced by New Historicism and cultural history in general, the term has all of a sudden spread around to become one of the most frequented terms recently. Its use, however, has been based on many misreadings and misinterpretations, and the meaning of the term has been biased by individual attitudes towards the theories of fictional worlds, the impulses of (post)analytical philosophy etc. The purpose and aim of this book is to consider both the theoretical and practical possibilities the term would offer within the recent context of the Czech cultural studies with its specific tradition and the status of a “minor” context, borrowing inspiration from varieties of rather diverse sources. The authors were asked to consider specific issues and aspects to produce a volume that would provide a rather complex analysis and to function as a kind of monograph on “representation(s)”. Each essay is thus focusing on specific aspects and, at the same time, distinctive essays should offer mutual references, juxtapositions, and specific dialogical networking.

After the Introduction, the book opens with Petr A. Bílek’s essay ‘Representation: A Metaphor, a Term, a Concept?’ which attempts to answer the question raised in its title. It focuses on the terminological overlapping and shifts (reference, mimesis, representation) and tries to offer a clear and distinctive terminological categorization based on the ways the concept of representation has been coined by W. Iser, S. Hall and the others. It also considers the relationship between the referential and performative aspects that characterizes the concept of representation. Additionally, it 277

analyzes the role of certain elements that claim to refer as if directly to the actual world (especially proper names) and the role of such referring entities in modern fiction.

Vladimír Svatoň in his essay ‘Between an Icon and an Index – Between Mimesis and Performance’ compares the concepts of reference that were produced by the philosophers of the German Enlightenment (mainly Schelling) and the concept of sign coined by C. S. Peirce. He shows that once we put aside terminological differences, both concepts notice a peculiar position of the type of sign labeled as index by Peirce: Via indexical reference, particular entities of a literary text are embedded into the sphere of states of affairs of the actual world. In contrast to the symbols and icons that produce generalized reference to the whole class (they stand for an abstracted type), an indexical mechanism provides, according to Svatoň, large space for performance, that is for incorporation of the context into the resulting work of literature or art. Such a tendency becomes apparent in recent popular and mass culture. It offers, however, more substantial options and impulses also for contemporary high­‑brow literature; such impulses need to be reconsidered and the concept of representation seems to be very productive in this aspect.

Vladimír Papoušek in his ‘Towards the Heavens on High: The Concept of Representation in Harold Bloom’ analyses the structuralization and hierarchization of the idea of the canon as it appears in Bloom’s 1970s influential books. Papoušek focuses on Bloom’s proposition of a super­‑mimesis that the whole arrangement of the literary universe is supposed to produce. He thus finds in Bloom a coherent anthropological concept that has striking similarity to the image of a human body. Papoušek argues that the whole Bloom’s concept considers merely its own rhetoric coherence; whatever does not fit in this concept, happens to be dismissed by Bloom.

The supreme evaluative quality of Bloom’s concept of representation (the sublime) is thus constructed merely through his own discursive practices, paying attention to the persuasive effect and fascinating fashion of his own metaphors and terms.

Tomáš Glanc (‘Resisting Representation: The Poetics of the Presence’) opens his essay with a consideration of the political aspect of representation: Who is supposed/allowed to represent somebody/something? He then focuses on the concepts that refuse and dismiss representation due to its alleged lack of capability to render anything that could be represented.

paradoxically – works liked a stage­‑based act. He explores the term under­ representation, coined recently by Renate Lachmann, and adapts it for his interpretation of the fiction by Danilo Kiš that is based on intensive juxtaposition of the authentic and imaginary/fictitious elements. Glanc concludes that any radical refusal of representation ends up paradoxically as an illustrative prove of the productivity of such a term.

Attacks on the productivity of the concept of representation are the integral part of the (post)analytical philosophy, too. David Skalický (‘Literature and the Mirror of the Nature: On Some Connections between Rorty’s Anti­‑representationalism and Literary Criticism’) specifies the objections raised against representation by Richard Rorty and other thinkers stemming from the umbrella of pragmatism. Skalický explores Rorty’s concept of interpretation that is based on understanding literature as a realm working without any notion of truth. For Rorty, as shown by Skalický, such an absence does not imply a lower, submissive hierarchical position; on the contrary, fiction seems in such a frame to be more socially efficient that philosophy or sciences.

As the realms of literature cannot rely on any universal and metaphysical notions of truth or value standing at the very center of our conceptualization, we still need some positioning that would guarantee at least basic and momentary orientation. Tomáš Kubíček in his essay ‘Space and the Representation of a Value’ analyzes such centers of orientation in narrative fiction.

He finds them as playing roles both to construct the domains of the depicted fictional world (e.g. spatial entities in a story) and to offer the ability to position the whole fictional world via its relationship to the sets of values emerging out if distinctive fictional texts. Kubíček stresses the positive role of a potential system of cultural values as a trajectory that allows us – next to other activities – to distinguish between traditional and newly emerging ways of representations in literature.

The second part of the collective monograph focuses on the concepts and roles of representation(s) in the disciplines of humanities and social sciences that have – fruitfully – shared borderline areas with literary theory and criticism, e.g. philosophy, history, history of arts and culture.

Kamil Činátl approaches representation from the point of a historian.

In his ‘Images of the Past: Representations of the Exile in Czech Cultural Memories’ he focuses on the productive notion of cultural memory constructed via both visual images (paintings, statues) and verbal stories (fiction, memoirs, documents, historical writings). Considering key differ2 79

ences between these two types of cultural memory, he explores the topic of leaving for exile, analyzing especially the variations of the theme of Comenius departing from the Czech lands. He shows that such a topic is not just stored somewhere in the past but that it happens to be revitalized and/or modified whenever the new era finds it productive. Based on it, Činátl sums up that such images of the past produce distinctive effects, which help to construct collective ideology: they separate and exclude to distinguish between members and non­‑members of the collectivity; they offer possessive approached toward what they describe; they produce the legitimate frame of the power; they reduce the potential meanings and hide its parts that are not welcome.

General rules of historical attitudes work for literary history, too.

Veronika Veberová in her ‘Representation of the Literary Modernity Concepts in the Writings of František Götz’ shows how Götz’s texts interpreted as speech acts claim certain ideas but that they attempt to cover up or hide some considerations as well. His literary criticism uses highly figurative language. Analyzing his metaphors for the key notions of his concept (development of art as a living organism; war as a consequence of recent lack of spirituality), Veberová shows how the whole concept aims to construct a highly modeled structure with clear and distinctive borderlines and at the same time his language betrays and deconstructs the whole concept to expose its artificiality, its merely linguistic pattern.

Michal Bauer (‘The Second Congress of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers as Triple Representation’) broadens the focus on constructing the proposed meanings not just verbally but also via the institutional arrangements. He analyses the event of the Writers’ congress in the Stalinist era of the 1950s as a carefully arranged ideological performance. Bauer shows how certain events are mediated as authentic (publication of the most challenging congress speeches) though they are, in fact, ideologically and institutionally controlled and put into a specific context (these speeches are published in abbreviated versions and they are censored).

Petr Komenda focuses on the representation of the creative efforts of the author as they can be perceived from the reconstruction of the act of writing (‘Models of the Act of Writing’). He treats the act of writing as a process, which leaves traces of emotive status and other mental acts as well as of the body activities of the writing self; they can be approached through the analysis of the author’s lexicon. Komenda proposes a philosophically inspired, e.g. phenomenological approach, instead of the traditional psysummary

chological exploration. For such an approach, variants of the manuscripts and other textual versions are valid to allow us to construct some notions about the original authenticity of writing, which becomes later on lost in the final version of the published text.

Stanislav Komárek broadens the perspective as he focuses on the comparison between human and non­‑human living activities. He treats human culture and civilization as spheres that are characterized by more complex production of artifacts that he sums up under the umbrella term of human self­‑designation. Komárek finds the material for such a representation of human activities in a rather broad context, ranking from the cultural landscape all the way to fashion, folklore, and high­‑brow culture.

The third part of the book brings the considerations of practical material and the possibilities of its interpretation into focus. Veronica Ambros develops the concept of visual representation as it has been coined

by W. J. T. Mitchell. She focuses on the notion of mutual mirroring as it appears in the Golem stories and, more broadly, with marionettes and puppets endowed with life to interpret, how such principles work in modern cinematographic and theater adaptations of the Golem story.

The notion of home and domestic belonging is one of the most productive aspects producing the juxtaposition between the representation of the author (autobiographical aspect) and the text as an autonomous entity (home as a mere part of the fictional world). Joanna Czaplińska analyses this topic (‘Ways of Evocation of Home in Prose Fictions of Sylvie Richterová and Josef Škvorecký’). She has chosen texts of two writers with exile experience; their evocations of home are therefore based on radical literary transpositions of the original experience, making such an image of home an explicit verbal re­‑constitution instead of some direct mimetic reference.

Similar notion of the impact of the blurred borderline between the authentic record of the events of the actual world and the fictional world modeled according to its own narrative rules is found in the fiction of Viktor Fischl by Martina Halamová (‘Literary Text as a Representation of the Author’s Ways of Thought’). She notices the issue of the differentiating semantics of the first person and third person narrative modes as they are used in Fischl’s fiction.

While the previous two essays focused primarily on the positive options of autobiographical representations, the essay of Jakub Češka (‘Postponed Representation of Reality and Staged Presentation of the Symbolic Code’) 2 81

focuses on the opposite: to eliminate the biographical reading of certain fiction by Bohumil Hrabal. Češka reads and interprets Hrabal in opposition to Milan Kundera’s novels. He shows very clearly how Hrabal’s novels make use of varieties of literary figures and other devices of writing to eliminate any direct reference to reality and to wipe out even traces of such a reality.

Via the analysis of the trope of metonymy Češka proves how any seemingly direct reference in Hrabal is, in fact, encoded with figurative meanings.

The demand for reading Hrabal’s fiction as “raw”, authentic writing that is directly open to reality is, in Češka’s argumentation, just a mere delusion.

Lukáš Borovička in his ‘The Novel as a Model of Life and World’ approaches the novel Do posledního dechu by Benjamin Klička to offer an interpretation of the author’s world view as it appears while reading the novel. He claims a necessary distinction between the psycho­‑physiological being of the empirical author and between the implied author as the author’s image constructed via the text. He claims that the author’s world view (the model of the world he/she trusts) is to be found in the following textual elements: motives and topics; characteristics of protagonists; space and time of the novel and its individual perspective of its rendering; composition; choice of linguistic means; ways of depiction.

Jan Čulík focuses on ‘Cultural Patterns in International Comparison and in the Czech Films’. He treats the cultural patterns as specific organizing grids of cultural artifacts that are able to produce and project collectively shared conventional perception of the actual world. Then Čulík proceeds to the interpretation of recent Czech films from the point of cultural patterns they construct or confirm. He finds that these patterns are rather hybrid and they are mainly formulaic, based on stereotypes they just reproduce and share.

Josef Švéda focuses on the similarities and differences of the Communist and post­‑Communist narrative versions of the controversial “real life” story of the Mašín brothers. In his essay ‘The Mašín Brothers as Heroes of Socialist and Capitalist Realism’ he shows how the Communist era film and literature constructed their story to maintain as many anti­‑heroic features as possible while the post­‑Communist era merely mechanically converts the narrative features to make them as heroic as possible. He proves how most of these post­‑Communist narratives exploit the features of the genre of romance that is the strict tendency to construct the axiological axis dividing the historical protagonists into the either­‑or opposition of the “good guys” and the “bad guys”. summary

Vít Schmarc (‘Invasion of Dancing Body Snatchers’) focuses on the catastrophic films of the Hollywood mainstream production, which he compares with the Czech Stalinist era film Zítra se bude tančit všude. Schmarc explores the similarities between the concepts of obedient citizens as they are formed by Hollywood production and by the Czech Stalinist film. He focuses on the idea of a “stolen” body, which is deprived of any individuality and converted into an item of a perfect social machine.

Jaroslav Pinkas (‘The Metamorphoses of the Pop Culture Reflection of the Normalization Era in Czech Post­‑Communist Film’) shows how the most popular Czech films of the last two decades represent the era of “Normalization” (e.g. 1970s and 1980s) not from an internalized perspective but as a “natural disaster” that has no agent to feel any guilt. He pays attention to the contextual retro tendencies and to the concept of specific Ostalgia, which unifies all these representations into one universal formula.

Ediční poznámka Kolektivní monografie Jazyky reprezentace představuje soubor textů, který společné téma – problematiku reprezentace – zkoumá z různých úhlů pohledu. [II] Mapa Palestiny Matthewa Parise z poloviny 13. století zřetelně ukazuje potřebu tří bodů, které jsou pro navigaci důležité. Jedním z nich je loď a dva další musí být mimo ni. Charakteristické je rozlišení věží, které nemá nic společného s ornamentem, ale s nutností bezpečného určení objektu, a je tedy funkční. Budovy, popřípadě hory zakreslené v druhém sledu, opět slouží jako orientační body. S jejich pomocí se konstituují tři vrcholy trojúhelníku, které jsou mj. důležité proto, aby výsadek na pevninu neskončil uprostřed nepřátel. Obecné rozšíření této kartografické techniky dosvědčuje i následující mapa Kréty z roku 1525, jejímž autorem je Piri Reis.
