How Does Your Garden Grow?

My thumb turned green this summer.

I don't know why.

Not that my thumb was ever totally dead-grass brown, more of a wilted greenish color with brown edges. This year my small garden is flourishing, with tomato plants the size of small shrubs and basil that has taken over the spot it shared with oregano and dill.

Over the years, I’ve had some horticultural success, but that was limited and sporadic. A few years back I really got into garlic after reading a story about a local garlic farm in Doylestown. I ordered several different varieties of bulbs from them and talked my father into letting me take up a small space in his vast garden. With garlic, you plant the cloves in October and harvest in summer.

One of the things I don’t like about gardening is weeding. I did plenty of that as a kid. That and mowing grass are the two suburban duties for which my childhood of weeding my father’s big garden and mowing almost an acre of grass by hand ruined. By spring, the garlic plants and the weeds that grew in their shadow took over one whole side of my father’s neatly maintained garden.

He wasn’t happy, but the garlic flourished, and I repaid him with a large basket of my favorite vegetable. (Is garlic a vegetable?)

This Fresh Food issue comes at an ideal time when we are harvesting the fruits (and vegetables) of our summer labor; or we are eating that which others have labored over, and the abundance is shared by all. (By the way, someone surreptitiously left a half-dozen zucchini on my front porch, apparently running out of friends and family to foist them upon.)

My first garden was at the back of our very tiny lot in Kent when I was about 10. I love cantaloupe, and the thought of growing my own meant I could get them for free. The two or three vines that I planted did well almost all summer until the melons were about the size of softballs.

We did live on a farm (six acres with a barn, chicken coop and corn crib) in Mogadore for almost 10 years. I attempted gardens there, but my distaste for weeding, Japanese beetles and assorted critters doomed most of them to only middling success. The previous owner had planted Jerusalem artichoke and had tried to get rid of them when they began to spread all over the garden.

Unfortunately, he had roto-tilled them, and being much like a potato, they only increased their dominance to the point that nothing short of a backhoe would eviscerate them. I left them alone and let the next owner deal with them.

So my decision this summer to plant a small garden at our new home was met by some eyebrow raising by my wife and kids as if to ask, “Haven’t you had enough?” I decided to buy plants instead of starting from seed, as I had done in the past. By the time I wanted to plant, however, the ground was as hard as cement due to the lack of rain. As I puzzled over how I was going to break into my concrete yard, the plants remained in the containers in which I had bought them. I watered them every day and added a dose of Miracle-Gro on Sunday. Before I knew it, the tomatoes, beans, peppers and herbs were outgrowing these small containers. That’s when I got the brilliant idea of replanting everything into large containers. (Now, I know this is called “container gardening” by some, but to me it was strictly a desperate measure to save these overflowing plants.)

The fact that I don’t like weeding didn’t really come into play, but in hindsight, containers don’t grow many weeds. So far I have harvested (if you can really call it that) several green, yellow and pinot noir peppers, a few green beans and a couple of half-eaten tomatoes, which my local chipmunk enjoyed before I could. I love the idea of fresh food and, even more, the vague concept of free food.

I hope you too have had a bountiful summer, filled with fresh food but devoid of weeds.

Unfortunately, I had planted them on a bank just behind our tiny lot. As the melons grew bigger, they gained weight, and the natural law of gravity took over. I awoke one morning to find my crop of half-developed melons broken loose from their vines, lying at the bottom of the hill. I managed to salvage a couple, but I came to

>> When Steve Felix was 5 years old, his parents rented “Back to the Future.” This is the first movie he remembers watching — or at least, it was supposed to be.

As it turns out, the movie inside the box was a much lesser-known horse drama titled, “Lightning: The White Stallion,” starring Mickey Rooney. Fortunately, that one little mishap didn’t stifle Felix’s future love of all things film.

After studying corporate financial management at The University of Akron, Felix returned to his first love by joining the team at Akron Film+Pixel, a year-round social organization for creators and fans of film and games. He currently serves as its co-executive director.

While the organization’s annual film festival won’t return until 2013, “Akron Film+Pixel Night” will take its place this month. A Halloween-themed “Night of the Freakishly Short Animation Festival,” showing short films from around the world, will be held Oct. 25 at the Akron Art Museum.

Did you always want to be involved in the film industry? If not, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?

SF: There was a brief period when I hoped to become a taxi driver, probably inspired by the New York City setting of “Ghostbusters.” But from early teenage years, I was all about film.

How did you get involved with Akron Film+Pixel?

SF: I got involved right after attending the 2007 “Akron Independent Film Festival” at The University of Akron, which was run by the student filmmaking group, “The 2380 Project.” I showed up at their weekly meeting

and found a few others with an interest in growing the festival. Later that year, attorney Richard Honeck helped us incorporate as an independent non-profit.

What’s your favorite genre of film?

SF: The most true-to-life movies tend to be genre-bending, so that’s how I like them.

Science fiction elements are icing on the cake.

What is your favorite movie of all time?

SF: Today it’s “Lost in Translation.” I’m completely taken with Lance Acord’s naturalistic cinematography, Sofia Coppola’s spare writing, Bill Murray’s empathetic performance, and the shoegaze soundtrack [a subgenre of alternative rock]. But tomorrow I might say my favorite film is “Vertigo,” “Chungking Express,” “Days of Heaven,” “Heat,” “Rushmore” or “Back to the Future” (which I did eventually see a few dozen times).

What sets a good movie apart from a bad one?

SF: A good one tends to develop themes, locales and nuanced characters and then leaves room for interpretation. A bad one is likely to rest on tropes and always tells us what to think.

When you watch a movie, what things do you notice that normal viewers might not?

SF: I’m probably more attuned to editing and camera choices than most, at the expense of knowing any characters’ names or what exactly is going on in a complex plot. I’ll be into the tone and texture of a film whether it wants me to be or not.

Is every movie going to be in 3-D eventually?

SF: There are still technical problems with 3-D, like the need for glasses, but once those are overcome, yes, practically every movie will be 3-D. The technology and visual language of it are both in their infancy.

Why host the film festival in Akron, not L.A. or New York?

SF: The top few cities have become dangerously good at collecting creative people, and they already have diverse cultural offerings.

SF: The games industry is comparable in size to that of movies, but far fewer events take place for its community. Like films, videogames are a hybrid of many art forms but add choices and immersion that give them unmatched powers of self-expression.

Do you think Akron has the potential to become a frequent film location like Pittsburgh or Cleveland?

SF: Large indie productions could find diverse shooting locations in Akron, with minimal permit, traffic or fee difficulty. I’d love to see our old Art Deco buildings utilized. Hopefully filmmakers who visit the festival will keep the city in mind.

What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers? presents

SF: Keep projects on a need-to-know basis until they’re almost done. Talking about them dissipates the excitement that should go into finishing them. And upon finishing, it’ll be more fun to blindside us than to simply meet the expectations you’ve set up.

/ The Heritage Corridors of Bath host many first-rate attractions, but locals cherish smaller stops along the way. /

The byways along the Heritage Corridors of Bath boast walking trails, lessons in nature conservancy, fully operational organic farms, historical customs of country life and superbly acted plays. But the locals are happy to share a few lesser-visited spots you’re sure to love.

Tucked into the rising and falling roads and rich forest resembling New England backcountry is the Thomas Pierson house at 800 Wye Road. Likely constructed in 1837, today it’s home to The Bake Shop in Ghent, a full-service bakery. The pastries are priced just right.

Try a piece of blueberry pie with a scoop of ice cream, take it out to the porch and rest on a rocking chair. Enjoy a tranquil moment as you enjoy good sweets and listen to the sound of Yellow Creek as it flows nearby.

When you’re finished, walk around back to the two-story Octagon Bee House. Built by Pierson prior to 1859, the Bee House was once fully functional and housed honeybees. Today it’s a rare building, but octagon structures were popular in the U.S. and Canada from the mid19th century until nearly 1900. Records kept by the Bath Historical Society state that Pierson wintered 13 swarms of bees from 1858 to 1859. According to beekeeping experts at the University of Nebraska, a swarm of bees can have 1,500 to 30,000 bees. If the record book is accurate — and even if there were only a minimum of bees in each swarm — that’s still nearly 20,000 bees! The outside was painted just this summer, so it looks as good as new.

Within walking distance of the Bee House, drop in on the Woolen Mill on Granger Road, noted with an Ohio Historical Marker. Just head north, cross the Wye Road Bridge and hang a left. This mill functioned throughout the 19th century and is the oldest such mill still standing in Ohio. During the Civil War era, the mill processed up to 10,000 pounds of wool yearly to manufacture cloth and yarn. The sign also notes that in its heyday, relying on work at the mill was a risky proposition since the area was teeming with wolves that took their toll on the sheep population. Visitors aren’t likely to see any wolves near the mill today, and that’s all the more reason to get out and stretch your legs in Ghent. If you’re coming just to see the mill, there’s parking on site.

The National Register of Historic Places includes among its numbers Bath Town Hall, which was built in 1905. The building is restored and 14

functions as the Township Museum. Next to the building is the Bath Center Cemetery, which includes the grave of Alonzo Coffin (18161883), who, at one time, owned the Ghent Woolen Mill. The Bath Township Historical Society has pamphlets that offer a self-guided tour of these burial grounds. In fact, there are several cemeteries in Bath Township rich with historical relevance and beautifully kept grounds that are excellent reminders of those who have gone before us.

Another gem in the area is the old covered bridge at Everett and Oak Hill. To avoid construction, head east from Bath Center and travel up Riverview Road — past farms and barns, lovely old homes and the Ohio Erie Canal Towpath Trail. On Everett, you’ll find a large parking lot and a short walk to the bridge. Though it’s wide enough for a car, the bridge is blocked from traffic, unless you count horses and pedestrians. You won’t be rushed while walking the 115 feet to cross it. This bridge is another opportunity to visit a structure that harkens back to another age.

Bygone times and the alluring, natural world are as close to home as the byways of Bath Township. Get out there and investigate. You’ll be glad you did. Akron Marathon 20 2 Olympic Analyst Craig Masback to Receive Akron Marathon Ambassador Award Ceremony will take place Sept. 27.

Olympic running analyst Craig Masback has been chosen as the Akron Marathon 2012 Ambassador Award recipient.

Each year, the Akron Marathon, presented by Time Warner Cable, recognizes an individual who has demonstrated superior service and dedication to the running industry or who has earned respect within his or her community for exceptional accomplishments.

For the Akron Marathon’s 10th annual event, organizers have chosen Masback in recognition of his sustained contributions to the sport of running, including his representation of Team USA 10 times in international competition, his 1980 U.S. indoor mile championship and his former American record for 2,000 meters. Of the 30 sub-four-minute miles Masback has run, his fastest time was 3:52:02.

Masback’s contributions to the sport are not limited to his performances on the track. He’s also the former CEO of USA

Track & Field (USATF), has provided television commentary on various track and field events for NBC, CBS, ESPN and ABC for more than 30 years and is the founder of Inclyne Sports. He currently serves as the senior director of sports marketing for Nike’s Global Sports Marketing Division.

The Ambassador Awards ceremony will take place Thurs., Sept. 27 at Fairlawn Country Club. Masback will be available to meet attendees at the Health & Fitness Expo at the John S. Knight Center on Sept. 28.

With the help of his wife, Jeannine, and the support of many others, Steve began his journey to establish

Wanda Sykes Comedian and LGBT activist

She’s one of the funniest women in television and an open advocate for the LGBT community, but when it comes down to it, Wanda Sykes is just a typical mom, raising 3-year-old twins with her wife, Alex — well, unless you count the whole winning-four-Emmys thing.

Most famous for her roles on the CBS comedy, “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” and HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Sykes made her comedy debut doing standup in her hometown of Washington, D.C., and on Sept. 21, she’ll return to her roots as she performs on the Akron Civic Theatre stage. In 2009, Sykes was chosen as the featured performer at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where she was the first black female and openly LGBT person to perform. akronlife recently caught up with Sykes before she launched her crosscountry comedy tour.

girl?” But all of a sudden, I was starting to get paid, and everybody’s like, “Oh yeah, good job! Great!” If you asked them now, they’d say, “Yeah, we knew it the whole time.”

When did you know you wanted to be a comedian?

I think I always wanted to do something in comedy, probably since high school, I guess.

I was taking all of the acting and arts classes and everything, but I didn’t get to do it in college because I didn’t think my parents would pay for a theatrical degree. So it wasn’t until I was out of school and working for the National Security Agency, and I was just bored. I knew there was something else that I should be doing. So then I tried standup and just fell in love with it, and luckily it worked out.

What is a tougher role: Mother or comedian?

Mother by far. Being a mom, it’s like having hecklers during your whole show.

Who makes you laugh?

Anyone who falls down, it cracks me up. Oh man, I can’t help it, I’ll admit that. If “America’s Funniest Home Videos” is on, I’ll flip through, and a girl falling in a wedding gown — that’s hilarious.

Where do you find inspiration for your material?

Life. Especially now, I have three-year-old twins.

They’re a handful, but my comedy is usually grounded in something that really happened.

You’ve served as the voice for several cartoon characters. What’s harder: Doing voiceovers or doing standup?

Standup, by far. With voiceovers, they’ll say, “Cut! OK, let’s do it again,” or “Let’s try it this way.” And with standup, you can’t do a joke and mess up and go, “Hey wait a minute! Let me do it again!”

Were you the “class clown” growing up?

Not officially. I never wanted the title because I knew it would get me in trouble at home. My mother would say, “Are you clowning in school?”

I did make everyone laugh, but I wasn’t disruptive. I didn’t get in trouble.

How much of what you do on-screen is improvisation?

“Curb Your Enthusiasm” is totally improv. I don’t even know what’s going on until I get to the set, and then they tell me what the episode is about. But as far as the other shows, like “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” that’s scripted.

Did your family always support your comedy career?

Oh no, no, no, no. When I first said I was going to do standup, they thought I was nuts. And then after a few years, when I said, “Ok, now I want to quit my job and do it full time,” they were like, “Oh my God, what is wrong with this

How do you get through really hilarious scenes without laughing?

Sometimes you don’t. We’ve all ruined a lot of takes from laughing at each other. I know I crack Larry David up a lot, so when he laughs, it makes me laugh. And Julia Louis-Dreyfus and I, we crack up a lot.

At what point did you feel comfortable coming out to the public?

I guess when I did it. It’s weird because anyone who knew me, they knew I was a lesbian. But it was just during a protest for [Proposition 8], and I was at a rally, and I wasn’t scheduled to speak, but they asked me to come up and say something. And I did, and I just said what I said.

And one of my friends said, “Did you know you just came out?” I was like, “Oh really?” I didn’t know, I just said, “Oh ok.” And I didn’t really think anything of it until I got back to the hotel room, and I’m looking at CNN and on the scroll it says, “Comedian Wanda Sykes comes out.” And I’m like, “Oh my goodness, I guess this is a big deal, huh?” But when I did it, I was comfortable with it.

When did you realize you’d made it big?

More than 500 men and women in the Akron area fought heart disease and stroke May 8 at the 6th annual Go Red For Women luncheon at Quaker Station.

To date, approximately $160,000 was raised at the event for heart and stroke research and education.

Hail to the Chefs Gala “Hail to the Chefs,” a fundraising party held June 1, featured many of the chefs who were expected to participate in the Taste of Hudson event Labor Day weekend.

Getting Fresh with Good Food

There’s nothing better than picking a big, juicy tomato from your garden — unless it’s someone else doing the harvesting and using it to prepare a healthy feast, just for you.

I consider myself a lucky person. For most of

my life, I’ve had the benefits of flavor and health from food freshly picked from a garden.

My family always had a big garden, and we had relatives on family farms that provided us with fresh raw milk and naturally raised animal meats. (Of course, this was before industrial farming changed the family farm and the fastfood explosion took over America.)

As kids, we didn’t fully grasp the benefits we were taking for granted. My brother once traded our mother’s homemade bread for a slice of Wonder Bread thinking he got the better deal!

As an adult, I finally realized that when I eat fresh food, I feel good.

Recently, I sampled the work of four talented and dedicated local chefs whose key to preparing good food starts with using fresh ingredients and sourcing them locally whenever possible. Here’s what I discovered. Enjoy!

“I first became aware in 1980 that you can’t create a great meal without fresh ingredients,” says West Point Market’s Executive Chef Tom Loraditch. “At Beside the Point, our focus is to provide great customer service and really good food.”

Loraditch says the café gets most of its ingredients through a distributor in Cleveland who pays special attention to the quality, ripeness and freshness of the produce and meats.

The menu offers a wide variety of hot and cold sandwiches, salads and soups, and guests can even create their own salad or sandwich. In addition, there’s a selection of freshly made soups that are simmered from scratch.

Since West Point Market gets the best foods from all over the world, the store’s experts know the latest trends in the food industry.

The café’s menu changes with the seasons, and the store’s deli case offers prepared meals ready for carry-out that are made with locally grown ingredients.

Gillespie worked at a number of restaurants, but when he took on the responsibility of buying ingredients at Edgar’s in 2011, he was able to make freshness a priority.

This is reflected in Edgar’s seasonal menus.

Using foods in season that are locally sourced helps ensure the freshest ingredients. Gillespie gets his meats from local farmers and his seafood from suppliers who use the latest tracking technology, so he knows exactly when his seafood was caught. During the winter, the restaurant menu reflects different cultural comfort food dishes.

“I want my customers to be wowed and to wonder how we make the food taste so good,” he says. “I also want my customers to realize the connection between eating good, fresh food and their health.”

And for interested customers, he’s willing to share the details of the meals he’s created for them.

she’s lost around 150 pounds, written three books and opened Ms. Julie’s Kitchen in 2010 and Ms. Julie’s Café in 2012.

Her vegan restaurant and catering company specializes in low-fat, high-nutrition food made without meat, butter or other animal products.

She uses fresh ingredients from local farmers, specialty marts and her own gardens.

Costell is passionate about her work. This summer she started an urban farm to grow heirloom tomatoes, lima beans, English shelling peas and kale along with Swiss chard, spinach, lettuces, flax, sunflowers, onions and peppers.

Despite drought conditions in June and July, her farm is growing large quantities of fresh ingredients without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Her day begins at the farm, and she says she can feel the energy of the plants as she eats her breakfast fresh from the garden while picking ingredients for the day’s menu.

“I want my customers to feel the thought, energy, beauty and love that goes into each dish,” says Costell. “Fresh food makes the best dishes.”

The Curds and The Way Ricotta, feta and big dreams shape the lifestyle of local cheesemakers.

C

eramic sculptures sprout in clusters, and goats named Lucinda, Rachel and Kevin munch from a broad, grassy field on the 147-year-old Lucky Penny Farm in Hiram Township.

Owners Abbe and Anderson Turner have created this setting where personal and work interests blend to create artisan cheese, butter and the fruition of their dreams.

“It’s about a lifestyle choice,” says Anderson, a ceramic sculptor and painter who, in addition to farming and cheesemaking, is the director of galleries for the Kent State University School of Art. The Turners’ 1865 farm includes a milk house, bank barn, corn crib, tractor barn and granary and harbors pigs, hens, a llama named Darrell and, yes, goats. Here, the Turners’ children, Madeline, Lily and Ezra, feed, water and put goats to pasture, collect eggs from a hencoop and slumber under the stars at their home-based campsite.

“We made the move in 2005 to raise our children where they could play outside, explore, make mud pies — do what children should do,” says Abbe, a former public

radio development officer who swapped her suit and pumps for blue jeans and black rubber boots to mother her three children and dozens of goat-variety kids in this rural setting.

While the Turners’ goats generally provide a just splash of milk toward their 2,000- to 3,000-pound weekly supply for cheese making — the couple collects the bulk of their milk from two Ohio goat farms and two Ohio sheep farms — the small herd represents the impetus of Lucky Penny Farm and Creamery’s success.

“I believe in incrementalism — that small, consistent actions add up to something great,” Abbe says, explaining how her philosophy and routine collection of found pennies led to the farm’s name. Later during our interview, she scoops a penny from the seat of a cast-iron bench on the back deck of family’s mid-1800s Greek Revival upright and wing-style house and slips it into her pocket.

Pip, the Turners’ 16-year-old Siamese cat, sits patiently on the bench eyeing a plate of feta goat cheese, creamy sheep cheese and blue corn chips from which we nibble as Abbe describes Lucky Penny’s cheeses and the artistry of their creation.

“It’s beautiful work, making lovely cheese,” Abbe says. “It’s just a feeling for the right time to do the next step, cutting the curd, adjusting the temperatures, aging for the right amount of time to produce a balanced cheese full of flavor and freshness.”

After the Turners pasteurize vats of hormone- and antibiotic-free milk, they transform it into chevre, feta and ricotta cheeses at their Kent-based cheese and creamery operation. “It’s good, pure food,” Abbe says, noting that she, Anderson and fellow cheesemaker, Vermont Institute of Artisan Cheese-trained Jan Deuble, combine just four ingredients to make their cheeses: milk, salt, culture and rennet, a curdling agent.

Cheese lovers snatch up the Turners’ handmade delights Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lucky Penny Creamery, 632 Temple Ave. in Kent, as well as at Earth Fare, West Point Market and several other stores throughout Ohio and beyond. Whether it’s feta crumbled on a salad, chevre folded into pasta or herb-infused ricotta spread on flatbread, Abbe says possibilities for the cheeses extend as far as one’s culinary creativity.

table, the Turners say their dreams are continuing to unfold.

This month, they’re opening Farm Girls’ Pub and Grub, a new Main Street eatery in Alliance that features local and seasonal American comfort foods. Patrons can expect offerings such as burgers, craft beers, pulled pork sandwiches, threecheese macaroni and cheese and a signature dessert: smokeroasted apples with cajeta, the Turners’ award-winning goat milk caramel sauce.

“We’ve been working on this vision for many years,” Abbe says, regarding the restaurant, the farm and social causes, such as Recycle Pots & Pans in Kent, which provides gently-used cooking and dining equipment to domestic abuse victims and others in need so they can return to the family table.

“The family table is the glue,” Abbe says. “We provide kitchenware so families can cook, eat and stay together.”

Back at the farm, Anderson tosses another pruned apple tree branch into a fiery stack of others.

“Some days are more graceful than others. The fact is, it’s truly hard work,” Anderson says. “It’s about keeping the dream alive.”

Chevre Cookies Recipe created by Joanna Caley for Lucky Penny Farm Based on Italian ricotta cookies, these cake-like, light, eggless cookies invite personalization. Add lemon or orange zest to the batter and top with juiceinfused citrus glaze. Sprinkle crushed mint candies atop cookies laced with peppermint extract, or add cocoa powder to the glaze for a hint of chocolate.

Cookies: ½ cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 8 ounces soft goat cheese (chevre) ¼ cup milk 2 teaspoons vanilla ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking soda 2 cups all-purpose flour Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix all cookie ingredients together until the dough comes together in a ball. (It’s best to do this in a stand mixer if you have one, but it can also be done by hand.)

The dough will be sticky. Place teaspoon-sized balls on an ungreased baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. Bake for about 12 minutes or until the bottoms just begin to brown. Let cool for one minute on the baking sheet, and then remove to a rack to cool completely.

Glaze: ½ cup powdered sugar Orange juice Sprinkles or colored sugar

Smoke-Roasted Apples with Lucky Penny Cajeta Sauce Recipe created by Tamara Mitchell, of Dine-In Diva Personal Chef Service, for Lucky Penny Farm 6 crisp apples, such as Fuji or Granny Smith ¼ cup dark brown sugar ¼ cup unsalted butter ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon Vanilla ice cream Lucky Penny Candy Cajeta Sauce Also needed: 1-1/2 cups of applewood or hickory wood chips, soaked in water or apple cider for one hour and then drained.

Using a melon ball scoop or paring knife, core the apples from the top, creating a cavity to hold the filling, but not cutting all the way through to the bottom of the apple. Divide the brown sugar among the apples and place in the cavity of each, followed by the butter, and then sprinkle each apple with some of the cinnamon.

Prepare the grill for indirect grilling (either rake hot coals into two piles on opposite sides of the grill with a drip pan placed under the center, or on a gas grill, light one burner to about medium heat, and put drip pan under adjacent burner).

Place the wood chips over the coals or into a gas grill smoker box over the lit side of the grill.

Arrange apples on the grate over the drip pan (use rings made from coiled aluminum foil to steady apples). Adjust vents or temperature control to about 350 degrees.

Smoke-roast apples until tender and sides are soft when squeezed, about 1 hour to 90 minutes, depending on grill and temperatures.

Top each apple with a scoop of ice cream and drizzle generously with Lucky Penny Candy Cajeta Sauce.

In a small saucepan, combine the powdered sugar with enough orange juice to make a glaze to spread on the cookies (a couple of tablespoons or so). Stir over low heat until smooth and glossy, and then spread over the cookies. Quickly top with sprinkles or colored sugar.

Founded in 1839, Glendale Cemetery was originally called the Akron Rural Cemetery.

Winding avenues named for trees and graceful, varied architectural styles on memorials and monuments render it a quiet retreat within the city.

Records of the deceased reveal much of the past, including those whose fates were linked to the layout of the city or the limitations of medicine. More than a

few laid to rest here drowned in the city’s canals. Many of the women buried here from the 19th century died in childbirth.

And quite a few graves from the same period attest to the high mortality rate among infants and young children. In an age prior to the discovery of antibiotics, other frequent causes of death included scarlet fever, consumption (tuberculosis), cholera and influenza. Much can be learned of the past from Glendale Cemetery, which achieved placement in the National Register of Historic

Falling Into Fashion

/ Bath boutique owner shares tips for looking sharp and packing smart for autumn getaways. /

As summer draws to a close and the weather gets colder, it won’t be long before Akronites begin to seek refuge in more exotic locales. Whether you’re visiting family out of state, cruising the Caribbean or flying halfway across the world, you’ll need to pack the right wardrobe. And in this case, dressing right doesn’t necessarily mean dressing in a demure way.

“You’re only as old as you feel,” says Carolyn Leibowitz, owner of Coquette Boutique in Bath. “There’s no reason you shouldn’t be fashionable and why you can’t wear things that are ‘out there.’ You just have to do it in good taste and emphasize your best features.”

Leibowitz opened Coquette six years ago after leaving a career in interior design. If she could make a home look good, she thought, she could probably do the same for the person living there.

Her store has a loyal clientele throughout the Akron area and only stocks the latest trends in women’s fashion.

“You want something that’s unique to the area,” Leibowitz says. “You don’t want anything that looks like what you’d find at a mall, and you don’t want anything that’s over-shopped.”

Having traveled the world over, Leibowitz is an expert on packing the perfect suitcase. When she packs, she tries to stick to clothes made with lighter fabrics that will be more compact in her bag.

“It’s really your shoes that have the weight, so that’s the part that you should keep to a minimum,” she says.

Leibowitz suggests packing shoes you can wear multiple times, though that doesn’t mean they have to be black. She tries to pack colorful shoes that complement several outfits, and Leibowitz says you can’t go wrong with metallic shoes, one of this fall’s biggest trends.

Heed shows off her Desigual blouse as a standalone piece by pairing it with one of Coquette’s bold red necklaces.

“If you do it right, you should be able to fit a week’s worth of clothes in a carry-on,” she says.

While Leibowitz tends to dress for style, she also takes a practical approach to what she brings on her trips.

“I just got back from Greece, so we wore shorts and tank tops all day long, but then at night I’d put on a really cool sundress,” she

says, adding that for that trip she didn’t pack anything in the middle-range.

This approach to dressing is ideal for resort or cruise vacations, where Leibowitz says you can easily change into new outfits throughout the day. But if you’re visiting a destination where you’ll be away from the hotel room, she says it’s important to pack outfits that you won’t mind wearing for an entire day.

“After you’ve been walking all day long, you go somewhere to have a drink, and then you never change clothes,” she says. “Why spend all that time to go back to a hotel to change clothes?”

Leibowitz says even more important than packing the right outfits is having the confidence to wear them.

“It’s all about attitude,” she says.

1. Jeans or leggings – If you have a single pair of jeans or leggings, you can wear them multiple times with different tops, and no one will be any the wiser. You can dress them up with heels or dress them down with flats, and they’re versatile from day to night. Both items are perfect for the plane ride as well, especially if you’re headed out to sightsee straight from the airport.

2. A black shirt – A black shirt can serve as the perfect canvas for creating multiple outfits. You can mix and match jewelry with it, add a scarf or even throw on a jacket for a completely different look. Plus, you can add color in your shoes or purse to complement any other accessories you choose to wear. And of course, it doesn’t hurt that black slims your figure.

3. Jacket – No matter how hot your destination, you never know when you’ll find yourself in a cold restaurant or caught in a chilly breeze. A basic jacket can transform almost any outfit from casual to dressy.

4. Flats – When you’re on vacation, chances are you’ll be doing more walking around than usual. Flats are the perfect marriage of style and practicality; you’ll look good walking around town without punishing your feet.

5. Heels – They may not be the most practical shoe, but when you’re trying to look good, adding heels can give you that extra boost of confidence for a night out. Not only do they lengthen and slim your leg line, but if you don’t usually wear them, they’ll make your vacation an even more special occasion. Just make sure to bring along some Dr. Scholl’s if you’re prone to foot pain!

Fall Fashion Trends What to wear: This fall, Leibowitz says we can expect to see monochromatic colors such as burgundy and charcoal gray as well as striped fabrics. Also, the combination of dark blue and black, which was once considered a major fashion don’t, is making a splash on the runways — as long as the blue has enough contrast to stand apart from the black.

Also look out for pops of color in places you wouldn’t expect. Colored pants can make a fun statement when paired with a more subtle neutral top and shoe. Another major fashion trend is metallic clothing and accessories.

From shiny fabrics to studs and rhinestones, Leibowitz says she’s chosen fall merchandise that will make her customers say, “Wow.” What not to wear: Another big trend this fall are belts, both big and small, which Leibowitz says women should wear with caution. “They can make you look like a sausage, or they can make you look great,” she says.

“They cut you in half, and it breaks the line.

You just have to be careful of where it cuts you.”

There is no central repository of vaccination records, so it’s important to keep a good record of your child’s immunization history. When you enroll your child in day care or school, you may need to show proof of immunizations.

Your child may also need the record later in life for college, employment, or international travel. Some schools, doctors’ offices, and clinics may retain vaccination records, but usually not for more than a year or two.

Kaiser Permanente members who use My Health Manager on kp.org can view and print their children’s immunization records to provide to school or day care.* If you need to get started with an immunization record, for your child or yourself, instructions and sample records for documenting the administration of vaccines, including combination vaccines, are available at cdc.gov/vaccines.

Buena Vista Winery Sonoma Chardonnay and Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon Before there were vineyards in every valley north of San Francisco, before Napa and Sonoma were household names, before there was a California wine industry at all, there was Buena Vista. Sweet and Savory Pastry chef and teacher Nick Malgieri coming to Hudson and Canton.

>> When I phone Nick Malgieri in New York City, he’s busily cooking wax beans. I call him “Mr. Malgieri,” and he insists I call him Nick. I mention that I’m honored to speak with him, and he responds: “Millions of people do, all the time, so it’s no big deal.”

A few minutes into the interview, he pauses, and I can hear him chewing. He’s testing the wax beans to make sure they don’t get overcooked.

Malgieri may be known for appearances on the Food Network and with Julia Child and Martha Stewart, for his work at the WaldorfAstoria Hotel and Windows on the World, for writing awardwinning cookbooks, a syndicated column and countless magazine articles, but he remains, first and foremost, someone who simply loves to cook.

When I ask him if he considers himself a celebrity chef, he laughs.

“I was elected to the Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America a long time ago. That’s meant to denote people whose reputation and influence occur on a national level, but does that confer celebrity status?” he says. “It’s not the same thing when you’re stuck in front of your computer, writing recipes 32 hours a day sometimes.

It would be very hard for me to consider myself a celebrity.”

Early next month, Malgieri is teaching at the Western Reserve School of Cooking in Hudson and at The Cucina at Gervasi Vineyard in Canton, but it won’t be his first visit to the area.

“When I did my first teaching tour out of New York in 1985, Cleveland and Hudson were the second and third stops. Zona Spray (the founder of the Western Reserve School of Cooking) and I met at a convention through the IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals), and I was going to her school one to four times a year to teach.”

He also taught cooking classes at Buehler’s Food Markets. “That’s how I got into all of those places like Wooster, Wadsworth, Dover and Coshocton,” he says. “I once had the honor of being delivered in a Buehler’s floral delivery truck to another cooking school in Pittsburgh because there really wasn’t a practical way to get from one to the other.”

Currently serving as director of the baking program at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City, Malgieri knows his field, inside and out. I explain that, locally, we’d like to think this area is playing a larger role in the national culinary scene and wonder if, among the foodies in the Big Apple, Ohio is even on the radar. “‘On the radar’ has to do with being trendy, and being trendy is basically kind of stupid. It doesn’t mean you have good food; it’s doing something outrageous to attract attention,” he says.

“Certainly Ohio is not like going deep in the Midwest, where food has stayed a little bit less up-to-date. Ohio is practically the East Coast.”

Feeling downright giddy at the sound of that, I ask whether he considers cooking an art or a science, and I’m surprised at his emphatic response.

“The science part of baking is greatly exaggerated for a couple of reasons. First of all, people who fear baking say, ‘Well, you know, baking is very scientific,’ which translates to ‘Well, you know, it’s impossible to do,’” he says. “And the other part is that a lot of people try to give explanations of what happens or what you need to do with baking, with a lot of pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo. If real scientists were to explain it, you wouldn’t be able to understand what they were talking about. Scientific explanations should come from scientists, not cooks or bakers.

“You know, everything you do can be explained in terms of science. Tying your shoes is all about the physics of flexible flat planes. ... I always like to stay away from stuff like that. While it might make me sound like I know a lot to people who don’t know anything, you don’t gain anything by that. You don’t need to use terms that sound like you work in a lab in order to do it.”

Malgieri says his students often realize that a technique they thought was going to be difficult is really very easy to do. “You just have to see the right way to do it,” he says. “That’s 90 percent of what it takes, having somebody show you. Just like a mother or a grandmother (would say,) ‘If you want to make a pie, that’s not the right way to roll out the dough. It’s like this.’

“The other thing about cooking and baking that you can’t deny is that there are probably 500 different ways to accomplish the same thing for almost every process that exists. … It doesn’t matter, as long as you know a way to do it. That’s always been my feeling.”

I’m sure his local students will agree.

The French Coffee Shop akronlife staffers take their déjeuner at The French Coffee Shop, 1911 Bailey Road, Cuyahoga Falls Gluten-Free Mom tastes the French Onion Soup Gratinee and Side Salad Although I’ve never actually been to France, I’ve studied it, having taken too many years of French in middle school and high school. I’ve tasted Bûche de Noël, seen the coming-of-age flick, “La Boum” and can sing “Les Poissons” from “The Little Mermaid” with a certain joie de vivre.

Keeping that in mind, I found The French Coffee Shop a delightful gem hidden in a nondescript strip mall. While some might find the restaurant’s Paris-themed murals to be tacky, I’d prefer to think of them as “kitschy” — in a good way.

I ordered a side salad and a cup of the restaurant’s famous French onion soup gratinee sans croutons. The salad was nothing to write home about, but the soup … C’est magnifique! It was wonderful and worth the hype I read online. The rich broth was steamy, and the Swiss cheese on top was stringy and gooey, just the way I imagine it is when served in France. Next time, forget the modest cup, I’m ordering a bowl instead.

ing amount of talk about onion soup and/or crêpes that happened on the way to the restaurant. As one patron had posted on Urbanspoon.com: “If you don’t get the French Onion Soup, you’re an idiot!” So I got the Cream of Broccoli soup.

The soup made me feel like an idiot. You would, however, be surprised at what fresh-baked French bread and French mayonnaise can do to an irreverent hot dog. Things really do taste better when you add the word “French” to the name.

D IARY The one thing it doesn’t seem to work for is ambiance. The “French” in “The French Coffee Shop” does not connote “hip European aesthetic.” And that’s perfectly fine; it’s Cuyahoga Falls, not the French Alps.

Lil Circus Girl tastes the Chicken Crêpes My mother took my sister and me to The French Coffee Shop when we were little, and it was always a treat. If you used your imagination, you could almost feel like you were sitting in a small French bistro in front of your crêpe au chocolat.

Going there was like being transported back in time, from the scent of the French onion soup to the walls adorned with murals of Paris. I ordered chicken crêpes in a Béchamel sauce, smothered in melted cheese. It was good but lacked flavor. I took my

leftovers home and ate them for lunch the next day, and it was spectacular.

I must’ve had a wild imagination as a child because as an adult, I found the place more like a run-down American diner than a cafe in Paris, but there’s charm in that as well, I suppose.

Bread & Butter Blonde tastes the French Onion Soup Gratinee and French Dip Sandwich I’ve always been a French onion soup fanatic, but I also feel like I’m missing something great at a restaurant if I only get a cup of soup, so I eyed the French Dip — freshly baked bread and thinly cut steak accompanied with hot au jus. Soup or sandwich? The restaurant’s ‘light side special’ features a cup of soup and half a sandwich for only $6.

Voilà.

The French Dip came with French mayonnaise. I dislike mayonnaise … a lot, but today I braved the condiment. It’s hard to dislike this sandwich, which was juicy, rich and delicious, like a French Dip should be.

The pièce de résistance, however, was the French onion soup.

Once you dig through the top layer of gooey, melty Swiss cheese, you find the sopping French bread, followed by a sea of delicious onions — a perfect blend of ingredients, at a perfect temperature and portion.

We completed our meal with warm, sweet crêpes, topped with fresh blueberries. I’d suggest this quaint little lunch getaway to anyone looking for a good meal with good friends.

the banjo became a way for me to drop in to a new society. Cleveland-based banjo wizard Mark Olitsky once told me, “This is folk music — community music — and, for me, I can’t think of a nicer community to belong to.”

It’s the first Sunday of the month, and the Europe Gyro in Kent is packed.

There’s football on TV, but the majority of people are huddled in a circle of chairs near the front window not watching the game. The group ranges from gray hairs to elementary-schoolers.

Nobody will confuse Northeast Ohio as a hot bed of old-time music, but here you’ll find a small, thriving community that gets together for spirited jam sessions, frolicking contra dances, music festivals and house concerts.

You just have to know where to look.

It’s my turn to call one.

“How about ‘Needle Case’?” A collective nod, and the music begins again.

This monthly gathering harkens to an earlier time, not long ago, when people used to get together — face to face — to entertain each other. In this era of hyper-connectivity, we’ve become detached from such physical communities. We’re the Logged-In Generation.

Despite the ability to cyber-stalk everyone I know, a growing sense of seclusion overcame me a few years ago — which is when I decided to learn to play the banjo.

For many, the mere mention of the instrument evokes images of that scene in “Deliverance.” I’ve heard all the stereotypical jokes about gap-toothed hillbillies and barefoot country bumpkins playing “Dueling Banjos.”

What’s the difference between a banjo and an onion? No one cries when you cut up a banjo.

My pursuit to learn to play this five-stringed drum on a stick began in 2008, the last year of my 20s. Modern banjo-toting groups like Old Crow Medicine Show, Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Avett Brothers were my gateway to this drug. But now, string band music of the 1920s and ‘30s soon dominated my playlist. “Wagon Wheel” was replaced by “John Brown’s Dream.”

Old-time suffers from poor branding.

I have an addiction, and it’s called “old time.”

Most people upon hearing old-time music will call it bluegrass. Old-time suffers from poor branding. Sure, it has similar instrumentation and shares some of the same melodies as bluegrass, but it’s different.

Bluegrass is what happens when you polish all the burrs off old-time. With a rhythmic backbone of the banjo and the bouncing melodies of a fiddle at its core, this rollicking dance music has a raw edge. As the popular music of the Depression era, old-time suits our recession.

The real enjoyment of old-time music, however, is playing it. In a January 2002 article, Fortune Magazine writer Daniel Roth wrote, “Nothing says ‘dropping out of society’ like learning the banjo.” The truth is, learning september 2012

On the Northeast Ohio Old-Time Music Group page on Facebook, for instance, there are a couple hundred people with their fingers on the pulse of the local old-time scene.

In the Greater Akron area, highlights of this community include the annual Kent State Folk Festival, with its free workshops where you can learn to play the music. Join hands in Peninsula for monthly contra dances at the old Boston Township School House, while listening to Band Behind the Curtain, featuring world-renowned banjo maker Doug Unger, who lives just down the street. Finally, there’s the Kent Shindig, an old-time jam on the first Sunday of every month in Kent.

Connecting with people rather than avatars at these events has taught me the importance of community. You can follow your friends and family online, but your real social network isn’t on a website. The banjo was my key to unlocking this secret.
