The Riviera Maya has been my preferred destination for several years now. Some friends and I stay at the Bahia Principe located about 60 miles south of Cancun. We spent a lot of time trying out their many sparkling pools. Our day trip to Cozumel was spectacular. We rented a car and were able to explore most of the island’s beautiful beaches. I spent most of my time down by the water enjoying the sounds of the waves, collecting shells and observing unique wildlife.

With no house to clean and no meals to cook, I had plenty of time to sit under a palm tree with my margarita in one hand and my Akron Life & Leisure in the other.

Magazines Are Forever

H

ow many magazines do you have lying around the house? That’s what I thought. I’ll bet you have a whole stack of them. When you last visited your doctor, dentist or psychiatrist, what did you do while waiting for your turn? Chances are you read a magazine, albeit, probably an old one. How many times have you ripped out a subscription card from one of the magazines or maybe even walked out of the doctor’s office with the magazine in hand because you hadn’t finished the article you were reading?

Now, let me ask, what did you do with yesterday’s newspaper?

Yes, I thought so. You pitched it or put it in a bag to be recycled in the weekly trash pick-up, lined the bottom of the birdcage or left it in the restaurant where you bought it. You see, newspapers have been going through a catharsis, the magnitude of which we haven’t seen since the invention of moveable type. The source through which we have been receiving our news, the newspaper, is being supplanted by something else—the Internet. Of course you know that, but what you probably didn’t know is that when newspapers began morphing into online information sites, they didn’t take magazines into the digital world with them. Don’t get me wrong. The Internet is a vital component of most magazines, but does not usurp the print publication. Work is underway for Akron Life & Leisure’s new Web site, which will be a companion to the magazine, not its replacement.

People often ask me how our magazine is doing in the face of all the newspaper closings across the country. When you hear that the Rocky Mountain News in Denver and the Seattle Intelligencer, two newspapers that have been around for over a century, have folded because of online competition, you know that this threat is real. Newspapers and magazines

are similar in that they are both made of ink on paper, but magazines for the most part are more akin to the Internet than to the newspaper in several important ways. Magazines depend on images as much as words to get stories across and they provide a particular point of view. For instance, Akron Life & Leisure covers only the greater Akron area, with little regard for the goings on in Cleveland or Washington, D.C. Magazines also match style with substance more than newspapers. And finally, magazines are forever (or so it would seem). In comparing magazines to the Internet, I want to quote a blog I read the other day by Rex Hammock, who writes RexBlog.com for Publishing Executive, a trade magazine for the magazine publishing industry.

“No one will ever collect NationalGeographic.com. OK, here is my suggestion to those in the magazine industry who haven’t figured out how to compare magazines with the Web. The magazines we love are not merely things we read and enjoy; they are expressions of who we are. We display them on coffee tables and desks the way people wear designer labels on clothes or purchase one model of car over another.

People collect magazines, trade them and display them on decorative racks or in frames hung on the wall. Magazines provide us with mementos of our life’s journey. They allow us to savor our passions and save special moments. The magazines we love are so important to us, they make us feel guilty to consider throwing them away. The Web is a wonderful thing when you want to drink information from a fire hose. But the magazines people love are like bottles of fine wine: Even if you have to wait a little before opening it, there’s something a bit exciting about the anticipation.”

I hope you will enjoy this issue of Akron Life & Leisure. Take it on vacation, save it for the weekend when you will have time to enjoy it, and add it to the pile of other important magazines you just can’t bring yourself to throw away. Most of all savor it. Or should I simply say “Bon Appetite?”

n Saturday, Aug. 22, guests gathered for Taste of Earth, a dinner celebration of Crown Point Ecology Center’s 20th anniversary. Guests began the evening in the barn, which was transformed into an elegant silent auction house. From there, they moved over to the tent where they enjoyed dinner made mostly from fresh produce and herbs grown at Crown Point. The few items that were not grown on-site were all sourced from local farms. The event also honored Crown Point’s founder, Sr. Patricia Marie Sigler, who remains active in the organization. Proceeds benefit Crown Point’s mission of promoting and practicing sustain-

able agriculture, educating youngsters and adults about conservation, feeding the hungry through the Food Bank Farm and protecting a beautiful piece of earth.

eld July 17-19 in the First & Main shopping area, the Hudson Wine Festival brought more than 5,000 people to downtown Hudson. Guests sampled from more than 250 wines while they enjoyed musical entertainment, delectable food, and more than 30 vendors and artists. Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Greater Akron, and through the event six cats and two dogs found loving homes, with several other adoptions still pending.

riday, Aug. 14, marked the fourth annual Summer Safari at the Akron Zoo. More than 300 guests were in attendance for the event, which included a raffle, silent and oral auctions, up-close animal encounters, food from area restaurants and a live animal show, as well as an opportunity to feed the zoo’s penguins. The event raised more than $94,000 for the animals, education and conservation programs at the Akron Zoo.

Paul Martin Akron-area “car guy” and philanthropist

P

aul Martin made so much money in the car business that, at the age of 95, he still hasn’t been able to give it all away. Of course, to be able to give some $13 million away, he had to first make the money.

He was graduated from University of Akron in 1935 with a major in economics and a minor in political science, both of which would serve him well in his future. After graduation, he joined his father in opening a Dodge dealership in Barberton and thus began his long career in the car business in all of its forms. Back in those days, the Akron Automobile Dealers Association was just a loose connection of car dealers who were banding together to set rules and regulations for local car dealers. Martin became the group’s general manager in 1938, and by the time he joined the Army in 1941 he had recruited all Akron area dealers into the organization.

Organization is what Paul Martin seems to do best. While in the Army during WWII, he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel for the Ordinance Department.

While stationed in France, he oversaw 8,000 troops who manufactured and maintained various jeeps and trucks (again the car connection), and was awarded a Bronze Star for outstanding service. Unfortunately, he was involved in an automobile crash while his driver was speeding through the rain with virtually no headlights (during that war nighttime lighting was closely restricted). He was ejected through the windshield and sustained life-threatening injuries that kept him hospitalized both in Europe and in America for a long time.

Upon returning to civilian life, he rejoined his wife Dorothy, whom he had met and married before the war, and began selling automobile replacement parts all over the eastern United States. But selling cars was his destiny, and he became general manager for City Chevrolet in Akron. By 1958 he was ready to open his own dealership.

he was awarded a Chevrolet franchise in Warren, Ohio, and named it Martin Chevrolet. “Back in those days,” Martin admits, “selling cars was like shoveling money out of the streets.” Because of the war, automobile manufacturers converted their assembly lines for the making of tanks and other war-related products. After the war, the pent-up demand for new cars was overwhelming

and getting them was more difficult than selling them. “Just after the war,” Martin relates, “a man stopped his old pre-war car in the middle of the street and walked in our dealership and bought the first car he saw.

All we had to do was haul his junker away.”

Higher education has always been important to Dr. Martin, a title bestowed on him by UA’s Board of Trustees, which he chaired for many years. He has used his organizational and fundraising talents to raise money for many Northeast Ohio colleges (including Hiram College where he served as vice chairman of the Hiram College of Trustees), universities, hospitals and his own Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Of the $13 million that Martin has given away, $7 million of it has been directed to his alma mater UA. Many readers will recognize the Martin University Center, site of many business and social functions. You can read of the many contributions Martin has made through newspaper clippings and photos that have been framed in the building’s lower level hallway in his honor. The list of honors, contributions and chairs he has held are far too numerous for this space. The list is long and keeps getting longer.

Even at the age of 95, he still thinks of ways to help the people and institutions with which he has been associated for a long time.

Brimfield State Route 43 and Tallmadge Road

I

f you’re looking for a place to enjoy an old-fashioned drive in the country on a lazy afternoon, you might want to head out to Brimfield Township.

Lula Bell’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers & Ice Cream, is a new diner just a little further down Route 43. Owner Lori Ridenour (Lula Bell) jokes that “43 is the Route 66 of Brimfield.”

Just beyond the junction of I-76 and state Route 43, south of Kent, you’ll find the Kelso House. This Greek Revival-style home, built in 1837, once served as a tavern and later a post office.

Saved from demolition in 1963, it was given new life as a local history museum.

Her place has been open just a few months, but its ’50’s style menu— including stuffed hamburgers, meatloaf sandwiches, coneys, fresh cut fries, hand dipped shakes and malts—is already catching on.

Stop by on Thursday or Saturday afternoons from noon until 4 p.m. or call ahead to schedule a visit and you’ll get a glimpse of what life was like for early residents of this rural community.

Of course everyone wants to know if Martin is related to the Fred Martin in Barberton, from which we hear so much over the radio and TV. Yes, he is Fred’s father and actually ran the Chrysler dealership in Barberton until its sale to its current owner Adam Huff, who was Paul’s general manager.

In addition to its antique photographs and books, the original town hall bell, a granary and double-bayed corn crib, a millstone from Plum Creek mill, antique tools, a memorial herb garden and the nicely preserved New England style Michael Barn are also displayed here.

Martin has crammed a lot into just 95 years, and he is still going. He’s in the process of donating a parcel of land in the back of his country home in Bath to UA. “They don’t know what to do with it, but I’ve got a plan,” he concludes. And I’ll bet that it’s a good one.

Just past the Kelso, at the corner of 43 and Tallmadge Road, is Brimfield’s Town Square Park. Set on two acres near the township hall, it offers shade trees, picnic tables, a children’s play area and horseshoe pits. The focal point of the park is its gazebo. Its roof was preserved from the original bandstand built at the turn of the century.

Building a Future Habitat for Humanity volunteers give local families more than just a home; they give them hope.

A

s a teacher in Dawson, Ga., in the 1970s, Clive Rainey was having trouble reaching students who didn’t seem to want to learn. When he went to visit the children’s parents, he saw the run-down conditions where the students lived.

Rainey then realized that he needed to address the kids’ needs on a more basic level if he wanted to be effective as a teacher. In an effort to do that, on April 1, 1977 he became the first

volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, which Millard and Linda Fuller had just founded about 25 miles away in Americus, Ga. “I jokingly tell audiences that I was just the first fool to come along,” Rainey says, playing on the fact that his start date was on April Fool’s Day. “Look at all of us now.”

Rainey has since helped build houses throughout the United States, Africa and Latin America. He doesn’t know

the exact number of houses he has worked on, but says he tries to get every Habitat volunteer “to own” the entire number of 300,000 houses the organization has built and to know that every house is part of the much larger figure.

“You put your little part in and it multiplies so many times over,” he says. “Even as you’re making a difference with that one child and one family, if you look at our work globally, literally you’ve changed the world.”

It’s that ability to reach out to families and help change the world that prompted Tom and Sue Strauss and Tom and Ginny Knoll to become involved in the organization. Together, the couples are co-chairs of Habitat for Humanity’s current campaign to raise funds for the acquisition and renovation of its new headquarters, which will be located at 2301 Romig Road.

Sue, who has been a Habitat volunteer for five years and has been on the board since 2005, says the organization was a perfect fit for her because she enjoys working with her hands and had been looking for meaningful work with a Christ-focused mission. It was only a matter of time until she encouraged her husband, Tom Strauss, to become involved as well. As CEO of Summa Health System, Strauss was familiar with Habitat as an organization that Summa has long supported. In fact, Strauss and other staff members have even worked on Habitat homes for fellow Summa employees. “It breaks down the hierarchy and shows that we’re all in this together,” he says.

Tom Knoll began volunteering with Habitat two years ago, and encouraged his wife, Ginny, who has association with Stan Hywet, Mobile Meals and other organizations, to do the same.

As a partner at Stark & Knoll law firm, Knoll has arranged team-building exercises where employees spend the day working on a Habitat home. “I think any time you can touch the things you’re working for it makes a difference, gives you a sense of accomplishment and a better realization that you are doing some good work,” Knoll says of the hands-on aspect of volunteering with Habitat.

The Strausses and the Knolls hope that during this capital campaign community members will not only donate

funds to help Habitat become more effective, but also contribute their time and efforts to help build a future for local families. “It’s the gift that keeps on giving, as the saying goes,” Sue explains. “Volunteers with Habitat work with families to help them achieve their dream of owning their own home. ...On that day they are consistently overwhelmed with gratitude and hope, expressing how blessed they feel to have accomplished what they once thought was an impossible goal. The hope that they have extends to their children who witness the outcome of hard work, dedication and determination to make a better life for themselves.”

Basketball as Metaphor

“M

ore Than A Game,” a funny and touching documentary about the “Fab Five”— LeBron James, Sian Cotton, Dru Joyce III, Romeo Travis and Willie McGee, opens in theaters in Akron and Cleveland on Oct. 2.

The film chronicles the players’ seven-year journey, from the Salvation Army gym on Maple Street where they met and played in grade school, through their senior year at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School where they helped bring a national basketball championship home.

Written and produced by Akron native and first-time filmmaker, Kristopher Belman, the documentary weaves together early game footage and home movies with tightly shot interviews of players, coaches and their families.

Cinematic scenes of Akron add visual transitions in a way that’s especially fun for hometown audiences to watch.

The storyline, offering glimpses into the public and behind-the-scenes struggles of the players and their coaches, is all the more poignant because it hits so close to home. The pacing is brisk through all but a few moments near the end.

“More Than a Game” got rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2008.

Bringing it back to Akron was the realization of a dream for Belman, who moved to Los Angeles in 2001.

“Six years into the project, people wanted to buy the footage,” he told the audience at a red-carpet screening at the Akron Civic Theater on Aug. 20. He held on for the right to tell the story the way he believed it deserved to be told. His vision stays true to that of Coach Dru Joyce II, for whom it was always about more than basketball. This is a story of friendship, family, loyalty and commitment—things that last.—JD

he Cuyahoga Valley National Park didn’t make the cut in Ken Burns’ latest documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” which runs through Oct. 2 on PBS stations across the country, but Western Reserve Public Media (WNEO/WEAO Channels 45/49) has created its own onehour documentary on the Cuyahoga Valley—the only national park in Ohio.

Called “Generations: Cuyahoga Valley National Park,” the film traces the path from the park’s formation in 1974 through its evolution over the years and hopes for the future.

Producer Duilio Mariola interviewed park employees and visitors as well as historians, environmentalists, artists, business and government leaders to examine everything from the park’s natural features to its social history. He used high-definition cameras to capture the beauty of the park’s natural wonders, including its crooked river, layers of ledges, waterfalls and centuries-old forests.

His aerial shots were taken from the Goodyear blimp.

“Generations” will be broadcast on WNEO/WEAO on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 4 at 9 p.m.—JD

Artists of Rubber City has leased a gallery space on the third floor of Summit Artspace. When we talked with AoRC president Don Parsisson in September, the gallery was still unnamed and the group was finishing up on repairs, painting and cleaning in time for its opening exhibit this month.

The exhibit features the work of Miller Horns, winner of this year’s Arts Alive! Outstanding Visual Artist Award. Horns’ one-man show opens Friday, Oct. 2, from 5-7 p.m. and runs through Saturday, Nov. 7.

Hangtime Cellars 20 0 5 Chardonnay 20 07 Pinot Noir “Hangtime” is a term used by winemakers to determine how long the grapes are on the vines before they are picked. “The longer time on the vine, the more concentrated the fruit character, resulting in wines of distinctive, delicious varietal expression,” says winemaker Tony Coltrin of Hangtime Cellars in Napa, Calif. “It’s always a delicate calculation. If you pick the grapes too soon, the wine may not achieve their full aroma and flavors. Too much hangtime, and they may become overripe.”

The grapes used for Hangtime’s 2005 Chardonnay average about 140 days on the vine in California’s Central Coast. The coast’s climate is a little cooler, allowing the grapes to mature more slowly and develop a nice fruit balance as they take time to ripen. Hangtime Chardonnay pairs well with grilled fish, scallops and pasta dishes with a white wine sauce.

Hangtime’s Pinot Noir is a fickle wine to make, and that’s why Coltrin uses great care during the process.

Hangtime sources juice from carefully chosen vineyards from all over California. This wine has a bright fruit flavor and nice balance, making it an ideal choice for hanging out with friends. Enjoy the 2007 Pinot Noir with pork chops or ribeye steaks.

For the Beckwith family, who has owned and operated Beckwith Orchards for five generations, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

A

woman once told Sally Beckwith that Aug. 1 is her favorite day of the year. That’s the day when Beckwith Orchards opens for the season. “By being seasonal, there’s a real interest and excitement to support us through the fall,” says Sally, the orchard’s general manager.

Beckwith is the fi fth generation of her family to run the orchard started by her great-great-grandfather Frank Beckwith nearly 125 years ago. It’s not very often you hear of a family business lasting that long, and Sally cites her family’s cautious business approach as part of the reason why theirs has sustained. “I think in general, we’ve been quite conservative in the way we’ve expanded,” she says. “We don’t add something else or buy

new equipment until we have the ability to purchase it. We all have a real interest in our history and our tradition that has been here for several generations now.”

That tradition continues with Sally and her six siblings, all of whom she says have a genuine interest in keeping the business going as a family farm. All seven siblings work in the orchard, though Sally is the only one who doesn’t have an additional career. And although Sally doesn’t have any children of her own, she does have 14 nieces and nephews who she believes will carry on the family business. However, she believes future generations will likely have other careers in addition to operating the orchard.

Currently 12 members of the Beckwith family work at the orchard along with about 15 others. In addition, there are seven individuals who lead school tours. “We have about 4,000 people come through each fall,” says Sally, who adds that groups range in age from preschoolers to senior citizens and “Red Hat” clubs, though the primary school tour groups are preschool through second grade.

Beckwith is not a pick-your-own orchard, but visitors are welcome to stroll through the orchards and shop in the on-site farm market and bakery. And visitors should

Fresh Apple Cider Apple cider is essentially unrefined apple juice made from several types of apples. It can be served cold or hot, mulled with cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, nutmeg or other spices. September and October are peak times for apple cider, and although it’s often available at the supermarket, nothing beats fresh apple cider from local orchards.

Unfortunately, these days it’s difficult to find orchards that are able to press their own cider. Most orchards carry cider made from their own apples, but because of FDA pasteurization requirements, many orchards lack the necessary equipment and are unable to press their apples and make the cider on-site. For instance, apples from Beckwith Orchard are taken to Haus Orchard and Cider Mill in Canfield to be pressed and pasteurized, but are then brought back to Kent where the cider is sold in Beckwith’s farm market. Haus Orchard is located at 6742 W. Calla Road in Canfield. In Portage County, Monroe’s Orchard & Farm Market, located at 6313 Pioneer Trail in Hiram, also makes cider on-site.

come hungry because at Beckwith Orchards they believe sampling is key.

“Let your tongue and teeth tell you what you’re going home with,” Sally advises, quoting her father’s old saying. “Some people come in looking for the same variety name. If we don’t have them, we like to slice some of the newer varieties that they haven’t been introduced to yet.”

Although Beckwith Orchards is certainly known for the many apple varieties grown on site, they harvest much more than that. They also grow peaches, plum and pear trees as well as 15 acres of field corn and a 20-plot community vegetable garden run by the Kent Garden Club. The vegetables are mainly for the gardeners’ consumption, but any leftovers are sold in the market along with a few items that are not grown on-

site. “If we don’t grow it here, it’s from as close by as possible,” Sally says. “We try to support Portage County and Ohio farmers. We focus on selling things really fresh and in-season.”

The number of apples and other fruits Beckwith harvests varies depending on the season. For instance, 2008 was a very strong crop, and 2009 appears to be strong as well. Other years have not always been as good. “Bad weather in April could cause you to lose a fair amount of your crops,” Sally explains. Before being sold, all the fruit from the orchard is washed, graded and sorted according to size. Those that don’t make the cut are sold as seconds, or baking bargains.

In addition to the market and orchards, visitors can enjoy Beckwith’s corn maze, which takes up about 3 acres of the property. At $2 per person, it’s inexpensive entertainment, and Sally says this year’s maze is the most difficult one they’ve had. Although the family does not have a pumpkin patch, they bring in local pumpkins, gourds and Indian corn, and all are available in the farm market.

Beckwith Orchards is open seven days a week from Aug. 1 to Dec. 24. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Nov. 1, when the orchards begin closing at 5 p.m. due to the daylight-saving time change. Make Believe Creative, hand-made costumes are the specialty at Akron Design & Costume.

D

eborah Meredith anticipates seeing a lot of Michael Jacksons walking the streets this Halloween. The King of Pop’s sudden death this summer has led to an increased demand for MJ wigs and silver gloves. “Sorry, Farrah,” Meredith says, referring to the former “Charlie’s Angels” star who died around the same time as Jackson.

With 30 years of experience making costumes by hand and owning her own costume shop, Meredith has become somewhat of an expert in the industry. In 1978, she got her start by creating “Fruit of the Loom” costumes for a group of friends. At their suggestion, she started a business making costumes out of her house. During her first year, she rented out 30 costumes. That number eventually grew to 700, and that’s when Meredith moved her business to storefront across from the Acme store on Manchester Road. In time, she outgrew that shop as well, and moved just down the street to 3425 Manchester 44

Meredith’s skills are all self-taught, though she is a member of the National Costumers Association—an organization that is instrumental in the teaching and sharing of ideas among costume designers. “Essentially that was my training,” says Meredith, the group’s current second vice president.

“We’re kind of a network of creative people,” Rob Lehr, the shop’s marketing director, says of the organization.

Creative indeed. The shop is a fantasyland for anyone who loves to play dress-up. Need a historically accurate period costume? A military uniform? An ivy wall costume? A pickle, perhaps? If you want it, they’ve got it. And with 300 wigs, 1600 hats, plus makeup and footwear galore, they utilize all the space—even the ceiling. “We have as much stuff as a 20,000 square-foot store,” Meredith says. “We’ve got the variety, and we’ve got the ability to fix things.”

You see, at this shop they don’t just sell costumes; they create them by hand. In the back of the store is what Meredith calls the “making magic room.” That’s where all the fabric, fur, feathers and other materials come together to make Meredith’s creative ideas a wearable reality.

“Ninety percent of our rental costumes are made right here because I don’t want to look like any other shop,” she says.

“We have a lot of respect and pride in our product,” Lehr adds.

Surprisingly, Halloween isn’t the busiest time at Akron Design & Costume. That right actually belongs to the winter months when the staff begins working on costumes for theater performances, local and national. “The day after Halloween, people want Santa costumes,” Meredith says. “As soon as Christmas is over, musical season starts. We actually work more hours in March than at Halloween because we do theater.”

mostly with costumes for various productions, as well as ethnic wear, food-related costumes and items that have been retired. Each season, Meredith and her staff are busy altering past costumes for theater productions, and even making some new ones. On a recent visit, Meredith spent the afternoon re-curling the wig for Madame de la Grande Bouche from “Beauty and the Beast” before shipping it out for a show.

But Meredith doesn’t stop there. She’s also a master of mascots. For instance, she was the “mother of the first Orbit,” back when the Akron Aeros mascot was called “The Blast.” And she has created mascots for several local high schools, as well as Acme’s Buck the Dog, Buffy the Dog, and the cream sticks that run the field at Canal Park.

Meredith has dressed characters for a wide range of musicals and plays.

No costume is complete without the right accessories, and Akron Design & Costume has got those, too. The front of the store is lined with row after row of everything you need including masks, body parts, glasses, bags, shoes, tights in every color and more. Because of the shop’s low prices and wide selection of accessories, it’s popular among area roller derby girls and local musicians looking for items that will wear well on stage.

Costumes from Meredith’s shop have even appeared in a number of commercials and television shows including “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Cosby” and others.

Once, David Letterman’s crew rented a hippo costume for an episode of the late-night talk show, and gave a shout out to Akron Design & Costume on the air. (Check out www. akrondesign.com for a clip.)

Considering that Meredith has designed costumes and mascots for people all over the country, it only makes sense that she created one for her own business. “Every shop has a gimmick,” Meredith says in reference to the large spider that hangs on the store’s outdoor sign. “Due to zoning, I couldn’t have anything on the roof, so I adopted the spider as a mascot. It has been there ever since.”

als shape the minds of the next generation and deserve recognition. This month we are acknowledge local teachers who stand out not just to their students but also to the co-workers who have nominated them.

Christine Spinner Seventh and Eighth Grade Teacher St. Hilary School

C

hristine Spinner worked at a Cleveland television station right out of college, but soon realized what she really wanted to do was work with kids. She went back to school to become a teacher and hasn’t looked back. Spinner says the most rewarding part about teaching is when everything in her classroom seems to click, and her students become excited and engaged. “This is when I realize that I am exactly where I belong,” she explains.

“This is what I was meant to do.”

Each Christmas, Spinner’s eighth grade students adopt a family for the holiday. By raising money to provide the family with gifts and household items, the students experience how much better it feels to give than to receive.

As a literature teacher who loves reading and books, Spinner says her biggest struggle in the classroom is to compete with all of today’s technology. “So many students are missing out on great books because they don’t take the time to just sit with a book and read,” she says.

Susan Wechter Clinical Assistance Professor, Division of Nursing Walsh University

A

lthough Susan Wechter has only been teaching at Walsh University for four years, she has already made a significant impact on her students, and has even received the 2009 Outstanding Educator of the Year Award.

Wechter had more than 20 years experience in the nursing field before she came to the university, though she was no stranger to teaching. She started out by showing families how to care for their babies in the newborn ICU, followed by various other teaching positions in the nursing field.

She says she always knew one day she would give back to her profession by teaching nursing students. And it is the relationship with her students that makes the career so rewarding for her. “I want students to nurture their minds as well as care for themselves physically, emotionally, spiritually, culturally and economically,” she says. “I sincerely care about the students who cross my path.”

Jason Anderson U.S. History, Government and Economics Teacher Archbishop Hoban High School

J

ason Anderson’s two loves have always been working with young people and retelling stories of the past.

That passion motivated him to take the advice of family and friends and become a history teacher.

Anderson is known for assigning special projects throughout the school year that students actually look forward to completing. One of the projects consists of researching, conducting interviews and creating a documentary on a historical Ohio event. The students then produce a video that elementary and middle school teachers can use in their classrooms.

Anderson says one of his most memorable moments as a teacher came when he took his students on a field trip aboard the USS Constellation, which is the last surviving ship of the Civil War. They worked on the ship, slept in hammocks and ate as sailors in the 1860s did. But, this isn’t Anderson’s only unconventional means of teaching. He is also known for his first-person historical impressions and dressing in Colonial-era attire. Anderson says teaching for him “is not a job, and really it is not a profession, it is my life.”

Missy Bragg Fourth Grade Teacher Canton Country Day School

M

issy Bragg does more than just teach at Canton Country Day School. She is committed to enhancing the school’s curriculum and her students’ learning through the inclusion of the latest technological tools. “My teaching environment allows me to understand the uniqueness of each child and to help them work toward their greatest potential,” Bragg says.

Not only do Bragg’s students look to her as a mentor, but the school’s faculty also rely on her to assist with applying technology. She says she doesn’t mind helping other faculty members, though, because it allows her to reach out to other students throughout the school.

Bragg credits her school family for helping her become a Great Educator. “Canton Country Day School is devoted to the individual growth of all students and empowers me with the resources and professional development necessary to help me be the best teacher I can be,” she says.

Mary Beth Rollick Mathematics Professor Kent State University

M

ary Beth Rollick truly cares about all students’ education, not just those who take her classes. The majority of math classes Rollick teaches at Kent State University are for students who one day want to be math teachers themselves.

She realizes how important it is for her to be a good teacher so the students in her classes can one day be good teachers, too.

Rollick is known for making math fun by using hands-on concepts to teach, and for taking as much time as needed outside of the classroom to give students extra guidence. “The biggest struggle is having enough time during the day to help each student,” Rollick says. Her hard work does not go unnoticed or unappreciated, though. In addition to this honor, Rollick also received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 2008.

Douglas Worthington 11th and 12th Grade Teacher Walsh Jesuit High School

B

y the time Douglas Worthington was in third grade, he had already developed a love for history. As time went on, he decided teaching would be an optimal way to pursue his passion.

Throughout his academic career, Worthington benefitted from many good teachers who further convinced him that teaching would be an honorable and worthwhile profession. And Worthington says he can only hope that he has made an impact on his students much the same way his teachers made an impact him.

After what one group of his students did for him, it is safe to say that he has. One of the most memorable moments of his teaching career happened when his students gave him a Christmas present, a replica of the sword used in the movie “Braveheart.” “How more than one hundred students could have kept it a secret—even my wife knew about it—is beyond my ken,” Worthington says.

Irma Thomas Spanish Teacher Western Reserve Academy

A

s a child growing up in Costa Rica, Irma Thomas often “played school,” so it was no surprise when she became a teacher. She says loves teaching Spanish because she feels knowing the language makes it easier for students to become involved in the global society. Along with that, she says the most rewarding part of her job is when past students tell her how taking her class encouraged them to work in a field where speaking Spanish is essential. “What a privilege it is for me to have been a drop in that bucket,” she explains.

In addition to teaching at Western Reserve Academy, Thomas travels with some of the school’s students to her native country so they can improve their Spanish-speaking skills. After 38 years of teaching, Thomas believes educators are just students who are always a work in progress. “I love what I do,” she says, “and I am always looking for ways to improve and to make needed adjustments to reach my students.”

D

iane Stadelman says the recipe to being a good teacher is a big helping of patience and kindness along with a few cups of sense of humor and flexibility. She keeps her second graders enthusiastic and entertained throughout the school year by applying that recipe every day.

Stadelman also keeps her students looking forward to the end of the year so they can complete their project—writing their own books straight from their imagination. Their books even include a cover page, a dedication page and an about-theauthor page. Her students have fun writing their books, but they really enjoy reading each other’s books as well. Stadelman says she could not picture herself in any other career besides a teaching. She jokes that she wouldn’t mind teaching somewhere warmer, but then she would miss out on snow days.

“C

ate is a natural teacher,” writes Amy Hecky, director of admissions at Spring Garden and the parent of a child in Hunko’s class. “It is apparent in every interaction she has with the children.”

Hunko greets her students every day with a personal handshake and a warm smile. She says she understands that every child is unique so her main goal as a teacher is to try and teach each individual with a learning style that best suits them. Though, she says being able to tend to each student’s needs while staying on track with her lesson plans requires flexibility and creativity.

At Spring Garden, Hunko has the opportunity to teach the same group of children for seven years.

She says her most memorable moment as a teacher was watching the eighth graders graduate. “To see them as a group of healthy and energetic teenagers who were happily anticipating their next major step in life was incredible,” she says.

Melane Francis First Grade Teacher St. Sebastian School

M

elane Francis always knew she wanted to be a teacher, so she could make a difference in children’s lives. After 40 years of teaching, Francis has done just that. She often receives letters from former students thanking her for the impact she made on their lives. Francis says hearing from students later on in life is one of the most memorable things about her career.

She says it is also very rewarding to see students grow and change throughout the year, and to watch their faces light up once they grasp a concept. She prides herself in being able to accept children as they are, though she says doing so is one of her biggest struggles as a teacher.

To compensate she has to determine the individual learning styles of the students and then give them the tools they need to succeed. “I give them a structure that makes them feel safe and secure, and within that structure there is flexibility and fun,” Francis explains.

Elaine Fippin Ninth and 10th Grade Teacher Our Lady of the Elms High School

E

laine Fippin is a very passionate teacher. So much so, one of her biggest struggles in the classroom is that she gets so immersed in a piece of literature or topic the class is studying that she finds herself behind in her lesson plans. Whatever Fippin is doing must be working, though, because she also has had many students express their gratitude after graduation through notes, letters and e-mails. One student who took theater classes in college wrote to thank Fippin for making her feel prepared, confident and professional compared to her classmates.

Fippin says one of the most rewarding things about teaching is seeing students fall in love with literature, especially books they never would have read on their own. She is also humbled by the things she learns from her students. “Every year, my students teach me things,” Fippin says. “It is incredibly rewarding to learn from them.”

This year both communities are preparing for their 10th Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event.

The Akron walk takes place on Oct. 10 at Lock 3, and the Canton walk is Oct. 17 at Canton McKinley High School.

The past nine events in Akron and Canton combined have raised $2.9 million dollars with more than 300,000 feet walked!

At these two American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walks, thousands of local breast cancer survivors, volunteers, businesses and community members will unite to fight breast cancer and save lives. This noncompetitive, inspirational event raises awareness and funds to fight breast cancer and it provides hope to all people facing the disease.

More than 192,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year, and more than 40,000 will die from the disease. Funds raised through Making Strides will help the American Cancer Society save lives and create more birthdays by helping people stay well 58

94.9FM on-air personality Lynn Kelly has hosted the Akron Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk since its inception, giving a solid decade of dedication to breast cancer awareness.

“It all started when I was at WKDD,” Kelly recalls. “John Shea, the general manager at the time, really encouraged us to use our talents and sphere of influence to take a community project or cause to the next level.”

When Kathy Bouker, who was then the American Cancer Society’s executive director, approached Kelly to help with the new walk they were starting to support breast cancer, Kelly says she knew it was the cause she would champion. “My grandmother and aunt both had mastectomies in the 1960s,” she explains. “Even as a child, I knew the devastating effects of this disease.”

Akron’s first Making Strides walk was at Cascade Plaza. It was small, but successful, and Kelly left the event with a positive feeling. “By the second year, the community had truly embraced Making Strides, and I was totally hooked,” she says.

With 20 years of experience as an on-air personality for different radio stations, Kelly has a special ability to communicate to the public over the airwaves.

“I have the unique opportunity to talk to thousands of people every day,” she says. “Even if just one person finds their breast cancer early because they heard me taking about the importance of early detection on-air, then I have done my job.”

Kelly has also been instrumental in getting her current station, WQMX 94.9 FM, on board with the cause. Genetic Breast Cancer Most breast cancer is sporadic. However, 10 percent of breast cancer is due to an inherited change (mutation) in a single gene, most commonly the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. I knew I’d get the same care without having to go to downtown Akron.”

ina Ball is a believer. She believes that everyone was put on earth to fulfill a purpose. She always believed her purpose was to be a wife, mother, daughter and a good employee.

Now, she knows she has another purpose. And, that was revealed to her last year when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She now knows her purpose is to tell her story so other women will benefit from it.

All Summa Health System hospitals provide cancer care and patients can work with their doctor to choose the facility that best meets their needs. Because the system hospitals work together, if the patient ultimately needs services available at another hospital, the patient can be accommodated quickly and easily.

Though there’s no breast cancer in her family, Ball consistently followed the recommendations of her doctor and the American Cancer Society, namely: • A monthly self-breast exam • A clinical breast exam at her annual physical • A baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40, and • An annual mammogram after turning 40.

“I was never particularly concerned about getting breast cancer because I have no family history. But I take care of my health and know it’s important to follow the recommendations,” Ball says. “I was stunned when I found a lump.”

Ball’s doctor ordered a diagnostic mammogram, an ultrasound and, ultimately, a biopsy.

When she got her test results—cancer, fast-growing, late stage 3—Ball couldn’t believe it. “I kept asking, ‘Why me’?”

But this wasn’t the time for questions. Ball needed aggressive treatment and she needed it quickly. She chose Summa Barberton Hospital’s Parkview Center for her care.

“I heard about cancer care at Summa and knew about Barberton Hospital from past experience,” Ball says.

“It was more convenient for me to go to Barberton and 68

Just as important as the treatment itself, are the people who provide it. Summa’s medical experts include medical oncologists/hematologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons and radiologists. Experienced caregivers such as nurses, technologists and technicians work together to provide the optimum care and treatment for each patient.

Over seven months, Ball underwent six rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, surgery to remove the tissue that had surrounded the tumor, followed by 36 radiation treatments.

Today, Ball is cancer-free and reflective about her experience.

“I truly believe I was sent to Summa’s Parkview for a reason,” Ball says. “I trusted their experts and found their support made such a difference to me. They were there for me every step of the way.

“We need to take care of our health. Early detection is so important. Imagine if I hadn’t done the self-exam or had a mammogram. To others who are diagnosed with cancer I’d say, ‘I know how you feel but you can get through this.’

Know Your Dog’s True Color Joel Silverman offers tips for training your pooch.

S

it. Stay. Good dog! Having your dog listen is a lot easier said than done, right? Well, with a lot of patience and a little reinforcement, you could be having your dog doing back flips in no time. OK, maybe your dog won’t be doing back flips, but you get the point. Taking the time to train your dog—and train him right—can go a long way.

Joel Silverman, animal trainer and host of Animal Planet’s “Good Dog U” and author of “What Color is Your Dog?” says the first step to training your dog is to build a good relationship with him.

“Dogs want to please you and make you happy,” Silverman explains. He says owners need to have a strong bond with their dogs before they can begin training. If not, the dog will be less motivated to please his owner once the training begins.

People often think that once a dog learns certain behaviors, they can’t be broken of the habit, but Silverman explains that the owners just need to reconnect with their dogs. “You can always get the relationship back,” Silverman says. “You can mess up, but then reinvent your relationship with your dog.” He says the key to doing that is making things fun for the dog, and just like you would with a person, show that you care. Luckily, dogs tend to be a little more forgiving than people.

Another misconception is that you can’t teach old dogs new tricks. Silverman says you can teach any age dog; you just need to have a strong relationship built. This is something that is very important to remember when adopting a dog from a shelter. Older dogs tend to get overlooked, but that should not be the case. Instead, he says dogs should be chosen because of their personalities. Silverman suggests people adopt dogs whose personalities mirror their own. He suggests someone with a laidback personality get a laid back dog.

Whereas someone more outgoing could handle a dog with a louder personality.

Silverman uses colors to categorize dogs’ personality traits. The colors range from blue, which is a scared dog, to red, which is a high-strung dog.

Because each personality type requires a different training style, it’s important to know what color your dog is before you begin training. Again, just like people, you need to deal with a dog that is shy in a different manner than a very friendly dog. Blue dogs need a lot of motivation, but red need a lot of discipline. The goal is to get your dog to have a yellow personality, which is laidback and easy going. He says it can be challenging to get blue or red dogs to be yellow, but with proper training you can at least bring them in a step closer on either side to green or orange.

Once you have gone through step one, building a good relationship with your dog, and step two, discovering what type of personality your dog has, you Akron Life & Leisure

can begin to train your furry friend.

Silverman suggests starting off by teaching your dog to sit and stay. He says these are not only the two most important behaviors, but they are usually the most natural positions for a dog to learn. While training your dog, you need to give him reinforcements when he does what he is told. So when your dog sits for you, reaffirm the behavior with a, “Good dog!” Then give him his treat, but only while he is still in the seated position. Silverman emphasizes that you must give your pet his reward while he is still doing the right behavior or it defeats the purpose. If he gets up and then you give him the treat, he will think he is being rewarded because he got up.

Silverman also advises pet owners to set a goal and achieve it in one session, or about five minutes. “People think the more time they spend training the better, but that’s not true,” Silverman explains. He says if the dog does not learn the behavior in that time, the goal is either set too high or the owner needs to assess how he or she is training the dog. Silverman says some people need direction when it comes to training their dogs and that is when watching TV shows and videos, reading books or even seeking professional assistance can make a difference. It is important that the owner is the one who does the hands on training, though, even if a professional helps. Silverman reiterates that it is the bond the dog has with his owner that really helps with the training. So, having someone else do it will not be as beneficial in the long run.

Once your dog has mastered his new behaviors, Silverman recommends laying low; you don’t want to overdo it.

And he says pet owners need to remember that a healthy diet and exercise are also essential parts to training a dog.

“An overweight, lethargic dog is less apt to want to do anything,” he says.

And despite what some people think, “it’s not the size of the animal, it’s the personality.” So, whether you have a Chihuahua or a Saint Bernard, obeying Silverman’s commands can help turn your dog into man’s best friend.

hristopher James Lees appreciates contemporary American music and regularly collaborates with living composers to premiere new works. “I love the fact that (live performance) is a communal experience for a bunch of musicians and the audience. Few things are as powerful,” Lees says.

Starting his third season here, Lees currently serves as associate conductor for the Akron Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Akron Youth Symphony and director of orchestras at Kent State University.

Lees exhibits “a rare combination of talent, disciplined hard work and an open enthusiastic personality,” Christopher Wilkins, music director for the Akron Symphony, says.

Thomas Clark, president of the Greater Akron Musical Association, agrees, adding that Lees is “truly a gift to the Akron community... so young in years and yet so mature in abilities.”

A talented musician on piano and organ, Lees and fiancée Lindsay Kesselman often perform together in churches and chamber music series throughout northeast Ohio.

Outstanding Visual Artist

Miller Horns

A

pioneer in the use of electrostatics as an art medium, Miller Horns’ 11-foot image of a school bus brightens up the waiting room at Children’s Hospital. His Millennium design was selected for Akron’s First Night buttons in 2000. Other large scale works have been commissioned by local corporations.

But the project that is foremost in his mind these days was envisioned more than 10 years ago. That project, an interactive sculpture, would commemorate the old Matthews Hotel on Howard Street where black entertainers like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington stayed from the 1930s to the ’50s when they performed in Akron. With proposals, prototypes, specs and contacts in place, Horns believes he may finally be close to securing funding.

Horns’ life and his work, much of it autobiographical, are studies in tenacity. “Persistence,” he says, “I think that’s what I’m known for.”

Winner of a prestigious Rome Prize in 1989, Horns got his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1986. His one-man show opens at the new Artists of Rubber City gallery on the third floor above Summit Artspace on Oct. 2.

Marcianne Herr

M

arcianne Herr has that rare gift of being equally comfortable on stage, in the classroom, behind the scenes and in the audience. She has exercised her wide-ranging talents in a myriad of ways over the years.

As a musician and performer, Herr was a key member of the Rosewood Consort, an early music ensemble that performed on period instruments. She played with them for 25 years until 2005.

Herr taught visual arts in a number of schools and served as Director of Education at the Akron Art Museum where she introduced and managed many innovative programs. She especially enjoyed taking groups to

rowing up in Orange County, Calif., in the 1980s, Jerry Wong immersed himself in the piano to escape the normal tensions of adolescence.

“The discipline that it required was engaging and demanding, but also stimulating,” Wong recalls. “I found my voice there. I found my expression through that time.”

Practicing four or more hours a day, Wong honed his considerable talents to become an accomplished chamber musician and collaborative pianist. Today, his work is acclaimed by critics who describe his concerts as “eloquent and elegant” with “passion and introspection...sensitivity and a finely honed sense of style.” His performances delight audiences, locally and internationally.

Recipient of this year’s Outstanding Artist in Music Award, Wong is an assistant professor of Piano at Kent State University. He has taught classes at The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music and is a sought after lecturer and adjudicator.

Teaching and performing are like cross-training for Wong. “My students keep me on my toes,” he says.

Her strategic contributions to the Tuesday Musical Association helped to preserve and revitalize the group whose concert series she calls “the best of the best.” She is currently working on getting its history published in time for the 125th anniversary in 2012.

When she’s not working, you’ll find the woman, who plays piano and tenor sax and “discovered opera in high school,” among the local fans who attend simulcasts from the Metropolitan Opera at the Regal Cinemas in Montrose.

Outstanding Ar tist in Theatre

J

im Volkert began performing Shakespeare in the Cleveland area at a very young age and remembers being enamored early on by the elaborate costuming and sets. For Volkert, whose parents were both involved in community theater, acting was a way of life.

Today, Volkert works full-time in theater. He has acted and is company manager for The Illusion Factory, a professional touring company for children. When you work with a children’s audience, you instantly know whether they’re with you, Volkert says. “The response is immediate.”

In addition to acting, Volkert writes—he’s working on a Halloween play for the Dover Players. He is also an acting instructor and puppeteer for his own company, Lake Erie Actors and Puppeteers, LEAP. Volkert recently picked up an excellence in scenic design award for his work on “God’s Favorite” at the Western Reserve Playhouse.

For a guy who bores easily, the theater always offers something new. “I like doing everything,” he says. “If it’s in theater, acting, directing or technical stuff, I do it.”

Cynthia Knight

“Y

ou have to temper the sciences with the arts,” explains Cynthia Knight who says her family and her alma mater, Our Lady of the Elms, gave her an “excellent background in choral music and art” from an early age.

It follows then, that this 2009 Patron Award recipient would direct much of her giving to the Tuesday Musical Association, Akron Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music Society of Ohio. She even jokingly calls herself “the godmother of the Summit Choral Society” having been an early Choral Society donor and visionary.

Knight’s music room and gardens have been the sites for multiple fundraisers, concerts and special celebratory gatherings in support of the arts scene in Akron. Her donations have made an impact at the Akron Art Museum, University of Akron and Elms as well.

Why does she choose to give so generously? “That’s our place in life. If you have the means, you share,” Knight says. “Everything is a gift, so you use it to its best advantage.”

at Lehnhart loves the look she sees in students’ eyes when they arrive for a live Children’s Concert Society performance at the Akron Civic Theatre. For many of them, this is their first visit to the Civic or first time hearing live orchestral music.

Fostering music appreciation in young people by giving them exposure to high-quality, live musical performances has been the core mission of Children’s Concert Society since 1947.

Today, the society hosts spring and fall concerts at the Civic for fourth- and fifth-graders and sponsors an In-School Concert Series with 15 different musical options for elementary, middle and high school students. They also do an after-school musical outreach event and operate a Scholastic Composers Contest each year. Last year, there were 76 entries in that contest—everything from simple songs sung by their youngest creators to orchestral pieces submitted by high school entrants.

Reaching out to area children in a myriad of ways, the Children’s Concert Society is this year’s Arts Alive! Outreach Award winner.

O

n a personal level, Ron Allen looks forward to attending a variety of cultural events around town because he sees them as “opportunities to grow and be happy in the process. They make life interesting and exciting,” he says.

As a champion and behind-the-scenes leader in the arts, this Akron attorney has translated his personal passion into professional action. Allen has led the boards of the Akron Symphony Orchestra, the Akron Art Museum and the Akron Roundtable, and served on the boards of countless others. He has offered his professional expertise on a pro bono basis to help local arts organizations avoid expensive legal fees.

He supports the arts financially and promotes public support for the arts as well.

Andrea Wlaszyn

W

hen it comes to leadership, Andrea Wlaszyn credits her mentor, Mary Ann Jackson, for “being a great role model to learn from in that capacity.” The two women became friends after working on the Defy Gravity Gala for the Akron Art Museum’s 2007 reopening. Wlaszyn’s contributions to that event and clear-headed analysis afterward led to improvements in future planning, according to Museum director and CEO Mitchell Kahan.

Committed, effervescent and tireless are words that community leaders use to describe Wlaszyn, recipient of this year’s Rising Young Star/Leadership Award. A past president of ArtsCetera, a group that encourages young professionals to get involved in the arts, Wlaszyn also chaired of the Akron Symphony Orchestra’s 2008 Fanfare event and helped plan its Crescendo 2009 fundraiser. She is co-chair of this year’s Arts Alive! event.

Wlaszyn believes the cultural landscape in our area is rich and dynamic.

“Many people don’t give Akron the credit it deserves,” she says. “Really, there’s something for everybody.”

Collaborative Project Award

FUZE! Series

P

eople who had never been inside the Akron Art Museum or attended a Tuesday Musical concert came out to support FUZE! an experimental new concert series that sold out in all three of its inaugural season performances.

“There was palpable buzz as people entered the museum for these concerts; they weren’t sure what to expect but they were excited to hear something new,” Barbara Feld, Tuesday Musical Association’s executive director, says of this collaborative project between her organization and the Akron Art Museum.

A merger of music, multi-media and art, FUZE! concerts showcase young classically-trained musicians testing new musical frontiers. In its first year, FUZE! brought in ETHEL, a New York-based string quartet, cellist/composer Maya Beiser and SO Percussion, which plays world music on an array of instruments and found objects.

Thoughtfully crafted, FUZE! events begin with an intimate hour-long concert in the museum’s 160-seat theater and end with a cocktail reception that allows listeners and performers to interact.

Jim Urban

W

hile Jim Urban shows guests the four bronzes at Stan Hywet made by Paul Manship, he makes it a point to tell them that Manship is also the sculptor behind the famous statue of Prometheus in the plaza at New York’s Rockefeller Center. Urban knows that details like that give visitors greater insight into the treasures of Stan Hywet.

As senior Manor House interpreter, Urban says the more he learns about the art, architecture and family whose home is now an Akron landmark, the more he wants to know.

His vast knowledge and engaging style are well suited to the volunteer job that he “turned into a full time profession” after he retired 10 years ago. “Volunteering at Stan Hywet is almost addictive. You just can’t give it up,” Urban says.

The recipient of this year’s Volunteer Award, Urban has served on multiple Stan Hywet boards including the Strategic Planning Committee. He has more than 3,500 documented hours of service.

Outstanding Artist in Dance

“I

’ve always been a mover,” Amy Miller says. “I guess you could say dance chose me.”

Contemporary choreography is “a real cross-pollination of ideas,” she says.

Giving the dancers tasks that play to their strengths while stretching them in new areas, letting them take the movements to different places, reordering sequences and trying variations again and again is like solving the ultimate puzzle. “You never know what you’re gonna get,” she says. “I like that feeling.”

Donald Rosenberg, Plain Dealer dance critic, describes Miller’s work in “For the Life of Me” as “witty,” “playful” and “exulting in youthful energy.”

George Pope

G

eorge Pope remembers falling in love with the flute and the harp after watching Leonard Bernstein Young People’s Concerts on television. He chose to play the flute because he couldn’t play harp in the marching band.

Equally comfortable teaching and performing, Pope is professor of flute at The University of Akron, a cofounder of the Chamber Music Society of Ohio and a founding member of the Solaris Wind Quintet. His playing has been described by Fanfare magazine as “clean, arrestingly vigorous and beautiful.”

His master classes around the world and Summer Flute Experience at UA are extremely popular. Encouraging and motivational, Pope frequently hears from former students eager to share their successes with their mentor and friend.

“To me, music is magic because each musician must take their ideas, turn them into sound and send them through the air to someone else’s ears and mind and heart,” Pope says. “The last thing I tell my student before the go onstage to play a recital is: Make me cry... for all the right reasons!”

John Brown His controversial acts helped ignite the Civil War.

O

ne hundred and fifty years after John Brown’s death, his multilayered life remains as thought-provoking and gut-wrenching as ever.

Born in Connecticut, Brown and his family moved to the Western Reserve when he was just 5. They lived in Hudson where his father established a tannery.

As a young man, Brown returned to Connecticut with the plan of studying to become a Congregationalist minister, but poor health and lack of funds brought him back to Hudson to work for his father.

By 1836, he moved his family to Franklin Mills (now Kent) where he set up a tannery along with business partner Zenas Kent. Along with tanning hides and trading cattle, Brown began breeding horses and sheep.

Heavily leveraged, Brown went bankrupt in 1842.

He and his family lived in Akron off and on from 1844 and 1854. It was his expertise in raising sheep and producing Merino wool that led to a partnership with Simon Perkin’s Jr., son of Akron’s founder. Sadly, the success of Perkins & Brown was also short lived.

On Oct. 16, 1859, Brown led 19 men in an attack on the armory and arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Va., to seize muskets and rifles that would enable slaves to take their freedom by force. At the raid, Brown’s men killed four people and wounded nine. Ten of his raiders, including two of his own sons, were killed.

The man who couldn’t live with slavery was charged with treason, multiple firstdegree murders and inciting an insurrection. He was hanged for his crimes on Dec. 2, 1859.
