The summer-long soap opera continues as UA makes change after change They say that change is a good thing. But when something changes, it could be for the better, for the worse or just plain different.

Over the last few months we have seen a lot of changes at The University of Akron. First they added “Ohio’s Polytechnic University” to their name. Like a professional woman newly married, this hyphenated name doesn’t quite roll off of the tongue. Instead it is lodged in the throats of the many students, faculty and alumni that struggle to associate with the label of “polytechnic.” Perhaps over time this modification to the name will seem the norm, but for now it is still foreign.

At the end of July the university enacted a wide array of cuts across the board. Like many in The 330, we watched the rapidly changing scene at the university with interest and a fair amount of heartache. Sometimes it was hard to see the reasoning behind the cuts. Seeking clarity, akronlife spoke with UA’s current CFO, Nathan Mortimer.

Mortimer has been very closely involved in many of the changes at UA over the past few months. “The reality is that we’ve acknowledged that we have a challenge and we’re in the process of fixing that challenge. The unfortunate circumstance behind it is that we needed to reduce our recurring cost. We did that in part through the position abolishments we did in late July.” The university cut 213 positions of which 161 were filled.

Unlike a recent graduate with a student loan to pay back, the university does not have a $60 million bill to pay back. Instead that large number is where their current financial model is out of equilibrium. Think of a seesaw that has the weight unequally distributed. One

end of the plank is high in the air while the other is wedged into the soft ground. The abolishment of the 213 positions is part of the plan to steady that plank. However, was it too much too quickly? Instead of seeing slow and steady reductions of weight, a large portion was suddenly removed from the overburdened side of the plank. The largest kid on the playground hopped off, leaving their skinny companion hanging on for dear life. A bumpy and violent ride, the seesaw will eventually calm down and return to an neutral state.

Along the way though, it is easy to get painfully dislodged, massaging a sore backside as you walk away.

According to Mortimer, this bumpy ride will not last forever. “I would say we’re on a two and a half year to three year plan to get back on what we think is the equilibrium of financial stability,” he says.

The positions that were abolished in order to reach this equilibrium were not randomly pulled from a hat. “The positions themselves were part of many conversations, various levels of enterprise that were really involved with not just myself and the president, but the vice presidents who were directly responsible for those functional areas,” says Mortimer. If you think of the university as a sports league, each vice president is similar to the coach of an individual team. The coaches report to the head of the league, trimming the portions of their team where the larger organization deems necessary. With each cut, the coaches (or vice presidents) determine which parts of their team will stay and which will go — attempting to balance operating expenses with operating revenues.

One of the most visible places cuts can be seen is E.J. Thomas Hall. The performing arts venue has long been a staple of the university. Its stage has hosted lecturers, orchestras, dancers and musicals. When you do a basic Google search for the performing arts hall, the description that appears in the sidebar is “University of Akron-based venue for Broadway revivals, plays & varied musical performances.” Unfortunately, after all preexisting contracts are fulfilled for the Broadway Series this season, the shows are not scheduled to return.

E.J. is one of the places where the university sees a need to balance the cost to operate with

the return of those expenses. “What I’m trying to do at E.J. Thomas within a few months is to honor everything that we’re contractually obligated to honor. [Then] I’ll be able to look at E.J. Thomas and see what the infrastructure needs to look like in order for us to move down a path that’s really economical and financially sustainable,” says Mortimer.

Throughout this season, Mortimer says the university needs to carefully observe the infrastructure, which previously was simply unaffordable. “I’m looking at what it costs us to put on a show. Historically we haven’t tracked that. What is our cost of production? What’s our cost of delivery of these shows? As I do that and we look at what we need to put the infrastructure together, those help us make our decisions.”

The hope is that by streamlining and improving everything behind the scenes at E.J., the shows will continue to go on. “My hope is that I can create a seamless environment and enhance the [experience] for people coming to E.J.,” says Mortimer.

When reading through the list of positions abolished at the end of July, E.J. Thomas Hall comes up time and time again. Some employees, such as the box office workers, were dismissed that day. However, like others in various departments at UA, some will continue to work through the remainder of the calendar year. Many questions have come up concerning how these cuts will impact the performances already scheduled for this year. “We took our first major step toward that when we delivered on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ [which] was a flawless performance by production staff and by the performers,” says Mortimer.

With a reduced staff from what it has utilized during past performances, there was a concern by many that the shows would suffer. There are a lot of working parts to a show at E.J. From the person who takes your tickets and ushers you to your seat to the soundboard operator, there is a lot going on behind the scenes. Mortimer says that the quality of the show was not lessened and that supplemental staff has been brought in for past shows.

“Whether you look at E.J. today or three weeks ago, we’ve always brought ushers in.

We’ve always brought in people to help with concessions; that’s normal.” (continued on page 35)

Sterling Jewelers expands photos by Micah Beree

Beer serves a helping hand Ohio’s economy has been positively influenced by beer. The beverage has brought quite a lot of money into the state.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, beer has provided 41,700 jobs to Ohio, $4.6 billion through brewing, distributing, and retailing and $1.7 billion in federal, state and local taxes. Beer plays such a significant role that Ohio ranks fifth in influence in the beer industry, behind California (being the biggest), Texas, New York and Florida.

A two-story addition, potentially housing 200 more employees, will be added to Sterling Jewelers’ headquarters in Akron. The proposal for expansion is estimated to cost $18 million. Only after the proposal is approved will a construction date be released. The new area would be used for a new lobby space, processing and distributing, additional offices, and meeting areas.

I am a creature of habit. I suppose we all are, but my tendency to cling to repetitive action is, as far as I can tell, slightly more pronounced than the average Joe's. At times in my life, this character trait has been diagnosed as a "disorder."

Clinically, I mean.

Some of my habits are destructive, while others are benign and purposeless. A few, however, I consider positive actions, and it's in this latter category that I place a dogmatic insistence on bringing a book to any event or gathering wherein I predict even a slight chance to knock out a chapter or two. And so I found myself, a few weeks ago, seated on a jumbo-sized cooler, hunched over a rapidly deconstructing copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night. It was a hot and humid farmers market, where our family farm sells limited sundries to friends and neighbors, and chunks of chapters, prose certified as "classic," kept dropping from the spine without warning. And I mean this as a literal description—a significant section of Book Two fell to the asphalt with a dull thud.

This bookish habit of mine has found me reading in public quite a bit. Anyone who's ever poured over words in full view of the throng of humanity will recognize the throng of humanity's inevitable curiosity about the bound pages between a reader's hands. This market morning was no different, as a wide range of people, from customers to tourists to fellow vendors, repeated the familiar refrain: "What are you reading?" My response in this situation is usually to flash 10

the book's cover at the curious, and 9 times out of 10, the response is as predictable as the initial query: "I love to read, but I hardly ever have time. I'm just so busy."

(At least two of these people hold terminal degrees in literature.)

What is this busyness? Or, more to the point, why do we all feel it crushing us like a Death september 2015

Star trash compactor? Is it, as we've long been told, good to be too busy to think?

I'm not the only one asking these questions, of course. Termed by some as the "Cult of Busyness," social scientists voice concern over society's hero worship of people who do too damn much. Juggling harried sports, school, work and home schedules earns titles like "Super Mom" and "Ultra Dad." Develop a

nervous tick, sacrifice sleep, lose all ability to focus on an immobile object for longer than five seconds: You're doing great! The ultimate goal, it seems, is to completely forget that people ever experienced joy over anything other than a crowded to-do list.

On its face, the idea seems simple enough: Work more, make more money. Do more, make more happiness. Rest less. But mounting evidence suggests modern notions of productivity may be flawed. In a study titled "Time Use and Productivity: The Wage Returns to Sleep," economists Matthew Gibson and Jeffrey Shrader looked at two cities that, while in the same time zone, experienced exactly an hour's difference in daylight—a geographical trait that results in an hour's sleep difference between the populations. They studied the cities' earnings data and found that the well-rested population earned 4.5 percent more than the city that stayed awake longer.

Why do we do this to ourselves? I've been different kinds of busy in my life—I've worked 80-hour weeks getting a business off the ground, and I've worked traditional schedules and filled the off-hours with all manner of unnecessary schedule complications. When times were closer to "normal," I found myself courting stress, busying myself with anxiety the moment I woke up. I'd open my eyes to a new day, feeling my brain reassemble itself, and start seeking instability, grabbing onto whatever point of panic I held hours earlier as I gracelessly dropped beneath the waves of consciousness, exhausted by a day of pawing at the details like a string of invisible worry beads.

STRENGTH STYLE SCRATCH-RESISTANCE

If Gamut were a self-help column, this is where I'd tell you to look for unnecessary busyness in your life, points of pointless stress, and cut them from your schedule. I'd tell you to make yourself do one stress-reducing activity every day, whether that be an hour of yoga or jogging or quiet time with tea and a book.

I'd tell you to take care of yourself, that you're worth more than all those accumulated checkmarks on your schedule.

But Gamut's not a self-help column, it's just a page or so of barely structured chit-chat, so instead I'll tell you a story. Recently, I've felt stressed. Some busyness in our lives is unavoidable—we make our livelihood through animal husbandry, an inherently chaotic occupation—but we also participate in a number of child-centric activities, just like cityfolk.

One recurring item on the kid calendar has caused my wife and I anxiety for many months, and after hours of discussion, we decided to nix it. Upon composing the email excusing our family from further participation, my wife walked into the room (where I sat writing this article) and nervously read me her composition, but when it came time to hit "send," her finger quivered over the mouse immobile. Her whole body seemed to lurch when she finally mustered the will to press the button. Then she sighed with relief, and we both went about our day feeling a little bit lighter. / Rodney Wilson is either a pig farmer who writes or a writer who farms pigs. Either way, he’s got a freezer full of bacon and a finished manuscript, and he’s trying to sell both.

So schedule in an extra hour's sleep and do more in the truncated waking hours. Easy enough, right? Well, no—the quality of those open-eyed, hyperproductive hours matters too, especially to your health. The American Psychological Association's "Stress in America" report found that roughly a quarter of Americans realize they're overstressed to an unhealthy degree but say they're too busy to engage in stress-reducing activities. The study cited stress as a significant danger to physical, emotional and psychological well-being, a familiar claim my neuroscientist friend recently confirmed, saying stress is "dangerous as hell."

Real-world reenactors / The boys in grey and blue battle to keep history alive /

The Civil War may feel like an event from the history books that is dead and gone. For Chris Smith and his fellow reenactors however, that piece of history comes back to life on the battlefield.

Smith has been participating in reenactments, like the one at Hale Farm and Village, for about 26 years. A member of the Union Army, he has moved through the ranks from a private to the man in charge of troops from Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

When not battling on the field of honor, Smith is one of the owners and the president of Lost Tribe Media in Akron.

How did you get started doing Civil War reenactments?

CS: Growing up, my dad was a big history buff and I learned that from him. We didn’t go to places like Disney or Kennywood, when I was growing up our vacations were at the Civil War battlefields. That was in my blood.

Are your travel plans still based around battlefields?

CS: I kind of continued that. I proposed to my wife on the summit of the Little Round Top of Gettysburg. And we still go to historic sites for vacations. However, we are starting to break away from that at the insistence of my wife. We’re going to North Carolina this year, we’ve gone to Florida, so we’re kind of breaking away from that trend.

You proposed to your wife at a historic site? Does she enjoy history too?

CS: Yes. I actually have quite a collection of vintage history books from the late 1880s and on our first date we were over at my 12

Tennessee. They were not wealthy people at all and that was who the Confederate soldier was. As for myself, even though that’s where my family came from — my ancestor was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg —I’m an Ohioan. I wanted to represent the soldiers that came from where I live. People are focused on history not politics when it comes to reenacting.

What is your current role in the Union?

Is there any element of reenactments that really sparks your interest?

CS: I love the equipment part of Civil War history — the firearms, the uniforms and everything always intrigued me. Also, the presentation of what the average soldier was like. We see all of this stuff in school and in movies about the generals, the leadership and the politics, but really any kind of moment in history is about real people and the Civil War was no different.

You’re in the Union infantry right?

CS: Everybody comes into this thing and starts off as a private. They’re what we call today a “grunt,” and carrying a rifle and fighting in the line. And then after a period of time, depending on your individual leadership skills and the time that you want to dedicate to this, you kind of get moved up through the ranks.

How do you move up through the ranks?

CS: In the Civil War reenacting world, each individual company is an individual organization and then those organizations come together to make a larger formation. Each unit will have elections and elect each person to be the captain of the unit and a lot of times if you do a decent job you get reelected over and over again.

Was there ever any debate about what side to fight for?

CS: It’s one of those things where my family were farmers in Tennessee and they were soldiers in the Confederate Army. They fought because the Union Army was invading

So it may be a make-believe world, but just like any organization there is this administrative, organizational, real-world side of things that has to be done and that’s what my role is now.

Apart from helping with event organization, what do you do when not on the field?

CS: We get to talk to the public and educate them not only on the war, but also about the men that served in the ranks during the war.

That’s what living history is really about—to not only honor those people, but to educate people on what their life was like.

CS: My current role [is] the acting Chief of Staff for the national organization. It’s more of an administrative role than leading the men in the fields. It may be reenacting, but you still have to organize people and it’s a lot of people. There is a lot of stuff that comes with that as far as getting the information out about the events, making sure that the people who are on the staff have the tools that they need to do their jobs and be able to set up camps, and organize the troops.

Do you have any funny stories?

CS: I could probably fill a book of funny stories. We were in Georgia at the anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga and the Union Army was camped all up and down a mountainside. A farmer came over the hill and said “just so you guys know, we’ve had a mountain lion roaming around this area.” So at about two in the morning, while 600 to 700 reenactors were sleeping, the company captain and I heard this “grrrrrr.” Both of our eyes popped open. Of course we have rifles, but there’s not a single live bullet in any of these things and absolutely no way to defend ourselves if this lion decided that he wanted to have a feast.

Cultural Fun in Downtown Akron / The Akron Artwalk brings awareness to local artists and galleries /

During the first Saturday of every month, the cultural scene of downtown Akron comes alive as local artists and galleries open their doors for the massive art showing during the Akron Artwalk.

The Artwalk was created by Sandy Holata, owner of Akron Glass Works, who felt that there was a void in downtown Akron, and the Artwalk was just what was needed to fill it.

“My husband and I are both artists and when we travel we notice little art districts, art walks, gallery hops around in different cities,” she says. “At the time we had an exhibition in downtown Akron and Akron Glass Works was about to open with an open house for the public, so we decided to approach local studios, galleries and artists and say ‘hey let’s get together and create an artwalk.’”

It can be difficult to get people to come down for one exhibition, Holata says, but if it was more of a destination for patrons, perhaps there could be a possibility of better attendance. So far, she has been right. Since the first Akron Artwalk on October 13, 2006, the number of participating artists and galleries has continued to grow, mirroring the crowds coming out to enjoy the event.

Patrons can walk, drive or take the trolley to the Northside District and explore artistry at its finest with Zeber-Martell Clay Studio and Art Gallery and Akron Glass Works among other exhibits that rotate each month. On North High Street, artlovers visit the High Street Galley, We Gallery, todd v studio and more galleries.

The walk doesn’t stop there though, attendees can head to the Summit Artspace and explore a display room including Crafty Mart, Rubber City Prints, the Akron Society of Artists and more while enjoying complementary snacks and refreshments.

Not only is the Artwalk a great time for patrons, but it’s a wonderful opportunity for the artists as well. One of the veterans of downtown, Zeber-Martell Clay Studio and Art Gallery has been around for 27 years.

Co-owner Michael Martell says that the Artwalk is a great way to engage the community and promote awareness of what’s going on in the art scene. “We look forward to the Artwalk as an opportunity to showcase new and different work,” he says. “We have an open space upstairs where, on occasion, we have special performances and

special exhibits that we open on the Artwalk. It’s been very beneficial. It certainly builds awareness for a downtown business.”

Maize Valley’s fall festival takes the season to new heights The Maize Valley Hot Air Balloon Lift-Off begins the fall harvest activities at Maize Valley Winery. The event started over 15 years ago, when two of Maize Valley Winery’s owners, Bill Bakan and his wife, Michelle, were looking for something new to lure more people to their fall events and new farm market.

“The Balloons are an added bonus included in our price of admission. Visitors can come and experience the corn maze, watch the pumpkin cannon, catch a pig race, play on the farm, get something to eat, enjoy a glass of Maize Valley Wine or Craft Beer and then get to watch the balloons lift off, weather permitting,” says Bill Bakan. “Though we open weeks earlier, most people are not ready to pick a pumpkin till a bit of a nip is in the air and fall is upon us.”

Wait, did you just say, “pig races?” While you’re there, make sure you check out Maize Valley’s popular NASHOG races. According to Bakan, it’s the only “fast food” you’ll find at Maize Valley.

“We offer the finest in flat track pig racing you can find and our NASHOG race track reflects the history and nature of the sport,” Bakan says. “The participants are old-school, everyday blue-collar hogs, not fancy ‘thoroughbred’ racing pigs. Think Clyde and Semore meets Jethro meets NASCAR.” Once the hogs’ racing days are over though, Bakan says he struggles with what to do with retired racers as they put on a few

The event focused on research as the National Multiple Sclerosis Society strives to stop the disease, restore what’s been lost and end multiple sclerosis forever. A special Fund-a-Need held during the dinner raised $11,200 for multiple sclerosis research. Total proceeds topped $104,000 to support MS-related research, programs and services to improve the quality of life for people affected by multiple sclerosis.

The Society is investing close to $8.5 million in the Ohio Buckeye Chapter area to support 23 research projects at Athersys, Inc., Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, Kent State University and The Ohio State University.

While the cogs of the machine are being fine-tuned across the vast machinery of the university, there is still the question of the many people without—or soon to be without—jobs. Mortimer describes the university as a fluid, living entity. Constantly in a state of flux, positions are added and subtracted as the needs become clear. Just as that seesaw teeters up and down, UA too adds to its positions as it cuts them. “Because of that, we’ll be rehiring and replacing positions in the future,” he says. “The positions [that were] abolished no longer exist.” He continued to explain that as future positions open up, they will first be made available internally.

While these changes have been difficult for many of us to watch, we have to wonder how it will all play out. Will the main emotion still be anger in 10 years time? Or will we have readjusted our opinions through the lense of time and calmly look at the big picture? Those are not questions that can be answered right now. Unfortunately, the main thing we see right now is the loss of people’s jobs. “We’re certainly navigating through difficult things.

In the short-term we’re taking a lot of hits, but in the mid-term and long-term it may not be so bad,” says Mortimer.

In a few years time a lot can change. A baby can become a child, with unique looks and a personality to match. When we turn our gaze away for a span of time and then look again, those changes are much more visible. It will be interesting to see how the university looks in a few years time. Will those who used to frequent its halls recognize it? Only time will tell.

For the art exhibit “A Year in Plein Air,” it certainly does. Artist Michelle Darvis dealt with everything from paint dripping off of her canvas in the heat of the summer to below freezing temperatures in the winter. A graduate of Kent State University, Darvis, painted one 8X10 painting every single day for a year to complete her “Year in Plein Air” body of work. “It’s an old idea to do something daily, so I was really thinking ‘wow, what if I did this [and] how far would it get me?’”

It’s gotten her pretty far. In a single year, Darvis painted 365 scenes of the great outdoors in The 330. A native of the region, she says that Ohio is the perfect place to find inspiration. “I love our area. I was born and raised in Northeast Ohio, have never moved out of this area and I love everything about [it].”

Darvis painstakingly painted every single day — even on her wedding day and thirty minutes after getting a root canal. “The first couple of months some people thought I was crazy, but after a while everyone got on board and encouraged me.”

For most of the year, the scenes were randomly selected to keep the collection as natural as possible, painting different locations in all four seasons. “There were always ideas of what to paint, but I never made a schedule. I wanted it to be more organic.”

And what could be more organic than the great outdoors?

When viewing “A Year in Plein Air,” it’s not hard to tell what season the scene is capturing. Beginning in January, viewers relive the bitterly cold days of 2013, with mounds of snow and barren trees. In true Ohio fashion, the snow melts away and comes right back again. It was during the continuous snow storms that Darvis found that imperfections or mistakes, oddly enough, make for perfect art.

The turpentine used in Darvis’ oil paint isn’t meant to get wet. When in contact with water, the paint can clump, creating undesired textures in the paint. Nature fought against her as she painted, however she found beauty in the chaos. “I’ve painted in a blizzard and you can’t even stop the snow from hitting it,” she says.

“Sometimes it would create this beautiful effect because it melts and you see this texture in the paint. I discovered that was really beautiful.” w w w. akronlife.com

As the seasons changed, the paintings showcased the beauty of the Greater Akron Area, though they never showed the effort behind the scenes. “There’s so much prep work that goes into paintings,” she says. “A lot of people will think this painting only took you so many hours, but they don’t know how much prep has gone into it. You have to go out and buy your paper towels and all your soap and all your tools. And then you have to wash your brushes, and prepare your pallet. It’s definitely a process.”

Darvis says that her paintings could take as little as twenty minutes to create, or as long as five hours. Her paintings recreate 38

images from her backyard of flowers, downtown Kent, architecture, railroad tracks, beautiful lakes, blue skies and more of the beautiful nature that The 330 features.

Just by looking at “A Year in Plein Air,” one can tell that this colorful collection was created by an artist dedicated to saying thank you to the area that inspired her the most. With vibrant blues, twinkling yellow lights and an ombre sky, Darvis illustrates a Vineyard at peace in one painting. In another joyful purple, magenta, pink, blue and yellow hues bring the beauty and brilliance of a group of flowers to life — these same flowers used

in Darvis’ own wedding. Whether the sun was shining on lush green hills or ice dominated the landscape, her paintbrush brought out the beauty in the scene. Even the winter looks less intimidating on paper as Darvis utilized a multitude of shades to reflect the color that bounces off the frigid surface.

“Bridal Showers,” is one painting in the collection that truly exudes a wonderful and cheerful feeling. In a way, it personifies a blushing bride on her wedding day — much like Darvis on her own big day. On that big day in her life, Darvis took time away from the bustle and excitement to paint. Although the flowers

and the sun aren’t as transparent as some of her other works, you are immersed in the scene all the same. With this painting, Darvis shows her appreciation of color with the display of blues, purples and greens, as well as a strip of yellow sunlight.

Viewing this painting makes the mind think of hot summer days and lemonade, a refreshing and exciting feeling.

Not limited solely to nature, Darvis recreated scenes of the Kent Water Tower, downtown Peninsula, Taco Tantos in Kent and more local businesses easy for the local eye to recognize.

Darvis’ works of art were all sparked by emotions, memories and a sense of nostalgia. Each location reminded her of important moments in her life. “The second to last day I painted my parents driveway. At the end of the driveway, my dad [had] built a bench [where my parents would] wait with me at the bus stop,” says Darvis.

On her very last day of “A Year in Plein Air,” Darvis and her husband trekked to Lake Erie, where her late grandmother lived and where her grandfather took photographs of the sunset over the lake.

“It was kind of like saying goodbye to

the collection. The whole year I was so stressed about what was going to be the last painting. I wondered ‘should I go to the White House? Should I paint the Grand Canyon?’ trying to come up with something really dramatic. I realized that the most meaningful thing that I could possibly paint was my grandmother’s backyard.”Upon completion, “A Year in Plein Air” has traveled far and wide.

The collection has been exhibited in California, Arizona and of course at home in Northeast, Ohio. Darvis is sponsored by top art supply companies, featured in many fine art magazines, including PleinAir Magazine, and selling her art on

“Social media is the new gallery,” she says. “You don’t really need to have your art in a gallery if you can have a proper website and social media. I love Instagram because it’s all visual. When I was doing ‘A Year in Plein Air,’ I would post a picture of me painting the scene. Then I would post the final picture and I tried to do that every single day.”

When at home, “A Year in Plein Air” can be seen at the Hudson Fine Art Framing Company. Darvis will continue to travel, showcasing and sharing her collection. “I definitely want to show these paintings to as many people as possible. I am still in the works for a couple of big locations,” she says.

Darvis says that “A Year in Plein Air” is just the beginning for her and she will continue to do pieces like this one in the future.

“I call myself a multimedia concept artist because I don’t just work in oil or water color, I like to work in everything,” she says. “I like to work on big concepts like ‘A Year in Plein Air.’ This was one big work of art so that it’s not just oil painting, it’s almost modern art — the whole piece is finished when I paint that final piece.

Behind the movement The University of Akron becomes the home of 2nd National Choreography Center

Everyday we move. We move forward, backwards, up and down. This movement is automatic. There is no need to sit and plan the steps we will take as each minute ticks by on the clock. However when the colorful lights come up and costumed limbs begin to move about a stage, every motion has months of planning behind it.

This is choreography.

Described simply, choreography is a series of pre-determined steps set for a performance. Alone these steps mean little. Together though, they make an impression on viewers that strikes straight through to the soul. Dance makers have been impacting the lives of many through staged works for centuries. These pieces of art take three vital elements however: time, space and bodies. Unfortunately these things are extremely difficult to find in the major cities that attract dancers — even harder to find within an artist’s frugal budget.

Art needs time to develop, however time is something that most choreographers cannot afford. The opportunity to slow down and simply create is not an option.

“For so many, especially in big cities like New York, Chicago and L.A., studio space is at a premium and it’s expensive,” says Neil Sapienza, Associate Dean of Fine Arts and Humanities and the Director of the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration at The University of Akron. “Choreographers are exploring new work and they’re not quite sure what they need, so just the luxury of time and space in a studio is where it starts. [The center provides] the luxury of time and space — just to explore, fail, try again — without the fear of ‘I’ve got to put something on stage in three weeks.’”

Earlier this summer, Akron drew the attention of dance makers nationwide when it was announced that the Rubber City would be the home of the second national choreography center.

Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC), which is housed in the Florida State University School of Dance, the newest choreography center will live in The University of Akron’s Dance Department. Despite being housed at UA, the center will operate as a separate 501C3 non-profit organization. “This is a center that will be housed at The University of Akron, but we really look at it as a national center that will tap into the rich dance resources of Northeast Ohio,” says Sapienza.

Space In the dance world, space is a precious commodity. Pam Young, the Executive Director of DANCECleveland says that it’s one thing that has been harder and harder to come by in recent history. “We started seeing a trend—as long as 15 years ago—where dance companies were really struggling to get work made. Dancers usually take space that no one else wants and turn it into dance space. Well, a lot of that space was in places like warehouses and those were becoming apartments,” says Young. Now trendy living space, warehouses are no longer an option as affordable space to create movement in.

When hunting for real estate, dancers have a few specific features on their wish list. The space must have tall ceilings for jumps and lifts. It must be fairly large, allowing dancers to leap, run and twirl through the space. When finished, a studio also features mirrors, a sprung wood floor and an excellent sound system. Finding all of these things in one package can be a real challenge in metropolitan cities like New York or Chicago, however Northeast Ohio happens to be rich in this particular resource. “There’s a lot of underutilized space that a dance maker could have access to for three, four or five days to work on [a piece],” says Young.

be the only option when it comes to space to play in. The University of Akron boasts several theaters on campus, including Daum Theatre, Sandefur Theatre and E.J. Thomas Hall. Participants in the residencies will also be able to use space at theaters in Cleveland like Playhouse Square, or even in Youngstown, expanding the footprint of possibility throughout the entire area.

Carrie Hanson, the artistic director of a Chicago-based dance company called The Seldoms, utilized a non-traditional dance space during the first pilot residency earlier this summer on campus. “[Carrie] wanted to be more in the black box theater, working with lighting and working with production elements,” says Young. “The black box gives them a space to test ideas and that’s what they [did during their residency].” A black box theater is a space with no windows.

This allows the team to experiment with lighting without contamination from outside light sources.

In the experimental stage, Hanson and her team were creating movements around a large curtain that stretched from floor to ceiling, filling the space with a malleable, but massive set piece. “We used this [residency] in a very technical

way. Otherwise it becomes very risky to try and bring in a large set piece like this,” says Hanson. “I can imagine a lot of things and we can theorize about how it’s going to work, but unless you actually have it up in the air and the production people are figuring [everything out], it can become theoretical and not really work once you get it into performance week.”

Young points to this ability to experiment with new ideas and concepts as a key component of the new center. “Really the center is matchmaking what a dance maker might need or want with what resources we have here,” says Young.

Time Art cannot always be created on a deadline. And even if all of the piece and parts come together on schedule, there is usually little remaining time to perfect the piece. This is the second element of the center: the time to create without pressure.

For The Seldoms, this was their first residency. “These opportunities are pretty rare — to go into a theater without the pressure of a performance and to be able to just experiment and figure a lot of things out,” says Hanson. Working with a large curtain of bras, stitched together

At the university alone there are seven high-tech dance studios that could serve dance makers from all over the country.

For Young and Sapienza, this singled out Northeast Ohio as a great place to bring a choreography center. “We look at Northeast Ohio as sort of a playground for choreographers. Part of the success of a residency will be the upfront work with the choreographer, really finding out what it is that Northeast Ohio can offer them to help in their research and if it is a dance studio and a few dancers, great,” says Sapienza.

Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the May 4th Memorial at Kent State to provide background information on the counterculture theme they were working with.

Cara Sabin has been a dancer with The Seldoms for 10 years. While in Northeast Ohio during this residency, Sabin says that it was beneficial for them to get out of Chicago and explore what this area has to offer. “It’s been really great that we can develop work rather than just going to perform work,” says Sabin. “I feel like we’ve gotten to work in a way that we haven’t before – with some collaborators, with the structure. [The residency] pushed us to make things we wouldn’t typically make in our home studio.”

Building the foundation to create triangular patterns, Hanson envisioned a set piece that could be integrated into the choreography. “We had to figure out a logic of interacting with it and how to both maximize the use of it, but not use it so much that it becomes gimmicky,” says Hanson.

Whether it was running to the hardware store for weights or just taking a break to sit down and look at the curtain, what The Seldoms needed more than anything was time to work. Having this time was actually a struggle for the company at first according to Young. “Because this was their first residency, they thought they were going to come in and [do] this and this and this. At some point, I think we said ‘there’s no pressure on you to try and do all of those things’.” With her encouragement, they slowed down and fully utilized the gift of time they had been given. “It took them a while to get to that [realization] — that it was okay to sit there and think. Nobody was expecting them to be moving all the time and then they found the value of space and time.

They couldn’t get over how amazing that was,” says Young.

Philip Elson has been a dancer with Hanson’s company since 2008 and is also the technology and media coordinator for the company. In his opinion, the residency allowed the dance company valuable time that they seldom have.

“It’s everything that we dream of when we have these large-scale ideas that we usually don’t have the time to explore or play with before we get into a theatre for a performance,” says Elson. Once on stage, Elson says judgment calls need to be quickly made about the choreography as a whole. “There’s a loss of potential.”

Bodies Some choreographers may need trained dancers to move, testing out new combinations of movement as they translate a piece of work from their imagination to the stage. For others though, what they need most are intellectual brains that they can pick.

“Often a dance maker starts by thinking about a work through research. They want to know more about a topic and that becomes the inspiration,” says Young.

Choreographers who have an interesting idea that they would like to flesh out, seek experts in that particular field.

This need for scholars and researchers adds to the list of reasons why a university is the perfect home for the national center. “We’ve got a full research university to provide research support, along with a school of music, a school of art and all of these smart, intelligent faculty and students who could be available as resources,” says Sapienza.

“So if choreographers come in and are looking for not only time and space, but perhaps bodies to move, then we can provide them with trained bodies as well, trained students.”

Utilizing students at The University of Akron would not only benefit the incoming dance makers, but would also provide real-world experience for students. “Letting students engage with professionals in that way — that’s an integral part of being a polytechnic institute,” says Sapienza.

Though The Seldoms did not need any additional bodies on the dance floor, they made use of local academic resources.

The center is currently in its infancy though it has been in the works for many years. The first few steps included a Blue Ribbon Panel — where the interest for the center was confirmed and the need was echoed by many — and two pilot residencies, which began with The Seldoms and concluded with choreographer John Jasperse.

Next on the docket is securing a fivemember board to run the center.

According to Sapienza and Young, this board will be made up of two representatives from the university, two from DANCECleveland and one from the Knight Foundation. This board will need to lay a lot of groundwork before the center can truly get off the ground.

“Funding from the Knight Foundation has been pledged, but they need to see a lot of documentation signed off on prior to making any kind of award,” says Young.

A pledge of five million dollars will be distributed to the center through a fund that will increase each year by a million dollars for five years.

The creation of choreography at the center is an exciting prospect for those in the dance world. “I can feel [this] national group of really amazing people collectively holding their breath hoping that this is really going to launch; this is really going to happen,” says Young. / Managing Editor Molly Gase is gearing up to make homemade noodles for the fall. Lifting weights, minds and spirits / The surprising overlap of holistic health and three professionals who know how to use it /

It was Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, who first proposed that one’s mental and physical health were connected, one even manifesting itself in the other.

Today a holistic, or a well-rounded, approach to fitness is an increasing norm. Many trainers, physicians and spiritual healers are well aware of this “triangle” of health — that one branch of holistic health can easily lead to another — and know how it can benefit you. So, are you ready to hop on that ten-speed for a pick-me-up?

Physical Feeling down? You could benefit from taking a hike Are you tired, run-down, listless? A simpleyet-demanding solution to a drooping mood or low self-esteem may be as easy as a run around the block, according to research in physical and mental health. Making and taking the so-called “30-Day Challenge” in fitness training, it turns out, could be more worthwhile than just defined abs or toned legs. No vitamin-supplements required.

Studies finding a correlation between happy and healthy date back to the 1980s. A classic study from Stanford University concluded that physical activity did improve one’s mental health, along with alleviating mild to moderate depression, bettering self-image and even “improving social skills.” That’s right: exercise can make you the life of the party.

Personal trainers, like Scott Garan of Garan Fitness in Kent, know this well. Garan, who was a police detective for 20 years before becoming a full-time trainer in 2007, says that the key to a successful fitness plan is getting to know and understand his clients as people.

Any drawn up fitness plan — bench squats to circuit training to “battle ropes” — he says, must be personalized.

This, he says, can lead to some surprises.

One woman, who initially came to Garan for a weight-training plan, called up her trainer one day after she was overjoyed to have picked up a 40-pound bag of dog food out of her trunk. “All of a sudden it just hit her,” Garan says, “how important the training actually was.” For him, she’s just one of several who have realized the mental strength that comes with the physical.

“It’s funny,” he says, “because I see people change as much emotionally as they do physically. It’s tough, I know. That’s why I say, ‘Just stay with me for two weeks, no matter how bad it sucks, just stay with me.”

Mental Keeping your brain healthy means making, and keeping, a good sleeping habit Getting enough Z’s recently?

As suggested by a recent study published in Nature Neuroscience, just the slightest amount of sleep deprivation may lead to more than groggy mornings and extra cups of coffee.

Neurologists posit that sleep loss may be correlated with memory loss and even weight gain.

Norman Friedman, a neurologist with Akron Neurology, specializes in Sleep Medicine. He’s well aware of the effects of sleep deprivation, yet his current research focuses on its primary cause, sleep apnea. However, for other folks, the cause of their lethargy may go totally unsolved.

Studies say that even just a week of sleep deprivation can lead to a significant alteration in glucose tolerance — meaning weight gain — and even, if prolonged, certain cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. A September 2014 study for Neurology analyzed the sleeping habits of 147 adults, and concluded that there was a “strong relationship” between sleep quality and the cortical and hippocampal (which includes memory) volume and atrophy of the brain.

That is to say, poor sleep may shrink our noggins.

But how are third-shift workers or night owls supposed to compensate? Friedman suggests a proper diet — with a bunch of protein and cruciferous vegetables, like arugula and cauliflower — along with plenty of exercise (three plus hours a week). Yet still, he says that a good night’s sleep trumps all.

“The immediate effect of sleep deprivation is that we’re less efficient,” Friedman says, “and we may not even know it.”

A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned/A Penny Lost is a Penny Yearned If you’re at least 50 years young, chances are you have dreams of retirement and the life that awaits you. However, lifetime commitments such as your children’s education, personal medical bills that settle in with increased age and expenses associated with elderly parents may be putting your plans on hold. In March of this year, Nancy Anderson, renowned journalist and contributor to Forbes online provided a startling statistic regarding these expenditures as she writes: “Due to circumstances like these, only 26 percent of Americans plan on a traditional retirement.”

Luckily, if you’re proactively managing your future, there are several ways to maximize your savings.

1. Add more to your retirement savings When you turn 50, the I.R.S. allows you to contribute more to the savings accounts associated with retirement. They call this the “Catch-Up Provision,” and this basically permits one to add an additional $6,000 per year to your 401k. To give an example: if a 49-year-old in 2014 had contributed the maximum allowance of $18,000, in 2015 that extra $6,000 will bump your savings to a grand total of $24,000. If you have a traditional IRA, you’re also allowed to contribute an additional $1,000 per year, bringing the savings to $6,500. Founding father and author Benjamin Franklin once said “Beware of small expenses; a small 50

leak will sink a great ship” so keep frivolous spending low!

2. Employ a Health Savings Account If you qualify for a Health Savings Account, or HSA, you can plan ahead for medical issues that may drain your retirement funds.

Once again, there’s a catch-up provision for those 55 and older, allowing you to bring an additional $1,000 per year into the account.

Another great feature of a HSA is that through a payroll deduction, they’re invested pre-tax. The funds also carry over from year to year, allowing one to save up for medical costs in retirement.

3. Time your mortgage payoff with your retirement date There’s never been a better point in America’s history to refinance your mortgage. Millions of Americans have done this to take advantage of the low interest rates enforced by the government. So why can’t you do the same? Before you do, decide on whether you’d like to keep your home as a tax deduction when you’re in retirement. If this is the case, refinancing your mortgage may not be the best road to go down, but one must also note the money they’ll save by not having to pay exorbitant interest. The latter may outweigh the former, so research and planning is the key.

4. Long Term Care Insurance If long-term care insurance has been

something on the back of your mind and you keep putting it off, there are advantages to getting a plan now as opposed to later.

Typically, the younger you are when you apply for a plan, you will likely have more favorable underwriting and premiums may be lower. This in tandem with the HSA discussed earlier, may provide additional financial stability for retirement.

5. Keep your investments on track Your financial advisor has your best interests in mind when it comes to your future. They want your investments to grow and stay on pace with your retirement. Set up meetings with your financial advisor to review your portfolio; both parties being proactive can guide the ship of retirement towards a soft landing at port, as a potential way to enjoy these bountiful years.

Given these points, the best years of your life are upon you. A successful retirement is doing the things that bring you joy and happiness in life and knowing that you’ve taken the time to plan for those items. Give yourself a retirement pay-raise and get started today.

Because our mind’s circadian rhythm, or our sleep clock, is so in tune with the sun’s cycle, abnormal schedules, along with our family and working lives, makes maintaining a sound habit of 7-8 hours a night so onerous. “Of course it’s tough,” Friedman says. “Because it’s part of the lifestyle that we feel compelled to live, which makes it [difficult] already to get enough rest.”

Spiritual Reiki: From High Neck Pains to Even Higher Spirits For many newcomers to the practice of Reiki, a Japanese healing technique developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, the aim tends to be physical — alleviating overwhelming headaches, sore necks or backs. Reiki master Jennifer Jakubek, of the Holistic Lifestyle Solutions in Highland Square, stresses that the practice delves into a higher territory of healing.

“Pain is one of the easiest things Reiki can do. I remove headache pains all the time,” she says. “But it goes deeper — I’m talking about the soul.”

Reiki defined as spiritual healing rests in its name: “Rei,” meaning “God” or “Spirit,” and “Ki,” meaning roughly “guided life force energy.” Through gentle placements of the palms, masters like Jakubek shift concentrations of energy built up in distinct parts of the body, all according to an energy system composed of pinpoints, or “chakras.” It’s this fundamental spiritual component of Jakubek’s practice that acts as a base for the “solutions” of Holistic Lifestyles. “Reiki comes through what we do, and in everything we do,” she says.

What initially began as the Rainbow Healing Arts Center, this summer Jakubek expanded her business with the “whole” in holistic in mind. Because she would often discern other needs—psychological to physiological—in her patients, she gathered a full staff of seven: from a full-time nutritionist, to an aromatherapist, to a practitioner of Qi-gong, a Chinese health system similar to Reiki.

In just the past few months, she’s gained devoted followers and clients, from women who ask for prenatal readings (to predict their child’s personality) to advice on how to handle poor eating habits. The goal, Jakubek says, is to help her clients “create wellness in every aspect of their lives.”

Jakubek, who speaks about her experiences communicating with the supernatural as if talking about long lost friends, acknowledges that though her practice may be “something a little different than the norm,” her clients’ gratitude is highly rewarding. Many come up to her at the grocery store or the pool, months after their session, expressing how much Jakubek has altered their daily lives. For some, all it took was journaling before bed; others, to know more about the death of a loved one.

When approaching the home, visitors can see the Central American flare in the landscaping, which won Toth the Impact Landscaping Award in Summit County.

Sitting on over an acre of land, this 7,000-square-foot home features six bedrooms, five bathrooms, three kitchens and many specialized rooms. All of this space was a nessecity for Toth’s large family. “When I built the house, I built it with space in mind,” he says. “We like to entertain and we have parties every other week,” says Toth.

Apart from the traditional rooms, the local businessman also had entertainment in mind when planning his home. Forget a little extra seating in a living room, Toth’s house has a room with an infrared sauna, a spa with a tanning bed and a theatre room that brings the big screen into his own home. When he has work on the mind however, Toth has a slightly untraditional home office.

Instead of dark wood paneling lining the walls, his office is made of glass. “Everybody has always accused me of living in a glass bubble, so I built a glass office. I also wanted to make sure it overlooked the lake.”

But what is all of this without someone to share it with? More than just an address, Toth actually married his wife Gina right there at their home. “Gina and I got married here five years ago,” he says. “We had a very big and enjoyable wedding.” In addition to his wife, Toth has eight children and a couple of grandchildren.

wonderful view of Portage Lake, with the lake on the side of the property. As the sun sets, the family can marvel at the scene on one of four different patios, each on a different level.

“You can watch the sunset by the pool, then on the first patio on the lower level, then also on the terrace on the main level and on the top terrace in my office,” he says.

Though Toth is very passionate about his work and continues to make products for the betterment of the air, even winning the title of 2015 Most Innovative Product, he loves relaxing at home. “It’s absolutely beautiful at night, and that’s when we enjoy the outside living the most.” / Ashlyn Wilson is an editorial intern who is working on her journalism degree at Kent State University.

Red Blends to enjoy this fall Gnarly Head Authentic Black and Insurrection Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon As we say goodbye to summer and our patio white wines and start to head into the fall, I’ll start to drink more of the middle-bodied reds. Because of so many different styles, the red blends are excellent for the fall months.

Wine Wisdom: About a ton of grapes will produce about 720 bottles, or 60 cases of wine. With 12 bottles in a case, and approximately five glasses per bottle, that’s more than 3,600 glasses of wine.

Red blends have become so popular because they are so easy to drink. Winemakers will blend a number of different grape varietals to produce a big, full-bodied or a soft, velvety wine. Here are two that you may want to try – Gnarly Head Authentic Black from Lodi, Calif., and Insurrection from South Eastern Australia.

Gnarly Head Authentic Black is a bolder, richer dark blend because the base grape is a Petite Sirah. The juice also has a lot of skin contact. More skin contact gives the wine its deep dark shade of red and bolder flavors. The wine is aged for 12 months in oak and the grapes come from a vineyard located in Lodi, Calif. The wine has a profile of aromas including black cherry and blackberries, along with a nice bold body. The dark fruit elements have a lingering finish. This wine pairs well with pork ribs or is great to just sip on a cool fall night. Gnarly Head Authentic Black retails for $12.99.

Insurrection Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon is an easy to drink red blend from South Eastern Australia. The grapes were sourced from the cool climate vineyards in two regions — Padthaway and Langhorne Creek in South Eastern Australia. The warm days help to create intense flavors, while the cool nights maintain the robust character of the grapes that go into making Insurrection. The wine is aged in French and American barrels for up to eight months to give it strong structured tannins.
