/ A bucket list item fulfilled, and a friend gone too soon /

The darkest thoughts come just before the dawn. >> That is what I was thinking as I drove toward the Stark State College campus in the predawn hours to go up in the air. I only knew that I was to report to the campus by 5:30 a.m. for a chance to fly in some sort of aerial contrivance.

I had sworn off doing anything that would get my feet in the air any higher than a step ladder in a column I wrote for our January 2013 magazine. In it, I wrote about a dream I had in which issue of “I saw myself hanging in mid-air, being able to only see my legs and feet and then nothing but empty air for more than a mile down. And it scared the hell out of me. I’ll let you know if I ever do get off the ground.”

I am here to tell you that I indeed got my feet well and truly off the ground — in a hot air balloon. And was it ever a cool experience, a bucket list fulfillment for sure.

The opportunity arose when Managing Editor Abby Cymerman forwarded an invitation to participate in the media flight of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Balloon Classic and ride in one of the hot air balloons. The best time to take off in a hot air balloon is at sunrise or sunset because the rising or descending sun causes shafts of warm air to rise, which the balloonists take advantage of to lift into the air. I’m so glad to have experienced my first ride at sunrise; seeing the trail of balloons stretched across the sky to the new day’s horizon was something I’ll never forget, and not just because I photographed the experience.

The balloon is hauled in a small enclosed trailer, and everything fits into it compactly. Once out of the trailer, the balloon envelope is stretched out, and the basket is turned onto its side. I actually helped hold the envelope open while Rick Kohut, the balloon’s pilot, blew air into it with a high-speed fan. When the balloon opened sufficiently, Kohut lit the burner directly above the basket and forced hot flame upward.

As the envelope filled, the two of us hopped aboard the 6-by-6 foot wicker basket. Moments later, the earth seemed to part ways with us.

Before I knew it, we were 800 feet in the air, looking down on people who were sitting in lawn chairs in their driveways and waving up at us.

The feeling of liftoff was so gentle that any anxiety I had about getting my feet off the ground vanished, and the feeling of peace and calm overcame me as we serenely floated over the forests and the fields. We spooked a small herd of deer and watched them race quickly over the fences and ditches in the field until they disappeared into the woods beyond. Way cool.

Kohut has been ballooning for about 15 years, having gotten the bug after his first ascent. His wife, family and close friends serve as his crew (The more the merrier, it appears), and they all keep coming back because every once in a while, he’ll take them for a ride. I want to thank Collyn Floyd, with the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Kohut for the opportunity to cross another adventure off my new-found bucket list. >> My friend Jack Richard died last month. He had more influence on the landscape of local artists than any other single person I know. He was not only a strong advocate for the arts, but he contributed to the number of very good artists in the Greater Akron area and the world beyond during his 70-some years of teaching. His biography and many testimonials can be found elsewhere, but I wanted to take this space to acknowledge the passing of my dear friend. The Studios of Jack Richard is still open and is being run by Jack’s longtime protégé Mark Giangaspero. We will have an expanded testimonial in the October issue. Soap Box Derby This year's Soap Box Derby, held in Akron, featured contestants from the United States as well as from other countries worldwide. About $28,500 was given out in scholarship money. Ohio had two local winners: 13-yearold Emerson Minch, of Cleveland, won the Super Stock Division, and 12-year-old Dylan Theisen, of Tallmadge, won the Rally Super Stock Division.

First Lady's Tiara Displayed at McKinley Museum Ida McKinley's diamond tiara is now on display at the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum.

The museum met its deadline of raising $43,000 in three months through donations to be able to purchase the tiara from the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas. The custom-made piece holds 200 diamonds and was one of Mrs. McKinley's finest pieces of jewelry to be worn at the most special occasions.

School Lunch Prices Rise Medina and Brunswick schools have raised their breakfast and lunch prices by 25 cents a meal.

Medina elementary school lunch prices will now be $2.50, middle school lunch prices will be $2.75 and high school lunch prices will be $3. Brunswick elementary school lunch prices will now be $2.75, middle school lunch prices will be $3 and high school lunch prices will be $3.25. The increase is due to rising food and supply costs.

Kent State is now operating its own food truck, a yellow vehicle dubbed “Fork in the Road.” The university considered

sourcing ingredients locally but scrapped the idea upon realizing it would mean acknowledging Ohioans beyond Kent city limits.

Ohio Governor John Kasich is resisting a subpoena calling him to testify in the trial of a Canton telemarketing millionaire. The incumbent is protesting

the subpoena on the grounds that it’s “a total bummer” that doesn’t fit with his “era of good feeling” re-election platform.

Milich’s Village Inn, a beloved eatery and part of Barberton’s “fried chicken capital” status, will close after almost 60 years in business. Locals regard the closing as “the end of an era so obscure it’s a real stretch to even call it an ‘era.’”

A Streetsboro man was arrested for operating a “grow house” after 1,000 to 5,000 grams of marijuana were found in his residence. Kent citizens have launched a campaign to transport the house within city limits and are seeking active garden spaces as possible building sites.

The Eye of the Beholder My son and I arrived at the museum soon after it opened, and other than docents and security guards, we were the only people there. When we came to the Anatsui exhibit, we lay on our backs on the floor with our heads close to the wall and looked up at one tapestry. We didn’t see a wall-hanging but, instead, a topographic map of mountains and valleys. Although the security guard in the gallery looked concerned at first, once he heard us discussing the piece’s craters and oceans, I’m sure I saw his eyes twinkle.

My parents often like to tell a story about my first visit to the Cleveland Museum of Art when I was very young.

I was standing in front of a modern art painting, tilting my head sideto-side, and my dad asked me if I liked it. “How do you know you like it, if you don’t know what it is?” I replied, and that was the beginning of my quest to understand contemporary masterpieces.

Over the years, I’ve learned to let go of the confines of reality when it comes to art and try to appreciate it as it is: shapes, colors, images and the feelings they evoke. In doing that, I can focus on the artwork and make the subject matter become whatever I choose.

Whatever art inspires you — fine art, performing art or the written word — embrace it and then create your own interpretation of it.

This concept is a tough one to explain to my children. When the El Anatsui exhibit came to the Akron Art Museum several years ago, I took my then-4-year-old son to see these tapestries made from recycled liquor bottle caps and milk-can lids.

The thing that most amazes me about that traveling exhibit is that Anatsui never tells the galleries how to display each piece. They can hang from the ceiling, drape over boxes on the floor or be stretched tight against the wall. The exhibit itself is so organic, you can see the same pieces installed at two museums and never see the same exact exhibit.

Any visitor to our house is sure to comment on two things.

The first comment always addresses the chicken infestation that plagues the garden as our laying hens cavalierly lay to waste row after row of bright, red beefsteaks and cucumbers greener than the soul of an Irishman.

This is a topic as frustrating as it is irremediable, and I have no desire to discuss it further, but the second surefire comment visitors make is in regards to the large, dead oak tree that manages to stand erect in our front yard despite being many years on the wrong side of death.

My awareness of trees has heightened ever since I moved to an area of the country that people love to describe as “wild.” It’s an apt description as, when I look out any window of our Civil War-era home, I see not houses or other buildings; I see trees. White ash, cedar, apple, walnut, cherry, dogwood, beech — a circular wall of leafy green surrounding our homestead. We have neighbors somewhere on the other side of the forest — I can hear them talking, sometimes even singing, when the weather turns cool and sound moves less encumbered across the landscape — but we don’t encounter them all that often as it would require either a long walk down a windy, country road or a treacherous hike with a machete and snakebite kit through the dense underbrush. So mostly I just sit on the porch and wave to the infrequent cars that amble past.

One of the neighbors who did manage to cross the deciduous density between our houses (really, he just drove up our driveway) works for the forestry department and knows a lot about trees. One morning, as I blearily stumbled along our gravel drive, full bucket of chicken feed loosely gripped in my hand, his white work truck made a quick turn off our

one-lane road to pull up beside me. A friendly but generally nervous guy (a description one could easily level at me as well), my neighbor made some awkward small talk about pigs (we both raise hogs on our little farms) then extended a hand clutching what looked like spare twigs he’d collected from his yard.

“Didn’t know if you’d want these,” said my neighbor, “but they’re hickory trees. They make a wonderful eating nut.”

I took the gift, thanking him profusely, then brought the tiny trees into my house with the intention of planting them later that day, a task I sadly never got around to. But while I won’t enjoy an eventual bounty of hickory nuts from these trees, the experience was something like a tiny root itself for, after chasing a few mongrel mutts out of my yard a month ago, I grabbed my phone and called my tree-gifting neighbor to suggest he keep a watchful eye out for the terrorizing trio. So in a way, his trees did bear fruit — or maybe it’s better described as he gained a nut, one that calls with dire warnings about wandering pooches. Either way, the metaphor holds true.

Recently, I was invited to “like” the Facebook page of an organization dedicated to reforesting the more citified parts of my town. I haven’t accepted the invitation and probably won’t, as I don’t want to be disingenuous: My thoughts at the moment run more toward taking down a few trees rather than planting new ones, hickory intentions aside. I need to clear a glen out for the pigs and, at some point, create a wooded pasture for my small herd of heritage cows. I’ll leave enough trees to maintain my claustrophobic living conditions though — I couldn’t clear-cut our acreage even if I wanted to.

I’m far from indifferent toward trees: I love them both for their imposing beauty and the integral part trees play in our ecosystem, converting noxious gasses into the very air we

breathe. I also gather metaphorical value from the way a tree branches out in unpredictable ways, making snaky paths that appear random and meandering when followed closely but, when viewed from a few steps back, reveal an organism almost purposeful in its intent.

As both a conversationalist and a writer, I’m inclined toward tangents that curl ever further away from the root of my original idea, but any tree I spy reminds me that a coherent whole can be pulled together from even the most unwieldy branch of ideas and imagery.

(Likewise, my editor could point to the necessity of pruning to overall tree health.)

My wife and I recently assigned our five-yearold daughter lines of poetry to memorize, beginning with the opening stanza of Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees”: I think that I shall never see A poem as lovely as a tree.

Now, Mr. Kilmer obviously never saw the gnarled and decrepit oak corpse in my front yard, but I like to imagine he shared my writer’s appreciation for a tree’s unpredictable, ever-stretching path out — and upward. Or maybe he’d look at its dead husk, littering the ground beneath it with broken, falling branches, and say what everybody, without fail, says of the dead tree in my front yard: “Well, you should have plenty of firewood this winter.” / Rodney Wilson is a freelance writer who can still be found slumped over his laptop, rewriting a young adult novel and, as always, listening to Taylor Swift.

/ Community Arts Director, Neighborhood Development Services Inc., and Curator, Nine Muses Gallery / Emily Speelman is so passionate about the arts, she’s leading the charge to give Barberton a cultural makeover.

As a child, Speelman dreamed of working in the arts.

She studied industrial design at the Columbus College of Art and Design, and as her expertise in the arts grew, so did her love for it. Today, this photographer from Cuyahoga Falls always carries her sketchbook or trusty camera.

ES: I am looking forward to when we really get things rolling. We’ll have a couple different galleries, restaurants and the art center. All of these things are in the works. Just watching how the city changes … I’m really excited.

When it was announced that downtown Barberton would become an arts and entertainment district, Speelman gave the project her support. After sharing her ideas with Neighborhood Development Services Inc. (NDS), Speelman was chosen as the community arts director.

ES: I’ve been involved in the arts my whole life. When I moved back to the Akron area after school, I started showing in local galleries. I’ve integrated myself into the arts scene and hope to bring that into Barberton now.

Speelman envisions Barberton as a place where residents and visitors will be able to shop, see movies in the historic Lake Theater, enjoy art galleries or sip hot coffee at Kave Coffee Bar.

ES: Barberton is an industrial town, and it has become a bit depressed. It’s more known for sports and chicken. So, we’re hoping to bring new businesses in with the arts and give people a reason to come downtown to visit, and maybe even stay.

NDS has invested $1.2 million into the project and plans to spend another $400,000 to renovate the nearby former Summit County Health Department into a gallery and space for art classes.

As community arts director and curator for Nine Muses Gallery, Speelman plans to educate people on the significance of arts in the community.

What part of this project are you most looking forward to?

What makes you an expert on arts and entertainment?

How will the atmosphere change once these projects are completed?

ES: I like to think the image will improve, and people will look at Barberton as a cultural center.

If you look at Holmes County, you think of the Amish. When people think of Barberton, we want them to think of arts and entertainment and as a really nice place to go.

As the curator for Nine Muses Gallery, what do you think about sharing a space with Kave Coffee Bar? ES: I’m so excited to be a part of Kave. We’re going to really work well together. We’re going to have spaces throughout the gallery where people can take their drinks, sit in a big comfy chair and admire the art. We’re going to have books and sketchpads throughout the space, so people can just come and read, do little drawings or whatever they like.

ES: There’s been a lot of good feedback, and a lot of local artists are looking forward to showing at the gallery. It’s something that this town has been missing for a long time. I think it would be really nice to help the younger generation (understand that) you can make a living with the arts, and you don’t have to get a factory job if you don’t want to.

How important is it for children to experience the arts?

ES: It’s very important. The younger they learn, the more they can pursue it and keep up with different aspects of art. It’s all about creating. I think it will be really good to have the arts center facilities there. Whenever people want to learn, it’s there for them.

“And Your Bird Can Sing” / Kent State professor compiles his collection of short fiction. /

Robert Miltner isn’t a fiction writer who’s concerned with style; he just wants to tell stories.

“And Your Bird Can Sing,” published by Bottom Dog Press, is Miltner’s collection of 31 pieces of micro, flash and brief fiction, none exceeding more than a few pages. The author, who currently lives in Canton’s Vassar Park neighborhood, says as a middle child growing up in Avon Lake, he told stories for attention.

Today, in addition to his role as Associate Professor of English at Kent State University, Miltner works with the Northeast Ohio Master of Fine Arts Program (NEOMFA), a consortium that includes Kent State University, Cleveland State University, The University of Akron and Youngstown State University. This program allows students to focus on writing in a wide range of concentrations.

Miltner came to Kent State in 1987 as a Developmental Education coordinator but moved into full-time teaching in 1995. Since he began teaching short story classes, he began writing more himself.

He credits Ohio writers, such as O. Henry and Sherwood Anderson, with helping him realize short stories were a kind of writing. “A lot of writers who really shaped the way I did things were Ohio writers, which I hadn’t really thought much about,” Miltner says.

He describes the Midwest as centrist — both literally and figuratively.

It doesn’t engage in as much artistic experimentation as other areas of the country. Ohio specifically, Miltner says, is

very much about telling stories. “People just want to be told a good story,” he says. “They don’t want to be dazzled by the prose.”

The inspiration for the pieces in “And Your Bird Can Sing” came from characters, story lines or images. He often takes characteristics from multiple people and merges them into one.

“Compositing is very interesting because it means that the characters have a complexity to them that gives them some interest,” Miltner says. “And because there are several personalities that I am blending together to make this character, it makes them sometimes a little unfathomable, and I kind of like that.”

Miltner organized the book by laying each story on the floor and shuffling them around until he felt they could no longer be moved.

He used this technique with all of his collections: a poetry collection, nine poetry chapbooks and two artist’s books/fine press.

This allowed him to see where gaps existed in the “And Your Bird Can Sing” collection.

“Once I kind of honed in on what I thought the book was going to be, when I began to see what the book was, I started writing new pieces for it to finish it out,” Miltner says.

It was important to him to make sure all the pieces — some written 15 years ago, most written in the last six or seven — sounded like they were all written at the same time, something he came to understand when he wrote his poetry collection.

“I realized at that point, because those poems ranged over a period of time, that I had to edit them so that they all felt like they were all written last week,” Miltner says. “The same thing happened when I did a short story col-

lection. I had that same sense of they all have to feel like they’re written very close together.”

Not doing so ruins the flow and cohesiveness of the book for the reader. “Robert Frost once said, ‘In a book of 24 poems, the book is the 25th,’” Miltner says.

Miltner likes fast stories, and he says he wrote for himself. “Writers who try to write for the market tend to follow what everyone else is doing,” he says. “They don’t find their own vision of what they want to do, and more importantly, they don’t come to a realistic understanding of their limitations as a writer.”

For his newest book, he chose titles last, with the title of a Beatles song for each. As he was trying to come up with a title for the collection, he was driving and kept replaying the song, “And Your Bird Can Sing.” He felt each of the stories was a bird that could sing, and although he first felt the title was contrived, the response to it has been positive.

Writing the short stories was Miltner’s way of training to write a novel. He will be on sabbatical from teaching this fall and taking that time to finish a working draft of his historical novel, “The Tempest.”

The book is about the murder of Frank Lloyd Wright’s lover and others at Taliesin, an Italian-style villa Wright built in Wisconsin.

Miltner came across the topic while reading and says he felt the story didn’t seem to add up, so he began doing more research. “I’m not trying to solve a mystery as much as I’m exploring it because it really fascinates me,” Miltner says.

Miltner wants readers to enjoy the collection of stories in “And Your Bird Can Sing.”

“I hope they’re entertained,” he says. “That’s storytelling.”

When Thomas Sigel was growing up in rural Medina County, his parents often took the family to local art museums and performances by the Cleveland Orchestra.

Years later, when Sigel learned that local funding was being cut for music and art classes and cultural programs were being suspended, Sigel decided to bring the arts into Northeast Ohio neighborhoods and the Ohio Regional Music, Arts, and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) Inc. was born.

The goal of this Medina-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit is to enrich the lives of Northeast Ohioans through music and the arts. Since it was formed, ORMACO has been sponsoring regionally accessible events, including its free Jazz Under the Stars concerts and the World

Tour of Music concert series. And, when he’s not working as a publishing consultant, dabbling in real estate or staying active in his community, Sigel serves as ORMACO’s executive director.

When ORMACO first started offering the Jazz Under the Stars concerts, about 50 people attended. Today, each concert draws at least 500 people. Through the World Tour series and outreach programs, Sigel says ORMACO reaches more than 2,500 people each week, and the numbers continue to grow.

“We didn’t anticipate for this to grow so fast,” he says. “People are coming in from all over, even out of state.”

It takes money to bring performers to the Northeast Ohio area, and ORMACO relies on sponsorships from various organizations and the generosity of local businesses and individuals. The group also has fundraisers to help offset the cost of community concerts and outreach.

shows at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, as well as overnight road trips to Chicago and New York City. The Cleveland trips usually cost under $100 per person, and participants receive a show ticket, catered lunch, wine and a round-trip mini getaway. The October bus trip to see “Motown: The Musical” is sold out, but trips to see “Pippin” and “Kinky Boots” are planned for February and April.

Sigel says the most significant thing that ORMACO offers is its outreach programs which have included percussion workshops and free violin and guitar lessons in the Canton City School District. Medina’s Stephenson Foundation gave a grant to ORMACO to go to Claggett Middle School this fall and host a songwriting workshop for at-risk youth.

“This is really the crux of what we do,” Sigel says. “Many people don’t realize that the true underlying mission for the organization is the outreach, which will really touch the lives of those who ordinarily don’t have the opportunity to experience music, arts and culture.”

Despite organizing professional-quality events and creating innovative workshops, it’s not easy on ORMACO. With seven board members and a handful of volunteers, Sigel says the organization is always looking for people to help organize and secure funding for these programs.

“We knew there was a gap (in arts outreach) and that there was a lack of exposure,” Sigel says. “What we didn’t realize was that the people are really, really hungry for it.”

GASP Annual Spring Party Guardians Advocating Child Safety and Protection (GASP) hosted its GASP Annual Spring Party, May 4, at the Akron Zoo. Partygoers were treated to appetizers, drinks, dinner and dessert, catered by Ivan’s Diner and Catering, and music

by Patrick Ruebensaal. There was also a silent auction and a live auction, which

was led by Bill Holland of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. Attendees also visited parts of the zoo.

This year’s event honored longtime GASP supporter Sandra Haslinger and her family foundation. The keynote speaker was Sharnae Lathan, founder of “Thru a Child’s Eyes. Who Cares?”

GASP raised over $18,000 to continue its mission of keeping our children as safe as possible by providing programs to prevent them from “dangerous” situations, sexual offenses, abuse and abduction. This organization, founded

It was approximately 2,565 years ago that Chinese philosopher Confucius was born, and this fall marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Confucius Institutes worldwide and six years at The University of Akron.

To celebrate, the Confucius Institute at The University of Akron is hosting its sixth annual China Week, Sept. 26 to Oct. 3.

There are 400 Confucius Institutes all over the world and in 88 countries, and Ohio has four of them — The University of Akron, Miami University, University of Toledo and Cleveland State — the largest number concentrated in one state. The Confucius Institutes from three other Ohio universities will be hosting a community celebration to honor the teachers of Chinese in the state of Ohio.

Akron’s university partner for China Week is Henan University in Kaifeng, China. In both towns, special events will include a week of music, dance, martial arts and the arts of China. One of the featured performers during China Week is the musical group, The Orchid Ensemble, from Canada.

Performers are scheduled to come to Akron from every direction of the globe to contribute to the lectures and cultural programming of China Week. The Shanxi University Art Troupe will perform Sept. 30 at E.J. Thomas Hall on The University of Akron campus, as well as at Jackson High School and Lakewood High School.

Shifu Gary Harris, owner and head teacher of the Center for BodyMind Harmony, returns to Buchtel Commons on The University of Akron campus to guide participants in “Morning Taiji.”

From Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, participants will learn the Yang style of Taiji called 24 Forms.

Each morning from 8 to10 a.m., instruction will be given for starting the day with Taiji movements, form and proper breathing to instill a calm sense of well-being for the whole day. Students with all levels of experience are welcome.

Harris’ experience in martial arts began when he was in elementary school. After graduation from the University of Hawaii in 1975, he returned to the mainland and, after witnessing a Taiji demonstration, began his journey with Taiji. He was immediately impressed with the control and fluidity of the form. Harris continued his instruction under the late Master David Schenk, the previous head teacher and owner of the Center for Body-Mind Harmony. With honor and respect, Harris follows Schenk’s philosophy that martial arts are not about fighting, but about the journey to self-creating harmony between the mind and body.

From Kent to Akron to Cleveland, The Sikoras fight the tyranny of the mundane.

Talking with Ted Sikora and Diane Davis-Sikora is like opening up a great wardrobe of ideas that other people would never think of mixing and matching.

With affinities for both the ancient and the futuristic, the couple blends foreign with familiar in ways that are both light-hearted and thought-provoking. Their work is individual yet collaborative, in the sense that being together has clearly influenced what they do and how they do it.

Ted is an independent filmmaker who studied accounting for two years because his parents convinced him that his dream of making a living as a comic book artist was unrealistic. And besides, he was good at math.

Diane is a licensed architect and associate professor in Kent State University’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design. She studies large-scale pneumatic structures (inflatables) that can be used to bring aeroponic (soil-free) gardening to cities.

Ted earned his bachelor’s in media from The University of Akron, and as it turns out, he’s thankful for the number-crunching skills he picked up in those accounting classes. Diane has an Ivy League background with undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard and Cornell, respectively.

The back story The pair met in early 2001 at a two-day workshop on storyboarding sponsored by the Cleveland Film Society.

Ted enrolled in the class while planning visuals for his film, “Hero Tomorrow,” about a would-be comic artist/ superhero who tries to channel the stealth and strength of an undiscovered animal to fight crime. Diane signed up because she was interested in exploring the relationship between film and architecture. The fields are similar, she says, in that they both create environments that move people believably through space and time.

Aside from a physical attraction, Ted says Diane’s comments in the first session caught his attention. He knew that if he was going to get to know her, he’d have to act fast, so he decided to come late to the second class to snag a seat next to hers.

His plan worked. When the instructor — video artist Kasumi — gave the students an assignment to spend the final hour of the class drawing the person next to them, Ted couldn’t believe his good fortune. As he recalls it, Diane’s crisp drawings included interesting architectural details; his sketches zoned in on her “doe-y, beautiful, perfect eyes.”

At the end of class, Ted asked Diane if he could call her, but her reply wasn’t exactly what he’d imagined.

“Why?” she asked, leaving him scrambling to figure out what to say next.

“I wasn’t sure if it was a date,” Diane explains all these years later – still amused by the memory of that awkward, early exchange.

After Ted made his intentions clear, Diane gave him a chance, and they began dating.

When Ted and Diane are together, there’s electricity in the air. He’s the lead storyteller, but she peppers his comments with fresh takes and a quick wit at just the right moments. They take turns nodding and laughing. Their eyes dance as they share stories of their adventures together, both great and small.

Married since 2003, the couple is now in the thick of parenting their daughter Jada who — not surprisingly — loves to draw, is forever making up stories and has been fighting for computer time with her dad’s digital illustration tools since she was 5.

There’s the marriage proposal story … Diane was finishing a semester of teaching in Florence, Italy.

Ted joined her for a twoweek vacation that culminated with a trip to Venice.

He proposed on the Piazza outside the Basilica on the six-month anniversary of 9/11 against the backdrop of Andrea Bocelli’s live concert to benefit its victims.

Could there be a more aweinspiring environment than this to ask if she wanted to spend her life with him?

And then there’s the Carnivale-themed wedding at Cleveland Public Theatre in Gordon Square, complete with Venetian imagery and masks for the wedding party. They share honeymoon stories of driving around Maui in a rented Jeep, and there are tales of business trips and vacations to diverse destinations like Rotterdam and Istanbul.

Their family — which includes Rosie, the cat — lives in a Merriman Hills Tudor-style home that has stretched their patience and their bank accounts more times than they’d like to remember. They’ve dealt with everything from termite damage to broken foundation joists.

They also have a second home on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland that they couldn’t bear to sell after inheriting it from Diane's father. They recently rented it to a family friend but the home has plenty of room for them to stay when they’re doing things in Cleveland.

The Sikoras seem to move effortlessly across the regional boundaries that divide many Northeast Ohioans: Akron and Kent, Summit County and Cuyahoga County, Cleveland’s East side and West side.

Their church home is St. Bernard Parish in Akron, which Ted says has ignited his new interest in spiritual things and his hunt for the earliest translations of the Bible.

They may be regulars at the House of Hunan in downtown Akron (the first restaurant they ever took their daughter), but Luigi’s carry out is another family staple, and the couple often chooses burgers and drinks at Hyde Park for date nights.

Active in Cleveland’s arts and entertainment scene, they love dining at the Siam Café and Chef Zack Bruell’s L’Albatros on Bellflower and seeing movies at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

Diane describes her marriage with Ted as fun and sweet. Life with Diane, Ted says, is “like 100 miles per hour … and beautiful.”

On Life Goals Diane: “We don’t think marriage has changed our trajectory or life goals. It’s definitely not a relationship that has hindered creativity in any way.”

Ted: “We really encourage each other.

As a team, we seem to find ways to do more.”

On Being an Interracial Couple Diane: “It’s never been an issue with us, our family or friends. We don’t think about it.”

Ted Lawson:

PAINTING THE TOWN

Local Artist Ted Lawson loves New York City, and he conveys this love in his work.

“I love the excitement of the city, I’m energized by it, and I plow this energy into a painting,” he says at his studio in Canton.

His watercolor paintings capture a moment in time. Whether it’s Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village or Times Square at night, he likes to catch the magic of the city.

“I’m fascinated by everyday scenes of people in extraordinary locations,” he says.

As a child, Lawson loved to draw and was encouraged by his teachers while growing up in Phoenix, Ariz. After high school and a stint in the U.S. Navy, he became a mechanical engineer, and his career with Marathon Petroleum took him to many exciting cities around the world, always with his camera in hand.

Twenty years ago, he decided to pursue his artistic talent and began to take classes with the late Bette Elliott.

“I chose watercolor because I heard it was the most challenging,” he says. But painting flowers and barns didn’t inspire him, and Elliott encouraged him to take his art down a different path.

Then, Lawson’s daughter, Emily, moved to New York City, and when he visited, he was inspired by the city.

Lawson is inspired by Andrew Wyeth and Leonardo da Vinci, artists who created timeless masterpieces using their own individual styles.

“As I stood in Times Square, it all came together, and I knew I wanted to paint people, places and things,” he says. “She took us

Whenever Lawson is in New York City, he visits Times Square — usually at night.

His paintings feature interesting, bold patterns and vivid colors. Some viewers refer to his work as photorealistic, but he said his work is quite abstract, with the elements of each shape fitting together like a very large puzzle.

With his camera as his sketchbook, he takes an inordinate number of photos when he travels. From an individual photo, he considers a moment in time, draws a sketch and finally, a painting. Since he is trained as an engineer, he applies those skills to his artwork and uses mathematic principles as an aid in developing large scale drawings and paintings from small format photos.

When Lawson rode in New York City’s Five Borough Bike Tour, he mounted a camera on the handlebars of his bike — then he painted an iconic scene of the bikers. And he loves signs; a favorite painting shows a rush hour in New York’s Chinatown, a mass of signs “and no one knows what they say,” he says. His painting of Taggart’s Ice Cream Store in Canton graces the cover of “Stark ARThology,” an anthology of Stark County artists published in 2010.

Lawson retired from Marathon in 2010 and pursues his work as a watercolor artist from his home-based studio in Canton, where he resides with his wife, Patricia. “I prefer to paint from my heart,” he says, but he does accept commissions.

Lawson is a signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society and currently is president of the Canton Artists League. His work has been featured in many art shows and exhibitions, including the Salmagundi Club in New York City; and in one-man shows at the Canton Museum of Art, Second April Gallery and recently at The Box Gallery at Summit Artspace in Akron.

Do you ever dream of being your own boss or seeking a position in an entirely new career field? Kevin Noon and Suzan Houston have “been there, done that.”

When Noon was laid off from his construction job in 2008, his wife suggested he take his lifelong hobby of knife sharpening and turn it into a business. His father had taught him how to sharpen knives at age 6, and over the years, he would use his skills to help family and friends.

After conducting a quick web search, Noon realized there were very few professional sharpeners, and no one was attempting it fulltime. That’s how Noon Sharpening began.

Today, Noon travels to area farmers’ markets and grocery stores and provides his services in an environmentally-friendly way. He sharpens kitchen knives, scissors and salon shears on a repurposed 1923 Singer treadle sewing machine.

Many people find it helpful to formalize their dreams into a vision statement. A vision statement is a description of what you hope to achieve in your future career, a “big picture” statement which should provide you with a sense of direction.

At this stage in the process, an honest selfassessment is necessary. Sure, you’re enthusiastic, but what else do you bring to the task?

Do you have experience in the industry or profession? Do you have education or training in this field?

You also have to consider if you have the personality for the work. Many businesses require sales and communication skills. Do you like to meet people? Are you comfortable calling and engaging with people you don’t know?

Noon and Houston meet and interact with new customers daily, and they enjoy personal interaction.

Suzan Houston also changed careers, transitioning from a job as a registered dental hygienist to realizing her calling as a family entertainer with her business, 5star-talent. com. Houston had volunteered in a children’s hospital and developed her skills by taking professionally-taught courses in clowning, face painting and balloon twisting. Before she became an entrepreneur, Houston conducted extensive online research on the entertainment field, an important element in developing her career plans.

Next, conduct some research. What do people in this job do every day, what are the position’s advantages and disadvantages, and what is the long-term future of this job and its industry? You can usually find this information at your library or on the Internet.

As a human resources consultant, I’ve seen clients who pursue longtime dreams as well as people whose profession or industry is on the decline and decide to make a strategic change.

There’s a difference between a dream and a career goal. Dreams can be exciting, delightful and full of adventure, but they don’t have to

If you have the opportunity to shadow these people as they do their work, it can be an extremely helpful part of your decision-making process. Noon became a charter member of the Cleveland Sharpeners Guild, a group that freely shares their enthusiasm for knife sharpening. Houston didn’t have any previous contacts in her field, but now she shares her ideas with other entrepreneurs in the family entertainment industry.

Having completed your research, you may learn that there are industry-specific skills required for your second career which will take time to acquire. Take advantage of training provided by your local library or adult education programs. Industry associations often provide in-person and online skill training required by employers within their industries. If possible, take time to attain certification in your new industry. Some employers prefer certification to a college degree, although a degree is always an asset in a job search.

I have found that most people pursuing a second career often find Internet job boards to be non-productive. Employers are usually seeking individuals with experience, and you don’t have experience yet. In almost all job searches, networking is the most productive method of search, and in the case of career change, it’s essential.

Identify people who work in your target industry, develop a list of possible contacts and let them know you’re seeking opportuni-

Happy, Healthy and Wise Five tips for successful retirement living As the saying goes, “What you get out of life depends on how much you put into it.”

No matter what your age, there are three key components to a happy, successful life – three vital goals – and they are the same for everyone. We all want to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. We all want to enjoy quality time with family and friends. And we all want time to pursue our passions.

A raft of research in the field of healthy aging clearly shows that accomplishing these three goals is directly related to how happy you will be. Therefore, “take charge” adults age 60+ should put together a personal plan and include these three essential questions that offer the greatest opportunity for success.

1. What would I love to experience every day of my life?

2. What factors may impact my ability to experience those things?

3. What options are available to address those factors so I may reach my goals? ties within that industry. Explain how your experience, even if tangential to the industry, can be used. Describe how your recent training brings you up-to-date with industry practices. Don’t hesitate to talk about what you’ve learned about the industry through your research. The people in your network need to believe that you’d be an excellent addition to their industry and that their time helping you is worthwhile.

Again, be realistic about your starting position in the new career. Would you have hired an individual without experience in your former job? Make a personal connection with each person and find hiring managers who have a willingness to hire someone who has shown the diligence to learn about their industry.

In other words, you’re not just seeking a job, you’re about to begin a career in a new industry.

Akron Craft Beer Festival Coming to the Civic this fall

After its trailblazing success last year, the city’s renowned Akron Civic Theatre will bring back its crowd-pleasing Akron Craft Beer Festival on Oct. 10.

The festival will coincide with the opening festivities of Cleveland Beer Week. Along with craft beer from more than 20 breweries, the event will also spotlight the Northeast L LH[Y PJ ;O Ohio premiere U *P] (RYV of the film, “Craft.” The documentary, produced and directed by Craig Noble, explores the flourishing industry of craft beer from coast to coast. To prepare himself for “Craft,” Noble immersed himself in two years of research that included an apprenticeship at a brewery and becoming Cicerone certified, the beer equivalent of a wine sommelier.

The festival will feature East and West Coast breweries (Stone, Revolution and Dogfish Head), as well as acclaimed locals (Fat Heads, Hoppin’ Frog, Jackie O’s and Crafted) and critical darlings from around the globe (BrewDog, Unibroue and La Trappe). A handful of local brewers will be on hand to answer questions about their brews.

The beer fest will also feature Cincinnati’s MadTree Brewing, which is currently only distributed throughout Southeast Ohio. MadTree has garnered quite the following, thanks to its exceptional canned beers which have become a crucial component of the exploding Ohio craft beer movement.

Baxter’s Bar, across the street from the Akron Civic Theatre, will provide appetizers during the event and host an after-party following the festival.

Last year’s Akron Craft Beer Festival sold out, so plan ahead if you want to attend. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available at the Akron Civic Theatre box office and online at AkronCivic.com. You can find the Civic at 182 S. I have always thought art and wine go together because each bottle of wine is like a great piece of artwork.

As a fourth generation vintner and artist, Darcie Kent has both paint and wine running through her veins. It all started when Kent’s great-grandfather, Christian Ruegsegger, came to the United States from Switzerland with his family in 1875 to start a winery in St. Joseph, Mo. Just like Kent does today, he managed the vineyards and painted his own wine labels. In 1945, the winery fell on hard times following the repeal of Prohibition and was forced to close its doors.

Nuevo Modern Mexican and Tequila Bar If you’re looking for Mexican classics with a modern twist, you’ll want to spend an evening in downtown Akron relaxing with a glass of tequila at Nuevo Modern Mexican and Tequila Bar. Located at 54 E. Mill St., this restaurant is serving up dishes with colorful flavors and recipes that are sure to entice guests who want to satisfy their cravings for Mexican fare.

This casual eatery opened its doors last February, and business has been booming, according to Nuevo’s co-owner and chef Zack Hirt.

“Every day is a challenge, but the challenges are exciting,” he says.

“Everyone is so fun to work with. Everyone is learning as we’re going along.”

Although Hirt is self-taught in Mexican cuisine, he didn’t want Nuevo to serve the typical taco or burrito. It took him three years of hard work and collaboration with his wife, Lisa (Nuevo’s co-owner), to determine the restaurant’s menu.

“I tried a lot of new techniques,” Hirt says. “I practiced until everything was perfect.”

In addition to creating their own taco or burrito, guests can order fresh seafood and steak from Nuevo’s menu. The restaurant’s pork carnitas is made with braised pork shoulder that’s laden with spices and herbs and slow-cooked for eight hours.

Other notable dishes include the traditional tamales and carnita empanadas, which are made with Coca-Cola braised beef. If guests are feeling adventurous, they can try unusual dishes, like grilled cactus or nopalitos. There are also tasty vegetarian options, like chili-rubbed tofu.

When it’s time to quench your thirst, Nuevo offers a wide selection of drinks from aged spirits to tequila flights. After attending a dinner that paired entrées with different types of tequila, Hirt was inspired to open a tequila bar at Nuevo.

“They had all these brands of tequila that I’d never seen or heard of before,” Hirt said. “It completely opened our eyes to a whole new world.”

Now, Nuevo’s bar serves variations of the drink, including tequilas that hint at the taste of chocolate, fruit, spices and other decadent flavors.

“Experience all different nuances that tequila has to offer,” Hirt suggests.

People from all walks of life visit Nuevo. Students from The University of Akron can use their Zip Cards there, and Hirt often serves older groups of guests as well.

Hirt also opened a rooftop patio which seats about 40 people and provides a view overlooking downtown Akron.

Until October 1980, the Akron Art Museum was known as the Akron Art Institute, which was opened by ambitious founders on Feb. 1, 1922. They hoped that one day the institute would have a permanent home and its own art collection, in addition to offering art instruction and exhibitions. This photo was taken in 1970.
