My wife sends me care packages from home, including the local paper and magazines for me to enjoy and stay in touch with the world back home. I was reading the July issue of akronlife and enjoyed the “Best Of ” article. One category, Best Sunday Brunch, caught my eye. Tied for third place was Triple Crown Restaurant and the Chowder House. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Triple Crown in Munroe Falls is closed and has been for a few years? I’m originally from Ohio and live in Stow. Granted, I haven’t been home since December of last year, and I know a lot changes when you’re gone. Has it reopened under new management or previous management?

Despite the comic relief offered by our campy Q&A on pg. 48, our intention wasn’t to downplay the fact that Akron has real problems, but rather, to humanize the mayoral challengers and offer a fresh look at them — to give you some insight into their personalities, to make you laugh, think or change your vote (or, at the very least, encourage you to vote).

Though the job of mayor and the problems facing Akron are no laughing matter, many great leaders — from Abraham Lincoln to John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan — have had a great sense of humor — in good times and bad.

Like Dwight D. Eisenhower once said: “A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done.”

I received an unusual email in my online dating mailbox, and since I’m always on the lookout for an intelligent, educated man, I was excited. The email began with the “Top 10 Reasons You Want to Go Out With Me,” and it was laugh-out-loud funny. We volleyed back and forth a few times, and the emails included puns and puzzles. I was amused and hopeful — someone with intellect and humor! — so I agreed to meet him for a drink.

Dating is daunting enough, so having a “safe zone” is crucial.) Anyway, Top 10 agreed to meet me there.

On the day of the date, I sat at a table with a couple of girlfriends waiting on his arrival. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to me, Top 10 had used a photo that was probably 15 years old, so when he came into the bar, he was unrecognizable. He sat at the bar for 20 minutes before my girlfriends convinced me that it must be him. He was completely bald and considerably heavier than his photo.

Red flag No. 1.

Nonetheless, I invited Top 10 to the table to join our group, all of whom were leaving shortly (another important piece for daters: Enlist a support team), and we immediately noticed the next odd thing about him: After he spoke, he would thrust his hand into the air, palm up, for someone to slap him, high-five style. Huh. And when one of the group told him to grab a stool, he responded: “Simon didn’t say!” Everyone sort of looked at each other at that point. It was all becoming clear to me: Top 10 was a 12

middle school teacher who apparently had no idea how to speak to adults.

Red flag No. 2.

My friends began to leave, and despite my brain screaming that I should follow them, I stayed.

After he spoke, he would thrust his hand into the air, palm up, for someone to high-five him.

Top 10 talked a bit, drank a beer and then suddenly remembered that he’d brought me something, so he ran out to his car to get it. His gift: a bottle of wine, wrapped in a brown paper bag. He sat it on the table between us, and urged me to finish my beer so that we could go back to his place and open up the wine.

I sipped my beer even slower.

Right about then, a musician friend arrived, spotted me and came over, giving me a peck on the cheek, as is his style. Top 10 freaked out, grabbed the bottle of wine and pranced out of the bar with it. Think cat burglar, from “Pirates of Penzance.” My friend, who was standing nearby, looked at me and september 2011

said, “Dude, your date just left.” Thank you Captain Obvious.

Top 10 also stiffed me for his two beers.

(At that point, I crossed teachers off the list. OK, maybe just middle school teachers.)

When I got home an hour or so later, I found a lovely email in my inbox accusing me of “cheating” on him. Huh? I replied by telling him to pound salt, basically.

It wasn’t until the next day that I received a reply from him, which read: “Simon didn’t say!”

>> Pizza was Steve Neid’s kryptonite.

Until 1991, that is, when the fitness enthusiast/Ellet High School economics teacher took one of America’s favorite foods and overhauled it. The end result: Pizza Fit’n Free, a 7-inch personal-sized, fat, sugar and cholesterol-free pizza topped with 100 percent real dairy mozzarella cheese, weighing in at only 273 calories.

With good reason, Neid and his pizza have received a lot of press through the years, appearing on the cover of USA Today in 1991 and Newsweek in 1994. More recently, the 44-year-old (“I like to think of myself as being 22 twice,” he says) landed the dream marketing gig for his business: QVC (the largest TV station in the world, reaching 87 million viewers).

“QVC only accepts one in every 100 products they see. They also require all onair personalities to pass a training course as well as two separate impromptu air checks,” says Neid. “Fortunately for me, as a teacher, performing in front of an audience is what I do, several times every day, with a very tough crowd!”

As of press time, Neid has appeared on QVC five times, selling a whopping 100,000 pizzas.

What’s the best thing about being on QVC? SN: My mom is a QVC junkie, so her son is a now a rock star!

The worst?

SN: Driving six hours to Philly, two hours of pre-airing meetings, 10 minutes of LIVE TV, followed by the six-hour midnight drive home so I can teach the next day.

Did your interest in fitness play a role in starting Pizza Fit’n Free?

SN: Yes, but now it’s more about health. I take no medication and feel fantastic at an age when many of my friends are dealing 16

SN: Eight. I mean ate.

Is fat-free pizza easier to bench press because it’s lighter?

SN: Of course!

How did you go from economics teacher to business owner?

SN: I had my teaching degree and just started teaching in the Akron Public Schools when I got the idea for the pizzas, and the two have paralleled ever since. It’s a great fit, since teaching kids about economics is easier to do when you can relate it to something they know very well …

PIZZA! A student suggested you run your business on the Web. Did you reward him with a lifetime supply of free pizza?

SN: No, but he did receive an A in the class! It’s funny how, as a teacher, I find that I’m the one learning from my students. That was 1995, before anyone was buying anything on “the web.” Back then, I didn’t even know how to email. Besides Al Gore, not many did.

If I weren’t an economics teacher, I’d be: SN: Dressed up in a toga holding a Little Caesars’ sign on the side of the road.

How do you make a fat-free pizza taste good?

SN: Well, that was another matter! It’s taken years to get it right. I’ve been doing this for 20 years now, taking great pains to always keep improving our little pizza.

How many recipes did you go through before finding one that tastes good?

SN: Too many to count! The worst was our first. We baked some up and were eat-

ing them, and we didn’t realize until later we were also eating the wax paper that the crusts were packed on! I didn’t have a lot of food experience then.

What’s your goal for Pizza Fit’n Free?

SN: My partner and I want to open our model franchise store in Montrose this year. He’s been a great addition to my company. He’s a physician with a great entrepreneurial spirit and the same go-for-it attitude.

What’s your favorite food?

SN: Um, pizza? I still eat my pizzas at least once each week, usually Saturday.

If people eat your pizzas, can they quit exercising?

SN: I certainly hope not! People really need both to find nirvana! The real trick is to look forward to your next meal. It sounds easy, but most people ‘go on a diet’ and start eating foods they think are ‘healthy,’ rather than foods they actually like eating. Soon, their willpower gives out, and they end up breaking their diet or, rather, their diet breaks them.

What’s your favorite pizza topping?

SN: Turkey pepperoni. It tastes awesome and adds a few extra grams of muscle-building protein.

What do you consider your biggest achievement so far?

SN: All of this fleeting fame won’t last, but the work I do every day with Akron’s future generations will. My business is great, but I’m a teacher first and foremost. The job we do is so very important to our nation’s future.

Has anyone we might know taste tested Pizza Fit’n Free?

SN: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno and the late Gregory Hines, to drop a few names.

Who’s that Girl?

/ I think Casey Anthony was hiding out along my mail route. / By the time you read this, she’ll probably be >> long gone. (If it was even her to begin with. Though I’m pretty sure it was.)

>> It all started July 18th,

the day after Casey Anthony was released, when it seemed nearly everybody was talking about where Casey Anthony had gone. Was she in Ohio, Texas, California?

I’m ashamed to admit I was one of those people. I’d been glued to the TV during the trial because I’d been off work for 10 days due to minor surgery. My last day off was the day of the verdict, which was a good thing — since it would’ve been difficult for me to go back to work while the jury was still deliberating. Really, I was in that deep. My family was actually getting concerned!

Monday morning following her release, I was talking to my aunt on my way to work.

“Did you hear that Casey got on a plane to Columbus?” she asked.

“No, I heard she’s in Texas,” I replied.

My aunt disagreed. “I heard she got on a plane full of golfers flying to Ohio from Florida at 1 o’clock in the morning.”

My aunt sent me a text message not long after our conversation.

She’d seen on the news that Columbus was a possibility. Even NBC’s “Today” show reported that Anthony could be in Ohio, the home state of her parents.

Now here’s the part of the story where I had a newsflash all my own …

I’ve been a letter carrier working in Portage County for a really long time. It’s a very physical and rather mundane job. Barring the chase from an occasional dog or squirrel — and yes, once a groundhog! — our days are pretty routine. But this day was different.

“I heard she got on a plane full of golfers flying to Ohio from Florida at 1 o’clock in the morning.”

After delivering a swing of houses along my route, I was sorting my outgoing mail when I ran across a postcard featuring Columbus on the front being mailed to an address in Texas. It simply read: I told you I was going to Ohio.

Love you. The name wasn’t signed Casey, but why would it be? She’s hiding, right?

Could Anthony be hiding out in a house along my route?

The following day, when I approached the house that postcard came from, a man was walking out. He lives there alone and maybe has the occasional buddy september 2011

over to work on a car. I know, because I’m there every day.

Today, however, he had a girl with him. She had blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail. I told them to have a nice day, and she looked directly at me and replied, “You, too.” She looked just like Anthony, except blonde!

She probably thought she’d be safe hiding out in a little Podunk town in Portage County, Ohio.

Little did she know the mail lady had been off work recovering from surgery and had become absolutely hooked on her trial!

I didn’t want to stare, but how could you not!? If I’d had a camera, I could have taken a picture, sold it for six figures and be writ-

ing this from a beach somewhere.

(Sadly, that didn’t happen.) Even though my head was spinning, I kept moving — before I seemed strange to them.

I haven’t seen either one of them since.

Was it her?! It had been awfully hot that week, so it certainly could have been my imagination.

But I’m pretty sure it wasn’t. / Writer Amy Adkins continues to deliver mail and is keeping her eyes peeled for a return appearance by Anthony. She’s also saving up for a camera.

The Business of Style

/ What you wear to work communicates a message. Make it a good one. / From the financial industry to creative fields to everything >> in between, how to dress for work can be a challenge.

>> And it isn’t just about following a

dress code — or being comfortable. It’s about having a personal dress code. At the same time, what you wear communicates a message, without saying a word — and you want people talking about your performance on the job, not about what you’re wearing.

Much of the workplace dress-code confusion started with “business casual.” Can you tell us what business casual means?

It’s OK. Most people can’t.

Dress codes can be confusing. Chances are, if you work at an advertising agency, a marketing firm, a software company or in education, you’re in a creative atmosphere, so dress codes tend to be more relaxed and casual. For bankers and lawyers, formal business attire is still the norm.

And while some companies are doing away with dress codes entirely (which still doesn’t make yoga pants and tennis shoes appropriate!), others are reining in what employees can wear.

Regardless, you want to make a good impression, and that impression starts with being dressed “appropriately.” What follows are some guidelines to help you decipher various business dress codes.

Business Formal: This means wearing a suit, but women can wear slacks or a skirt. A tailored button-down shirt is most formal, but not a requirement. And this always means a tie for men. If your

dress code is business formal, it’s best to err on the side of more formal. But you can be creative and modern, as well. One of our clients is in the financial field and has been wearing a dark suit and pantyhose for ages. We encouraged her to choose lighter colors and fabrics. Wearing a bright-colored cardigan over a tailored shift dress or a softly pleated shirt with a structured jacket keeps her look fresh, modern and more approachable — yet still professional.

Business Casual: It started with “Casual Friday” — and has evolved to include a wide range of options. There are many definitions for business casual, but we prefer to define it as business dressed down, not casual dressed up. For example, break up those suit pieces and add a cardigan. But too often, business casual can turn into business sloppy (wearing pumps with casual khakis doesn’t cut it).

On the other hand, we’ve heard from clients that they “get grief ” for not dressing down enough. We encourage them to stick with their own personal style and dress code, and let’s see who gets that promotion.

Business Appropriate: This is the latest trend, which means dressing appropriately for the day ahead of you. So, if you’re seeing clients, a suit would be appropriate; if you’re going out into the field and crawling under equipment, jeans are appropriate.

The trick is having key pieces for your industry, personal style and body type.

Every piece should work together and be able to be worn multiple ways. A welledited, thought-out wardrobe can lend itself to everything from important meetings, business travel and those “I overslept” mornings.

“I was sitting on a bench overlooking a lake,” replies Alessa. “Bigger than this one, but the lights gave it the same kind of feel.

I asked for a sign, and when I did, the boathouse lights on the other side of the lake lit up all at once.”

Jake draws his hand back to his face and smells her perfume. “It sounds beautiful, Alessa. Did you think that was a sign right away?”

“Yes, I think so,” she says, looking into his eyes before continuing. “I’ve never told anyone that story before.”

Jake smiles and leans his head in toward hers before giving her a quick kiss on her forehead and turning his attention back out to the smooth, black water. “Thank you,” he whispers.

5th annual Akron/Canton Dinner of Champions The Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society honored Philip H. Maynard of The Maynard Family Foundation June 14 at the 5th annual Akron/Canton Dinner of Champions. Maynard received the Norman Cohn Hope Award for his ongoing commitment to volunteer leadership and philanthropy.

The evening’s theme, “Life in the Fast Lane – On the Move Toward a World Free of MS,” was exemplified by a showcase of some of Maynard’s favorite cars, and local health providers displayed devices that help people with MS stay mobile.

Proceeds from the event are being used to support MS research and programs for people affected by multiple sclerosis.

The Hudson Wine Festival Held July 15-17, the Hudson Wine Festival attracted well over 7,000 people to downtown Hudson, where they sampled fine wines for a great cause: Pawsibilities, the Humane Society of Greater Akron. Guests also enjoyed music, food and more than 40 vendors and artists throughout the weekend, as well as the new Paws on Parade kickoff event and a VIP Preview Party at Lake Forest Country Club.

our house, the A.M. is a blur of backpacks and sneakers and car keys so, for us, breakfast-fordinner is more common

than breakfast at breakfast.

After a long day, I’ve been known to whip up a huge omelet for all of us to share or one of my childhood favorites, Toad in the Hole.

(Cut a hole in a slice of bread, and lay it in a buttered pan. Crack an egg into the hole, and fry it up, baby!)

My whole family loves breakfast food.

Myself included.

Oreo Flap Jacks at Mike’s Place (Kent): Don’t let the whipped cream rosettes fool you, this is no girly meal. When we went for dinner, my husband eagerly accepted my challenge to try these three fluffy buttermilk pancakes speckled with chunks of crunchy Oreo cookies. There were a lot of flap jacks on that plate, but my husband — being a food humanitarian — insisted on eating it all because “pancakes don’t reheat well.” And then he talked about them all the way home and the next morning. In addition to a hilarious menu, a full-size replica of a Star Wars Xwing fighter out front and a burger bar with

7 WAYS TO COOK AN EGG

There are over 100 ways to cook an egg, but let’s start with these seven basic techniques — which should be in every early-riser’s arsenal.

Sunny-Side Up Crack the egg into a pan, and cook only one side of the egg. The other side is slightly cooked by the heat below, but the yolk remains runny.

Soft Boiled Place the egg in boiling water for a short period of time, cooking the egg white slightly and leaving the egg yolk liquid.

Poached Bring water to a boil, and crack the egg into the simmering water. Cook until desired results are achieved.

Over-Easy Start with a pan that has a non-stick coating or has been sprayed with a non-stick spray.

Crack the egg into the pan. Fry until whites are solid and sufficiently cooked. Flip over, and cook until a thin layer of white forms (the yolk is still liquid).

Place the egg in boiling water, and cook for 12 minutes or more, resulting in an egg with hard whites and yolk.

The Bubba at Twig’s Diner (Barberton): How many servers does it take to deliver The Bubba to a patron at Twig’s? Four — one to carry the pizza pan loaded with food, one to honk a horn, one to clang a bell and one to get patrons psyched about the gastronomic challenge about to be attempted. For $15.99 (plus a sharing charge if two people tackle it), the meal includes biscuits with sausage gravy, French toast, pancakes, two strips of bacon, sausage links, four eggs, home fries and toast.

The only consolation: It’s not timed. The Bubba gets ordered several times a week, and those who clear their tray get their photos taken and displayed as a challenge (or, perhaps, a warning) to other patrons. If you’re lucky, Twig will cook it up for you herself, regaling you with stories about being named Mrs. Summit County U.S. six years ago.

The “Every Day Is Christmas” Egg Strata with Mystic Potatoes at the Enchanted Café (Barberton): When my family and I visited this café over the summer, we immediately noticed the Christmas tree in the front window. We’ve all got neighbors who don’t take down their decorations till spring (or ever), so we wondered, is that what’s happening here? Once we got to our table, the proverbial light bulb went off as we realized the tree complements the owner’s collection of elves that frolic throughout the restaurant (statues on the counter, murals on the walls and a few hiding on the rafters, along with a couple of fairies). The restaurant’s “grandma” soon brought us a plate with two small diamonds of baklava for me and my husband and two Tootsie Roll Pops for our kids to have “after they eat a good meal.” And it was a good meal. The Egg Strata with Mystic Potatoes is a 3-inch-tall egg and sausage casserole that’s light and fluffy on the inside, golden brown and crunchy on the outside (I was lucky enough to get an “edge”), with creamy potatoes that have a crispy cornflake topping. 559 Norton Ave., Barberton, OH 44203, 330-753-5837

The Better Day Waffle at Wally Waffle (Akron): In 1975, John Mazzola and his brother, Russ, opened the first Wally Waffle. John’s grandsons/ current co-owners Josh and Justin Miletti say that before opening, their grandfather experimented with all sorts of crazy waffle batters.

“Most of them were awful, according to my grandmother Rosina,” says Josh. “But one day in his home kitchen, he added his oat bran and raisin batter to another batter he’d been working on, and it was an instant hit with the whole family.” Rosina told her husband that compared to the previous day’s concoctions, he was having a much “better day” — so that’s what he named the waffle, which is made with carrots, apples, raisins, pecans, coconut and pineapple and topped with banana. “Of course, the implication is that our customer will have a better day after enjoying the waffle,” Josh says. “And it usually works.”

/ When it comes to running marathons, Ernie Pouttu and Donna Serdinak are old pros. /

Pouttu and Donna Serdinak have run all eight Akron Marathons since the race began in the fall of 2003. And they haven’t let their age stop them from pursuing their dreams. >> 56-year-old Pouttu is a man who likes to set goals and enjoys a good challenge. The president of Akronbased Harwick Standard Distribution Corp. ran his first marathon when he was 27.

“I wanted to do something that was deemed to be not easy,” he says. “So I signed up for the 1982 Cleveland Marathon.”

“Years ago, I overheard a woman tell her two friends, ‘There goes Ernie. He’s one of my favorites.’ ” – Ernie Pouttu, member of the Akron Marathon’s Founders Club At 30, he set a personal goal to run 40 marathons by the time he was 40.

“Speed was not my thing. Running the marathons and completing them was,” he says. “So by my 40th birthday, I had completed my 40 by 40.”

After Marathon #41, he stopped running for 7½ years because his goal had been met, and he felt he had nothing else to shoot for. Then he met Steve Marks in Leadership Akron’s Class IX

and learned that Marks was organizing the first Akron Marathon.

“I thought to myself, ‘I can do another marathon,’ ” he says.

And he did, and still does today.

Marathon training, he says, isn’t his strong suit, so in May 2008, he joined

up with a group of runners — The Canal Rats — who run several times a week.

“My typical training [is] to try to do a 15-mile run weeks before the marathon as a ‘confidence booster,’ and then go do the run,” he says.

Dad’s my hero.

He can fix everything from hot water tanks to BB guns. My son has the only two-story tree fort in the neighborhood thanks to him. He’s my go-to guy. Ask him about the big Cleveland game in ` 64, stocks, deep frying turkeys-he knows it all. But he doesn’t get around like he used to.

He’s getting older and he can’t fix that. Wonder what he wants for the future? How do I bring it up?

Age, Pouttu has found, hasn’t hindered his ability to run, although his health did take an unexpected turn on April Fools’ Day 2010, just months before the Akron Marathon. Pouttu’s dog took off after other dogs, and when Pouttu sprinted after his canine, he fell, disattaching the hamstring muscles on his right leg.

When they found out, the Canal Rats told him he shouldn’t attempt to run the marathon.

“My wife, Mary Kay, knew I would try and would likely finish,” he says. “I did.”

Running the Akron Marathon is a source of great pride for Pouttu, and he enjoys the crowds that come out to cheer on the runners.

“Years ago, I overheard a woman tell her two friends, ‘There goes Ernie. He’s one of my favorites,’ ” he says. “I enjoy reaching Highland Square where I exaggerate my stride or wave to both sides of the street or turn completely around. Having fun is what I enjoy about running.”

And what does he tell other seniors who are considering running the Akron Marathon? ”Do it, try it. It’s not hard,” he says. “Look at me, I’ve done it, and I know if I can, you can, too.”

The 67-year-old used to do long-distance bike riding with her husband, as well as long-distance running but, “as I aged, I found it was getting to be too much to do both, so I needed to choose my sport,” she says.

Over the years, she has run many marathons, including ones in Akron, Boston, Houston, Tampa, Atlanta, Cleveland and Columbus, and the Marine Corps Marathon.

A former AT&T employee, Serdinak retired in 1994 and briefly moved to Florida.

When she returned to Ohio in 2002, she became reacquainted with her Saturday running group and heard the buzz about the upcoming Akron Marathon.

“I didn’t run a marathon during the years in Florida. What better way to restart than to run an inaugural marathon in my hometown,” she says.

Serdinak looks forward to training, and she has followed the same 16-week regimen for years. It starts with a 40-mile-a-week base: She runs five times a week — two short runs, two medium distance runs and one 14-mile run on Saturday. During the first 12 weeks, she builds up to 54 miles a week with a long run of 24 miles. The following three weeks, she starts backing down the weekly mileage to 50, 42 and 32 with long runs of 20, 14 and 10. In the final week before the race, she only does short runs.

For first-time marathoners, she suggests a lot of hill training: “Try running up Garman Road and through Sand Run Park during a couple of the long training runs.”

There’s a mystique, she says, about being able to say she still runs marathons at her age. “People who don’t run always ask how far a marathon is, and when I say, ‘26.2 miles,’ they are so surprised.”

“My biggest challenge is trying to run the same time every year. I don’t want to let age be a reason for slowing down,” she says.

“Each year, it’s more of a challenge to maintain that expectation.”

In spite of a broken metatarsal and a small meniscus tear in her left knee, she says she has “been very fortunate health-wise.” And, she has learned to adapt her strides during the race.

“I used to start out way too fast when I was younger and then try to hang on until the finish,” she says. “I now go out with a pace team and try to stay with the team. I’ve found that I feel much better at the finish.”

What keeps Serdinak motivated during the marathon?

“I think of my husband’s smiling face at the finish line,” she says. “He’s always so proud of me when I finish. He always says, ‘You’ve got to do it for the old folks.’ ” / Writer Abby Cymerman is the assistant editor of akronlife. She only runs when being chased.

Meet Hal Higdon on Sept. 23

He ran eight times in the Olympic Trials and won four world masters’ championships. One of the founders of the Road Runners Club of America, Higdon also was a finalist in NASA’s Journalist-in-Space program to ride the space shuttle.

He has served as a training consultant for the Chicago Marathon and Chicago Area Runners Association and also answers questions on his Virtual Training Bulletin Board, offering interactive training programs through TrainingPeaks. At the American Society of Journalist and Author’s annual meeting in 2003, the Society gave Higdon its Career Achievement Award, the highest honor given to writer members. He also sells and exhibits his Pop Artstyle paintings.

Higdon and his wife, Rose, have three children and nine grandchildren.

Shoe-Shopping 101: Putting Your Best Foot Forward 1. Slow and steady wins the race

Do your research before heading to the shoe store. A podiatrist can examine your feet to see if they’re high-arched, flat or normal-arched. Taking the time to learn your foot type now will save you plenty of pain later.

2. Ask the pros

Buy your shoes from a running specialty store. The experts there will understand your needs and can offer suggestions to give you the best fit.

3. Become a socks addict

Bring a pair of your running socks with you to wear when you’re trying on shoes.

It will give you a more accurate feel.

4. Measuring up

Your feet are rarely the same size, and over the years, they often change size — so make sure you have your feet measured every time you get new shoes. Stand while your feet are being measured, and for comfort’s sake, buy for your larger foot.

5. Three letters, one goal

When you’re shopping for running shoes, especially those worn for long-distances, stay focused on these three letters: CLF. Your shoes should be Comfortable, Lightweight and Flexible. If they hurt in the store, imagine how much pain you’ll be in after 26.6 miles!

6. Small strides = big rewards

Don’t break in your shoes on a long-distance run. Wear them on a short run and slowly increase your mileage.

7. Two pairs are better than one

Once you find shoes you like, consider buying two pairs and alternating them on your runs. You’ll get more life out of them, and they’ll become a valuable investment. Plus, the time off will give your shoes a chance to dry out and will reduce your risk of athlete’s foot. Moneysaving tip: Stock up on old shoe models when they go on sale.

8. Know when to hang it up

Training for a marathon puts a lot of wearand-tear on running shoes. They might still look great on the outside, but they won’t provide adequate shock absorption, cushioning and stability. Avoid injuries to your feet, legs and joints by replacing your shoes every 300 to 400 miles; you can keep track in your training log.

9. Time for a comeback

When it’s time to retire your running shoes, don’t toss them so they end up in a

landfill. Instead, consider giving them to an organization that will recycle them.

Healthy Tips

These are just a few of the comments made by women experiencing incontinence issues. Many manage by staying close to home, restricting extracurricular activities and wearing disposable undergarments.

The good news is: It’s not necessary to manage incontinence. Medical treatment is available from professionals — in this case, urogynocologists and urologists — specifically trained to diagnose the causes of incontinence, who offer highly effective treatments to help women regain freedom and flexibility to get back to living their lives. They understand — and they can help.

Causes of incontinence vary, but often are linked to Pelvic Floor Disorder (PFD). The pelvic floor can be damaged by chronic disease, the birthing process, repeated heavy lifting, obesity or surgery. When these muscles are weak or damaged, incontinence may occur. Other types of PFDs include a prolapse (a falling or slipping out of place) of the uterus, bladder, vagina or rectum; emptying disorders; an overactive bladder; or pain. Diagnosis usually includes a review of symptoms, medical history, physical examination and/or record keeping.

Lettuce Be Honest!

And yes, chefs have had to cater to the American palate (it’s called “staying in business”), so they do serve iceberg wedges at a variety of Northeast Ohio restaurants.

And don’t even get me started on the “triple washed” printed on salad mix bags. Triple washed by whom? And are we referring to the bag itself or the greens it contains? I’m not a germ-a-phobe, but honey, wash those greens yourself and then you won’t be reading about how sick you almost got from some such harvested mixture.

Such a wide variety of lettuces are available — frisee being my least favorite. You’ve seen it, member of the chicory family; it’s small and tender with delicately lacy green leaves and a white center with a mild bitterness. For my tastes, frisee is one of those greens best left on the produce rack for kids to walk by and say, “Hey, doesn’t that look like Uncle Ernie’s hair after our July 4th fireworks extravaganza?”

When it’s served to me and I dutifully eat it (growing up in the “eat what’s put on your plate” era), I know what a cat feels like when she’s trying to rid herself of a hair ball, except I’m choking to get it down.

Which brings my palate ’round to iceberg lettuce. Much maligned, its crunchy, tasteless sturdiness is in a category by itself.

You have to take pity on iceberg lettuce, but I do believe it’s having the last leafy laugh on us!

Chefs constantly criticize it: “It’s flavorless and lacks character.”

Nutritionists lambaste it: “Mostly water, it has very, very little nutritional value.”

But here’s the wedge: Iceberg is popular with Weight Watchers, since it’s virtually fat and cholesterol free — a medium-size head contains only about 70 calories. And we crazy Americans continue eating more iceberg lettuce than any other variety, about 22 pounds per person, per capita, according to the USDA — with Romaine running a distant second with 8 pounds per person per capita.

At home, I serve it mixed with a variety of other greens. I call it my own messin’ mix (you know, like mesclun but with more attitude).

It’s the “duh” factor of salads. For more nutrition, mix iceberg with greener greens, such as spinach or arugula, or with some red leaf lettuce. Top your home salads with toasted almonds, some dried cranberries or cherries, some sunflower seeds, and maybe even some fresh pitted cherries or blueberries when they’re in season. Work with me here. All these things are so readily available and require so little effort 60

I’m curious how this wedge trend got started. Chances are, it was simply easier to cut a wedge out of a round head of iceberg than tear it apart.

Oh yes, and it’s the restaurant embellishments that often make that iceberg wedge so appealing …

Bricco (Akron) serves an Iceberg Wedge in full or half size on their salad offerings.

Embellishments include baby tomatoes, prosciutto, hard boiled egg, crumbled bleu cheese (which seems to be more often than not the cheese of choice for iceberg aficionados), and a roasted garlic white French dressing.

Beau’s Grill (Fairlawn) offers up a Wedge of Lettuce (the “I” word is never mentioned on the menu) with bacon bits, chopped tomatoes, egg, bleu cheese and a sesame French dressing.

B Spot (various locations) offers up a Wedge BIG Salad (again, the “I” word isn’t mentioned) with bleu cheese, avocado, bacon and shaved onion.

So, Mad Platter aficionados … stand up for what you love! Poopoo those critics who claim that iceberg lettuce has about the same nutritional value as sticking a blade of grass between your teeth, and look to the Harvard School of Public Health fact sheet that rightfully says: “The key lies in a variety of different vegetables and fruits that you eat.” Duh! Sonoma Coast Viognier/Cool Climate Pinot Noir

>> In the latter part of the 1800s, Oakley in Contra Costa County, California was a booming farming community with thousands of acres of orchards and healthy vineyards — and is where Fred Cline’s maternal grandfather of pump-and-spa fame, Valeriano Jacuzzi, called home.

On summer visits to his grandparents, Fred learned both the love of agricultural life and the mysteries of vinifying grapes into wine. These lessons led Fred to obtain a degree in Agriculture Management from U.C. Davis.

In 1982, with an inheritance from his grandfather, Fred founded Cline Cellars near Oakley. Here, he preserved and restored many ancient vine sites to their rightful reign as premier California wine lands.

In 1991, Fred and his wife, Nancy, relocated the winery from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County on a historic 350-acre estate with new vineyards and facilities. While much of the cool Carneros region is planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot, Fred pioneered the planting of Rhône varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.

Fred’s innovation and experimentation led to producing rich, distinctive Rhône-style wines and intense, flavorful Zinfandels for which he has garnered enormous acclaim. His Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast is just one of the latest gems added to Cline’s diverse family of wines.

Sonoma Coast Viognier came to California by way of France’s Northern Rhone Valley and is a tricky wine to make. Its natural low acidity requires it to be picked at just the right moment. With this blend,

Cline chose grapes from vineyards that are eight to 20 years old, with the majority (75 percent) coming from Mendocino. Vines basked in the daylight sun and were cooled at night, contributing to the wine’s full-body weight. This wine is loaded with pineapple, peach and apricot flavors, accented by floral and citrus notes.

Perfect as an apéritif with Gruyère or Camembert, this wine also pairs exceptionally well with curried shrimp or Asian fusion cuisine.

Cline’s new Cool Climate Pinot Noir comes from vineyards that are planted in Petaluma Gap blocks of the Sonoma Coast appellation and on his estate in Sonoma-Carneros on a southwest-facing hillside. The PetGap vineyards vary from shallow hillsides to deeper, richer valley plantings. The Carneros vineyards are planted in rocky soil and produce a small but intensely flavorful yield. Bright red fruit characteristics emerge along with deep color, lush body, and touches of vanilla and spearmint, followed by delicate strawberry flavor.

This is a food-friendly wonder child that can stand up to lamb or roast beef, yet won’t overpower lighter fish or pasta dishes.

The Cline Viognier retails for around $13, and the Cool Climate Pinot Noir retails for around $20. Foodies will be able to enjoy a variety of cuisines during the first ever Downtown Akron Restaurant Week, Sept. 12-15. During this four-day event, participating downtown restaurants will offer specialty prix fixe dinner menus. (“Prix fixe” is a French term that means a complete meal offered at a fixed price.) These reasonably priced menus will be posted at www.downtownakron.com/restaurantweek at least two weeks before the event.

Developed by the Downtown Akron Partnership Junior Leaders Board, the goal of the event is to encourage local residents to explore the burgeoning downtown dining scene and to try something new.

The County Fair / Corn dogs and cows at the Portage County Fair /

>> No matter where I’ve lived, I’ve always

made the annual trek to the local county fair.

(Did you know Ohio has 88 county fairs?)

Growing up, the Portage County Fair was what we looked forward to every summer, and I loved it for the Ferris wheel, the Spider and the games. As a teenager, I loved it as a place to go on dates and hang out with friends. As an adult, I love it as a place where my friends, neighbors and our children can showcase their talents — and as a lingering slice of Americana. It’s like stepping back in time.

I love to wander the grounds, petting the cows and horses, looking at the vegetables and flowers, admiring the 4-H projects and watching the demolition derby (kind of ).

My children have spent entire summers raising pigs, sheep, chickens, calves and rabbits and working on any other project that caught their eye when the new 4-H catalog came out. I believe it’s the best experience a child in this fast-paced world can have.

In these days of mass-produced and massmarketed everything, it’s rare to see truly homemade, home-grown items. But at the county fair, even ugly vegetables get their day in the sun.

After follow-up surgery and therapy, Dale can now repair and ride the motorcycles he loves. “I like bringing an old engine back to life,” he said. “Just like Summa did with my arm. They took that cancer out of there, and they brought me back to life.”
