Happy 100, KSU

W

hen my parents, my two-year-old sister and I toured Kent and the KSU campus, we were just looking for a place where we could move that would accept our dog, Blackie.

At age 12, I wondered why they had so many rooftop swimming pools. I had never seen so many tall buildings with ladders curling up and over the roofs like the ones I’d encountered on countless swimming pools and docks. “Strange place, this Kent State University,” I thought. “Must be a lot of swimmers that attend here.”

Before that time, my family moved all around the country because of my father’s job—first in the military and then as an operating engineer with a company that laid the big gas pipeline from Texas to New Jersey. Over the course of many years, I went to school in about every state in between. For most kids, the constant moving and changing schools two or three times a year would be traumatic in the extreme. But I loved it. In fact, I thrived on new friends, new adventures and new experiences.

This move to Kent would be no different, I assumed, and we would move on in a few months. I attended the 8th grade at Franklin Elementary and stayed the whole year.

I played on the basketball team, lettered for the first and only time in my life, made friends, rode my bicycle and did what most 12- or 13-year-olds did—enjoyed life.

The campus was often our playground as we terrorized faculty and students with our bikes and go-karts. It didn’t

occur to me that the very next year I would be part of it since Franklin graduates were directed to Kent State University High School. (Yes, KSU ran a full K-12 school for many years as a place to train their student teachers. It went back to the days of the original Kent Normal School, which was more or less a teachers’ college.) Classes were held on campus in Franklin Hall, next to the library. We ate in the student union, rummaged through the library and made life a living hell for all but the most unyielding student teachers. By the time I realized that we were not going to be moving anytime soon, I adjusted by getting bad grades and goofing off.

Being on the campus all the time left me with no doubt that I would go on to college. After graduation, I walked to another part of campus and registered for fall quarter at the university. I came on board when KSU was celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The university is now 100 years old (and I feel as ancient).

Thinking about it made me realize what an integral part of my life KSU has been. I am grateful for the superior education it provided me—from the beginning of high school and throughout my college years. I was very lucky to be placed there at a time in my life when it really mattered. I don’t know if my parents were thinking about that when we moved here looking for a place that would accept our family dog, but it worked out wonderfully.

Thank you Kent State University for all you have given me. I won’t be around to celebrate the 200th or even the 150th, but I will try to pass on the torch of learning you lighted for me and which still burns bright today. Happy 100th birthday!

This year’s wine tasting and silent auction featured over 150 wines, beers from around the world, delicious hors d’oeuvres and light entertainment. Guests bid on auction items donated by local businesses and artists, and proceeds benefitted the artist awards, children’s area and performing arts program.

Ronald McDonald House Ronald McDonald House of Akron celebrates 25 years

T

his year marks the 25th anniversary of the inception of Ronald McDonald’s House of Akron.

Ronald McDonald House not only offers families affordable shelter while their loved ones receive treatment at Akron Children’s Hospital, it also provides emotional, spiritual and mental support during intensely difficult times. Laundry service, meals and activities are just a few of the amenities RMH provides.

Though RMH officially opened its doors January 13, 1985, the 25th anniversary celebration continues with various events throughout the year. On July 18, RMH hosted a Street Fair Celebration to honor volunteers.

Planned by board member Nancy Walker-Gerbetz, the Street Fair featured music by the Archbishop Hoban High School steel drum band, an oldfashioned photo booth, food by Moe’s

Restaurant, an ice cream cart and, of course, a visit by Ronald McDonald. Nearly 350 guests were in attendance.

In addition to a working board as well as student and occasional volunteers, the organization has 120 core volunteers who cover three four-hour shifts (9 a.m. to 9 p.m.) daily—including weekends and holidays.

Bras Across the Crooked River After collecting bras from 18 donation sites in three counties, the Celtic Club will be unfurling them in downtown Kent on Sept. 11 from noon-9 p.m. in a show of force in the fight against breast cancer.

Anyone making a donation to the American Cancer Society that day will receive a donated bra, an American Cancer Society memory card and a pink clothespin they can attach to a rope strung across the bridge that spans the Cuyahoga River there during the Kent Irish Festival. The event will take place at Home Savings Bank Plaza.

Afterward, bras will go to Breast Oasis, a non-profit that helps battered women and victims of natural disasters.

S

cott Devol has never taken a baking class in his life. Most people might be surprised to learn that about the owner and sole cake designer of & Eat It, Too! in Canton. But for Devol, cooking has been a passion that has slowly developed. “As a kid, I cooked pudding—cooked because they didn’t have instant back then,” he says.

Devol went on to bake cakes for his own kids, now 26 and 30. That evolved into a 50th anniversary here, a baby shower there—all leading up to when Devol opened his dessert business a little more than three years ago.

As a self-taught cake designer, Devol admits he sometimes run into a few snags along the way. “If there’s something I don’t know, I look it up on the net,” he explains. “There are several different cake sites and thousands of videos on YouTube.”

People might also be surprised to learn that this is more of a hobby than a career for Devol, who has spent the past 36 years as a full-time steelworker.

While some would say he has since doubled his workload, Devol enjoys just being able work out of his home at his own leisure.

Most fulfilling parts of the job: Initially, it’s see-

ing customers breathe a sigh of relief that “the cake thing is done.” But, of course, he also enjoys seeing the finished product.

Difficulties of the job: The stress that comes with

delivering the cakes to the venue in perfect condition. He says traffic lights are the most nerve-wracking thing because when they change, he doesn’t know if he should run them or hit the brakes.

Favorite music: He’s still a Top 40/pop music fan today, but

ReStore

ith its new location at 2301 Romig Road in Akron, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore has gained almost three times the size of the old store. And it’s now in one centralized location with the organization’s offices and warehouse.

“This is a more convenient location for people,” says Rochelle Fisher, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Summit County. As a result, Fisher says she’s noticed an increase in store donations.

The ReStore has a great mix of new and gently used household items, from building materials and plumbing supplies to appliances, cabinets, lighting, paint, sinks, toilets, bathtubs and more. Most items are donated by community members.

“Just because a particular item doesn’t work in your house anymore doesn’t mean it won’t work in someone else’s,” Fisher says. “We like people bringing it to us and giving it new life. The Bible talks about reuse, renew and restore. That’s how Habitat for Humanity came up with the name ReStore. It has life. It always has life.”

Fisher says ReStore customers are about a 50/50 mix of contractors and traditional homeowners or landlords.

The contractors are mainly interested in the new products that the ReStore has to offer, whereas homeowners and landlords look for used items as a costsaving measure.

All proceeds from items sold are returned directly to the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate to cover operational expenses. “It helps to sustain us as an organization, so we’re not always out there in the community with our hand out to cover operating expenses,” Fisher explains.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Akron is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The store is also actively seeking donations of building materials, appliances and furniture. For details, call 330-745-9098. All donations are tax deductible.

wo historic steam engines are in town for a limited engagement with the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in September.

• The Viscose Company #6, a 1925, Baldwin-built, coal-fired 0-4-0 saddle tank steam engine will be visiting from New York.

• The massive Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire No. 765: the largest operating steam locomotive east of the Mississippi and the pride of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society will be here too.

It’s Time to Hit the Trails...

ooler temperatures and changing leaves make fall hiking one of Akron’s best simple pleasures. The Fall Hiking Spree, now in its 47th year, gives residents a little extra incentive to revisit their favorite trails while getting to know some new ones.

Complete at least eight designated trails between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30, record the date you took each hike and turn your participation form in to the Metro Parks, Serving Summit County.

First-year hikers earn a wooden walking stick. Veterans receive a commemorative metal shield. Hiking forms are available at Seiberling Nature Realm on 1828 Smith Road, the park district’s administrative offices at 975 Treaty Line Road or at any Acme Fresh Market. (Download them at summitmetroparks.org.) ...And to Meet Cheeks, the chipmunk mascot Wanna make the hikes extra fun for the kids? Take them to meet Cheeks, the parks’ chipmunk mascot. Akron Film Fest is Back

W

hether you love watching indie films or aspire to be part of a team who makes them, the Akron Film Festival has something for you. The festival returns to The Akron Art Museum, Sept. 23-26 with more locally produced films, more international offerings and a selection of winners from the Tribeca, Sundance and Roderdam festivals.

Two local films are slated for Opening Night. Both will be followed by brief Q&A sessions.

“The Real Bold Bad Men” A micro-documentary about local cowboy and filmmaker Len Zaleski and his brother who shot amateur westerns in the Canton area in the 1940s. Joe Siebert directed this short film. Cinematographer was John Pope. It starts at 6:45 p.m.

Proceeds from the event help a family in need build the walls, raise the roof and open the door to a brighter future.

“Sincerely, P.V. Reese” An introspective documentary about friends growing up in Akron in the shadow of the rubber industry. After having worked together in 1998 on a film called “Dear Mothman,” they reconnect as adults today. This film was directed by Philip Swift. It starts at 7:45 p.m.

New workshop topics this year include photography, Adobe Aftereffects and the fine art of titling/subtitling.

Sipping Wine in Another Hemisphere

killed and innovative wine producers put the shaly soils and perfect wine growing conditions of the Central Otago region of New Zealand to good use.

This spring, I found myself, my husband, John, and two good friends (lucky enough to be) in the Southern Lakes region located in the southwest corner of the South Island of New Zealand. Part of a month-long trip that began in Australia, vineyard visits in New Zealand were definitely on my tasting “to do” list.

Grapes were first planted here by a Frenchman during the 1860’s gold rush, but the modern industry has only become established over the past 20 years or so.

We arrived at the onset of fall, but later that autumn, 177 vineyards would harvest more than 3,500 tons of grapes…and those grapes would be lovingly nudged into fantastic wine by 75 wineries.

I was ready to put a selection of New Zealand varietals to the test, since this world’s southernmost wine producing region is also one of the most glowingly awarded and a decadent drop (or more) of the renowned local pinot noir was not to be missed!

First stop, Amisfield Wine Company Ltd. [www.amisfield. co.nz]. Located at Lake Hayes, 10 minutes from Queenstown [www.queenstown-nz.co.nz], Amisfield features a spectacular wine tasting room and award-winning Bistro. A blend of historic architecture with contemporary design features, Amisfield is a specialist producer of pinot noir and aromatic white wines made with grapes sources from their vineyard near Lake Dunstan, Central Otago.

Their single vineyard, estate grown wines reflect their philosophy of “Grown Not Made.” The Bistro is renowned for their “Trust the Chef” menu which includes a selection of dishes chosen by the chef based on the freshest ingredients available.

Their winemaking approach is one of minimal impact on the extraordinary fruit as it is processed from season to season, making the wines a natural expression of the land from which they are created. All fruit at Amisfield is hand harvested; whites are whole bunch pressed; pinots are partially whole bunch fermented and all their wines are fermented, where possible, with indigenous yeasts.

The cave—unique to Gibbston—is New Zealand’s largest and most innovative. Constant humidity and temperature provide the perfect haven for the barrel maturation of award wines.

Established in 1987, they were the first commercial wine producers in the Central Otago region, and the winery has earned an internationally acclaimed reputation for their Otago pinot noir and other thriving grape varieties (chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling and pinot blanc).

“When will this wine be ready to drink?”

O

ne of our guides stated that this is the most frequently asked question on their wine tours. Not a simple answer (with plenty of exceptions), it depends on these four main factors: 1. The grape variety used to make the wine. Some varieties will, as a rule, cellar longer than others. Sauvignon blancs are generally designed to be enjoyed young, while a top quality pinot noir may need many years to reach maturity.

A beautifully restored church, built in 1893, now provides a tranquil oasis of magnificent scenery and is a stunning backdrop where one can enjoy their show-stopping pinot noir.

Just an easy 20 minute drive from Queenstown sits Peregrine Wines [www.peregrinewines.co.nz]. The Peregrine wines are named in honor of New Zealand’s endemic falcon (Karearea in Maori), a bird that combines power and finesse, the essence of their wines.

Peregrine’s prime focus (Mohua and Saddleback are their other vineyard brands) is on growing premium pinot noir and white varieties from their estate managed vineyards, which are all meticulously hand-tended and farmed under a sustainable philosophy. Having its vineyards in the two top regions of the area, these areas typically produce intensely flavored wines of finesse and elegance with predominantly schist soils adding a mineral complexity.

Now a modern winery containing lots of stainless steel and oak, their winemaking approach, however, remains along traditional lines with minimal intervention so as to let the unique fruit flavors of Central Otago do the talking. These are wines with attitude! I sipped my way through 2009 sauvignon blanc, 2009 chardonnay, and the most awarded pinot noir of New Zealand, their 2007.

After visiting and tasting, there’s no question that the vineyards of New Zealand’s Central Otago region benefit from a wide variety of soils and semi-continental climate—and so does everyone who enjoys truly spectacular wines.

2. The quality of the fruit. To make a top quality wine with the ability to develop in the bottle requires top quality fruit (and, of course, top quality winemaking). That bargain bin wine from the supermarket is undoubtedly intended to be drunk right now!

3. What the winemaker intended when they made the wine. Some wines are deliberately made to be drunk young, and some are designed to improve with bottle aging.

4. Your own personal tastes. Some people prefer to drink wines at an earlier stage, while others enjoy more mature flavors of a well-aged wine.

As a rule, younger wines will tend to be fresher and crisper with more obvious fruit character. Aged wines will be softer, more complex and have more “bottle developed” secondary characters. A young pinot noir, for example, will exhibit more cherry and strawberry characters, while an older one will have more forest floor flavors—mushrooms as an example.

Martha “Marty” Galloway Fitzpatrick LIVED IN: STOW MAJOR: SECONDARY EDUCATION Career: Teacher Freshmen never know what to expect of their first roommates. When Martha moved on campus in 1943, she met the girl who was to share her space as well as her first name. From then on, Martha was called Marty, but that’s not all that was interesting about her dorm experience. “Dorm life was very different then,” she explained. “For one thing, there were no radios allowed.” Students also had to sign in every evening by 10:30 p.m. or an hour later on the weekend.

Helen Dix CURRENT LOCATION: KENT MAJOR: BUSINESS Career: Community leader and long-time contributor to Kent State Helen and her family have spent decades giving to Kent, the community and the university. But back in the 1930s, she was just a student herself. It was a big time for the school. Kent State was starting to flourish in this postDepression era, transforming from a “normal school” into a university. Expanding curriculum led to increased enrollment. With 2,000 faculty members and students, most of them male, students had to scrounge for rooms in town and cram into classroom buildings. Locker rooms, hallways, basements and even large broom closets doubled as classrooms. With a new football coach and athletic director, Kent athletics also started to grow after 1935, allowing students to enjoy watching their teams play on the new sports fields.

Back then, it was cheaper to commute than to pay dorm fees, leading Kent to grow as a commuter school. Walking to class every day, Helen was one of those commuters.

She spent four years studying as a business major, but some of her favorite classes were actually in journalism.

In 1938, she even enjoyed serving as editor of the school 46

newspaper, the Daily Kent Stater. She participated in the parades of Campus Day and Homecoming, but like most students of the late ‘30s, she devoted a lot of her time to working her part-time job.

Helen worked at the Robin Hood, a restaurant back then and much different from the bar it is today. “I enjoyed being at Kent, but I also worked hard,” she says.

Although she spent a lot of time working, Helen says she was glad to be going to college. “My family wanted me to have an education,” she says. “I wanted to go to school.”

In the years since, Helen has watched the university grow.

She explains that one of the most drastic changes is in the number of students, much different from the intimate student body she enjoyed. “It was a different time,” she says. “Going to Kent was like being part of a family. People would greet each other as they passed. You knew most of the people you saw, and we were all pretty close.”

In Marty’s time, Cokes were 5 cents, though she said, “We made them last an hour at the Brady,” which used to be where Starbucks is now. And your date took you to a dance at Wills Gym. “It was a great time,” she said.

It was also a much more formal time. There were no students walking around in pajama pants. Girls didn’t even wear pants.

Students dined simultaneously with white tablecloths and waiters in nice jackets. “Before the war, we had a very normal college life,” Marty said. “It was wonderful, and we all enjoyed it.”

But among all the memories of fun times, Marty held re somber air. She remembered the day everyone assembled in the auditoium, and FDR declared ar. “We all gathered and tened to the radio,” she membered. “From that time everything was different.” many faculty and students for the war effort that only students remained at Kent in ‘43. But the campus was

By the time he had graduated from high school, served a year in the Navy, spent two years in the Reserve during the war and then some time working on railroads, George was 22 when he finally attended Kent State for $140 a year.

With just one male dorm at the time (Stopher Hall), living space on campus was limited. George commuted his first year, but then joined Sigma Nu and lived with eight others in a house on the corner of University Drive. “That was one of the main reasons people went Greek back then,” he says. “It gave you a place to live, and since we had a housemother to cook, a place to eat.” Eight may seem like a tight squeeze today, but George says with the lack of apartments and dorms, some houses had as many as 21 people living in them. “They’d all squeeze into four bedrooms and an attic,” he says, “and there was no alcohol allowed in the house, though everyone smoked back then. The whole house was a chimney.”

Students like Marty were taken in by locals to make room for the 2,000 air crew members who were sheltered on campus. “The townspeople were wonderful to accommodate us,” she said. “I’m afraid most of us made a terrible mess in their bathrooms with our leg make-up! But nylon was needed for the war, and nice hose were hard to come by.” She said male students were allowed to finish and then went off to war.

She watched them leave—friends she loved and one she was in love with. “It was the parting of a lot of people,” she said.

“It was a sad time.” Remaining female students wrote letters to soldiers in far away places like Italy and Africa. But Marty also had the opportunity to watch a lot of students come back under the G.I. Bill and do very well. She said she loved her college days.

Marty went back to the campus many times since she walked it as a student. “Today’s students have a lot of things we didn’t have,” she noted. “When I was here very few students had cars—just the lucky ones.”

With money tight, trips downtown for George and his friends were limited. “We’d only have about 5 or 6 bucks to spend,” he remembers. “We’d go to Ray’s on Thursdays for 99-cent spaghetti and a beer or two, and that was it.”

It was a time of tradition, and most of Kent’s 5,000 students enjoyed participating. Freshm wore small beanies, called dinks, and were invited for tea and cookies in President George Bowman’s home.

George remembers campus events, especially one homecoming when Sammy Davis Jr. came and played until 2:30 a.m. He recalls Campus Day and Song Fest when Greeks dressed in white outfits competing and “looking like a mil lion bucks,” he says. Maypole dancers were brought out in limos, and the community participated just as much as the students. “The townspeop and university were a very clos society of people back then,” he says. Having served on the university board of trustees, George has seen how things have changed. “There’s a very different relationship between the town and university that developed after 1970,” he says.

“The administration now is trying to change that.”

‘6 ‘68 Ted He Henry

CURRENT LOCATION: CLEVELAND MAJOR: BROADCAST JOURNALISM Career: News anchor on WEWS Channel 5 in Cleveland After 37 successful years as a newscaster, you may be surprised to learn that Ted needed some help overcoming his fear of public speaking when he first attended Kent State.

Dr. Phil Macomber, head of the theater department, gave him the self-confidence and speaking skills he needed to be successful. “He guaranteed he could do it in six weeks,” Ted recalls. “It took six days because speech classes were all I took the first semester.” Not an ideal first few weeks for any shy freshmen, but Ted was grateful. “He gave me my career,” he says.

Ted spent most of his time working three jobs at local news stations while going to school. Though he lacked free time, he was able to witness the cultural shift in the late 1960s through a journalist’s eyes. He remembers the weekly war demonstrations, which he was responsible for covering. “It was very interesting and also exciting,” he says. “I even got to interview Nixon, who was running for presidency at the time.” He remembers a lot of turmoil on campus because of the war and a lot of talk about the civil rights movement.

He watched the decade open with the death of JFK and end with King’s. Two great leaders turned to great losses.

“The world stood still,” he says. “Everyone was in complete

disbelief. No one knew what to make of the future or what would happen next.”

Ted remembers that decade as being one of the “most nerveracking, tragic and unpredictable” of his life. Yet, he recognizes many world issues that came later sprang from those events he covered back in the late ‘60s as a young reporter. He was literally in the front row to history.

Ted says he feels lucky to have had those opportunities that would later help his career. He realizes it’s much harder for students today in a world that has changed its view of America and is moving ahead in competition with it. “My hope is that young students today are aware of that,” he says. “They’re going to have to work twice as hard as their parents did—if they went to college—because the jobs are much harder to come by.”

CURRENT LOCATION: GREEN MAJOR: BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Career: Program Specialist for Summit County DD Board Most people have seen the movie “Animal House,” but George says he actually lived it. Some of his fondest memories are from living with his Sigma Nu brothers.

“We didn’t do anything constructive,” as he puts it. But like George, most people kept their partying off campus because, “you could get in big trouble for that.” And with a drinking age of 18, students didn’t need to hide their 3.2 percent beer. They took their partying downtown to places like The Kove and JB’s.

Yet, amid all the partying George remembers Glenn Frank’s “killer” geology class and his French class that also had a cool teacher. George was one of 22,000 students who enjoyed a new bus system, student center, library and Dix Stadium. He remembers dorm rooms packed with three people. “Kent was bulging at the time,” he says, “but a lot of kids flunked out, so there was a big turnover in the first year.” George went to school during a time of transformation. He saw the passage from penny loafers to bell-bottoms and feels he was part of one of the “last responsible classes,” before people started experimenting heavily with drugs.

George says a lot of the early uprisings were “just for fun,” but over time, people became more politically motivated. He watched as students burned the ROTC building, while some guys he would have described as “collegiate” just three years earlier cut the fire hoses. “Riots are strange,” he says. “I was amazed at the whole thing.” George planned to attend the demonstration that would change Kent’s history. He was about to leave, when his girlfriend went back for a heavier jacket. “Of

course it took her 15 minutes to find the right one, and we were late,” he says.

A delay that may have saved their lives. They were walking on the side of Johnson Hall, about to head up the side of the hill when the shooting started. “It sounded like firecrackers,” he remembers. “The ambulance went up the hill, and we ran up there. There were dead people lying on the ground.”

He says he was in the vicinity of those famous pictures and saw a student, probably Jeffrey Miller, who had been shot in the head and was lying in a pool of blood. After they announced the campus was closed, George sat on his front porch and watched car after car leave while helicopters arrived. “Before then, when I would tell people where I went to school I’d get little reaction, but after that, everyone knew Kent,” he says.

That summer, Kent became a normal, sleepy little town again.

“The difference is drastic now,” he says. “The town has grown so much, you don’t notice the change in the summers as much anymore. The university doesn’t overwhelm the town.”

‘89 Tina Knauss CURRENT LOCATION: NORTH CANTON MAJOR: INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY Career: Advertising and promotion legal analyst at J.M. Smucker Co. As an industrial technology major, Tina was involved with student chapters of professional organizations, such as the American Foundry Society. “I learned a lot through these organizations, but I also had a lot of fun,” she says. “They took us to dinner, and we’d do all kinds of work to benefit things besides our college. Sometimes we’d work all night long and they’d bring us coffee and doughnuts in the morning. It was like a major slumber party.”

Like so many students, Tina found work on campus to make her way through school. Though she worked several jobs, she especially remembers working at Wendy’s in the student center.

“There was a great number of retired men and women whose

and they’d come through and bring me flowers,” she recalls.

One memory isn’t so bright. Tina remembers the space shuttle Challenger crashing during her freshman year, as she watched all seven crewmembers die on the live morning programming. “It was so surreal,” she says. “A lot of students walked around the dorm like zombies.” She says it was significant to her because of the things she learned about aerospace and aeronautics in the College of Technology. “It was like thinking about it on a day-to-day basis,” she says. “It’s horrible enough when you see someone tumble out of the sky, but even crazier when you know the science behind it.”

atthew Bryant CURRENT LOCATION: AKRON MAJOR: EDUCATION Career: Physics teacher for grades 10 through 12 Residence halls without cable are one thing, but dorm bathrooms without any paper towels or soap? These are just some of the issues Matt worked on as part of the Kent Interhall Council.

“It was a lot of work, but we had a lot of fun,” he says. “I felt very connected to the campus. By my last year, I couldn’t walk around campus without seeing someone I knew.”

Through KIC, Matt helped coordinate events, but also enjoyed them. He watched movies like “Pulp Fiction” in the Kiva Auditorium, organized events in the Rathskeller and even played a little broomball, which is not a sport for the weak. “It was pretty insane,” he says. Though not as insane as the time he drove a golf cart through the Taco Bell drive-thru. He enjoyed the new state-of-the-art Recreation and Wellness Center with its whirlpools and saunas, watched George Clinton and the Wallflowers and even had dinner with Bob Dole.

’61-present

About Those Black Squirrels...

Those cute little critters weren’t always part of Kent, Ohio. In 1961, ten rare black squirrels were imported from Canada by the superintendent of grounds and a retired executive of the Davey Tree Expert Co. At first, many mistook them for skunks, but now they are kind of unofficial mascots of the town and the university.

Chris Sharron CURRENT LOCATION: STOW MAJOR: GENERAL STUDIES Winner of Charles M. Schulz Award for his cartoons in the Daily Kent Stater Chris entered Kent in fall 2006 as an education major, but later switched to art education. Still, when he decided teaching wasn’t what he was looking for, he settled on general studies, a journey through majors that’s anything but uncommon among today’s students.

During the late ‘90s, Kent was slowly becoming a “wired” campus. “When I started, there weren’t many students with computers in their rooms and even fewer had laptops,” Matt says. “Most people had to go to computer labs. I was a tour guide, and I remember we’d take people to the art building because they had the nicest Mac computers.”

As a commuter student, Chris met most of his friends while working as a political cartoonist for the Daily Kent Stater.

“During high school, I was restless to try something new, so I took a few classes at Kent State and took someone’s suggestion to work on the summer Stater,” he says. “A lot of the memories I have of Kent are from working there with those people.”

Chris also volunteers with his sister at Kent Social Services. He says his time in the community has been as important as being on campus. “Being out in the community helps you understand it in a way you won’t get if you’re always on campus,” he says. “It helps you develop a respect for the people and the town, instead of feeling like you own the place.”

But the real world is approaching fast as Chris prepares for graduation. Although he isn’t eager to start a full-time job, he says working on the Stater has made him want to cartoon and illustrate at least on the side. “If I hadn’t gotten the job on the Stater, I probably wouldn’t have kept up my drawing. Now I know I’ll keep that part of me no matter what I end up doing.”

Like most seniors, Chris is hesitant about making his first steps into the real world. “I don’t really know what I’ll find yet,” he says. But looking at those who have graduated before him, life after Kent State is a just another adventure.

From Dream to Reality: Don’t Look Back

I

t was a late night at the gym. I could have gone from the office straight to the Y and finished training hours ago.

But I didn’t. By the time I got home, it was after 10, and I still had to eat another meal and make tomorrow’s chicken before I could call it a day.

At 51, I had entered my first figure competition. The thought of putting on a posing suit (I didn’t even own a two-piece bathing suit) and four-inch heels and standing on stage where a panel of judges would decide how I ranked compared with women on both sides of me was both terrifying and thrilling. I couldn’t cut any corners, so I stayed up until the chicken was done.

I’d had a lot of time to think about this. I remember seeing bodybuilding pictures in a fitness magazine when I was in high

school. I was fascinated by the physiques I saw there. I never considered myself much of an athlete. Still, I had a bent toward fitness, and through Jazzercise I had found my niche and learned how to make exercise a way of life.

My exercise regimen became sporadic after resigning as a Jazzercise instructor to focus on other callings—staying at home to educate our son, going back to school to complete my degree and later returning to the workforce. During that time, I discovered the gym. At the YMCA, I started out in classes where I felt most comfortable. Later, I ventured over to the weight machines and then the free weights. I saw potential in myself. I got up the courage to share with a fitness instructor my desire to seriously train and maybe even compete. I did not get a positive response. I learned to be a little more discerning when it came to revealing my silly dreams.

Two years ago, nearly 30 years after being certified with Jazzercise the first time, I was recertified, and my exercise became a little more regular again. My husband, Dave, saw that the Riverfront YMCA in Cuyahoga Falls offered personal training. I had shared my silly dream with Dave, who took me seriously and seized the opportunity to help my dream become reality. He approached trainer Ruth Miller and told her, “My wife will probably be calling you.”

I did call Ruth and learned that she was preparing to compete in her second figure competition. Ruth spoke from experience, and when I told her that I didn’t know if I could compete (I was 10 years older than I was last time I talked about competing), she assured me that it was possible and encouraged me to do it. We got to work in November to prepare for a March figure competition.

I had to learn to eat a lot of food. I was one to pour myself a cup of coffee and think I was good to go. Now I get up extra early to prepare not only my six eggs for breakfast but all the meals I need to have with me during the day.

As March grew closer, I ordered my posing suit, bought my high-heeled “Barbie” shoes, went to the salons for tan and manicure and practiced posing—all necessary to being ready to present to the judges my most polished self. each one after that, tweaking your performance to make it even better than the last. I’ve ordered another suit and have entered a couple more shows, including the NPC Natural Northern Championships on Oct. 2 in Lakewood. I will compete in Open Figure to see if I can improve on my seventh place finish there. I have discovered that the athletes who compete in this arena are competing with other people against themselves. I like that approach and have made some dear friends among my fellow competitors.

The support that I have received from friends and family has been humbling.

I treasure them and want to follow their lead in being an encourager to you.

Do you know anyone who feels short of breath almost all the time? Or who often coughs or wheezes and has trouble with activities of daily living? Those are common signs of COPD—chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the fourth leading cause of death in America. COPD is just one condition treated by a medical specialist known as a pulmonologist. In this month’s Healthy Tips, we ask Summa Health System Pulmonologist Michael Chandler, M.D., a few questions about his medical specialty.

Q: What is Pulmonology?

A: Pulmonology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine concerned with diseases of the airways and lungs such as asthma, COPD, and pneumonia. Pulmonologists also have additional training in the evaluation of the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx and throat) and the heart as problems in these places can mimic or compound pulmonary problems.

Q: How do you become a Pulmonologist?

A: Pulmonologists typically complete seven years of medical school and postgraduate training to become board certified in Internal Medicine. They study conditions specific to the respiratory system for an additional two to three years in order to receive certification in Pulmonology.

Q: Do Pulmonologists perform surgery?

A: It depends on the level of surgery necessary. For example, Pulmonologists routinely obtain tissue samples from the airways, lungs or lining of the chest wall. Some Pulmonologists are trained to place devices in the lung or use lasers, intense cold or even radiation in the treatment of various conditions. Major surgical procedures are typically performed by a Thoracic Surgeon.

Q: When might I need to see a Pulmonologist?

A: Not everyone who suffers from an acute or chronic respiratory condition needs a Pulmonologist. Many of these conditions can be effectively managed by your primary care physician. If symptoms persist or the nature of the respiratory condition remains undetermined, your primary care physician will refer you to a Pulmonolgist.

Memory Fitness Can attitude and lifestyle changes keep memory loss at bay?

M

any baby boomers today say their biggest health concern is not cancer, heart attack or stroke. It’s memory loss. After watching their parents or other elders battle everything from forgetfulness to Alzheimer’s disease, an increasing number are approaching their own aging with a fair amount of apprehension.

Is memory loss a normal part of aging?

Can it be prevented or even reversed?

We asked Kathryn Kilpatrick and Gary Motta, two local speech and language pathologists to share some of what they’ve learned from years of working with geriatric patients. Here’s some of what they had to say.

What’s Normal?

Aging does have an impact on our brains—as it does on every organ in our bodies. And to a certain extent, issues like finding the right word while speaking or feeling as though it takes you longer to adapt to new things are normal parts of aging.

If you’re worried about forgetfulness, “don’t be afraid to tell your doctor,” Motta advises. It’s important to identify the true cause in order to know how to deal with it effectively.

There are almost 100 reversible causes of memory loss, Kilpatrick says. Don’t assume you just have to live with it. Don’t assume you’re on the road to Alzheimer’s disease.

Depression, Stress and Memory Loss

The single largest reversible cause of memory loss is depression—something that many senior citizens must grapple with. When long-term grief dominates “the tape that’s always playing your head,” your ability to pay attention erodes and memory loss is sure to follow.

Unrelenting stress is a big contributor to memory loss, too. Motta and Kilpatrick say they often see this in their patients— and not just in the elderly. Plenty of caregivers and even overloaded college students struggle with stress-related memory loss.

Stress creates cortisol (a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland) in our systems and cortisol is like battery acid to the memory center of the brain, according to Kilpatrick.

What can you do to combat depression and stress?

Regular exercise is probably the single greatest weapon.

Try these practical techniques to help yourself remember things you tend to forget: • Pay attention when you are given information. You can’t remember what you never learned in the first place.

• Put important items, like your keys, in the same place every time.

• Write things down; keep lists.

• When you meet new people, listen to their name and repeat it out loud to increase your chances of recalling it later.

• Live in the present. Refuse to “check out” mentally—be here.

“Find a way to exercise. It’s huge,” Kilpatrick says.

“You’ve gotta feed your mind and your body [literally and spiritually/emotionally],” Motta says.

Lots of senior citizens don’t enjoy eating alone or cooking for one, but skimping on nutrition only complicates their problems. Getting the right vitamins and minerals and getting enough protein are critical to maintaining good mental and physical health. Chronic dehydration, skipping breakfast or “living on tea and toast” day after day contributes to mental decline in seniors (as it would in people of any age.)

Sleep disorders like insomnia or sleep apnea are other common problems. Over time, these disorders can impair cognitive abilities significantly. Both Motta and Kilpatrick have seen huge cognitive and memory gains in patients whose treatment plans resulted in giving them the rest they so desperately needed.

Do puzzles and games and other things to stimulate and challenge your brain.

If you’re reading, read out loud for a while each day. Read every other word or read backwards. Call out the vowels or look for repeating words or phrases.

Print your grocery list with the opposite hand, just for the challenge. Whatever you’re currently doing, kick it up a notch to give your brain a workout.

All of these things will help to strengthen the connections between your brain cells.

Social Connections, Meditation and Humor

Because we are relational beings, we need ongoing connections with others. Work at staying connected to others socially. Play cards with a group.

Schedule a regular meal with family members or friends. Sometimes those kinds of things become more challenging as you age and lose mobility, vision or hearing, but your persistence in this area can greatly improve your quality of life.

Meditation—in any form that works for you—has the power to calm and refresh.

Practice slowing down and pondering words of comfort, hope and strength.

Don’t end the day with negative news or start the day that way. Positive energy helps to keep your anxiety in check and your mind sharp.

Finally, lighten up on yourself, and find humor in your life. We all need it, Kilpatrick reminds.

Nobody remembers everything all the time, so instead of feeling overwhelmed the next time you forget a name you think you should know, use a memory strategy to diffuse the situation. Smile, take a deep breath and say something like, “You look familiar. My name is ...”

It’s not really that big of a deal. You may even be doing the other person a favor because quite possibly, they forgot your name, too.

What about Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease?

Dementia is an umbrella term that describes a loss of brain function that affects memory, thinking, judgment and behavior in ways that are serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease, its largest single cause, accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.

hat brings us on a first-time visit or a return trip to Ohio’s Amish Country? Is it the beauty of the back roads, children playing on an Amish school grounds, neat farm houses bordered by flower beds, Amish quilts for sale or a farm-style buffet at an Amish restaurant? Or is it the peace and charm we find once we get off the main routes?

Travel to Ohio’s Amish Country can take you in different directions. Head 30 miles east of Cleveland to Geauga County—home to the fourth largest Amish community in the world. Head south to Holmes, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties—often thought of as the heart of Amish settlements in Ohio. This triangle of counties lays claim to the largest Amish population in the world.

Watch for slow-moving vehicles on your visits to these rural areas, and be aware that many businesses and restaurants are closed on Sunday.

ith my dad’s 70th birthday around the corner, I started thinking about all of the things he has done—including everything from being a disc jockey to a race car driver. He was born in an apartment above a grocery store in Cambridge, Ohio. When my grandfather came back from the war and went to work for the pipeline, the family followed behind in a small trailer that traveled to construction locations around the country. Because of that, my dad has lived in more places than I can count.

My dad never laid down roots for long as a kid, so that may explain why he has stayed in the Akron area for so long as an adult. He wasn’t born here, but he was most certainly put together here.

When my dad worked for Babcox Publications in Akron in the late ’60s, he covered many of the big races. It turned out that he loved the atmosphere of gasoline and smoking tires so much that he passed it down to his two sons who both were afflicted with the same fever.

Imagine the eyes of a 6-year-old when his dad says he just traded a dune buggy for some quarter midget racers, and asks, “Would you like to race?”

My dad gave up nearly everything he had to help my brother and I try to achieve our racing dreams. While most parents say the minute you graduate from high school you should go to college, my dad (and mom) knew we had other dreams to pursue first. He never said it was impossible or that we weren’t talented enough or that we should be realistic. He rolled up his sleeves and taught us everything he knew and helped guide us on September 2010

the path we thought was best to achieve our goals. He taught us how to dream and how to make those dreams into reality when most parents would say, “You’re wasting your time,” or ask, “Why don’t you get a real job?” Eventually we got real jobs and started a publishing company with my dad leading the way.

While my dad may not have possessed the genes that allow him to properly sear meat over fire, he possesses in spades a passion for life and a belief that things will be better in the future. I only hope to get a sliver of that gene someday.

Maybe he is storing it in some garage or vault somewhere for the rest of us.

We may joke around that he sees life through rose-colored glasses, but in the grand scheme of things isn’t life more about the journey than the destination?
